Essential guide to Grand Cayman (George Town) cruise port: tender boats and terminals, shore excursions or on your own by bus, and what's withing walking distance.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 28, 2023

George Town is the capital city of Grand Cayman and the port which all cruise ships visit. For those that have never been in this very popular cruise port, the cruise traveler should know that this is what is called a tender port .

Anchoring, tender boats and terminals

All cruise ships will anchor in the large bay right in front of George Town and double decked local boats will take passengers to one of the 3 piers-terminals right by the city. Regardless of the Pier/Terminal used, as you walk out the exit gates, the cruise traveler will be on the main road - Harbor Drive .

The main docking spot for the tenders is the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal on the northern part of George Town . This a rather large open area with a good number of shops (mainly souvenirs), taxis, tourist info, tour booths and a couple of bars - the Green Parrot is a famous hang out for those returning to the ship and waiting for tender boats.

But it can also happen that you will be tendering to any of the other two piers when there are more than a couple of ships in port, which happens very often. If tendering to either North or South Terminals , the cruise traveler will literally walk off the tender right into Harbor Drive as the terminal buildings are small and do not have much more than waiting areas with passenger controlling gates.

All these piers are within walking distance to the main attractions of George Town - Margaritaville, the Museum, all major Shops, and Restaurants.

To explore Grand Cayman on your own, there are taxis right outside any of the Terminals and a Bus Station within walking distance with services to all main destinations, attractions and most highlights. This is arguably the best way to travel around, deserving an additional word about the public bus service in Grand Cayman.

The public bus is naturally the most affordable way to explore Grand Cayman. Although many a cruise traveler may feel uneasy with public buses in the Caribbean, you shouldn't be as these are very safe , very well kept and a great way to travel around in Grand Cayman.

Central Bus Station in George Town Grand Cayman

Central Bus Station in George Town

The Central Bus Station in George Town is known as District Bus Depot and is located by Heroes Square , the main landmark in the town, between the Public Library and the CIBC bank. The Public Bus Depot is no more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) from any of the Terminals, as you can see on the map below.

Map showing walking paths to Central Bus Station in George Town Grand Cayman

Buses are small vans but with air condition, clean, inexpensive and everyone is very friendly - in fact, you will find that many visitors to Grand Cayman use the Public Bus services. Buses to the Seven Mile Beach depart every 10 to 15 minutes and cost US$ 2.50 per person each way. Most top attractions are served by these public buses costing US$ 2.50 to Turtle Farm , Hell , Pedro Castle or Pirate Cave ; to the Botanical Gardens ticket is $5.00 and $10.00 to Rum Point .

Shore Excursions or On Your Own

Like on any cruise port, your ship has a number of excursions aka 'Shorex' available to enjoy a day in Grand Cayman. Some are really a great and convenient way to make the best of your time in port.

However, many of the attractions offered on these tours/excursions can easily be explored on your own. This can be a good way to do it in Grand Cayman not only because the island is small, very safe and hospitable to cruise passengers but also because it is so easy to travel around - be it by bus, taxi or car rental.

Segaway Tour in Grand Cayman

Segway Tour

In fact, it became so easy for cruise passengers to just walk in or book excursions online that some tour operators do not allow cruise passengers to book tours. Segway , for example, doesn't allow Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise passengers to book directly online and refers clients to the onboard Shore Excursions Manager. Which begs interesting questions : how on earth will Segway know that you are on a cruise if you don't tell them? What jurisdiction applies if you are 'caught'? Is it a crime? Says who?

Exploring George Town

George Town is such a small place that the cruise visitor will be able to see it all at leisure. The city expands to the East but most attractions are close to the Harbor Drive and the two blocks inland. In the northern part of Harbor Drive, where the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal is located, you will find a few shops and right in front of the exit gate a street - Front Street - that will take you (around 100 yards/meters) right to Heroes Square .

Heroes Square, George Town in Grand Cayman

Heroes Square

On this square, with a modern fountain at its center near the already mentioned and convenient Bus Terminal, the visitor will find a few landmarks: the Town Hall, the Library, and the Court House. Along the Front Street, there are a few typical shops found everywhere in the Caribbean like Effy, Tanzanite International, Tortuga Rum Cake and Duty-Free Liquors or Milano Diamonds. But if shopping is your thing, the best shops are on or closer to Harbor Drive.

Fort George in Grand Cayman

Fort George

Walking South of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal (right turn at the exit gate) the cruise traveler will find the ruins of the Fort George and right in front the first of numerous duty-free shopping buildings - Flagship with an array of stores. Don't be surprised to find that the Fort George ruins are comprised of a couple of small remains (cannons) and that you may even pass by without realizing that 'those' are the remains of the landmark most travel guides talk about - feel free to join the Editor in wondering if such travel journalists have ever really been in the places described.

Elmslie Church in Grand Cayman

Elmslie Church

One block farther and you will see the Elmslie Memorial United Church on your left - a typical Caribbean small, quaint church, with a roof in the form of a ship’s hull turned upside down. The active Presbyterian church is very well maintained and worth a pick inside.

Margaritaville in Grand Cayman

Margaritaville In George Town, Grand Cayman

Right after, the bright colors of Margaritaville stand out in the Island Plaza Mall. Margaritaville in George Town is a bit smaller than most in the Caribbean but the ambiance is pretty much the same. By contrast, the Island Plaza shopping mall is slightly different than others in the Caribbean as most shops are locally owned and, therefore, you will find different brands and merchandise - Blackbeard's Liquors and Churchill's Cigars are a couple of the Editor's favorites - but also boutiques with typical brands like Pandora, Tag Heuer, or Breitling. At the end of the block, Cardinal Avenue is a continuation of the best shops in George Town - Cartier Boutique, Magnum Jewelers, Kirk, La Perfumerie, Time Zone, among others.

Duty Free Shops in Grand Cayman

Duty Free Shops

Landmark Building in Grand Cayman

Landmark Building

The next block is dominated by three colonial buildings with the ground floors displaying a string of duty-free shops - Shipwreck Coins Antiques is the one of a kind to have a look at, as is La Casa del Habano if looking for good Cuban cigars. The upper floors of the first building are occupied by Breezes , a Tropical Grill also serving pizza that is popular with crew members.

National Museum in Grand Cayman

National Museum

But it is on the next block that the visitor will find the most interesting (but lesser talked about) attraction in George Town - the Cayman Islands National Museum . This small museum is really worth a visit. Housed in a beautiful white colonial house, the museum showcases diverse exhibits of the Cayman Islands history and present reality. The exhibition is small but very well organized and displayed.

Bayshore Mall in Grand Cayman

Bayshore Mall

On the opposite side of Harbor Drive, by the sea, you will not miss the South Terminal and right across the massive Bayshore Mall . This is the top attraction for those on a shopping spree. Owned and operated by locals, the name Kirk Freeport may not mean much to most passengers cruising the Caribbean who are used to the typical ubiquitous brands promoted onboard all cruise ships.

However, this is a refreshing change with a more diverse selection of brands, good prices and, above all, without the 'buying-pressure' found elsewhere. Besides the Kirk Freeport shops, the cruise traveler will also find on the Bayshore Mall other boutiques (like Swatch ), a luxury Spa (Tips n Toes) and a few places to have a quick bite: Cayman Creperie (French crepes), Häagen-Dazs (ice cream), Lucky Slice (best pizza in town) and Stax (Indian Goan with a Caribbean touch).

