Fjällräven Ulvö 30 Backpack: An Honest Review

If you’re looking for an honest review of the Fjällräven Ulvö 30 backpack, you have come to the right place. I’ve been using this backpack since December 2021 and have been travelling with it full-time since February 2022.

When it comes to sustainable outdoor gear, Fjällräven is one of the most popular brands out there. You may already know their world-famous Kånken backpack, which was introduced in the late seventies, but Fjällräven has a large range of other hiking and travel backpacks as well.

This review of the Fjällräven Ulvö 30 backpack will tell you everything you need to know about this product before your purchase. I hope it will help you choose a backpack that fits your needs.

Who is the Fjällräven Ulvö 30 Backpack For?

The Fjällräven’s Ulvö 30 pack is very versatile and can be used for many occasions. It’s large enough for day hikes or day trips, small enough to use as a carry-on, and great for commuting to work, whether you’re walking, biking, taking public transportation or the car.

So far, I’ve used this backpack for day hikes, day trips and travelling, and I think it’s great for all of these activities!

Design of the Ulvö 30

The Fjällräven Ulvö 30 i s both a beautiful and versatile backpack that comes in two different colours: black and mountain blue. It also has a smaller sibling – the Ulvö 23 .

One of the things that I love the most about the backpack’s design is that it opens with a zipper that’s located on the back of the pack. It might take some getting used to, but it also makes it nearly impossible for anyone to sneak into the main compartment of the bag. This makes it the only backpack I have that I can wear without worrying about pickpockets.

Material & Durability

The Ulvö 30 is made out of bergshell, a waterproof fabric that was recently developed by Fjällräven. Bergshell consists of 31% recycled nylon , and not only is it very pleasant to touch, but it’s also extremely durable .

It’s good to know that this backpack’s zipper isn’t waterproof, but it does come with a bergshell flap covering and protecting it.

I’ve been using the Ulvö 30 in both dry and rainy weather conditions, and it hasn’t disappointed me! The pack is incredibly comfortable, and even when it was raining heavily, everything inside the bag stayed dry.

External Features

Removable hip belt and sternum straps.

The Fjällräven Ulvö 30 has a removable hip belt, which doesn’t have any padding but is comfortable and does the job. It’s also easy to adjust, just like the sternum straps, which can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically.

Compression straps

The compression straps on both sides of the backpack allow you to cinch in the volume of the pack and squish it closer to the frame. This brings the weight closer to your back and makes it more comfortable to wear.

Back panel and shoulder straps

Both the back panel and the adaptable shoulder straps are made of padded mesh, which makes the backpack super comfortable.

The back panel has air channels to make it more breathable and to avoid a sweaty back. As it’s currently winter here in Belgium , I haven’t worn it in the heat yet. But I will update this post as soon as I use it in hot weather. (which won’t be too long from now as I’ll be heading to Sri Lanka next month) .

Update : After backpacking in Sri Lanka , India , Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Pakistan for over two years, and using the Fjallraven Ulvo 30 as my daypack, I can say that it’s great to use in hot weather. The pack is breathable and doesn’t leave you with a sweaty back.

Side pockets

The Ulvö 30 has two stretchy side pockets, which are perfect for holding water bottles, hiking poles or other objects (I’ve used it to carry my phone, for example).

The side pocket on the right side of the pack (when you’re wearing it) also has a zipped pocket where you can store smaller items.

Top handle and loops

There’s a top handle to hang the pack up when you need to go to the bathroom, and there’s also a small loop to hang a bike light at the bottom of the backpack. The latter can also come in quite handy if you’re hiking in the dark, though.

Fjällräven’s Ulvö 30 also has a small loop on each shoulder strap. These can be used to attach more gear externally.

Inside the Pack

Zipped overlid.

On the very top of the bag, there’s a zipped overlid that lets you store items separately. This comes in handy if there are things you need to access more quickly. I’ve mainly used this pocket to store my headphones and wallet, but there’s enough space to store more items.

Just like the bag’s main department, the overlid also opens with a zipper located on the back of the backpack.

Gear divider and pockets

The first thing I noticed when I opened the main department of the Ulvö 30 for the first time is that it’s very spacious. It has enough space to fit my drone, camera, and tripod along with the rest of the things I usually bring with me.

