Does anyone have information about older golf carts manufactured by Cruise Car, Inc? They are located in Sarasota, FL but are now owned by ICON. I am considering one that is listed as a "shell with a 48 volt a/c motor. I have attached screen shots that may offer clues. The asking price is very reasonable but I don't want to get bogged down in a project hanging over a bottomless pit. I'm very new to the golf cart world so I'm very uneducated about what components are compatible with others, what components are make and model specific and what components will work with multiple LSV formats. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

A Chinese basket case cart that you most like can't buy parts for? Or find a manual? My advice is to run away as fast as possible. If you insist on a project buy something you find parts for and can find a manual for. Club car, EZGO or Yamaha.

What in the heck is going on there? That's an AC motor and a DC controller, completely incompatible. Looks like an absolute basket case

Thanks for the heads up. I thought perhaps the shell and the motor could be a starting point @ $200. Are most aftermarket components compatible with each other or is this particular motor something that doesn't play well with others? This will most likely be a pass, but, since I have you here: 1_ is there any particular advantage of or reason to choose an AC system over DC or a DC system over AC? 2_ I currently have a '95 36 volt club car DS with resistor coils. Can I replace the coils with a controller without swapping out the motor, and would the controller be compatible with the existing V-Glide potentiometer?

Notsoslim said: AC is more efficient with better performance and extended range. Conversion kits start at around 2K with the motor and controller but most do not include a HD solenoid. I think they are only for 48 volt systems or higher. In order to change over from resistor coils from a solid state controller you would have to change your harness. Since all 36 volt DS carts 1995 and up were resistor carts you would need a harness for a controller cart from 1994 when they made both resistor and controller carts. They listed 2 different motors in 94 so I don't know if your would be compatible. Golf Cart Wizard would probably know. Here are the motors they listed in 94. It appears the controller carts had a stronger motor. View attachment 15571 Click to expand...

As I said I don't know if it is compatible. If you look at a 94 parts manual they used different motors in controller versus resistor carts. The resistor cart in 95 had the lower HP motor (2.97 HP). Maybe the controller puts out more power than the resistor system motor will handle. As I said I don't know for sure and that is why I deferred.

  • My ( '95) has gradually been losing power in reverse. Today is struggles on anything but level hard surfaces. Could removing and cleaning the f/n/r switch help solve the issue or should I be looking at another suspect? Would cleaning the coils potentially help restore some power?
  • I have come to realize that the cluster of wires under the seat is not quite as standard as I thought. At least the previous owner had a label maker.
  • A couple of the battery cables are way longer than needed for the connections they are making. Can longer cables rob power that should be going to the motor? I know there are connection cable kits for 36v x 6 that would at least help organize the mess.
  • The cable from the f/n/r switch to the S1 motor post is spliced (circled in yellow). Another potential point for loss of power?
  • What is the function of the A1, A2, S1, and S2 connections? I believe that knowing this information may help me understand the wire connections and routing to help clean up the cluster.

20240720_171829.webp

1. The 36v resistor carts have reverse tapped off of only 3 batteries to limit reverse speed. If you use reverse frequently you will cause the battery pack to become imbalanced and the 3 batteries used for reverse will start to go bad prematurely. Check the battery voltage under load, that is likely the issue. Another drawback of most resistor carts 2. Yes longer cables increase resistance which will waste power, as will any bad connections. That wiring is a mess, if you're going to redo it may as well convert to controller in the process.

Top 10 Best Gas Golf Carts [2023] Complete Buying Guide

January 29, 2021 by Brittany Olizarowicz Leave a Comment

Empty electric golf cart parked on a fairway at a golf club in the hot summer sunshine

Golf carts have become quite the trendy possession, and why not? They are recreational, fun to ride around in, and are environment-friendly. Golf carts come in different types just like all other vehicles. You can choose from an electric golf cart, and then there are carts that run on gasoline. If you are looking to buy a gas golf cart, this buying guide will help you decide how and why gas golf carts could be the ideal purchase.

Golf Carts – Gas or Electric?

All types of golf carts serve the same purpose – they are used by golfers to drive through and around the course with their golf equipment. However, the modern use of golf carts is not confined to this. Some of the main uses of a golf cart have been listed below:

  • Campus transport for security patrolling
  • Transport for gardening fields and sizeable land
  • An off-road vacation on property
  • A campground vehicle
  • Transport on airports and entertainment venues for security and maintenance
  • Rental transport at weddings and other similar events
  • A golf cart snow plow

Even people with little or no interest in golf own these carts, so playing golf does not make for a prerequisite to get your hands on one of these.

Now, let’s consider the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of golf carts – gas and electric.

Which One Performs Better?