South of George Town

South Terminal in Grand Cayman

South Terminal

Many cruise visitors tend not to explore much farther south of the Bayshore Mall but right in front (next to the South Terminal) you will see the Atlantis Submarines Cayman (and glass bottom Boat) which will redirect you to booking trough your cruise line and on the next corner the inevitable Hard Rock Cafe . A typical and famous Cayman souvenir shop - TooHot - and the famous artist Guy Harvey's gallery are next to each other and right after Hard Rock.

Guy Harvey Gallery in Grand Cayman

Guy Harvey Gallery

Both are worth a visit and in particular the Harvey's Gallery as this is probably one of the largest and best collections of the artist's work you will see in the Caribbean. On the next block, Guy Harvey also gives the name to an excellent restaurant with wonderful views - entrance on side street (Merrendale Dr). On the same block, the cruise traveler will not miss the Harley Davidson shop, the Blue Iguana Souvenir Outlet and the Church of God Full Gospel Hall.

Craft Market in Grand Cayman

Craft Market

The Cayman Craft Market is the next attraction (where you may find a local hand-made souvenir) and, hidden inside on a large office building, there is an off the beaten track cafe/bar, South West Collective , know by savvy cruisers for excellent coffee, quick bites, and free Wi-Fi . On the ocean side, with a spectacular location and view, Paradise is both a restaurant (cuisine doesn't match the quality of the location) and shore diving and snorkeling spot. Around 120 yards/meters south of Paradise, you will find Eden Rock Diving Center - one of the best dives in Cayman - and 300 yards/meters farther, another diving center ( Don Foster's Dive ).

If lunch in a spectacular setting with historical charm is on your must do in Grand Cayman, then the Grand Old House - 2 miles (2.8km) south of George Town - is the right place to go. This former plantation house established in 1908 has been transformed into a wonderful restaurant with colonial style indoor rooms and a panoramic waterfront terrace serving local and international flavors and a famous wine list.

North of George Town

Fish Market in Grand Cayman

Fish Market

North of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, Harbor Drive changes the name to North Church Street . At walking distance, there a few nice places to enjoy. The first you will come across is a very talked about fish market. If you read about this in many a review, you may expect a large sort of venue but, in fact, the Fish Market is no more than a couple of tented stalls on a small sandy cove with fishermen cleaning fish - a nice site but not the huge highlight as some like to emphasize. Immediately after, you will not miss the Cayman Cabana restaurant sign - a great place to have lunch or just a drink on the open deck with wonderful ocean views. But the main attraction is really the Sea Trek Experience on the lower deck of the restaurant - here you can safely and comfortably explore the underwater world with a helmet diving system.

Scuba Diving in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Casanova in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Casanova

Next to Sea Trek (and Cayman Cabana restaurant) there is another restaurant which is very popular among cruise passengers - Casanova , a good Italian as the name implies - and next to this another diving experience at the Divers Down , which offers an array of tours and a dive to the Wreck of Kittiwake , a US Navy submarine rescue vessel sunk as an artificial reef and one of the most request dive sites on Grand Cayman.

Restaurant Rackam's in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Rackam's

Rackam's Bar and Grill is just a few meters away and is one of the Editor's favorite stops in George Town. No more than 300 meters/yards north of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, Rackam's has wonderful views, great service, typical Caribbean food and free Wi-Fi - naturally, both savvy cruisers and experienced crew members are regular patrons. Nautilus is next to Rackam's and offers underwater tours on a semi-submarine with a spacious air-conditioned observatory but also sailing Catamaran excursions (3 hours) for to the world famous Stingray City .

Restaurant Da Fish Rack in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Da Fish Rack

On the next 100 meters (yards) you will find three other popular restaurants with great views and food - Da Fish Shack , Le Vele Restaurant and the Lobster Pot (which also has a diving center on the ground floor). In between, there are a few services and shops that might be of interest for cruise passengers - Cayman Auto Rentals (and scooters), the Cayman Helicopter Tour store and Liquor 4 Less (duty-free store - does a Budweiser 6 pack for $9.99 sound appealing?).

Caymana Bay in Grand Cayman

Caymana Bay

Farther north and too much of a stretch to walk - short of 1 mile (1.3km) - you should know that for some time now the Wharf Restaurant is only open for dinner and, next to it, the small and secluded (public) Pageant Beach is nice but not comparable with any other the world famous beaches in Grand Cayman.

Royal Palms Beach in Grand Cayman

Royal Palms Beach

Not too far from George Town, the cruise traveler will find two of the Editor's favorites in Grand Cayman: the Royal Palms Beach Club right on a beautiful spot of the Seven Mile Beach and across the road - Camana Bay an unexpected oasis with great restaurants, shops and very close to the wonderful National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. Both Royal Palms and Camana Bay are at too far to walk from George Town - around to 2 miles (2.9 km) - and it is way more convenient to get on a bus ($2.50 each way per person).

Tenders Beside Cruise Ship in George Town Grand Cayman

George Town is the capital city of Grand Cayman and serves as the primary port of entry for ships heading to the island. Known as a tender port, this means that instead of directly docking at the terminal, tender boats will ferry you from the cruise ship to the terminal.

George Town and Grand Cayman are fascinating places to explore on a cruise day in port. This article provides comprehensive information about George Town’s port, along with recommendations for shore excursions and dining options.

Map of George Town

George Town Cruise Port

George Town Grand Cayman Cruise Port Tenders

Grand Cayman is a tender port, meaning that cruise ships remain anchored in a large bay in front of George Town. Passengers are then transported to the terminals by double-decked tender boats, typically owned either locally or provided by the cruise ship.

Make sure to allocate some additional time for your return trip to the cruise ship, as long lines for the tender boats are common. These queues can cause delays in getting back to the ship. To avoid any last-minute rush and prolonged waits, consider starting your return to the ship a bit earlier than usual, compared to when at a docked port.

The George Town cruise port has three terminals: Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, North Terminal, and South Terminal. These terminals are within walking distance to each other, and are only a short walk away from most George Town attractions. Some of the cruise lines that dock at Grand Cayman include Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Disney, and Marella UK.

When cruising to Grand Cayman, you’ll probably arrive at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, a spacious open area featuring tour booths, taxis, and various facilities. Nearby, you’ll also find places to eat and drink, such as Snappers, Island Squeeze, and Tortuga Rum Co.

If other cruise ships are already anchored, you may find yourself at either the North or South Terminal. Both of these terminals, situated along Harbour Dr, feature a small sheltered area for waiting and offer plenty of places to shop and eat close by.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port | 11 Best Things To Do In Grand Cayman

Beach break at the White House, Grand Cayman

Welcome to the Grand Cayman cruise port guide!

The Cayman Islands are the British Overseas Territory lying south of Cuba, in the western Caribbean Sea. They comprise three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman island, the major and largest one, is a world-famous, upscale tourist destination and a popular seaport in the Caribbean. In this Grand Cayman cruise travel guide, read about:

  • Grand Cayman cruise port (Grand Cayman cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)
  • Top 11 things to do in Grand Cayman port and best Grand Cayman shore excursions

Grand Cayman Cruise Port

Grand Cayman cruise port is located in George Town, the capital of Grand Cayman nestled in the southwest corner of the island.

