Cemetery Tours

Your memories of new orleans' cities of the dead will linger long after your visit.

Marie Laveau Tomb - St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

New Orleans is a city surrounded by water and built below sea level. This is why our departed spend eternity entombed above ground. Here, graves are family affairs, with remains settling over time to make room for the next generation to move in to what we call the Cities of the Dead. Ornate and historic, funky and other worldly, New Orleans cemeteries are home to everyone from music hit makers to voodoo queens. Tour companies will show you who’s who and explain the history and traditions. Pay homage to fallen yellow fever victims at St. Louis No.1 on Basin Street, the city’s oldest boneyard or visit some of the newer, just as elaborate places.

Here is a list of companies that offer cemetery tours:

Of all the city's attractions , New Orleans' cemeteries are a one-stop shop for learning about family traditions, history, Voodoo, jazz music and burial practices for above-ground tombs. However, some cemeteries, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, require you to join a guided tour to visit. These tours differ from New Orleans' ghost tours , which tell spooky stories of NOLA's legendary spirits and visit haunted spots around the city.

To help you select which tour is right for you, U.S. News created this list of the best New Orleans cemetery tours, informed by both expert and traveler opinion. No matter which outing you choose, you're sure to have a ghoulishly good time.

Among the tombs you'll spot are those belonging to Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, numerous New Orleans city mayors, as well as Homer Plessy (plaintiff in the United States Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson). Reviewers appreciate that the cemetery is restricted to guided tours and praise the experienced and humorous guides for their vast knowledge of the cemetery and the city in general.

Tours depart daily every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended. Groups are limited to 20 guests per tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cemetery tours are popular in New Orleans because cemeteries here are unlike most cemeteries in the U.S. Many of the departed are buried above ground in tombs that range from simple to ornate. Plus, these sites are reportedly haunted, making cemeteries all the more popular with ghost hunters.

There are some cemeteries you can visit on your own. Others, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, can only be viewed on an official tour. It's a good idea to find out whether your cemetery requires a tour guide before your visit; call the cemetery or speak with your hotel's concierge.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the most famous cemetery in the city. In part, this is because of the numerous important figures buried here. It's also the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans; in fact, people are still laid to rest here each year.

Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, activist Homer Plessy, writer Anne Rice and Popeyes founder Al Copeland are just a few of the celebrities buried in the most famous cemeteries in New Orleans. There are other famous individuals (such as politician Huey Long and musician Fats Domino) who are buried in other sites around the city. Actor Nicolas Cage will also be buried here; he has already built a pyramid tomb for himself in St. Louis Cemetery No 1.

Praise From Our Guests

I had a wonderful time, the guide showed me some pretty cool things and was knowledgeable about the cemetery and some of the people in it! I wouldn't definitely do it again!!!

Very interesting walking tour of Bonaventure Cemetary. As a Savannah native Richard was exceptionally knowledgeable about the various family plots as well as the more famous burial sites throughout the cemetary.

We had a wonderful time on this tour! Our guide, Chris, was so knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. His genuine interest in sharing the history of Bonaventure gives you a real connection to the place. The cemetery covers something like 160 acres, and he did a fantastic job of highlighting some of the most interesting sites and unique aspects. 10/10 would recommend!

Had a great time, the tour guide was awesome it started to rain during our tour, he gave us his umbrella so we didn't get to wet. Would do this tour again. Highly recommend.

I had no idea that Bonaventure Cemetery was an "active" burial site. It was also very interesting to learn about the various family plots. I have read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" but there is so much more to learn when you visit the cemetery. Sun screen, bug spray, and a bottle of water will come in handy.

  • Chevron down How many cemeteries do we visit on a tour?

Some of our New Orleans cemetery tours focus on one graveyard, while others include a few over a two- to three-hour experience. Select a specific tour for more information.

  • Chevron down Can I visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 without a guide?

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is only accessible on a licensed, guided tour. Because of the graveyard’s notoriety, it has been subject to vandalism over the years and is no longer open to the public unless they visit on a tour. Other New Orleans cemeteries are open to visit without a tour guide.

  • Chevron down Are the graveyards in New Orleans haunted?

Many of New Orleans’ graveyards are considered haunted. Ghosts and spirit sightings have been recorded for hundreds of years, especially in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and St. Roch Cemetery. However, it’s important to remember that the city’s cemeteries should be treated with respect and cannot be visited at night.

Tour New Orleans’ Historic Graveyards

There is no shortage of fascinating stories and striking sights to uncover in the city’s cemeteries. Explore some of the best cemetery tours in New Orleans and see for yourself why these sites are so well-known around the country.

