A view of the Grand Canyon Skywalk located on the Hualapai Reservation at Grand Canyon West

Experience the Grand Canyon Skywalk

The mile deep Grand Canyon is breathtaking in of itself. But when you add to this grandeur a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge, suspended over the Colorado River below, that extends its 10-foot-wide path an incredible 70 feet out over the rim you have one of the most thrilling experiences in the world!

The Grand Canyon Skywalk opened in March 2007 and was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's highest observation deck at 4,000 feet above sea level.

Luckily, the most popular tourist attraction in all of the Grand Canyon is easily accessible to those traveling from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon Skywalk .

Stepping across the transparent glass floor of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, seeing the ground drop from beneath your feet as the Colorado River below comes into view, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for adventurers and sightseers alike.

About the Skywalk at Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon Skywalk construction took more than four years to complete and cost approximately $30 million. Commissioned and owned by the Hualapai Indian Tribe, the Grand Canyon Skywalk was opened in March of 2007, and surpassed one million visitors by 2015. The Skywalk is a true engineering marvel. Its reinforced construction contains 1.2 million pounds of steel and glass drilled nearly 50 feet deep into the Grand Canyon rim bedrock. This makes the Skywalk strong enough to hold seventy fully loaded 747 passenger jets! The floor of this spectacular bridge was constructed from four layers of low-iron glass, offering a perfectly-transparent view of the canyon floor and the Colorado River 4,000 feet beneath you. The U-shaped bridge extends 70 feet beyond the canyon's edge, which allows visitors to soak in a breathtaking 180-degree view of the canyon expanse. While the Grand Canyon National Park may be the more "famous" destination, this gravity-defying bridge can only be experienced at the Grand Canyon West Rim, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Reservation.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is open seven days a week from 9:00am - 5:00 pm, with extended hours in the summer months. Admission fees vary depending on whether you purchase tickets in advance or on the day of your visit. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a popular attraction and can be quite busy, especially during peak hours. It is recommended that you arrive early to avoid the crowds.

Visitors should also note that there are restrictions on the type of items that can be taken onto the Grand Canyon Skywalk. No personal items, including bags, cellphones, cameras, food, or beverages, are allowed. Lockers are provided for personal items before stepping out onto the Skywalk glass. In addition, visitors are required to wear special shoe covers before entering the Skywalk, in order to protect the glass from damage and keep it safe for future visitors.

The Hualapai

The Hualapai people have inhabited the Grand Canyon West and Peach Springs, AZ area for centuries. The Hualapai tribe, a sovereign Indian nation federally recognized since 1883, holds the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River sacred. Tribal members share their culture, tribal heritage, and traditions at the Grand Canyon West self-guided Native American village tour located at Eagle Point. This location also contains a fantastic gift shop. When visiting the Skywalk, it is important to remember that you are wandering ancient lands, and must respect the peaceful nature belonging to these friendly people.

Getting to the Grand Canyon West Rim Skywalk

The Skywalk Bridge is approximately an hour and a half drive from Kingman, Arizona via the US-93 N. Follow the US-93 N and Pierce Ferry Road for 58.8 miles to Diamond Bar Rd. After 23.6 miles on Diamond Bar Rd, turn left on Eagle Point Service Road and continue straight until you reach the Skywalk.

The distance from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon West is just short of two and a half hours. Take the 515 S to the US-93 S to the US-95 S. From there, take the I-11 S and US-93 S for 76.6 miles to Pierce Ferry Road in Mohave County. Follow Pierce Ferry Rd and Diamond Bar Road for 52.4 miles to the Eagle Point Service Road, where you will dead-end at the Skywalk Bridge.

Of course, you can skip the driving altogether and reach the West Rim in less than half the time if you travel from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon by helicopter or airplane! With Papillon's West Rim of the Grand Canyon Tours you can find packages that include all the exciting sightseeing opportunities Grand Canyon West Rim offers. With Papillon's Grand Canyon Skywalk Experience , your flight from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon West includes entry to the Skywalk Bridge and plenty of time to wander and explore.

