Fluffernutters Purchase Announcement

Hey Fluffernutters, we have some exciting news to share with everyone. After 20 years in the sexy travel business Jon is retiring and riding off into the Jamaican sunset. 😊

Never fear all you fabulous and faithful Fluffs, we will Party On in Jon’s absence. As of today, Friday, March 3 rd , 2023 Fluffernutters will operate under Your Tribe Travel, LLC. This is a travel company owned and operated by Cherilyn & Jared Sperling. Cherilyn and Jared have been Fluffernutters since 2007 and Cherilyn has worked for Jon, in an official capacity, since 2014.  Let’s be real though, she worked with him from the very beginning, scheming and organizing sexy encounters. 😊 She knows the business inside and out and is ready to go to work planning your next fabulous vacation.

For all of you awaiting confirmations for recently requested reservations, please be patient. Some of this was purposely delayed so new business would be secured under the new owners. The plan is to be fully caught up by the end of next week. If you want to be sure your request for a reservation is on the list of new business to be confirmed, feel free to contact Cherilyn, directly. During the transition period the office phone number of 603-656-4498 will still ring to her. Eventually a new phone number may be used, but our valued clients will receive ample notice of those changes.

All current confirmations and payments on active reservations will remain intact with Your Tribe Travel, LLC and Fluffernutters. There is no need for anyone to be concerned since the database and all payment  records will remain with Fluffernutters and Your Tribe Travel, LLC. That being said, feel free to reach out to Cherilyn if you have any questions.

Although the sale of the company has already taken place, we want to send Jon off with a proper Thank You and farewell. It was Jon’s vision and devious desires that helped to put together such an amazing group of people. It is only fitting we give him one last opportunity to party with and thank each of you for the opportunity to serve you. His Farewell trip will be the Summer Takeover in July 2023. If you are not booked, book now so you can help with the farewell festivities and get a sneak peak at some of the new ways Your Tribe Travel is ready to serve you.

Let’s get this party started!!

Cherilyn & Jared

Why Southerners Love This New England Sandwich Staple

It may not have originated in the South, but there's something we can't deny about this sweet sandwich.

fluffernutters travel

Say the word "fluffernutter" and depending on where a person was raised, the name could make someone swwon with fond childhood memories, or leave them scratching their head at what you might be talking about.

The fluffernutter, also known as a peanut butter and marshmallow crème sandwich, has been a staple in New England lunchboxes and brown paper bags for decades, and it is still loved by kids of all ages.

The classic recipe for a fluffernutter consists of white sandwich bread, spreadable marshmallow crème, and creamy peanut butter. While it might sound like an unusual concoction to combine peanut butter with marshmallow crème between two slices of white bread, how many sandwiches do you know of that have a national holiday (October 8), its own jingle, and a distinct name that was officially added to Merriam-Webster's dictionary in 2021?

This simple sandwich has a rich history and a dedicated fanbase, and if you haven't heard of the sandwich yet, it is time to learn more and experience this sandwich for yourself.

History of the Fluffernutter

The origin of the sandwich dates to the early 20th century, after the creation of a spreadable marshmallow crème in Massachusetts. The earliest example of the sandwich was created by Emma Curtis in 1918 during World War I. She published the recipe on pamphlets and named the combination of peanut butter and marshmallow crème between two pieces of oat or barley bread a "Liberty Sandwich." This unique sandwich was created during a time when the government was encouraging citizens to consume less wheat and meat in the midst of the war.

Over the following decades, the fluffernutter maintained its popularity and appeal. The distinct name of fluffernutter came much later in the 1960s when an advertising agency created the term to help market the sandwich—they combined the word "fluffer" from Marshmallow Fluff, a specific brand of marshmallow crème, and "nutter," which is adapted from peanut butter.

This sandwich is still extremely popular today with New Englanders who wear the sandwich's origin with pride. The fluffernutter has also become synonymous with desserts featuring peanut butter and marshmallow as their main ingredients.

Popular spins of the flavor combinations have been adapted into cakes, cookies, milkshakes, and pies. The popularity of the combination of salty peanut butter and sweet marshmallow crème has extended across the country—and has found its way into the South.

Why Southerners Love This Sandwich

Southerners don't shy away from a unique blend of sandwich ingredients . Although the fluffernutter doesn't originate in the South, this tasty, quick-to-assemble sandwich joins the ranks of foods that instantly trigger nostalgia and fond food memories.

