13. Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, one of the most famous cities in southern America, is one of the best cities in nearby Tennessee to visit for a cultural and musical journey.

It’s a long day trip from Birmingham, but it’s certainly worth an early start, because this is the heart and soul of music, home of Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion, and the scene of many famous musicians’ rise to stardom.

There are a great many museums and galleries to visit, and plenty of great restaurants and live music venues to enjoy.

14. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is the capital of nearby Tennessee, and this large city has a real soul to it that needs to be experienced on a day trip from Birmingham.

The city is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame as a well as an intriguing museum dedicated to the famous musician Johnny Cash.

It’s a must-visit place for music and culture lovers.

The wide banks of the long Cumberland River offer an amazing, scenic spot to enjoy throughout the year, and there are great restaurants and a lively nightlife to accompany all the musical history to be found in the city.

15. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is the capital and largest city of the state of Georgia, located just a few hours to the east of Birmingham, Alabama.

Atlanta has a lot to offer, and a single day trip might not do the city justice.

Montgomery: Historic and Cultural Sites in the Capitol

Montgomery is a city steeped in culture and history and at just 90 miles south of Birmingham, the state's capitol is an easy day trip. Start your journey at the Civil Rights Memorial —designed by Vietnam Veterans Memorial creator Maya Lin—an outdoor, contemplative black granite and water installation downtown. Then walk to the nearby Rosa Parks Library and Museum , which chronicles the activist's journey with exhibits like video and photo installations and a Montgomery city bus from the 1950s. Finally, visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice , a somber, 6-acre site with sculpture, art, and an 11,000-square-foot museum with first-person accounts, videography, and other exhibits detailing the experiences of Black Americans.

Getting There:  Montgomery is approximately 90 miles and 90 minutes south of Birmingham. The quickest route is I-65 South, which takes you right into downtown.

Getting There: Little River Canyon is located 97 miles northeast of Birmingham, a one hour and 40-minute drive via I-59 North.

Nashville: Live Music, Museums, and Hot Chicken

Getting There: The park is 100 miles northeast of Birmingham, a one hour and 40-minute drive via I-59 North.

Travel Tip: While it bears the same name, the 104-foot tall DeSoto Falls—the state's highest waterfall—is only accessible via separate section of the park, 6 miles from the primary entrance.

Tupelo, Mississippi: Natchez Trace Parkway and Birthplace of Elvis

Yes, this small town in the northeastern corner of Mississippi's claim to fame is being Elvis Presley's birthplace, but Tupelo is also the headquarters of the historic 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway , a 10,000 year-old path, historically used by indigenous people, that crosses three states from the foothills of the Appalachians to the lower Mississippi River. Stop by the Visitor's Center for a short film as well as exhibits and artifacts related to the Trace's history, or experience it for yourself by hiking the 6-mile Blackland Prairie Trail.

And then, of course, visit the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum , the two-room home in East Tupelo where the star was born, which now serves as a museum and public park.

Getting There: 136 miles away, Tupelo is a two-hour drive from Birmingham via I-22 West.

Travel Tip: The Natchez Trace is best experienced via bike, so bring yours along or rent one in town.

Oak Mountain State Park: Play at the State's Largest Outdoor Area

At nearly 10,000 acres, Oak Mountain is the state's largest park and offers a variety of activities all in one place. In addition to more than 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, the park has a BMX course, cable skiing, horseback riding facilities, basketballs courts, boat and kayak rentals, a beach with swimming and fishing access, a wildlife center, and an 18-hole golf course with driving range.

Getting There: Just 20 miles south of Birmingham, the park is a 30 minute drive via I-65 South.

Travel Tip: The entrance fee ($5 per adult, $2 for children and seniors, free for children 3 and under) must be paid in cash.

Red Mountain Park: Hiking and Zip-Lining

Yes, it's technically in Birmingham, but with more than 15 miles of trails and other outdoor adventures, you could easily spend a day at this 1,500-acre urban park. Bike or hike the challenging 3-mile Ike Maston Trail, a technical track which winds up and down the mountain. For an easier stroll, opt for the 2-mile, mostly flat BMRR South rail-trail, perfect for walking with children or strollers. The park is also home to the state's largest dog park, three scenic treehouse overlooks, and an adventure area with zip lining, a climbing tower, and a tree-top obstacle course.

Getting There: The park is 7 miles south of downtown. The drive takes 15 minutes via I-65 South.

Memphis: Music, Museums, and More

This vibrant city on the banks of the Mississippi River is always worth a visit.

Start your journey by walking down famed Beale Street, a 1.8-miles stretch and National Historic Landmark that houses some of the city's best restaurants and bars, including B.B. King's Blues Club . Then head to one of the city's stellar museums, such as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art —the state's largest art museum, with over 9,000 works ranging from sculpture to textiles in its permanent collection—and the National Civil Rights Museum , with oral histories and interactive exhibits and housed in the Lorraine Hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

Cathedral Caverns State Park: Underground Wonders

Cool off on a hot Alabama day with a trip to these stunning underground caves in Woodville. Book a 90-minute cavern tour, held daily at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. to explore its unique features, like Goliath, which at 45 feet tall and 243 feet wide is one of the world's largest stalagmites. The park also offers gem mining and 5 miles of hiking trails.

Getting There: The Caverns are 93 miles north of the city. The trip takes one hour and 45 minutes via via I-65 North and AL-79 North.

Cook Museum of Natural Science

Fun and excitement combine with science and learning at the Cook Museum of Natural Science. The museum has been a Decatur institution since it first opened in 1968. Though originally just the humble insect collection of John Cook, Sr. – mainly used for training for Cook’s Pest Control’s employees – it soon grew to include wildlife, rocks, minerals, fossils, and more. After decades, the family closed the original museum and built an entirely new, state-of-the-art facility, which opened in June 2019.  

Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta encompasses 600,000 square feet of space, containing about 10 million gallons of fresh and salt water. At 11,632 acres, Oak Mountain State Park is the largest state park in Alabama, just a short drive from Birmingham. For the most adventurous, there are more than 50 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking, as well as water activities like cable skiing and boating. For those more interested in nature, Oak Mountain has several naturalist programs and educational opportunities, such as the Alabama Wildlife Center. Majestic Caverns

Majestic Caverns has long been known for its uniquely stunning beauty. Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Majestic Caverns (previously known as DeSoto Caverns) is the very first cavern recorded in the United States, dating all the way back to 1796. Its unique formations include the onyx room, passageway to a natural waterfall, and Cathedral room, which is longer than a football field and as tall as a 12-story building. National Memorial for Peace and Justice

One of Alabama’s newest attractions is the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in downtown Montgomery, opened in 2018. It is the first of its kind dedicated to the legacy of enslaved Black people in the United States. The six-acre memorial guides visitors throughout a journey of slavery in America all the way to the Civil Rights era and lingering modern-day issues as well. Each stop along the way features eye-catching sculptures, artwork, and displays from notable figures including Toni Morrison, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Hank Willis Thomas.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Ruby Falls, nestled inside Lookout Mountain, is the tallest and deepest underground cave waterfalls open to the public in the United States. Day Trips from Birmingham Alabama

Looking to get out of the city for the day? Here is my list of 10 best day trips from Birmingham Alabama. These are the kinds of things you can spend an entire Saturday doing. Wake up early, grab a coffee, hit the road to your fun filled destination, and still get home in time for dinner. Everything on this list is within a 3 hour drive from Birmingham!