Visitors are not allowed to drive private vehicles into Grand Canyon West. Instead, guests landing at Grand Canyon West airport, or those self-driving themselves to West Rim, board a complimentary, hop-on, hop-off, air-conditioned shuttle to explore points along the rim of Grand Canyon West. On the shuttle route, you can visit the Grand Canyon Skywalk, Indian Village at Eagle Point, and take in the scenic beauty of Eagle Point and Guano Point, both of which are some of the most dramatic viewpoints in the entire Grand Canyon.

Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West

Two vacation destinations just two hours apart.

By Andrea Morris

We’d oohed and aahed on the High Roller Ferris wheel. We’d squealed on The Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York. We’d admired the perfectly timed water show outside Bellagio. And we were ready to leave Las Vegas—at least, temporarily.

After two days of family fun—and lots of lazing in our hotel’s lazy river—my husband, daughters and I left the Strip for one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The drive from the bright lights of Sin City to the awe-inspiring sites of the Grand Canyon’s West Rim is only a little over two hours long. And when it comes to a family vacation in Las Vegas, who can resist doubling the fun?

Grand Canyon West image

SKYLINE TO SKYWALK

With the Stratosphere and Eiffel Towers in our rental car’s rear-view mirror, we hit the road toward the West Rim. The girls—Chloe, 10, and Olivia, 14—were on spring break, and I was confident in saying that we’d made the most of it so far. I’m not sure if the number of uploads your daughter has posted to her Instagram story is a measure of success, but I’d take the multiple photos and videos Olivia had been sharing daily as a positive. I’d purchased The Grand Tour tickets, which included a walk above the Grand Canyon on the u-shaped Skywalk, a ride in a helicopter to the Grand Canyon’s floor, and a journey by pontoon on the Colorado River. What a difference from what we’d done in Las Vegas—it felt like we were getting two vacations in one.

VIEWS ON A GLASS HORSESHOE

The Skywalk to Grand Canyon West

As it turned out, Grand Canyon West and Las Vegas have more in common than we’d thought. As I shuffled out onto the Skywalk, holding hands with Olivia (more for my comfort than hers), I heard Chloe talking to her dad. “I’m not nervous. It’s like the High Roller, but higher,” she said. Chloe could say that again.

The Skywalk is a 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped bridge that extends 70 feet out over the rim, 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon. Did I mention its floor is made of glass?

At the top of the Ferris wheel a few days ago, we could see some of Las Vegas’ most famous landmarks. Here, we gazed out on the nation’s—arguably, the world’s—most famous landmark. We had swapped the multicolored signage and flash of the Strip for the naturally beautiful colors of the canyon, in muted orange and red.

“I’M NOT NERVOUS. IT’S LIKE THE HIGH ROLLER, BUT HIGHER.”

UP, DOWN & AWAY

I found myself repeating Chloe’s statement as we ascended in a helicopter, part two of our Grand Tour. “It’s just like the Skywalk, but higher.” From the air, the four of us were able to see an even more vast view of the Grand Canyon’s West Rim, admiring its “skyline” —this one made of rock, in comparison to Las Vegas’ iconic buildings.

As quickly as the ride had begun, we had landed at the base of the Grand Canyon. Beside us, a pontoon boat, led by Hualapai River Runners, bobbed on the Colorado River’s tumbling waters. This was nothing like the lazy river we’d spent so much time in the past few days.

We hopped in the pontoon and began listening to our captain, who narrated the history of the Hualapai people and the Grand Canyon as we drifted on the Colorado’s calm flow. According to him, the Hualapai tribe believes that the river is sacred, and that its people were created from the clay of the river. Without it, the tribe cannot survive.

I looked around at my family, all rapt with attention—the Colorado River we were on suddenly more powerful and significant than when we first boarded the raft.

Helicopter Tours

PAUSE FOR THE PAST

The base of the Colorado River

Twenty-one miles upriver, the raft captain told the story of Separation Canyon and the Powell Expedition. We gazed around the alcove, imagining the events that took place here in 1869, when Major John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War veteran, led a group of men on a discovery of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon.

Two days before the expedition would conclude, three men decided to leave, deciding they’d had enough. They were never heard from again. A bronze plaque is left in memory of these explorers, who were so crucial to furthering the understanding of the Grand Canyon.

We ascended back to the rim of the Grand Canyon, losing sight of the Colorado River below, continuing to carve away at the canyon’s depths.

