An Incredible 10 Day Scotland Road Trip Itinerary

' src=

Are you trying to figure out how to spend 10 days in Scotland? Here is my 10 day Scotland road trip itinerary. I will talk about the Scottish road trip my family took as first time visitors – an excellent introduction to Scotland.

In 2020, I had a 2-week period where I wanted to visit Scotland by car. Given that I would be driving from Hertfordshire, just north of London, I allowed for two days to get to Scotland and two days to drive home.

10 day itinerary - Glenfinnan Viaduct

Ten days may seem like a long time, but when you are on your trip, the time can fly by. Even with a 10 day Scotland itinerary, there were many things I had to miss because I simply did not have enough time. I have included these options in case you manage to squeeze these spots in your Scotland trip.

Read on to find out more about my recommended 10 day road trip to Scotland.

How to Get to Scotland

Lake District - on the way to Scotland

There are many options where you can start your road trip – it typically depends on where you are coming from. For those flying internationally, there are three airports to choose from: Glasgow, Edinburgh, or Inverness.

To follow my itinerary for Scotland if you are taking a flight to Scotland, I recommend you fly into Glasgow and out of Edinburgh. You could pick up a rental car at either of these airports.

Sometimes car rental companies charge an additional fee if you do not return the car to the same place where you picked it up. However, the driving distance between Glasgow and Edinburgh is only an hour. So, you could drop it off at the same place and book round-trip flights.

Book your car rental with Expedia here .

If you are driving from somewhere in the UK for your road trip in Scotland, you are flexible to start and end your road trip wherever is convenient.

I drove from Hertfordshire up through the Lake District, spending a night there. Then, I entered Scotland near Glasgow.

I finished my holiday in Scotland in Edinburgh, and then I drove through Northumberland and the Peak District on my journey back to the South of England.

For the international travellers – if you want to add your road trip to Scotland to another destination, I would suggest flying to London and spending a few days there. You can then take the train up to Edinburgh where you can pick up a rental car.

Scotland 10-Day Itinerary Route Map

Where to Visit on Your 10 Day Scotland Road Trip?

If you are looking to put together your road trip around Scotland, here are some suggestions of places to visit.

Loch Lomond

Glenfinnan viaduct.

  • Isle of Skye
  • Cairngorms National Park
  • Highland Perthshire

10 Days in Scotland Itinerary

Day 1 – visit loch lomond and drive to glencoe.

Loch Lomond, Scotland

Your first day in Scotland will be busy, but also an excellent start to your road trip. Assuming you are starting your journey in Glasgow, Edinburgh or the north of England, you will be able to visit all the spots I recommend for day one.

Start your road trip with something typical of Scotland – lochs. For those who did not realise, the meaning of a loch is a lake.

When you think of lochs in Scotland, many people instantly think of Loch Ness. But when I spoke to Scottish friends, they told me that Loch Ness is rather touristy and that there are other better lochs to see. However, if you are flying from Inverness airport and going via Loch Ness, you should look for the Loch Ness Monster and stop at nearby Urquhart Castle.

As a result, the first stop of my journey around Scotland was Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. I suggest a visit to Loch Lomond for one day.

Visiting Loch Lomond is not as simple as typing its location into Google Maps and showing up at the point on the map. You also need to have an idea where around the loch you want to visit.

Luss village in Loch Lomond. Good starting point for Scotland 10 day itinerary

My first stop in Loch Lomond was to Balloch, the southern-most point and the first town you will reach from the Glasgow area. Balloch is also the starting point for boat tours of the loch.

I was eager to get out onto the water, so I booked tickets that day for the afternoon cruise. You can also book your Loch Lomond boat tour here .

My next stop on Loch Lomond was to a small village called Luss. You can stroll along the lakefront, rent a pedalo and walk onto the pier. Quaint cottages line the streets of Luss, which is worth a short walk around.

I stopped for lunch at  Coach House Coffee Shop and Store . It is a good lunch stop with sandwiches, soups and cakes, and it is also very dog-friendly.

Driving to Glencoe

White cottage Glencoe Scotland

At the end of your visit to Loch Lomond, start the journey to Glencoe, where you will spend the next few nights.

The drive from Loch Lomond to Glencoe is scenic, so I recommend you drive slowly. If you pass a particular spot, you can pull into the side of the road safely. There are also walks from these locations, so put your hiking shoes on for the drive.

One of my recommended stops is at Loch Tulla Viewpoint, found slightly north of Bridge of Orchy. There is a big car park that you can stop at and get a view across Loch Tulla.

Loch Tulla Viewpoint - Glencoe, Scotland

You will pass many beautiful sites on the A82 to Glencoe, but you can easily come back the next day to properly explore and take photos of Glencoe.

As you get closer to Glencoe, look for deer in the fields on the side of the road. Deer are often found around Rannoch Moor and in front of the Kingshouse Hotel. I saw deer but did not stop in time to take a picture, so keep an eye on the map as you approach the area.

Shortly after this, you will pass the turning to Glen Etive, somewhere you should make sure you visit. However, a visit to Glen Etive will not be a quick stop because the scenery is impressive, and you will want to witness it all. You will need around 2 – 3 hours to visit Glen Etive.

Therefore, if you have the time, you could visit Glen Etive on day one – otherwise, I recommend saving it for day two.

Day 2 – Visit Glenfinnan Viaduct and Explore Glencoe

Another busy day lies ahead, but with only 10 days to see as much of Scotland as possible, you need to prepare for some long days!

Best part of Scotland Itinerary - Glenfinnan Viaduct

Start your morning by driving to Glenfinnan Viaduct. You may know it as the Harry Potter Bridge that the Jacobite Steam train travels along.

I recommend you visit Glenfinnan Viaduct during the morning schedule. If you are staying in Glencoe, the drive will take you nearly an hour, plus you need to arrive with plenty of time to park because it can get pretty busy.

Seeing the train puffing along the viaduct is not as easy as it seems. Read my article on how to make your visit to the Glenfinnan Viaduct a success .

After you visit Glenfinnan Viaduct, you can stop for a casual lunch in Fort William and then return to Glencoe for an afternoon of exploring again.

The town of Fort William itself is not an attraction in itself, but it is the largest town in the area, so you will likely get all your groceries and petrol from here. Fort William is also a popular town to stay in when climbing Ben Nevis.

Be aware that the number of midges of Glencoe and Fort William are extremely high, so when you are visiting the Glenfinnian Viaduct, Glencoe etc, you should be wearing:

  • insect repellent
  • long sleeves
  • net hat to shield your face from the swarming insects

Read more about suggested products for midge repellent in this Scotland packing list .

Glencoe road Scotland

After you return from Fort William, you can explore Glencoe some more.

A visit to Glencoe was one of my favourite parts of the whole trip. The dramatic landscapes in Glencoe were impressive. Plus, there are many things to see and do in the area, such as scenic walks and finding spots from the Harry Potter world.

I felt like Glencoe gave me a good impression of the Scottish Highlands and it looks the same as it does in the James Bond film Skyfall.

While researching Glencoe before my trip started, many people recommended visiting Glencoe, but they were not specific in their recommendations. Therefore, I intend to be more specific on what you can do while there.

Many of the most spectacular views of Glencoe are on the drive to Glencoe along the A82. You will have seen a glimpse of the beautiful scenery from the car window on the way to Glencoe. To get the most out of your trip, you should return to this stunning road where you can get out of the car and walk around.

The white cottage seen frequently in images is also one of the most famous views in Glencoe. There are several white cottages around Glencoe. You can find one on Google maps called “Glen Coe Photography House”. You will see the houses as you drive along the A82 towards Loch Achtriochtan.

Also, consider stopping at Three Sisters Viewpoint or Hidden Valley car park for a great view just outside Glencoe.

Note: there is limited mobile reception in Glencoe, so you should download offline maps on your phone. There are toilets in the Glencoe Visitor Centre; however, you need to pay £4 to park and use their facilities.

If you did not already visit Glen Etive while driving to Glencoe, you should return to this area. Make sure to capture a picture of Buachaille Etive at the start of the road to Glen Etive off the A82.

Glencoe Lochan

Glencoe Lochan, Scotland

When you are back in Glencoe, you can walk around Glencoe Lochan. It is a nature trail that is accessible for all abilities and is in a beautiful setting.

Glencoe Lochan is quite a short walk that will take you about an hour if you take it slowly and stop to take photos etc. There is a free car park to use while you walk the trail.

