Cruise Holidays

New horizons - and waking up to them - fresh vistas every time you pull back those curtains, and relaxing on some of the most exciting ships ever to sail the seven seas. We know what makes a cruise, and know every ship from top to bottom, stem to stern. We know the best ports to call at, and the best ways to combine a cruise trip with the perfect destination whether it's one, two or three! With two-thirds of this big, beautiful world covered in ocean, luxury, adventure, and even water slides aren’t limited to just dry land anymore.

Cruise Types

Whether this is your first cruise trip or your 21st, there’s a lot of open water out there to explore, and a lot of choice when it comes to destinations, resorts and the cruises themselves. We wouldn’t want you to feel overwhelmed when it comes to planning your time sailing the ocean blue, so we’re here to break down our cruise types for you.

cruise and stay

Cruise and stay

Cruise & Stay holidays merge everything that rocks about cruise holidays with a fun-filled stay in an extraordinary place. Whether you want a blissful beach break or to stick around to explore a city, you can easily pair it with an epic cruise experience to keep your journey constantly fresh and vibrant. Party, relax and treat yourself onboard before getting up close and personal with a fantastic destination, all in one holiday.

Fly cruise

Fly and cruise

Booking a fly and cruise option gets you to your holiday destination quicker than setting sail from a UK port, so you can reach those gorgeous Caribbean islands in a shorter space of time. Or maybe combine a cheeky stay on land (Florida, perhaps?) before hopping on board one of our favourite cruise lines. There's so many options we can help with to make your cruise holiday perfectly tailored to you.

Since we're part of the Virgin family, it's a no brainer we'll fly you with Virgin Atlantic to start your cruise.

Cruise UK

Cruise from the UK

Don’t feel like flying? Want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the airport? We’ve got you covered with plenty of departures from ports in the UK, and you’ll still have the world at your fingertips. Sail around Europe for a taster (perfect for those who are new to cruising), or take the scenic route over the ocean as far as the Caribbean for cruise holidays that start as soon as you’re onboard.

Scotland, Ireland & UK Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a British Isles cruise with Princess.

  • Orkney Islands
  • Paris & Normandy (Le Havre)
  • Portland for Stonehenge

Teeming with rural villages and vast countryside, Belfast is an explorer’s playground. Cruise to the British Isles and walk through the basalt formations of Giant’s Causeway. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens and observe the park’s Victorian heritage. Or experience true country living in the cottage of a breadmaker, where you can make fresh-baked goods to accompany your afternoon cup of tea.

In a land where fable and fact blend to become folklore, Cork is a beacon of romance among Ireland’s iconic cities. On a British Isles cruise, see the city’s emerald terrains reflected in the lakes of Killarney National Park. Savor an Irish coffee in the 18th-century village of Blarney. Or enjoy a lunch on the hills of Cashel, with the Romanesque architecture of St. Patrick’s Rock as your backdrop.

Experience the best of Irish hospitality on a British Isles cruise to Dublin. Stop by a pub and hear stories of the city from the people who call it home. Tour Trinity College, one of the world’s most famous universities. Or discover the secrets to brewing a stout at the Guinness Storehouse, and sip on a complimentary glass just a few hundred yards from where it’s made.

With centuries of cultural change, Edinburgh is home to a diverse landscape of design. Cruise the British Isles and follow the Royal Mile to the top of Castle Rock, where Edinburgh Castle sits overlooking the city below. Marvel at the expansive collection of artwork in the Royal Yacht Britannia, or shop for souvenirs on Princes Street while admiring the Georgian architecture of New Town.