Additionally, Southern recipes have an appreciation for peanut butter and sweet combinations and have many iconic examples of combining a sweet taste with salty and savory flavors. This sandwich feeds the craving for a balance of salty and sweet and is also one of the most straightforward recipes to create.

If you haven't had the opportunity to try this sandwich for yourself, experience the joy from the recipe below and consider the variations to take your fluffernutter to the next level.

Fluffernutter Variations

After you have tried the classic sandwich, consider these exciting alternatives:

  • using chunky peanut butter instead of creamy peanut butter for extra texture
  • using a skillet or grill to heat the sandwich, making the peanut butter and marshmallow warm and gooey
  • toasting the bread before assembling
  • adding sliced bananas
  • adding a fruit jam or preserve
  • using almond, cashew, or sunflower butter instead of peanut butter
  • using Nutella or chocolate spread instead of peanut butter
  • adding crispy bacon for a savory element
  • adding potato chips for a salty crunch

Five Fun Things to Add to a Fluffernutter Sandwich

Peanut butter, Marshmallow Fluff, bread, and … bacon? Here are our five favorite things to add to a fluffernutter sandwich.

By Katherine Keenan

Sep 19 2022

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations11

Jam may seem like the most simple Fluffernutter addition, but the results are fantastic.

Some say you can’t mess with a classic. To them I say: bacon fluffernutters .

Fluffernutters are a beloved New England treat. Massachusetts has even tried to make them its official state sandwich. And yeah, I think they’re perfect just the way they are. But although this lunchroom classic  traditionally contains only peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff, it’s this same simplicity that makes the Fluffernutter the perfect foundation for more ingredients.

In 2016  we pan-fried a fluffernutter in butter per the recommendation of our Facebook audience. This year on National Fluffernutter Day we asked our Instagram audience to share more of their favorite ways to make a fluffernutter. They said to “add chips,” “add jam,” “add some Nutella,” or go full-on “Elvis style,” with bacon and banana. So we did.

Delivered Daily: New England Recipes and Tried & True Kitchen Tips from the Editors of Yankee Magazine

If you are a fluffernutter purist and therefore likely to disagree with what’s about to ensue, feel free to switch at this point to our article about the history of the fluffernutter . But if you’re ready to push the fluffernutter limits, read on.

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations5

Here are five terrific fluffernutter add-on ideas:

1. Fluffernutter with Potato Chips

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations4

With exactly the right amount of salt to dance around the Fluff’s sweetness (and a snappy crunch to counteract the soft bread), potato chips might be the perfect fluffernutter addition. If you’re like me and you enjoy eating fluffernutters on toasted bread, rejoice: The crunch of the chips adds a similar effect.

Here, I used baked ruffled potato chips for three reasons: They have a somewhat flat profile, which sits nicely in a sandwich; they’re extra crunchy; and they have a slightly lower fat content (which simply felt responsible, considering I was embarking upon an entire evening of fluffernutter-related madness).

2. Fluffernutter with Banana

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations9

For a fresh spin on the fluffernutter, add sliced bananas. Not only do they add interesting texture and flavor, they make this sweet concoction feel almost healthy. (Well, almost.)

3. Fluffernutter with Bacon

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations2

The bacon fluffernutter may be the most controversial of the lot. When I was a child, the PB&B (that’s peanut butter and bacon) was a household staple. But this? Another level.

The sandwich comes together quickly. I microwaved the bacon until it was crispy, about six minutes, buttered a nonstick skillet, and fried the sandwich for about a minute on each side.

Oh, and you’ll definitely want a napkin nearby when you eat this one, since grilling the sandwich will melt the peanut butter.

4. Fluffernutter with Nutella

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations12

This one seems like a no-brainer. Chocolate hazelnut spread, peanut butter, and Marshmallow Fluff pair perfectly. Now all that’s left to add is a large glass of milk.

Tip: Since the Marshmallow Fluff is the hardest to spread, put it on the bread first and then layer the peanut butter or Nutella over it.

5. Fluffernutter with Fruit Jam

Bacon Fluffernutter Variations11

What do you get when you cross a PB&J with a fluffernutter? Perfection. I used strawberry jam, but any flavor works. And as with the Nutella sandwich, make sure to spread the Fluff  first  so that you don’t run into any sticky situations.