Finally, one for Harry Potter fans – you can go and find the filming location of Hagrid’s Hut. It is a relatively short walk up some hills, but it is a fun exploration. It takes some imagination to see the area how it was in the films.

Hagrid’s Hut is close to Glencoe Lochan. Park on the side of the road near to Clachaig Inn and walk from there.

Where to Stay in Glencoe and Fort William

Fort William and Glencoe are very close to each other, just a 25-minute drive apart. So, you can make either one your base for a few nights. If you would like to be closer to Glenfinnan Viaduct, you should stay in Fort William. If you prefer to be closer to nature in Glencoe, then you should stay there.

You can also opt for something in between, such as the small town of Onich where there are a few VRBO rentals around this area.

Day 3 – Day Trip to Oban

Oban Whiskey Distillery

Deciding to visit Oban during your 10 day itinerary of Scotland is based on your interests. Oban is known for its whisky. If you are a fan of whisky, it is worth adding Oban to your Scotland itinerary.

In my situation, my Dad wanted to go to Oban, so we made sure to include it in the itinerary. However, I am aware that there are other better whisky distillery experiences throughout the country, so do not discount those.

There are other things to see and do in Oban other than whisky. Firstly, you can visit McCaig’s Tower that has a sprawling view of the city from above.

Secondly, it is a port-town, so you can go on a boat trip from there. Such as a visit to the Isle of Mull (and Tobermory the town where the British TV show Balamory was filmed). From the Isle of Mull, you can take a boat to Staffa to see puffins . I went on a tour to Staffa and it exceed my expectations.

You need to book the ferry rides in advance because they do sell out on the day.

I ate lunch at Lorne Bar in Oban, which was another dog-friendly restaurant.

Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker near Oban

Near Oban is Castle Stalker – a fascinating mini castle (house) located in the middle of Loch Linnhe. You could stop here when visiting Oban.

Park at Castle Stalker View café and make sure you stop there for a drink and snack before or after your visit to support the cafe. They serve some tasty treats.

Put your walking boots on and head down towards the water.

To get closer to Castle Stalker, you will need to walk through trees on a steep and precarious path. Turn left when you get to the bottom of the slope.

Day 4 – Drive to Mallaig for the ferry to Isle of Skye

Arisaig beach near to Mallaig

This morning, you will pass Glenfinnan Viaduct on the way to the Isle of Skye. Therefore, I recommend attempting to see the Jacobite Steam Train again. You may get different weather or the chance to watch the train from another angle.

When driving from Fort William to the Isle of Skye, there are two options. You can drive the road north until you get to the Isle of Skye bridge. Or you can drive to Mallaig and take the ferry across to Armadale on the Isle of Skye.

The route you take depends on the location of your accommodation in Skye. Both routes offer spectacular views and scenery so you will be happy with either choice. If you take the ferry on the way there, you can drive over the Isle of Skye Bridge on the way to your next stop and see the places I recommend.

Ferry to Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye ferry Scotland

If you are taking the ferry to Skye, you must reserve a ticket a few days in advance because there are only a few spots available on the day left over for emergency vehicles or the earliest arrivals.

For the route via ferry to the Isle of Skye, I suggest stopping at Eilean na Moine after Glenfinnan Viaduct. Eilean na Moine is another site for Harry Potter fans (Dumbledore’s resting place), but also a beautiful location on Loch Eilt. Parking is limited here since it is a small lay-by.

On your way to Mallaig, you can stop at some white sand beaches to stretch your legs. Silver Sands of Morar and Camusdarach Beach are both lovely beaches. The beach you should visit depends on where you find a parking spot because a parking spot is hard to find.

I aimed for the general area of Silver Sands of Morar with the SatNav and then played it by ear because parking was difficult in some parts. I ended up at Arisaig beach.

Mallaig is only 10 minutes further from these beaches, so it is convenient to visit these beaches before taking the ferry from Mallaig.

For more information on taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye, make sure you check out my guide to road trips in Scotland .

Driving over the Isle of Skye Bridge

The Five Sisters of Kintail

If you left it too late to book tickets for the ferry to Isle of Skye, or the route is more convenient to go by land, there are some lovely things to see on the way.

The Five Sisters of Kintail is a stunning mountain range that you will pass on your way to Skye. To get the best view of The Five Sisters of Kintail, I recommend going to Ratagan Pass viewpoint. For another beautiful viewpoint on the route, stop at Loch Duich Viewpoint (Carr Brae).

As you continue your journey to the Skye bridge, you will also pass Eilean Donan Castle. I recommend you stop because the car park is free and you can take photos of the outside of the castle without paying an entrance fee.

Suggested Hotels for Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is a popular destination with accommodations booking up far in advance. However, if you do not manage to reserve a hotel or holiday rental in the Isle of Skye, it is also possible to go on day trips to the Isle of Skye from somewhere just outside Skye.

A day trip is best if you have two adults who can share the driving because it can be tiring, but it is doable.

Day 5 to 7 – Exploring Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye - Old man of Storr. One of my favourites on 10 day Scotland road trip

Once you arrive on the Isle of Skye and its surrounding villages, it is easy to see why it is so well-loved. There is plenty to do there to keep you occupied for many days. It includes hikes for all abilities, waterfalls, sweeping landscapes and a whole lot of greenery.

I would recommend spending three days in the Isle of Skye because it increases your chances of having a day with good weather . Three days in Skye also means you can return to a particular spot and not rush or miss out on any sights.

Some of the places I suggest you visit in the Isle of Skye include:

  • Old Man of Storr
  • Neist Point Lighthouse
  • Coral Beach
  • Fairy Pools

Neist Point Lighthouse and Coral Beach are located down a single track road. This means you should visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the traffic that can build up.

I wrote a detailed blog post on what to do in Isle of Skye and shared my suggested Skye itinerary , so make sure you check it out. However, for a quick breakdown, this is how I suggest you spend three days in the Isle of Skye.

Parts of the Isle of Skye can be a relatively far drive from each other. Therefore, you should plan to spend each day in a separate part of the Isle of Skye, as I have suggested below.

Neist Point Lighthouse

1st Day on Isle of Skye – Trotternish Loop

  • Breakfast at Café Arriba in Portree (if breakfast is not included at your accommodation)
  • Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls
  • Falls of Rha
  • Quiraing –  It is possible to include this in the itinerary if you plan on a quick stop or there is enough daylight/time to complete the whole hike

2nd Day on Isle of Skye – West Skye

  • Quiraing – again if missed the day before – but consider the location of your lodging
  • Dunvegan Castle
  • Neist Point Lighthouse – sunset is a lovely time to visit
  • Dinner at The Three Chimneys

3rd Day on Isle of Skye – South Skye

  • Fairy Pools – best to go early to ensure a car park spot
  • Talisker Distillery – optional if this is a strong interest of to swap out another activity
  • Isle of Skye boat trip – check in advance the different locations and start times
  • Sligachan Old Bridge
  • Coo view point
  • Eilean Donan Castle – if you did not visit it earlier when arriving in Isle of Skye

If you are not staying in Portree, I suggest a quick visit to walk around the Harbour on any day that you pass it.

Day 8 – Venturing on a Highland Safari

Driving to highland perthshire.

As I mentioned previously, if you are driving from the Isle of Skye to Highland Perthshire, there are some lovely sights to see on the way. Such as various viewpoints of The Five Ladies of Kintail and Eilean Donlan.

I want to mention additionally that as you are driving through parts of the Highlands and crossing into Cairngorms National Park, there is no mobile service and very few stops for bathroom breaks and refreshments. So, plan according.

Highland Safari

Highland Safari land rover

My next stop was Aberfeldy for a Highland Safari. There is a café where you can have lunch at the Highland Safari.

The idea of it is that you go out with your local guide in a land rover and drive through the mountains or forest (you choose) looking for wildlife.

I chose the mountain safari, which meant we were on the search for deer and eagles. I think the whole experience is worth the drive, even if it is out of the way for you.

You need to book this in advance because they have two slots a day – 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Therefore, if you are driving from the Isle of Skye, you need to opt for the afternoon visit.

Gleneagles Hotel

After the Highland Safari, I spent the next two nights at the Gleneagles hotel. It is only an hour away, so it is a great place to stay in combination with the Highland Safari.

My family stayed at Gleneagles hotel for two nights because some family members wanted to play a round of golf (or two). I highly recommend staying at Gleneagles for two nights because it means you get a full day at the hotel and a chance to try out several of the incredible restaurants.

Day 9 – Gleneagles Hotel

Gleneagles hotel Scotland

After such a busy 10 days in Scotland, you will be grateful for a day of recharging the batteries at a luxury hotel.