Once an industrial giant, Glasgow is brimming with treasure. When you cruise the British Isles, wander the halls of Inveraray Castle to see a collection of royal portraits. Watch a kaleidoscopic display in Glasgow Cathedral as the sun pours through the stained-glass windows. Or spend the day admiring armor, weaponry and global gems in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Orkney is home to some of the oldest Neolithic sites in Europe. On a British Isles cruise, history buffs can hear World War II stories at the Italian Chapel. Or travel along Scapa Flow for an even deeper look into the region’s history of naval travel and trade. For those seeking mysteries, uncover secrets of the Ring of Brodgar, part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In a land that inspires love stories, reconnect with loved ones on a British Isles cruise to France. Dock in Le Havre and enjoy a breakfast crepe at a sidewalk cafe. Or embark on a day-long adventure in one of two directions. Visit Paris, where famous artwork awaits, or head to Normandy and see the D-Day beaches or the tidal island of Mont Saint Michel. From the painted portraits to the real-life scenery, revel in it all with Princess.

Used to build Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the stone extracted from Portland’s quarries has changed history. But there’s more to the city than it’s commodities. Cruise the British Isles to investigate the mysteries of Stonehenge, and learn about the grape-to-glass process at Langham Wine Estate. Or see hundreds of baby swans parading through the grounds of the 600-year-old Abbotsbury Swannery.

Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

The British Isles are a mecca of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruise from Southampton to Liverpool, and walk along the Royal Albert Dock, the first structure in Britain to be constructed without wood. Shop along Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Or travel to Brú na Bóinne in Dublin and get up close to Europe’s largest collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. On a British Isles cruise, snap photos of Dublin’s iconic sites — like St. Stephen’s Green and Christ Church Cathedral — and taste a world-famous stout at the Guinness Storehouse. Or ride through quaint villages in Belfast on your way to Giant’s Causeway, and revel in the natural structures that surround you.

Local connections

When you cruise the British Isles, meet the diverse personalities that call these lands home. In Dublin, head to a countryside bed and breakfast where a local chef invites you to savor homemade scones and jam. Or set out on a day-long tour in Cork with your loved ones and visit the city’s most iconic sites. Stop by the 18th-century village of Kinsale, and then continue to Blarney Castle, where legends and landmarks await.

More ashore

Enjoy even more history and culture during your British Isles cruise with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Visit several pubs during an evening tour, and hear stories from locals over a pint of local brew. Savor a traditional Scottish dinner in Edinburgh, and see the Royal Mile illuminated by street lamps and the evening light. Or explore Dublin by night, and indulge in Irish entertainment.

British Isles Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Accomodations

Your home away from home

Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. Celebrations galore

With our "Festivals of the World," immerse yourself in the traditions of the region even on board your British Isles cruise. At the Celtic Festival, compete in cultural trivia and learn to penny whistle. During Oktoberfest, adults can sample a collection of brews while kids can try their hand at pretzel making. Or relax during regional music performances and lectures from experts about the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Comforting and classic

From fresh-baked biscuits to hearty pies, the British Isles are notorious for cooking up comforting favorites. On an British Isles cruise with Princess, indulge in a British Pub lunch with delicacies like Bangers & Mash and Shepherd’s Pie. Or enjoy a Sunday Roast at Crown Grill™ with roasted meat, potatoes and vegetables. Savor the comforts of home with specialty dining aboard every Princess ship.

Entertainment

Find your joy

Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of  Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.

Reset, recharge, relax

Your European cruise should be every bit as refreshing as it is inspiring. Unwind in the Sanctuary, a retreat just for adults, and relish in tranquility. Or book an appointment at the Lotus Spa®, named "Best Spa on a Cruise Ship" by Spafinder Wellness 365™. Enjoy relaxing treatments — like facials, hot stone massages and detoxifying wraps — that will leave you recharged for upcoming adventures.

Vegas hits the seas

Experience the thrill of cards, dice, roulette and blackjack at the casino onboard our European cruises. Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.

Ships sailing British Isles cruises

Our Princess fleet includes ships that range from small to large vessels. From a balcony stateroom, marvel at breathtaking shorelines passing by before enjoying international cuisine in one of our many eateries during your British Isles cruise.

About Cruises from the UK

With a greater choice of cruise lines, destinations and ships sailing from UK ports every year and some fantastic added value benefits, it's no wonder that more of us are choosing to cruise directly from the UK than ever before.