Home to over 40 cemeteries – and attractions like Voodoo shops and the Museum of Death – it’s safe to say that New Orleans has a bit of a fascination with death. Of course, that might just have something to do with the city’s 300-year history of natural disasters, gruesome murders, bloody battles over territory, and legends of ghosts and vampires.

But beyond the unseen curiosities around the city, New Orleans’ many cemeteries have been an intriguing destinations for tourists and locals alike, especially the above-ground tombs of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Many of NOLA’s cemeteries date back to the 1700s, identified by elaborate tombs, large mausoleums and ornate crypts and sculptures. Cemeteries like St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 are characterized by their crosses, decorative ironwork, white tombs, and hauntingly beautiful surroundings.

Cities of the Dead

The rows upon rows of above-ground tombs were once called “cities of the dead” by Mark Twain, and the name has stuck ever since. But why are the tombs above ground in the first place? The reason for these cities of the dead can be traced back to the 1700s, when early settlers struggled to bury their dead due to environmental conditions.

The New Orleans water table is very high (the city was built below sea level), making it impossible to keep coffins weighed down in shallow graves – dig any deeper and you’re guaranteed to hit water. Early NOLA residents often had to contend with floating caskets and exposed remains of loved ones. Based on the Spanish custom of using burial vaults, the city’s residents arrived at the solution of using above-ground graves. But as the city grew and space became harder to come by, graves were stacked on top of one another and families shared crypts.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Wondering who is buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1? It should come as no surprise that the city’s oldest cemetery is home to its most noteworthy residents like Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and chess champion Paul Morphy. Even Nicolas Cage – who is not yet deceased, we might add – has already secured his final resting place in the cemetery: a tomb shaped like a white pyramid that stands out from the other tombs in the graveyard. You can’t miss it!

Best Cemeteries to Visit in New Orleans

Other famous New Orleans graveyards are St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 3. They both opened in the 1800s after outbreaks of yellow fever and cholera caused a demand for burial space. You’ll see Greek Revival-style tombs, impressive ironwork and carved stone angels. Lafayette Cemetery 1 is well known for being the burial site of immigrants from over 25 different countries. These are some of the best cemeteries to visit in New Orleans.

Guided Cemetery Tours in New Orleans

On a New Orleans cemetery tour, you’ll learn all about NOLA’s respect for the dead, as well as the detailed history of these impressive graveyards. Tour guides will point out famous tombs and even share stories of hauntings and other paranormal experiences in the graveyards. Punk rocker Johnny Ramone’s life-size statue offers an air guitar photo-op, while the tombstone of Mel Blanc (who voiced none other than Bugs Bunny) delivers levity in the face of death with its cheeky inscription: “That’s all folks.” When your journey with Hollywood Forever Cemetery tour comes to an end, stick around for movies or music under the stars at the cemetery’s Masonic Lodge. Only in Hollywood.

Born a heterochromatic baby (put down the medical reference book - it means she's got two different colored eyes) with the last name "Bible" on Halloween night, Karie was destined to be nothing if not unique. Her passion for history and Hollywood's past led her to starting a cemetery tour in 2002 under the guidance of historian Marc Wanamaker. In keeping with her love of living history, she gives the tour in vintage gowns from her collection that spans the 1920s through the 1950s.

Karie has lectured at The Old Town Music Hall, The Queen Mary, The Homestead Museum and is also a "Lady in Black" to honor silent film star Rudolph Valentino.

She created the e-newsletter FilmRadar.com about specialty film going in Los Angeles.

Karie has appeared in segments for Turner Classic Movies, CNN, History Channel and Travel Channel. Last summer she was in the PBS series " World's Greatest Cemeteries " hosted by Roberto Mighty. She co-authored the book "Location Filming in Los Angeles" with historians Marc Wanamaker and Harry Medved and co-authored "Hollywood Celebrates the Holidays" with Mary Mallory.

Inside spine-chilling forgotten cemetery at the heart of abandoned ghost town

Buried deep inside a long forgotten mining town in Canada, an urban explorer took a tour of a creepy, abandoned cemetery with a rich history of war, poisoning and deadly disease.

Abandoned cemetery in Anyox, British Colombia, Canada

  • 08:42, 9 Jun 2024

An urban explorer revealed how he discovered a long-neglected cemetery in an creepy abandoned ghost town - and its enough to make anyone uneasy.

