A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages.

We got an early look at Carnival’s first new ship in nearly two years

Gene Sloan

This is a heady week for cruise fans on the West Coast.

In a rare development, the region is becoming the year-round home to the newest, snazziest vessel from cruise giant Carnival , the world's biggest cruise line by number of ships.

Christened on Wednesday in the Los Angeles area by Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White, the 4,008-passenger Carnival Panorama is the first new Carnival ship to be based on the West Coast in two decades. It'll sail weekly to the Mexican Riviera out the Port of Long Beach through at least 2021.

Typically, big North American cruise lines such as Carnival initially base their newest ships at the giant cruise hubs on the East Coast — Miami , for instance, or Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades. The West Coast traditionally has drawn older vessels. But things are changing.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Carnival Panorama's deployment comes as Norwegian Cruise Line's second-newest ship, the two-year-old Norwegian Joy, begins sailing to Mexico out of the Los Angeles area, too. That said, Norwegian Joy only will remain in the city for a few months during the winter before moving to Seattle to sail to Alaska.

But with the Carnival Panorama's year-round deployment to the Los Angeles area, cruise fans on the West Coast now will be able to experience one of the cruise world's latest and greatest vessels at any time of the year, without getting on a cross-country flight.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

For Carnival regulars, Carnival Panorama will look familiar. As I saw during a short "shakedown" cruise over the weekend in advance of its first regular week-long sailing, Carnival Panorama has roughly the same footprint as the line's last two vessels: Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista. All three of the ships are part of the same Vista Class-series that began rolling out in 2016.

Still, Carnival Panorama has a few new twists, including the first Sky Zone trampoline park on a cruise ship and Carnival's first onboard cooking classroom. Here's what to expect if you book a voyage.

Related: How to plan a cruise with points and miles

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The first Sky Zone at sea

Yes, you now can add a trampoline park to the list of things you can find on a Carnival ship. Filling a two-deck-high interior space in the middle of the vessel, Carnival Panorama's Sky Zone is an at-sea version of the 200-plus Sky Zone parks found across the United States, Canada, Mexico and nine other countries.

Located near the ship's tween- and teen-clubrooms, it has two padded trampoline areas where you can jump around, and also take part in games like jousting on a balance beam or shooting baskets while bouncing. There's even trampoline dodgeball and, on one end of the room, a climbing wall augmented with interactive game elements.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

On first sight, I was a little underwhelmed by the space, which is relatively modest in size at about 3,000 square feet. But after tumbling around a bit during a test session with other cruise writers, I was sold . This place is a hoot, in large part because it offers all sorts of interactive silliness like a tug-of-war game where the loser goes flying into a big padded cushion (as I learned the hard way in a faceoff with the guy from CruiseRadio.net ; I did beat the writer from CruiseCritic.com ).

Of course, I'm not the target market for this. Sky Zone clearly is a feature aimed at kids, including the littlest ones. Some of the bouncy attractions aren't super hard core, and that's the point. You can have a wonderful afternoon here playing around with your four-year-old, who will absolutely love it.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

In a nod to the youngest Carnival cruisers, Sky Zone offers one-hour "toddler time" sessions exclusively for children ages six months to 5 years, accompanied by an adult. The fee is $5 per child and $5 per adult. There also are exclusive sessions for children ages six to 14, as well as passengers 15 and older. The latter two sessions are priced at $12 per person, including a pair of Sky Zone socks.

If jumping with the lights on is too ho-hum for you, the space also hosts nighttime, all-ages "blacklight glow parties" where you wear a custom glowing T-shirt as you bounce around. (These sessions cost $18, including the shirt, which you can keep.)

Carnival regulars, take note: The trampoline park fills the space that houses the Imax Theatre on Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista. So, no Imax film-watching on this ship.

A familiar array of deck-top attractions

Sky Zone isn't the only kid-friendly play area on Carnival Panorama. As is typical for Carnival ships, the top decks of the vessel are covered in family-focused attractions including one of the WaterWorks waterparks that are now standard on Carnival vessels and one of the line's signature SportSquare areas.

The WaterWorks waterpark plays to the family market with two massive waterslides called Kaleido-o-Slide and Twister, and a kiddie splash zone dominated by a 300-gallon dump bucket known as the PowerDrencher. While not quite as over-the-top as the recently unveiled Blaster waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas (now the longest waterslide on a cruise ship), the 455-foot-long Kaleido-o-Slide definitely ranks among the top waterslides at sea .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Like the WaterWorks area, the SportSquare on Carnival Panorama will be familiar to Carnival aficionados. It's home to a suspended-in-the-air, pedal-powered SkyRide (something that first debuted in 2016 on Carnival Vista and is now on three ships), a suspended-in-the-air ropes course, a basketball court, miniature golf, miniature bowling, ping pong tables and other outdoor games.

The top decks of Carnival Panorama also have two pool areas and an adults-only Serenity retreat area with padded loungers, day beds, hot tubs and a full bar. In short, there's a ton to do up top and, unlike on some lines, it's all open to passengers at no extra charge. Carnival has (thankfully, in my opinion) resisted the trend of big-ship operators carving out whole sections of deck-top areas for the exclusive use of passengers staying in suites or willing to pay hefty access fees.

