Costa Serena Reveals Malaysia’s Inaugural Global Cruise Hub In Port Klang

Costa Serena @ Port Klang

In a pioneering partnership, Costa Cruises, renowned for European luxury voyages, joined forces with Hwajing Travel & Tours (Hwajing), a prominent Southeast Asian cruise tour operator, to announce the landmark initiative of inaugurating Malaysia’s inaugural international cruise homeport in Port Klang.

Debuting Port Klang As Malaysia’s Premier Global Cruise Hub

Malaysia’s advantageous geographic location and historical importance in the Straits of Malacca over the years position it as an optimal homeport, providing a distinctive starting point for both local and international travelers.

This inaugural effort signifies a noteworthy endeavor, highlighting the country’s increasing influence in the worldwide cruise sector while addressing the unique requirements of the Muslim market. The opulence of Costa Serena will redefine the standards of luxury cruising, representing a substantial advancement for Malaysia within the global cruise industry.

Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, Mr. Kenny Cheong

As said by the Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, Mr. Kenny Cheong:

Even during the pandemic, we maintained a close working rapport with Costa Cruises,

While Malaysian ports are not the typical selection for international luxury cruises, the upheavals brought about by the recent pandemic have created openings for well-equipped harbors like Port Klang to carve a niche in the industry as things return to normal. The sight of the Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang, proudly waving during the ceremony, alongside the Hwajing flag, served as a vibrant demonstration of patriotism, paying homage to the country and acknowledging one of the busiest container ports globally.

Mr. Kenny Cheong further stated:

In 2020, when China closed its ports, we were in constant communication, hoping to have the Costa Serena docked in Malaysia. However, it was not feasible. Therefore, as soon as the world reopened, we promptly brought her here for a trial run. The strategic choice of Port Klang as Costa Serena’s homeport underscores Malaysia’s emergence as a maritime hub, poised to cater to a diverse international clientele. Mr. Kenny Cheong, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours

Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook

The Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook also said:

With Port Klang as the new hub, it unlocks more opportunities for tourists to explore Malaysia’s diverse culture, unique architectures and delicious cuisines, be it through excursions to the Royal City of Klang, the vibrant temples of Batu Caves or the street food of Kuala Lumpur. This positions Malaysia as a regional leader in job creation within the cruise industry and is also a shot in the arm for supporting sectors such as accommodation, dining, transportation, and retail.

He further stated:

The establishment of Costa Serena as Malaysia’s first international cruise homeport is a game-changer, elevating Malaysia to a premier international cruise destination. Port Klang’s designation as an international cruise homeport opens doors for collaborative ventures with other regional ports, laying the foundation for a network of intersecting cruise itineraries . YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia

Costa Serena: A Nautical Marvel Embracing Roman Grandeur & European Elegance

The Costa Serena stands as the esteemed flagship vessel of Costa Cruises, maintaining an impeccable record since its inaugural service in 2007.

Its remarkable cruise liner interiors radiate the allure of a lavish Roman city, creating an immersive experience that turns every journey into an unforgettable odyssey, competing with the most beloved and entertaining Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises. Serving as a floating tribute to ancient Roman mythology, the Costa Serena skillfully combines European luxury with Italian refinement.

A Fusion Of European Seafaring Legacy & ASEAN Cruise Expertise With Costa Cruises & Hwajing

Costa Cruises & Hwajing partnership

Costa Cruises, the largest cruise brand in Europe with a venerable 75-year history, entered the Asian market more than 15 years ago. Renowned for their “Cruising Italian Style” mantra, they are acclaimed for crafting unique and highly enjoyable maritime experiences, paying meticulous attention to detail.

Hwajing has also been a significant player in the ASEAN cruise tourism sector since 1989. This partnership with Costa Cruises marks a fresh chapter in the company’s journey. The strategic choice to make Port Klang the homeport for Costa Serena aligns with Hwajing’s dedication to exploring new markets and providing passengers with an unparalleled travel experience.

Cruise Initiatives Catering To The Muslim Market

United in a shared vision, Costa Cruises and Hwajing set forth on a journey to tap into the expansive potential of the yet-to-be-explored Muslim travel market. Both companies have meticulously tailored their services and offerings to meet the specific needs and preferences of Muslim travelers, ensuring a considerate, reflective, and inclusive experience for all passengers.