Grand Cayman is a tender port which means that the cruise terminal doesn’t have docking facilities. Instead, the cruise ships drop the anchor in the bay in front of George Town and use the large, fast tender boats to bring the passengers ashore.

Georgetown cruise port consists of three cruise piers/terminals: North , South , and the Royal Watler cruise terminal , all located close to each other, within a 5-minute walk from the George Town city center.

Grand Cayman cruise port

The main terminal is the Royal Watler cruise terminal and this is where the passengers get off/get on the tender boats. Once you get off the tender boat, you’ll see the security gates and the port staff who will point you to the exit. Getting around is easy and there is no way you can get lost.

Once you pass the security gates, you’ll find yourself in a large area where you can find free restrooms, souvenir shops, a Tortuga Rum liquor store, several bars, coffee to take away, and numerous tour operator stands.

Alternatively, your cruise ship may dock at the North or South terminals . These are smaller and consist of smaller terminal buildings with security gates and waiting areas. From there, you can directly access Harbour Drive, the main street in George Town, as well as tour buses and taxis.

Getting Around Georgetown Cruise Port

  • The tender boat ride takes 10-15 minutes, but the whole process of filling the tender boats and getting on/off takes longer, so always save at least 45 minutes for the tendering operation. The same goes for the way back – you may experience long lines and crowds upon getting back to the ship, so make sure you board your tender boat at least 1 hour before cruise ship departure time.
  • The shore excursion meeting location is normally at the Royal Watler terminal area. You’ll see several differently colored tents (red, green, yellow, orange, blue, white, etc.) and under the tents, there are tour operator booths where you check in for your excursion. ( Note: This depends on the cruise line, so always double-check the information on your tour ticket ). Royal Watler cruise terminal is extremely busy when there are several ships in port, and you might have difficulties in finding your meeting place due to the crowds. Therefore, make sure you come on time and follow the instructions on your tickets.
  • Tour buses and taxis are parked outside the terminal area. Most of the taxis are small minivans that require several people to operate.
  • George Town and the port area are flat and suitable for wheelchair users/people with walking difficulties.
  • The island is safe to move around.
  • The cheapest option to get around the island is by local bus . Buses are small, the tickets are cheap, and if you see them on the street, you can also wave and they usually stop to pick you up. The Public Transit Bus Depot is the main bus station and is located at Heroes Square, only a few minutes’ walk from the terminal. From there, you can take a bus to Seven Mile Beach, Pedro St. James, Turtle Farm, and other island attractions.
  • The Cayman Islands currency is the Caymanian dollar (KYD). 1 USD equals 0.80 KYD. Credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted, so there is no need to change the money to a local currency. ATMs are available downtown.
  • Although Grand Cayman’s climate is tropical, hot and humid all year round, the weather is quite unpredictable. The Cayman Islands are one of the Hurricane most affected areas in the Caribbean and tropical storms and strong winds are frequent.
  • Because of the unpredictable weather, snorkeling, sailing, Turtle Farm, Stingray City, and other shore excursions may be canceled last minute due to safety reasons. The tour operators may not know it until the very last moment, so I would advise you to always have an alternative option.
  • Owen Roberts International Airport is the main international Grand Cayman airport and is located 4 km/2.5 miles (less than a 10-minute drive) from the Grand Cayman cruise terminal.
  • Major cruise lines sailing to the port of George Town Grand Cayman include Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line.

11 Best Things to Do in Grand Cayman Cruise Port

1. george town.

George Town city has the largest population of all British Overseas Territories and is the financial hub of the Cayman Islands. This wealthy port city is a safe and clean place that boasts a wide range of attractions and activities for cruise travelers. The city center is within a short walk from the George Town cruise terminals. Below are the top city attractions:

  • Harbour Drive – The main street where the majority of duty-free shops, banks, restaurants, bars, and a few historical landmarks are situated. Grand Cayman shopping is a great experience as the island is tax-free, so the shops are duty-free and the selection of stores is amazing!
  • Elmslie Memorial United Church – An old, beautiful 19th-century church is located on Harbour Drive street, a 5-minute walk from the cruise terminals.
  • Margaritaville – Located on Harbour Drive street, opposite the North terminal and next to the Elmslie Memorial United Church, Margaritaville is the favorite spot for the cruisers! It has a pool and boasts great service, delicious food, and a fun atmosphere. It is surrounded by shops (Cariloha and Del Sol, jewelry stores, and shopping malls), and several other bars and restaurants, such as Sharkeez and Burger King.
  • Fort George Ruins – The ruins are located on Harbour Drive street, right in front of the Royal Watler cruise terminal. They consist of the two cannons and remains of the old fort that played a major role in the protection of the harbor in the 18 th century. You can freely access the place and you’ll easily recognize it by the wooden lookout house and three beautiful murals painted by the local artist John Broad.
  • Heroes Square – The main city square is situated less than a 5-minute walk from Fort George and the cruise terminal. Here, you’ll find several important buildings, such as the Courthouse, the Town Hall with a small, white Clock Tower built to commemorate World War I, the Legislative Assembly Building (Government Office), and a George Town Public Library. The square boasts a round fountain, palm trees, statues, and a monument to the National Heroes of Grand Cayman. Here is also the Public Transit Bus Depot, the main bus station.
  • Cayman Island National Museum – Located opposite the South terminal, the museum is housed in a lovely 19th-century building and offers exhibits where you can learn about the island’s history and culture. The museum also has a gift shop offering a great selection of books and local products, and a tour of the place takes about an hour.

2. Seven Mile Beach

Seven miles of sugar-white, powdery sands and sparkling turquoise waters lined with luxurious hotel and beach resorts have attracted tourists from the entire world for years. The beach has been recognized multiple times as the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean.

This piece of paradise is located on the west coast of Grand Cayman, north of George Town, and it takes less than a 10-minute drive to get there. Seven Mile Beach consists of several beach areas that are all considered public property.

The most popular ones are Governor’s Beach , Public Beach , and Cemetery Beach (the northernmost one). They all offer a wide range of facilities and water activities such as snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, sailing, kayaking, jet-skiing, parasailing, segway rides, and more.

Dozens of restaurants and beach bars can be found on the beach, offering excellent service and delicious food, as well as major hotel chains , designer shops, and other venues. Every beach area has parking where the taxis normally wait for the tourists.

3. Cayman Turtle Farm

One of the major attractions on the island is the Grand Cayman Turtle Farm (Turtle Centre), situated in the West Bay district, a 20-minute drive (13 km/8 miles) north of the port.

Home to over 11,000 green sea turtles, it is one of the most popular Caribbean wildlife parks featuring various cultural, educational, and entertaining programs, where you can discover the fascinating animal world of Grand Cayman and interact with its residents.

In the Turtle Center, you can explore the Green Sea Turtles’ breeding pond, the Turtle education center, the lagoon where you can swim with reef fish and young Green Sea Turtles; the Butterfly Garden, the crocodile Smiley’s pond, the Free Flight Aviary, waterslides, the Breakers lagoon, and much more.