A cruise is the perfect holiday choice for those looking to avoid long flights and the hustle and bustle of airport travel, with departures available from a wide range of British ports including Southampton , Newcastle , Liverpool , Greenock and more. Free car parking and/or free coach travel is available on selected cruises from the UK - ask our Cruise Advisors for full details.

You can sail from UK ports to a variety of top destinations like the sunny Mediterranean , the Canary Islands , the beautiful Norwegian Fjords and the historic capitals of Scandinavia and the Baltic. For people who have the travel bug, there are longer sailings including transatlantic crossings and luxurious full world cruises.

Most cruises departing from British ports also come with additional benefits like regional coach transfers, car parking or incredible last-minute savings that are not to be missed. Call our cruise consultants today for more details on cruises sailing directly from the UK

Cruises from Southampton

Southamptom, england port information.

A cruise out of Southampton unlocks all kinds of incredible destinations, from French and Spanish wine country to Norway’s majestic fjords. But this charming port is also a great destination in and of itself. Spend some time getting to know it before your holiday – you won’t be disappointed. If you have a soft spot for mediaeval history, you’ll find plenty of interesting sites here. Like Bargate, a gatehouse that dates back over a thousand years to Norman times. Or visit St Michael's church on Castle Way – built in the 11th century, it’s home to ancient Norman artefacts and relics. Then, fast forward a few centuries at the Tudor house in St Michael’s Square, which served as the home of a wealthy merchant family in the 15th century. Today it’s a museum that showcases exhibits featuring nearly a thousand years of local history.

7 reasons why you should go on a cruise for your next family holiday

Thinking about a cruise for your next family holiday? Here are seven reasons why Mumsnetters love cruising with kids.

By Rachel Erdos | Last updated Jun 3, 2024

MSC family cruise

Created for

MSC Cruises logo

If you like the idea of exploring different destinations in one trip but are put off by complicated logistics, and also love holidays that provide easy access to pools, kids’ clubs, restaurants and entertainment, a family cruise is a best-of-both-worlds solution.

Waking up to a different backdrop each morning is a novelty that doesn’t wear off and the excitement of visiting new cities, resorts and beaches keeps things interesting for the whole family. Having a cabin to return to means you don’t have to unpack and re-pack suitcases along the way, and the convenience of having travel plans mapped out takes the stress out of hectic transfers with kids in tow.

And if you book with MSC Cruises you’ll find onboard facilities that bring together all the things that kids love - pools, waterslides, fun activities, kid-friendly shows, as well as features that ensure parents can properly kick back and relax too (kids’ clubs, child-friendly menus, family excursions, 24-hour room service and spa treatments).

There are boatloads of threads about family cruising on the Mumsnet holidays forum . Here are just some of the reasons why Mumsnet users love setting sail with kids.

1. It’s a great way to see lots of destinations in one trip

We met a lot of families like us who were treating the cruise like a floating taxi between interesting places; equally lots of families just loving the cruise experience and taking part in all of the clubs and activities on board.” RomaineCalm
The biggest pleasure though is visiting different places and not having to keep packing and unpacking!” - ajandjjmum
We did an MSC Cruises [trip] last year and loved it. Really want to book again! We did the Canary Islands cruise and friends have done the Mediterranean and Norwegian fjords and all had a great time.” Brazillio

A cruise holiday is a convenient way to cover a lot of ground in one trip. And there’s no easier way of putting together a multi-destination itinerary than by booking a cabin onboard a ship that drifts into new ports every few days. Often you’ll disembark and be able to wander around the local area on foot, or with companies like MSC Cruises you can join tours that are specifically tailored to families. Family Fun excursions are run by local guides and prices are discounted for kids (children under two are free of charge and you can get up to 30% off tickets for kids aged 3 to 13).

It’s also a fantastic way to get to grips with a specific region like Greece where you can hop between islands like Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu and Mykonos, or tick off stunning Italian cities (Venice, Rome and Naples) in one go.

I’ve been with a few cruise lines including MSC. The ship was absolutely stunning and there was lots to do including water slides.