Lively, engaging entertainment

If you've booked Carnival Panorama for a quiet getaway, you've made a terrible mistake. There's nothing quiet about this ship, as is the Carnival way. The overall vibe is "loud and lively," with an interior area that revolves around a bustling bar zone and casino; live musicians seemingly playing around every corner; and lots of interactive (and noisy) activities.

Audience participation is a big part of the Carnival shtick, and silliness reigns. On my short shakedown cruise , the lounge entertainment included such audience-engaging inanity as an embarrass-your-wife-on-stage "Love and Marriage Show" and often hilarious karaoke sessions.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Up by the pool, the interactive hijinks got even wilder with prime sunning hours interrupted by such larks as a raucous poolside dance-a-thon and a hairy chest contest. Yes, Carnival is that line. Both drew standing-room-only, hooting-and-hollering crowds.

This is all par for the course at Carnival. If the above sounds like your worst cruising nightmare, Carnival is not the line for you . On the flipside, many vacationers love this, and it isn't by accident that Carnival now carries one out of every five cruisers worldwide.

Of note, Carnival Panorama's main theater, the 930-seat Liquid Lounge, houses two new-for-Carnival production shows, Broadway Beats and Rock Revolution. Both are old school cruise ship shows involving a dozen or more performers dancing around to a continuous blast of ever-changing tunes, with no storyline to speak of. They're a far cry from the more sophisticated production shows rolling out in recent years in main showrooms on Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean ships .

Carnival's first cooking classroom

The cooking-class craze that began taking off a few years ago on high-end ships finally has spread to the most mass-market of lines – and in no small way.

Located on Deck 4 not far from Carnival Panorama's main restaurants, Carnival's first-ever cooking classroom, dubbed Carnival Kitchen, is a seriously tricked out venue complete with nine state-of-the-art, marbled granite cooking stations for two and a dedicated dining area.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The space will be home to more than a dozen distinct classes where you can learn to make such classic Carnival dishes as a warm chocolate melting cake. There also will be courses in sushi rolling, pizza making and pie baking. Classes will last one to two hours and cost $30 to $59 per person.

I got to sit in on the very first class to be held in the room, a lesson in apple pie making, and even helped with a little stirring. I found the instruction simple enough, so even the most cooking-challenged traveler can keep up. The flipside is that serious amateur chefs may find it a bit basic (usually the case with cruise ship cooking classrooms).

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The new Carnival Kitchen's dining area will be used in the evenings for demonstration classes that include a themed dinner. This effectively gives Carnival Panorama one more restaurant than exists on the other ships in the Vista Class — and a very exclusive and intimate one at that. As with regular classes during the day, the evening class-and-dinner experience will be limited to 18 people at a time.

Signature Carnival restaurants

Other than the addition of Carnival Kitchen, the array of dining options on Carnival Panorama is identical to what's found on the line's last new ship, Carnival Horizon.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

That includes two large main restaurants and a casual buffet that are included in the fare, as well as versions of Carnival's signature extra-charge steakhouse, Fahrenheit 555, and Italian-serving Cucina del Capitano (if you're a Carnival fan, you know this as the place where waiters sing and dance between courses). The latter two venues have flat fees of $38 and $15 per person, respectively.

The ship also has one of Carnival's a la carte Bonsai sushi restaurants (now on 10 ships) and the line's fourth Ji Ji Asian Kitchen ($15 per person). Other extra-charge locations include two venues that are only making their second appearance on Carnival ships: Bonsai Teppanyaki (priced at a flat $32 per person) and the a la carte Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, a venue created in partnership with The Food Network's Guy Fieri. Both outlets debuted in 2018 on Carnival Horizon.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes Carnival's house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber, not just for the Pig & Anchor but for several other drinking venues around the ship.

The quality of the food (and drink) on Carnival ships always surprises me, given the budget pricing of the brand, and Carnival Panorama is no exception. Despite being one of the industry's lowest-cost operators, Carnival manages to pull off one of the best steakhouses at sea in Fahrenheit 555, and even the no-extra-charge main restaurants get the basics right.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Carnival ships, including Carnival Panorama, also have what may be the two best quick-serve poolside dining venues at sea: The BlueIguana Cantina and Guy's Burger Joint. BlueIguana is a Carnival knock-off of Chipotle with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. Why can't other cruise lines get this sort of stuff right?

A crowded ship

As is typical for Carnival ships, Carnival Panorama has a bit of a cramped feel — at least compared to other big new ships operated by the likes of Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.

Carnival has packed 2,004 cabins onto the vessel, which measures about 133,500 gross register tons (a measurement of interior space). That's 37 more cabins than the first vessel in the Vista Class series and far more cabins per gross register ton than you'll see on other big new vessels such as Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore and Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Indeed, the "space ratio" of Carnival Panorama (a measure of the amount of interior space available per passenger) only is around 33. The space ratio of Norwegian Encore, by contrast, is around 42. The space ratio of Symphony of the Seas is around 41.

One of the ways Carnival keeps its prices low (and they truly are low; Carnival is a top choice for budget-conscious cruisers) is by jamming a lot of people on its ships. So, at one level, it's hard to complain about this. But I definitely noticed the crowds on the shakedown sailing.