The complex also houses a restaurant and a gift shop. There is also an open-air museum where you can see the replicas of Cayman-style houses and gardens.

4. Swim with Dolphins

Grand Cayman boasts several locations where you can interact with these adorable mammals. The most famous one is Dolphin Discovery , located right next to the Turtle Center, a 20-minute drive from the George Town cruise terminal.

The other one is Dolphin Cove Cayman , situated nearby in the West Bay, a 15-minute drive from the cruise port. They both offer various interaction programs where you get to chance to pet, hug, kiss, and dance with the dolphins, and for more daring ones – you can swim with them, and let them pull and push you out of the water!

Grand Cayman Dolphin encounter

5. Stingray City

Situated in the middle of the North Sound of Grand Cayman, a 25-minute ride from the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal (19 km/11.8 miles), Stingray City Sandbar is a popular island attraction and a shore excursion offered by both cruise lines and local tour operators.

Nestled within the barrier reefs surrounding the island, the Stingray City consists of a large sandbar where you can swim with various species of fish and its most popular residents – the giant, friendly stingray that you can pet, feed, and play with! The water is shallow, only 2-4 feet, ideal for kids and families who want to spend a fun-filled day interacting with the largest stingrays in the Caribbean!

Some tours may include a snorkeling portion at the barrier reef and a stop at Starfish Point, a laid-back, secluded beach with shallow, crystal-clear water where the colorful starfish can be spotted. Stingray City is usually crowded because it’s one of the major island attractions.

6. USS Kittiwake Shipwreck

Grand Cayman boasts several great locations for snorkeling, including the USS Kittiwake shipwreck, a salvage and rescue vessel that was operational for over 50 years, sunk in 2011, and transformed into an artificial reef and an underwater attraction.

The USS Kittiwake lies in the north portion of Seven Mile Beach, and to get there, you need to take a 15-minute ride up north along Seven Mile Beach, and then board a boat that will get you to the shipwreck.

The USS Kittiwake is the most popular diving location as well. The maximum depth is 65 ft, with the top of the wreck around 15 ft. The wreck was cleared of all hazardous materials and it is completely safe to explore its chambers and the abundant sea life.

The site has a sandy bottom and is packed with thousands of beautiful colorful fish, conchs, some stingrays, and starfish.

Grand Cayman Snorkel

Besides the USS Kittiwake shipwreck and artificial reef, there are two other snorkel sites you should check out: Wreck of the Cali, the closest one to the cruise port, and the Smith’s Barcadere, located a 5-minute driving distance south of George Town.

To get to the Wreck of the Cali , all you have to do is turn left upon exiting the terminal, walk along the main street for less than 5 minutes and you’ll spot the fish market. Opposite the market, there is Rackham’s dock, from where you can swim to the wreck that is located 40 yards off the shore. It lies at a depth of 15-20 ft and is easily spotted as the water is quite calm and clear. The distance being long, this snorkeling site is not recommended for first-time snorkelers, but if you don’t mind swimming, this place is perfect.

Smith’s Barcadere is the sandy cove where you can snorkel from the shore. A calm sea, gentle waves, and an intimate atmosphere are what make it perfect for those who want to escape crowded places.

7. White House Colonial Mansion

Located a 25-minute drive (17 km/10.5 miles) east of the George Town port, the White House is an exclusive private mansion offering all-inclusive service to its visitors. The mansion dates from the colonial period and is a perfect beach escape for those who want to enjoy privileged treatment and exclusive service.

You can enjoy the specialties of Grand Cayman’s amazing cuisine and great cocktails at their bar restaurant, or relax on the sunbeds and loungers while taking in the views of the pristine sands and emerald water.

The only thing I didn’t quite like was the beach – it can be accessed only from the short ladder at the end of the bar deck and it has a rocky bottom. If you want to go kayaking or snorkeling, you can do it as well. Make sure you bring your snorkel gear, but if you don’t have one, you can rent it on-site too.

The White House Colonial Mansion, Grand Cayman

8. Crystal Caves

Set in the lush tropical vegetation, Grand Cayman Crystal Caves are located on the North Side, a 35-minute drive (30 km/18.5 miles) from the George Town cruise terminal.

In the company of a knowledgeable tour guide, you can explore the three breathtaking caves and their impressive geological formations, along with the surrounding tropical forests, home to abundant flora and fauna. The tour of the caves lasts usually up to 1h 30 minutes, and there is also a gift shop where you can get souvenirs and refreshments.

9. Go to Hell

Located a 20-minute driving distance north (11.5 km/7 miles) from the Grand Cayman port, in the West Bay district (close to the Turtle Center and Dolphin Reserve), the Hell is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.

This bizarre natural attraction covers the football field-size area featuring jagged, black limestone rock formations that are said to be millions of years old. The legend says that back in the past an early British Commissioner was touring the island and upon arriving at this site, he exclaimed “My God, this must be what Hell looks like!”

Another story says that a British Commissioner named Cardinal was visiting the area and came with friends on a bird shooting expedition. In the vicinity of the rocks, he aimed, shot, and missed. His friends muttered “Oh, Hell”, and the place later became known as “Hell”.

The Hell, Grand Cayman

There is an elevated platform from where you can take unique photos and observe this natural marvel. The rocks are razor sharp and it’s forbidden to climb them. There are two gift shops where you can purchase souvenirs, as well as a post office from where you can send your postcards from Hell to your loved ones. There is no charge to enter Hell.

Check out the Hell tours and activities

10. Pedro St. James

Located a 20-minute drive (12 km/7.5 miles) from the George Town port, on the southern coast of the island, Pedro St. James is the restored 18th-century plantation home offering history exhibits and tours.

Constructed on a stunning location overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Pedro St. James is the Cayman Islands National Historic Site that belonged to the wealthy Englishman who, back in 1780, created an astonishing 3-story building using slave labor from Jamaica. The building was massive compared to neighboring single-level dwellings and ever since has been called “Castle” due to its imposing size.

Pedro St. James

Today, it is a history museum where you can explore 18th-century furniture and authentic artifacts, see the Stamp Room and Hurricane Ivan Memorial, or go for the rum tasting. The highlight of the visit is the 20-minute theater show that reveals the fascinating history of Pedro St. James and the Cayman Islands.

11. Helicopter Ride

Top off your visit with one of the most thrilling and exciting Cayman Islands tours – the Helicopter ride over Seven Mile Beach and Grand Cayman. The helipad is located close by, only a 5-minute driving distance from the George Town cruise terminal, and the ride itself lasts 15-20 minutes. You’ll enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the island and the aerial sight of the ships from the birds’ perspective! More details on https://caymanislandshelicopters.com/

TRAVEL BY SHIP ACROSS EVERY SHADE OF BLUE

Grand Cayman is home to George Town, where up to four cruise ships can anchor at one time. If there are more than four cruise ships in port, the others remain in the harbour. Passengers are ferried to one of three terminals, all of which are about five minutes away. For those sailing by charter, we have two major ports of entry. One is located on Grand Cayman and the other is on Cayman Brac. Port Security greets travellers on VHF Channel 16 around the clock and, upon entering the Cayman Islands territory, vessels must fly the Q flag. All guns, spear guns, and other weapons must be left with customs. Outside fruit and plant life are not allowed on island. Many of our waters are environmentally protected and there are regulations to preserve these areas. Fixed moorings should be used instead of anchor chains to prevent coral damage. Gill nets and poison are prohibited. Spear guns and seine nets require a licence from the Cayman Marne Conservation Board. Removal of marine life (coral, sponges) is prohibited. There are also specific terms regarding fishing for lobster, conch, and grouper. For more information, please call the  Maritime Authority at 345-949-8831.