In terms of performance, both carts do exceptionally well on even ground and normal terrain. Gas carts are powered with combustible engines, either 2-cycle or 4-cycle, and are fueled by regular automobile gas, while electric golf carts run on rechargeable 36 or 48 V batteries.

On a slope, gas golf carts perform better and can cover relatively more distance than an electric car. If you are planning long rides all day long, a gas cart is the preferred option. If, on average, the electric cart can cover 20-25 km on a single charge, a gas golf cart can provide 5 times that distance. If speed and distance matter more, a gas golf cart is a better option.

These cars also have the ability to pull heavy loads and are much easier to refill in comparison. With an average horsepower of 10-12, gas golf carts are speedier than your ordinary electric carts.

Which One Enables Cost Savings?

hand putting money coins with filter effect retro vintage style

However, if gasoline is cheaper than electricity in your country, operating costs for a gas cart will be lower in comparison. The opposite is true if electricity rates are lower. The operating cost for a gas golf cart is approximately $0.12-$0.14 per mile typically, whereas an electric golf cart will cost $0.2 to $0.4 per mile. From an overall cost perspective, gasoline-powered golf carts are expensive.

Furthermore, a gas golf cart requires more moving parts than electric ones and these undergo wear and tear, making second-hand golf carts a tricky exchange.

Which One Is Easier to Maintain?

As already mentioned in the previous point, a gas golf cart is equipped with more moving parts, so maintenance can be costly. The maintenance expenditure for a gasoline-powered golf cart comprises of the following:

  • Filter change
  • Spark plug change
  • Driver belt and starter belt change
  • Battery change
  • Clutch change
  • Starter brush change

These changes may be required annually or every 2-3 years.

As for electric golf carts, maintenance is not a hefty expenditure. Their batteries can be changed every 4 to 5 years, which costs around $400. Although there are typically no major annual servicing costs involved, maintenance is a must.

Electric golf carts require more than frequent charging as well. While batteries need to be kept in optimal condition, their water needs to be checked regularly. Battery terminals tend to corrode over time and regular cleaning is, hence, mandatory. If the battery life is to be prolonged, make sure to check the water in your car battery every month or more often than necessary.

Which One Is Environmental Friendly?

Electric golf carts run on battery and are, thus, free from emission and noise. As for gasoline-powered golf carts, they emit harmful chemicals that harm the environment. The carbon monoxide that is emitted can make the air toxic for breathing. These carts are also noisy relative to electric golf carts, but there are costs associated with high-maintenance things, right?

There have been innovations toward creating environment-friendly engines for a gasoline-powered golf cart. The new 4-cycle engine produces much less noise as compared to a 2-cycle engine and is cleaner. If you are leaning toward an eco-friendly option but want a gas cart, go for a 4-cycle engine in your gas golf cart for cleaner and greener air.

In conclusion, electric golf carts make more sense if you are all in for saving money, but if you are looking for a golf cart that provides better mileage, can drive on steep slopes and rugged terrains, and can provide better value for money, a gasoline-powered golf cart it is!

Make sure all these components are thoroughly reviewed by service personnel and in case of any disruptions during the drive, get help immediately. Not doing maintenance can result in long-term damage to your vehicle. This is not the kind of risk you should take with an investment this big.

FAQs for Gas Golf Carts

This FAQ section has been put together to ensure that you are not left with any confusion or queries regarding gas golf carts.

How Can I Haul a Golf Cart?

A golf cart may be hauled with the aid of a pickup truck or trailer. Aluminum ramps are used to load a golf cart in the back of a pickup truck. Similarly, a golf cart can be hauled using tilt-down trailers or those with fold-down ramps.

Whatever you choose, just make sure you know the dimensions of your cart and decide on a hauling option that is both secure and inexpensive. Hiring a large pickup truck for a small gas golf cart such as the Villager 2 from Club Car is not a wise decision and will just be a waste of your money.

What Are the Different Types of Windshields Available?

You have a variety of windshield options to choose from for your gas golf cart.

  • Acrylic – This is usually the hardest form of material used to make windshields for golf carts. It’s inexpensive and scratch-less but can easily shatter in the face of high impact.
  • Impact-modified acrylic – This is normal acrylic mixed with rubber and has been made to be impact-resistant to prevent breaking easily. However, the added rubber makes the windshield less scratch-resistant, so that is one tradeoff you will have to make.
  • Polycarbonate – This is the softest material used for manufacturing windshield, thus making it absolutely impact-resistant. However, the soft touch makes it all the more prone to scratches, so you need to exercise care while cleaning polycarbonate windshields.

Is the Golf Cart Only Limited to Use on the Golf Course?