Bottom line

With its straight-out-of-the-shipyard newness, wide array of fun-focused deck-top attractions and many interior restaurants, bars and showrooms, Carnival Panorama is the new ship-to-beat in the year-round cruise market in Southern California — at least for those who like big, bustling megaships .

While a few other relatively new megaships (such as Norwegian Joy) make an appearance in the area each year, they typically only stay for a few weeks or months while on their way to other destinations such as Alaska .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

That said, Carnival Panorama still is a Carnival ship. If you haven't liked Carnival vessels in the past, you're not going to suddenly fall in love with this one, even if you're a West Coaster looking for something new and snazzy out of the Los Angeles area.

The self-described "Fun Ship" line has a huge following, but it's not for everyone. This is a line that is all about fun in a very brash way, with entertainment that at times is as low brow as the line is low-cost.

What it costs

In general, Carnival ships are among the most affordable at sea , and Carnival Panorama is no exception. The vessel will be operating seven-night voyages to the Mexican Riviera out of Long Beach that start at $474 per person, not including taxes and fees of $116.64. That works out to just $84 per night per person with taxes and fees for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals.

Carnival Panorama also will operate a single six-night sailing and a single eight-night sailing to Mexico out of Long Beach over the 2021 holiday period that start at $609 and $1,039 per person, respectively.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Keep in mind that, as is typical for cruises, the starting fares above are "based on double occupancy," which means pricing is based on two people staying in a cabin, each paying their own fare. A single traveler occupying a cabin will pay more.

The fares above also are for the least-expensive, windowless "interior" cabins. There are quite a few cabin categories on Carnival ships, including bigger balcony cabins and suites, at a range of price points. In addition, pricing for cruises fluctuates week-by-week depending on demand, just as it does with flights. The lowest fares are available during off-season months such as September. You'll pay more for more popular times of the year.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Fares also don't include extra charges you ring up on board. While meals at several onboard restaurants are included in the fare, some higher-end venues on Carnival Panorama come with an extra charge. Just like at most land resorts, you'll also pay extra for drinks. Most beers at Carnival Panorama bars run from $6.25 to $6.75, while wine starts at $8 per glass ($28 for the least expensive bottle).

One other thing for which you'll need to budget is the automatic gratuity charge that Carnival adds to bills, which runs $13.99 per person, per day for most cabins. Suite passengers pay more.

(Editor's note: TPG always tries to pay full price for travel its staff takes and usually doesn't inform companies in advance of our plans to review. But there are times when — especially with cruise lines — we need to work with travel providers to gain early access to products before they go into regular service. To attend this three-night "shakedown" sailing of Carnival Panorama, which came in advance of the ship beginning its regular weekly schedule of seven-night trips, TPG paid a negotiated $199 rate to be on board. This is roughly in line with the starting rates of the ship on a per person, per day basis. TPG also paid all costs to get to and from the vessel.)

After 3 sailings on Carnival's Panorama, I'm convinced there's no better cruise at a cheaper price

  • A friend and I recently sailed on Carnival Panorama, one of my favorite ships for its overall value.
  • We each spent $437 for our own interior cabins, including food, on a 7-night sailing to Mexico.
  • The Panorama is packed with free activities and is a good, cheap option for solo cruisers.

I've sailed on the Carnival Panorama three times, with my spouse and also with friends. I think it's the best cruise ship for anyone on a budget, or who wants their own cabin.

cruises carnival panorama

I'm a frequent cruiser and have stayed in a variety of cabin styles over the years, from mini-suites all the way to interior rooms on the lower decks. I've done so on many ships on cruise lines including Carnival, Holland America, Norwegian, and Princess.

But I keep going back to the Carnival Panorama .

I've sailed on Panorama twice with my spouse, and we already have another sailing booked for later this year. Recently, I also traveled onboard with a friend, but opted to book my own solo cabin rather than share one.

While sharing a room and splitting the cost with another traveler is often the best way to save money on a cruise, I knew that wasn't the case with the Panorama as the prices are low enough to afford on my own, and Carnival doesn't charge a single supplement fee like most cruise lines do.

Here's why anyone looking to book a cruise on a budget or travel solo should only consider the Carnival Panorama.

I paid just $437 for my own interior cabin on a 7-night sailing to Mexico on the Carnival Panorama. That fare included accommodations, entertainment, meals, and basic drinks like water, juice, coffee, and tea.

cruises carnival panorama

Through my past cruises, I've come to find that the inside rooms offer just the right amount of space I need personally, while paying the lowest rate possible to meet my budget.

My friend and I each spent $304 before taxes on our own dedicated interior cabins. After taxes and port fees, the cruise rate was $437. We also prepaid gratuities for the week at a rate of $97.93.

Included in the fare was unlimited dining apart from specialty restaurants, all live entertainment, and activities like trivia, dance parties, waterslides, mini putt, and a ropes course. The rate did not include alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, or activities on port excursions.

We also added on the cost of a 2-day spa pass for $40 per person on this sailing, as we wanted to have access to thermal sauna suites and a large spa tub.

For this particular sailing, I booked my cabin seven weeks in advance, so it's quite possible to find great rates without too much advance planning.

Most importantly, I didn't have to pay a single supplement fee on Carnival.

cruises carnival panorama

Because my friend and I each wanted our own cabin, I was certain I'd have to pay extra for the solo supplement, which is standard on most cruise lines when someone chooses not to share a room.

