After planning a wedding, sometimes the only thing you want on the itinerary for your honeymoon is plenty of rest and relaxation. That’s why romantic honeymoon cruises are the perfect way to celebrate your newly-wedded bliss, stress-free. All the planning is taken care of for you by the cruise line, which means you can focus your energy on disconnecting from reality and connecting with your special someone. If you’re looking for the ultimate island getaway for couples, choose an itinerary with a stop — or two — at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the newly-reimagined private destination by Royal Caribbean in The Bahamas. Read on to find out why this is the best Caribbean destination for newly-married couples, plus Perfect Day at CocoCay honeymoon tips to help you maximize your time ashore.

THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERY KIND OF COUPLE

Perfect Day Coco Cay Thrill Water Park Cabanas

As far as tropical escapes go, Perfect Day at CocoCay has it all — beautiful white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear turquoise waters. Private shoreside cabanas where you can enjoy frothy piña coladas or crisp sparkling wine delivered straight to your loungers. A luxurious beach club with a private infinity pool and floating cabanas that channel French Polynesia vibes. The Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, where the party never stops. And even a waterpark brimming with white-knuckle slides and exciting rides that are perfect for couples with a taste for adrenaline. Whatever kind of honeymoon experience you’re craving, you’ll find the perfect mix of thrills and amazing ways to chill on this beautiful private island destination by Royal Caribbean.

SHAKE OFF WEDDING STRESS AT CHILL ISLAND ®

Perfect Day Coco Cay Chill Cabanas Couple Floating

If you’re taking a romantic honeymoon cruise to Perfect Day at CocoCay, it helps to know which parts of the island you should definitely fit into the day’s itinerary —especially since there are so many things to see and do. Most couples make a beeline for Chill Island® when they arrive to kick back and soak up the sunshine. This serene stretch of beach along the island’s western coast is the go-to place for tranquil vibes and max relaxation. It’s where you’ll find sand that’s as soft and white as powdered sugar and clear blue waters dotted with colorful coral — plus a floating bar just offshore that’s perfect for cooling down with your favorite tropical drink. There are plenty of complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas available for use on a first-come first-serve basis. But, if you really want to dial up your day with your husband or wife, opt for a daybed or a private cabana at Breezy Bay. If you choose the latter, you’ll enjoy dedicated attendant service all day long, so you can keep the Coco Locos coming strong. You’ll also have your own little slice of paradise all to yourself, including unobstructed views of the calm Caribbean waters. What’s more, there’s a snorkel shack nearby where you can rent equipment and take your romantic beach day beneath the waves. This Perfect Day at CocoCay insiders tips covers the top things to do at Perfect Day at CocoCay, plus helpful pointers like what’s complimentary onshore, what hours each restaurant operates, and when to visit certain attractions around the island to avoid waiting in line.

GET YOUR FILL OF THRILLS AT THRILL WATERPARK

Perfect Day Coco Cay Daredevil Peak Landing Splashing

Some couples choose to spend their honeymoon resting and relaxing, but others like to keep the thrills going strong. If you and your partner are all about fast-paced fun and heart-pounding excitement, you’ll be happy to learn that Perfect Day at CocoCay is also one of the most adventurous honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean. It’s home to Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America at 135 feet, the largest wave pool in the Caribbean, and two towers loaded with high-octane single- and multi-rider slides, including options you can challenge your special someone to — like twin 75-foot drop slides and double open-flume racers. You’ll find them all at Thrill Waterpark , just a few steps from the entrance to the island. Admission to the park is extra, but here’s a little-known honeymoon tip — book a cabana inside Thrill Waterpark and you’ll enjoy complimentary admission for up to eight guests — plus your own private space close to all the action with dedicated attendant service. Ordering food is easy, considering there’s a Snack Shack onsite at the water park, so you never have to leave the area.

JOIN THE PARTY AT OASIS LAGOON

cruise for a honeymoon

You just got married — you should pencil in some time on your honeymoon to celebrate your recent nuptials! And you won’t find a better place to turn up than Oasis Lagoon — the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and also the best party spot in the tropics. If you want to work on your golden honeymoon glow, claim any of the in-water loungers that run along the perimeter of the pool. Or lounge out on any of the lagoon’s three swim-up islands and coves — each is set up with in-water seating. In the afternoons, a DJ keeps the beats coming strong while a team of talented bartenders at the swim up bar hand over ice cold brews, sling tropical drinks, and whip up the island’s signature cocktail, the Coco Loco. Conga lines are known to start up spontaneously near the bar, and dancing is always a given. But while the party at Oasis Lagoon might be nonstop, you can still kick back and relax close by. Treat yourself and your partner in adventure to a private cabana near the lagoon, and escape to total zen whenever you’re craving a break from the action.

LIVE THE LUXE LIFE AT COCO BEACH CLUB

Coco Beach Club Couple Hugging Infinity Pool, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

If there’s one honeymoon tip that should go without saying, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid to do it up after your big day. This trip is all about you and your love, and that’s reason enough to go all out and make each moment truly unforgettable. If you’re looking to really dial up your honeymoon visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay, make sure you add the brand new Coco Beach Club — just steps away from Oasis Lagoon and South Beach — to your list. Coco Beach Club is an exclusive beachside oasis on the island’s north shore where every moment is elevated. Admission to the club includes premium amenities and access to an island-chic restaurant that serves up incredible global flavors, including steak and lobster. Not to mention an expansive infinity pool with wow-worthy views of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. You can even book spa treatments here, like a soothing couples’ massage. Want to take your honeymoon a step further? Turn the luxe factor all the way up and reserve one of the first Floating Cabanas in The Bahamas. Fitted with an overwater hammock that’s big enough for two, a private slide right into the ocean, comfortable loungers, a dining area, and lots of deck space, each floating cabana is spacious enough to accommodate up to eight guests — but if you just want to enjoy yours with your special someone, that’s totally fine, too. You’ll also receive cabana concierge service, so you can keep your slice of paradise stocked with your favorite bottle of celebratory bubbly and order bites from the beach club’s restaurant whenever you feel like snacking on something delicious.

Can you feel the wanderlust yet? Whatever your ideal honeymoon vibe, Perfect Day at CocoCay is all about delivering the best beach day ever to a wide range of visitors. So skip the honeymoon Pinterest boards and all the stress-inducing research that usually goes into planning a big couples’ trip. Romantic honeymoon cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay check all the boxes — from endless ways to recharge and reconnect on pristine white sand beaches, to pulse-pumping thrills, an epic party scene and the most luxurious private island experience in the Caribbean at Coco Beach Club. The best part? You don’t have to worry about planning a single thing.

10 best honeymoon cruises for newlywed bliss

Janice Wald Henderson

After all the wedding hoopla, it can be truly fabulous to celebrate married life with a cruise honeymoon.

Walk the deck hand in hand, admiring scarlet sunsets set against the impossibly turquoise sea. Come morning, indulge in mimosas and waffles on your private veranda as soft ocean breezes caress you with the gentlest, most sensual touch. Later, lounge in a poolside cabana for two, toasting your honeymoon choice with craft cocktails.

For cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

We've done the research to pair 10 fabulous ships with the idyllic destinations that suit them best for a blissful honeymoon cruise.

Read on to find which cruise style and locale are calling your name.

Silver Origin in the Galapagos Islands

cruise for a honeymoon

Perhaps you're a nature-loving, adventuresome duo who thinks the best honeymoon cruise involves exploring unspoiled islands like the Galapagos and meeting the most amazing endemic species close-up. That is, if you can do so in style.

The 100-passenger, environmentally sensitive Silver Origin, a ship purpose-built for the region by Silversea Cruises , ticks all those boxes. The most elegant ship sailing the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador's coast, Silver Origin delivers nature-based exploration from a luxurious home base.

All-suite accommodations, designed in neutral hues with rattan and richly woven furnishings, create an upscale sense of place. Soak away the day snapping pictures of flightless cormorants from your ocean-view bathtub; bonus if you spot a whisker-twitching sea lion.

Your butler — yes, all suite occupants enjoy butler service — is a white-gloved, tuxedo-clad personal pamperer who will happily draw an aromatherapy bath, scatter rose petals and light battery-powered candles to flicker around the tub.

When you can be lured out of your luxurious suite, you can dive deep into Galapagos adventures, exploring several of the 19 UNESCO World Heritage Site islands, including Isla Bartolome and Isabela, with a team of high-energy expedition experts. They'll lead you on riveting explorations via Zodiacs to seek out marine life or on foot to tiptoe close to wildlife, such as blue-footed boobies, scarlet Sally Lightfoot crabs and giant tortoises. The ship's Basecamp, information central for all facts Galapagos, makes learning fun with an interactive wall.

When you're not exploring, there's much to savor on board. Tuck into authentic Ecuadorian cuisine like freshly prepared ceviche and red snapper. Then, learn to make such dishes yourself so you can make them back home as a couple.

Hop on a treadmill in the gym, or refresh your wedding manicure in the beauty salon. For a romantic evening, sip craft cocktails while listening to the Explorer Lounge pianist, or cuddle around the Deck 7 fire pit, watching for meteors shooting across the sky.

Celebrity Ascent in the Eastern Mediterranean

cruise for a honeymoon

Doesn't every honeymooner deserve to feast on a magic carpet? Celebrity Cruises ' 3,260-passenger Celebrity Ascent lets you share a meal or drinks with your new spouse on a cantilevered platform (aptly named the Magic Carpet) that can rise 15 decks above the sea.

If that type of modern, edgy experience is what you crave on your trip of a lifetime, this stunning 17-deck vessel will have you celebrating in a big way. Stroll hand in hand through the reimagined Rooftop Garden, with cantilevered float pools extending over the water's edge. Share a soak in a two-story, martini glass-shaped hot tub.

Foodie couples will surely fawn over Le Voyage, the first at-sea restaurant from superstar chef Daniel Boulud, Celebrity's global culinary ambassador. Boulud promises globally inspired plates like smoked salmon loin with cream of caviar, pickled cucumber and dill in a stunner of an establishment.

And, oh, the Greek islands are made for romance. Fall in love all over again as you stroll on the soft sands of the curvaceous Mykonos shoreline with pelicans swooping above and friendly fishermen tipping their caps to you.

In Santorini, sip local wines, buy island-made ceramics or visit tombs dating to the ninth century (if that's your thing). In Athens, go gaga over the Acropolis and the treasure-filled Acropolis Museum. Explore ancient sites from Celebrity Ascent's berth in Katakolon, Greece, before heading to the beach for sun and sand with your sweetheart.

For the ultimate honeymoon digs, book a suite in The Retreat, a swanky enclave within the ship. Celebrity's newest Retreat introduces an expanded two-story sun deck, a private lounge and the Luminae restaurant starring Boulud's signature dishes.

