La Bella Puglia! Named one of the “20 Places to See Now” by National Geographic Traveler, this bike tour takes you through the heart of fascinating Puglia in Italy’s southern region, with landscapes and villages steeped in Greek, Norman, and Arab history. Begin your journey in Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, and pass through Otranto, a picturesque town whose complicated yet intriguing history makes it one of Puglia’s most sought-after places. Then, you will pedal to the Baroque capital of the Salento area, Lecce. Heading north, you will ride through one of the enological gems of the south of Italy to Alberobello, the Trulli region, spun by clusters of fantastic conical dwellings surrounded by enormous, gnarled olive trees. You end your journey in Matera, a city in the Basilicata region, world-renowned for its sassi (cave dwellings). Of course, there is plenty of time to indulge in spicy handmade orecchiette, bruschetta covered with juicy tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and grilled calamari. The warm hospitality of the region and friendly conversation greet you at every turn! If this sounds like an unbelievable plan, you can book your “La Bella Puglia” tour with dates starting in May through October. #CycleAndSavor #CulturalCycling #GourmetPedals #TourDeFlavor #BikeAndBiteAdventures #CulinaryCycles #TasteOnTwoWheels #RollAndRelish #CyclingCuisine #EpicureanEscapes #GlobetrotterCycles #TrekAndTaste #CulinaryJourneys #Puglia #CulturalCyclist #CiclismoClassico

Nestled along the shimmering Adriatic Sea lies a hidden gem that captures the hearts of all who coast along its shores—Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. From picturesque seaside villages to rugged cliffs adorned with olive groves and ancient Roman ruins, this region embodies the essence of Mediterranean beauty. Did you know? Historically, Croatia was caught among the maritime empire of Venice, the landlocked Austro-Hungarian empire, and the Ottoman Empire, which spanned both land and sea. As a result, the region’s cultural heritage bears the fruits of all three of these cultures. But what truly makes Istria special? The people. With their warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage, the locals of Istria welcome you, inviting you to partake in age-old traditions and savor the flavors of their land. Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Rovinj, savor freshly caught seafood in Pula, or indulge in world-class truffles from the region’s forests, each encounter with the people of Istria leaves an indelible mark on your soul. Discover this gem on our “Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula” tour! Join us with shoulder season dates including May 25, September 7 or 28. #CycleAndSavor #CulturalCycling #GourmetPedals #TourDeFlavor #BikeAndBiteAdventures #CulinaryCycles #TasteOnTwoWheels #RollAndRelish #CyclingCuisine #EpicureanEscapes #GlobetrotterCycles #TrekAndTaste #CulinaryJourneys #PedalToPlate #CulturalCyclist #TastingTrails #WanderWheelers #AdriaticMagic #Istria #Croatia

🍦🇮🇹 The great gelato debate continues: where in Italy have you tasted the MOST heavenly gelato? One of our favorite stops in Southern Italy is Arte Fredda in Alberobello. At Arte Fredda, only the freshest ingredients are used, such as the renowned Bronte pistachios from Sicily, or the almonds from the groves along quiet country roads. But it’s not just the ingredients that make this a top gelateria, imagine fruits filled with gelato, cakes painted by hand, and wine sorbets. This isn’t just gelato, it’s a culinary creation. With flavors as exotic as mango, prickly pear and mulberry, there is bound to be a flavor that pleases everyone. What a fantastic start to the week! Thank you to first-time Alumna, Suzie M. for sharing her incredible feedback about our Bike Across Southern Italy tour! "It was the absolute best trip I’ve ever been on. The riding was challenging, beautiful, and quiet. The hotels were centrally located, unique, and luxurious. The cultural tours were perfectly arranged after our ride, before dinner, and private. Meals and wine pairings were not only delicious, but educational. The guides were so much fun. Warm, friendly, supportive, and super attentive. By the end of the 11 night journey, I felt that I had made new friends/family. It was a superb trip! Can’t wait to hit Corsica/Sardinia in May!" #biketour #adventuretravel #activetravel #luxurytravel

Everything you need to know about cycling in France your independent guide

How to join a French cycling club

If you’ve ever wondered about how to join a cycling club in france, then britta sorensen has this guide to getting you in on the action..