This is because most cruise staterooms are meant to hold at least two people, and the single supplement helps the cruise line make up for lost revenue they could have made had there been a second person in the room, according to the LA Times .

But I've never had to pay such a fee on Carnival. In fact, had we shared one cabin, according to my research on Carnival's website, we would have only saved about $50 each for the week. And since we both loved the idea of having our own dedicated private spaces as adult travelers, we each booked our own room.

We each had our own spacious interior cabin that came with plenty of storage to maximize the space.

cruises carnival panorama

Both me and my friend booked standard interior cabins on the Carnival Panorama and our cabins were identical.

Each cabin was 185 square feet and meant for one traveler with a single bed. I thought this actually made the room appear much larger as it didn't have two beds like I'm used to in cruise ship staterooms. I never felt cramped.

In addition to a comfy bed, my room had a desk and chair, full closet, and a small fridge. There was also plenty of storage in the closet and a separate shelving unit so I was able to make the most of my space by putting my belongings away.

I also had a full bathroom with shelves for toiletries and a large stack of towels.

My friend's cabin was on the second floor, while mine was on the third. We could have paid more to be in a prime location closer to the pool deck, but with the elevators close to us and the pool parties just a quick lift away, I'm glad I opted to save the money.

Even though I didn't feel cramped in my room, I didn't spend much time in it as I was more interested in having fun outside, exploring the ship, playing games, or dancing at a deck party.

cruises carnival panorama

I had all the space I needed in my room, but other than naps or bedtime, I rarely spent time there. There was too much going on with planned activities and ship amenities for me to stay in the room.

One of our favorite morning activities was attending free trivia tournaments. We ended up making new friends each time and my friend even led our team to victory and is now the proud owner of a "ship on a stick" trophy and whale-tale medal.

There were more free activities offered than we could possibly do, from trivia to dance lessons, karaoke to mini putt.

Our ship also went to exciting ports that I'd expect to visit on a much pricier cruise.

cruises carnival panorama

Our cruise took place in late April and sailed to the Mexican Riviera, which is the route Panorama visits year-round from the Port of Long Beach, California. Our days would be filled with visits to sunny destinations including Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and Cabo San Lucas.

With this itinerary in mind, my friend and I thought $437 was an incredible deal for our individual cabins. I'm already plotting ahead to when I can do this sailing again as a solo traveler on my own.

To stay on budget, we focused on the ship's free dining and drinks.

cruises carnival panorama

I was a big fan of the incredible variety of dining included with our base cruise fare.

We had seven complimentary venues to choose from and we tried them all: Blue Iguana Cantina, the Lido Marketplace buffet, Pizzeria del Capitano, The Carnival Deli, The Captain's Pasta Bar, Guy Fieri's barbeque restaurant and his burger bar, and of course, the main dining room.

My near-daily favorite was Guy's Burger Joint. I especially loved being able to load my burger with as many or as little fixings as I pleased.

We also frequented Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse, which costs extra for dinner but offers free lunch on sea days.

cruises carnival panorama

Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse is an upcharge specialty restaurant from Guy Fieri by night, but for lunch on sea days, they offer a selection of barbeque favorites for free. The menu includes beef brisket, pulled pork, sausage, beans, potato salad, and mac n' cheese.

For the evening specialty upcharge options, the Smokehouse charges a la carte, so a guest could spend anywhere between $10 for finger foods to closer to $30 for apps and an entrée.

Our free lunch selection was a great way to sample Fieri faves for free as we could select as much or as little as we wanted, all plated by the Smokehouse crew.

We did splurge on one specialty restaurant, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, for surf and turf.

cruises carnival panorama

Panorama has a nice selection of specialty restaurants for an additional flat fee, like Bonsai Teppanyaki for $35 per person or classic Italian at Cucina del Capitano for $18 per person.

While we focused on complimentary dining throughout our cruise, near the end of our trip, we decided to have a special night out at Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. We indulged in surf and turf, an amazing wine selection, and unlimited appetizers and side dishes, and dessert. The steakhouse is $38 per person, and I think it's well worth the upcharge for the memorable food and service.

While I purchased drinks à la carte, my friend pre-purchased an unlimited drink package for $55 per day.

cruises carnival panorama

My friend pre-purchased Cheers! – the unlimited drink package – that was offered pre-boarding for $55 per day. That meant for the week she spent $385 to enjoy whatever drink she wanted day or night.

Since I drink more coffee than cocktails, I didn't get the package and instead paid a la carte. My favorite cocktail set me back $12, which wasn't too bad for a flavorful refreshment. For the week, I only purchased three alcoholic drinks, so I spent less than $50 for the occasional cocktail.

I also spent nearly $100 on specialty lattes, americanos, frappes, and mochas at Java Blue Café. I could have spent zero if I relied solely on the free coffee in the buffet, though.

I also thought our spa passes were well worth the extra $40 to enjoy the thermal pool and saunas.

cruises carnival panorama

While we aimed to maximize our fun onboard the ship and ashore, at other times, we also looked for quieter moments where we could recharge.

I thought Carnival's Cloud 9 Spa was a great place for that and a 2-day pass cost just $40 for unlimited use of the thermal pool and various sauna facilities.