Known by his online username Freaktography, Dave, explores abandoned, derelict and uninhabited locations across the world and shares his findings with fans on his YouTube channel and website. His latest adventure to Anyox, in British Columbia, Canada , however, is particularly spine-chilling.

Anyox is a former copper mining town and was in operation for just a few decades, from 1914 to 1935. During its brief existence, spanning over just 20 years, the town witnessed 480 births, 320 deaths, and 160 marriages, according to What's The Jam.

Intrigued by what remained of the once thriving settlement, Dave embarked on a journey to visit the town, which he described as "one of the most surreal experiences" of his life. During his exploration, hidden deep inside a forest where bears can be seen wandering freely, he came across the town's abandoned cemetery.

A path to the graveyard has been cleared by rangers and the town’s two lone inhabitants, who also maintain the area. Most strikingly, the cemetery is filled with gravestones of once cherished loved ones, now covered in moss and overgrown foliage, deserted and left to decay under the forest's canopy.

Dave explained that many of these graves belong to veterans of the First World War and stand out from the others. He said: "Each veteran's gravesite is marked with a rectangular cement outline with four corner posts and a commemorative concrete-cast helmet. Some civilian graves are marked with tombstones, but many are simply mounds of earth with no marker to identify the dead."

The site also serves as the final resting place for young children, with one tragic story standing out. Wilfred Sheldon Teabo drowned after falling into the cyanide-contaminated Falls Creek while throwing rocks. His brother, desperate to save him, attempted to jump into the water after him but was held back by men who knew how toxic that water was.

When World War One broke out, the mining company who owned the town, Granby Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, promised jobs to all of the men leaving to fight in the war upon their return. They promised veterans they would be looked after and given dignified burials and special graves commemorating their service. Tragically, of the 400 who left to serve, less that 60 made it home again.

Now, those veterans' graves, along with the others in the deserted cemetery, are neglected and covered in overgrown greenery and surrounded by thriving nature. One particularly striking grave is that of Julia Omar. She died on December 7, 1925, and when her husband fled Anyox for Spain, her casket was exhumed and sent to his homeland, leaving a hollow grave with a still-standing tilted headstone.

Several deaths in the town were caused by toxic cyanide emissions, tragically affecting infants and causing stillbirths. The Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 also took its toll, brought in by passengers on incoming ships.

Dave’s eerie visit to Anyox ended abruptly with a chilling sign. He said: "Just as I considered staying longer, a widowmaker dropped from a tree behind me. A widowmaker is a large dead branch that falls from tall trees, potentially striking and killing anyone below. This was my sign to leave."

Biden pays respects to fallen U.S. soldiers with cemetery visit

Biden’s trip was full of emotional moments, and the president grew heavy-eyed after meeting with World War II veterans. A 21-gun salute cast eerie smoke over 9,388 white marble headstones at the Normandy American Cemetery.

BELLEAU, France — President Biden closed out his trip to France by paying his respects at an American military cemetery that Donald Trump notably skipped visiting when he was president, hoping his final stop Sunday will draw the stakes of the November election in stark relief.

Before returning to the United States, Biden honored America’s war dead at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery about an hour outside Paris. He placed a wreath at the cemetery chapel before an expanse of white headstones marking the final resting place of more than 2,200 U.S. soldiers who fought in World War I.

It was a solemn end to five days in which Trump was an unspoken yet unavoidable presence. On the surface, the trip marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day and celebrated the alliance between the United States and France. But during an election year when Trump has called into question fundamental understandings about America’s global role, Biden has embraced his Republican predecessor – and would-be successor – as a latent foil.

Biden calls France ‘our first friend’ and enduring ally as he’s honored by Macron with state visit

Every ode to the transatlantic partnership was a reminder that Trump could upend those relationships. Each reference to democracy stood a counterpoint to his rival’s efforts to overturn a presidential election. The myriad exhortations to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia created a contrast with Trump’s skepticism about providing U.S. assistance.

Biden’s paeans to the struggle between democracy and autocracy drew plaudits in Europe, where the prospect of a return to Trump’s turbulent reign has sparked no shortage of anxiety. But it remains to be seen how the message will resonate with American voters, as Biden’s campaign struggles to connect the dire warnings the Democratic president so often delivers about his rival with people’s daily concerns.

The visit to the cemetery served as a moment to underscore the contrast once more. Advertisement

“It’s the same story,” Biden said. “America showed up. America showed up to stop the Germans. America showed up to make sure that they did not prevail. And America shows up when we’re needed just like our allies show for us.”