You need to make reservations for activities before arriving at the hotel, such as your breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you plan to play a round of golf at Gleneagles, you also need to arrange that.

If you do not want to play golf, there is still plenty to do at the hotel. For example, exploring the hotel grounds, playing pitch and putt, riding a bike around the property, visiting the hotel pool (requires booking) and looking around the shops inside the Gleneagles hotel.

Pay attention to the dress code for the dinner restaurants because many require a suit jacket for men.

Read more: What to pack for Scotland

Day 10 – Drive to Edinburgh and onwards

After a final breakfast at Gleneagles, set off for Edinburgh, which is around an hour’s drive from Auchterarder. Unless you wish to visit Stirling Castle, which is a slight detour on the drive from Auchterarder to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh street - 10 day Scotland road trip

What is a visit to Scotland without stopping in Edinburgh? I had not originally planned to spend time in Edinburgh. However, after leaving the Gleneagles hotel, I realised how close it was. I decided to stop just for a few hours, given that it was en route to my next destination, Northumberland.

It was a flying visit, but luckily the city is relatively small, and many sights are close to each other. During my afternoon visit, I managed to see a lot of the old town, such as Royal Mile, Grassmarket, Cowgate, Victoria Street and, of course, Edinburgh Castle.

If you want to maximise your time in Scotland, check out one of these tours:

  • 3-hour walking tour of Edinburgh
  • Scenic bike ride of Edinburgh

If you plan to stay the night in Edinburgh, I recommend The Balmoral Hotel . You could stay in the suite where J.K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

What Can Be Changed in this 10 Day Itinerary Scotland?

You may notice that a few places are missing from this itinerary. For example, the North Coast 500 and Cairngorms National Park and some other islands or isles, such as the Isle of Harris. However, it is impossible to fit the whole of Scotland in only 10 days. Therefore, you may have to add these other destinations to your next trip road trip itinerary.

If you want to add more places to your itinerary, you will need to remove something. I would suggest removing Edinburgh, purely because it is easier to visit on its own another time. You may be more likely to take the train to Edinburgh for a weekend trip.

If you are looking to extend this 10 day trip into a 14 day tour of Scotland, I recommend visiting Isle of Mull and Isle of Harris. This is something that I didn’t have time to do and wished I had visited.

It is also possible to make this into a one week itinerary. You can remove the Highland Safari and Edinburgh, or remove Isle of Skye.

Day 2: Historical Sights and Proud Heritage

Enjoy a cup of coffee and a scone on the first full day of your Scotland trip as you prepare to embark on an unforgettable day with your mesmerizing professional blue badge guide. Your itinerary to Scotland is just beginning!

Many first-time visitors may not realize that Edinburgh is really two cities in one: Edinburgh Old Town, with its medieval streets, and Edinburgh New Town, the 18th-century masterpiece. Edinburgh’s “official” history began over 1,000 years ago when the castle was built. Old Town combines ancient streets, cobbled lanes, and striking architecture. This area includes Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral and the Royal Mile – a mile-long stretch connecting Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace – which links Edinburgh’s old town to Edinburgh’s new town. Its name reflects the   processional route taken by kings and queens for the last 500 years .  The winding streets lined with shops, galleries and cafés make it an ideal place for wandering.

Edinburgh’s New Town was built during the 18th-century Enlightenment period. Over 500 Georgian buildings line its elegant boulevards and squares. It is home to some of Edinburgh’s best museums, including the National Museum of Scotland, the Art Gallery and various luxury stores and boutiques. Edinburgh’s New Town is an ideal destination for architecture enthusiasts, with its imposing sandstone buildings standing proudly in contrast to the city’s cobbled streets. Visitors will also fall in love with the area’s many cafes, restaurants and bars – perfect for enjoying some traditional Scottish fare or a glass of whisky! After all, this is a Scotland vacation!

This morning your guide will take you on a journey through the Old Town and regale you with fascinating tales of intrigue, ambition, honor and love that shaped much of Scottish history.

Step inside the ancient walls of Edinburgh Castle, perched atop an extinct volcano. This majestic castle has been Edinburgh’s most famous landmark since its construction in the 12th century and remains a living testament to Edinburgh’s proud history. It is home to Scotland’s Crown Jewels, Mons Meg cannon and the Stone of Destiny.

Take your time exploring Edinburgh Castle , marveling at its remarkable architecture. This ancient fortress has overlooked Edinburgh since the 12th century and is one of the city’s greatest attractions.

Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Edinburgh’s iconic Mary King’s Close. Built in 1630, the Close is Edinburgh’s most famous alleyway and a reminder of its colorful past. The cobbled lanes are lined with 17th-century tenement buildings and showcase how residents spent their days. Mary King’s Clos is steeped in history, with connections to Edinburgh’s infamous witches Janet Horne and Euphane Maccalzean.

End your day in Edinburgh with a traditional Scottish meal and a pint at the White Hart Inn, believed to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh and the most haunted pub in Scotland. But get some rest. Your journey has only just begun!

Day 3: Exploring Scottish Gin

Today your Edinburgh adventure takes you to the Edinburgh Gin Distillery, one of Scotland’s most popular gin-producing establishments. Edinburgh Gin produces a range of award-winning gin spirits and liqueurs, including Edinburgh Classic, Edinburgh Rhubarb & Ginger and Edinburgh Raspberry Liqueur.

The distillery tour will give you an insight into the process of making Scotland’s favorite spirit, from crafting the recipes to carefully distilling each batch. You’ll hear about Edinburgh Gin’s brand story, explore one of Edinburgh’s oldest buildings, see the stills in action and learn more about their unique ingredients.

At the end of your tour, sample some of Edinburgh Gin’s award-winning gins and liqueurs and pick up a few bottles for yourself! From Edinburgh Classic to Edinburgh Pink Grapefruit & Rosemary, Edinburgh Gin has something to suit every palate. Edinburgh Gin offers a range of gift sets and hampers, perfect for any gin lover’s collection!

Then make your way to Cannonball House, one of Edinburgh’s oldest buildings. Cannonball House, located near Calton Hill, was originally a part of the town wall built in 1650 to protect the city from potential attack and is now home to The Cannonball Restaurant & Bar – an ideal spot for dinner with a view of the city skyline. Enjoy traditional Scottish fare with a modern twist before taking in stunning views of Edinburgh’s famous monuments, such as Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle.

By the end of your 3-day Edinburgh experience, you will have seen some of Edinburgh’s most iconic sights and tasted some of Scotland’s best whisky and gin. From Edinburgh Castle to Edinburgh Gin Distillery, there is truly something special around every corner in Edinburgh. But of course, the next leg of your journey is perhaps even more incredible. Tomorrow you will head to the iconic Gleneagles resort.

*During certain times of the year, visitors to Scotland can enjoy a truly special and unique experience – Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This mesmerizing event takes place annually on the castle esplanade. It features performances from military bands, pipes and drums, spectacular aerial displays from Royal Air Force planes and traditional Highland dances. Whether you’re a Scotsman or an international visitor, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an unforgettable experience! Tickets for Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo go on sale in May each year.

Day 4: Battlefields and Countryside

Depart Edinburgh and head on to the countryside to explore the stunning regions of Stirling and the Trossachs. The Trossachs National Park is a magnificent landscape of lochs, mountains and forests – perfect for outdoor activities such as walking, biking, kayaking or fishing. Take a few hours to hit the trails and take the vistas from a different point of view.

Then head over to the town of Stirling, home to the majestic Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.  It has played a pivotal role in Scottish history since before the 14th century, with its strategic location atop an extinct volcano. Climb the Upper Ward to see magnificent views across Stirlingshire and take in the castle’s grandeur – from grand halls and cobbled courtyards to secret turrets and gardens. Stirling Castle is also an important site for the Scottish Wars of Independence and was home to Robert the Bruce. Stirling Bridge and the Battle of Bannockburn are two other key battlefields in Stirling’s history. Consider booking a private or small group tour of these land marks with knowledgable guides.

Finally, arrive at your final destination for the evening, the incredible Gleneagles Hotel.

Itinerary to Scotland

Day 5: Gleneagles Golf

Gleneagles Hotel is a luxurious 5-star hotel in the heart of Scotland’s stunning countryside. Gleneagles has been the perfect spot for luxury getaways since 1924, and offers world-class amenities such as golf courses, spa facilities and fine dining experiences.