There’s also a divider in the front and two pockets on the inside of the lid. These make it super easy to store items separately.

Padded laptop sleeve

The bag has a padded laptop sleeve ( 15″) that doesn’t touch the bottom so you won’t accidentally bump it on the floor. I haven’t tried it for this purpose yet, but this sleeve could also function as a place to store a hydration bladder.

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 Backpack Review: Final Thoughts

I’ve had this backpack for a little over two years now and it’s still my go-to bag. I just love how versatile it is.

The Fjällräven Ulvö 30 has all the features I need, it’s comfortable and spacious, and I love the fact that I don’t need to worry about pickpockets when I’m carrying it on my back, as the main compartment opens on the back of the pack. It also has plenty of dividers and separate pockets to store things separately.

All in all, I think the Fjällräven Ulvö 30 is a great backpack for hikers and travellers. It’s true that it does take some time to get used to the zipper that accesses the main department, but it definitely has its perks as well.

I brought this backpack on my long trip through Asia (which started in February 2022 and is ongoing) and it fits this purpose perfectly.

Usage timeline

I’ve been travelling with this backpack full-time since February 2022 and often use it as my daypack. Here’s how it’s doing:

I read reviews that the bottles tend to fall out of the side pockets, is that something you’ve experienced?

It depends on the size of the bottle in my experience. My previous bottle never fell out because it was tall enough to put one of the backpack’s straps around it (even when I didn’t put the strap around it it didn’t or rarely fell out)). The bottle I have now is smaller and lighter and it does fall out from time to time, though.

Hi Rod, thank you! 🙂 The bag doesn’t have an opening for a hydration bladder, It has a zipper that opens and closes from both sides, so I think you might be able to put the hydration bladder tube there, but I’m not sure if that’s very handy. Hope this helps!

Hi John! I put my camera in this bag; I put a scarf at the bottom of the main department and put my camera on top of it (it’s quite big with the lens so that works well for me) 🙂

As an ultra runner, I am used to wearing a small running vest to carry my fuel, water, and mandatory race kit. But my forthcoming 250k challenge across Tanzania will involve much more hiking, so I felt it was time to find a great hiking backpack.

I immediately fell in love with the Fjällräven Ulvö 30 because, unlike most bulky backpacks, which seem to have straps and elastic strings hanging off, it has an attractive minimalist design with space to hang  trekking poles . 

Marketed as an all-rounder, I decided to test it out on the trails as well as the train track. I used it for five-hour training hikes through fields and up hills, but I also tested it out on my weekly 90-minute commute on the train. 

As someone who likes to organize, I was exceptionally impressed with the usefulness of the backpack, which allowed me to order my kit (phone, food, water, treats, cables, spare battery, head torch, poles, and spare clothes) into lots of different spaces.

But unlike my running vests, which come in different sizes and have different male and female versions, the unisex, one-size design of the Ulvö 30 did not fit my body type that well. This was a real shame because everything else about it was perfect.

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 review: price and warranty

The Fjällräven Ulvö 30 retails for $150/£150 and is available in two colors; Black and Mountain Blue. This bag has a 30-liter capacity, but there is a smaller 23-liter edition, the Fjällräven Ulvö 23 , which is functionally and aesthetically similar but costs $125/£125.  

There is a  Limited Lifetime Warranty  (so long as you have proof of purchase from an authorized retailer), but it doesn't cover accidental damage from stains, sun damage, or wear and tear to the zippers and fabric. 

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 review: design

Despite its slim line design, this backpack is larger inside than it looks. The base extends downwards, and the 30-liter capacity is more than adequate for a day's worth of food, hiking gear, and spare clothing. 

You access the bag's internal storage from the top, which makes it easy to load up, but it also means you need to unzip it entirely if you want to grab something from inside. The Bergshell waterproofing is highly effective, with water droplets rolling off the material as soon as they hit.

The Ulvö 30 is a very good-looking bag with a stylish look more suited to the city commuter than your average hiker. This is not surprising given that the Swedish company has a reputation for well-designed apparel, and the bag is marketed as a daypack for traveling and everyday use.