During a 2018 trip to France, Trump skipped plans to go to the cemetery, a decision that the White House blamed on weather at the time. However, subsequent reports said that Trump told aides he didn’t want to go because he viewed the dead soldiers as “suckers” and “losers.” Trump has denied the comments, although they were later corroborated by his chief of staff at the time, John Kelly.

Trump’s purported insults have become a regular feature of Biden’s campaign speeches, including during an April rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

“These soldiers were heroes, just as every American who has served this nation,” Biden said. “Believing otherwise, that alone is disqualifying for someone to seek this office.”

Biden ignored a direct question about Trump at the cemetery. “The idea that I would come to Normandy and not make the short trip here to pay tribute,” he added, his voice trailing off as if to express disbelief.

Maura Sullivan, a former Marine officer who served on the American Battle Monuments Commission under President Barack Obama, said Biden’s visit would “set the example, and do what a president should do.” Now an official with the New Hampshire Democratic Party, Sullivan said that “voters can draw their own conclusions” from that. Advertisement

“This has been the most remarkable trip that I’ve ever made,” Biden said on Saturday night, his last in Paris before returning to the U.S.

At Aisne-Marne, Biden said the trip “surprised me how much it awakened my sense of why it’s so valuable to have these alliances. Why it’s so critical. That’s the way you stop wars, not start wars.”

His remarks over the last few days were also freighted with political overtones.

On Thursday at Normandy anniversary ceremonies, Biden said D-Day served a reminder that alliances make the United States stronger, calling it “a lesson that I pray we Americans never forget.” He also highlighted how the war effort drew on immigrants, women and people of color who were too often overlooked by history.

Then on Friday, he went to Pointe du Hoc, a spot on the coast where Army Rangers scaled cliffs to overcome Nazi defenses on D-Day that was also the site in 1984 of one of President Ronald Reagan’s most memorable speeches about the struggles between the West and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Advertisement

By following in an iconic Republican’s footsteps, Biden honed his appeal to traditional conservatives who are often frustrated by Trump’s isolationist vision. Biden issued a call for Americans to protect democracy like the Rangers who scaled the cliffs, a message that synced with campaign rhetoric that paints his election opponent as an existential threat to U.S. values.

While Biden was in France, his campaign announced that it had hired the onetime chief of staff to former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger to lead outreach to GOP voters. Kinzinger clashed with Trump’s foreign policy and efforts to overturn the last presidential election.

At Pointe du Hoc, Biden said the Army Rangers “fought to vanquish a hateful ideology in the ’30s and ’40s. Does anyone doubt they wouldn’t move heaven and earth to vanquish hateful ideologies of today?”

Trump has argued that the U.S. needs to devote more attention to its own problems and less to foreign alliances and entanglements. He has also routinely played down the importance of American partnerships, suggesting the U.S. could abandon its treaty commitments to defend European allies if they don’t pay enough for their own defenses.

Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian who wrote a book about Pointe du Hoc and Reagan’s speech, said Biden “had big shoes to step into” by choosing the same location.

Biden’s speech “didn’t equal Reagan’s in grandeur, nor could it,” Brinkley said. Still, he said Biden “said the right words about why democracy matters.” Advertisement

Paul Begala, a veteran Democratic strategist, said it could help Biden politically “to stand where Reagan stood.”

He noted that Biden is struggling with younger voters but appears to be gaining strength among older ones who may be more receptive to reminders of Reagan’s speech four decades ago.

“He needs a lot of Reagan Republicans to offset his challenges with younger voters,” he said.

Biden’s trip was also punctuated by the pomp of a state visit in Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron arranged a ceremony at the Arc du Triomphe, where four fighter jets flew overhead, and hosted a banquet at the Elysee presidential palace.

“United we stand, divided we fall,” Macron said in toasting Biden. “Allied we are, and allied we will stay.” Advertisement

Overall, Biden’s visit had a slower pace than other foreign trips. The 81-year-old president had no public events on his first day in Paris after arriving on an overnight flight, and didn’t hold a press conference with reporters, as is customary. John Kirby, a national security spokesman, said that was necessary to prepare “in advance of the weighty engagements” during subsequent days.

“There’s a lot on the calendar,” he said.

Still, it was a contrast to Macron’s tendency to offer prestigious guests an intense schedule with a mix of official meetings, business talks, cultural events and private dinners at fancy restaurants.

When the 46-year-old French leader hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping last month, the two-day agenda was crammed with activities including a trip to the Pyrenees Mountains near the border with Spain where Macron spent time as a child.

Associated Press writer Sylvie Corbet contributed to this report.