George Town, Grand Cayman Cruise Port Guide

A Grand Cayman cruise brings you to an enchanting island of long, sandy beaches, translucent water, and spectacular marine life. The island, the largest in the Cayman archipelago, is one of the most prosperous in the Caribbean thanks to its status as a center of offshore finance, yet also exudes a laid-back charm.

Cruises to Grand Cayman drop anchor off George Town, the waterfront lined by wooden buildings in bright colors. Although the lure of soft sand and sparkling water is compelling, there’s plenty to see and do here, from lush botanical gardens to mysterious caves. Divers will find exciting wrecks to discover, while there’s fascinating history at the stately Pedro St. James Castle and a vibrant art collection at the National Gallery. This is before you’ve even begun to check out the designer shops and the enticing array of restaurants and beach bars waiting for you to explore on your Caribbean cruise .

Top sights & attractions on cruises to grand cayman, seven mile beach.

Although it’s technically only five and a half miles in length, the famous Seven Mile Beach is a long series of white coral sands and small coves lined with cafés and restaurants. You’ll find everything from waterfront cocktail lounges to sun umbrellas, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks here. Bring a mask and snorkel; spectacular marine life over the coral reefs just offshore makes this a good spot for beginners.

Crystal Caves

Head underground at Old Man Bay into the Crystal Caves, a network of around 100 caves dazzling with otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites, the rocky ceilings sparkling with crystals. Pirates used to shelter from hurricanes here, and legend has it that the caves still contain hidden treasure. You’ll visit three caves, including one with a subterranean lake. Then, explore the surrounding tropical forests, where you could see brilliantly colored parrots in the trees.

Pedro St. James

Uncover some local history at Pedro St. James Castle, where the islands’ first legislative assembly was elected and the proclamation ending slavery was issued. This stately stone house at Spotts Bay dates back to 1780 and is one of the oldest buildings on the islands. Visit the mahogany interior to admire the art collection and colonial-era furniture, and stroll through lush tropical gardens for romantic views of Great Pedro Bluff.

Top things to do in grand cayman, mingle with stingrays.

Standing on a sandbar in warm, shallow water while docile stingrays brush gently past your legs is a memorable sensation. Stingray City lies in Grand Cayman’s North Sound, accessible by boat, and is a spot where stingrays would congregate to feed on the fish trimmings thrown overboard by local fishermen. Nowadays, the rays know they’ll get tidbits from visitors. Keep your feet on the seabed or snorkel over the sandbar, watching these graceful creatures mill around.

Dive Over Wrecks

Grand Cayman offers some of the best diving in the Caribbean, as it’s fringed by reefs and walls, and the water is crystal clear. Dive at Devil's Grotto, known for its intricate caverns and abundant marine life. Or explore the USS Kittiwake, a submarine rescue vessel that was scuttled in 2011 to create an artificial reef, now populated by eagle rays and groupers. The highest part of the wreck is just 15 feet below the surface, so experienced snorkelers can dive down as far as the wheelhouse.

Stroll Through Beautiful Gardens

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Gardens, opened by the late queen herself in 1994, is 65 acres of woodland trails, gardens, and wetlands populated by butterflies, parrots, and other native birds. Visit the vibrant Colour Garden and the fascinating Heritage House for a glimpse into the tough life of early island settlers. You’ll also see the endemic blue iguanas basking in the sunshine; the gardens run a conservation program to protect this handsome but endangered lizard.

Top Food & Drink in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is one of the best Caribbean destinations for food lovers, with more than 200 restaurants serving everything from tasty Caribbean specialties to healthy spots offering fresh juice and healthy bowls. Look out for traditional Caribbean fare like beans and rice, or spicy jerk chicken. Fish rundown is a slow-cooked stew of assorted seafood with coconut milk, thyme, Scotch bonnet, and pumpkin. You’ll see conch on every menu in the form of tasty fritters, a crisp salad, or a creamy conch chowder. For dessert, try sticky toffee pudding, which consists of a rich sponge made with dates served with a toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Local drinks include rum, which is distilled on the island and served in a fruity punch, among other cocktails. For something authentically local, order a mudslide, made with vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, cherry, and cinnamon.

Culture & History of Grand Cayman

Christopher Columbus reported sighting the Cayman Islands in 1503. While not home to any permanent settlements, the islands were visited by indigenous tribes and were populated by crocodiles and iguanas, with seas teeming with turtles. Turtles remain a symbol of the islands today, although their population was drastically reduced by passing ships hunting them for their meat.

Throughout the 17th century, the islands were frequented by pirates and privateers. British settlement began in the mid-17th century, primarily by individuals of British, African, and Jamaican descent. Until the mid-20th century, islanders mainly relied on fishing, subsistence farming, and employment in the merchant navy for foreign ships. However, a shift began with the opening of the first commercial bank, the establishment of hotels, the creation of the world’s first scuba diving center, and the government's encouragement of the growth of the international finance industry — which thrives today thanks to zero taxation, a British legal system, and political stability.

Although many Caymanians have emigrated to work abroad, a strong sense of national identity has been maintained, with many individuals eventually returning home. Today, the Cayman Islands enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean and remain a British Overseas Territory.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Your cruise ship will dock in George Town Harbor and you’ll be tendered ashore to one of three tender terminals, all of them on Harbour Drive, within easy reach of the bus terminal and the main sights and shops of George Town. You’ll find souvenir shops, taxis, tourist information, and plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, although no facilities in the tender docks themselves.

Transportation in Grand Cayman

The easiest way to get around Grand Cayman if you’re not joining a shore excursion is by taxi, and you’ll find cars waiting at the port. There are no rideshare services here. Otherwise, the island has an efficient bus network, with minibusses operating multiple routes to all the main attractions. You can wait at a bus stop or simply flag the driver down.

Mopeds, bicycles, and quad bikes are available to rent, but do remember that driving is on the left here, as it is in Britain.

Shopping in Grand Cayman

George Town has a wide range of elegant shops, many specializing in high-end jewelry and luxury labels. Be on the lookout for colorful Caribbean art, antique maps, and even shipwreck coins. Local jams, spicy sauces, and rum cakes make great gifts to take home. For something really unusual, look for jewelry made from Caymanite, a gemstone that comes in a spectrum of earthy colors. It’s found only in the Cayman Islands and made into beautiful bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and cufflinks by local craftspeople.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in George Town and the rest of the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands dollar, which is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at $1.20 U.S. to $1 Cayman. Most places will display prices in both currencies. You’ll find that U.S. dollars are widely accepted, although you may be given change in local currency. If you do need Cayman Islands dollars during your Grand Cayman cruise, you’ll find ATMs located throughout downtown George Town.

A tip of 10% to 15% is expected when dining at restaurants in Grand Cayman, unless service is already included. Taxi drivers don’t expect tips, although you could round up the bill, and it’s customary to tip a good tour guide $5 to $10 per person.