1. Lula Lake Land Trust

• 2 hours from Birmingham
• Only open Saturdays and Sundays
• You must make reservations ahead of time at Visit (lulalake.org)
• There are two gorgeous waterfalls here and plenty of hiking trails
• I recommend hiking the 5.2 long Middle Trail, Trail B, Bluff Road and Trail A loop
• Hiking is easy, trails are well maintained, and this is a place for any skill level
• Park hours are 9am-5pm

2. Walls of Jericho Hike

• 2.5 hours from Birmingham
• 6.4 miles total
• Listed as “hard” on All Trails. The first 3 miles are downhill. The way back up is the hard part. 1341 feet of elevation. Still, I think this hike is quite do-able. Took us 3-4 hours and that’s with us taking our time/relaxing at the bottom. Bring snacks and water and wear good hiking boots
• We went in March and the water levels were high which I think made for the most beautiful views of the pool/waterfall (pictured above); however, we did get a little wet as the path was flooded over a bit just at the end

3. McDill Point Hike at Cheaha State Park

• 1 hour 21 minutes from Birmingham
• 4.7 miles total
• “moderate” on All Trails
• 1,043 feet of elevation
• $5 state park entry fee

4. Lake Guntersville Bike Path

• 1 hour and 25 minutes from Birmingham
• 7.2 mile paved bike path next to Guntersville Lake
• Load up your bike and fill a cooler with lunch and drinks. If its hot out, bring a bathing suit so you can dip in the water as well

5. Stephen’s Gap Cave Hike

• 1 hour and 53 minutes from Birmingham
• 1.4 miles total
• You must obtain a free permit from https://permits.scci.org and make an account to visit. This will provide you with the gate code needed for entry as well as a parking pass
• Wear shoes with good grip. The cave is wet and slippery
• You can obtain permits to rappel into the cave but you must possess the skill and equipment required to do so. People have died doing this

6. Alabama Safari Park

• 1 hour and 34 minutes from Birmingham
• Park at the visitor’s center and buy your ticket and a bucket (or 2) of food
• Drive through the Safari in your own vehicle and feed animals through the window of your car
• Zebras, camels, cows, llamas, birds, and many more will come to your window to be fed and are not at all shy
• There are also giraffes near the entrance that you can walk up to and feed over the fence
• Adult admission is $22 per person and kids get in for $17 each

7. Providence Canyon Hike

• 3 hours from Birmingham
• Hike into the canyon and do 2.6 miles total on the canyon floor or hike the Canyon Perimeter for 2.1 miles of views of the Canyon from the top
• I personally think the Canyon Perimeter provides better views and is more enjoyable
• Both hikes are easy
• Grab lunch in Columbus, GA afterward. I recommend My Boulange & Tower Pizza for French cuisine and macaroons next to a mini Eiffel Tower. Then grab a coffee at Iron Bank Coffee Co (an old bank repurposed into a cool coffee shop) and walk to Chattahoochee River Walk
• Grab a beer at The Cannon Brew Pub

8. Cloudland Canyon Hike

• 2 hours and 5 minutes from Birmingham
• 1.1 miles total
• “Moderate” on All Trails
• Follow signs to both “Hemlock Falls” and “Cherokee Falls” and see 2 different waterfalls
• Very do able for all skill levels. Lots of stairs down to the falls

9. Tigers for Tomorrow Animal Preserve

• 1 hour and 18 minutes away
• See over 160 animals including tigers, mountain lions, African lions, ligers, bears, wolves, black leopards, ocelots, tortoises and more
• Of note- these animals have been rescued from less desirable situations and CANNOT be integrated back into the wild safely
• This is a non-profit organization and your admission fee goes towards care for the animals
• Make reservations at Tigers For Tomorrow Home
• $25 per person

10. Caney Creek Falls Hike

• 1 hour 25 minutes from Birmingham
• 1.7 miles total
• All trails will take you to private property where you CAN NOT park and will be towed if you park on the road. Use google maps and it will take you down a short dirt road to a new trailhead where you will follow the signs to the parking

5 Easy Day Trips from Birmingham

Birmingham , Alabama is in the heart of the state with attractions like the Sloss Furnaces and Civil Rights landmarks like the 16th Street Baptist Church. But it’s also well located to explore other parts of the state. It’s easy to pick up  your rental car  downtown or at the airport and return to your hotel in the evening. 

The Best Day Trips from Birmingham

Distance from Birmingham: 1 hour 20 minutes

Montgomery is the capital of the state and it doesn’t have as many attractions as Birmingham, there is plenty to see. There are a number of Civil Rights memorials and museums including the Legacy Museum and the Rosa Parks Museum.

The Hank Williams Museum and the Fitzgerald Museum honor two natives of the city. Old Alabama Town is a collection of restored buildings telling the history of the state. And if that’s not enough, the landmarks in Selma and Tuskegee are not far away.

Chow down at Chris’ Hot Dogs , open since 1917, serving chili dogs and burgers to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and Hank Williams. Central is known for its artfully prepared Southern food.  Vintage Year has an extensive wine list and an adjoining cafe open for breakfast.

Distance from Birmingham: 1 hour 30 minutes

Huntsville is best known as the home to the US Space and Rocket Center , where countless rockets were prepared and where Space Camp is located. Give yourself at least three hours to wander this sprawling museum. The Huntsville Museum of Art downtown has an impressive collection of American works.

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment has shops, restaurants, offices, and artist studios as well as live music on weekends. Huntsville is also home to many craft breweries. If you’d rather stay outdoors, Monte Sano Mountain is a favorite place nearby for hikes.

Blue Plate Cafe has Southern-style specials, starting with breakfast. Happy Tummy in Lowe Mill has a vegetarian-friendly menu that includes unique sandwiches and wraps. Honest Coffee Roaster- Huntsville is a hip coffee shop that serves breakfast and lunch as well as coffee, a second location from the Franklin original.

Muscle Shoals

Distance from Birmingham: 1 hour 45 minutes

If you haven’t heard of Muscle Shoals , you’ve likely still heard one of the famous songs recorded in the area’s studios. Many are now open to visitors, including FAME Studios. Downtown Florence has fantastic restaurants and shops, including the flagship Billy Reid store.

The W.C. Handy House and Alabama Music Hall of Fame are also must-sees for music fans. Ivy Green was the home of Helen Keller, while the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House is the only home by the architect in Alabama. Further afield, visitors can drive a section of the Natchez Trace Parkway to Tom’s Wall, a memorial to the Trail of Tears .

Odette in Florence has the best food around, featuring Southern-inspired seasonal favorites. City Hardware has fantastic burgers, while Claunch Cafe has the best chicken salad. Rivertown Coffee is ideal for a light breakfast and boost.

Cheaha Mountain

Distance from Birmingham: 1 hour 15 minutes

As Alabama’s highest peak , Cheaha Mountain sits at an approachable 2,407 feet above sea level. Visitors to Cheaha State Park can hike or drive to the top, where there’s a Civilian Conservation Corps Museum.

The area sits in Talladega National Forest , a 300,000-acre preserve with trails for hiking, ATV use, and mountain biking. DeSoto Caverns and Talladega Superspeedway are a short drive away from the forest. They host concerts and driving experiences.

Cheaha State Park has Vista Cliffside Restaurant , an eatery with a scenic view. If you get the chance, dine at Pursell Farms , which has two incredible eateries.

Distance from Birmingham: 1 hour

You don’t have to be a football fan to appreciate Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama. The school has the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art , an art collection featuring contemporary works as well as self-taught Southern artists.

But if you did come to Tuscaloosa to cheer on the Crimson Tide, don’t miss the Paul W. Bryant Museum , named for the school’s famous coach. Exhibits focus on all of the school’s athletics teams, including early sports at the school, a replica of “Bear” Bryant’s office, and even his iconic houndstooth hat.