-Mumsnet user, CoolShoeshine

2. It’s excellent value for money

Cruises are amazing value for money, the service is great and so is the food.” - VickyEadieofThigh
Our MSC cruises have been excellent value. The ships are absolutely gorgeous, clean and sparkling. The cabin was the nicest and most comfortable we have ever had. We have booked another cruise with them as their prices are very competitive.” Greenteandchives

Paying upfront for a cruise holiday means that your cabin accommodation, flights (depending on the itinerary), food, soft drinks (tea, coffee, water) and entertainment are all taken care of and you’ll also get access to kids’ clubs and be able to use sports facilities onboard. All the basics are covered before you’ve even set foot on the ship and a package price can make managing the family finances a little easier. Food isn’t limited to three meals a day either - you’ll be able to take advantage of snack bars and ice cream throughout your trip and on family-friendly ships, there’s typically a children’s dining area and kid-friendly menus.

On MSC Cruises ships you’ll find kids’ menus that have been created in collaboration with the Osservatorio Chicco Baby Research Center .

MSC Virtuosa is perfect for families

"The virtuosa is a stunning ship with lots of fun extras such as the water slides, high ropes and bowling."

CoolShoeshine

Book a summer escape and sail direct from Southampton

3. There’s so much for kids to do

We took our 10 and 4 year old on a cruise last year and loved it… there was so much to do. They both loved the evening entertainment, there was ice skating, arcade games, quizzes, pools, hot tubs. It was great.” Newuser75
We’ve gone on several cruises with 2 teenagers, one loved the kids club, the other enjoyed doing quizzes, watching films and just chilling in cabin on sea days. It really covered everyone’s needs for a great holiday.” - Mindymomo

Despite the excitement of dropping anchor in a new port, you might find it hard to drag kids off the ship given the variety of fun things to do onboard. Family-friendly cruise ships feature kids’ clubs with tailored activities for different age groups and you’ll find a daily roster of sports, games, competitions, crafts and more.

On MSC Cruises ships there are five separate kids’ clubs that cater to kids from six months to 17 years. The baby club offers a creche service run by qualified staff and kid-friendly activities include sports tournaments, quizzes and Doremi family discos.

MSC has partnered with Lego so you’ll find Lego-themed activities and dedicated Lego play areas on all ships. And there’s even a Drone Academy obstacle course onboard MSC Grandiosa .

Other fun amenities include aquaparks, ziplines, MSC Formula Racer simulators, XD cinemas and video games rooms.

For parental peace of mind, it’s worth knowing that MSC ships feature modern medical centres with 24/7 specialist paediatric telemedicine support, and the baby laundry service collects clothes from cabins and delivers them clean and sterilised.

4. The food is fab (and plentiful)

The food is like a good 5* hotel and there’s a selection of restaurants.” Zipps
We love it! Been on several. The food is fab, it’s multiple courses at dinner. So you order a starter, a salad, a pasta or risotto, a main then a desert.” picklemepopcorn
I'm going on my third MSC cruise next month and I loved the two I've been on already. The food is lovely, plenty of variety” honeyrider

One of the many highlights of a cruise holiday is the variety of food on offer. From buffet breakfasts to alfresco lunches to speciality evening meals, you won’t go hungry onboard. And because there’s so much choice, you can keep every member of the family happy at mealtimes.

Families can take advantage of early dinner times - a great way to cater to hangry kids and to avoid the crowds.

On MSC Cruises ships there’s a kids’ corner at each buffet restaurant featuring fun and healthy dishes, and there’s also a dedicated children’s area for family dining . Speciality restaurants feature kids’ menus and you can arrange for the kids’ club staff to dine with your kids if you fancy an adult-only meal elsewhere. You can even get meals delivered straight to your cabin if you fancy a quiet meal in.

5. You can set sail straight from the UK

We’ve done 2 cruises out of Southampton. We did the parking at the port where you park, the porter takes your luggage from the boot straight to the cabin and you just check in and walk onto the ship with just your handbag. Honesty the easiest holiday we’ve ever had by a mile!" worldwandering

Skip lengthy airport queues and start your holiday from UK shores with a no-fly cruise. Being able to board a ship in the UK really does set you up for a hassle-free holiday as you don't have to worry about strict luggage restrictions or think about how to entertain the kids when navigating through a busy airport or contend with flight delays and cancellations.