Massages and spa treatments were also available and typically start at $105, but we found the saunas and hot tub to be what we needed for far cheaper. Plus, the pass allowed access day and night as many times as we wanted, so we would spa in the morning and in the evening after enjoying a day in port.

In addition to the spa, the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat was a chill area for adults away from all the action.

cruises carnival panorama

Outside of the spa, we also found an adults-only sundeck with quiet zones, hot tubs, daybeds, and cabanas that were free to use throughout the day. This was an unexpected treat when we wanted to enjoy a sunny day, but not get caught up in all the deck party action by the pool.

I was surprised that this space was free to enjoy, as cruise lines like Princess and Norwegian charge at least $20 for a few hours' usage for a similar space, in my experience.

Other fun included activities include a sports deck with foosball, basketball, an outdoor workout zone, corn hole, mini golf, table tennis, and yoga stretch sessions.

cruises carnival panorama

My friend and I are admittedly not that sporty, but I loved seeing the variety of outdoor activities for groups to enjoy at no extra cost.

The basketball court seemed particularly popular in the afternoons, while families used the mini golf course day and night.

I'm also always surprised that the ropes course and SkyRide, a suspended cycle ride, are free.

cruises carnival panorama

On past sailings, I've challenged myself to the free ropes course. It's intimidating at first but I think it becomes easier as you build confidence. Especially when I notice 10-year-olds passing me at a much faster pace.

The ropes course has solid platforms to walk from one area to the next, navigating the path via different rope obstacles. Guests use the ropes to balance themselves while taking in sea views from the elevated course. It's open to all ages, and is free.

There's also no upcharge for SkyRide, a suspended cycle ride positioned high above the top deck for a workout with incredible ocean views. Guests pedal themselves around the track at whatever pace suits them.

I'm always a bit amazed that this is a free activity aboard Panorama, as it seems like something that would have a separate fee, especially since guests can go on this ride as many times as they like.

The water slides and relaxing pools are my favorite way to spend a sea day on Panorama.

cruises carnival panorama

Each time I've sailed Carnival Panorama, the water slides end up being my favorite way to spend an afternoon. I think they're kid-friendly but have just enough thrill factor to keep adults running back up for another turn. I follow it with a dip in the pool, and it's pretty much my definition of a perfect day at sea.

When I just want to swim in the pool, in my experience, the mid-ship pool deck can be busy with deck chairs claimed early in the morning. Yet there's usually plenty of space in the pool for me to enjoy my dip.

The smaller pool on the back deck is another go-to, since I find less people use this one because there are fewer deck chairs. That's fine by me, since I prefer to spend my pool time actually in the water.

I always look forward to nightfall when many live music venues and entertainment come alive at no extra charge.

cruises carnival panorama

Each sailing, I look forward to the '80s deck party that has happened on every Carnival cruise I've taken. The DJ spins classic pop and rock, and just about everyone shows up in 80s fashion, so I always pack my cruise wardrobe accordingly.

Panorama also has many live music venues. Havana Bar is one of my favorites for Latin music and karaoke showdowns.

Additionally, the ship's main stage usually offers three production shows with rock, blues, soul, and a few Broadway favorites. These performances are free and don't require seat reservations or tickets.

The Atrium Bar is also a good spot to catch featured performers, including rock violinists,  throughout the day and all evening.

Throughout our cruise, I enjoyed just about every venue Panorama has to offer, but I always find my way to Alchemy Bar in the late evenings. It's where I think the best cocktails are served, and it's a central hub for meeting other groups of newfound friends.

For quieter evenings, I enjoy free Dive-In Movies on the big screen by the pool.

cruises carnival panorama

When I'm not catching a show or listening to music over a cocktail at sea, Dive-In Movies are my go-to for a quiet night. On the big screen above the pool, we caught new feature films under the stars. This offering doesn't require reserved seats or tickets and is yet another free activity.

Carnival Cruises are all about having fun. I genuinely thought we experienced great service and a never-ending list of things to do. And I can't believe we got to do it all for such a low price.

cruises carnival panorama

All week long, my friend and I commented on how attentive and friendly the Panorama crew were. At every turn, there was a wave, a friendly hello, or a question if we needed anything.

As a single traveler on a budget, I found the Panorama made it easy to maximize the good times. And even though Panorama always sails the same Mexican Riviera itinerary year-round, I never grow tired of this cruise. I already have another Panorama sailing booked for my spouse and I this year, and I can't wait to sail with a friend again — or by myself — on what has become my favorite budget-friendly cruise.

How much are drinks on Carnival cruise (drink prices)

Carnival alcohol and mixed drink prices on cruises are considered "moderate" for moderate drinking only. And the opinion of common folks is these prices do not contain much of the onboard fun. Still, they are pretty decent compared to other major cruise lines. Additional info and tips:

  • the service charge for opening a personal bottle of wine not bought on the premises (Carnival corkage fee) is $10 per bottle (if the wine is consumed in one of the main dining restaurants) and $14 if consumed in a specialty restaurant. All beverage prices include the 15% gratuity. However, Carnival's drink gratuity was increased to 18% (since December 2018).
  • check regularly the "Drinks of the Day" page (the ship's "Fun Times" newspaper) for daily discounted beverages. The "Early Bird Specials" (alcoholic beverages ordered before noon) are at pretty special prices. A "Bloody Mary" is only $3,95 - but only from 9 till 11am.
  • The list of Carnival free alcohol offers includes the Captain's cocktail party, the farewell party, art auctions, Past Guest receptions and free alcohol testing at the onboard duty-free shops (usually on the first day).