Like any good college town, Tuscaloosa has plenty of sports bars. Rama Jama is a longtime favorite, decked out in crimson, with all-day breakfast. The fried green tomato BLT is a customer favorite. Chuck’s Fish was named in honor of Civil Rights lawyer Chuck Morgan and serves a variety of American dishes.

• U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum – features exhibits of memorabilia, artifacts, and also military equipment from the American Revolutionary War to the present day
• Huntsville Botanical Garden – beautiful gardens that include a dinosaur garden, a space-themed garden, and also a storybook garden
• Monte Sano State Park – hiking and walking trails
• Harmony Park Safari – get up close to and feed many animals
• Do some shopping and/or catch a movie at Bridge Street Town Centre
• Talladega National Forest

Alabama is actually home to four national forests:

• Conecuh National Forest
• Tuskegee National Forest (see more below – under Tuskegee)
• Bankhead National Forest (see below for more info)

For the sake of a day trip idea, Talladega National Forest is closest to Birmingham. This National Forest is located in the beautiful Appalachian Mountain Range.

• Walk to High Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Alabama.
• Camp at Pine Glen Campground (and you can also see Shoal Creek here at the campground).
• Explore the many hiking trails (with a variety of trails from easy to more difficult).

The Talladega National Forest is home to Cheaha State Park – See below for more info on this State Park.

Cheaha State Park

1 hour, 20 minutes

At 2407 feet above sea level, Mount Cheaha is the highest point in the state of Alabama.  Cheaha State Park is located on top of Mount Cheaha. The park offers several hikes that lead to areas where you have gorgeous views of the Talladega National Forest.        

This park has won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for the past 5 years!

• Climb Mt. Cheaha – the largest mountain in Alabama
• Walk on the Bald Rock trail- choose between the original hiking trail or the raised boardwalk. There is also an overlook at the end of the trail with amazing views of the Talladega National Forest.
• Climb up the winding staircase to the top of The Observation Tower Building
• Hike the 1/4 mile trail to Pulpit Rock. This area also offers unbelievable views and rappelling is allowed.
• Right before you enter the park, you can check out the Native American Relic Museum.
• In warmer/nicer weather enjoys swimming, bike riding, and also gem mining.

Entrance into the park is free for children 3 and under, 4-11 years olds cost $2, 12+ cost $5, and Seniors cost $2.

Lynchburg, Tennessee

Lynchburg is another one of our favorite day trips from Birmingham. You may not think of a liquor distillery as a family-friendly activity, but it is a very interesting tour. And, the rest of the town is full of character and fun things to do (candy store, anyone?)

• The Lynchburg Hardware & General Store has two floors full of unique Jack Daniels Merchandise
• Eat at Miss Mary Bobo’s – A historic house that serves home-cooked meals family-style to all guests.
• For only $1, you can tour the Moore County Jail Museum.
• Stop in The Lynchburg Cake & Candy Company for some sweet treats. They have also won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for the past 5 years!
• Stroll through the Historic Downtown Lynchburg Square – and also see the Court House, shops, restaurants, and other local attractions.
• Located next to Jack Daniel’s Distillery is the Lynchburg Winery.
• Check out the local Harley Davidson shop.

Tuskegee, Alabama

Tuskegee offers some excellent learning experiences for the whole family. You can enjoy historical and natural sites here. Since you can be here in a little over 2 hours, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy all that Tuskegee has to offer.

• Tuskegee has two National Park Sites – Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (history of pilots during World War II) and Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site (learn the history/inventions of George Washington Carver and see the burial places of Booker T. Washington and the George Washington Carver).
• Tuskegee National Forest – This is the smallest National Forest in the country with many hiking and biking trails. Don’t forget your hiking gear and bicycles!

Tupelo, Mississippi

• Natchez Trace Parkway Visitors Center –  Information Center, bookstore, exhibits, a short movie, restrooms, nature walk, and offices.

• Tombigbee State Park – Fishing, Hiking & Biking Trails, Swimming Beach

Mentone, Alabama

If your family loves spending time outdoors, then Mentone is the perfect day trip for your family. Mentone is a small town located at the top of Lookout Mountain. It has the highest elevation of any town in the state! You can be here in less than 2 hours, and it’s one of those great day trips from Birmingham.

• Little River Canyon Nature Preserve – hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, and rock climbing (this area has forested uplands, waterfalls, canyon rims, bluffs, pools, boulders, and also some sandstone cliffs to enjoy and explore!)

Bankhead National Forest is known as “the land of a thousand waterfalls” and is popular for its many outdoor activities. This forest covers 180,000 acres and offers many bluffs, canyons, waterfalls, springs, and lakes.  Double Springs  is located in the  Bankhead & Sipsey Wilderness  Area.

15 Brilliant Day Trips That Are Less Than Two Hours From Birmingham

Birmingham is great but sometimes you've got to get out of the city and spend the day somewhere new...

Okay, so there aren’t any beaches around Birmingham. But because it lies near the ‘geographic centre’ of England, you can pretty much get anywhere in a few hours – in fact, whichever you travel, there’s always something exciting or idyllic to come across. There are some spectacular day trips around Birmingham, from heart-racing thrills to jaw-dropping scenery. So, get your anorak out, put your sandwiches in the car, and treat yourself to one of these wonderful day trips from Birmingham . We know, it’s going to be hard to tear yourself away, but you won’t regret taking a break from the city in one of these places.

1. Warwick Castle, Warwick

An hour’s drive from the centre of Birmingham lies one of the most magnificent castles in the UK. The original frame of Warwick Castle was erected in 1068 by William the Conqueror, so it has seen nearly 1000 years of British history. This is reflected in the architecture, which is diverse in style and character because the castle has been refurbished many times. There are 64 acres of gardens surrounding the castle, designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and landscaped to perfection. Peacocks call the gardens home, adding to the grandiose atmosphere; an atmosphere wholly absent from the dark and spooky dungeons of the castle.

The Great Hall is full of artefacts from the armoury and, when you get peckish, you can either eat in the Undercroft Restaurant or sit by the river Avon and eat your sandwiches.  You can get a direct train from Birmingham to Warwick Station , which is around a mile from the entrance to the castle. If you drive, there is a car park, but expect to pay to leave your car there. To get your tickets to Warwick Castle head here .

2. Alton Towers, Staffordshire

Everyone in the UK has heard of Alton Towers . It’s been one of our favourite day trips from Birmingham since we were kids. With both a huge theme park and a waterpark, you could spend a few days here, exploring or simply riding Oblivion until you feel sick. There are over 40 rides at Alton Towers theme park and enough slides at the waterpark to keep anyone entertained for a day.

Theme parks are notoriously expensive, but if you bring a packed lunch and buy tickets online in advance, you can save some money. It’s not possible to travel to Alton Towers on public transport from Birmingham, unless you’re up for getting a train and a bus, then walking for quite a while. But it only takes an hour and 20 minutes to drive there.

3. Twycross Zoo, Twycross

Twycross Zoo is just a 40-minute drive from Birmingham and it’s well worth a visit, even if just for the apes. It’s unique in the UK, in that it houses every type of great ape , including bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans and the king of them all: gorillas. The recent birth of a baby northern white-cheeked gibbon and a black-headed spider monkey is indicative of the huge part the zoo plays in the conservation of critically endangered species. You can also see snow leopards, Sumatran tigers, rhinos and tiny antelopes of the dik-dik variety.

There are places to eat at the zoo and picnic benches dotted around if you’d prefer to bring your own lunch. And be sure to head to the Gruffalo Discovery Land ! You can pre-book tickets on the website  and save 10% of the cost.