Retreat dwellers relish the best of both Celebrity worlds: more space and privacy by day, along with Ascent's 32 eateries and buzzy bars at night. (The Martini Bar, in the piazza-style Grand Plaza center, is a cool hangout.) Keep date night going with interactive theater and comedy shows, or dance until dawn to DJ-spun music.

Create a temporary home together in the wellness-leaning AquaClass Sky Suites (with special spa perks) or the Edge Villas, two-story suites with private plunge pools. If you really want to splurge, snag a 1,892-square-foot Iconic Suite with a 689-square-foot veranda. This giant residence ensures that if your in-laws tag along (fine, if they foot the bill), you'd hardly see them.

Wind Surf in the Caribbean

cruise for a honeymoon

Seeking a yacht-like honeymoon where sails billow in the breeze? Pick Windstar 's Wind Surf for mellow Caribbean island-hopping cruises, where turquoise seas are calm and the wind is gentle. Few ships are better meccas for romance than this 342-passenger, five-mast ship. Best of all, the onboard ambience is casual, so packing is a snap.

On such a small ship, expect countless personal touches, from signature bowls of fragrant flowers and fresh fruit in your cabin to the softest Egyptian cotton linens. Crew members learn mighty quickly who's honeymooning — there's nearly one crew member per two passengers — and magically appear when you want service and vanish when you don't. Wind Surf lacks private verandas, but on a ship this small, intimate outdoor spaces are easy to find.

When you're ready to socialize, meet fellow passengers at the alfresco Terrace Bar at the ship's aft, where marvelous martinis are shaken and glasses of Champagne are poured. Afterward, head to dinner in the main restaurant AmphorA, French-inspired Stella Bistro or under the stars at Candles Grill.

The spacious fitness center might beckon, but perhaps you'll like the water sports platform best. Snorkel, water ski, kayak and windsurf. If water and weather conditions align, you're in for total fun. Then, go ashore and lose yourself in the magic of Caribbean isles, each one different from the last.

The European vibes in St. Barts are downright sexy, with nearly everyone speaking French and billionaire yachts bobbing in the azure sea. You'll find shopping and dining as fine as in Paris. St. Maarten lures with pastel-painted shops and authentic Creole restaurants. Find a secluded corner on the powder-soft white sands of Jost Van Dyke, or snorkel amid the most colorful fish imaginable. Don't miss wading through the natural pools at The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Clean up in the WindSpa or the salon, where you can get manicures and pedicures, facials and body wraps. Afterward, book an acupuncture treatment, sure to eliminate any remaining stress from the wedding whirlwind.

Norwegian Prima in Iceland and Northern Europe

cruise for a honeymoon

Iceland's on everyone's bucket list, so why not check that box on your honeymoon? If the weather's chilly, your partner can keep you warm.

Consider this getaway for a summer honeymoon when Norwegian Cruise Line 's 3,100-passenger Norwegian Prima , the first in the line's newest class, sails around Northern Europe.

In Iceland, see active volcanoes and glaciers, hike wildflower-strewn mountains and soak in iconic hot springs. Gawk at the beyond-beautiful fjords in Norway, explore sophisticated Amsterdam and wander the cobbled streets of Bruges, the quaint Belgian city that charms with canals and medieval architecture.

The ship itself embraces an elegance not seen before on typical fun-loving NCL sailings. Norwegian Prima also delivers lots of outdoor deck space, impressive crew-to-guest ratios for a big ship, upgraded cabins and The Haven, NCL's ship-within-a-ship enclave. All 107 Haven suites provide access to an expanded sun deck, a new infinity pool overlooking the ship's wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and a cold room. You even score a 24-hour butler, as well as access to the exclusive Haven restaurant and private lounge.

When you're ready to leave your cabin cocoon, you can roar around Prima Speedway, the first three-level go-kart track at sea. Zoom down The Drop, the first freefall dry slide at sea, or race your spouse on The Rush, which has 10-story-tall dueling, twisting slides.

Or, beeline it to Ocean Boulevard, an outdoor boardwalk wrapping around the entire ship. There, you'll find Indulge Food Hall , Norwegian's first open-air marketplace, where you can savor Texas barbecue, Thai noodles or Spanish-inspired street food, among numerous other choices. Or, Indulge at Just Ice Cream with over-the-top desserts. Go ahead; you already fit into your wedding attire.

Stroll on to find the Infinity Beach area with two pools, the impressive Concourse sculpture garden and the Oceanwalk glass bridges, where you feel as if you're walking on air over the sea. Fleeing an escape room together in the uber-cool Galaxy Pavilion is a fun way to flex your teamwork muscles. There are lots of virtual reality games there, too.

Paul Gauguin in French Polynesia

cruise for a honeymoon

Picture this: white sand beaches, shallow lagoons where multihued fish swim through crystal-clear water, misty mountains and intoxicating breezes scented with tropical flowers.

If this sounds like your ideal "Love Island" (the monogamous version), you should choose French Polynesia for your post-wedding getaway. Besides, all honeymooners deserve a Polynesian blessing ceremony to celebrate the occasion.

Few ships sailing on French Polynesia lure more honeymooners than 330-passenger Paul Gauguin. Now owned by French line Ponant, the luxurious ship (think: South Sea elegance evoked by precious woods, antique engravings and a lagoon-inspired color palate) was renovated in 2021.

Feel the Polynesian atmosphere on board through local art and a virtual museum with more than 150 paintings by the cruise line's namesake, prolific French artist Paul Gauguin, who captured these magical islands in iconic artworks.

No need to rise early for adventure on these voyages — 24-hour room service means dawdling over breakfast, lunch or dinner in bed or on your veranda. (More than 70% of suites and cabins feature private balconies.) Sample cultural cuisine on board — lobster with Tahitian vanilla sauce, anyone? In select cabins and suites, attentive butlers unpack luggage, arrange private cars and make lunch reservations on shore.

Toss to-do lists, and go with the flow. Explore local villages on foot, wander lush rainforests or float as long as you like in blue lagoons. Spend a day on a Paul Gauguin private islet or secluded beach, sipping drinks from coconuts, shaded by palms with baby-soft sand sifting between your toes.

Ready to move? Kayak, snorkel, hit the gym or swim. Dance to live music as stars blanket the sky. Wiggle your hips with Polynesian dancers, and try local crafts. Just when you think the honeymoon can't get any better, a sunset jet boat ride takes it over the top.

Quantum of the Seas in Alaska

cruise for a honeymoon

If you and your shiny new spouse are active types, consider skipping the beach for a bucket-list cruise to Alaska. Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas offers the right mix of thrilling attractions and sophisticated style.

For an adrenaline rush, ride the NorthStar for 360-degree views of Alaska's glaciers and mountainous scenery, or challenge your partner to a race up the ship's rock-climbing wall. You can even learn to fly at the Ripcord by iFLY sky-diving simulator. Bring out your competitive nature at the SeaPlex, where bumper cars, roller skating, basketball and video games await.

When you're ready to relax from the wedding stress, soak your cares away in the adults-only solarium, or cuddle up on the pool deck to watch a movie on the giant LED screen. Or, shake it all off at a rock show in the Music Hall.

Every night is date night on Quantum of the Seas when you reserve a table for two at one of the many specialty restaurants. Do your best "Lady and the Tramp" impersonation at Jamie's Italian by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, experience a whimsical meal made possible by molecular gastronomy at Wonderland or treat yourselves to sushi at Izumi.

Of course, nothing can top the gorgeous backdrop of Alaska itself. For a honeymoon splurge, take a flightseeing tour to the top of a glacier, where you can ride in a dogsled or kayak at the foot of an ice field. Lunch on Alaskan salmon while you toast each other with locally brewed beer. In Victoria, British Columbia, stroll amid brightly colored flower displays at the Butchart Gardens, and ride the carousel as if it's your first date.

Don't forget to take a selfie while watching the sun set as the ship sails away into the Inside Passage. You'll want to savor these moments for years to come.

Disney Wish in the Bahamas

cruise for a honeymoon

For many couples, the idea of honeymooning on Disney Wish with hundreds of children and larger-than-life mice running amok is their worst nightmare. However, for many Disney and Marvel fans, it's a dream come true. Some super fans even choose to get married on board.

The elegant new Disney Cruise Line ship has plenty of spaces where honeymooning couples can get away for grownup entertainment. Take a dip in the infinity pool at the adults-only Quiet Cove sun deck, or find bliss during a couple's massage at the Senses Spa.

You can geek out at the Worlds of Marvel dining experience , or dress up for a gourmet meal at French restaurant Enchante by Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement. After a long morning in bed, an adults-only brunch at Palo will really hit the spot.

For after-hours entertainment, you can bond over your love of "Star Wars" at the Hyperspace Lounge , where you can sip drinks inspired by the moons of Endor or the planet of Coruscant. Or, get a little rowdy at the Keg & Compass Pub over pints of craft beer.

Disney Wish sails three- and four-night cruises to Nassau and Disney's private island of Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. At the latter, you can slip away to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach where you can sunbathe without getting splashed or sprayed with sand by your young shipmates. In Nassau, try snorkeling or deep-sea fishing.

Or, stay on the ship and enjoy the AquaMouse water ride while all the kids are ashore.

Oceania Riviera in the Mediterranean

cruise for a honeymoon

It's rare that the wedding couple gets to really enjoy food at their own nuptials. However, you can make up for lost time on a food-centric cruise on 1,238-passenger Oceania Riviera. Sail around the romantic Mediterranean; no matter which route you choose, you'll come home with gorgeous photos and amazing stories to tell.

Your lengthy getaway of seven to 15 nights will feature a new port nearly every day, so you might need to skip one or two to ensure proper relaxation time as newlyweds. When you're in port, wander together along the cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia; tour the ancient ruins of Rome; or give your sweetie a smooch as you relax on the idyllic beaches of the French Riviera in St-Tropez.

Back on board, treat yourself to afternoon tea for two, an Oceania Cruises tradition. Feed your sweetie finger sandwiches and petit fours as you sip Earl Grey and soak in the scenery. Sip wine and try to create local dishes at a cooking class at Riviera's Culinary Center, or embrace your creativity with an art class led by the ship's artist-in-residence.

The highlight of your cruise will, no doubt, be dinner. With multiple no-surcharge restaurants on board, you'll enjoy fine cuisine together in a different venue practically every night for a week. Share a steak at the Polo Grill, and indulge in rich French fare at Jacques. Bicker over who gets the last bite of lobster pad Thai at Red Ginger one night, and trade tastes of tiramisu and cannoli at Toscana the next.

If the two of you are true connoisseurs, you might sign up for the extra-fee wine-paired dinners at La Reserve by Wine Spectator or an over-the-top gourmet private dining experience at Privee.

Oceania is known for its ultra-comfortable Tranquility Beds; as honeymooners, you're allowed to spend as much time in them as you please. Splurge on a massive Oceania or Vista Suite to take advantage of expanded balconies with hot tubs and in-suite dining tables when you just want to enjoy a meal in private. Can two people fit in a cruise ship bathtub? There's only one way to find out.