You can take a submarine ride on the Atlantis or ride on the partially submerged Nautilus to get some great underwater views if you prefer not to get wet. You'll find access to them located at the harbor, as well

The most popular attraction in Grand Cayman is Stingray City . Stingray City is a string of sand bars in shallow water where the stingrays have grown accustom to humans after being feed over time by fishermen. A tour should cost around $39 if you book locally. If more than one ship is in town, this attraction will get very busy and cruise organized excursion might be the way to go.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

A great way to see Grand Cayman is to take a tour. A tour through the cruise line will cost around $50 each. However, the same tour can purchased through a local on the island for as little as $15-20 a person. The tours stop by the Governer’s mansion (you briefly stop in front of it), Hell, the Tortuga Rum Factory, Sea Turtle Farm/Dolphin Discovery Cove, and a stop at 7 Mile Beach. Your tour guide will also give you the history of the island and people as your ride from one stop to another.

By Taxi: Cabs without meters are available at the dock. Rates are fixed and posted, but be sure to confirm the fare before the driver takes off. New cabs have meters. Most cabs are actually van-sized, and drivers will require a four passenger minimum before they'll take you anywhere.

Car rentals are readily available. You must be 21 years old to rent a car. Driving is on the left hand side of the road and seat belt use is mandatory. Visitors must get a temporary driver's license from the police station or car rental agency. This is obtained by showing a valid drivers license from their home state, county or parish and paying a US$20 fee.

Mopeds and scooter rentals are available on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. Helmet use is required. Usual daily rate is US$25 for helmet and permit.

Buses are small, the tickets are cheap, and whether you see them on the street, you can also wave and they might stop to pick you up.

This is a British Crown Colony and everyone drives on the left side of the street, be very careful and pay close attention where you are walking or driving.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Shopping and Food

George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands and offers the very best duty-free and souvenir shopping with a vast selection of items to choose from. Many duty-free stores are also now located within walking distance of the cruise terminal for your shopping pleasure.

Beware of the 'Cruise Line Recommended' slogan when considering where to shop. 'Cruise Line Recommended' simply means that the merchant has paid the cruise line a fee for advertizing his business on board the ship, and the products purchased at these stores are usually no better than in any other store. In fact, you may pay more at a 'Cruise Line Recommended' store to cover the cost of that advertising.

You'll find that most restaurants automatically add a 15% gratuity on your tab.

The currency of Grand Cayman is the Cayman Dollar.

CI$1 = US$1.25 = €0.78 = UK£0.62

Beware of how merchandise is priced. Usually everything is marked in Cayman Dollars. One U.S. dollar is only equal to 80 cents Caymanian. The first time you hand over a U.S. $20 bill and they ring it up as $16, you may go into shock... so be prepared.

Cruise Port Guide Georgetown – Grand Cayman: at anchor

Cruise ships drop anchor in the bay of Georgetown and tender people to shore. There are 3 tender piers in town: the North Cruise Terminal, South Cruise Terminal and Royal Watler Terminal. They are all on Harbour Drive and only a short distance away from each other. Find their exact location on the map above. You will find all of the cruise docks are in the city centre and facilities like tourist information, ATM’s and taxis are close by. The shops are all across the road. If you would like to know what other ships are in port check the following link: http://www.caymanport.com/shipschedules.php The town of Georgetown is really small and you will find most of the town is set around the 3 streets at the tender dock. Therefore the town is easy to explore by foot. To get a little further afield you will need transportation. Find your transportation options underneath:

Taxis on Cayman

You will find many taxis driving on the street or at the taxi stand at the tender pier (Royal Walter Terminal). Aside from regular sized taxis mini-vans are also an available option. Taxi fares usually go per person. Take into account a ride to 7 mile beach will cost approximately 5 US dollars per person. Always negotiate the price before stepping into the taxi.

Public Transport

The mini vans with blue license plates are the public busses. Catch them at the bus station next to the library on Edward street. Busses to West Bay go several times per hour and the fare is CI$2.

Grand Cayman is known for its snorkelling and diving. Diving can be best arranged straight through the dive school, which we recommend to arrange at home before you go. One of the most unique places for snorkelling is at Stingray city. These shallow waters (3,5 meters, 12 foot) is where you are going to find the famous stingrays of Grand Cayman. Find dozens of them here in the water.

Grand Cayman has several beaches. The best ones are situated on the west side of the island and luckily Georgetown is close to them (about 2,5 km away). The most popular beach on the island would be Seven Mile beach This 6,6 mile long beach called 7 mile beach is one of the best known beaches of the Caribbean and it is just a short ride away from Georgetown. The beach is ideal for snorkelling, for finding a high end resort or just a public beach. You can find it all on 7 mile beach. Just mention to your taxi driver what you are looking for (watersports, resort, bar, public beach etc.) and he’ll know where to drop your off. You could also walk from the tender pier to Seven Mile beach, but take into account it is at least a 30 minute (2,5 km) walk in the heat.

Go to Hell

There is a spot on Grand Cayman that is called Hell. Hell is kind of a tourist trap, but people just seem to love to send that postcard from Hell to their loved ones saying: “Greetings from hell, wish you were here.” You will find some hell like rock formations in the backyard, a souvenir shop with post office and that is about it. Find Hell about 12 km north of Georgetown.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The Grand Cayman cruise port at George Town is one of the top five cruise stops in the Caribbean because of three major shore excursions.

They are Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City and the Cayman Turtle Centre.

About 400,000 people visit the island every year to stay at its hotels and resorts, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. But 1.6 million visit by cruise.

Its convenient location makes it one of the most popular western Caribbean cruise ports . It also has one of the best shore excursions in the Caribbean at Stingray City and another popular one at the Cayman Turtle Centre.

Seven Mile Beach, which is right by the cruise port, is often named one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. The capital city of George Town has plenty of duty-free shopping.

Where is Grand Cayman?

Grand Cayman is 450 miles directly south of Miami, Forida, and 230 miles west of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Its closeness to Jamaica is one reason why cruise ships often visit both ports in the same trip.

It also is 374 miles east of Cozumel. Shorter western Caribbean cruises often visit either Cozumel and Grand Cayman in one trip or Grand Cayman and Jamaica in another. Longer cruises may visit all three because they are so close together. Together, they are the three most popular destinations in the western Caribbean.

Grand Cayman’s location makes it accessible from Gulf Coast ports such as Galveston, Mobile and New Orleans in addition to the major Florida embarkation ports.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Stingray City easily ranks as one of the top Caribbean attractions and cruise excursions. Visitors boat out to a sandbar and jump into three feet of water with a large school of stingray that have become used to human touch. We had great fun when we did it.

The stingray don’t hesitate to glide within inches—and sometimes rub the legs—of people in the water.

Visitors are usually given snorkeling equipment so they can see the stingray underwater. Guides will sometimes feed the stingray or even pick them up to let visitors see them up close and touch them. This is a great family experience.

It’s also one of the best values among the excursions on a western Caribbean cruise because of the memorable entertainment. Most Stingray City excursions cost between $50 and $75 per person.

Boatswain’s Beach is a 23-acre marine park. It is the home of the Cayman Turtle Centre , which it claims is Grand Cayman’s most popular land attraction. It is eight miles north of the cruise terminal.