4. Kinver Edge, Staffordshire

If you thought people stopped living in caves millennia ago, think again. People lived in these quirky rock houses at Kinver Edge  as recently as the 1950s. There are three separate rocks where people lived, plus an Iron Age hill fort , with the most famous of these homes cut from Holy Austin Rock . Restored to Victorian-style cottages (based on former occupants Mr and Mrs Fletcher), inside you’ll find it just as when people lived here.

The houses at Vale’s Rock aren’t restored but can be seen, while you can climb into the houses at Nanny’s Rock and wander around the empty rooms l make sure to look up the ‘devil’s chimney’. The Rock House walking trail is the best way to take it all in, leading you through a heathland abuzz with wildlife, children’s play areas, two explorable areas of rock houses and atop the hill fort. There’s also a Tea Room run by the National Trust, which is home to the only cave-dwelling, secondhand bookshop in the world, The Book Nook.

Kinver Edge is about an hour’s drive from Birmingham City Centre.

5. Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

Of all the Birmingham day trips, you probably know this one. Stratford-upon-Avon is known worldwide as the birthplace and final resting place of playwright and poet William Shakespeare . Subsequently, it is also home to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre . Naturally, the town draws tourists with an interest in Shakespeare from across the globe. There are five houses associated with Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway, so it’s therefore advisable to pay for a ticket covering entrance to all five.

The house in which Shakespeare was born and grew up is an amazing place to visit, as is Mary Arden, Shakespeare’s mother’s, farm, which will take you back in time to the Tudor period. It still functions as a working Tudor farm, and there are plenty of animals to coo over. You can also visit Anne Hathaway’s cottage, which was her childhood home. It’s a quintessential, English Tudor cottage with a beautiful garden to explore and a lovely little café attached.

Shakespeare’s New Place is the site of Shakespeare’s final place of residence. Sadly, the house has been demolished but the gardens are still there and make for a pleasant walk. There is also a little museum to commemorate the importance of the site. The final place of interest is Halls Croft , home to Susanna, Shakespeare’s daughter. Her husband was a physician, so the gardens are filled with plants that have medicinal qualities. Subsequently, the displays are based around Tudor medicine.

If you’re looking to watch one of Shakespeare’s plays then you can always visit the Royal Shakespeare Theatre . You can even participate in a Tudor lesson at Shakespeare’s old school room, if you buy tickets on the website .

You can get the train to Stratford-upon-Avon from Birmingham Moor Street Station.

6. Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire

Kenilworth Castle is one of the most storied royal castles you’ll find in England. Built in the 1120s, the likes of King John, John of Gaunt and Henry V are all associated with it. Most famously, however,  Elizabeth I gifted it to her “favourite”, Robert Dudley , Earl of Leicester, in 1563. He is the one to convert the castle into a lavish palace fit for his queen. After the English Civil War, the castle’s fortifications were dismantled, but much of it has remained unchanged ever since Elizabeth I’s reign.

You can spend all day exploring these spectacular ruins – mostly built from local red sandstone – and learn about the castle’s long-associated history with royalty. Better yet, check out the Elizabethan garden – a recreation of the original built by Robert Dudley. Climb towers,  discover interactive exhibits and dress-up experiences, and learn about 900 years of history . To get your tickets head here .

7. Cannock Chase, Staffordshire

Some say Cannock Chase is haunted , which might be why this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is so often overlooked. The Chase is teeming with woodlands, parklands, rivers, canals heathlands and more to discover. There’s so much packed into this tiny but varied landscape, meaning your day trips from Birmingham will never grow boring.

The range of wildlife found here is just as varied and impressive – including native fallow deer , all four of Britain’s six reptiles, rare and endangered birds, as well an unusual hybrid between bilberry and cowberry plants, the Cannock Chase berry . There are plenty of activities for kids to do too – like the Gruffalo trail or Go Ape treetop adventure. Take a leisurely stroll, an arduous hike, or even a bike or horse ride through this serene escape in the Midlands.

You can drive to Cannock Chase in 45 minutes, while the closest train station is Hednesford.

8. Malvern Hills, Worcestershire

The Malvern Hills are officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty . The view from these hills is amazing. Malvern is a town once famed for its natural springs, and you can see the important role that water has played in the town’s history with a visit to St. Ann’s Well . The building was erected in 1813 and houses a marble spout and basin, carved beautifully. St. Ann’s Well is also the site of a café, which is perfect for refreshing yourself after a lovely saunter around the hills.

The main walking routes use parts of the Worcestershire Way, which, in its entirety, runs for over 30 miles. However, if you like a walk but you’re not up for a huge trek, there are walks of around a mile or so. Details of the different routes often travelled by visitors to the area can be accessed on this handy website , which also includes maps of the routes. You can wander through the hills and beautiful fields of wildflowers, only an hour from the busy streets of Birmingham.

An hour on the train from Birmingham New Street will get you to the town of Malvern.

9. Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire

The Iron Bridge that greets you as you drive toward Ironbridge Gorge was the world’s first ever iron bridge, built in 1779. The area was once mined for its valuable contents, including coal, limestone and iron ore. As a result of this, many people flocked to the area, such as blacksmiths, because of the abundance of material needed to craft their wares.

The bridge was built to demonstrate the versatility of and importance of iron. While it was once surrounded by smoke and pollution as mined material crossed the River Severn , it is now a very calm and beautiful place to sit. You can just drive up to the bridge and come and go at your leisure, for free, but a visit to the museum costs £33 if you buy it online .

10. Clent Hills, Worcestershire

Clent is undeniably one of the prettiest villages near Birmingham . Just 12 miles away, it’s only overshadowed (quite literally) by the National Trust’s Clent Hills . There are three different hills to climb – with panoramic views over the Cotswolds, Shropshire Hills and Welsh borders – but we’d recommend heading to the summit of Clent Hill.

Here you’ll find the sham megalithic site, The Four Stones , which were created in the eighteenth century by Lord Lyttleton. Fancy somewhere a bit less busy? Go up Walton Hill for some wistful wildlife spotting! And no Birmingham day trips are complete without a walk to the pub – the country pub, The Fountain, serves real ales and proper pub food.

You can be in Clent in 30 minutes by car, while the closest train station is in Hagley.

11. Peak District

The Peak District is absolutely huge, sprawling out into South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Greater Manchester. There is a year’s worth of day trips contained within this area. The Peaks are the perfect place to unwind and have fun with your friends in the lovely, fresh, countryside air – with repeat day trips from Birmingham a must.

The town of Bakewell is a brilliant place to start exploring the Peaks. It is the home of the Bakewell tart ! If you’ve never eaten a proper Bakewell tart before then prepare yourself for something entirely different to the shop-bought variety. There are loads of little tea rooms to sit in and shops are selling the kinds of things you’d expect to find in the countryside – artisan jams and lovely old books.

Walking to the top of Mam Tor won’t take you long and the view from up there is astonishingly beautiful. Or you could take a stroll along Stanage Edge and gaze out toward the stunning Derbyshire countryside. Alternatively, venture underneath Peveril Castle into Peak Cavern , more commonly known as The Devil’s Arse.

Peak District is an hour and a half to drive to the Peak District from central Birmingham.

12. The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds cover 787 square miles, so there’s definitely a lot to do there! And this really should be many day trips from Birmingham. One great place to visit in the Cotswolds is Chedworth Roman Villa . The villa was uncovered during the Victorian period and it has been preserved so that it’s possible to view Roman mosaic floors and some remnants of the baths. A café serves as a nice pit stop before you take a stroll around the grounds and take in the idyllic Cotswold hills.