Originally brewed exclusively for the RedFrog Pub, the "frog-beer" is now served in select ship bars/lounges and it has a taste similar to Killian's Red. As to The Red Frog Pub, the 100-seat indoor/outdoor bar is on the newest liners and also on all Fun Ship 2.0 upgraded ships . Along with Thirsty Red Frog, the pub serves top-rated Caribbean rums and a "best beers Caribbean" collection. Next, are listed Carnival's Draft Beers prices:

  • $5,50 (16oz) and $28,95 (tube of 101oz) for the beers "Modelo Especial", "Dos Equis", "Presidente", "FROG'S PINT" (20oz)
  • Thirsty Red Frog beer price is: $5,50 (20oz), $16,95 (60oz), $27,95 (101oz).

Draft beers on Carnival cruise ships

In May 2017 was introduced a tropical-flavored draft beer via a partnership with the Miami-based Concrete Beach Brewery. The special beer is served exclusively at the "RedFrog Pub & Brewery" on Carnival Vista - the first brewery found on a North America-based cruise liner. The new "Miami Guava Wheat Beer" was hand-crafted by Colin Presby (brewmaster on the shipboard brewery) and made with the best ingredients.

  • Miami Guava beer has a light body and its primary ingredient is pink guava, also used in Miami's popular guava pastries. The new beer is available on a limited basis, and joins the 3 other original draft beers brewed on the Carnival Vista ship - ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin' IPA (floral flavor, with passion fruit and citrus overtones), ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat (unfiltered lager with banana aroma and spices) and FriskyFrog Java Stout (with hints of coffee).
  • Concrete Beach Brewery is an "Alchemy & Science" beer brand, operating as an independent subsidiary of "The Boston Beer Company". Other "Alchemy & Science" breweries in the USA include Angel City Brewery (Los Angeles) and Coney Island Brewing Co (Brooklyn, NYC New York). Their most popular draft beers are named "Tropic of Passion" (Miami), Angel City IPA (LA), and Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner (NYC).
  • US-homeported Carnival ships serve the Concrete Beach Brewery's Rica Wheat IPA, Angel City Brewery's Pilsner, Coney Island's Hard Root Beer, and 1609 Amber. On a regional basis, Carnival ships leaving from Miami offer Concrete Beach Brewery's Stiltsville Pilsner, ships from Long Beach (Los Angeles) offer Angel City Brewery IPA, and ships departing from NYC offer Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner.
  • Carnival Cruise Line also offers draft beers brewed either locally (in homeports) or within the homeport state. Such beers are offered on cruise ships leaving from NOLA New Orleans, Galveston TX, Baltimore MD, and Tampa FL, as well as on ships to Alaska and Hawaii.

In October 2019, Carnival introduced fleetwide the seasonal brew "ParchedPig Pumpkin Ale" (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, gingerbread, herbs, caramel, brown sugar). The beer is offered in both bottles (22-oz) and on draft, and in 3 variations - West Coast IPA, Toasted Amber, and Beach Lager.

By purchasing the "Island Hopper" beer bucket (at the Red Frog bar) you'll save $3 on every 4 beers. The cost of a beer bucket depends on the brand, you can also mix and match beers, sometimes there are specials

Carnival cruise martini tasting.

  • The Carnival's "Martini Tasting" deal will cost you $17 per person.
  • The list of all favorite martinis with Finlandia Vodka in your booze fun package/tour includes: "Berry Melody", "Mangotini", "Florida Squeeze", "Spicy Chipote", "Pomegranate Breeze", "Jack Julep", "Melon Crush" and the "Classic Cosmo" (for their exact ingredients - see the recipes link below).
  • Martini Tasting is available fleet-wide, but depending on ship/itinerary they offer it from twice a cruise to every night. To be sure when and where - check the "FunTimes" (onboard newspaper), it should be listed there.

Carnival Fun Shops liquor prices (alcohol, beer, drink packages)

Bon Voyage is open for business from Monday through Friday (9 AM to 6 PM EST) and closed on Memorial-Independence-Labor days, Thanksgiving, Christmas-New Years days.

  • Bon Voyage/Fun Shop orders are accepted up to 1-week prior to departure.
  • If an item is not available at the sailing time, an item of equal value will be substituted.
  • Fun Shop purchases will not show up on your booking info (meant to be a surprise after all). Carnival sends confirmation emails. If you didn't receive the email (sometimes it just happens) - send a request for confirmation.
  • All prices below are per bottle and don't include tax.
  • Alcohol brands are occasionally changed.
  • Tips: Fresh lemon and lime you can order via 24-hour room service (complimentary). If you buy souvenir glass, you can mix your "Bon Voyage" drinks in it and carry them wherever you want on the ship.

Fun Shop drink packages (beer, soda, bottled water, juices/mixers, energy drinks)

Tip: Fun Shops water cost is pretty high. Instead, you can buy a gallon (3,8 L) of distilled water from your cabin steward for US$3. Or use for free tap water on the boat - it is perfectly fine for drinking.