Other ways to jazz up your fluffernutters:

  • Swap out the white bread for another kind of bread. We think cinnamon raisin, challah, or banana bread would work wonderfully.
  • On a gluten-free or wheat-free diet? No problem. Try a corn tortilla fluffernutter roll-up. Or layer Fluff and peanut butter on apple or celery slices.
  • “Fun-size” your fluffernutters by making them on crackers. Ritz crackers work especially well.
  • Make a fluffernutter using French toast or pancakes. Then it counts as breakfast — right?

What’s your favorite way to eat a fluffernutter?

Where to Eat and Drink in Saratoga for the Belmont Stakes

Pro tip: Sweet Mimi's lemon ricotta pancakes are worth the line.

fluffernutters travel

Solevo Kitchen and Social

Long Island has historically hosted the Belmont Stakes, but this year’s Triple Crown closer is betting on Saratoga Springs. While Belmont Park undergoes renovations for the next two years, Saratoga Race Course — known for the annual Travers — will act as the Stakes’ interim 2024 and 2025 host.

As Belmont weekend rapidly approaches, Saratoga is saddling up for visitors; the track can accommodate 50,000 people daily over the four-day racing event, with the Triple Crown’s final leg on June 8. In anticipation, local restaurants and bars have already participated in a Belmont Jewel cocktail contest , while restaurants like Italian-American joint Solevo Kitchen and Social are preparing festival-specific menus. The race course will serve various concessions , though spectators can also bring coolers with food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Beyond the actual track, Saratoga County’s farms are a racehorse breeding ground, so look out for foals — thoroughbreds are often born between January and May — as well as culinary pit stops. The farm shop at Schuylerville’s King Brothers Dairy serves ice cream in fun flavors like fluffernutter, while both 9 Miles East and Comfort Kitchen use local ingredients for farm-to-table fare.

Below, you’ll find additional suggestions for where to eat before, during, and after the Belmont races. Whether you want a sandwich for the grandstands or a brunch spot near Broadway, you’ll be champing at the bit for your next meal.

Sweet Mimi's Cafe & Bakery

Veer just off Broadway, Saratoga’s main thoroughfare, and you’ll stumble into this family-run cafe, perfect for a leisurely brunch. You may have to wait for a table — Sweet Mimi’s doesn’t accept reservations — but the lemon ricotta pancakes are worth any line. And make sure to snag a cinnamon roll to-go.

Sweet Mimi's Cafe and Bakery

Cardona’s Market

As much a deli as it is a market, Cardona’s sells Italian groceries and, more importantly, Italian meats. Pair mortadella or prosciutto with fresh mozzarella, or keep things classic with Saratoga’s best roast beef sandwich. Good luck leaving without an impulse purchase; a half moon cookie is a must.

Courtesy of Cardona's Market

Putnam Market

Peruse the shelves of this gourmet market to assemble the essentials: wine, cheese, and a specialty sandwich, like Putnam’s grilled cheese of the week. Take your lunch to the picnic tables at Saratoga Spa State Park, just a short drive away.

Putnam market

Hamlet & Ghost

With a name like Hamlet & Ghost, is it any surprise that this New American restaurant serves the coolest cocktails in town? Think — and drink — beyond a Belmont Jewel to try a spicy, honeydew margarita, or a maple, walnut, and blueberry amaro old fashioned. The mocktail list is equally creative, as is the short, but curated, dinner menu.

Victorian Sedefian

Common Roots Brewing Company

Signature cocktails capture the spirit of the Triple Crown, but beer doesn’t have to be the Belmont’s dark horse. In South Glens Falls, Common Roots Brewing Company sells both staple and seasonal craft brews on tap and in cans. Order a flight of IPAs alongside the crispy, fried chicken sandwich.

Jessica Mead / Common Roots Brewing Company

The Whistling Kettle

With three locations across the Albany region, The Whistling Kettle will transport you straight to London. Opt for the afternoon tea with a flavored chai and BLT scone sandwich. When only crumbs remain, browse the tea selection to pick up a few sample-sized bags of loose leaf.

With small plates, a raw bar, and entrees like filet mignon, 15 Church has earned its reputation as one of Saratoga’s top restaurants. It serves New American fare, replete with homemade pastas and a slew of specials. Reserve a seat on the outdoor patio, and order a few dishes to share.