To see the characteristic, Cotswolds stone cottages, visit Chipping Campden , from which you can walk to the stunning Broadway Tower. Broadway Tower is striking, standing tall atop the site of an ancient beacon. The view from the top of the tower is outstanding and there is also a little café onsite.

Driving to the Cotswolds will take you around an hour.

13. Trentham Monkey Forest, Stoke-on-Trent

Not content with your monkey fix at Twycross Zoo, you can head to Trentham Monkey Forest , where you can walk freely with Barbary macaques. Follow a mile-long woodland trail through the heart of Trentham Estate and immerse yourself in the everyday antics of these creatures. Watch as they swing from trees and play with their pals — and be prepared to share the path. (Primates have the right of way, of course.)

It’s a bit tricky to get to Trentham Estate via public transport, as it involves a train and two buses, so not one of the best day trips from Birmingham if you don’t own a car. However, if you do drive, it only takes around an hour. Tickets are available online, and you can save 10% if you book via their website .

14. Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

What a spectacularly, lovely town Royal Leamington Spa is. Well-loved for its gleaming Regency architecture , flourishing green spaces , and sophisticated high-street shopping , there’s never a bad time for a trip to the Midlands answer to Bath. Check out the famous Royal Pump Rooms – home to Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum – take a stroll around the Victorian, beautifully landscaped Jephson Gardens , and dine out at the town’s seemingly endless supply of incredible and independent cafes/bars/restaurants – as day trips from Birmingham go, this is the height of class.

You can take a direct train to Royal Leamington Spa from all three of Birmingham City Centre’s train stations, all taking less than an hour.

15. Waterfall Country, Wales

Okay, so this one’s going to take a little bit longer than two hours (closer to three by car), but it’s one of the best day trips from Birmingham you’ll ever experience. Waterfall Country is situated on the south-westerly edge of the Brecon Beacons (or Bannau Brycheiniog, as we should be calling it), the Vale of Neath in South Wales is well known for its unusually high number of waterfalls . There are far too many to name them all, but you’ll find three of the grandest, most gorgeous and closest on the Afon Mellte .

Sgwd Clun Gwyn (the ‘fall of the white meadow’), Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn (the ‘lower fall of the white meadow’) and Sgwd y Pannwr (the ‘fall of the woollen washer’) will keep you mesmerised for hours. Meanwhile, Sgwd Yr Eira (‘falls of snow’) on the Afon Hepste is very famous as you can actually walk behind them!  If you want a Hollywood-level famous waterfall, however, you’ll have to visit Henrhyd Falls . These falls were used in scenes for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises as Batman’s iconic hideout, the Batcave.

It takes 2.5 hours to drive to Waterfall Country from Birmingham.

1. Stratford-upon-Avon

Cobbled streets and Tudor houses are legacies of the 800 years of history in Stratford-upon-Avon. There’s plenty to do on a day trip to this mediaeval town – the birthplace of William Shakespeare . 

Catch a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or visit the thatched cottage that belonged to Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare’s wife. 

Cruise the River Avon on Vintage Edwardian boats, then drop by the Dirty Duck, a pub that’s existed since the 1700s and is a favourite watering hole for the Royal Shakespeare Company actors.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: It’s 40 minutes by train from Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford-upon-Avon or a 1-hour drive (40 km.)

2. Black Country Living Museum, Dudley

The Black Country Living Museum is an open-air living museum comprising over 50 historic buildings. It showcases crafts with actors reenacting life during Victorian times. 

In many ways, the Black Country Museum functions almost like a real town! 

But that’s not all there is for a day trip. Explore the underground mine or ride a tram that will take you around the area and onto the canal arm. 

The Black Country Living Museum is a great option for school trips, too, as it’s not too far out from Birmingham and offers plenty of history.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Take a 20-minute train from Birmingham New Street to Tipton. It’s then a 15-20 minute walk to the Black Country Museum. 

Alternatively, you can drive about 30 minutes from Birmingham city centre to the Black Country Museum, which is 15km away. 

3. Peak District National Park

Peak District makes an invigorating Birmingham day trip amidst nature. Gorgeous rolling hills and dramatic escarpments are just some of what this national park has to offer. 

There’re different trails for varying skill levels, so no worries if your walking shoes haven’t seen much action. Visit the magnificent Chatsworth House, one of the grandest homes in the United Kingdom, or take a cable car up to The Heights of Abraham. 

We suggest exploring a Peak District attraction in the morning and end the day trip with a pint in one of the quaint local pubs. Plan your hikes ahead of time with Peak District’s online trail maps. 

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Driving the 90km distance takes about 1.5 hours and is the best way to explore Peak District.

You could also take a train from Birmingham New Street to Edale (via Sheffield) or Chesterfield. Then grab a taxi or bus to the national park.

Day tours of the Peak District via coach trips are another option.

4. Malvern Hills

If you enjoy walking, the panoramic views of the Malvern Hills offer a fine escape from the city bustle. Stretching across the three counties of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, you won’t run out of trails to explore in the Malverns.

Take a sip from the spring of Malvern (which supplies water to the Queen) while you’re there.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Take a train from Birmingham New Street or Birmingham Snow Hill to Great Malvern, Colwall, or Malvern Link. 

Or do the 62km drive from Birmingham, which takes about an hour. Best places to park include Gardiner’s Quarry, British Camp, or Upper Beacon Road to access the hills.

5. Worcester, Worcestershire

A Birmingham day trip to Worcester would be remiss without visiting Worcester Cathedral. This stunning structure paints a restful picture as it overlooks the River Severn.

6. Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

Royal Leamington Spa is a town of Regency architecture interspersed with beautiful parks and gardens . Its nearby location from Birmingham makes it great for a day trip.

Leamington Spa boasts several attractions, from the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum to designer shops and art boutiques. You could download some self-guided trails as the town centre is very compact and walkable, including a trek around Old Town Leamington.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: A train from Birmingham Moor Street or New Street to Royal Leamington Spa takes about 35 minutes. Alternatively, you could drive 50km to the town, which takes almost an hour. 

7. Warwick Castle, Warwickshire

Warwick Castle makes a fun and exciting day trip, from a tour of the towers to the secret hideouts and draughty dungeons below. 

Located on the banks of the River Avon, this West Midland castle is one of the most impressive in the United Kingdom and an unmissable attraction in the small town of Warwick. 

There are frequent live demonstrations and themed events. You can then walk around the town centre for its charming half-timbered houses and cafes, or stroll in the lovely Mill Garden next to Warwick Castle. 

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: There’s a 1-hour direct train to Warwick from Birmingham Moor Street, then a 15-minute walk to the castle grounds. 

It’ll take about 45 minutes (54km) from Birmingham city centre if you’re driving, and you can park around Stratford Road in Warwick.

8. Cadbury World, Bournville

One of the most enjoyable day trips from Birmingham is Cadbury World in Bournville — whether you’re a chocolate lover or otherwise. The village was created in the late 18th century when the Cadbury family relocated their chocolate factory there. 

Cadbury World is now located within the original 1990 factory. Learn all about chocolate at the premises and stop by the many sampling stations. Then stock up on your chocolates before heading off!

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Take a 12-minute train from Birmingham New Street to Bournville. Or you could drive the 9km distance, which takes about 17 minutes. 

9. Alton Towers Theme Park, Staffordshire

Alton Towers is the largest theme park in the UK, so you can anticipate plenty of thrilling rides to enjoy on a Birmingham day trip. There’s an outdoor and indoor tropical lagoon themed water park, a luxury oasis spa, and an excellent golf course. 