Carnival Bon Voyage alcohol policy rules

  • Any alcohol purchased through Fun Shops is delivered to staterooms (not to dining room tables).
  • If you buy wine through Bon Voyage, you don't pay a corkage fee.
  • There's a limit of max 2 bottles per cabin when ordering liquor (until recently it was 4 btls).
  • In the above list if you don't see something be sure to call/ask.
  • Due to Alabama and Texas alcohol laws, Carnival ships departing from Mobile AL and Galveston TX can't deliver alcoholic drinks to staterooms until the ship is in international waters (delivery may even be delayed until the following day).

Bon Voyage/Fun Shops prices updates

In January 2018, Carnival added a 15% delivery fee to any items pre-purchased from Fun Shops (prior departure). However, it doesn't apply to all purchases. The list of not charged items include packages ( Bottomless Bubbles , Cheers , Cruise Cash , Internet, water packages). The new delivery fee doesn't apply also to any liquor packages bought onboard with intent to carry home at the end of the voyage. The charge is added when, after having made Fun Shops selections, passengers make an actual purchase.

Carnival regularly makes "price corrections" on its Bon Voyage/Fun Shop liquor. While 12-year scotch from $75 now is $80, it's still way cheaper than $7-8 a drink at ship's bars.

  • In March 2013, CCL renamed its retail section from "Bon Voyage" to "The Fun Shops". Along with the name, they changed prices as well.
  • On most items prices were increased from 20 to 40%. Some of the "most expensive" examples are 9" BV Cakes ($9,95 to $14), "Fruit Supreme" basket ($39 to $50), and most of the liquor (up by 10-15% on average).
  • In June 2013, liquor prices were souring up again - the most "extravagant" cases showed up to a 25% increase.
  • Carnival Bon Voyage liquor prices are in US dollars, both per bottle and per glass (1,5 fl oz, 45 ml). The list of services (besides ordering liquor and fine wines) also includes special offers and various Carnival branded merchandise.
  • Fun Shop alcohol prices are about 2-3 times higher compared to your local liquor store. However, the savings you'll make onboard with this option make them well worth the purchase. While these prices may somehow seem a little bit over the edge, this service is a very convenient option to start your vacation.
  • Bon Voyage alcohol ordering saves good money. Most liquor brands are in 33,8 fl oz (1L) bottles, which makes these "alcohol packages" great deals.
  • And remember, the limit is 2 bottles per cabin.

Carnival Cruise Lines alcohol policy

The company's alcohol policy is mostly about bringing wine on Carnival ships . The allowance is one 750ml bottle of wine/Champagne per 21+yo passenger, only once (on embarkation day) and only in carry-on luggage.

Bringing alcohol on Carnival ships

Follows the list of "not allowed" alcohol-related rules.

  • selling/serving alcohol to passengers under 21 yo. Carnival reserves the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone.
  • buying alcohol for under-aged passengers
  • The legal drinking age on Carnival ships is 21 years of age - both for purchasing and consumption of alcoholic beverages at all bars-lounges-shops.
  • purchasing alcohol in seaports and onboard (duty-free) shops - your liquor is retained and stored until the end of the voyage.
  • Carnival's corkage fee (additional wine/Champagne serving charge when the wine wasn't bought on the premises) is $10 per bottle (if consumed in Main Dining Room) and $14 per bottle (specialty restaurants / at a fee).
  • "All you can drink" cruise deals are offered also on ship-charters and as a bonus on party-themed cruises .
  • Free alcohol on Carnival ships is offered at Captain's Welcome and Farewell cocktail parties, Past Guests receptions, art auctions, alcohol testings (at duty-free shops, usually on the first day), Steakhouse reservations (free wine on first-night promotions).

Carnival beverage policy

Carnival's alcohol and beverage policy rules were implemented (as officially stated) "to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board" - meaning to avoid shenanigans at sea.

Bringing water/soda on Carnival cruises

According to the old beverage policy:

  • the allowance was max 12 bottles/cans (max 20oz each, sealed) of non-alcoholic beverages (soft drinks, bottled water, juice, milk, iced tea, etc.
  • It allowed bringing soda on Carnival ships, but - only in carry-on luggage, in original and sealed containers (meaning not opened) and on each embarkation.
  • "Each embarkation" meant you can do so at each port of call. It was an unwritten rule and one of the coolest "tips and tricks"). However, purchasing sodas at call ports is rather expensive.

(NEW) Carnival drink policy changes

Starting July 9, 2015, Carnival Cruise Lines changed radically its beverage policy, implementing new rules on bringing water on Carnival ships. Signs with beverage policy changes were posted at all homeports.

  • Passengers are no longer allowed to bring their own bottled drinks on the ships. The main goal (as officially announced) is to lower the number of attempts by customers to smuggle alcohol using PVC bottles. Checking PVC bottles for liquor smuggling slows down the embarkation process, as security staff checks each bottle.
  • Passengers are allowed to bring max 12 unopened cans (volume 12-oz) or cartons per person. The list of canned drinks includes soda, juices, milk, sparkling water - stored in carry-on luggage.
  • Large coolers are not allowed, but you can take small coolers (max size 12x12x12 inches, or 30x30x30 cm) as carry-on luggage. These are used for non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications.