Golf enthusiasts will spend the day on the greens as Gleneagles Hotel is truly a golfer’s paradise. Located in the heart of Scotland, this historic hotel offers an unparalleled golfing experience for all ability levels. It has been voted “Best Golf Resort in the World” by Ultra Travel multiple times, and with three championship golf courses and Scotland’s PGA National Golf Academy, you can see that sport is at the heart of the resort’s spirit. The renowned courses wind through the rolling hills and weave their way around ancient castles, providing a truly memorable round of golf.

At the same time, those interested in staying off the course can explore Gleneagles’ sprawling grounds or participate in thrilling activities like gundog training or horseback riding. Gleneagles also offers extensive whisky tastings, masterclasses, and expertly curated food and wine pairings. End your evening with a sumptuous meal at one of Gleneagle’s highly acclaimed restaurants, such as The Strathearn or The Glendevon.

Day 6: Lessons in the Ancient Art of Falconry

Start the day with a walk along the magnificent grounds before meeting your expert Gleneagles hotel Falconer for an authentic Scottish Falconry experience. Falconry is the traditional art and sport of hunting with trained falcons, and falconers use specialist equipment and centuries-old techniques to fly their birds. The sport has a rich history in Scotland, and the Falconer’s expertise will help you understand the basics and build your confidence as they share stories of their amazing feathered friends. The experience allows you to get close to these magnificent creatures, interact with them, witness them flying and even have a go at handling one yourself! After your falconry session, take some time to explore Gleneagles’ many other attractions before enjoying another fantastic meal. This city is often a highlight on any itinerary to Scotland.

Day 7:   The Road to The Isles – Sea to Skye

After saying goodbye to the wonderful staff at Gleneagles, start your day with a leisurely drive along “The Road to The Isles.” This spectacular route follows the west coast of Scotland and passes through some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, including Glen Coe, Loch Lomond and Argyll Forest Park. Make sure you take frequent stops to soak up the scenery and appreciate nature at its finest.

Your final stop on this incredible journey is the Isle of Skye. Home to stunning natural landscapes and your next hotel.

By retracing “The Road to The Isles”, you will have seen some of Scotland’s most stunning landscapes. From ancient battlefields in Stirling to playful falcons in Gleneagles and awe-inspiring views on the Isle of Skye, this journey is guaranteed to leave you with beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

Day 8: Exploring the Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is a magical place that offers some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery and activities. Discover hidden coves and unspoiled beaches, or take an unforgettable boat trip around the Isle. Visit the Fairy Pools to marvel at its crystal-clear waters and towering cliffs, explore the Quirang for a stunning view of the Isle from above, stop in to admire Dunvegan Castle and Gardens and snap a few photos at the Old Man of Storr rock formation.

For those seeking more adventurous activities, the Isle of Skye is home to fantastic outdoor pursuits. Try rock climbing on dramatic seaside cliffs, deep sea fishing off the coast, or even sea kayaking along coastal inlets. If you prefer something less strenuous, there are still plenty of options, such as local whisky tastings or guided tours through the Isle’s stunning landscapes.

Day 9: Head Home or Continue Your Adventure

After exploring the Isle of Skye and participating in some thrilling activities. Depending on whether you are joining in for a 10-day or 14-day Scotland itinerary, it’s time to head back home or continue your Scottish adventure. If you are heading home, you will spend the night in Glasgow for a morning departure on day 10.

‘Wherever I wander, wherever I rove; the hills of the highland forever I love.’ – Robert Burns

If you choose to stay a bit longer, your journey takes you on to Inverness, passing through the Northwest Highlands. This area of outstanding natural beauty has been inspiring visitors for centuries with its captivating views and remarkable wildlife. There is something special for everyone, from dramatic mountain peaks and glacial lochs to rugged coastlines. Follow Glen Shiel and see the majestic “Five Sisters of Kintail”, then head to Loch Ness and experience a memorable private boat tour/monster-spotting expedition as you search for poor, misunderstood Nessie.

At the end of this unforgettable day, arrive in Inverness and relax for the evening. When it comes to choosing your accommodation for your time in Inverness, be sure to work with your luxury travel advisor to secure the best options and avoid any rental mishaps.

Day 10: Inverness and Whiskey

Today you have the opportunity to explore the city of Inverness at leisure. This vibrant and welcoming city is an excellent spot to wander its streets and discover its fascinating past. Visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle, situated on the banks of Loch Ness, or take a scenic cruise along the Caledonian Canal. After lunch, meet your guide and head out to Speyside Whisky Trail.

The Speyside Whisky Trail is an incredible journey through the heart of Scotland. Start in Elgin, home to some of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. Explore your way along cobbled streets and visit a few of the distilleries offering a sampling of their finest single malts, from world-famous brands to small local producers that provide a unique experience to whisky lovers. As well as sampling whisky, you can also discover secret lairs to learn about the history and craftsmanship that goes into making one of Scotland’s most famous exports. For those looking for more than just a dram, a trip along the Speyside Whisky Trail offers unparalleled glimpses into Scotland’s past. Consider pre-booking one of the many tours of the Speyside Whisky Trail.

Day 11: Road Trip to St. Andrews

From Inverness, your journey takes you to the mecca of golf and one of the most charming towns in Scotland, St. Andrews. This beautiful town has something for everyone. Visit the iconic St. Andrews Cathedral and stroll around its ancient ruins, explore tide-swept beaches, or challenge yourself to a round of golf on one of the many world-class courses in the area.

The famous 17th-century Swilken Bridge and the magnificent views from West Sands Beach and picturesque castle ruins in nearby Crail are a must-see during your visit.

Take time out from sightseeing to enjoy some of Scotland’s finest seafood restaurants, then afterward enjoy an evening stroll through cobbled streets filled with charming pubs and live music venues. For the true golf aficionado, seeing the famed fairways of the Old Course, including the iconic Swilcan Bridge and the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, is enough to get your heart racing.

The 5 star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Sp a is a great accommodation option for any golf enthusiast looking to stay right at the Old Course. Additionally, St. Andrews’s is home to another great gold resort, the Fairmont St. Andrews . Both of these hotels are great options on any itinerary to Scotland!

Day 12: A Day of Golf

While most golfers dream of playing the famed Old Course, the Jubilee Course at St. Andrew’s is one of Scotland’s most iconic courses. Designed by Harry Colt and opening in 1897, it has since seen some of the most legendary players in the game battle it out on its rolling fairways. With beautiful views of St Andrews Bay and its unique set of challenges, The Jubilee Course is a must for any golfer looking to test their mettle. From strategic bunkers to doglegs, The Jubilee Course offers an exciting round regardless of skill level. It promises a memorable experience that can only be found on the hallowed grounds of St Andrews.

‘Fantasy, myth, legend, truth – all are intertwined in the story that is Scotland.’ ― Laurence Overmire

If you prefer to play the Old Course, make some friends or get in line. Single golfers must join the singles’ line that starts forming early in the morning. Golfers are then slotted into other games where there is space if time permits. No guarantees. This is an essential for any golf lovers itinerary to Scotland.

This afternoon take care of some last-minute shopping and souvenirs and enjoy your farewell dinner as your adventurous itinerary to Scotland comes to a close.

Day 13: Depart Home

Your chauffeur will transfer you to the airport in time to check in for your flight, with plenty of memories to take along.

Scotland’s Glorious Playground: Capital to Countryside

day trips from gleneagles scotland

Leaving behind the skyscrapers of Manhattan for fresh air in my lungs and mud caked onto my Barbour boots acted as a recalibration.

Approaching touch down in Edinburgh, I couldn’t help but succumb to a state of calm. The Scottish accents from fellow passengers swirling around me combined with verdant landscapes beneath our Boeing’s wings served as reminders of the personal purpose fueling this escape. Like so many other Americans , my lineage is woven across an amalgamation of Western European countries, but no region is more prominent in our Douglas family tree than Scotland.

Our father-daughter trip was meant to be a return to our roots but also a discovery of sixteenth-century streets, the rolling hills of Perthshire fueled by tastes of Scottish whisky along the way. When choosing which hotels would anchor our adventure, the answer seemed obvious; no name is as synonymous with Scottish hospitality as Gleneagles . Even better, planning an itinerary that covered both Edinburgh and the countryside was a seamless process thanks to Gleneagles’ recently debuted city outpost, Gleneagles Townhouse , to perfectly complement its nearly one-hundred-year-old countryside estate.