Hop onto The Smiler (the world’s first 14-loop rollercoaster) or get an adrenaline rush on the Galactica ride. But if thrill rides aren’t your thing, don’t worry, as there’s something for everyone.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Take the train from Birmingham New Street to Derby, then change for Uttoxeter (the nearest station to Alton Towers.) This takes 1h 20m. Then grab a taxi for a 15-minute ride to Alton Towers. 

Driving 84km via the M6 to Alton Towers will take around 1 hour 15 minutes. 

10. Harry Potter Studio, Watford

What’s a better day trip than a visit to the Harry Potter Studio in Watford? It’s where the Harry Potter films were made and is now a favourite attraction packed with old sets, props, and more. 

The studio tour is self-guided but designed, so you get to explore some of the most iconic Harry Potter scenes like Snape’s Potions Classroom and The Great Hall. 

It’s an insightful experience as you see how the films were brought to life. You may even experience some movie magic yourself with a flying broom and a green screen. So, grab some butterbeer and be ready to spend 3-5 hours at the Harry Potter Studio.    

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: We’d all love to Apparate . But since that’s not possible, the next best thing is to hop on the train from Birmingham New Street to Watford Junction. From there, take the shuttle bus to the studio. 

Driving will take about 2 hours via the M6 and M1 routes, covering 164km. 

11. The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds covers almost 800 sq miles, so there’s plenty to explore for day trips from Birmingham. There are many villages to visit, so select a few when planning day tours to the area. Popular villages include Chipping Campden, Broadway, and Castle Combe.

In Chipping Campden, you can see lovely stone cottages, and if you’re up for a brisk, hour-long walk, you can get to the striking Broadway Tower. The Broadway Tower sits atop the site of an ancient beacon and offers an outstanding view. 

You should also drop by the Chedworth Roman Villa for its Roman mosaic floors and Blenheim Palace in Woodstock.

However, many of the villages are reachable by train. For Chipping Campden, you can take the train from Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford-upon-Avon, then get a bus to the village. 

12. Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire

The town of Ironbridge Gorge is home to the world’s first iron bridge and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are several small museums, many of which are open-air and interactive, including the Blists Hill Victorian Town. 

At Blists Hill Victorian Town, you’ll get to experience life in Queen Victoria’s era. Meet Victorians in their authentic shops and cottage, buy curious goods, and watch tradespeople from a bygone era in action. 

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Ironbridge Gorge town is about 60km from Birmingham. Driving takes an hour and is the best way to get there for a day trip. 

You can also take a train from Birmingham New Street to Telford Central, then grab a bus or taxi to the town. 

13. Telford, Shropshire

There are lots of interesting sights in and around Telford for a perfect day trip from Birmingham. 

Telford Town Park offers a myriad of activities. Rock-climb or zipline at its Sky Reach adventures, or drop by the Exotic Zoo. The zoo is great for small children and school trips with its collection of birds, mammals, and amphibians. 

The Royal Air Force Museum is in nearby Shifnal, offering amazing aircraft exhibitions in its hangars. Entry is free , and you’ll learn plenty about aviation in the First and Second World Wars at this museum. 

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: Driving to Telford takes about 45 minutes (55km), and it is the best way to explore the area. The Royal Air Force Museum, for example, is a 13-minute drive from Telford.

A train from Birmingham New Street to Telford Central takes 36 minutes, and a bus from Birmingham Coach Station takes 55 minutes. 

14. Lichfield, Staffordshire

Lichfield is home to the dramatic three-spired Lichfield Cathedral, set amidst the gorgeous English countryside. The view from its approach is worth the visit alone. 

However, this 800-year-old cathedral isn’t all Lichfield has to offer. Erasmus Darwin (forefather of the Darwin we often hear of) lived here in the 18th century, and his house is open to visitors. 

Lichfield is also the birthplace of literary figure Samuel Johnson, and you can visit the museum that showcases his life and works.

How To Get There, Distance, Estimated Time: A train from Birmingham New Street to Lichfield City takes around 35 minutes. Driving will take you just over 30 minutes to cover the 30km distance.

15. Severn Valley Railway

Severn Valley Railway is home to steam trains in the West Midland. It’s a full-size standard-gauge railway line that regularly runs between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. 

If heritage trains fascinate you, you shouldn’t miss a trip on this vintage railway. 

A single journey takes about 70 minutes, and you can visit the Engine House at the Highley stop for interactive railway exhibits and impressive engines.

2. Bibury Village, Cotswolds

One of the best day trips from Birmingham has to be the  beautiful Cotswolds village  of Bibury. This riverside village is often dubbed the prettiest village in England and is famous for being home to Arlington Row.

Owned by the National Trust, Arlington Row, is a small but picturesque row of houses , so quintessentially English that they even feature on the inside cover of the British passport.

Other than this beautiful row of houses, Bibury is also home to Bibury Trout Farm. Spanning 15 acres of land, the trout farm is one of the oldest in England and visitors even have the opportunity to catch their own dinner! Bibury is south of Birmingham and takes 1 hour 20 minutes to reach by car via the M5. If you prefer to visit the Cotswolds by train from Birmingham you can travel to Cheltenham Spa Station and get a 30-minute taxi for the rest of the way.

3. Warwick & Warwick Castle

Warwick is a small town located along River Avon which forms part of the West Midlands Region in England. The very first thing that comes to one’s mind when we hear Warwick is its magnificent castle founded by William the conquerer. To be very honest, Warwick is more than that, and there are many interesting things to do, considering how small the town is.

Seep through thousand years of jaw-dropping history as you walk through the rooms of Warwick Castle.  The castle is huge, sits right next to River Avon and is an unmissable attraction in Warwick. You come to Warwick to marvel at the Warwick Castle and hear about the stories of heroes and warriors.

Right next to the castle is the adorable The Mill Garden – a privately owned garden that allows public access. A great place to take a stroll or catch a glimpse of the castle.

4. Shrewsbury

Are you looking for a lovely relaxing place to visit on your day out from Birmingham? Shrewsbury is the perfect place to relax and wander.  The entire town centre is now within easy walking distance, bounded on all sides by the river loop.

The buildings in Shrewsbury are of all ages, many mediaeval and Georgian – and new ones too, all huddled together in a tiny half-square kilometre of space .  Much of the town centre is occupied by local shops, cafes, wine bars and restaurants.

The list is long of things to do in Ludlow in this walled medieval town including a river walk, a castle, markets, and great food to try. You will notice the people who live there take very good care of their home with beautiful baskets of flowers everywhere and they keep it neat and tidy.

The castle square market is open daily, except Tuesday . They do vary the stalls with speciality markets on Thursdays and Sundays. The stalls are full of local produce and handmade items. You will find many tempting treasures that may be difficult to resist.

6. The Black Country Living Museum

You don’t have to travel far out of Birmingham to have a fun Birmingham day out. For a unique day trip from Birmingham, head to The Black Country Living Museum . The Black Country Living Museum does what it says on the tin; it’s an open-air living museum dedicated to historical life in the Black Country. 

You can walk around Victorian-style houses and speak to its inhabitants (museum staff who are in character and experts on their subject), experience a class from 1912 or visit an old-fashioned pub and have a pint (!). You can even visit the sweet shop and get some vintage sweets!

This museum works almost like a functioning town. The cherry on top is a visit down into real coal mines. After a full day of time travel, you’ll need some fish and chips from the fish shop… they’re genuinely delicious.

The first time I visited the Black Country Museum , it blew my expectations out of the water, I could have wandered around there for days making it a great family day trip from Birmingham.

How to get there from Birmingham ?