Most cruise lines have a generous luggage allowance, particularly when boarding from the UK, making it easy for families to ensure that they don't have to sacrifice favourite toys or essential kids' gadgets in order to comply with airline restrictions.

MSC Cruises for example has a maximum limit of eight pieces of luggage (not exceeding 100kg) for all passengers in the same cabin, giving you plenty of freedom and flexibility.

MSC Virtuosa departs from Southampton and is a fabulous family-friendly ship. It features five pools and a fun waterpark as well as a sports complex, an arcade, kids' clubs, a luxury spa and a stunning indoor promenade lined with boutiques and restaurants. Itineraries that depart from Southampton include the Norwegian Fjords, the Iberian Coast and the Caribbean.

6. The evening entertainment is excellent

We saw a few shows and they were good - the two paid shows were amazing! The evening entertainment was fantastic 🤩” Brazillio
MSC is considerably cheaper, the new ships are absolutely stunning and the entertainment amazing. We hardly saw our teens during the 2 weeks, except for dinner and port days!” - CruiseOver

Swap screen time for stage time onboard a cruise where you can expect to see a dazzling array of live theatre, musicals and Broadway-style productions. And on family-friendly ships there are often early shows for kids allowing you to stick to some kind of routine.

Some paid-for shows take things up a notch in terms of quality and production and wouldn’t feel out of place in the West End. MSC’s Carousel Productions at Sea show brings together acrobatics, dance and live music for an immersive experience and is perfect for older kids and teens.

Away from the stage, you’ll find fun evening activities like bowling alleys, driving simulators, arcades and cinemas so there’s plenty to squeeze in before bedtime.

There are typically evening kids’ club sessions on offer too if you wanted to snatch a couple of hours of child-free wining and dining.

7. It’s a floating hotel!

We did two connecting rooms, overlooking promenade, so no balcony. It worked out fine. We had the connecting door open most of the time, but nice to have the option for privacy, the extra bathroom and the extra space.” - 80sgirly
A lot of families get a nice roomy balcony cabin with an inside cabin opposite to cut the cost. Once you are on board you may be able to mix & match who sleeps where.” Numbersaremything

Whether you’re in an inside cabin or a balcony suite, your kids will no doubt love the novelty of being lulled to sleep by the waves and waking up in a different destination every day.

And with a huge range of cabin configurations on offer, there are options for families of all sizes. When your kids are small, you can bundle into the same cabin (cots are available but need to be pre-booked) and when they (you) need extra space, there are interconnecting rooms available - great for teens looking for a bit of privacy and families needing extra bathroom space.

Mumsnetters are split on whether to opt for an inside or external cabin with many stating that because there are so many things to do onboard and when docked, the cabin is literally just for sleeping in and not worth the added cost. Others believe fresh air, natural light and ocean views are well worth paying extra for.

On MSC Cruises you can book interconnecting cabins that can sleep up to 10 people.

A cruise holiday isn’t always about setting sail across vast oceans. For an alternative type of break on the water, winding your way inland might sound similar but it’s a vastly different experience.

From crossing deep into the untouched areas of the Amazon rainforest to exploring some of Europe ’s finest cities, the river cruise experience is one that allows tourists to get to grips with the history, culture and tradition of a destination in a slow, immersive fashion.

This could be in the form of sampling Creole cuisine in Mississippi or discovering historic sites in Vietnam , but whatever it is, there’s plenty of choice across Europe , Asia , South America and North America .

Read on for a selection of the best cruises, from the Mississippi to the Mekong.

The Danube rises in the mountains of Germany’s Black Forest

Europe’s second longest river – and arguably its most famous – river takes you through amazing capital cities and host of charming towns, as well as plenty of scenic countryside in Austria , Hungary , Slovakia and Romania. Cruises along the Danube can vary from a handful of days to almost three weeks, giving you time to explore the elegance of cities like Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava or Belgrade.