It houses a research and educational facility that focuses on the conservation of sea turtles. The facilities also have predators, birds, caiman and other creatures. Visitors can reach the turtle farm by taxi, rental car or excursion bus.

The turtle center plus other attractions such as swimming lagoons, snorkeling, touch pool and nature trail cost about $60 per person.

It also offers a dolphin swim costing around $125 to $150 per person, depending on the program, with discounts for children.

Going to Hell ? If you do visit this village on Grand Cayman, be sure to go to the post office like countless other tourists and send out a postcard to family or friends saying, “I’ve been to Hell.” It is seven miles north of the cruise terminal and near the Cayman Turtle Centre.

A guided Grand Cayman tour that includes Hell, the turtle center and other attractions costs about $70 per person.

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park has 65 acres of displays, walking trail, educational exhibits, a lake and other features. The park’s new $800,000 visitor center is now the first stop on the tour. The two-acre Heritage Garden showcases a restored early 20th-century, three-room, zinc-roofed Caymanian wooden cottage. The Floral Garden displays hundreds tropical and subtropical plants over 2.5 acres.

Beaches Near the Port

Grand cayman cruise port map.

The famous Seven Mile Beach is within walking distance of the cruise docks. Expect heavier crowds by the docks, so either walk farther or take a taxi to more secluded areas. There are many things to do and places to eat.

Most other beaches require access by taxi or rental car. Note that all beaches are public up to the high water mark, even beaches that front hotels and resorts.

The next closest beach to the cruise port is Smith Barcadere , about 1.5 miles south of the cruise terminal at South Sound. It has restrooms, picnic benches, showers and snorkelling.

Governor’s Beach , about three miles north of the cruise terminal, is part of the Seven Mile Beach strip and next to the Governor’s house. Cayman Falls Plaza and Governors Square plaza are by the beach and have shops, restaurants and other services.

For more remote beaches and fewer crowds, try Rum Point (40-minute drive from the docks), Kaibo (40 minutes) or Heritage (30 minutes).

Visitors to the Grand Cayman cruise port can walk off their ships and start shopping and dining right away.

Most Caribbean shopping destinations offer some combination of products you can buy anywhere as well as products that are truly local. George Town is no different.

The Cayman Craft Market on South Church Street is one place to go for many items that are locally produced. The market is a two-minute walk south of the cruise dock. The vendors offer items of leather, thatch, wood and shell as well as traditional Caymanian food.

Cayman Islands shopping

The Farmer’s Market Cooperative is at Stacy Watler Agriculture Pavilion in Lower Valley, known as Market at the Grounds.

It is open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors will find fresh produce, fish, Cayman-made products like Cayman Sea Salt, jams, preserves and hot sauces.

The Tortuga Rum Company offers 10 blends of rums, Taste of the Caribbean sections featuring samples of the Tortuga Rum Cake, Tortuga label gourmet food products and a wide variety of Caribbean speciality foods, coffees, spices and sauces.

Grand Cayman stores accept U.S. or Cayman Island dollars, travelers checks and most major credit cards.

Getting Around / Transportation

Public buses run throughout the island districts. Daily services commence at 6 a.m. and fares start at $1.50 Cayman Island dollars. Licensed buses have blue number plates and accept both U.S. and Cayman Islands dollars.

There are a few bus stops around the island, but buses can be flagged down from the side of the road.

A variety of car rental agencies are available, many of which will provide pickup at the cruise terminal.

Taxis are common at the cruise docks; rates are fixed and should be posted. Most taxis are minivans and often require at least four passengers before leaving. Be sure to ask for a rate before stepping into the taxi.

Weather / Best Time to Go

The best time to visit the Grand Cayman n cruise port is January through April when the average high temperature is about 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall averages less than two inches a month, according to the National Meteorological Service of the Cayman Islands.

April is the best month for warm temperatures and low risk of rain. Historically, it rains only seven days during April, which is the lowest level of any month of the year.

Otherwise, the island has heavier rain for the remaining months. Total rainfall jumps to nearly six inches in May and keeps climbing until it reaches a high point of more than eight inches in September and October.

Our captain will decide when he gets out to the stingray/snorkel areas which snorkel stop to use, based on wind, wave, and tide conditions, as well as on the number of people at each of the two areas. We always try to go to the less populated of the two stops.

Our crew will dive for conch in season and you are welcome to help them. They will even clean up some shells so each family unit who wishes can take one back home with them (supply limited). The rest of the year, you will have extra snorkeling (or Starfish) stop instead of the conch dive.

Rum is the drink of choice, so make sure you try the “Cayman Mama,” a local signature cocktail made with light and coconut rums, banana liqueur, Triple Sec, pineapple juice, and a dash of Grenadine or strawberry syrup. The Best Things To Do In Grand Cayman On A Cruise

W hen going on a Caribbean Cruise, you may find that your ship has a stop at the island of Grand Cayman. This beautiful island, part of the Cayman Islands group of islands, offers gorgeous beaches, fantastic water activities, interesting museums, great marine life, and fascinating history and culture.

I love Grand Cayman so much that I’ve specifically looked for that port of call on the itineraries I’ve booked. It’s a place that I feel I can visit over and over again, with different things to do each time. If your cruise is visiting Grand Cayman for the day, here are the best things to do in Grand Cayman on a cruise.

Disclosure: I have visited Grand Cayman in the past and participated in activities at no cost to me. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Information About Sailing To Grand Cayman

There are three different islands that make up the Cayman Islands. Grand Cayman is the largest Caribbean island of these. Cruise ships stop at George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands. It’s a traditional cruise port area with lots of touristy shops, restaurants, and bars.

Grand Cayman is a tender port. This means that the ship will stay in the water and will not be alongside a dock. You’ll take small boats from the cruise ship to one of three cruise ship terminals.

This is really important to understand when you book an excursion. Because of the unique situation of the tender port, you’ll need to time things properly so you get back with plenty of time.

You won’t have as much control of when you disembark, and may wait in a long line at the end of the day to embark. You may prefer to book an excursion on the ship, where they will handle those details for you.

When I sailed to Grand Cayman (on the Disney Fantasy), they had two separate tender ticket distributions – one for those who were just going ashore, and another for those who had official port excursions booked.

Each cruise line may handle this a little bit differently. So, you’ll want to pay attention to any documentation placed in your stateroom or announcements made. That way, you’ll be prepared since this takes a bit more time.

The Grand Cayman cruise port is a popular cruise port. There are plenty of things to do, and it’s a great place to explore for nature lovers and those who enjoy spending time on the best beaches.

Stingray City

Stingray City is, in my opinion, one of the most unique things to do in Grand Cayman. To visit the Stingray City sandbar, you’ll board a boat that goes right to the area.

These boats usually have an employee on board who can help you interact with the stingrays in their natural environment on the sandbar. They bring along food that you can use to attract the attention of the stingrays by feeding them.

Once you arrive at the sandbar, you’ll notice that the water is quite shallow. Most people can easily stand, so it isn’t too scary for timid swimmers. The stingrays are very friendly, although it’s important that you listen to the employees who will tell you how to proceed safely.