You need to head to Dudley which is just a 30 minute drive from Birmingham , or this works as a great day trip from Birmingham by train because you can catch a train from Birmingham New Street to Tipton which takes around 20 minutes. Once you’re in Tipton, you need to walk about 15 – 20 minutes to the museum .

7. Bourneville

Bourneville is the perfect day trip for families , or in fact, anyone with a love of chocolate! The area was created in the late 18th century when the Cadbury family relocated their chocolate factory there.

The family named the area Bourneville after the local river Bourn and added the French word for town ‘ville’. The area soon grew with the creation of a model village similar to that of Saltaire built by Titus Salt in Yorkshire.

In this village, the Cadbury family built housing, schools, parks, and even a village green for their workers to enjoy. This was revolutionary at the time as it meant the workers at the Cadbury factory were well paid and looked after by their employers. 

Today you can enjoy a stroll through the leafy streets and parks in this popular area of Birmingham .  

You can of course also visit the main attraction in the area – Cadbury World. Enjoy an interactive tour and learn all about chocolate production! 8. Harry Potter Studio

The   Harry Potter Studio Tour  in Watford is an absolute must for Harry Potter fans. This is where the actual Harry Potter films were made and is now a popular attraction full of old sets, costumes, props and more.

It’s a self-guided tour but it is perfectly designed so you follow the route through some of the most iconic Harry Potter sets including the Gryffindor Common Room , Snape’s Potions Classroom , The Great Hall, The Ministry of Magic and more.

The studios lift the veil on the magic so you can see exactly how they brought Harry Potter to life and it’s a thoroughly insightful and unforgettable experience. There’s a huge amount to look at and read as they’ve covered every little detail down to the sketches that brought these sets to life. What’s more, you get to experience some magic for yourself such as flying a broom in front of a green screen and sipping on Butterbeer.

10. Castle Combe Village, Cotswolds

11. Stratford Upon Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon is a medieval town located in the West Midlands . The town is also famous for being the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is the most famous English writer who is left with an impressive legacy including the plays ‘Romeo and Juliet ‘ and ‘ Hamlet ‘. Therefore, Shakespeare’s Birthplace is the most famous landmark in Stratford-upon-Avon and is also the main reason why many tourists visit the town.

Stratford-upon-Avon makes a wonderful day trip from Birmingham , especially for Shakespeare lovers. Not only can visitors visit his birthplace but they can also watch a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Only one and half hours away on the fastest train, London is one of the best day trip destinations from Birmingham . There is so much to do and see in London that you will leave wishing you had more than just one day. But sometimes time is short, and luckily, a lot of the main attractions in London are quite close to each other, so it is possible to cover quite a bit of ground in one day. 

If this is your first time in London, you’ll have to start at the Palace of Westminster or Houses of Parliament , of course. Aside from having Big Ben, you will be able to visit Westminster Abbey in the vicinity. 13. Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the most popular day trip destination s in the United Kingdom. The mystery behind the prehistoric monument’s origins and purpose is a major draw for tourists.

When you arrive at Stonehenge, take a trip to the visitor’s centre where you can find an exhibition dedicated to the history of Stonehenge and life during the times when Stonehenge was constructed.

S chool is out and summer is here, which means if you’re a parent, you’ve likely heard two dreaded words — “I’m bored” — from your kids at least once already.

After all, while there are plenty of places to visit and things to see in Alabama that are just as much fun for adults as they are for kids, they aren’t exactly inexpensive.

So with that in mind, here’s a look at a few free or cheap places to visit throughout the state, from museums and carnivals to roadside attractions and more, that will keep your kids entertained all summer long.

Explore the Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Want to get your kids outside and away from their screens for a day? Birmingham Botanical Gardens is exactly where you need to be, as it offers a free place for kids to explore the natural world around them. The gardens consist of 67 acres and feature more than two dozen diverse spaces for families to enjoy together. There are also free programs you can join in on, including a weekly story time the gardens and guided tours. You can even take a self-guided field trip together, complete with a free discovery backpack and treasure map, during your visit.

Hop a ride at Kiddie Carnival

If you’ve got a kiddo that loves the rides at the fair, you might need to plan a trip to the Kiddie Carnival in Athens, Ala. The Athens Lions Club Kiddie Carnival, also known as the Kiddie Carnival, is a seasonal attraction open June 22 through July 29 that features rides especially designed for kids between the ages of 2 and 10, including a small Ferris wheel, rocket ships, carousel, train and more. There’s no admission fee, and each ride is 50 cents, making it a fun and inexpensive way for the whole family to spend an afternoon.

In addition to relaxing or catching some waves at the beach, during a visit to Gulf State Park you can take a guided hike, hit the biking trails, drop a fishing line or make a stop at The Nature Center, which is a living museum of plants and animals native to the Gulf Coast region, for $2 per car. Alabama is full of unique roadside attractions worth detouring for, but Bamahenge might be the most popular. Located in Elberta, Ala., Bamahenge is an exact, full-size replica of Stonehenge — the prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England — making it the perfect way for kids to get some hands-on learning when it comes to history without having to spend a buck or cross any oceans. Bamahenge was made from fiberglass by artist Mark Cline in 2012 and has been attracting plenty of attention ever since despite being off the beaten path.

Find Dinosaurs in the Woods

If you decide on visiting Bamahenge, you might as well as check out a few more of Mark Cline’s creations that now serve as a unique roadside attraction in Elberta, Ala., as well. Located along the road leading to Barber Marina, Dinosaurs in the Woods consists of four fiberglass dinosaurs, a Brontosaurus, T. Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops, hidden among the trees. Just think of it as prehistoric scavenger hunt your kids will love, but be warned: the dinosaurs can be surprising tricky to spot — making the moment you do that much more exciting.

Inside the Alabama Department of Archives is the Museum of Alabama, a free way to learn more about our state’s rich history through immersive displays, interactive exhibits and more. In the Hands-On Gallery and Grandma’s Attic section of the museum, kids can play dress up, participate in crafts and other hands-on activities with a wide range of themes, including space, nature and more. Don’t forget to check out the other exhibits at the museum, including “The Land of Alabama” and “Alabama Voices,” as well during your trip.

Head to the theaters

Looking for something to do with the kids that doesn’t involve being out in the heat? Premiere Cinemas, which has several locations in Alabama including a theater in Spanish Fort, Pell City, Gadsden and more, will be offering free screenings through June and July at select times on Wednesdays and Thursdays as part of its Summer Kids Fest . With popular flicks like “Trolls Band Together,” “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” and “TMNT: Mutant Mayhem” on the roster, there’s bound to be a movie showing your kids won’t mind sitting still for.

Once a smoky industrial powerhouse known as the “City of 1000 Trades,” Birmingham in the 21st century is vibrant, diverse city that’s home to a plethora of distinctly local attractions. 

Whether you’re exploring Digbeth’s jaunty street art, sampling some of the country’s most unique gastronomy or strolling the city’s colorful canals, it’s the creativity and warmth of its people that brings out the best of Birmingham. 

Conveniently located smack-dab in the center of the UK , Birmingham is easy to reach – but much harder to leave. Here’s how to make the most of your time in Britain’s second city.

Stroll Birmingham’s finest stretch of canal

Birmingham was built around its vast network of canals, but if you want to see them at their finest then take a stroll along the meandering 45-minute stretch between Gas Street Basin and the University of Birmingham. 

The lively waterside bars, bistros and restaurants of Brindley Place and The Mailbox are ideal for refreshments but once you walk down the Old Line canal past Five Ways, the towpath turns into a bucolic cornucopia of overhanging foliage and sudden tranquility. The elegant university grounds are a treat to explore too, as is the underrated Barber Institute of Fine Arts . 