SeaDream I in the French and Italian Rivieras

cruise for a honeymoon

The 112-passenger SeaDream I is as yacht-like as small cruise ships come. Laze with your lover on a top-deck Balinese bed, sipping complimentary Champagne. If the bar doesn't have your preferred beverage, let the crew know; they will procure your desired drink in the next port of call.

You'll take most of your meals outdoors, savoring freshly prepared dishes as the ocean breezes caress your skin. Ditch that pre-wedding diet and dig into filet mignon and lobster, or treat your body right with the line's raw food menu at dinner and healthy organic vegetables at lunch.

The crew will make sure you have all your favorite foods, whether that's spoiling you with caviar or keeping your favorite ship-made chili-chocolate ice cream on hand for whenever you wish to order it.

In the right ports, the crew will open up the ship's water sports marina platform, so the two of you can kayak or paddleboard from the ship or lounge on a floating "island." At night, an outdoor movie might be the perfect opportunity to sneak a kiss in the dark.

Additionally, what could be more romantic than days spent in St.-Tropez, France, or Portofino, Italy? Treat yourself to lunch at a winery, or bike to a Mediterranean beach. We promise you won't need your wedding tux to tour Monte Carlo like James Bond (and you certainly won't need it on board, where the vibe is always casual yet upscale).

Scarlet Lady in the Caribbean

cruise for a honeymoon

Looking for a honeymoon cruise that's a little sexy and a bit naughty? A quickie cruise on Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Lady to the Caribbean will surely do it for you.

The rebel cruise line likes to do things a little differently. To start, no kids are allowed on board. It's adults-only, and the entertainment reflects the passenger demographic. Deck yourself out in red for Scarlet Night, or score front-row seats to one of the ship's phenomenal shows, such as "Duel Reality," a modern-day version of "Romeo and Juliet" where two rival "gangs" compete against one another in jaw-dropping feats of balance, strength and acrobatics. Bring your sassy selves to a drag show, or brunch at a mostly vegetarian restaurant, where the menu is divided into "nice" and "naughty."

You could even get matching tattoos right on the ship .

Every meal is a date, whether you're tossing back tequila shots over tacos or grilling your own Korean barbecue. Breakfast might be Japanese, lunch a Hawaiian poke bowl and dinner Italian fare. For dessert, no couple should miss the frozen treats at Lick Me Till ... Ice Cream.

For your honeymoon, you'll want to book at least a Sea Terrace with a private balcony, as it comes with a red hammock for those laid-back sea days. If you're feeling flush, treat your VIP selves to Rockstar Quarters, suites that each offer more space, an in-room bar and access to an exclusive sun deck area.

The ship sails short (less than a week) cruises to the Bahamas. On Bimini, Virgin guests have private access to the Bimini Beach Club for all the sunbathing they can fit into a day — no need to worry about tan lines now that wedding photos are done.

Best Honeymoon Cruise Lines

Royal caribbean.

royalcaribbean.com

Royal Caribbean International has some of the world’s most fun and innovative ships and it will always be one of the best honeymoon cruise lines.

The first thing to mention is that, despite the name, they don’t just cruise Caribbean destinations !

They have many beautiful itineraries on their honeymoon cruises. They go to the top-rated honeymoon destinations in the world, but honestly, it’s hard to tear yourself away from the ship because of the sheer number of fun things to do onboard.

From surfing to rock climbing to bumper cars, there are so many fun things to do on a Royal Caribbean cruise . There’s also a vast array of places to wine and dine!

While Royal Caribbean are extremely family-friendly , don’t let that put you off choosing this cruise line.

It’s still one of the best honeymoon cruises with ample adult-only areas like the beautiful Solarium area, meaning that they’re perfect for a honeymoon, too!

We’d recommend the Oasis Class and Quantum Class ships, as these are the biggest and best with the most amenities and dining options on board.

While their older ships don’t have as many bells and whistles, they do have some interesting itineraries that are worth considering when you’re searching for the best honeymoon cruises.

Older ships can be excellent value if you’re on a tighter budget, too. Royal Caribbean has a new cruise ship launching almost every year .

Icon of the Seas is launching late January 2024 and will be the biggest ship in the world under RC’s new Icon class of ship.

Utopia of the Seas will join in summer 2024 and join the incredible line up of Oasis class ships.

Cabin Types

The entry-level room / cabin type is called Interior Stateroom.

If budget allows, we’d recommend at least an Ocean View Stateroom, which has a porthole window.

However, for a honeymoon, a balcony is very desirable as it will give you more space and a beautiful view. On some newer ships, you have private balconies looking in on the interior of the ship.

These are called Neighbourhood Balcony Staterooms and Central Park Balcony Staterooms, which can be great value compared to Ocean View Balcony Staterooms .

On some newer ships, you’ll also find innovative Virtual Balcony Staterooms.

We love the Royal Suites with upgraded VIP extras across 3 tiers – choose between Sea, Sky & Star class for the ultimate in Royal Caribbean luxury.

Dining & Drinking

Royal Caribbean is renowned for extensive and innovative dining options . Included as standard are all meals and snacks.

For breakfast and lunch, you have high-quality buffet restaurants. For dinner, you will dine in the main dining room.

However, there are also many speciality restaurants to try which incur an extra cost. You can purchase speciality dining packages which we’d strongly recommend for foodie couples.

From sushi to steakhouses to seafood – you’ll be in heaven with the culinary delights you can find. It’s one reason Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines.

Drinks are not included in your base cruise price, but you can add on drinks packages (including non-alcoholic packages and premium alcoholic drink packages) to your online Cruise Planner on the Royal Caribbean website before you embark.

If purchasing an alcohol drinks package, you must purchase for all passengers in your cabin (i.e. no buying one drinks package and sharing)

Don’t feel you have to purchase a drinks package. If you’re not huge consumers of alcohol, it may not be the best value for you!

Other spending

Gratuities / Tips can be included at the time of booking.

Wi-Fi, excursions and spa services cost extra but can be included in a package with drinks and other extras prepaid after you book online with Royal Caribbean’s handy Cruise Planner.

Onboard activities

While facilities and amenities vary from ship to ship, let’s use Odyssey of the Seas as an example.

You can go on a skydive simulator and surf simulator, play laser tag, have a go at the rock-climbing wall, bumper cars, bungee trampoline, enjoy two pools with hammocks and sun loungers, Las Vegas-style shows, silent discos and of course, the casino!

Royal Caribbean Honeymoon Cruises We Love

We love this 9-night Greek Isles honeymoon cruise from Rome on Odyssey of the Seas with some honeymoon highlights like Capri and the Amalfi Coast and islands like Santorini and Mykonos

This 7-night Western Caribbean honeymoon cruise from Miami on the brand new Icon of the Seas taking in Mexico with a stop in the Bahamas.

Virgin Voyages

virginvoyages.com

The newest kid on the block, courtesy of Richard Branson. We can only describe Virgin Voyages ‘ honeymoon cruises as adult-only playgrounds.

Traditionally, adult only cruises would attract an older cohort, closer to retirement age than just-married age (forgive us for generalising here!) but Virgin Voyages are turning cruising upside down with 21st-century honeymoon cruise ships.

It really is one of the most innovative honeymoon cruise lines. For entertainment, think of a festival at sea!

For foodies, there are 20+ places to eat (with no buffets). A 24/7 diner, Michelin-starred chefs curating the menus , mixologists and drinks to suit all budgets.

If you love to move, you’ll be in heaven with a Technogym equipment and scheduled training camps. They even have a tattoo parlour onboard. We’re kinda obsessed!

The cabins on Virgin Voyages’ ships, Scarlett Lady & Valiant Lady , are bright and contemporary, which is why we think it’s one of the best honeymoon cruise lines.

You have Insider cabins or Sea View cabins for couples on a budget. Upgrade to a Sea Terrace and you’ll find a cute hammock on your private balcony.

Go all out with a RockStar Quarters or Mega RockStar Quarters with big balconies, hammocks , marble bathrooms and exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop. Taking honeymoon cruises to the next level.

Steakhouse, Korean BBQ, Mexican, Hawaiian, Italian? Virgin Voyages include all 20+ eateries in your cruise fare, another reason we think it’s one of the best honeymoon cruise lines.

Essential drinks (i.e. water, soft drinks, tea and coffee) are included as standard.

For alcoholic drinks, you can pay as you go or purchase a Bar Tab before boarding which you can spend how you like. Drink prices start relatively reasonably, with beers from $6 and cocktails from $9.

Gratuities / Tips, Wi-Fi and fitness classes are included. Besides alcoholic drinks, expect to pay extra for any shore excursions and spa treatments.

Both Scarlett Lady & Valiant Lady are almost identical, so you’ll find the same features on both ships.

They modeled the Aquatic Club pool deck on a mega-yacht . The Redemption Spa has a thermal suite with a mud room and salt room.

By night is where Virgin Voyages comes alive with the most innovative entertainment – late-night cabaret by a sexologist , elaborate circus shows, modern dance and absurdist nightclub shows .

The entertainment on Virgin Voyages makes it one of the most unique honeymoon cruise lines!

We love The Manor with its ‘moody and sexy 70s punk vibe’. The entrance alone will have you living your Studio 54 dreams .

Virgin Voyages Honeymoon Cruises We Love

We love this 15-night Australia, Bali & Singapore honeymoon cruise. Take an epic voyage from iconic Sydney along Australia’s east and north coast, stopping at the stunning Whitsunday Islands, Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef and Darwin, before hopping to Bali and end with a couple of days exploring Singapore.

Or, try this shorter 5-night Caribbean honeymoon cruise taking in the Dominican Republic and Bahamas from Miami.

Celebrity Cruises

celebritycruises.com

Luxurious and adult-orientated contemporary ships with top-class dining, we love honeymoon cruises on Celebrity Cruises .

The restaurants and bars are chic and sophisticated, with menus crafted by a Michelin-starred chef.

On their latest ships, interior designers like Kelly Hoppen & Nate Berkus oversaw the interiors. Celebrity is truly one of the best honeymoon cruise lines.

Celebrity Cruises are also ideal for LGBTQ+ honeymoons with their annual Pride Party At Sea .

We’re obsessed with the innovative Edge class of ships. Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond and the latest ship to launch, Celebrity Ascent have features like the Magic Carpet .

This is a floating platform that can move up and down at the side of the ship, creating a different ambience depending on the deck it’s on!

Celebrity Cruises have all the typical accommodation options, including Inside Stateroom, Ocean View Staterooms and Veranda Staterooms.

You can also find the upgraded Concierge Class and one of our favourites, Aqua Class , for more space and personalised service.

The cabins will vary from ship to ship but the Edge Class cabins are slightly bigger. If you want to go all-out (it is your honeymoon after all!) opt for a suite with your own dedicated butler .

Celebrity is one of the best honeymoon cruise lines for luxurious decadence!