Emerald Cruises lets you see the best of the Danube with the addition of a hefty dose of traditional German culture in Munich. Leaving the Bavarian capital, you’ll travel to Passau before a quick cross-border trip to the Unesco-listed Czech city of Cesky Krumlov. Vienna is the next city, replete with opulent architecture, before a quick overnight stay in Bratislava on the sixth night. Guided tours and hikes around the castle are included, before you get three nights to explore Budapest, the Hungarian capital that is blessed with picturesque buildings, relaxed thermal baths and a buzzing nightlife scene.

From £1,999pp, including nine nights’ accommodation, full board, tours of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and airport transfers. Departing 7 May 2024 to 20 October 2024.

The Amazon basin has an area of around 2.7 million square miles

This famous river runs for over 4,000 miles throughout South America and is a major part of the eponymous rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and important natural areas on the planet. A river cruise remains the best way to reach deeper into the jungle, with many cruises beginning in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus or in the Peruvian city of Lima.

Start in Peru’s enchanting capital with the Peruvian Rivers and Rainforest Discovery cruise from Uniworld. You’ll fly to Iquitos, the largest city in the Amazon as your next stop, before delving into some of the most remote areas in the world as you take to the waters. From here, nature takes centre stage, with a variety of experiences – including jungle walks and kayaking on a lake – added to the enjoyment of natural features such as giant lilies, towering barrigona trees and around 10 per cent of the world’s known animal species.

From £8,799pp, including 10 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London, domestic flights and various excursions. Departing regularly from 17 January until 6 November 2024.

The Nile starts in the Mediterranean and runs through as far south as Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya

Start in  Cairo  and make your way down to Aswan over a few days (though many shorter routes operate between  Aswan and Luxor  only). For a relaxing way to take in riverside scenery and some of Egypt’s most important historical sites, a river cruise is the ideal choice.

AP Touring’s  Egypt Discovery  trip takes you on a round trip from Cairo. You’ll cross thousands of years of history, starting with West Bank the Valley of the Kings, before a short flight to Aswan to explore Abu Simbel and a sighting of the landmark Pyramids of Giza near the Egyptian capital. The scenery along the route is exceptional, too, with palm trees, green spaces and mini oases dotted in between the yellow-hued rock.

From £6,995pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, 30 meals (including unlimited local beer and wine) return flights from London Heathrow, domestic flights within Egypt and activities in each of the 10 destinations. Departing regularly from September 2024 to April 2025.

The Rhine is the busiest waterway in Europe

Exploring this land of castles and fairytales is a worthwhile European trip, with tours often starting in the pretty Dutch capital of Amsterdam and weaving across the German and French countryside, with the route broken up by cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf and Strasbourg. Many of the towns located on the banks of the Rhine, such as Koblenz, are incredibly picturesque, with a range of medieval castles and natural sites like the Black Forest also featuring.

Ama Waterways provide a seven-night cruise that runs from Basel to Amsterdam. Get your cultural fix at either end of your trip in either of these two cities, before admiring the vistas around the Rhine Valley, the medieval castles that loom over towns like Heidelberg and the timber-framed buildings that line the streets of Riquewihr and Strasbourg. Stops in both Freiburg and Dusseldorf are also included, as well as an optional excursion to Cologne.

From £2,399pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and tours in each destination. Departing regularly between 18 February and 28 December 2024.

The Douro Valley is supposedly the oldest demarcated wine-growing region in the world

The views around the Douro Valley are some of the best in Portugal , whether you’re sitting by the banks in Porto or admiring the verdant hills and vineyards around Pinhao. This region, well-known for its port production, has cruises lasting roughly one week that usually begin and end in Porto – where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean – with a brief crossing over into Spain and Salamanca.

The Riviera Travel package offers an affordable eight-day Douro option starting and ending in Porto , with two nights to explore Portugal’s magnificent second city (and to go on a guided tour of a well-known port producer). Days three and four take you to sleepy Castelo de Rodrigo and the historic Spanish city of Salamanca (with guided tours and time to explore at your leisure) before traversing the cascading vineyards of the valley on your way back to Porto via the beautiful Peso de Regua (and a local wine tasting).