French cycling club

Join our Facebook group to meet other cyclists in France

Joining a cycling club in France can seem a daunting task. I mean, where do you start? How do you find a club? Which one do you choose? And why? Road bike? MTB?  Female? Are you looking for a family friendly club or one for your kids to join? Are you looking for a club that's social and runs events, or do you just want someone to ride with at weekends? Are you looking to enter competitions?

Answering these questions can help you find the right club for you.

Where do I start?

Finding a club

If you have ANY friends (or friends of friends) who cycle in france then that's the best place to start. If they are members of a cycling club already, then they will be a great source of initial information and may be full of useful knowledge.

However, if this isn’t the case, then you can start by looking on the amateur cycling website at the ‘ Listes de Clubs Cyclistes ’ in your region, e.g. Midi-Pyrénées has eight departments to look at and within each department there are many clubs for you browse. You will also be able to view how many races they organise each year, gauge the member demographics and get a contact name and email number for any clubs that interest you.

Other options open to you are to go direct to all the specific sports associations or federations – UFOLEP, FFC, FSGT and FFCT:

a)  UFOLEP -  Union française des œuvres laïques d'éducation physique

Ufolep logo

The UFOLEP website is set up to support sports and cyclotourisme. The primary aim of UFOLEP is to be inclusive and it embraces a commendable ‘Sports for All’ approach. Ufolep has an advantage if cycling isn't your only sport. You can have your GP sign your health certificate (which you need to join a club – see further below) for all the sports you (might) do. This way, your 'cycling licence' allows you to compete in trail running, course d’orientation, country skiing events, etc. If you want to enter competitions, cross the “en compétition” boxes. In general UFOLEP  cycling clubs are really relaxed, although they do organise competitions. For road cycling there are several categories. There is normally only one female category but there are three male categories. Winning a competition gives you points and once a cyclist has 30 points he/she is promoted to the next level.

In any case, once you’re in the http://www.ufolep.org  site you have two ways to search for a cycle club and they will more or less get the same result.

b) FFC – Fédération Française de Cyclisme

Federation Francaise de Cycle logo

FFC clubs are generally competition-orientated. Here you’ll see a map of France with the words ‘Les Clubs – Trouver un Club’. Click this and you’ll see another map open up with all the regions and a drop down arrow box for the cycling discipline you’re specifically interested in OR alternatively you can just go for all of them.

Similarly, if you know the department number you’re looking to search, you can enter that instead, with the 'Toutes les disciplines' giving you a huge list of available clubs.

From here you can open up club details, contact names and local websites.

c) FSGT – La vie associative au Coeur du sport

Fédération Sportive et Gymnique du Travail logo

This  website caters for many sports and makes sport a way of life. If you click on this site and look down to the right there will be a small icon for you to click on called ‘ Clubs Près de Chez Vous’. Once done, you’ll see three menu drop boxes for Region, Department and Activity, with a ‘Rechercher’ button to click once you have filled in your drop down boxes. Again, if you know your region and department all you need to do is click on ‘cyclism’, cyclosport’, ‘cyclotourisme ’ for all the club names to appear.

d)   FFCT - L a fédération française de cyclotourisme

FFCT logo

You can click on this site and see on the right side ‘Chercher un Club’ with a drop down menu for the department. Once selected, a new map of the area will appear with green icons for the clubs in that area. If you hover your mouse over each one you’ll see the club details appear with the option to ‘voir le club’ to take you to the contact details for the club.

One thing is for sure: your geographical knowledge of France will improve immeasurably conducting these searches!

The association with a club is important if you are planning to race and take competitions seriously. If you plan to enter a UCI Grand Fondo qualifier you will need a FFC race licence, but for some other competitions a UFOLEP or FSGP will be fine. The advantage of having these licences is that you can enter a race using them – you just quote your club name and the organisers will know that you have already gone through the medical certificate process to become a member.