VIVA LAS VEGAS

On the drive back to Las Vegas, stars began to twinkle above us as twilight turned to night. Soon, the stars were replaced by the glow of downtown Las Vegas. I checked my Instagram as we made our way to our hotel.

I’m still not sure if the number of uploads your daughter has posted to her Instagram story is a measure of success, but the silence from Olivia’s profile made me think that her day had been too fulfilling to share.

We’d oohed and aahed on the Skywalk. We’d squealed on the helicopter ride up and into the Grand Canyon. We’d admired the water of the Colorado River. And we were ready to return to Las Vegas for a show.

Over the next few hours, a magician bamboozled us with his tricks. I chuckled after the show, thinking it was just one more way Las Vegas and Grand Canyon West were similar, knowing that a different kind of magic was just a few hours’ drive away.

Ward was our driver for the day and was amazing! There ended up being only us and one other couple so it was a nice small group. Right away we knew it was going to be a great day with our stop to the Las Vegas sign. Ward had so much information to share! We went to Hemenway Park where we saw big horn sheep, went to Hoover Dam, then on to the west rim at the the Grand Canyon. Plenty of water was available. Great day! Would highly recommend this tour and Ward!!

Prompt pickup in a 14 passenger Mercedes Benz van. West rim is shorter of the tours which was great if you still wanted to do something in the evening in Las Vegas. Ward was our driver he gave us a lot of information about our stops which included Las Vegas sign, Hoover Dam and Skywalk were spectacular, you have to see it in person, one day tours had us back in Las Vegas by 4:30. Small tour group is way to go. One day tours has my vote!!!

Amazing Experience, so worth it. I took this tour because of how highly rated it was on TripAdvisor, and I learned it was for a reason! The drive there provided information about the area as well as time to sleep, the breaks were well timed and then once we got to the Canyon- WOW. Every detail was provided for us: maps, recommendations on where to go, hiking poles, water, ponchos- not a single stone left upturned. It was a long bus ride, but i am glad I took this tour over going to the sky walk or any other tour. Highly, highly recommend.

Prompt pickup in a 14 passenger Mercedes Benz van. West rim is shorter of the tours which was great if you still wanted to do something in the evening in Las Vegas. Ward was our driver he gave us a lot of information about our stops Our trip to the Grand Canyon went great despite some challenges…thanks to Harry. He sent me an e-mail several days before our tour to let me know of some possible weather issues. He offered us several options to make sure we got a great trip. Ultimately, we decided to keep our original plans and take our chances with the weather. The shuttle was a comfortable, spacious, Mercedes bus. Harry packed some waters for us and there were outlets to charge our phones and tablets. Harry was a safe driver on top of being a fountain of knowledge. He gave us trivia about Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon as well as plenty of tips and recommendations. He also made sure to point out interesting things we could see from the road such as the Hoover Dam and some wildlife. Upon arrival to the Grand Canyon, we already had a plan of attack for seeing as much as possible based on Harry’s suggestions. We got out of the van and it was a frigid 32 degrees. No worries. Harry brought extra coats for us! We had a great time and a smooth trip. I recommend this company to anyone who want an awesome trip at a reasonable price with no hassle.

Grand Canyon - It is just a spectacular!!!..

Grand Canyon West Rim Tours

Tours to Grand Canyon West are the best way to visit this section of the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe as opposed to the National Park Service. We recommend booking a West Rim tour for three reasons: 1) It makes getting to this remote location easier and often faster, particularly if you take a helicopter or air tour; 2) Because all visitors are required to purchase an entrance package to this privately-owned attraction, booking a tour simplifies that process and has the added benefit of giving you VIP access to skip the line for the Grand Canyon Skywalk; and 3) This is the only place in the Grand Canyon at which you can land a helicopter at the bottom of the Canyon alongside the Colorado River, and it's also the only place you can go on a one-day whitewater river rafting trip.

Look for Grand Canyon West tours that offer free hotel pickups and let you build your own experience. The simplest tour, which may fly or drive you to the West Rim, will include a basic entrance package fee. From there, you can add on experiences such as a walk on the Grand Canyon Skywalk, horseback riding to and along the Rim, a pontoon boat ride on the Colorado River, and a champagne picnic on the Canyon floor. You can take a 4–6-hour half-day for a West Rim tour, or upgrade your activities and make it a full 11–13-hour day.