Gleneagles Townhouse

Tucked away in Edinburgh’s bustling St. Andrew Square, you’ll find the grand yet intimate Gleneagles Townhouse – a 33-guestroom property with a discreet entrance and glamorous neo-Victorian vibe. Rooms embrace the building’s noble heritage with high ceilings, antique rugs, and free-standing tubs. The all-day restaurant serves international dishes like west coast langoustines and pumpkin and feta tarts. And in the rooftop bar, Lamplighters, you can sip cocktails inspired by author Robert Louis Stevenson, paired with panoramic views of the city.

Itinerary Itinerary

…personally invested in ensuring Scotland wrapped its arms around our family

Fresh off a direct flight from New York, we relished the efficiency of Edinburgh International Airport’s compact customs. After grabbing my bags and meeting my driver, we were off to Gleneagles Townhouse for the twenty-minute transfer. My camera made its debut just shy of ten minutes into the route when our driver-turned-tour-guide generously offered, “Would you like me to pull over so you can take a picture of where they filmed Harry Potter ? ” It was my first hint that the people I’d encounter for the following six days wouldn’t just be hospitable but personally invested in ensuring Scotland wrapped its arms around our family.

Located directly in the heart of Scotland’s capital city in St. Andrew Square, Gleneagles Townhouse made its debut in June 2022. As soon as you enter its nondescript entrance, you feel like you’re being invited into a secret club–and with that, you wouldn’t be wrong; the hotel is also home to a member’s club catering to the city’s creative set. Architecture fans will swoon at the revitalization of this former Bank of Scotland turned chic thirty-three key property. After a five-year renovation, it feels like a plush pink-meets-sea-foam-green paradise. From the moment I sipped on a cortado cozied up in The Spence ’s velvet banquets beneath the jaw-dropping dome ceiling, I didn’t feel the pull to be anywhere but present.

In the name of shaking jetlag, we hit the ground running with a brief walk along St. Andrew Square for some hearty fare to fuel our arrival day explorations. After savoring Dishoom ’ s cult-favorite daal, we used the beautifully curated map provided by Gleneagles Townhouse as our guide to head across Waverly Bridge to check out the cobbled walkways of Victoria Street . Located in Grassmarket–a region named in the 14th century when it was grounds for busy agricultural trade–you’ll find stores offering Scottish-made wears. Your inevitable search for the perfect Harris Tweed item (or two!) is sure to take hold; consider a stop at Walker Slater for poshly tailored tweed suits, coats, and accessories across their dedicated men’s and women’s shops. Or, if you’re like me, fall head over heels for a blazer at Kiltane that will most certainly be coming home with you.

For dinner, it seemed like a foregone conclusion to amble into a pub for traditional fish and chips. While there is no shortage of options, we found ourselves tucked into a booth at The World’s End for a pint and some traditional fare. An ensuing nightcap was only natural after a day spent getting the lay of the land–and what better place to do it than back at home base? Gleneagles Townhouse’s rooftop outlet, Lamplighters , is exclusively open to hotel guests and members. The venue’s exclusivity lends to lively conversations as the natural light streams through its expansive windows overlooking the entire city.

After clinking cocktails, a story was shared that helped all the pieces of the renovation project come to life. Sara, Head of Membership Experience, divulged, “If the Townhouse were a person, she’d be the well-traveled and eclectic counterpart to her more traditional sibling [Gleneagles]. She’d be the one who went away to collect furniture at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and sipped cocktails at a bohemian beach club in Ibiza before coming back home to Scotland to open Gleneagles Townhouse.”

There’s no better way to acclimate to a new timezone than waking up to work out. So while I was anticipating a moderately-sized weight room to match the hotel’s boutique size, this presumption overlooked that the facility also services its members. Instead, the tech-forward Gleneagles Townhouse gym is a hive of activity with a robust schedule of classes, personal training sessions, and perhaps even a sight of that Instagram-famous person you saw earlier in the morning while swiping Raya ( though that last example is, of course, purely anecdotal ).

In the capital city, all roads seem to lead to the Royal Mile, but ample history and cultural musings await beyond the main drag. We worked with the Gleneagles Townhouse team to book tickets to Edinburgh Castle to take in one of the U.K.’s most iconic attractions. When planning your castle visit, it’s recommended to block at least two hours for you to meander through the castle; our visit was on the abbreviated side, and it still took a fair bit of time to see The Great Hall, St Margaret’s Chapel, The Queen’s Embroideries, and the Honours of Scotland all housed in its complex. Alternatively, if art is more your scene, the National Portrait Gallery and Scottish National Gallery boast some of the world’s finest collections of art.

As the afternoon unfolded, we made time to go to the Royal Yacht Britannia located just two miles outside of town. If, like me, you’d watched The Crown season five and wondered, “ what happened to the Royal Yacht Britannia?” then your answer lies here in Edinburgh. Our private tour here began with a red carpet arrival before being whisked through the vessel’s perfectly preserved quarters. We were in awe walking the exact halls where Her Majesty entertained royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities from around the world, and even more fascinated to see her humble twin bed in the State Apartments. We finished our deep dive into royal history with some afternoon tea accompanied by champagne and scones aboard, the experience surely marking a highlight of our time in Scotland’s capital city.

For our last night in town, dinner at The Spence was in order. Accompanied by the hotel’s dynamic General Manager, Alberto, we were able to get further insight into how this Condé Nast Traveler Hot List property is marrying the traditions of Gleneagles with a city twist. As Alberto opened up his camera roll to share photos of a live jazz performance held on property earlier in the week, its position as the “long-lost love child” as opposed to “sister hotel” rings true. In the restaurant–open to hotel guests, members, and outside diners alike–we dined on modern Scottish-inspired cuisine by Head Chef Jonny Wright paired with well-balanced cocktails. Nods to the cultural undercurrent around sober curiosity can be found both on their soft cocktail menu, which my sister and I particularly enjoyed. For dessert, don’t miss the unexpected piña colada baked Alaska for two. If you’re up for hard liquor, “The Scientist” cocktail featuring Glenfiddich twelve-year-old whisky will send you straight to Scottish dreamland.

Our third morning in Scotland began with soaking up our final meal at The Spence before our scheduled transfer to Gleneagles. With the arrival of a sleek Range Rover directly to the front steps of the Townhouse, there was a twinge of inevitable sadness that came with check out, but it was quickly overruled by a buzz of anticipation around the second leg of our trip. The scenic route took just over an hour as we swapped stories with our friendly chauffeur as we chatted through the history of Gleneagles’ three golf courses –one of the main draws of the destination for my dad and so many other avid golfers. In what seemed like simply the passage of a handful of stories swapped, we were winding through the estate’s palatial grounds for our arrival. With a warm wave from Helen to greet us at the front steps, we were ushered in and wholly embraced by the entire Gleneagles team.

One of the most special parts of arriving at the ninety-nine-year-old property is being welcomed by Richard, a twenty-three-year veteran of Gleneagles who has touched nearly every aspect of the guest experience since starting on the food and beverage side of things. Today, his role as Lobby Host is to manage the flurry of guest activity in the lobby–and maybe even arrange for a few adult beverages while guests get settled in. We were fortunate enough to do a walk-through with him where we learned more about how the grounds have played host to royalty and esteemed world leaders, particularly the 2005 G8 Summit . “Out here is where I served tea and coffee for Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair,” he shared, pointing to the grass just outside The Strathern. With walls lined with photos showcasing the legends like actor Sir Sean Connery and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, in addition to a slew of golf pros, you can practically feel the heartbeat of the hotel pulsating through its finery.

If you haven’t already coordinated it with your agent, inquire with the Playground Planners to rent wellies and a Barbour jacket.

After settling in your suite–for families, we recommend the Two-Bedroom Whisky Suites to really get space to spread out–head down to chat with the Playground Planners. While your SmartFlyer advisor will happily pre-book your activities prior to arrival to ensure a completely custom itinerary, the nature of travel is that things often change (whether because of Scotland’s temperamental weather or your mood). Fine-tune any tee times, archery lessons, picnics, and more based on what you’re hungry to explore. If you haven’t already coordinated it with your agent, inquire with the Playground Planners to rent wellies and a Barbour jacket. On your way back through The Retail Arcade, dip into the various boutiques for clothing, homewares, and beauty products from brands like Dr. Barbara Sturm.

For dinner, a reservation at the recently renovated restaurant, The Birnam, will have you questioning if you’re in Italy or indeed, the Scottish countryside. We found ourselves enraptured by the fresh seafood pasta and pesto-marinated olives that tasted so briney and delicious, they may as well have been candy. Our dessert–an Amalfi lemon sorbet downed with limoncello–stole the show, though. If you’re up for another drink, The Century Bar beacons.