Finally, doing some further research using the club website and asking the designated contact person the relevant questions can further narrow down your choices.

So you’ve narrowed it down to a club – what happens next?

What to expect from the club

There are some details that you may want to ask them before you join:

  • What is the demographic makeup of the club? Is it a 'young' club or mostly populated by retired men? How many females are there? Do they cater for youngsters?
  • How often do they go out for rides? Do they cater for both road and MTB (VTT) riders?
  • To what extent do you get involved, such as volunteering at their local club events? Are they actively running their own events, as well as providing opportunities to enter various competitions? How social are they?
  • What is the club kit like and are you expected to compete in it and wear it for all club rides? (If it's ugly, this may be a dealbreaker...)
  • Insurance information – what are you covered for by the club and federation 'assurance'? Also check your personal insurance as well as your household insurance.
  • Are you expected to attend club meetings about the running of the club or organising events?
  • If your French isn't great, are there any English-speakers who could help you with the logistics and help you settle in?
  • Do they have a code of conduct?
  • Do they use social media to update members about club rides and competitions, or social events? How else do they communiate with members?

So, let’s assume that you’ve conversed with the main contact and perhaps even been invited to try out a few rides to see if they meet your expectations – it is really reassuring if they offer this.

Different clubs will have different styles of running and also individual codes of conduct and behaviour for their members. This is standard practice and operationally should be a good thing as it will mean they are inclusive and respectful to all members.

Once decided, you will be asked to complete some or all of the documents below to become a member:

a) A ‘Fiche-de-Renseignment/Inscription’ form to become a member. This will require all your personal details, any relevant medical information, emergency contact, etc. It may also ask for your permission to let the club take charge in the event of an accident, plus consent to have your photos included on their Facebook site or in other publicity materials.

b) At the same time you will be asked to complete the licence application form for either the UFOLEP, FFC or another affiliated federation to cover your insurance. Some clubs allow membership of two federations, such as both UFOLEP and FFC. They will ask you to complete the personal details part and will complete the rest on your behalf (it may relate to the club). You may also need to choose your desired discipline(s) at this stage.

c) You may need to sign the club's ‘internal regulations’ or ‘code of conduct’ – this states the aims of the club, how they expect members to behave, what the club sets out to achieve and how it intends to operate. This is important to understand as it may relate to behaviour out on club rides as well on social events, or the use of social media; it will also state your insurance cover. As with anything you put your signature to, read carefully before signing to be fully aware of the club regulations.

d) You will need a medical certificate (dated within a stipulated timeframe) stating that you can cycle in and out of competition. See here for more on medical certificates .

The entire cost varies between clubs but usually costs around €50 and is an annual fee.

For entering the Federation competitions, you may need to add a competition card for each desired discipline: road, mountain biking, cyclocross. Each 'box' costs a small surcharge; you are free to choose only one or several, and it will be adapted to your choice when you complete all the documents with the club member.

For example, to participate in road competitions you must first complete a UFOLEP licence. To race in the National UFOLEP road races you must firstly compete in the departmental UFOLEP races, followed by the regional to be able to reach the National UFOLEP annual event. The club will advise all members of this if you're interested.

However, competition could be just one for the motivations for you to join: getting involved in social events and taking the family along to events could be another reason. Some clubs are excellent for families and have an ‘ ecole’  (school) for teaching youngsters bike skills and road safety awareness in a fun and engaging way.

Other advantages of joining a club will be to learn the necessary skills to ride in a group/peloton and the etiquette for following this if you have never done this before.

So, whatever your motivations for wanting to join, now you have a few starter pointers, what are you waiting for?

Paris 2024 Road Olympic Team 1130x600

USA Cycling Announces Olympic Games Paris 2024 Road Cycling Team

Dygert, Knibb, McNulty, Sheffield, and Jorgenson will represent the United States in the Road events in Paris.

On Friday, USA Cycling announced the athletes who will compete in the Time Trial and Road Races at the Paris Olympics.