Celebrity Cruises has some fantastic dining options, including culinary workshops for food and wine connoisseurs.

For general eating and drinking, you have the buffet-style Oceanview Cafe plus the main dining room. On the Edge Series of ships, you’ll have the choice of 4 complimentary restaurants, ideal for a romantic dinner.

You’ll spend a little more on speciality restaurants like Tuscan Grille and Murano (which are worth it!).

Celebrity Cruises have an ‘all included’ upgrade which you can opt for at the time of booking, which includes their Classic Drinks package and Wi-Fi .

The fact that you can make it all-inclusive is one reason we think it’s amongst the best honeymoon cruise lines.

There are other drinks packages you can add on or upgrade to, like wine packages and premium drinks packages.

While you can book a ‘cruise only’ fare, we’d recommend going with the ‘All Included’ upgrade mentioned above to include drinks + Wi-Fi so you don’t have to worry too much about the bill at the end of your voyage.

Tips, shore excursions and spa treatments are not included , but you can book on their handy online Cruise Planner before travel.

While facilities and amenities vary from ship to ship, let us use Celebrity Beyond as an example. This ship is all about sophisticated spaces for discerning couples.

There are so many areas to explore, including the floating platform, The Magic Carpet , the adults-only Solarium , the casino and beautiful bars like the Sunset Bar and The Club.

Celebrity Cruises Honeymoon Cruises We Love

We love this beautiful 9-night Caribbean honeymoon cruise on the brand new Celebrity Ascent, taking in Caribbean highlights like Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire with a few days at sea to enjoy this magnificent ship.

Or check out this 10-night Italy, Greece, Croatia & Montenegro honeymoon cruise on Celebrity Beyond with some lesser discovered European stops included.

Norwegian Cruise Line / NCL

NCL is another of our favourite honeymoon cruise lines, with a vast array of amenities and gorgeous itineraries on their honeymoon cruises.

NCL are pioneers of freestyle dining , dispensing with the traditional dining of old with set sit-down times.

You can go all-inclusive with ‘free-at-sea’ including premium drinks , speciality restaurants and dining including.

Like most of the fun honeymoon cruise lines, NCL is family-friendly but they have plenty of adult-only spaces, too.

With epic itineraries (including one that cruises Hawaii all year, Pride of America ) you won’t be short of fabulous and fun options for honeymoon cruises.

If budget allows, consider The Haven with its fantastic adult-only deck. The Breakaway, Breakaway Plus , and Prima class of ships are newer, so go with one of these ships if possible.

Like other honeymoon cruise lines, you can find a range of cabins on NCL.

From Inside (no window), to Oceanview (porthole window) and Balcony staterooms.

They also have Spa Suite Cabins and our favourite The Haven, at the top of the ship with butler service and a private sundeck.

NCL includes as standard all meals and snacks. For breakfast and lunch, you have great buffet restaurants. For dinner, you will dine in the main dining room.

We really recommend exploring the speciality restaurants , for which you pay a supplement. Japanese, BBQ, Italian, seafood, steakhouse – you’ll find all of these onboard.

NCL is one of the best honeymoon cruise lines for food options.

You can include gratuities at the time of booking.

We’d recommend opting for ‘ Free At Sea’ upgrade , which includes premium drinks, Wi-Fi and speciality dining, plus a discount on excursions. Spa treatments are extra.

While facilities and amenities vary from ship to ship, let’s use Norwegian Prima as an example – with the most outdoor space of any ship in the world , you won’t be short on finding a spot to relax.

The deck is beautiful and we love the infinity hot tubs . There is a 10 deck water slide and tidal wave water slide for water lovers. You’ll also find bumper cars and mini golf.

By night, explore the virtual reality theatre, Broadway-style shows and a Las Vegas-style nightclub!

NCL Honeymoon Cruises We Love

We love this 16-day Transatlantic honeymoon cruise, which starts in Europe and ends in the Caribbean and has some fascinating stops, like Morocco & Cape Verde on the brand new ship Norwegian Viva.

This 11-day Northern Europe honeymoon cruise from London (Southampton) via Norway to Iceland is unique. Spend a few days exploring England before hopping onboard, stopping in Amsterdam & Brussels before voyaging through Norway for the magnificent fjords and ending up in Iceland.

Or consider this 7-day Alaska honeymoon cruise on Norwegian Bliss. Witness the magnificent Endicott Arm Fjord & Dawes Glacier and you can hug a husky on a shore excursion!

NCL norwegian cruise lines honeymoon cruise at sea

Other Honeymoon Cruise Lines

Choosing the best honeymoon cruise lines can be a little overwhelming with so many ships sailing around the world.

If you love the idea of a Royal Caribbean cruise , then you may have noticed that Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is quite similar.

Planning a honeymoon without breaking the bank ? Then consider Carnival Cruises or MSC Cruises .

If you’re thinking Carnival Cruise Line or MSC, opt for their newer ships and upgraded cabins for more luxury .

If you like the sound of Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises are fantastic (albeit a little more traditional than Celebrity). Holland America Line is another more traditional style cruise line.

Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas , Oceania Cruises , Azamara Club Cruises and legendary luxury cruise line, Cunard , are ideal for couples looking for something smaller and more upscale.

These cruise lines offer a more traditional cruising experience and are renowned for their fine dining and extensive wine lists.

Entertainment and activities are more low-key than on some of the honeymoon cruises by bigger mega-liner ships. However, you will find all the typical features of a cruise ship, including shows, casino, spa and pool deck.

The honeymoon cruises on these cruise lines are all about the destinations, too.

The ships sometimes take you to smaller ports that the big ships can’t go to. This means getting to go to some of the world’s most romantic spots rather than big city ports of call.

Perfect for couples looking for something more intimate, who don’t care about bells and whistles like water slides and who want to dive deeper into some incredible destinations!

One thing to note is that at this ultra luxury end of the cruise market, the age profile of guests is often a lot older than the average age of couples getting married and planning a honeymoon cruise.

Now, we believe age is just a number , but it’s worth noting that the atmosphere on these ships is more classic.

If you’re looking for a livelier vibe , opt for the other honeymoon cruise lines we’ve mentioned, like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, NCL and Virgin Voyages, which attract a broader range of ages, to varying degrees!

Want to do something different to the big ocean liners?

Consider the small-ship yachts of Windstar Cruises or Paul Gauguin Cruises who have magnificent Pacific Island itineraries sailing to dream honeymoon destinations like Bora Bora in French Polynesia .

Consider a cruise on Disney . Disney Cruise Line is not just for families if you want to live our your fairytale fantasies, they might be the one for you!

So many honeymoon cruises and honeymoon cruise lines, so little time!

Cruise Seasons – Best Time To Cruise

You may be tied to specific dates for your honeymoon but knowing the best time to cruise in your dream destination is crucial so you have not just a great time, but the best time!

Destination, weather patterns, pricing? Here’s a quick guide on the ideal time for a honeymoon cruise.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean

A perennial favourite (who doesn’t love the white sandy beaches and laid back island vibes!), you can find a myriad of honeymoon cruise options in the Caribbean year round, sailing from North America.

However, the best time to plan a honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean is from December to April during the dry season .

From May to October is officially ‘hurricane season’ although later in the season, from September to early November are the riskiest months.

It’s worth noting that with modern weather technology, there is no safety risk to cruise during hurricane season but you can experience some rain. However, these months are the cheapest time to cruise the Caribbean.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean

Some budget cruise ships sail the Mediterranean in winter even though it’s cold. However, the best time to plan a honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean is between May and early October .

These months guarantee sun-kissed days and balmy evenings, perfect for exploring coastal towns, ancient ruins and cute seafront restaurants.

Late June to August is the peak of the tourist season and it is crowded and hot in Europe, including in ports so consider outside of these months for a more relaxed experience.

While some honeymoon cruise lines sail Europe from early April to late October, the tail end of the seasons the sea can be a bit colder and towns are quieter so it’s best for a more cultural honeymoon.

A Med cruise is the perfect way to see multiple countries, can’t decide between Italy and Greece ? Then a cruise is a great way to get a taste of both!

Best time to cruise Alaska

Cruise season in Alaska is from May to September . The peak months are late June to August, and we’d recommend this time, as it the temperatures are warmer and the days longer.

Best time to cruise Hawaii & the Pacific

You can cruise Hawaii year round but the best time to cruise the Hawaiian islands is from April to June and September to October.

For islands like Bora Bora in French Polynesia and Fiji, May to October offers dry, cooler weather, making it idyllic for beach activities and exploration.

Best time to cruise Asia

Asia is vast and varied, has different optimal times. the best time to cruise Southeast Asia is from November to March during the dry season.

For Japan, cruises sail from April to October . However, we can’t think of a more romantic setting, than wandering around Japan during cherry blossom season so consider April (or autumn foliage in October is really cool to see to, too).

Best time to cruise Australia & New Zealand

Let’s take you Down Under. The best time to cruise Australia is from October to April, aligning with their summer.

Although, Queensland and the northern states are in the midst of their rainy season from January to March , so earlier or later than these months is best.

In New Zealand, the best time to cruise is from December to March .

Honeymoon Cruise Tips

  • Book a night or two before your honeymoon cruise near the port. Not only will you get to enjoy a beautiful port city, but if there is a delay, you won’t be worried and stressed about making it on your cruise.
  • If you can afford it, book a balcony (or even better, a suite). Ideal for some quiet romantic moments and quality time away from the eyes of fellow passengers.
  • Pre-book your shore excursions . If you prebook, you won’t be disappointed that trips to the most popular destinations are sold out. Plus, if you’re travelling immediately after your wedding, no doubt you’ll be exhausted, so having things booked before travel means you’ll drag yourself away from the ship to see some magical honeymoon destinations!
  • Pre-book dining to ensure you get a romantic seat for two (unless you’re sociable, of course, and don’t mind sitting with others).
  • To avoid sea sicknesses , be up on deck in the fresh air when the ship pulls out of port (particularly good advice if you’ve had an alcoholic welcome drink!)
  • Look out for sales Many cruise lines have sales throughout the year. Look out for summer sales, black Friday sales, January sales. You can get cabin upgrades, onboard spending credit that you can use for excursion credits, speciality restaurants, couples massage and other onboard spending.
  • Book early-ish Unlike flights (which as a general rule of thumb, you’re able to book 10-11 months in advance), you can usually book a cruise 18-24 months in advance so you can book right up to 2025 right now . However, even 11 months in advance should be plenty of time unless you have your eye on a unique cabin
  • Honeymoon Celebration Packages . Most cruises charge extra for romance packages but they can be a lovely treat on arrival with chocolate-dipped strawberries and champagne. It is a special occasion after all!
  • Always prepay gratuities / tips if they’re not already included, so you don’t have to faff around looking for cash to tip all the time.
  • DIY vs booking with Travel Agent . So we know the pull of arranging a DIY honeymoon but for couples who want to work with a travel expert, the good news is that all the honeymoon cruise lines mentioned work with reputable travel agents. Not only will a great travel agent or tour operator know about the best honeymoon cruise package offers and the best routes, but you have someone to manage all the ins and outs of your honeymoon , too! If you prefer to book DIY, we highly recommend checking out the honeymoon packages with Cruise Direct . Not only can you search all the the best honeymoon cruises in one place , but you’ll see they have discounts and added honeymoon extras you won’t find anywhere else ! Plus, importantly, Cruise Direct have a price guarantee – if the price of your cruise drops after you book, they will readjust the rate for you!