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 review: storage and organization

What I absolutely loved about this backpack was the number of pockets and meshes to stash away different items. The spacious main compartment is divided into two sections, plus a padded laptop pocket for a device up to 15 inches. 

There is also a large zippered front top pocket plus an attachment loop for a bike lamp. Inside this top pocket are two more zippered sections ideal for storing smaller items like cables and chargers.

There are two meshed sections on either side for carrying bottles and a sneaky zippered side pocket just big enough to store a small cell phone or emergency sweets. Since my walking poles fold into three sections, there were plenty of places to keep them, including the side meshes. 

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 review: fit and comfort

For everyday use, such as a commute on the train, the fit and comfort were more than adequate. Unfortunately, for longer hikes, the unisex fit did not seem to accommodate women very well.

The chest strap and hip belt, which can be detached, helped to hold the pack in place and take the strain off my back. But as a slight woman, I found a lot of spare strap length flapping about and no obvious place to tidy it away.

The back has a mesh to help with ventilation, but sweat is still inevitable since the bag sits directly on your back. My major gripe was that I needed to pull the chest straps quite tight due to my small size. This resulted in the main vertical straps curving inwards, digging into my chest right in the middle of my breasts.

Although it'd be fine to fit the bag loosely when jumping on and off the train and for short walks, for long hikes with a lot of weight in the back, I needed the straps tighter to take the strain. But this resulted in an uncomfortable fit around the chest, though by broader, flat-chested husband was more happy with the fit. 

Fjällräven Ulvö 30 review: verdict

I loved the look and practicality of this backpack, which was brilliant as a commuter bag or for a picnic with the kids. However, the unisex fit only works for some body shapes, which is a real shame as I'd love to be able to use it for long hikes too.

Although you could use it on shorter walks, the top-loading design makes it slightly awkward to access essentials without stopping. The thoughtful design means plenty of places to store all your daily essentials and keep them organized. 

Whether this is the right hiking backpack for you depends on the types of walks you prefer. This is a great option if you're after a mid-sized bag with an attractive design. But you might be better with one of these alternatives if you're after a more traditional hiking or commuting backpack. 

Fjällräven Ulvö 23

If you're after a daily commuting backpack, there's the Fjällräven Ulvö 23 , a 23-liter edition of thw Ulvö, which may be more practical for shorter walks or hikes of less than three hours. It has the same design; it's just slightly smaller and cheaper. 

Helly Hansen Transistor

The Helly Hansen Transistor is more of a traditional hiking backpack, with greater hip support and straps with slightly more padding for extra comfort. This 30-liter bag also has mesh ventilation to keep things cool and trekking pole attachments.

Terms & conditions 1. General 1.1. The following terms and conditions apply to all orders placed by the customer (hereinafter referred to as "you“) with Ryslev Outdoor Pvt. Ltdreferred to as "Ryslev Outdoor Pvt. Ltd“ or "we“ at fjallraven-india.in.

1.2. We reserve the right to amend these Terms from to time without prior notice to you. The version of the Terms that will apply to your order will be those on the website at the time you place your order.

1.3. Contract language is English. 2. Prices and delivery charge 2.1 The prices and offers displayed on the Website are valid at the time they occur unless other specific terms are stated on the Website. Prices in stores, in catalogues and online may deviate from each other.

2.2. Whilst we make every effort to ensure that details are correct, we cannot be held responsible for any pricing or printing or spelling errors. 3. Ordering 3.1. Only persons over eighteen year’s age can place an order. Additionally, the order may not be placed for your or a third party´s commercial or self-employed activity. The delivery of goods only occurs in small amounts.

3.2. Each order submitted constitutes an offer to purchase merchandise from us. Orders are subject to our acceptance.

3.3. Once you have placed your order, and have supplied us with your email address, you will receive an order confirmation email. This receipt confirmation does not represent acceptance of your order but merely informs you that your order has been received. No purchase contract takes place until we dispatch the ordered product to you.

3.4. If for any reason we are unable to fulfill your order, we will let you know at the earliest opportunity. If payment for an order is processed and if we have already accepted payment for the order, this will be refunded using the payment method which you chose.