The 2023 UCI Road World Championships was one of the major opportunities for athletes to punch their tickets to Paris. Chloé Dygert (Brownsburg, Ind.; CANYON//SRAM Racing) earned her spot for the Games after winning the 2023 UCI Time Trial World Championships, qualifying her for both the Time Trial and Road Race. Last week, USA Cycling officially announced her selection for the Track Cycling team , as well. Dygert will compete in the Time Trial (July 27), the Road Race (Aug. 4), and the Team Pursuit (Aug 6-7).

The 2024 USA Cycling Time Trial National Championships was the final chance for riders to qualify for the Olympics. The flat course in Charleston, W.V. was designed to closely emulate the Paris course, ensuring that the winner at U.S. Pro would be well-suited for the Olympic Games.

In the Elite Women’s race, professional triathlete superstar Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.; Trek Factory Racing) claimed victory in Charleston, qualifying her for the second and final Olympic spot, having already qualified in Triathlon. Knibb was the first American athlete to qualify in two sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

For the men’s team, reigning National Champion Brandon McNulty (Phoenix; UAE Team Emirates) was the race favorite in Charleston. He won by 58 seconds, qualifying him for his second Olympic Games, where he will race the Time Trial and Road Race. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, McNulty ignited the Road Race with 25km to go attacking with eventual race winner Richard Carapaz of Ecuador. Carapaz attacked with 6km to go and rode to the line, while McNulty finished with the chase group, taking sixth place.

Team USA earned three men’s spots where all three athletes will compete in the Road Race and two in the Time Trial. Joining McNulty are Magnus Sheffield (Pittsford, N.Y.; Ineos Grenadiers) and Matteo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho; Team Visma – Lease a Bike) both making their Olympic debuts in Paris. Sheffield was selected for both the Time Trial and Road Race, while Jorgenson will focus his efforts solely on the Road Race.

Sheffield has established his place among the world’s best in the Time Trial, racing to several podium finishes this year. In his first race of the year, he finished a mere 16-seconds off the Time Trial World Champion Remco Evenepoel at the Volta ao Algarve. Both McNulty and Sheffield delivered American dominance at this year’s Tour de Romandie Stage 3 Time Trial finishing first and second. In May, Sheffield went on to make his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia, finishing third in the Stage 7 Time Trial.

Jorgenson will compete in the Road Race after his exceptional rides this year. In his first year riding with Team Visma – Lease a Bike, he became the third American ever to win Paris-Nice, a race that’s been held every year since 1933. This race marked another historic moment with Olympian McNulty finishing on the podium in third. Additionally, Jorgenson secured a victory at Dwars door Vlaanderen with a decisive solo attack in the final kilometers of the race.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games run from July 26 – August 11 with cycling competing every day of the Games. The Individual Time Trials will be contested on Saturday, July 27, with the women’s race starting first at 8:30 am ET. The Men’s and Women’s Road Races will be held on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, respectively.

2024 U.S. Olympic Road Team:

Chloé Dygert (Brownsburg, Ind.; CANYON//SRAM Racing) - Time Trial & Road Race

Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.; Trek Factory Racing) - Time Trial & Road Race

Brandon McNulty (Phoenix; UAE Team Emirates) - Time Trial & Road Race

Magnus Sheffield (Pittsford, N.Y.; Ineos Grenadiers) - Time Trial & Road Race

Matteo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho; Team Visma – Lease a Bike) - Road Race

Chloé Dygert (Brownsburg, Ind.; CANYON//SRAM Racing):

“It’s truly a blessing. I am truly blessed to be selected for my third Olympic Games in USA colors. Thankful for those who go above and beyond behind the scenes to make sure I’m the best I can be on and off the bike. We will see you in Paris.”

Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.; Trek Factory Racing):

“I’m very honored, grateful, and excited for the opportunity to represent Team USA with USA Cycling. It would not have been possible without the support of my amazing family, friends, coaches, manager, sponsors, and USA Triathlon. Cycling has a very steep learning curve, and I am simultaneously excited and nervous for what lies ahead.”