When I’ve taken these excursions, we’ve had the opportunity to purchase photos taken by the staff. Either bring a waterproof camera yourself, or some money to pay for the photos. They only took cash on our excursion, but I’d probably bring both cash and a credit card.

Snorkeling on Grand Cayman

During one of my trips to Grand Cayman, our excursion to Stingray City also included some time to snorkel. The Grand Cayman waters offer some fantastic places to snorkel, where you can see colorful fish, turtles, and coral reefs.

Like Stingray City, this is a place where you may want to consider bringing a waterproof camera. You can get some really fantastic, beautiful photos. While most shore excursions will provide snorkel gear to cruise passengers, be sure to check in advance.

Crystal Caves

Crystal Caves is a relatively new excursion offered in Grand Cayman. If you’ve visited caves in other island destinations, like the Crystal Caves in Bermuda, you’ll find that these are similar.

Because of that, I’d probably recommend going on one of the more unique Grand Cayman excursions, unless you really want to see the caves. They are beautiful, but there are so many other great things to do as well.

The excursion includes three different caves. You’ll have to drive to the caves. While you are able to purchase timed admission on your own, you can usually book an excursion which will take care of the all of the details for you.

Cayman Turtle Centre

The Cayman Turtle Centre (formerly known as the Cayman Turtle Farm) is one of my favorite Caribbean attractions. It’s the largest land-based attraction. It offers lots of family-friendly things to do and can be a fantastic place to spend the day. This is a Cayman Islands Government owned and operated facility.

Activities and attractions at the Cayman Turtle Centre include the following:

  • Sea Turtle Breeding Area
  • Butterfly House
  • Cayman Street (which showcases traditional Cayman homes)
  • Predatory Reef (where you can see sharks and other predators with an underwater viewing panel)
  • Turtle Lagoon (a gentle lagoon area where you can actually swim and snorkel with sea turtles)
  • Breaker’s Lagoon and Turtle Twister Waterslide (the largest freshwater pool in the Cayman Islands where you can swim and cool off)
  • Turtle Wading Pool

If you are purchasing tickets to the Cayman Turtle Centre, you’ll find two separate options for tickets – the Turtle Safari and the Turtle Adventure. I recommend the Turtle Adventure because it also includes access to the turtle and breaker lagoons. You can visit this destination on your own, or book an excursion through the cruise line.

Regardless of how you book, you’ll want to pack bathing suits and dry clothes for your day. We do recommend booking through the cruise line so that you won’t have to worry about the details.

Swim on Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman

Seven Mile Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Grand Cayman, and is absolutely beautiful! It’s one of my favorite beaches ever, with mild waves, white sand, and nice clear blue water. If you just want to enjoy some beach time, an excursion at Seven Mile Beach is a great option.

During our excursion to Grand Cayman, I decided to book a day stay at a hotel we’d already visited on a prior Cayman vacation (the Westin Grand Cayman). Because I was familiar with the island, I felt confident booking on my own.

During our day stay, we had a hotel room and could use the pool and beach throughout the day. It was a great way to get some time on Seven Mile Beach and have the opportunity to shower before returning to the ship.

You’ll also see various Seven Mile Beach excursions offered through the cruise line. That may be a better option if you want the security of being on an official excursion.

Rum Point is a beach area located on the North side of Grand Cayman. It is a bit of a drive, although we’ve been on excursions that included both Rum Point and Stingray City. Rum Point is where the Mudslide drink originated, so you’ll want to try one while you are there.

Since my last visit, Rum Point Beach has had quite a few renovations, expanding some of the food facilities. When I was there, it offered a water sports rental center, a food stand with a bar, changing facilities, and a gift shop. There’s also a restaurant, called Solis Restaurant.

Beach chairs on Rum Point are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Cabanas, day beds, and loungers are available to rent for the day. Coolers or cooler bags are not permitted on the property.

Walk Around the George Town Port

If you don’t have an excursion booked but still want to get off the ship, you can always walk around the port area. Just beyond where you disembark the tender, is the port.

There, you’ll find a variety of different souvenir shops, offering gifts, rum cakes, jewelry, clothing, and more. There are also restaurants, bars, and museums within walking distance. Just remember to keep track of time and leave plenty of leeway to tender back to your cruise ship.

Other Things To Do In Grand Cayman on a Cruise

Depending on your cruise line, you may see some additional excursion options in Grand Cayman. These may include kayaking, a submarine tour, a city tour, glass-bottom boats, scuba diving, cooking classes, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The shops and restaurants near the port are walkable from the cruise terminal where the tender drops you off. If you need transportation for your own excursion, taxis are readily available. There’s also a public bus.

The best way to book cruise excursions is through your cruise line. By doing that, you won’t have to worry about your tender time, and won’t be responsible for transportation. Book your excursions in advance, because there is typically limited availability and you will see the best excursions sell out.

While US dollars are widely accepted, the official currency of the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands dollar (CI$). As a cruise passenger, it’s recommended to just use US dollars instead of exchanging cash.

George Town, Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, an overseas U.K. territory in the Caribbean Sea. Though overfishing virtually eliminated the native turtle population in the 18th century, today the Cayman Turtle Centre on Grand Cayman teaches visitors about conservation efforts as well as offers the chance to see some species of the reptile up close. Wildlife encounters are popular and plentiful on this island; they include snorkeling with stingrays, swimming with dolphins and spying the brightly colored residents of the aptly named Starfish Point beach. A unique photo opportunity can be found on an excursion to Hell, a rock formation comprising a stretch of jagged black limestone peaks. While the idyllic Seven Mile Beach is the place to be for sunbathing and relaxing strolls, adventurous types can discover the island's scenery on horseback, Jet Skis and helicopter tours as well as submarine and glass-bottom boat rides.

Cayman Brac Island is one of the Cayman Islands, located approx 145 km (90 mi) northeast of Grand Cayman Island and only 8 km (5 mi) east of Little Cayman Island . All Cayman Islands are British Overseas Territories (British Crown Colony / Dependencies).

The island is served by the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CYB). Cayman Brac has length of 19 km (12 ml) and width (average) of 2 km (1,2 ml). Population is around 1200, and similar is the number of daily visiting tourists. The island was uninhabited when discovered for the first time in 1503 by Columbus. The name "brac" in Gaelic means "bluff", as "The Bluff" is its fmost prominent feature (see the photo below). This is a rocky outcrop of karstic limestone steadily rising along the island's length towards the east. At the eastern end, The Bluff reaches a height of 43 m (141 ft) above sea level - Cayman Islands' highest elevation point.

Among the most prominent wildlife species found in the surrounding waters are Green Sea Turtle, Howuksbill Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Nurse Shark, Manta Ray, Southern Stingray, Queen Conch (sea snail), Triton's Trumpet, Hermit Crab.

Due to the global Coronavirus crisis, in 2020 (March 31st) the Cayman Islands officially closed borders. The policy also affected cruise ships, which were banned from docking at its ports through January 2022.

  • In July 2021, the Cayman Islands Government announced a 5-phase reopening plan, with January 27, 2022, being the date when all tourists will be allowed to visit the country (without quarantine periods or travel restrictions).
  • The cruise shipping industry effectively ceased operations in the country for 21 months (in the period April 2020 through February 2022).
  • According to FCCA data (Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association), in 2019, Cayman Islands were visited by 2+ million cruise tourists.
