New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

Remember that the ultimate decision to grant you a student visa does not solely lie with the visa officer but also with the immigration office, where your school is located. The German government is very particular when it comes to student visas.

The sudden arrival of the pandemic in 2020 changed the picture of the entire world and industries, including the education sector. Thus, German student visa rejection has become a dynamic topic. The success rate and rejection rate depend on many factors that keep changing from time to time.

What are the Requirements to Study in Germany?

Germany Student Visa Rejection Reasons

Avoiding a German student visa rejection involves understanding crucial do's and don'ts. Knowing what you should and shouldn't do is key to acing your student visa application. Here are 8 German student visa rejection reasons that all applicants must keep in mind:

Reasons for Germany Student Visa Rejection

1. Low Financial Conditions

The fact that public universities in Germany provide education with zero tuition fees might come as a shock. However, the German government, while being generous with education costs, emphasises ensuring that you possess adequate funds for accommodation and basic necessities.

Studying abroad, regardless of the destination, poses financial challenges. Therefore, it's crucial to prepare comprehensive documentation and evidence to assure the German government of your ability to study and sustain yourself in their country.

Here's a pro tip: Create a checklist and diligently mark each item. Double-checking ensures you don't overlook any essential aspect of the application process.

Should you require financial assistance for your education, Yocket Finance offers 100% free support on education loans. Hop on board now!

2. Language Requirements

The German Embassy requires you to at least master German to a C2 level and have the ability to speak English. If your study program is in German, make sure that you have learned the language to at least a B2 level and can speak it to a certain degree. To apply for an English-taught coursein Germany, you must achieve 6.5 on IELTS and 71 on TOEFL at the minimum . Make sure to take your language tests and always prepare according to the language of your course.

3. Poor Interview

The interview is a significant step in your visa approval. Even with a robust application, stumbling through interview questions can cast doubt on your sincerity and commitment, potentially leading to rejection. To enhance your chances, thorough preparation is key. Practice a wide range of possible questions, have well-thought-out responses, and exude confidence during the interview. Your ability to articulate your intentions convincingly significantly impacts the visa approval process. .

4. Low Academic Grades

Any country does not appreciate poor or low academic grades. Germany is no exception. Germany is one of the most competitive and challenging countries in terms of academics. Thus, one of the main things that their embassy would want to ensure is that you have the academic potential to deal with the various academic challenges. It is your chance to prove your competency in the interview and leave a good impression on the officer.

5. No Insurance

Sounds strange, right? But as strange as it may sound, it is true and highly important. The insurance you choose makes a whole lot of difference. The coverage amount of your insurance is what matters most. It should at least be €30,000 (INR 27,12,000) . If it is less than that, the chances of your visa being rejected are high.

6. Incorrect Visa Application

You must ensure that you apply for the correct student visa. There are three types of visas for applying to Germany: student visas, student application visas, and language course visas. All three types have different requirements; therefore, it is important to apply for the correct one, as you will have to gather various documents. You can avoid this mistake by knowing the purpose of each.

For example, apply for a language course visa if you wish to visit the country to learn the German language. Apply for a student visa if you want to get admission to German universities for a higher education course. Lastly, apply for a student application visa if you want to come to Germany and apply to the universities personally.

7. Inconsistent Choice of Study Programs

If a student is inconsistent with the selection of a particular course while applying to Germany, this can lead to the rejection of a visa application. For example, if you choose a course in MS in management and have a bachelor's degree in history, this might raise questions about your interest. Besides, don’t apply for double masters or bachelors, as the visa officer might conclude that you lack interest and are desperate to enter Germany at any cost.

You can avoid this scenario by selecting the field of interest in continuation to your bachelors, writing a letter of motivation in case you wish to change the field, and also having work experience or any other proof to back your statements.