We woke up refreshed and ready for a full day of activities on our first full morning at Gleneagles. But first, it was down to breakfast in The Strathearn where Richard’s suggestion to request a table in the Orangery found us basking in the bright morning light. It’s impossible not to be in awe here amongst the whirr of a perfectly executed breakfast service. The hardest decision of the day was whether to indulge in Nutella pancakes off the made-to-order menu, or peruse the buffet featuring delicacies like cured Scottish salmon, individually fired shakshuka, an entire wall of fresh-squeezed juices, and a bloody mary bar to boot. Once we were all fueled up, it was time to head over to the links for a tee time.

Golf at Gleneagles remains a top draw for avid golfers hailing from around the world. In our case, my dad and sister were keen to experience The Queen’s Course–considered one of the more approachable of the three at Glen–and I was thrilled to be their cheerleader. Had I wanted to try and get up to speed, I could have tried my hand at the Wee Course (a small 9-hole course consisting mainly of Par 3’s), I opted to stay where my talent is on par: with a camera in hand. As recent host to The Ryder and Solheim Cups, Gleneagles’ reputation as a sportsman’s (or woman’s!) paradise is well earned. Alternative to the par-68 Queen’s Course , are the King’s Course , a Braid-designed masterpiece, and the Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course .

For those like myself who aren’t suited to be on the golf course, there is no shortage of activities on the pursuits menu. One of the most enchanting parts of a stay at Gleneagles is that their team thinks outside of the box when it comes to designing activities. In collaboration with Yuri, Head of Adventure , guests can experience a specially curated outing. In our case, this was a hike that culminated in the most magical pondside picnic in a glass dome–but I’m getting ahead of myself. To kick off this immersion the Scottish countryside of our ancestral origin, we left the property for a brief drive where we set out on a refreshing walk along the ridge. This was the moment where it all coalesced: the sun even endeavored to peek through the sky as we walked alongside Yuri, soaking up stories of his nearly two decades spent being a safari guide and content creator across Africa before returning to his motherland of Scotland.

day trips from gleneagles scotland

Once we were back on property, we had a refreshing swim down at the pool. In between conversations recapping how memorable our afternoon was, we put on our finery for a dinner back at “ The Strath ” as the esteemed outlet is lovingly called by the Gleneagles team. While the setting is steeped in tradition, it doesn’t take long to realize that the upscale venue isn’t stuck in the past: during our first course, the pianist launched into a rendition of “Toxic” as boisterous incentive group tables declared multiple rounds of “cheers” celebrating their successes. An evening here is split into three courses, a much-abbreviated experience from the nearby two-Michelin-starred Andre Fairlie which serves a far more intense series of courses during its limited covers each evening. For a nightcap, a dip into American Bar was inevitable.

For our last full day at Gleneagles, we opted for one final dive into what the team does here best: activities. Following breakfast, we meandered to the Falconry School for an introduction to the ancient sport with the help of the affable Keenan, a Falconry Instructor who’s been on property for several years. While the entire team within the adventure department demonstrates a connection to the work they do, it was Keenan’s passion for his role–both with the gundogs and the extensive collection of birds–that made our time so special. He walked us through a Gundog course before introducing us to the zaniest of their bunch of thirteen highly-trained dogs, Callie. She zipped around us at such lightning speed that none of us could help but burst into full-belly laughs, the kind that reminds you what going on vacation is meant to do: spark joy through the simple moments.

day trips from gleneagles scotland

For lunch, we meandered back to The Garden Cafe, a more casual eatery on property offering salads, freshly baked sweet treats, and a variety of caffeinated beverages. In the words of Georgios, Head of Coffee, “My favorite coffee is coffee made well.” That ethos is very much embodied with each cup served here, whether you order an Italian espresso or Costa Rican-farmed cold brew. Our mid-day meal fueled us up for our final adventure of the day which began just a short drive away at the Shooting and Fishing School . As the daughter of a hunter who’s never partook in her life, I was skeptical about how much I’d enjoy the lesson, but the second we got set up with our instructor, John, I was put at ease. We shot clay pigeons before transitioning over to some archery to round out the afternoon with a friendly family competition. Spoiler: my dad won.

day trips from gleneagles scotland

Dinner on our final evening had us weaving back over to the golf course. We check in for our reservation at The Dormy , overlooking the King’s and Queen’s championship courses. Between shared servings of delicious Indian curries and crispy tandoori breads, we went around the table to recant some of our personal highlights of the trip. For me, it was our hike and surprise-filled picnic with Ashley, our partner at Gleneagles who makes all the magic happen for SmartFlyer clients. For my sister, the highlight was her round of golf on such an esteemed course. For my dad, the highlight was simply our time together as a family, making lifelong memories.

We arose on our final morning in Scotland to a twinge of melancholy that we were set to depart from Scotland. Knowing we had a spa treatment on the books directly after our room service breakfast was delivered softened the blow. The Resident Spa offers guests a restorative space for relaxation and rejuvenation. Opt for a Highland Healer massage or perhaps a facial featuring either Tata Harper or Dr. Barbara Sturm products. If like us, you want to claim a piece of Gleneagles to enjoy back at home, swing through The Retail Arcade to peruse artisanal offerings, including everything down to the jam served on property. Depart the property knowing that it isn’t goodbye, but certainly a “see you soon.”

12 Brilliant Day Trips From Glasgow For A Dreamy Escape

Walk the fells, chase waterfalls and learn about the history of Scotland — all on a day trip from Glasgow!

Katherine Notman

Glasgow is a beautiful city but sometimes it’s nice to escape the crowds of people and see the beautiful spots on Glasgow’s doorstep. You don’t have to drive for long to have a nice day out near the city and these day trips prove it.

1. Campsie Fells

View this post on Instagram

Less than a 40 minutes drive from central Glasgow, you can escape to the beautiful hills of Campsie Fells . Walk for miles amidst this picturesque landscape and see something different at every turn, including the spooky Lennox Castle Hospital , an abandoned mental hospital. Many visitors also choose to stop in at the Glengoyne Distillery and sample some delicious whisky on one of their distillery tours.

The village of Campsie Glen sits nestled between the fells and there you can visit the Shrine of Schoenstatt , which is fabled to be “a connecting point between Heaven and earth” . The village is full of old buildings and there are woodlands surrounding it that are perfect for a peaceful walk.

2. Finnech Glen

You should definitely visit Finnech Glen , also known as Devil’s Pulpit , but exercise caution when descending the slippery stairs, named Jacob’s Ladder or the Devil’s Steps . Once you reach the bottom, you can walk through a stream with an amazing ruby red base. Its colour comes from the red sandstone that has been worn away by the water to form the glen. You’ll find this breathtaking spot just 30 minutes north of Glasgow by car.

3. Isle of Arran

The Isle of Arran is an absolute gem . People go on their holidays here so, if you’re going for the day, there are loads of options for things to do. First things first — there’s a whisky distillery and a cheese producer here, both of which you can visit. Then you can relax on the beautiful Brodick Bay , visit the Isle of Arran Heritage Museum , or spend some time exploring Brodick Castle .

4. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

The impressive Loch Lomond runs through the beautiful Trossochs National Park , which is speckled with beautiful hills and waterfalls to explore. It would be near impossible to explore the whole area in a day but you can take a cruise boat along the loch to get a sense of the place.

There are loads of tiny islands on the loch. Visit Inchcailloch where you can sit in seclusion with the wildlife and the loch surrounding you. Inchacailloch means ‘island of the old or cowled woman’ and it’s supposedly where St. Kentigerna , an Irish missionary, lived and died.

If you’re after more of a walk , you can venture out around Loch Lomond’s shores to find Rob Roy’s Cave , and if you’re in for a bit more of a challenge, you can climb Ben Lomond and back. Ben Lomond takes between four and five hours depending on your fitness level, so it’s the perfect day trip.

5. Loup of Fintry

Loup of Fintry is a stunning waterfall , only a 45 minute drive from Glasgow. You can bring a picnic and sit on the grass, whilst listening to the roar of the water rushing over the rocks. It’s the ideal serene mini getaway we’ve all ben hoping for.

6. Stirling

Stirling Castle might just be one of the most beautiful day trips in Scotland. Perched atop a volcanic hill, just 40 minutes outside of Glasgow, there are plenty of things to see and do within the castle walls. The castle offers an opportunity to learn about the history of Scottish royalty and the military history of Scotland. The onsite Unicorn Cafe also serves refreshments. You don’t have to book in advance but if you’ve travelled from Glasgow then it’s advisable to do so. You can buy tickets in advance online and adult tickets are £16.50 .