By Suzie Dundas, Kieran Meeke

puerto rico - best honeymoon destinations in the caribbean

  • Find a Cruise

The best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean perfectly blend romance, outdoor adventure, and tropical beaches. Newlywed couples have no shortage of activities to choose from during their Caribbean island honeymoon, including fantastic scuba diving in Cozumel, chocolate-making classes in St. Lucia, and idyllic stretches of sand in the Bahamas.

For those looking to plan their first unforgettable trip as a married couple, here are some of the best Caribbean islands for a honeymoon.

St. Kitts and Nevis

Aerial view of Cockleshell Bay's shoreline

Cockleshell Beach, St. Kitts

The islands of St. Kitts and Nevis have the smallest population of any country in the Western hemisphere. Its laidback and intimate nature is why many people consider it one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean.

Here, you’ll have no shortage of beaches to choose from. You might want to visit Cockleshell Beach, one of the best beaches in St. Kitts , which features sandy shores, shallow waters, and open-air beach bars.

Or if you want a more indulgent beach experience, head to the Carambola Beach Club, which offers everything you need for a low-stress day at the beach, including kayaks, sunbeds, loungers, and a highly rated beach bar and restaurants.

Couple looking at the lush scenery of Mount Liamuiga

Mount Liamuiga, St. Kitts

St. Kitts is one of the best Caribbean islands for adventure . Take a hike through the jungle and enjoy the view from the top of Mount Liamuiga or go deep-sea fishing at St. Kitts Bay. If you’re longing to get in the water, plan a half-day snorkeling trip on the shoreline around the capital city of Basseterre or swim with dolphins in a lagoon fed by natural seawater.

If you prefer your adventures on land, you have plenty of romantic options, too. Some of the best things to do in St. Kitts include arranging a seaside lunch on the sand set to the sounds of a five-piece Caribbean steel band, enjoying a local rum tasting in town, or hopping aboard a catamaran and cruising by local fishing villages as you sip a freshly-made rum punch.

Puerto Rico

Couple riding an ATV in El Yunque Rainforest

El Yunque Rainforest, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean. Start your honeymoon in El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the United States, which offers various activities for both hikers and non-hikers, like zipline tours, birdwatching, and scenic walks along well-maintained paths to a jungle waterfall.

Beach in Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve

Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve, Puerto Rico

Paddle your way through Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve and embark on a one-of-a-kind kayak trip around a bioluminescent bay with glow-in-the-dark plankton that light up the water.

Couples who love learning about Caribbean culture will have plenty to fill their days in San Juan, too, including a walking food tour of the historic Old Town, tours, and cocktail mixing classes at the world-famous Casa Bacardi Distillery, and gentle cycling tours past historical sites.

With cobblestone streets and pastel-colored historical buildings, Downtown San Juan offers romance at every turn. Dip into one of its charming restaurants and cozy up with a glass of Puerto Rican rum on the rocks at a wrought-iron table for two.

Amazing rock formations inside Harrison's Cave

Harrison’s Cave, Barbados

If you want an active Caribbean island honeymoon, head to Barbados , a jungle island with lush, dramatic ecosystems, both above and below the water.

Couples can take a day trip to Harrison’s Cave, a picturesque system of caverns, where you’ll see underground streams, waterfalls, and tropical pools, plus thousands of fantastic stalagmite and stalactite formations.

Turtle swimming in Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay, Barbados

If you rather spend your honeymoon in the sunshine, hop aboard a catamaran cruise to Turtle Bay, where you can swim and snorkel with sea turtles before you cruise back along the shoreline and enjoy refreshing Caribbean cocktails with an unbeatable view.

If you’re both nature lovers, book a ride in an open-air 4×4 vehicle through the Barbados Wildlife Preserve, which is home to the rare green monkey that Barbados is known for .

Extra-romantic experiences on this honeymoon destination in the Caribbean include champagne sunset cruises, tours around the best beaches in Barbados , or chatting with expert rum makers as you sample the goods at the Mount Gay Rum factory.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

R.M.S. Rhone Shipwreck in Tortola

R.M.S. Rhone, Tortola

Once the pirate capital of the world, Tortola is famous for its shoreline coves, mountain peaks, and lush bays that once provided shelter for the ocean’s most feared raiders.

Today, there’s no shortage of adventure in the area. If you’re a certified scuba diver, explore the 310-foot-long R.M.S. Rhone, a shipwreck from the 1800s that’s surprisingly intact and features many historical artifacts in the stern.

Rock formation and turquoise waters at The Baths

Virgin Gorda Baths, Tortola

If you’re not scuba certified, you’ll also find some of the world’s best snorkeling near the Virgin Gorda Baths, a series of natural pools filled with colorful marine life and surrounded by a soft sand beach.

There’s also excellent snorkeling on Norman Island, the supposed site of buried pirate treasure and the inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” which is a quick boat ride from Tortola.

While Tortola isn’t large, there is a lot to explore inland. Opt for a 4×4 tour of the island’s peaks or take a seat in an open-air bus through the British Virgin Island’s countryside and learn about the island’s history while admiring its iconic viewpoints along the way.

Set your compass towards St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, an elegant and romantic destination that is also unassuming and welcoming.

St. Croix’s beaches are world-class and honeymooners should spend at least one afternoon lounging under an oversized umbrella on the sand.

Buck Island is one of the best beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands because of its stunning underwater snorkel trail, which leads you in a loop through coral grottos.

Underwater signs at this protected national monument help guide you through a picturesque route and provide information about the fish, coral, and marine life along the way.

Seven Mile Beach, one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

The largest of the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman is well-known for having healthy coral reefs and clear blue water. The island is quite popular with snorkelers, but fantastic beaches like Seven Mile Beach and White House Beach have made it a hot spot for sun-worshipers, too.

Spend at least one day of your Caribbean island honeymoon at Seven Mile Beach, one of the best beaches in the Caribbean . Expect sparkling blue water, impossibly soft sand, and no shortage of beach bars and activity operators, in case you want to cool down with a cocktail or rent a kayak for two.

People on a boat in Stingray City

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

For a unique vacation idea for couples that will elicit wonderful honeymoon photos, visit Stingray City, a sandbar just off the coastline, where you’ll find dozens of stingrays in water only a few feet deep. Stand or snorkel with these elegant and friendly creatures that are used to interacting with humans nearby. Some might even allow you to pet them as they gently swim by.

For a quirky honeymoon activity, head to “Hell,” a town named after its unique rock formations that resemble flames rising from the bottom of the earth. Once you’ve snapped a few Instagram photos from Hell, continue to beautiful sites like the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park or the Pedro St. James National Historic Site, where you can book an oceanview rum tasting for two.

St. Lucia, one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean

St. Lucia offers the best of both worlds: dramatic peaks, coastline, and terrain, plus easy access to fantastic beaches with gentle waves and healthy marine life. It’s one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean because couples can mix both experiences, choosing to snorkel during the day, enjoy a gourmet chocolate-making class in the afternoon, and end the evening while relaxing at a luxury cliffside retreat.

Chocolate making process at the Howelton Estate

Howelton Estate, St. Lucia

Foodie couples who are all about experiencing new tastes and foods can sign up for Caribbean cooking classes, where you’ll participate in everything from choosing the best fresh herbs to enjoying a farm-to-table Caribbean meal. You can also visit the cocoa estate of Howelton Estate and learn all the ways to use cocoa in everything from gourmet chocolate to drinks and food.

Natural sites on St. Lucia include jungle waterfalls, fishing and rainforest villages, and the towering volcanic spires of the Pitons, home to some of the best hiking in the Caribbean . Active couples can explore all of these on foot, but most travelers opt to take driving tours and trolley rides around the island’s sites.

Dominica, one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean

Dominica is known for being extremely welcoming to tourists, making it one of the best Caribbean islands for first timers . Start your honeymoon at Champagne Beach, a shallow, soft beach that is the home of Champagne Reef, where there’s an underwater spring that slowly bubbles warm water up to the surface. Take a dip here and feel like you’re swimming in a glass of champagne—hence the name.

Lush landscape of Trafalgar Falls

Trafalgar Falls, Dominica

Near Champagne Beach, there are several other gorgeous outdoor sites like Trafalgar Falls, with hot and cold swimming pools, and Emerald Pool, which is accessed through an easy 20-minute walk.

Another one of the best things to do in Dominica for couples is to take a river float through the jungle that begins in the Hibiscus Eco-Village, where you’ll slowly float on a large innertube and encounter some fun mini-rapids during the journey. Be sure to pose for some photos together at Hibiscus Falls, one of the more than 300 waterfalls found on the island.

Beautiful beach in Aruba

Beach in Aruba

If all you want on your honeymoon is idyllic beaches, then Aruba might be perfection. Eagle and Palm beaches on Aruba are two of the most photographed in the Caribbean.

Indeed, with its white sand, clear water, and photogenic trees, Eagle Beach is one of the most romantic beaches anywhere. Palm Beach, one of the best beaches in Aruba , is much livelier and busy with water sports.

At the private Renaissance Island, reached by a short boat ride, you’ll find the famed Flamingo Beach. These colorful gangly birds create a unique background for honeymoon photos.

ATV adventure in Aruba

ATV in Aruba

However, there’s much more to Aruba than beaches. Arikok National Park is a protected area of desert, coastline, and unique rock formations.

Among these varied landscapes, you can enjoy being together on a hike, on horseback, or on a 4×4 adventure. Take in the natural beauty of Aruba, while keeping an eye out for iguanas basking in the sun.

Aerial view of California Lighthouse, Aruba

California Lighthouse, Aruba

Another romantic spot on a honeymoon in Aruba is the California Lighthouse with its isolated setting on the island’s northwest point. Enjoy memorable views from the lighthouse along the coast and across the island.

There are more romantic views of the island to share at the Casibari Rock Formations near Aruba’s center. Climb the path up these unique boulder formations to see as far as Venezuela on a clear day.

Colorful street in Oranjestad, Aruba

Oranjestad, Aruba

This time, let Carnival take care of the little details that made the first time great: wine, music, wedding cake and more are included, with options for open bar and even more guests. Practical Tips for Planning Your Cruise Honeymoon

Ask for a honeymoon package on your cruise.

honeymoon cruise

It never hurts to ask, so we recommend calling the cruise line or booking directly for the best honeymoon cruise packages. You’d be surprised how many great honeymoon cruise deals you can find along the way.