This customized cruise experience seamlessly integrates elements of leisure, charitable activities, and Halalan Toyyiban, creating a unique tapestry of the voyage. Managed by Intratama Travel Consultant & Tours, passengers can participate in enlightening Islamic lectures and workshops, enriching their overall cruise experience with a deeper cultural and spiritual connection.

Concurrently, there is a distinctive opportunity to promote cross-cultural exchange by diversifying the array of food and beverage options. The dazzling culinary offerings, featuring 40% Asian cuisine, promise an enticing blend of flavors, showcasing highlights such as Tomahawk steaks, Musang King durian gelato, and other delightful culinary creations and desserts.

Fostering Economic Renaissance With Costa Cruises & Hwajing

Costa Serena @ Port Klang Fostering Economic Renaissance

This initial undertaking, a partnership between Costa Cruises and Hwajing, has the potential to yield enduring economic gains and sustained advantages for the nation, contingent on the success and continuity of this collaboration.

The introduction of Costa Serena at Port Klang transcends a mere tourism boost; it serves as a catalyst for fostering sustainable economic growth. Being the inaugural international cruise homeport, it is poised to generate a ripple effect, revitalizing Malaysia’s economy and unlocking opportunities across diverse sectors.

This upswing extends beyond the creation of job opportunities for those directly engaged with Costa Serena, encompassing crew and maintenance staff; it acts as a catalyst for a comprehensive and sustained economic resurgence.

Linked sectors, including lodging, dining, transportation, and retail, stand to enjoy the benefits and rewards of increased tourism. This collaborative effort represents a strategic, long-term initiative contributing to the overall economic prosperity of the nation, evoking immense pride among all Malaysians involved in the process.

Highlighted by the Honorable Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook:

With the Halal Certification of the Costa Serena, it helps to establish Malaysia as a beacon for a culturally sensitive and comfortable cruise experience. This goes beyond catering to the needs of the over 40% Muslim population in Southeast Asia but also signifies a strategic leap, positioning Malaysia as a global hub for inclusive travel experiences. A collaborative effort between Costa Cruises and Hwajing, the pilot initiative promises enduring economic benefits and lasting advantages for the nation . YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia

Costa Serena to Homeport in Malaysia in 2024

During the early 2020s, the Costa Serena will homeport in Malaysia. As soon as the cruise ship completes its first season in India, three sailings will depart from Port Klang in January.

Several local media outlets report that Hwajing Travel & Tours is partnering with Costa Cruises to offer the program. Upon arrival in Port Klang on January 17, the Costa Serena will be sold exclusively by Malaysian travel agencies.

The 2007-built vessel will offer a two-night cruise to Penang for its first roundtrip from the new homeport. Two additional Costa Serena cruises leave Port Klang on January 19 and January 22, both of which include a visit to Phuket along with Penang.

It is noted that the program has the approval of Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport, which expressed its support for the homeporting of the vessel in Malaysia. Costa Cruises’ Costa Serena sails from Taiwan and is the only vessel sailing in Asia for the company based in Italy.

Upon resuming service in May, the 3,000-guest ship serves Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand with a variety of programs. Besides offering international cruising from Mumbai, the Costa Serena will also begin offering domestic cruises in India in November. With 23 cruises to Goa, Cochin, Lakshadweep Islands, and more, the program is operated in partnership with an Indian tour operator.

The Costa Serena was built in 2007 and is currently one of Costa Cruises’ oldest ships. In 2015, the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy completed the construction of the 112,000-ton vessel for Chinese and other Asian markets. The Serena Hotel features a themed interior design inspired by ancient Roman and Greek mythology, including a large wellness center, three swimming pools, and several restaurants.

Costa Serena Review

Review of costa serena.

The 2007-built Costa Serena cruise ship is the second Concordia-class liner, with sisterships Concordia , Favolosa , Pacifica . Fascinosa and also Carnival Splendor .

The vessel (IMO number 9343132) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247187600) and registered in Genoa .

NEWS : For five months in 2023 (May through September) Costa Serena was chartered to Asian tour operators for operations in South Korea and Taiwan.