8. Profile Deemed Unfit

Most countries provide scholarships, grants, and other financial aid to international students because they wish to attract candidates who have the will and intellect to offer something to the country.  Therefore, the decision on visa approval directly depends on the immigration committee. You can improve your chances of selection by selecting a course that has value in Germany or is available in their curriculum. Next, make your profile strong by backing your interest with solid proof.

Is the U.S. B1 or B2 visa easy to get?

To find out just how high your chances of approval are for getting a B1 or B2 visa, take RapidVisa’s Tourist Visa Approval Odds Calculator . The  Tourist Visa Approval Odds Calculator  uses a proprietary algorithm developed by RapidVisa, using data from our customers and from statistics put out by the National Visa Center (NVC). The calculator is a helpful tool in knowing what percent of US tourist visas get approved and what is the rejection rate of a B1 visa. These numbers are designed for educational purposes only and should not be relied upon for your results. Many other factors may play into your approval odds that are not taken into account by this calculator, including your visa interview.

Based on your criteria, you have of being approved for a B1/B2 Visa.

Your Score:

For your information, of B1/B2 applicants from are refused or denied.

What are the chances of getting a B1 or B2 visa?

There are many factors that can improve or hamper your odds of approval for a  U.S. tourist visa . The primary reason for the interview is to convince the consular officer that you have no intention of overstaying or immigrating permanently to the U.S.

Factors that may affect your odds of approval:

Employment status & verifiable income.

Being unemployed, or employed for a short period of time at a job may hurt your case. Having a long standing career in your home country, and working for the same company for more than five years may help your case.

Family Obligation & Family in the USA

If you are single without dependents, or have children that don't live with you, and you want to travel to the U.S., the officer may think you don't have enough reason to return to your country. However, having kids or dependent family members in your country is a great sign of strong ties. If you have family in the U.S., this could be a sign that you have a reason to stay in the U.S. and this may work against you. If you have a fiancé or a spouse in the U.S., your odds are lower, and you should probably opt for the  fiance visa  or  spousal visa .

Property & Asset Ownership

Owing assets and especially property or businesses in your home country are a great sign of strong ties.

If you've traveled to other countries before, especially first-world countries and did not overstay your visa and returned to your country, this is a sign that you are trusted to follow the visa process. If you have traveled to a first-world country with strict immigration policies and didn't  overstay your visa , this goes a long way to prove you are trustworthy.

Length of Trip

If you request to stay in the United States for a long period of time in your application, it may be a red flag that you intend to figure out a way to immigrate. If you request a more realistic time span, that is specific to the purpose of your trip, this is a point in your favor. For example, if you are traveling to a 5-day conference, requesting a trip for 3 months may look fishy. But if you only request 2 weeks, it makes more sense for that situation and is consistent with someone traveling for that purpose.

If you have no means to pay for the trip, and are relying on only a friend or family member to pay, this could count against you. However, if you have the means to pay yourself or if your company is paying for the trip, this signals that you won't become a burden to the state.

If you are heavily involved in your community, especially in a way that the organization would be deficient if you didn't return, this could help signal a strong tie. If you are a full-time college student enrolled in your country, this is good evidence you have an intention to return.

Of course, if you've been previously approved for a  B1/B2 visa  and entered the U.S., and returned to your country, this works in your favor. It proves you can be trusted  not to overstay. However, if you previously overstayed, your odds of approval are lower.

The more specific and precise your purpose of travel is, the better your case for a travel visa. . If you are attending a specific conference in your profession, or attending a wedding, or watching an event like a concert or solar eclipse, or anything else that is very specific and has a convincing reason to be in a specific place at a specific time, this builds a better case.

Denial Rates by Country

What is the rejection rate of a B1 or B2 visa based on your home country? The following table is straight from  NVC statistics  showing the actual numbers for 2022. The country doesn't necessarily play a role in your likelihood of approval or denial. What's more likely is that people in high denial countries tend to not be qualified. Use our approval odds calculator to determine if you may have a good shot at approval or not.