Which Cruise Line is best for a Honeymoon? It’s tough to say, as so many cruise lines have perfected the art of hospitality and helping you celebrate your big day. Many even have honeymoon registries for your friends and family to pitch in for drinks or entertainment.

But we think the honeymoon packages by Princess are hard to beat. Prices start at $299 and include spa time, champagne, and a balcony breakfast.

Ready to book? We don’t blame you.

Look for Honeymoon Cruises with All-Inclusive Deals

Sky Princess Cruise

It’s not just honeymooners that can take advantage of significant savings with all-inclusive cruise packages.

Finding great honeymoon cruise deals can also happen when you book your dining and drinks with the price of your room. So look at all-inclusive options when you plan your honeymoon at sea.

Pick a Departure Point You Prefer

Sky Princess Cruise

Because cruise ports are always on the water (let us know if you find one that’s not), you’ll want to research what city you’re docking in and out of.

Pick a location that’s easy for you to fly in and out of, or better yet – one you can drive to if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea.

Come up With a Game Plan

Sky Princess Cruise

A cruise honeymoon is one of a kind. It’s unique because you can pack in so many activities on and off the boat.

Come up with a few ideas about what you want to fit in before you leave. We suggest looking at the cruise itinerary and amenities before boarding, so you can discuss a few items that you can’t miss.

Everything You Need to Know About Booking a Honeymoon Cruise

Here's what to consider when honeymooning on the water, according to travel experts.

cruise for a honeymoon

David C Tomlinson / Getty Images

By the time you’ve finalized your wedding’s guest list, figured out your menu, and fronted all your deposits, you may not really have the energy or brain power to plan all the details of a honeymoon vacation. Some couples may find it most relaxing to choose something uncomplicated, where the itinerary is already booked for you—like a romantic cruise. “The last thing most couples want to do is coordinate a complicated honeymoon after planning a wedding,” shares Karen Thomas, senior director of brand marketing and external communications at Seabourn , a luxury cruise line. “A cruise makes things easy as your accommodations, meals, activities, and entertainment are all taken care of with a few clicks of a keyboard or a phone call to a travel agent who can help plan your trip.”

In addition to that, couples can look forward to getting a significant amount of sightseeing in while maintaining one home base (no hotel hopping, no packing up your bags every few days). “There’s something to be said about never having to worry about travel hassles like getting from Point A to Point B, or how to decipher train schedules in another language—an excellent first married fight said no one ever!” says Dianna Rom, Vice President of Sales for Windstar Cruises . “Plus, you won’t have to waste any time checking in and out of hotels and you don’t need to unpack and pack a suitcase multiple times.”

Not only will the consistent home base provide that sense of home-away-from-home, but couples will truly have their pick of romantic destinations when choosing the best cruise line for their ideal vacation. Some dreamy examples: A Uniworld French river cruise begins in Paris, then takes guests through the French countryside to explore chateaus, the gardens of Monet, and D-Day’s Normandy beaches. Windstar sails to some of the world’s most romantic places, including Tahiti and the Tuamotu/Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, while Virgin Voyages offers honeymooners amorous journeys from Tuscany to Ibiza. And there are a lot more.

Sounds downright dreamy, right? Ahead, find advice from travel experts about how to navigate booking the honeymoon cruise of a lifetime, from choosing a destination and cruise line to considering things like budget, adults-only experiences, and more.

Meet the Expert

  • Karen Thomas is the senior director of brand marketing and external communications at Seabourn , a luxury cruise line.
  • Brad Ball is a media spokesperson for Silversea cruises.
  • Dianna Rom is the vice president of sales for Windstar Cruises .
  • Kara Bebell is a honeymoon and destination wedding expert at Travel Siblings , a Virtuoso Agency in New York, New York.
  • Farah Barhorst is the senior manager of guest experience and product development for Holland America .

Evaluate Your Budget and Look for Honeymoon Package Options

If you spent an arm and a leg on a once-in-a-lifetime dress or a 10-piece band for your wedding, it’s understandable why spending a lot of money for a honeymoon could have you feeling uneasy. Yet, except for miscellaneous on-board charges or items you may purchase in port areas, there typically aren't many unexpected costs or add-ons to worry about when taking a cruise (translation: no surprise credit card charges once you return from your honeymoon). “That’s the beauty of door-to-door fares that include everything from flights, transfers, food and beverage, tipping, WiFi, on-board entertainment, and shore excursions,” says Brad Ball, a Silversea cruise spokesperson.

Many cruise lines also promote specific honeymoon-inclusive romance packages: On Norwegian Cruise Line , newlyweds can celebrate their nuptials with in-room treats such as breakfast in bed, couples' massages, and chocolate-covered strawberries. Holland America Line offers extras like a dozen red roses and complimentary robes, and on Aqua Expeditions , honeymooners are presented with a heart-shaped chocolate cake and a bottle of champagne along with a bed sprinkled with flower petals. Silversea’s butlers can create any romantic experience a couple may desire, including an in-room private dinner and aromatherapy bath.

Consider Booking an Adults-Only Cruise

If kids running around a pool for hours isn’t your idea of a romantic or relaxing honeymoon, consider an adults-only cruise line, like Viking or Virgin Voyages , where guests need to be at least 18 years of age to sail. Or, one that provides an adult-only private area on the ship, like Celebrity Retreat and Norwegian’s The Haven , where guests have exclusive access to concierges, sundecks, restaurants, and lounges ( Royal Caribbean , Princess Cruises , and Holland America Line also promote cruise-within-a-cruise offerings). Azamara and Oceania Cruises accept guests of any age, but they discourage families from sailing with children under 18 years old as they don’t offer children’s or babysitting services. If you do honeymoon on a ship that allows kids: “Try to avoid holiday sailings,” advises Kara Bebell, a honeymoon and destination wedding expert at Travel Siblings , a Virtuoso Agency in New York, New York.

Look at the Cuisine Offerings and Chef-Owned Restaurants

One of the best parts of honeymooning is getting the chance to indulge in delicious and elevated meals with your new spouse—and if you're a foodie couple, some cruises are really tailored toward specialty dining experiences, so consider that element when choosing a cruise line and itinerary. Many of the cruise menus found on ships have been designed by the world’s leading chefs: On Celebrity Beyond , guests can enjoy meals at Le Voyage, Daniel Boulud’s 45-seat restaurant at sea. On Aqua Expedition’s Aqua Mekong , an immersive cultural journey is inspired by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson. Oceania has meals curated by celebrity chef Jacques Pepin and Ponant and Holland America Line’s menus have been designed by James Beard Award winners, Alain Ducasse and David Burke, respectively. The Chef’s Table on Viking (where sommeliers and culinary masters create the perfect pairing of food and wine during a multi-course tasting) and S.A.L.T. (an immersive culinary concept that brings authenticity to Silversea’s cuisine through locally sourced products, market trips, and visiting chef demonstrations) are just two examples of unique oceanic-based food programs. Looking to eat healthy? Lines such as Windstar are debuting gluten-free, vegan menus with no added salt or oil in addition to their existing omnivore and vegetarian options.

Think About How Adventurous You Want to Be

“Couples can choose what type of lifestyle they’d like to adapt once on board—starting their day with breakfast in bed as they watch the coastline pass or on an adventurous excursion. Or both!” says Farah Barhorst, the senior manager of guest experience and product development for Holland America. For couples who equate fun with adventure , expedition ships in far-flung places like the Antarctic or those closer to home in the Great Lakes and Canada bring excitement to the seas. On Viking, you can cruise to all three of these regions with opportunities to hike the land and learn about wildlife or dive beneath the ocean’s surface in one of their expedition ship’s submarines. On Seabourn Venture, couples can celebrate in Antarctica and the Arctic alongside a 26-person onboard expedition team made up of naturalists, historians, and scientists.

But expedition ships aren’t the only place you’ll find fun. From helicoptering over glaciers in Alaska, zip-lining through Costa Rican jungles, hiking a volcano in Iceland, or navigating a quad bike in Australia, Holland America Line offers a bounty of options for honeymooners looking for unique adventures. And on Norwegian Cruise Line’s sailing to Hawaii , honeymooners will find an array of romantic excursions from snorkeling with turtles in Molokini Crater to watching a sunset from above the clouds on the top of Summit Haleakala.

However, if you’re simply exhausted after all the wedding madness or don’t have the energy for sightseeing and would rather stay on the ship and luxuriate, you can absolutely do that too. Today’s cruise lines provide plenty of on-site offerings from cooking and photography classes to wine tasting to talks with famous guest lecturers to keep you busy.

Research Romantic Activities Offered Aboard the Ship

There’s nothing more romantic than looking up at the stars , your new spouse’s arms wrapped around your waist. Many cruise lines have tapped into that moment by offering nighttime programs such as Celebrity’s Glamping and Stargazing in the Galapagos , which starts with a dinner featuring campfire-themed treats and cocktails, followed by a naturalist-guided stargazing session under the stars and an overnight in a cabana. On SeaDream’s fleet of yachts, you can camp out overnight on a Balinese bed, while honeymooners on two of Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic ships gather around a deckside fire pit and sleep overnight in igloos that come with a mattress and a duvet warmed by hot water bottles.

If you prefer to stay in your room, a butler will arrange a dinner on your veranda that includes cozy blankets, candles, and a heater as you look out at the glacial landscape on Silversea in the Antarctic, while Virgin Voyages has placed custom-designed hammocks, handwoven by artisans from Yellow Leaf (a social enterprise that fosters women's empowerment in rural Thailand) on all their terraces (their rooms also feature mood lighting that reflects the blue seas and gold to purple sunsets outside).

Unwind Post-Wedding by Booking Wellness Experiences

For honeymooners looking to recharge after months of stressful wedding planning , a relaxing spa-at-sea experience is just another reason to book a cruise—and you may want to consider booking these experiences within the first days of cruising so that you can unwind right away.

From seaweed wraps to acupuncture to meditation and yoga classes, treatments on cruise ships rival any you’d find on land. On Norwegian, guests can soak in a flotation salt pool and experience the industry’s only charcoal sauna to help remove toxins from the body and on Seabourn, integrative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil has created a program that integrates physical, environmental, and spiritual well-being.

More good news: Access to these services is free of charge on many cruise lines, like the Scandinavian-style facilities on Viking (think: A snow grotto and heated loungers) or a 60-minute couples massage on two of Aqua Expeditions ships. Just because the ships are smaller, they can reach places that are not suitable for those huge cruise ships. The on-board experience is superb, too, all ships featuring the amenities you can expect from a major cruise line. Its itineraries are really what sets this particular company apart, though. With destinations such as Antarctica and Patagonia, Arabia, Africa and India, culture, coasts and adventure what await you.

Royal Caribbean – Activities of All Kinds

A major feature of Azamara Club Cruises is its Nights in Private Places , a sensational evening filled with luxury just for the two of you. In terms of ultimate romance, this is without question one of the best honeymoon cruises you’ll ever find.