History - construction and ownership

Costa Cruises is a Genoa -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . Costa is Europe's second-largest cruise line (after MSC ) with year-round operations in the Mediterranean. Costa was founded in 1854 as a cargo shipping company. It started passenger shipping services in 1947, with regular Transatlantic crossings between Europe (Italy) and South America. In 2000, Costa Cruises was acquired by Carnival Corporation (shipowner).

Costa Serena cruise ship

The 3000-passenger ship Costa Serena is Carnival Corporation ownership, built in Italy with the European market in mind. Together with the sunken Costa Concordia, Serena is among the largest ships in Costa's fleet. She is the 12th vessel of Costa Cruises. Serena's decor is calm, with blue and orange colors and heated woods. Standard balcony cabins' size is decent - about 20 m2 / 220 ft2, laid out like newer Carnival ships' staterooms. The two big mirrors give the illusion of space. No bathroom conveniences are provided apart from shower stuff and soap, but you might ask for moisturizer or shampoo.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, Costa cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Decks and Cabins

Costa Serena staterooms (1507 total, in 13 grades) include 70 Suites, 524 Balcony, 321 Oceanview and 592 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 185 ft2 / 17 m2 (~40% of all staterooms) and have a private step-out balcony. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 28. The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites (335 ft2 / 32 m2 with terrace sized 120 ft2 / 11 m2). There are also Spa staterooms (87, including 12 Spa Suites) and single cabins (13).

The boat has 14 decks of which 8 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Ristorante Vesta is the two-tier forward MDR restaurant (main dining room) offering fixed seating for early and late dinners. The restaurant serves starters, appetizers, main courses of fish or meat, side dishes, salads and desserts (vegetarian options and special dietary requirements are also available).

Ristorante Ceres is the two-tier aft MDR restaurant, with two fixed seating options (6:30 pm or 9 pm).

The Samsara Restaurant (deck 3) offers a range of healthy food with the latest cooking techniques and a selection of special ingredients. The restaurant is free to passengers in Samsara/Spa staterooms, whilst other passengers can dine there for a charge (reservations are required).

Costa Serena also offers complimentary 24-Hour Room-Service.

Introduced in 2021, "Destination Dishes" are complimentary and available at the MDR's/main dining rooms fleetwide. They are based on individual recipes designed by a "celebrity chef trio" (Bruno Barbieri/Italian, Helene Darroze/French, Angel Leon/Spanish) and interpret the traditional food of the destinations to be visiting by the ship on the following day of the voyage.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Costa Serena ship provides a casino, theater, library, 4 swimming pools, and 5 jacuzzis plus SPA. If you plan to make the best use of the SPA, we highly recommend Samsara Spa suites and cabins. You'll find also orchids in vases, along with gorgeous bedding, herbal teas, eco-cotton bathrobes, together with a lovely Elemis goodies box in the bathroom. Costa Serena Wiki

Serena is Costa's second CONCORDIA-Class liner (first cruise on May 19, 2007, from Marseille ), with sisterships Fascinosa , Favolosa , Pacifica , Concordia ( sunk in 2012 ) and Carnival Splendor .

The ship was christened on May 19th (2007) in Marseilles, by godmother Marion Cotillard (1975-born French actress) who is best known for her Edith Piaf role in the movie "La Vie en Rose" (2007). The dockside event was hosted by Gerard Holtz (1946-born French TV sports journalist) and featured live performances by the Marseilles Opera Chorus and an onboard gala dinner at the ship's MDRS (Vesta and Ceres restaurants).

The vessel has Fincantieri Sestri Ponente yard/hull number 6130, volume 114261 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 8900 tons, max draught 8,3 m. The powerplant is based on Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V46C) with combined output 42 MW (56325 hp).

The ship's theme is "Classical Mythology" - Greek Gods and Goddesses. One of the most beautiful onboard facilities is Samsara Spa. The 99x Spa staterooms (cabins and suites) are decorated with pastel colors, orchids in vases, doors with bamboo-effects, baths with Elemis products, herbal teas, and eco-cotton bathrobes. On Deck 5 are the MDRs Vesta and Ceres (main restaurants). The top-deck waterslide and the 9-story Atrium lobby make Serena's layout resemble a "Carnival Fun Ship".

In 2009, the liner was featured in the National Geographic's documentary series "Cruise Ship Diaries".

The Costa ship's namesake is the riverboat AmaSerena (2015-built).