Brandon McNulty (Phoenix; UAE Team Emirates):

"I was really excited to go to the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. That top result – 6th in the road race – just motivates me all the more. The race was super aggressive, I relive it all the time. At home in Arizona and Girona, I'm already training with 100% focus on Paris. My goal? Bring back a medal!"

Magnus Sheffield (Pittsford, N.Y.; Ineos Grenadiers):

“It feels like a dream come true. Going to the Olympics was one of my biggest goals growing up. I’m incredibly proud to represent the U.S. in Paris as well as all the people that have helped me along the way. I don’t think it will fully sink in until I’m there.”

Matteo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho; Team Visma – Lease a Bike):

“The Olympics were always a part of my childhood. I remember spending entire summers watching sports I had never heard of and admiring the athletes. For sure it had a big effect on me and was one of the reasons I decided to pursue a career as a pro athlete. Being able to race in Paris, especially following the best year of my career, is a dream come true.”

Tanner Putt – USA Cycling’s Director of Road:

“I am thrilled to join the 2024 USA Olympic Road Team for my first Olympic Games this summer. It’s a tremendous honor to work alongside these athletes and represent our nation at the world's largest sporting event. The men and women selected have demonstrated dominance in their respective disciplines and are strong contenders for medals in Paris. Go Team USA!”

Great Respected Accomplished Virtuous Eloquent Legend Words that can describe @romainbardet - and we're set for one last dance @LeTour together🙌🏻 But our journey together doesn't stop there...Onto 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣! We've left a clue for what lies ahead next year😜🪨… pic.twitter.com/ioLnv7PzQZ — Team dsm-firmenich PostNL (@dsmfirmpostnl) June 21, 2024

Odds Outlook: Tom Kim arrives as favorite at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

For the second time in three weeks, a Donald Ross design will be the examination. The Detroit Golf Club, built by Ross in 1916, will host for the sixth consecutive season.

Led by 2023 champion Rickie Fowler, a full field of 156 players will have plenty of daylight and opportunity to move up the FedExCup rankings. The Rocket Mortgage Classic represents one of six remaining weeks to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs in August and one of three chances, if not already entered, to reach The Open Championship at Royal Troon in the middle of July.

Kim (+1200) , who just turned 22 earlier last week, tried to become just the third player in the 73-year history of the Travelers Championship to go wire-to-wire, but the Korean was defeated on the first playoff hole by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (not entered). Just missing out on his fourth-career win, the world No. 16 returns to Detroit on a streak of 10 straight including two top-five paydays in his last four events. All four rounds last week were 66 or better, and he will need a similar total (22-under) to challenge again.

Returning to his roots in the Northeast, Cameron Young (+1400) found the extra gear he had been missing since cashing T9 at the Masters. Becoming the 12th player on the PGA TOUR to post a sub-60 score with 59 in Round 3, the Scarborough, New York, native backed it up with 66 in Round 4 to hit the top 10 for the first time since early April. The big hitter will enjoy the accessible fairways and greens at Detroit Golf Club and has two additional par 5s to rack up Par-Breakers. The last time he was in the Motor City, he posted a 63 in Round 2, signed for 21-under and shared second place in his only visit in 2022. Remember, his 59 at TPC River Highlands did NOT set or match the course record. Jim Furyk posted 58 in 2016 and has that honor.

Every shot from Cameron Young’s 59 at Travelers

Akshay Bhatia (+2200) , the 29th-ranked player in the world, is coming in hot! Trending beautifully over his last three events (T22 Memorial, T16 U.S. Open and T5 Travelers), the two-time PGA TOUR winner looks to keep the momentum rolling. A winner already this season at the Valero Texas Open on 20-under, the last open event on a par-72 layout, Bhatia knows a number in that neighborhood is required again. After missing the cut on his first visit last year on 2-under, he will need more birdies to find the weekend in 2024.