From £1,599pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board, flights from a London airport, one excursion one each day and airport transfers. Departing regularly from 7 April 2024.

The Mississippi

At least 260 species of fish – 25 per cent of all fish species in North America – live in the Mississippi River

Discovering the Deep South is often done by car, but with new routes recently from Viking Cruises, exploring Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota and Tennessee has never been more idyllic. The famed cities of New Orleans and Memphis can bookend your tour, with lesser-known locations such as Baton Rouge, Natchez and Darrow making up the other stops.

Opt for Viking’s ‘Heart of the Delta’ cruise to if you really want to immerse yourself in the Deep South. The cruise begins with a few days exploring the French influences and Creole cuisine of New Orleans , before moving on to Baton Rouge – a haven of Creole and Cajun culture – and then onto Natchez, the oldest city on the river. You’ll travel through other towns on the Mississippi – complete with walking tours or excursions to the Atchafalaya Swamp basin – before reaching Memphis, the atmospheric home of blues music.

From £6,545pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London and one excursion per destination. Departing weekly from March 7 until 13 June, with additional departures on 7 November and 13 November.

The Mekong River is also known as the “Mother of Water”

The Mekong flows through a host of Asia’s most fascinating countries, including Vietnam , Thailand , China and Cambodia. Most cruises only take in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia , though this mix of floating fishing villages, traditional markets and the two capitals of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh will be enough for most travellers. With Avalon Waterways , you’ll combine energetic, modern cities with some of the most vibrant culture in Asia and a history that is equal parts sobering and fascinating.

It starts in Siem Reap, site of the Angkor Wat temple, before moving on to the Cambodian capital, where you can learn about the dictatorship of Pol Pot and visit several must-see landmarks. After this, Vietnam beckons, with a visit to the dizzying Ho Chi Minh City to see its admirable architecture. Visits to markets, old Vietnam War tunnels, temples and cooking classes are dotted in between these city trips for good measure, with stops at characterful towns like Vinh Long, too.

From £4,229pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and activities on each day of the trip. Departing regularly from 15 January to 11 March and from 12 August to 2 December 2024.

Widow left ‘crying her eyes out’ after being stuck alone on cruise with ‘vomiting bug’ after husband’s death

Jill and Andrew Bond who are on the P&O Cruises Ventura ship allegedly hit by vomiting bug norovirus.

A widow was left in tears after being hit by a ‘vomiting bug’ on a P&O cruise she took alone for the first time since her husband’s death.

The woman in her 70s is one of hundreds of holidaymakers who allegedly became ill after a norovirus outbreak on P&O Cruises Ventura ship.

Being ill and alone on her first solo cruise is ‘soul-destroying,’ she told Metro.co.uk .

Jill Bond, 67, from Coventry, is also on the latest two-week cruise around Canary Islands with her husband Andrew Bond, 59.

She suffers from COPD so the ‘violent’ vomiting left her ‘quite worried’ as she threw up after using her inhaler.

Jill and Andrew Bond who are on the P&O Cruises Ventura ship allegedly hit by vomiting bug norovirus.

‘If I had the chance I would fly this morning, but I don’t want to give it to anyone else. I don’t want to spread it and sitting on a plane you can easily give it to other,’ she said.

Guests and crew have allegedly been affected for more than a month after a persistent bug that remains on the ship.

More than 150 guests isolated on board the latest cruise that left the UK on May 11, a source has alleged.

They told Metro.co.uk there have been 250 suspected cases of the vomiting bug in the last four days, with guests allegedly ‘throwing up in public spaces’ around the ship.

P&O Cruises said previously it implemented its ‘approved and enhanced’ sanitisation protocols after reports of ‘guests with gastrointestinal symptoms.’

The widow, who asked not to be named, said she isolated in her cabin alone for more than two days after getting ill with the bug on Wednesday, with staff bringing her food and water cans as she struggled with diarrhoea and vomiting.