If you’re in Falkirk then you simply have to see The Kelpies . These huge steel sculptures of two horse’s heads tower 30 metres above the ground, and they represent the murderous shape-shifting mythical creatures that would appear to humans in the shape of a horse. Once the human rode it, the victims would be then drowned by these beings. As you’re exploring this iconic monument, there’s also a gift shop and some cafes, so you can sit and relax on your day out.

What is more, make your wee day out into a fun cycling adventure to the Falkirk Wheel, which is simply fascinating. It lifts boats that sit on tons of water into the air and transports them, providing a terrific transport route to Glasgow. You can also find our guide to local cycling routes for day trips here .

8. Arrochar, Argyll and Bute

On top of making the UK’s Best Hidden Gems list last year, the quaint village of Arrochar is a place for stunning vistas, challenging walks and memorable day trips. With Ben Lomond gracing the village on the one side, and the rocky summit of The Cobbler within the Arrochar Alps on the other, Arrochar sits at the banks of the lakes making it the perfect place to relax after a long day of adventuring.

If you want to actually brave The Cobbler , the path is around 11km and should take four to six hours . Make a start on the opposite side of the road of the Succoth car park and follow the (barely marked) red way markers. The path could prove more difficult at times to less experienced hikers, and once you reached the summit (unless you’re a rock climber), come back down the same way you came up.

9. The Secret Scottish Pyramid

the secret scottish pyramid

That’s right, Scotland has a pyramid, and it has nothing to do with Ancient Egypt. Instead, it has a regal history that dates back to Queen Victoria. The Secret Scottish Pyramid , also known as Prince Albert’s Cairn, sits in the cosy woodland of Cairngorms National Park in the North East of Scotland, not too far from the Royal Balmoral Estate . Located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Glasgow, the woodland walk on the Balmoral Estate offers one of the more unique day trips , with views of the Balmoral Castle and a stunning view over the national park once you reach Prince Albert’s Cairn. As usual for Scottish terrain, bring your hiking boots as there might be muddy patches along the way.

10. Dunkeld

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fergus King | Scotland (@fergus.king_of_scotland)

Located around an hour and 15 minutes from Glasgow, Dunkeld was also named the best place to live in Scotland by The Sunday Times in 2023, so it’s not just one of the best day trips . Dunkeld is located in Perthshire , around one hour and 15 minutes drive from Glasgow. The village is a favourite for pretty village enthusiasts and boasts refreshing nature walks , calming scenery and a charismatic, friendly aura within the village. There are plenty of local businesses to check out, such as The Great British Bake-Off star Flora Shedden’s Aran Bakery , The Taybank and The Birnam Arts Institute .

11. The Japanese Garden at Cowden

the japanese garden at cowden

What if we told you you could travel to the Far East by just driving an hour from the city? Well, when it comes to day trips near Glasgow , feeling like you left the country without going far offers a special allure. The Japanese Garden at Cowden is also named “Sha Raku En”, meaning “a place of pleasure and delight”, and is located just 50 minutes from Glasgow. Founded by Ella Christie , the spot aims to merge the two cultures, bringing a welcome union of Japanese and Scottish flairs. While guests have to pay £8.50 to get into the garden, there is also a tearoom to unwind and enjoy the day.

12. North Berwick

day trips from gleneagles scotland

North Berwick is a quaint little seaside town on the East Coast two hours from Glasgow, centring around two beaches . Its picturesque location offers plenty of walking opportunities, as well as independent businesses and cute wee pubs worthy of checking out. What is more, North Berwick was named the best place to live in the UK by The Sunday Times in 2024, recognising its appeal and quality of life.

The 8 best day trips from Glasgow for lochs, islands, and highlands

Feb 6, 2022 • 5 min read

With  Glasgow’s renowned nightlife and music scene, its ever-growing culinary reputation, expansive parks and revered museums, you can have a ball without ever venturing outside the city limits. But thanks to its geographical position, Glasgow is the perfect base from which to enjoy Scotland’s raw nature and dramatic scenery.

To the north, south, east or west, here are eight of the best day-trip destinations from Glasgow.

See renowned L och Lomond and the charming village of Luss

One of the country’s most treasured spots, Loch Lomond and its surrounds offer beauty by the beach, on the water, and way up high. Whether you choose to go for a stroll on the shore at charming Luss village, paddle a kayak to one of the loch’s many islands from lush Balmaha , or conquer your first Munro in 974m (3195ft)   Ben Lomond , this national park offers postcard-perfect sights from almost every angle.

How to get to there from Glasgow

It's best to take the car; it’s a 35-minute drive from Glasgow. Public transport is available, with a train station at Balloch on the loch’s southern edge.

Get a dose of Scottish history at Stirling Castle

Often overlooked for its more widely-known neighbor in Scotland’s capital, Stirling Castle is just as grand, if not more so, than its Edinburgh counterpart. Perched atop a volcanic rock, the castle is as dramatic as it is historic. Overlooking the famous battlegrounds of Bannockburn and Stirling Bridge, Stirling Castle has played vital roles in the stories of William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Robert the Bruce.

How to get to there from Glasgow

Stirling is just a 31-minute train ride from Queen Street station, or a 40-minute drive from Glasgow city center.

Enjoy the best of Scotland's raw nature in the Perthshire Highlands

There are few better places to witness Scotland’s spectacular countryside than in Pitlochry and the surrounding Perthshire Highlands . Queen’s View offers the perfect platform from which to make the most of the area’s raw nature, with the Schiehallion mountain a beautiful backdrop to the awesome sight of Loch Tummel below. The similarly stunning Faskally Wood breeds an atmosphere of adventure, while Blair Athol and Edradour distilleries  — the latter of which is the smallest in Scotland — is where visitors warm up with a wee dram of Scotland’s national drink.

Pitlochry and the surrounding countryside is best explored by car, with the town a 1 hour 40 minute drive from Glasgow.

Taste spectacular seafood in Oban

The gateway to the idyllic Hebridean Islands , this quaint harbor town offers picturesque views across the bay to Kerrera and Mull from the excellent vantage point at McCaig’s Tower , the intriguing and unmissable structure modeled on Rome’s Colosseum. For fans of lobster, mussels, and scallops, the call of award-winning seafood would be worth the trip alone. On your drive from Glasgow, consider stops by Castle Stalker (as featured in the 1975 film  Monty Python and the Holy Grail ) and the similarly impressive Kilchurn Castle on the often unheralded Loch Awe.

While there are trains from Glasgow to Oban, taking a car is quicker (2.5 hours) and allows you to visit many of fantastic sights on the way.

A hiker stands on a mountain summit looking out over a valley

Spend a day on the scenic Isle of Arran

Lovingly described as "Scotland in miniature", for years Arran has proved a west coast sanctuary for Glaswegians keen to escape the city. For the adventurous, a climb up Goat Fell (the origin of the name still remains unclear) is a must, while a more relaxing outing may have you wind down at the excellent whisky distillery . A trip to King’s Cave  (of Robert the Bruce fame) and Brodick Castle will give a great insight into the island’s vast history.

Take the train from Glasgow Central station to Ardrossan Harbour (approx 45 minutes), from where ferries to Brodick (55 minutes) run at least five times daily.

Tour the sights of Edinburgh, Glasgow's fierce rival

Although Glaswegians steadfastly refute suggestions Edinburgh is the better city, they won’t begrudge visitors taking a trip to the capital to admire its awe-inspiring sights. The contrasts between these two neighbors are stark in terms of looks, feel and the locals. A day in Edinburgh would be best enjoyed exploring the castle , trekking up to Arthur’s Seat , and ambling down the Royal Mile in the Old Town . You’ll love it: just don’t harp on about it too much when you return to Glasgow.

Trains runs as often as every 15 minutes from Queen Street Station to Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket, taking between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes.

Learn about Scotland's great poet, Robert Burns, on the Ayrshire coast

The birthplace of Auld Lang Syne, the Scots song sung around the world every New Year’s Eve, Ayrshire is the home of its creator and Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Immerse yourself in the words and stories of the bard at the Burns Birthplace Museum and Burns Cottage . Drive a little further down the coast and stop by regal Culzean Castle and take in nearby views of iconic island Ailsa Craig.

The Burns Museum can be reached by car in 45 minutes from Glasgow. Public transport options are available, involving taking the train and a local bus.