The low-speed vehicle (LSV) category of golf carts fulfills most street-legal requirements and can, therefore, be used on the street. As for all other golf carts, they are absolutely multifunctional and can be used on the course as well as off the course for purposes other than playing golf.

Taking the golf cart on a public road usually requires approval from the local authorities and federal laws. Without such an approval, you could be taking a risk by bringing this vehicle on the road, so make sure you have all the approvals you need.

How Often Does My Golf Cart Need Maintenance?

A routine checkup is mandatory. This could be on a monthly basis or quarterly basis. Some parts might need servicing annually only. Any wear and tear needs to be fixed immediately. While oil change, filter change, and belt change are a few things that may not require monthly servicing, a checkup is mandatory no matter what. Have your mechanic review the golf cart and all its essential parts on a monthly basis and perform repairs as and when required.

Can I Purchase a Second-Hand Golf Cart?

Yes, definitely. Used golf carts are available from popular brands that have been mentioned in the article. Yamaha specializes in selling second-hand golf carts and so do a lot of other manufacturers and dealers. You may look up used golf carts over the internet near your area and get in touch with the seller.

Since gasoline-powered golf carts are relatively expensive, a second-hand golf cart can fit your wallet. However, you must exercise extra caution as a gas golf cart is filled with moving parts, as mentioned before. Excessive wear and tear should not be overlooked, and a full inspection of the vehicle is necessary before paying for it.

Final Thoughts

If you have found your favorite gasoline-powered golf cart, it’s time you purchase it. Use this comprehensive buying guide to help you make an informed and rational decision. Choose a gasoline-powered golf cart that you can use on the course and beyond.

Golf Cart Rental Was Amazing!...Review

Hey everyone, Just wanted to give a quick review of our experience renting a golf cart from Bonaire Cruisers. We had such a great time! The rental place is about a 6-7 minute walk from the pier. They say to head to the tent at the pier first, but im not sure if you really need to do that. Check in was quick and easy. It was $95USD for the day and $100 refundable deposit. We were surprised that all of the carts were literally brand new. We went December 2019 aboard the Crown Princess.

The biggest tip that we can give is one that the company tells you in the confirmation email...download Maps.me (it is an app). I dont know how it works, but it does. You basically download the map of the ABC islands and it works just like a GPS, even without cell service. We were able to find landmarks and places to eat, just like you would on Google Maps. The paper map that they give you is pretty easy to follow as there is literally only one road out of town. The carts dont go all that fast, but its a nice leisurely stroll.

One more tip-The guard shack at the salt flats had a wooden box that had chunks of salt you can bring home for free. We didnt know this until we got back to the ship(we bought some in town).

Feel free to check out our video below to see what all we did in Bonaire! Its was our favorite island on the cruise, and now the Caribbean!

We did this back in November and loved it as well.  Had the opportunity to capture some of the most beautiful pictures of any trip we've taken.  It was hot, though...and it was November.  Plenty of sun too so take your sun screen.

ccturner26

This remind me so much of Grand Turk, where we got a cart.  I will definitely check into it for Bonaire!  Thanks for the great video and tips!

They are so much fun 😊

Terab85

Thanks for sharing info.  Looks like fun and will definitely look into doing that in August.

Question for you.  How far were you able to go?  Did you have to refill the gas at all?

This is what we are planning for July.  Glad to see you enjoyed it.

I’ve rented the carts in the past and will be again in April. You can go where you want, at your own pace. Bonaire Cruisers is the best!

There are 4 of us.

Can we take one golf cart or do we need two?

Hi, they list South Side tours and North Side Tours, we are going to be there 8AM-9PM, I presume there is time to do them both, correct?

CruiseCruiseCruise13

Does anyone know if they offer half day rentals? We’re in port 10a - 11p and plan to do a snorkel excursion in the morning until 2pm. We’d also like to see the salt flats and hopefully some flamingos. Would a GC rental be best, or a would a taxi or afternoon tour be better?

DH and I were wondering the exact same thing.  He is diving in the morning.  THought a 1/2 day afternoon rental might be great.  Might just stop by the provider and see if anything is available and wing it.  Don't want to pay for a full day unnecessarily - can't wait to be there in just over 3 weeks!!

Enjoy! Would love to hear how you get on. We’re not there until December.

My wife and I have been there twice and we did North and South tours and still had plenty of time to see all parts including a bar stop for refreshments on each leg of the respective tours. And stopping to see various picture stops.

JoRoy218

Appreciate and enjoyed your review. Convinced us to make a reservation, which I did. We’ll be there in late December. Did you just randomly stop at certain places or did you have a list? Suggestions for stops?  Thanks!

we are doing this next week, 2 adults and two children (both 11), what are the must hit stops on the north and south?

Thank you for the info!  We are renting one and was looking what to do.  This helps out a ton!