Stay at a Grand institution

Once host to the likes of Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin, the Grand Hotel was the most opulent of Victorian Birmingham’s hotels, later falling into disrepair before closing for good in 2000. After a 20-year slumber, this local institution on Colmore Row re-opened in May 2021 following a £45m facelift. 

Originally opened in 1879, this Grade II-listed building still retains some of its wonderful period features, including the famous grand staircase furnished by gilded marble columns and the extraordinary Louis IV-style grand ballroom. The hotel’s stylish rooms also offer impressive views of the St Phillips Cathedral grounds (known locally as Pigeon Park).  

Uncover Digbeth’s street art

Digbeth sprawls out from the city center’s southwestern fringes and is crammed with some of Birmingham’s liveliest bars – and it’s impossible not to be struck by the quality and volume of the neighborhood’s extensive street art and graffiti. The rough-and-ready industrial streets around the Custard Factory form a perfect canvas for the city’s talented creatives to display their work. 

The scene is driven by superb local artists such as Annatomix and gent48 . Make sure to head to Floodgate Street, Gibb Street and Lower Trinity Street for some of Birmingham’s boldest street art.

Experience Victorian Birmingham at the Back to Backs

Talking in dramatic terms about Birmingham’s industrial past is easy; conjuring the feel of daily life from this era is hard. Except, that is, at one corner of the city center where you can get a vivid sense of working-class Birmingham’s living conditions over 100 years ago. 

Located on lively Hurst Street, the Birmingham Back to Backs are the last remaining example of the city’s 19th-century back-to-back terraced houses. Today, you can take guided tours led by passionate locals who will evoke the challenges – and joys – of life in these dense buildings. Make sure to book ahead of time – and don’t miss the 1930s-era sweets shop on the corner.

Enjoy the view from the secret garden

With curvaceous oddities like the Bullring and the Rotunda giving Birmingham one of the UK’s more distinct skylines, it’s worth finding a spot to take it all in from above. The best viewing platform in the city isn’t in a skyscraper, but rather humbly located on the 7th floor of the Library of Birmingham in Centenary Square. 

What the library’s Secret Garden lacks in towering height, it more than makes up for with genuinely panoramic outdoor views, plenty of room to wander and a beautiful elevated green space for summertime relaxing above the hum of the city.

Try a Balti in its hometown

Birmingham has more Michelin-star restaurants than any other city in the UK outside of London, yet the dish at the heart of the city’s character is a humble one-pot stew: the Balti. Devised by Birmingham’s Pakistani community in the early 1970s, the Balti is a fiery curry cooked quickly with the freshest ingredients over a searing hot flame. 

While you can now find Baltis on menus across the city, the Balti Triangle neighborhood a couple of miles south of the city center is the dish’s spiritual home. Head to original pioneer restaurant Adil’s or modern favorite Shababs on the Ladypool Road for a taste of the Balti at its best. 

Get outdoors in the Lickey Hills

With more than 8000 acres of award-winning green spaces and parks, Birmingham is one of the greenest cities in Europe. But if you want to combine that green space with gorgeous panoramic views and charming woodland trails then head out to the Lickey Hills Country Park.

Just 10 miles southwest of Birmingham city center, the hills are easily reached by train, bus or car and are ideal to walk at any time of year. Make sure to head up to the almost 300m-high summit of Beacon Hill, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of Birmingham’s skyline to the north and the distant Malvern Hills to the south.  

Drink the Stirchley beer mile

Stirchley’s rise as craft-beer haven has been as pleasant as it is unexpected. With several splendid pubs and taprooms conveniently spaced apart, intrepid craft-beer aficionados can take on Stirchley Beer Mile and sample the finest this south Birmingham neighborhood has to offer. 

From Cork and Cage at the north end to GlassHouse in the south, with stops at vibrant taprooms Attic Brew Co and Birmingham Brewing Company  (to name but a few) along the way, there are a plethora of spots to enjoy IPAs to your heart’s content. 

Trace Birmingham’s diverse musical heritage

From the reggae beats of UB40 to Black Sabbath’s pioneering heavy-metal sound and Duran Duran’s bouncy new-wave pop, few cities in the UK have produced music as diverse as Birmingham.

The volume and color have now been turned up further with the fresh addition of Albert’s Schloss , a boisterous Bavarian-style bar and restaurant set across two floors.

Learn about how Birmingham became a jewelry capital

As a manufacturing powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution, Birmingham had many strings to its bow – with one of the most enduring bring the jewelry trade. Much of that was centered around the Jewellery Quarter, a handsome neighborhood that to this day produces 40% of the UK’s jewelry. 

With its immaculately preserved workshops and live demonstrations, the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is a fascinating time capsule into Birmingham’s heritage. Located across from Snow Hill Station, the Great Western Arcade is an ornate Victorian delight filled with independent sellers, while the Piccadilly Arcade across from New St Station has an even more interesting story. Dating back to 1925 and containing a lavishly painted ceiling fresco, this arcade was once an Edwardian cinema – which explains the sloping floor.

Just a short 14-mile train ride north of the city in the nearby town of Lichfield lies one of the most unique cathedrals in the entire country.

See a real “Peaky Blinders” set

Led by the indomitable Tommy Shelby, the popular BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders has brought Birmingham (and its memorable local accent) to a global audience. Even though the show isn’t shot on location in the city, you can see an authentic historic Peaky Blinders set at the Black Country Living Museum . 

As well as seeing the famous canal-side and yard filming locations, visitors can explore a painstakingly recreated 19th-century industrial landscape. Fans of the show should try to time their visits with the regular Peaky Blinders Nights .

Victim identified after 3 shot, 1 killed in Birmingham Saturday shooting in East Lake neighborhood

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Birmingham Police are investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday in the 8200 block of 1st Avenue North.

According to BPD, around 7:40 p.m. Saturday, officers received a call of a shot spotter alert. Upon arrival, officers learned that two vehicles, in the 8300 block of 1st Avenue N. near the Shell gas station, had been involved in an accident. Then, going WB into the 8200 block, officers located two more wrecked vehicles in the roadway. Upon further investigation, officers observed a third vehicle that went through the fence of East Lake Park.

When officers approached the wrecked vehicle that went through the fence on East Lake Park, they observed three victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. BPD says that there were two male victims and one female victim. According to BPD, two victims, one male and the female, were transported to UAB by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Personnel with life-threatening injuries.

BPD says that the third victim, 19-year-old Martavius Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to BPD, preliminary investigations have revealed that they believe a shootout occurred between parties that were in the three wrecked vehicles that officers found in the 8200 block of 1st Avenue N. Authorities say that they have observed numerous shell casings in the roadway and numerous firearms near the vehicles or inside the vehicles.

“Everything that we’ve observed tonight has led us to believe that every party who was involved in the shootout was actively shooting an one another. The two cars that were in the 8300 block of 1st Avenue N., everything that we’ve gathered, one of the drivers may have been fleeing the gunfire. The accident in the 8300 block of 1st Avenue N, was actually a reaction from someone fleeing the shootout. Those three cars, in the 8200 block of 1st Avenue N., everything that we’ve observed, either inside the vehicle or near the vehicle, lead us to believe that at least one person who was inside those vehicles had something to do with the shootout.”

Birmingham Police say that the 8000 block to the 8400 block of 1st Avenue N will be blocked off for “possibly hours” in the South/North East Lake communities. Officials also say I-59 that runs through 1st Avenue N. exit near East Lake is completely blocked off to help with traffic going onto 1st Avenue N.

At this time, BPD says there is no one in custody. We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