Silversea Cruises – Spacious Luxury

Silversea voyages sail to an incredible 900+ destinations all over the planet, including all seven continents. This amazing quantity of destinations alone would make Silversea Cruises one of the best honeymoon cruise lines, but there’s more.

What really sets this cruise line apart, however, is its commitment to comfort and elegance—in addition to that wide ranging diversity of itineraries. Silversea is one of the world’s top luxury cruise lines, which becomes evident when looking at the design and layouts of its ships . The capacity of Silversea ships varies from 50 to just over 300, not even close to the multi-thousand-passenger ships of other cruise lines.

Combined with all luxurious, 21 st -century cruise facilities and amenities, this results in much more space for everyone on board. Silversea has amazing passenger-to-space and crew-to-passenger ratios, which translates to spacious suites and common areas, as well as top-notch service at all times. On Silversea cruise ships, all cabins are ocean-view suites with a personal butler service. Most of them have a private balcony, too. They’re so spacious and comfortable you could spend entire days in your own suite on your honeymoon and not get cabin fever.

These are only some of the best honeymoon cruises. If you’re still looking for something different, we suggest looking at the other cruise line pages on our website.

9 Reasons Why Cruises Are Perfect for Honeymoons

If you’re wondering if going on a cruise for your honeymoon is a good idea, the following reasons to go on a honeymoon cruise will certainly take away any doubts you may have.

1. No Stress

A honeymoon should be all about winding down after a hectic few weeks (or months) before your wedding. After the “I dos”, the cake-cutting, the hand-shaking and the party, it’s time for you to destress and unwind.

One of the best reasons to go on a honeymoon cruise is that this is one of the most stress-free ways of traveling. Everything’s available on board, from entertainment to spa treatments, from fine dining to activities. And the beauty of all of this is that nearly everything is included in the price.

If you plan well—another aspect of the wedding planning process is actually planning a honeymoon—, there will be no need to pay for anything at all during your time aboard the ship. This makes it easy to budget your honeymoon, eliminating the need to check your bank account balances during your trip. No stress, indeed!

2. Multiple Destinations

Many people choose to visit one particular destination or region on their honeymoon. Paris, Venice, Bali, Hawaii,… we all know the classic romantic and/or beach destinations. However, what sets a honeymoon cruise apart from all other honeymoon is that it offers you the chance to visit multiple destinations, conveniently and easily.

Whether you’re cruising the Mediterranean, the South Pacific or the Caribbean , essentially all modern cruise ships call at various different ports. This results in the perfect combination of onboard relaxation and onshore exploration. A honeymoon cruise offers both cultural immersion in multiple cities and sunbathing by the pool. Again, there’s zero stress involved here.

3. No Need to Keep Packing/Unpacking

This may be rather obvious, but it’s also worth reminding you of. On a cruise, while you’re visiting several awesome places, you will only have to unpack and pack once .

From the moment you’re settled in your cabin or suite, it will be your home for the rest of the cruise. It’ll be a cozy retreat and a welcome refuge, a place to relax and a place of romance. A honeymoon cruise allows you to basically stay in the same place, while visiting different places.

4. Food’s Included

Many cruise lines offer all-inclusive programs. This means that pretty much everything is included in the price. This includes onshore excursions, nightly entertainment, onboard activities and all food. If you do some research, you can also find cruises where alcohol is included as well.

This makes cruises one of the most economic types of honeymoons you can possibly have. It greatly reduces, if not eliminates, your expenses during the entire trip. Note, though, that some onboard features, such as many spa treatments and Internet access, and most independent onshore activities aren’t included in the price. Tips usually aren’t either.

5. All Kinds of Activities

It’s impossible to get bored on a cruise ship. It just can’t be done. Nowadays, these floating cities feature an overwhelming selection of amenities and offer countless activities. On the ship, you can visit a movie theater, catch a theater performance, go swimming, enjoy world-class cuisine, work out at the gym, relax in a park-like environment, grab a cup of coffee at a waterfront café,… The list goes on and on and on. It’s literally like staying in a town.

Many of the largest cruise ships have things like water parks and slides, zip lines and rock climbing walls, skydiving simulators, lush gardens and even moving platforms that change from breakfast place in the morning to party hotspot in the evening.

6. Room Service

You’re newlyweds and you’ll probably spend quite a lot of time in your room—let’s be honest. So, one of the greatest reasons to go on an honeymoon cruise is the 24/7 room service.

There’s no need to leave your room if you don’t want to. You could spend literally the entire day in there. If you get hungry, you simply call room service. Both food and delivery are included in the price. Gratuity, however, is recommended. How convenient is that?

7. Couples Massages

A couples massage may be one of the greatest and most romantic ways to relax after the wedding. Doing this on your first day aboard the ship is a wonderful way to kick off your honeymoon. It’s good to know, though, that you have to pay extra for these kinds of treatments as they’re probably not included in the all-inclusive program.

8. Limitless Date Night Options

One of the most fun things to do as a couple is date nights, no question about that. During a honeymoon cruise, you’ll have a plethora of options.

While cruises are mainly about relaxation and fun, they can also be packed with action and activities. You make them what you want them to be. There’s so much to do in the evening that you’ll have difficulty choosing what to do. Besides romantic dinners and cocktails in the bars, there are magic shows, movie screenings, live music performances, stand-up comedy shows and live theater. And all of it is free!

9. Disconnection

A honeymoon should be about you two, and you two only. Cruises often have no, or at best weak, cell phone reception, while Wi-Fi is usually pretty expensive. This does not need to be a bad thing, though, rather the contrary.

Not being able to easily connect with the rest of the online world allows you to be in the moment with your significant other. There will be no distractions. One of the best reasons to go on a honeymoon cruise is that it’s arguably the only way of honeymooning that forces you to “unplug”. This, of course, focuses all of your attention on the other, which is a pretty great thing.

Are Cruises Good for a Honeymoon? What to Know Before You Book

Thinking of taking a cruise for your honeymoon? Tying the knot can be a stressful (and expensive!) experience. Who doesn’t want to relax afterward on a cruise where everything is taken care of for you? Perhaps the hardest decision you’ll face the entire trip is where to have dinner in the evening.

cruise for a honeymoon

In fact, cruises are ideal for those that want a simple honeymoon while still having the opportunity to do something memorable and to explore exotic places. Still, you only get one honeymoon and you no doubt want to make it perfect. That’s why before you book the trip, there are some pros, cons, and things to know about booking a honeymoon vacation on a cruise.

Big Benefit to a Honeymoon Cruise: Easy to Plan

Anyone that’s gone through planning a wedding knows that there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into the big day. Thankfully, planning a cruise is nowhere near the pain of planning a wedding (not the least of which there are no issues about who to include on the guest list!).

With a cruise, you really only have to make a handful of decisions. In fact, the most important decisions boil down to three main factors : the cruise line, the ship, and the itinerary. Other than that, most decisions are relatively minor as buying a cruise means essentially buying a ready-made vacation where most things are included.

That’s not to say there won’t be more choices to make (Buy the drink package? Room type? Shore excursions?), but compared to big decisions like picking a wedding venue, they are no big deal.

There’s Lots to Do For Young Couples

If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, then it’s likely that you are relatively young. In that case, we’re guessing that you want something a bit more active than just sitting on your balcony and sipping champagne while watching the water (although that’s certainly an option).

In this case, another nice thing about honeymooning on a cruise is that you’ll have lots to do. Cruises have a full entertainment schedule throughout the day and evening, to say nothing of what you might do in ports of call.

In the morning there might be morning exercise classes, followed by trivia, poolside games, casino gambling, dinner, and an evening show. That’s to say nothing of the built in activities that range from rock walls to roller coasters to waterslides, and more. So whenever you do decide to leave the room, there’s no shortage of ways to be entertained.

Cruises Are Great for Romance

If you want romance, then while cruises aren’t exactly a trip to Paris, they can hold then own in the category. For one, there’s something romantic about being at sea that removes many of the distractions of back home. Then there is the fact that you’re often in warm, tropical locations where clothing is a little less than normal.

Add to that the number of opportunities to dress up and go to fancy dinners or simply be alone on a balcony watching the waves go by. No matter what you and your partner find romantic, you’ll find a chance to experience it on a cruise.

You Likely Won’t be Alone in Celebrating

While there are no statistics on how many people take cruises for their honeymoon, anecdotally we can tell you that it’s very common.

For instance, a common evening show on many ships is a rendition of The Newlywed Game with passengers playing as contestants. The format is one couple is newly married, another is the longest-married couple, and the third is in between. There is never any trouble finding contestants that are newly married or celebrating their honeymoon.

In other words, if you have worries for some reason that celebrating a honeymoon on a cruise isn’t “normal,” then nothing could be further from the truth.

Different Lines Mean Different Honeymoons

One important thing to consider if taking a honeymoon on a cruise is the type of vacation you want to have. That’s because different lines have different personalities. In our opinion, some are better slated for a honeymoon cruise than others.

For instance, Carnival is more family-focused . While it’s fun and affordable compared to other lines, you may not want to be sharing your special trip with a lot of children.

Higher-end lines like Celebrity offer an experience that is likely what more people think of as a honeymoon trip. It features fancier dining, a more adult-focused atmosphere, and simply a more luxurious feel. However, it is more expensive and sails fewer ships than a larger line like Royal Caribbean or Carnival, giving you fewer options.

One Drawback: Sharing Your Honeymoon With Lots of Others

If there is a drawback with taking a honeymoon cruise, it’s that you’re going to share this special time in your life with a lot of people.

Modern cruise ships can carry upwards of 6,000 passengers. Yes, that is a lot of people, but ships are also built bigger to accommodate that many people. So it’s not a case that there are simply more people stuffed onto the same size ship.

Still, there’s no arguing that if you’re wanting a more private vacation, then a cruise may not be the right fit. For instance, you aren’t going to be able to sit in a private hot tub and take in a sunset with your new spouse. However, it’s hard to beat the value, variety, and ease of cruising.

Other Vacations May Be More Relaxing

If you’re wanting a memorable honeymoon, then a cruise can be a great option. It offers a lot to see and do packed into a relatively short vacation. If you’re wanting a relaxing trip? We think there are better options out there.

A cruise is definitely what you make of it. If you want to hang out poolside, visit the spa , sit on the balcony and watch the waves, then you absolutely can do that. In reality, however, a young couple taking a honeymoon is going to be doing a lot more.

There are all the activities on the ship and exploring ports of call, all with thousands of other passengers. The result may be a vacation that feels more hectic than it would be if you visited a quieter spot with fewer people and less to see and do.

If you like having an active vacation, it’s great. If you want to simply relax and be alone with your new spouse, it may not be a right fit.

Are Cruises a Good Choice for a Honeymoon?