Costa Serena was last drydocked in 2023 (March 31 thru April 27). The drydocking project (conducted at Singapore's Semcorp Shipyard) was mainly for regular maintenance and classification works, hotel upkeep, technical overhauls, hull cleaning/repainting.

India cruise itineraries

In June 2023 Costa announced Serena's deployment in India as an extension of the ship's Asian schedule. Costa Serena's India cruises were 23 sailings (November 4th, 2023, thru December 29, 2024, including). Followed the planned voyages in East Asia (Thailand, Taiwan, Korea). The Indian program was developed in collaboration with Lotus Aero Enterprises (Costa's General Sales Agent in India).

Costa's India 2023-2024 cruises visit exclusively domestic destinations, targeting predominantly Indian tourists.

The itineraries (ranging between 2 and 10 days, all roundtrips from Mumbai ) visit Cochin ,  Mormugao/Goa , as well as the Lakshadweep Archipelago.

2-3-day itineraries visit Mormugao, 5-day itineraries visit Cochin and Mormugao, 7-day itineraries visit Cochin, Bangaram Island/Lakshadweep, Mumbai and Mormugao.

Asia cruise itineraries

On May 12, 2014, the shipowner Carnival Corporation announced that in 2015 Serena will be deployed for year-round operations in China. The cruise itinerary program was scheduled to start in April 2015, with roundtrips from Shanghai China . joining there the Costa ships Atlantica and Victoria .

On April 24, 2015, was Costa Serena's maiden visit to China, arriving for the first time in homeport Shanghai and docking at Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal. The Carnival Corporation's Costa Asia company confirmed that Costa Fortuna will join the China-based fleet in early 2016. Serena's arrival increased Costa's capacity in the Asian market by 74%, thus reinforcing Costa Asia's leading position in China. The fleet of Costa Asia ships in 2016 also included Luminosa , neoRiviera , and Fortuna .

On September 21, 2017, Costa announced a partnership with Juventus (football club). The deal allows Costa to offer exclusively a Juventus onboard experience on all Costa Asia ships. This includes Juventus football content available 24/7 on all cabin TVs, talks and presentations (club history and memorabilia) at the ship's "Juventus Museum" and purchasing branded souvenirs at the themed "Juventus Shop".

All Costa Asia ships also feature a Juventus-branded mini club and character meetings by Juve's official Jay Mascot (zebra). Onboard sports activities include a Juventus football training program (for all kids ages 5 to 14) modeled after the club's Juventus Academy (soccer school). The program is managed by Juve-trained coaches. The first-ever "Juventus Museum at Sea" was opened on Costa Serena on January 31, 2018.

costa serena cruise malaysia price

The Costa Serena is another new cruise ship to visit the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal early next year.

The 3,000 capacity cruise ship is scheduled to homeport in Port Klang in January 2024.

For its first roundtrip departure from the new homeport, the 2007-built vessel offers a two-night cruise to Penang.

The Costa Serena then offers two additional cruises from Port Klang on January 19 and January 22. Sailing for three nights, the itineraries feature a visit to Phuket, in addition to Penang.

After concluding its first season in India, the cruise ship will offer three sailings departing from Port Klang in January.

The program is part of a “pilot charter service” by Hwajing Travel & Tours in partnership with Costa Cruises, according to local media reports.

With the Malaysian travel agencies serving as the sole retailer of the sailings, the Costa Serena is scheduled to arrive in Port Klang on January 17.

According to TTG Asia, the program has the support of Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport, which expressed its enthusiasm with the vessel homeporting in a national port.

Currently sailing from Taiwan, the Costa Serena is currently the only vessel sailing in Asia for Italy-based Costa Cruises.

After resuming service in May , the 3,000-guest ship has been offering different programs in the region, serving local markets in Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand.

Starting in November, the Costa Serena is also scheduled to offer domestic cruising in India,  with a series of itineraries departing from Mumbai .

Operated in partnership with an Indian travel operator, the program includes 23 cruises to Goa, Cochin, the Lakshadweep Islands and more.

Currently one of the oldest ships in Costa Cruises fleet, the Costa Serena originally entered service in 2007.

Built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 112,000-ton vessel has been dedicated to China and other Asian markets since 2015.

With a series of amenities – including a large wellness center, three pool decks and several restaurants –, the Serena features a themed interior design that draws inspiration from ancient Roman and Greek mythology.