Cycle around the island of Great Cumbrae

Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Largs, the population of this small west coast island balloons when summer arrives, as families descend upon Great Cumbrae to experience its old-world holiday feel. A leisurely 10-mile trip on two wheels around the "island of 1000 bicycles" is almost mandatory, as is a stroll along the promenade with a classic Scottish fish supper. Great Cumbrae is also the home of Britain’s smallest cathedral .

Largs, where the ferry departs from the mainland, is easily accessible by train (1 hour) from Glasgow Central station. Ferries run approximately every half-hour, more frequently in summertime.

Top 5 Day Trips from Stirling, Scotland

Top 5 Day Trips from Stirling, Scotland

Stirling is a great starting point for a road trip adventure in Scotland . That is why we started here after traveling north from Wales . Stirling is the gateway to Loch Lomond, the highlands and the Scottish coast isn’t too far either. Stirling, Scotland has plenty of history and sites to enjoy before heading out of the city. However, it is a small town and after you visit Stirling Castle, the Old Town Jail, and the William Wallace Monument you may want to take a day trip from the city. Here are my top 5 day trips from Stirling, Scotland.

Scotland Road Trip - Doune

Gateway to the Highlands

Stirling is known as the gateway to the highlands due to its prime location between the highlands and the lowlands. It is also conveniently positioned near Edinburgh and Glasgow. None of these would be a bad hub to explore Scotland but the size of Stirling makes it easy to get out of the city with minimal traffic and exploring a new destination by late morning. We made a few day trips from Stirling during our time there with a focus on history, whisky, and Scottish landscapes.

Blackness Castle

Blackness Castle was on my must-see list due to its prime location on the coast and accessibility and an easy day trip from Stirling. It is a 15th-century fortress near the village of Blackness and only 35-45 minute drive from Stirling depending on traffic. It doesn’t open until 10 am during the week but you can get very close on the beach or nearby park if you arrive early as we did.

Scotland Road Trip - Castle Blackness

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs

One could easily spend a week or more exploring Loch Lomond and the Trossachs . However, if you are short on time you can still plan a day trip from Stirling. I recommend taking an off-road excursion with 4×4 Adventure Scotland . They have an awesome fleet of Land Rover Defenders and have access to private roads most people never have the chance to see. They will even let you drive if you want to get behind the wheel. This was a highlight for me during my time around Loch Lomond.

Scotland Road Trip- Highlands

Deanston Distillery & Doune Castle

Deanston Distillery is an impressive spot for whisky tasting and one of the closest distilleries from Stirling. Tours are available but you can always walk in and pay for a whisky tasting at any times. Doune Castle is great to combine with Deanston since they are only minutes apart. Doune Castle is well known from appearances in Monty Python and more recently, Game of Thrones, but this also means there will be more crowds. It is worth a stop if you are nearby but I prefer the castles without the crowds. Both of these places can be reached in under 30 minutes and won’t take you more than a few hours to enjoy them both. You don’t need to make a full day trip from Stirling to see these two sites, which allows you more time to explore your home base of Stirling.

Scotland Road Trip - Doune

Gleneagles hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup and is also a world-class hotel. It is home to multiple golf courses, a par 3 course, and a pitch and putt. Even if you aren’t a golfer you can enjoy lunch at the clubhouse or even hop on the pitch and putt for a few holes (no tee time needed for pitch and putt).  Gleneagles is around 30 minutes north of Stirling and will get you home in time to explore Stirling by early afternoon.

Scotland Road Trip - Gleneagles

Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker is a long drive from Stirling but it was my favorite day from my Scotland trip. We woke up to snow in Stirling and did not have an easy drive northwest to the coast. Without much traffic, this is a two-hour drive each way from Stirling. However, the sight of the castle was worth it all. We made it to Castle Stalker before lunch and there wasn’t a single person on the beach. It sits out on an island away from all the crowds you will see at Doune or other popular castles. There are visiting hours if you’d like to see inside but I was happily enjoying it from the beach.

Scotland Road Trip- Castle Stalker

Day Trips from Stirling

There are endless sights within a short drive of Stirling which is why I loved having a home base there to explore the region. Other options nearby include falconry, additional golf courses, and of course, more castles. I chose my top 5 day trips from Stirling based on distance and the desire to see castles on the coast and get a taste of Scotland.

“It’s a good alternative to southern Europe, where it’s getting so hot,” says Kasper Egelund, CEO of design brand Vipp , which opened a guesthouse near the town of Klitmøller in northern Denmark, dubbed Cold Hawaii.

Checking into this slick guesthouse is a steady stream of U.S. travelers drawn to the wind-swept, sandy beaches, surprisingly good surf spots, and of course, the cooler temperatures, which rarely get above 70 degrees.

day trips from gleneagles scotland

“It’s snowballing for sure,” says Egelund.

Further south, an hour outside Copenhagen in Zealand, there’s a stretch of coastline known as the Danish Riviera, with many Copenhagers have summer homes. Recently, the local tourism board has seen an uptick in visitors, some of whom are visiting for the day while others are staying overnight checking into breezy seaside hotels such as Helenekilde.

In Scotland —a country that is often considered an unpredictable summertime destination because of its changeable weather—visitors can’t get enough of the rolling green hills and cooler waters.

One activity that’s gaining popularity is boating, where the brand charters a boat around the Scottish Isles. Away From the Ordinary, which launched in 2018, has doubled its May bookings since last year. It’s also expanded its client base with guests streaming in from southern California, Florida, and Texas, escaping the heat back home.

A dining room at Gleneagles Hotel and Spa

“We’re definitely seeing an uptick in bookings with clients from hotter states,” says O’Hara, adding that the summer season, which previously tapered out in early September, has extended. “People are now fully booked in the second half of September.”

Hotels, too. Gleneagles Hotel and Spa , a resort set in an historic castle an hour from Edinburgh, has always been a popular summer hot spot for travelers, but it’s now receiving a more diverse group.

“We’ve had many American families with longstanding traditions of summering in Southern Europe now selecting Scotland as their annual destination” says Conor O’Leary, managing director. With an array of activities such as falconry, horseback riding, golf, tennis, and picnics in the country, there is certainly no shortage of outdoorsy things to do. Even if there is the odd rainfall, travelers don’t seem to groan about it like they might have done in the past.

“People are so happy to see the green and rain,” says O’Hara.

If you’re still not quite ready to trade in pasta for fish and chips, Northern Italy has also become the destination du jour. For summer 2024, travel agency Smart Flyer has seen an increase in trips planned to cooler parts of Italy.

“Lake Como, the Dolomites, and Lake Garda are some of the most requested destinations,” says Erina Pindar, COO and managing partner of travel agency SmartFlyer.

At Forestis , a Scandi-style ski-in-ski out property overlooking the South Tyrolean Alps in the Dolomites, they too have seen an influx of U.S. travelers. The property is geared toward winter adventurers, but it’s also an ideal summer destination, with a glimmering swimming pool and lawn dotted with sun beds, as well as outdoor activities such as hiking and biking.

Forestis

“We’ve welcomed guests who have had to cancel trips to other southern regions for various reasons, who then turn to the Dolomites as an alternative,” says Teresa Unterthiner, owner of Forestis. While the Dolomites is certainly increasing in interest ahead of the Olympics, Unterthiner also links this newfound enthusiasm to people seeking cooler locations: “We believe it could also be tied to climate-adaptive focused trips.”

The heat waves and dire warming ocean situation have also spurred a trend in polar travel. Icy places that previously seemed unimaginable as summertime destinations are suddenly quenching travelers’ thirsts.

Will Bolsover, CEO and founder of Natural World Safaris , which operates trips in places like Svalbard, has seen a 20 percent increase in polar travel from April through August in the past two to three years. Cruising on a boat past ice caps is definitely the polar opposite to sitting on a beach in Greece. While it’s certainly cooler, it also has the potential to be transformative, and Bolsover argues we should go to the Arctic now while we still can.

“You can go to Italy any time in your life,” says Bolsover. “[The Arctic] is a corner of our planet where wild things roam offering a truly unique and life-changing experience.”

Also, a guarantee that you won’t need bottles of water on-hand to pour over your head.

Just another short bus journey away is Doune, home to Argaty Red Kites . This is Scotland’s only red kite feeding station where the RSPB and Scottish Natural Heritage have reintroduced the red kite. You’ll get the chance to watch these spectacular birds in flight. History is also on the agenda where Doune Castle plays a starring role in the hit TV series Outlander as the well-known fictional Castle Leoch. The castle is currently undergoing work with restrictions in some areas, but you can still explore the magnificent 14th century courtyard and greats halls.