When it comes to take a cruise for your honeymoon, there are definite pros and cons. To us, the biggest reason to favor a cruise is that it makes planning your honeymoon extremely easy following what’s likely been a stressful time with the wedding ceremony. It’s also relatively affordable and since cruises run year-round, it doesn’t matter when you want to travel, there will be tons of trips available.

On the downside, you are sharing your trip with other people — a lot of other people. That’s not to say that you can’t have plenty of time to yourselves, but when doing anything outside of the cabin, there will be plenty of others around.

Still, cruises are definitely a popular option for honeymoons and for good reason . We mentioned the ease of planning. There’s also the ability for romance with fancy dinners, warm weather, free-flowing drinks, and swimsuits. There’s a lot to do both onboard and exploring ports of call. And depending on the cruise line you choose, the vibe can be tailored to whatever style you want from fun-loving to more sophisticated.

So while we don’t think that a honeymoon cruise is for everyone, if you’re already interested in the idea, then it’s likely going to be a perfect fit.

The Pros and Cons of Cruising on Your Honeymoon

cruise for a honeymoon

Have you considered going on a cruise honeymoon as a way to leave the stress of your wedding behind and sail off to explore romantic ports together? A relaxing change like that is certainly part of the pleasure, but there's more to the experience than that. Discover the pros and cons of choosing a cruise — and the very best cruise lines for couples .

It's easy.  After making countless choices regarding your wedding, taking a honeymoon cruise is the simplest choice of all. On a cruise all the basics—cabin, meals, on-site activities, and entertainment—are covered in one all-inclusive fee. To make things even simpler for yourselves, use a travel agent to book your voyage. An agent should be able to recommend a ship that's right for you as well as possibly secure an upgrade, onboard credits, or other benefits.

Stay within budget. Ahead of time, you'll know the price of your cruise (except for miscellaneous on-board purchases and fees) and the cost of airfare, so you can plan a honeymoon that you can afford.

Ship-shape accommodations.  Although most cruise cabins are small (under 300 square feet), they are impressively well designed to accommodate a double bed, couch, desk with chair, closets, minibar, and private bathroom with shower.

Unpack once.  After you board, empty your suitcases , stash them under the bed or in the closet, and don't think about using them again until you have to get ready to disembark.

Leave your wallet in the safe.  You can charge everything you need on board to your cabin and pay before you depart. There's no need to carry money around, unless you take part in excursions or you're on a ship with a casino and want to gamble.

You won't go hungry.  Food, including snacks and beverages, is plentiful. On big ships, the buffet is usually open or you can get coffee or even ice cream in the middle of the day.

Onboard activities.  Most ships issue a daily schedule of activities. In addition, there's usually a fitness center and spa (fee for services).

Water wonderlands.  Big ships have swimming pools and hot tubs surrounded by chaise longues. Some pool areas have special water features such as slides and surfing simulators.

Sunrises and sunsets.  Passengers love having a private balcony, and new ships accommodate by building more cabins with them. Have breakfast together on yours in just your robes, sunbathe in private, and toast the sunset there before going out at night.

At your service.  Visit the customer relations desk or ask your cabin steward if you need help. Or choose an upgraded guest room or suites to get a dedicated butler or concierge.

Ports of call. Explore new destinations together each time the ship docks.

Meet new friends.  If you're in the mood to socialize, you'll find ample opportunities to meet, tour in the company of, dine with, and make friends with other couples onboard.

Marry onboard.  Desire an all-in-one wedding and honeymoon? Cruise lines are experienced in hosting weddings onboard and in port. Most work with offsite wedding planners who can arrange all the details in advance, regardless of whether it's just the two of you or a large group of friends and family. Onboard, a coordinator can make sure the event plays out just as you dreamed it would.

Seasickness: Unless you have a very delicate stomach or are sailing transcontinental in the winter, seasickness isn't likely to affect you. But if you're concerned, pick up a pair of seasickness bands , over-the-counter Dramamine, or ask your doctor for a Transderm Scop prescription (it's a patch worn behind the ear).

Limited—or costly—dining choices.  River cruises usually have a single dining room, where you take all your meals. Huge cruise ships typically have a large main dining room and smaller eateries, but you may have to pay to dine there to get better food. Although some cruise lines have put great effort into upping their cuisine, many others still offer mediocre meals.

Quick port visits.  Most cruise ships dock for just a few hours, so it's important to plan ahead on how to spend your time. Don't expect to soak up the local culture during a short window of time.

Hidden costs. River cruises offer complimentary daily walking tours, but on bigger ships, off-site excursions and activities are not included in the price.

Wi-fi isn't free.  Although some river cruise companies such as Viking provide it gratis, connections aren't always dependable. On big ships, there is usually a charge to connect to the Internet.

Talent not ready for prime time. On-board entertainment is designed to appeal to the widest audience and may not be to your taste.

Casino temptation. There's no guarantee you'll win when playing games of chance, and unlucky individuals and those with an addictive personality can find themselves losing a lot. So set a daily limit, and bet with your head and not over it.

Tips appreciated. These are usually not included in the cruise fare. As the sailing comes to an end, you'll be notified of appropriate amounts to leave the staff, who work hard to serve.

Norovirus outbreaks. Every once in a while, some passengers succumb to this, and it's awful. Today ships have installed hand-cleaning stations in public spaces, and there hasn't been a major outbreak lately.

Couples who get married from June to September should find it relatively easy to dash abroad after they say “I do.” After all, so many of the best summer honeymoon destinations are in their prime during peak wedding season. Craving the summer glamour of Europe? The comfortable winter temperatures of tropical destinations below the equator? Whether you wish to escape to the beach, explore historic towns, or just enjoy each other’s company alongside a private pool, there’s a dream destination to fill your heart’s desire.

To help narrow down your search, here are some of the best summer honeymoon destinations around the globe—all ideal for kicking back, relaxing, and reconnecting after the rush of wedding planning is over.

The Cycladic Islands of Greece are at peak season in the summertime, as warm temperatures coincide with the opening of beach clubs and restaurants in the region. Crowds of tourists might make visiting tricky in July and August, but locals prefer heading to the islands in June and September for a calmer retreat. The Domes group has two stunning properties on Mykonos and Santorini that are perfect for honeymooners hoping to island hop. Each hotel is located a five to 10-minute drive away from the islands’ most popular spots and offers stunning sunset views and delicious, regionally-informed fine dining. Plus, many of the luxury suites have their own private pools for couples looking to balance alone time with the excitement of the bustling islands. In Mykonos, there are beach clubs like Soho House outpost Scorpios and boat trips to the ancient ruins of Delos; honeymooners in Santorini can enjoy the views of Oia and enjoy local cuisine and sip on Assyrtiko at the popular winery Domaine Sigalas .

South Africa

If exploring the wildlife of South Africa has always been a dream for you and your spouse-to-be, book a honeymoon safari from May to September. For a romantic escape in nature, consider a suite at the Great River Fish Lodge on the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. Guests can enjoy large viewing decks and private plunge pools from their spacious suites and adventure on daily game drives. Another excellent option for safaris is the &Beyond Tengile River Lodge on the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The hotel’s eco-friendly design features glamorous, bespoke interiors that create a lovely respite after a day out with guides. A few nights in Cape Town are also a must. Book a stay at the waterfront One&Only Cape Town and be sure to make time to explore the region’s many vineyards .

If you want to enjoy the Mediterranean, head to The Maybourne Riviera for gorgeous modern interiors featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal incredible cliffside views and a hopping beach club open all season. Spend a few nights out at Capelongue to experience a luxe, relaxing Provençal retreat with beautiful vistas of Lubéron and its own Michelin-starred restaurant, then head to the the gorgeous city of Aix-en-Provence for a stay at Villa Saint-Ange , which offers the rare luxury of a lush escape close to the city center. Pro tip: The region’s famed lavender fields are best seen in the earlier part of the summer before harvest begins in August.

Couples getting married in the Northeast need not go far to enjoy a relaxing postnuptial vacation. If you’re hosting a New York City celebration, consider staying a night or two at the Ritz Carlton New York Central Park to enjoy unparalleled views of the park and a La Prairie spa treatment before jetting off to a distant honeymoon destination. Another excellent mini-moon option is the Auberge Collection’s idyllic Mayflower Inn & Spa in Connecticut, with charming interiors by Celerie Kemble, farm-to-table dining, and incredible grounds that are ready for both lazy and active summer activities—all ideal for some romantic R&R. Of course, honeymooners should absolutely take advantage of the inn’s beautiful spa retreat by The Well with its state-of-the-art facilities, holistic treatments, and dreamy design.

If the lush jungle and beaches of Bali have always called to you as your dream honeymoon destination, it’s best to book your trip during the dry season from May to October. Luxury comes at a lower price on the island, so an incredible experience awaits no matter your budget. If you wish to splurge on a clifftop contemporary retreat along the coast, book a stay at the Alila Uluwatu . Each villa is equipped with numerous amenities and private pools, while the top-tier service can be tailored to your taste from “discrete” to “indulgent.” If you prefer an escape immersed in the jungle, Como Shambhala Estate is the perfect resort to let you and your new spouse focus on wellness and relaxation.

June is one of the best times to embrace la dolce vita in Italy . With temperatures ranging from the 60s to 80s, honeymooners can explore the storied museums, vineyards, and coastlines before the crowds and humidity increase in July and August. Honeymooners who have already toured the historic cities of Rome , Florence, and Venice can avoid the rush of summer tourism and take advantage of the relaxing retreats throughout the country. If you’re looking for a White Lotus -inspired vacation (without the drama, of course), take a trip to Taormina in Sicily for a beachside honeymoon. Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel is a stunning property for your stay with old-world charm dripping from its wallpapered halls and six-acre gardens. For an intimate escape focused on food, wine, and wellness, head to the hills and relax after your nuptials at the Monteverdi Tuscany . Located in the UNESCO World Heritage site Val d’Orcia, the hotel brings next-level fine dining to the medieval town. Any architecturally minded honeymooners heading to Capri might want to book a few nights at Punta Tragara . Designed by Le Corbusier, the interiors are as much of a draw as the beautiful ocean views. If you want to infuse your classic holiday with a modern touch, you might want to stay a while at Il Sereno , a Lake Como hotel designed with a refined, minimalist sensibility by Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola.

If you want a perfect blend of beaches and stunning wildlife, head to the African island nation of Mauritius. June and September are the sweet spot months to avoid the extreme heat of the summer and slightly cooler temperatures of the winter—although numbers during the months of July and August rarely dip below the 60s. National parks offer beautiful jungle excursions while the coastline is famed for its incredible beaches. Lux* Grand Baie is definitely a hot spot on the island for couples that don't mind balancing relaxing spa visits with dj sets by the pool. For a more restful retreat, book a stay at the Maradiva Villas Resort perched above Tamarin Bay. It’s important to note for LGBT+ honeymooners that while same-sex marriages are not legal in the country, the government has banned all discrimination against same-sex couples.