Her cabin is still full of unsanitary rubbish and sheets unchanged as the cabin has not been cleaned for four days despite end her isolation on Friday, she claims.

More than 250 passengers 'vomitting from bug' after norovirus outbreak on cruise

She described the moment she was allowed to go out of her cabin: ‘I sat in a corner and cried my eyes out. I feel vulnerable sitting there. You should not feel like that when you’re on holiday.

‘It was my first P&O cruise and last, absolutely.’

The woman said it had been ‘difficult’ for her to make the trip ‘as it’s my first cruise, on my own, since losing my beloved husband in May 2022.’

The couple had been on four cruises and ‘used to fly all over as well.’

She paid around £3,000 for the cruise.

The 14-day voyage from Southampton around the Canary Islands has turned into a nightmare as ‘more and more people get sick,’ the source claimed.

But some guests ‘have left the ship to fly home,’ a source alleged.

More than 250 passengers 'vomitting from bug' after norovirus outbreak on cruise

Another woman, who is on the cruise with her 85-year-old mum who has underlying health conditions, said the pair are two ‘frightened’ to leave their cabin on the £4,400 trip in case they get ill.

She claimed ‘no one from P&O’ has been in touch and people are let go ‘off the ship to towns and cities spreading this virus.’

Andrew, a personal injury lawyer, said there was no ‘self-service anywhere’ and tables are being sprayed and wiped down after guests.

But he claimed he had seen people ‘refuse’ to use the hand sanitisation units and ‘still be allowed into food service areas so enforcement of the protection measures is poor to say the least.’

He continued: ‘Whatever steps they are taking on the Ventura are clearly not working and they really should have cancelled our cruise and should cancel all future cruises until they are absolutely certain that the norovirus has been eradicated.

‘If it has been on board for the past 4 or 6 weeks, it is clearly a problem with or on the ship and is nothing to do with the passengers because they change every 7 or 14 days but the norovirus is still there.’

While the mid-way of the cruise had been a ‘nightmare,’ Andrew and Jill were determined to make the ‘most of it’ as she was feeling better and slowly able to eat again.

Jill said the staff are ‘lovely’ and everyone is ‘helpful,’ but she could see the ‘look on their faces, they are not happy and cheerful like normally.’

‘They seem very strained,’ she added.

In letter sent on Thursday evening, captain James Brown offered £15 on-board credit to each guest to compensate for leaving the ship in Tenerife while it was cleaned.

The source at the ship said ‘this is a serious outbreak,’ saying the latest cruise was ‘the most we have had sick this time.’

‘We don’t know where it came from, it has been on board for a month maybe 5-6 weeks now and each cruise we think it has gone but more and more people get sick,’ they said.

Guests allegedly face a five-hour wait to call the ship’s medical centre because of ‘so many cases.’

They claimed that passengers have not received compensation.

All guests who contacted Metro said they planned to seek compensation.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said in a statement on Saturday: ‘We are so sorry that these guests have been affected. Obviously it not what we would want for anyone on board as one of our highest priorities is always the wellbeing of everyone.

‘It is though important to note the  UK Health Security Agency  (UKHSA) has reported a current increase in cases across the U.K. as a whole.

‘We have approved sanitisation protocols and adopt a phased and proven approach .

‘These wide range of approved protocols include constant and enhanced sanitation across the ship with specialist teams, isolating those affected, serving the buffet (instead of self service), closing the launderettes but offering complimentary washing and pressing and more.’

A two-week cruise on Ventura around the Canaries starts from around £1,129.

When the ship was launched, it was one of the largest cruise ships on the British market, with 1,550 cabins.

A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said in a statement: ‘Southampton Port Health Authority has been made aware of elevated figures of acute gastro enteritis (AGE) affecting passengers on board MV Ventura recently.

‘The Authority has been communicating with Carnival UK regarding this incident and we understand the ship continues to sail at a heightened level of response for AGE for the duration of the cruise.

‘We are working with UKHSA to offer assistance to the vessel on its return to Southampton.’