4. Delivery 4.1. We strive to keep the delivery time as short as possible.

4.2. Orders submitted on weekends and public holidays will be processed the following business day. We aim to deliver your order within the estimated timeframes but delays can occur. Of course you have the right to cancel your order if delivery is delayed.

4.3. Shortly after your order has been confirmed, you will receive an order confirmation email with details of your order. You can check the status of your order at any time by signing into your Account.

5. Cancellation rights If you change your mind or are not completely satisfied with any item(s), you may cancel or return your order from the date you place your order until 14 days after receipt of the ordered item(s) without any reason by giving written notice and returning the goods. The returned items provided that all unused items with their original packaging and garment tags still attached.

6. Payment methods You can only pay with for the goods. Please read our  payment information . 7. Retention of title

The goods delivered to you will remain the property of Ryslev Outdoor Pvt. Ltd until payment is completed. As long as the property has not yet officially been handed over to you, you are obliged to handle the goods with the utmost care. If the delivered goods are seized or exposed to any interference by a third party, you are obliged to inform us of this immediately and in writing.

8. Product presentation and information

Whilst we strive to be very thorough regarding our product decommonions, product images and product colours, sometimes there might occur small mistakes. We can not guarantee that the colours of clothes are reproduced completely accurately. This is because the colours you see depend on the type of computer you have and the settings on it as well as the internet browser you use.

Should a product lack any features described or should an image not be an accurate representation of the product, of course, you are entitled to return it according to our return policy stated  here  without any additional costs. Please note and understand that we cannot give any discounts or other gestures of goodwill beyond the applicable legal warranty. 9. Guarantee 9.1 We offer a 1 year warranty period that starts from the purchase date stated on your receipt. For a warranty claim to be processed you should be able to present a receipt. During this period, we are fixing all faults that fall under the statutory warranty obligation. The warranty does not cover damages caused by misuse, normal wear, or damages caused by external impacts. Action during the warranty period means that the product is either repaired or replaced, the right to choose alternative may be limited by legal restriction.

If it is not possible to deliver a replacement product you may choose to terminate the purchase contract or accept a discount.

9.2 In the case of an authorized claim, Fjällräven will reimburse the return shipping costs.

9.3 If you wish to submit a warranty claim on a product purchased through our website, please contact our customer service via e-mail [email protected] 9.4 Note that we only accept goods purchased through our website, www.fjallraven.in For goods purchased in a store/through resellers, the warranty issues should be handled by the respective place of purchase that is specified on your receipt. 10. Damage in transit In the event of damage occurred in transit please report any visible damage directly to the carrier which has delivered the parcel to you. 11. Liability Nothing in these Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from our negligence. 11.2. We do not:

• accept any liability for damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from your use of the Website;

• guarantee which content and services will be available on the Website. All content and services on the Website are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis; or

• guarantee that the Website will be available uninterrupted and in a fully operating condition nor that the information on the Website itself will be free from errors or omissions (however, we will use all reasonable endeavours to correct any errors or omissions as soon as practicable once they have been brought to our attention).

11.3. Our total liability to you for any loss or damage arising in connection with this agreement shall be limited to the total price of your order. 12. Force majeure

We are not responsible for any delay or failure to comply with our obligations under these Terms if the delay or failure arises out of any event which is beyond our reasonable control. Such events shall include, without limitation, failure of infrastructure, government intervention, wars, civil commotion, hijacking, fire, flood, accident, storm, strikes, lockouts, terrorist attacks or industrial action affecting us or our suppliers.

13. Privacy policy We have a Privacy Policy outlining how your personal data will be processed and protected by Ryslev Outdoor Pvt. Ltd. 14. Assignment Ryslev Outdoor Pvt. Ltd reserves the right to assign and to pledge any claims for payment that are due and have arisen in connection with goods delivered to third parties.

Copyright and other The design of this Web Site and all text, graphics, information, content, and other material displayed on or that can be downloaded from this Web Site are protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws and may not be used except as permitted in these Terms and Conditions or with our express prior written permission. 16. Final provisions 16.1. These Terms will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Indian and any disputes that may arise shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Indian courts.

16.2. If any of these Terms are found to be invalid by any court or regulator, the other Terms shall continue to apply.