Making his first start at the Detroit Golf Club, Min Woo Lee (+2200) cruises into town on the back of five consecutive T26 or better paydays since falling short of the weekend at the Valspar Championship. Sitting 63rd in the FedExCup standings, the West Australian native knows he needs to keep pegging big paydays to stay inside the top 70. A two-time winner in Asia last fall, the world No. 36 is looking for his first win on TOUR. Currently ranked inside the top 20 in par-5 scoring, he will enjoy four opportunities each round to make birdie or better.

Continuing the trend of international players at the top of the BetMGM board, Englishman Aaron Rai (+2800) should continue his superb tee-to-green activity in Michigan. The recipe for a shootout is to convert GIR into Birdies, and not many find more greens in regulation. Sitting eighth in Driving Accuracy and sixth in GIR, the flat stick needs to be hot to pick up his first trophy on the PGA TOUR. Cashing six straight, including T19 at the U.S. Open, his form is not in question.

Why Alex Noren (+2800) did not return for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic after posting T4 in 2021 is uncertain. Returning last season, he cashed again in the top 10 with T9 after four rounds in the 60s. The 41-year-old from Sweden, currently ranked No. 55 in the OWGR, is not eligible yet for The Open Championship even though he has collected 11 T26 or better finishes from 15 events this season, including nine of his last 11.

After three weeks on the sidelines, a well-rested Maverick McNealy (+2800) finds himself in the top eight choices this week. The 28-year-old, who did not qualify for the U.S. Open or surrounding Signature Events, was red-hot before his vacation. The month of May saw him pocket T23 at the PGA Championship, followed by T17 at Colonial before closing 65-66-65 at the RBC Canadian Open for T7. The former Stanford man is looking for his first win on TOUR and makes his fourth start on the Bent/Poa putting surfaces that routinely produce buckets of birdies.

Taylor Pendrith (+2800) was in the middle of an inconsistent 2024 before winning at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson to begin the month of May. With his first PGA TOUR victory trophy on the shelf, the Canadian has continued to produce. Not satisfied, the 33-year-old backed up his victory with a top-10 payday (T10) at Wells Fargo the following week. Missing the cut at the PGA Championship was followed by four straight of T33 or better, including T16 at the U.S. Open and T23 last week at Travelers. The 2022 runner-up here also cashed T14 in 2023.

Note: Along with Fowler, 2021 winner Cam Davis and 2019 champion Nate Lashley are in the field this week.

Here's a look at other notable odds via BetMGM.

  • +3300: Keith Mitchell, Will Zalatoris, Stephan Jaeger
  • +4000: 2023 winner Rickie Fowler, Davis Thompson, Robert MacIntyre
  • +5000: Adam Svensson, Ben Griffin, Chris Kirk, Matt Wallace

How the Rocket Mortgage Championship works:

  • A field of 156 players.
  • The Official World Golf Rankings: 10 of the top 50 players.
  • After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the top 65 and ties.
  • The purse of $9.2 million sees the winner pocket $1.65 million plus 500 FedExCup points.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is being contested at Sahalee Country Club, a visually intimidating major test that will be a challenge for the world’s best players this week in Sammamish, Wash. Difficult conditions are often the great equalizer at major championships, leveling the playing field for the 156 athletes competing, but some players still have slight statistical advantages on which they hope to capitalize as they work to capture some of the biggest titles in all of women’s golf.

Take a look at just a few of those athletes teeing it up this week at Sahalee for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship:

Allisen Corpuz

Allisen Corpuz currently leads the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy this season, hitting the fairway off the tee 86.6 percent of the time, a number that equates to her finding the short grass on 518 of 598 total drives. Sahalee has incredibly narrow visuals off the tee, views that are intimidating to even the most storied of LPGA Tour veterans. But with tee shots that fly as straight as those of Corpuz, the Hawaii native should be able to consistently find the fairway throughout the course of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, something that should translate to more hit greens in regulation and birdie opportunities for the 26-year-old.