If you Google a Map of the Driving directions on how to drive to Grand Canyon Skywalk from Las Vegas. Google is estimating a 2 hour and 20 minute drive. It is approximately 125 Miles or 201 Kilometers to the Skywalk.

You simply take Highway 95 out of Vegas, which becomes Highway 93 just before Boulder City, Nevada, this Highway then takes you through Boulder City and over the Colorado River Bridge to Arizona.

Hoover Dam

Just a few miles or kilometers before the Bridge, you can drive down to a Parking Lot with access to the pedestrian walkway on the Bridge…for views of Hoover Dam. Allow an extra half hour or more for this stop. Unfortunately, you CANNOT see Hoover Dam while driving across the Colorado River Bridge in a passenger vehicle…the cement dividers are too high.

There are Gas Stations with Restrooms along the the way to the Skywalk.

Grand Canyon Skywalk Sign

Now, 73 miles or 117 Kilometers after leaving Vegas on this Highway, make sure you turn left onto the Pearce Ferry Road by the big Grand Canyon Skywalk sign. This will take you in a North Easterly direction towards the Skywalk through Dolan Springs. Next, be looking for the Diamond Bar Road sign in about 31 miles or 50 Kilometers, where you will turn right to the Skywalk.

You then take the Diamond Bar Road for about 21 miles or 34 Kilometers to the Grand Canyon West and Skywalk Tour Center.

Park in the designated parking area when you arrive and enter the Tour Center. You can Check-In and purchase your Tour Package here. You can also Purchase a Tour Package Online at GrandCanyonWest.com. You DO NOT need to make Reservations to visit Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk.  No private vehicles are allowed beyond the designated parking area and Tour Center.   ALL of the Tour Packages are operated by the Hualapai Tribe at Grand Canyon West.

There are two main packages that visitors purchase when visiting Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk. The Hualapai Legacy Package and the Legacy Gold Package. The Hualapai Legacy Package DOES NOT include the Skywalk Ticket, nor Lunch. Since most visitors want to take a walk on the Skywalk, you need to purchase the Legacy Gold Package that includes a Skywalk Ticket and Lunch. This is the most popular Tour Package. If you are looking for a more exclusive tour, then you might consider the Legacy VIP Tour.

Each Tour Package includes a stop at Eagle Point where the Grand Canyon Skywalk is located, Guano Point with spectacular views, and the Hualapai Ranch with Western hospitality and entertainment.

I would recommend you get an early start no matter what time of the year you plan on visiting the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Also, in the heat of summer, the earlier you get there, the more comfortable it is. Grand Canyon West is normally 5 to 10 degree’s cooler than Las Vegas…so, it can still be pretty warm out there in the summer. Remember hydration and drink lots of liquids. Sun care is always important in the Southwest, so remember to bring a hat and sunscreen.

Now, if you decide you DO NOT want to drive yourself out to the Skywalk, there are tour options by Motorcoach, Airplane, and Helicopter which will pick you up and drop you off at your Hotel in Las Vegas. You can leave all the navigation worries to someone else by taking a look at your Tour Options below or on GrandCanyon.com.

Come visit the Grand Canyon Skywalk and experience Grand Canyon West. It’s one of the newest attractions at Grand Canyon…and it’s close to Las Vegas.

Nestled in the Coconino National Forest, Flagstaff is also just a stone's throw away from holistic escapades in Sedona, historic attractions along Route 66, and plenty of outdoor activities.

Best Time To Go To The Grand Canyon Region

Arizona, southern Utah, and Nevada are infamous for their scorching hot summers, dry, desert-like climates, and their consequential fascinating landscapes. Due to varying landscapes, the climate across this region also varies greatly.

With very little precipitation and over 300 days of sun a year, the good news is that roadtrippers can visit the Grand Canyon region really any time of the year, although each season may cater to distinct interests and vacation types.

  • Best Time To Visit: Fall or Winter
  • Temperatures: Lows in the 30s or 40s, highs in the 50s or 60s

Not only are there endless fall activities to enjoy in the Grand Canyon , but the surrounding region also shines from October to December. Autumn in Arizona offers the best weather for hiking and other activities like corn mazes, wine tastings, and food festivals.