Since October 2015, in all call ports, Carnival passengers are allowed to bring nonalcoholic drinks on the ship. The allowance is only if the drinks are canned (or in cartons 12 ounces / 0,35 L or less). The enforced limit per person is 12 cans/cartons. Previously, the allowance for boarding the ship with beverages was for homeports only. The new rule didn't affect the ban on bottled beverages (enforced in July).

Carnival's wine policy remained unchanged, allowing passengers to bring 1 bottle of wine/champagne per person (750 ml, unopened, in carry-on luggage). No other liquor is allowed on board. Also unchanged is the rule about bringing distilled water onboard, excluding only passengers who need it for babies or CPAP machines ("continuous positive airway pressure").

(NEW) Bottled water prices

Carnival Cruise Line's bottled water prices were USD 2,99 (plus tax) for a 12-pack. The pricing is if you buy it before the voyage. The pack will be delivered to your cabin before departure. Onboard water price was USD 4.99 (plus tax).

However, In March 2016, bottled water prices were raised by over 30%. The price for 12-pack of water was USD 3.99, (up from USD 2.99, or 33 cents per 17-oz bottle). In December 2016, Carnival raised water prices again. The current bottled water price for 12-pack (16,9 fluid oz bottles) is USD 4.50 (plus 18% gratuity if ordered onboard) or over 10% increase.

Sneaking alcohol on Carnival cruise

This is a "cruise alcohol policy" of "cheap fun" people - read why some do it anyway. With Carnival, besides the thrill of sneaking something (alcohol or whatever), most smugglers do it because ships' alcohol prices are not cheap. Even if you order liquor through Fun Shops (prior departure) it's 2-3 times more expensive than in your local store. Some do it simply because Carnival doesn't supply their favorite brand.

alcohol on cruise ship - CruiseMapper

The Fun Shops service allows pre-purchasing liquor to be delivered to staterooms the second day of the voyage. Online purchases' deadline is 1-week prior departure. Two useful "bringing alcohol on ships" tips:

  • If you purchase your alcohol from Fun Shops, you're allowed to put your booze in a stainless steel flask (or Carnival tumbler) and carry it around the ship. Be sure not to take it with you while disembarking in ports. If security personnel find it, they will confiscate the flask when you re-board the ship. Of course, only if there's alcohol in it.
  • Pack your empty flask in the carry-on bag. If you pack it in checked baggage, you'll most probably get called to the "naughty guys room" to open luggage for inspection.

How to smuggle alcohol on Carnival cruises?

This is the smuggler's know-how for sneaking alcohol on cruise ships in general. The question of how to smuggle alcohol on ships is one of the industry's oldest. Smuggling alcohol is against cruise lines policy rules. This practice is forbidden, illegal, emotionally dangerous - don't do it! Ship's personnel check passengers' luggage - if you get caught, the hooch will be confiscated (basically that's all).

  • The confiscated bottle(s)/cans are stored for safekeeping until the morning of the voyage's last day). The "illegal" beverages (liquor/water/soda/wine) must be in original, manufacturer-sealed containers - other containers won't be returned. All unsealed liquids are discarded, without any compensation.
  • "Rum Runner flask" (costs around $10) has the best chance to go through security checks. These flasks are usually smuggled in checked baggage and are almost undetectable. However, if the security checks your bags for another reason and sees them, flasks will be taken and not returned.
  • "Wine Rack" is the latest booze-smuggling device. This boob enhancing, alcohol-filled bra contains over 25oz/750ml of your chosen liquid. They are absolutely right by saying this is way better than a regular boob job, and way cheaper too. Women look beautiful and save money on overpriced cruise drinks. The sneaking alcohol tool price is only US$30. The same price is the "BeerBelly" (capacity up to 80oz/2,4L).
  • Adults with a record of sneaking alcohol on Carnival ships, adults buying liquor for underage passengers and adults with other regular violations of the company's beverage policy may end up even with "early" (no-compensation) disembarkation or get banned for life.

Travel advisor Marcoux says Royal Caribbean's interior studio staterooms are ideal for singles as they come with "a virtual window that is designed to show the passenger what is actually going on outside that window while cruising." Want a wider view? Solo studio options also include an ocean view stateroom with balcony.

One of the most appealing aspects of a Royal Caribbean sailing is the Perfect Day at CocoCay , a private island destination in the Bahamas. The destination offers ziplining, a pristine beach with cabanas, water park, helium balloon ride, and snorkeling spots. Trips to CocoCay are so popular, cruisers can even take a short weekend cruise with this relaxing destination as the main feature.

Prefer to increase your adrenaline? Test your balance with a surf lesson onboard FlowRider, a wave simulator on the ship where guests can hang 10 with a 360-degree view of the ocean. After dark, meet fellow cruisers at a number of social nightclub venues with dancing, cocktails, and karaoke competitions aplenty.

Back when Carnival Cruise Line announced its Fun Ship 2.0 renovation program, it introduced a new cocktail venue called Alchemy Bar. Fast forward 11+ years, and the extremely popular bar can be found on nearly every ship in the fleet.

The Alchemy Bar has an old-timey pharmacy theme, where cocktails made from fresh ingredients are referred to as “remedies” and “elixirs.” Bartenders at this venue are called “mixologists,” and they wear uniforms reminiscent of white pharmaceutical coats.