According to KPMG Performance Insights, Corpuz has struck the ball well in major championships over the last two seasons, ranking fifth in strokes gained ball striking (+1.46), sixth in strokes gained approach (+1.06) and sixth in strokes gained total since the major season began in 2023. She became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links last July and finished in the top 15 of three other major championships last season – tying for fourth at The Chevron Championship, tying for 15th at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and tying for sixth at the AIG Women’s Open.

Her 2023 major prowess hasn’t yet translated to the 2024 season, but considering her success at some of golf’s most challenging venues, Corpuz is a player who shouldn’t be left out of the contention conversation this week in Washington.

Brooke Henderson

Brooke Henderson might seem like an obvious player to watch at Sahalee Country Club, particularly as she won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship the last time the championship was contested at this venue in 2016. But her statistics indicate that a third major title could be just around the corner for the Canadian, and why couldn’t it come at a place at which Henderson has a resoundingly positive history?

According to KPMG Performance Insights, the 26-year-old leads in strokes gained total per round in all major championships since the beginning of the 2021 season, picking up an average of 2.15 shots on the field in each round of the LPGA Tour’s five major tournaments in the last four years. In that span, Henderson has won her second career major title at the 2022 Amundi Evian Championship and earned an additional nine top-15 finishes, one of which came earlier this season when she tied for third at The Chevron Championship. She is also at the front of the pack in major championships when it comes to scoring average and score to par, recording a 70.60 stroke average and shooting 59 under par across the 17 majors that have been played since the start of the 2021 LPGA Tour season.

As it pertains to Sahalee, Henderson is fairly long and fairly accurate off the tee, hitting it an average of 264.375 yards with her driver and finding the fairway 74.1 percent of the time while doing so. She is ranked ninth in strokes gained driving (+0.63), 10th in strokes gained total (+1.39) and 17th in strokes gained tee to green (+1.14) on the LPGA Tour so far this season, per data provided by KPMG Performance Insights. Couple that excellent ball-striking with a venue at which Henderson knows how to win, and the Canadian just might be deadly this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Rose Zhang recently collected her second career LPGA Tour title last month at the Cognizant Founders Cup, winning by two shots over Madelene Sagstrom at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J. While it doesn’t even slightly compare to the narrowness that Zhang and the rest of the field are facing off the tee this week at Sahalee Country Club, Upper Montclair is quite tight in spots, making her recent success in the Garden State a potential weapon for Zhang to wield in Washington State.

Zhang ranks 16th on the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy, hitting 279 of her 350 total fairways this season, a conversion rate of 79.7 percent. According to KPMG Performance Insights, the 21-year-old is tied for fifth in most strokes gained tee to green per round in major championships over the last two seasons, as Zhang has picked up 1.62 shots on the field with her long game. Additionally, Zhang is ranked second in strokes gained approach (+1.34), third in strokes gained total (+1.98) and fifth in strokes gained tee to green (+1.46) so far this year, an amalgamation of stats that could be a deadly combination at a course like Sahalee that requires precise ball striking.

The Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 9 is another player who seems to thrive in difficult conditions, as Zhang finished in a tie for eighth at last year’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course and then tied for ninth at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and she just might contend again this week at Sahalee considering that fact.

Madelene Sagstrom

It was Madelene Sagstrom who went toe-to-toe with Zhang last month in New Jersey, and while the Swede ultimately fell to the American at the Cognizant Founders Cup, her performance in the Garden State could be a good indicator of how she fares this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Even though Sahalee is much narrower off the tee than Upper Montclair, her ability to keep the ball in the fairway that week led to a litany of birdie and eagle opportunities, many of which the 31-year-old took advantage of en route to posting a four-round total of 22-under to finish 13 strokes ahead of her next closest competitor.

Sahalee likely won’t be giving up that many shots to the 156-player field this week, but Sagstrom is a player who, on paper, just might be able to throw a few punches at this formidable venue. She isn’t exceptional when it comes to driving accuracy, only finding the fairway 66.9 percent of the time off the tee, but Sagstrom does rank 10th on the LPGA Tour in average driving distance (273.640 yards), length that is typically a benefit during major championships. She is also ranked 12th in strokes gained driving, according to KPMG Performance Insights, picking up 0.59 shots on the field with her shots off the tee.