Book hotels, restaurant reservations, and flights well in advance if traveling to the Grand Canyon region in the fall, as it's the busiest and most expensive time of year.

While Arizona winters will be warmer for northerners, the Grand Canyon region still gets light snow and chilly nights from December to February. The frosty peaks make skiing a popular wintertime activity, along with hot air ballooning.

Accommodation prices are moderate in the winter and even at their lowest in certain regions of Arizona. However, rates can still go up during the weekends when skiers flock to the slopes.

Spring is another great season for outdoor activities in the Grand Canyon region, from hiking and biking to marveling at desert wildflower blooms. Temperatures can already graze the 80s from March to May, so travelers should pack lots of water and sunscreen to beat the midday heat.

Luckily, with all the rivers and reservoirs throughout Arizona, there's always a cove or beach nearby to cool off at.

June is often roadtrippers last chance to explore Route 66 before the summer heat sets in. Lots of areas in the Grand Canyon region soar above 100° in the summer, so a trip during July or August should be reserved for relaxation at spa resorts, moonlit night hikes, or museums and art galleries.

While certain cities like Phoenix get unbearably hot in the summer, others like Sedona or Flagstaff offer more reasonable warm temperatures.

Best Ways To Get Around The Grand Canyon Region

By far the best way to explore the area around the Grand Canyon is by driving, whether it's the car, truck, RV, or camper. There's just so much to see, from state parks and wildlife refuges to lakes and city life, and none of these sites are exactly close, so the best and most thorough itineraries include traveling by car.

Road tripping is particularly popular in the Grand Canyon region, especially considering some of the Southwest's most famous scenic drives are in the area, including Route 66 and Route 163.

On Foot Or By Bike

While vacationers may have to hop between sites by driving, there are a lot of opportunities to get out and stretch their legs in the Grand Canyon region. Visitors can walk around quaint downtowns, explore city life in Flagstaff, trek some of the most beautiful hikes in the United States , or go biking around Lake Powell or Mead.

Public Transportation

Apart from the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to Grand Canyon Village and free shuttle services within the Grand Canyon National Park, public transportation in the region is generally expensive, time-consuming, and scarce. Cities like Flagstaff, however, offer buses to traverse the downtown and surroundings.

  • One-way Tickets: from $1.25 per adult
  • Schedule: varies by line, check route timetables before visiting

Tips To Know When Visiting The Grand Canyon Region

America the beautiful pass.

Travelers looking for things to do on the way to the Grand Canyon should consider purchasing an annual America the Beautiful Pass . The pass includes day-use entrances to over 2,000 national parks and recreation sites, many of which are in Arizona, Utah, and Nevada.

The pass is valid for one year and is good for the pass owner plus all other passengers in the vehicle or for up to three other adults if the site charges per person.

  • Pass Prices: from $80 per year
  • Note: several free and discounted rates are available

Is The Grand Canyon Region Safe?

As far as safety goes exploring other attractions near the Grand Canyon, while vacationers should always be aware of their surroundings, the locals are generally friendly and helpful, in addition to being accustomed to tourists.

The biggest safety concern could be any vehicle issues, so roadtrippers should always check their tires and engines before and during their vacations. Never drive for too many hours uninterrupted, and watch out for wildlife crossing the highways, especially late at night.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In The Grand Canyon Region

Although the perfect day exploring things to do near the Grand Canyon may not exist, a long weekend or four days may be the best amount of time to soak up all there is to enjoy in the area.

The best itineraries on the way to the Grand Canyon include road-tripping along Historic Route 66 and making stops in Peach Springs for some outdoor adventures and later in Seligman or Williams to grab lunch at a classic American diner, take a selfie with quirky roadside attractions, and stroll the main streets.

From Williams, travelers can spend a day taking the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim or veer south to see some wildlife up close at Bearizona. Follow Route 66 to Flagstaff to wrap up the trip with a hopping arts and culture scene and nightlife.

Other vacationers looking for what else to do near the Grand Canyon may prefer to center their trips further north and check off some must-try bucket list experiences in the United States , including Coral Pink dunes, Lake Powell, and the stunning Monument Valley.