Sagstrom has also been deadly with her putter this year, ranking fifth on the LPGA Tour in strokes gained putting (+0.96), and if she can combine solid ball striking with a hot putter, we might see the Swede contend for her second career LPGA Tour title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Andy Murray wins at Queen’s in 1000th tour match

The loud shout of “let’s go” reverberated around the brick terraces over looking the grass. Andy Murray had won his first point at Queen’s Club in west London, and the UK grass-court tennis season was truly in session.

It was the first point of Murray’s 1000th ATP Tour match, against Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin, and the five-time champion in West Kensington came through a three-set match that showcased the highs and lows of his late career, as well as some of those of all 1000 matches. 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The symmetry was appropriate, in a match that veered this way and that before settling on the Briton’s side.

He dropped in another let’s go on the first point of the final game, serving his way to victory as the sun dipped over the grandstand. The next point, a swished regulation forehand in the net, was met with resigned anguish. That’s pretty much how the whole thing went, with Murray spending the second set looking all of his 1000 matches, 37 years, and one organic hip, jumping from his chair at the changeover as early as he could to avoid tightening up. But the 739th win duly arrived with a sweet, short cross-court backhand volley, a drop of his new Yonex frame to the floor, and a roar.

That brought up a win percentage of 73.9, that puts him fifth among active men’s players, behind Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner — exactly the company one might expect. Murray said on court that he’d “not got too many wins this year, and any win you can get is important.” One or 1000, it matters not.

‘This is where it all began for Murray’

Analysis from Charlie Eccleshare at the Queen’s Club in London

This was where it all began for Murray, 19 years ago. His first ever tour-level win came at Queen’s in 2005, against the then world No. 110 Santiago Ventura Bertomeu in what was the Scot’s second ever main-tour match. He then backed that up by beating the big-serving American Taylor Dent, before losing in the third round against former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson after succumbing to several prolonged bouts of cramp.

A lot has changed since then.

On Tuesday against Popyrin, he became the 19th player to reach the 1000 milestone, and a near-constant in Murray’s tennis life has been good performances at Queen’s, where he has won a record six titles (five singles and one doubles). He’s yet to reach the quarterfinals in the singles here since winning the last of those five titles eight years ago, but there was still something comforting about Murray walking out for the teatime slot, which he has occupied so often here and at Wimbledon over the last two decades.

He was given a huge reception by a crowd which knows this will likely be Murray’s last ever appearance here. They were similarly enthused for the opening stages of this match, as Murray outmaneuvered a more powerful opponent like he has done so many times before and won the first set thanks to a single break of serve. After so many empty seats at the French Open, it was a big positive to have a packed-out crowd, all fixated on the action. Murray lost the second set — he never did like doing this the easy way — and with the support teams positioned right next to the court, his coaches were right in the line of fire for a few customary ventings of frustration.

Fifty Shades of Andy Murray

It was a jovially aggravated exchange with umpire Mohamed Lahyani that seemed to galvanise him though, grabbing a break at the start of the decider with a brilliant cross-court forehand return winner and a backhand passing shot: the strokes with which Murray has defanged so many players with over the years. Then as the match neared its end, the sun poked through the clouds and Murray once again roared in celebration in London’s W14, soaking up the crowd’s adulation and appearing conscious that he probably doesn’t have too many of these victories left.

It felt fitting that he was followed onto the court by Jack Draper, the new British No. 1 who will have to carry the weight of the nation’s expectations once Murray goes. For now, Murray remains the biggest draw for the home crowds here and at Wimbledon, and he next faces Australia’s world No. 43 Jordan Thompson, a player who beat him in the first round here in 2017 when he was a two-time defending champion.

It was a match that sparked alarm in Murray about the state of his hip, and preceded him limping out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage a few weeks later. That’s the thing with playing 1000 matches — there are little stories and sub-plots everywhere you look, even if, for those at Queen’s on Tuesday, there was simple contentment at the fact that match 1001 is coming later this week.
