I LOVED this tour. This was my first time as a solo traveller. The tour guide and the driver were both excellent. The experiences were incredible. Trying to arrange the amount of cities, and experiences solo, with hotels, travel etc is not possible for anywhere near the amount paid. Value for money is excellent. Hotels overall were good. There were some that were a little out of the cities, however the tour guide and driver did their best to accommodate by driving everyone back into the city if they wanted to go. Most of the experiences were really good. The Montmorency Falls as an extra trip with meal was a little pricey. There was not enough time at the Falls and the best view would be down the bottom. This could have been a free trip, without the meal, I would suggest this is looked at. Also in Montreal the tour guide who took us round, was not very engaging and it was difficult to hear her. Everything else was spot on. Well organised, excellent value for money, lovely people, beautiful country, wide range of experiences. LOVED IT. Will definitely be doing another tour.

"This was an "8-day" tour starting in Toronto and ending in Montreal. As a New Zealand author of novels and short stories, I have travelled widely (about 23 countries). This is my fifth coach tour, the others being through Europe with Trafalgar and Expat Explore. In comparison, the hotels used by Cosmos were superior and all but one were located near shops, supermarkets and attractions. On the second day, the tour kicked off with a hiss and a roar as we travelled to Niagara Falls and for me, the highlight was being on a large boat at the bottom of the falls. Old Quebec City was another highlight together with its interesting history involving the French and English. Our tour leader, Nadine, did an excellent job giving the history and attending to our needs. The coach driver, Dave, was also very friendly and helpful. My wife and I took advantage of two optional excursions: A traditional sugar-shack Dinner, and Quebec countryside dinner and Montmorency Falls. I would recommend the latter. At the end of the seventh day, the tour ended. Brian Wilson

A hub of rich history, irresistible culture, and stunning architecture, Quebec City is one of the oldest settlements on the continent, and to this day, remains the only walled city north of the Mexican border.

However, the real gems can be found mere miles from the city limits.

1. Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park

Widely known as the prime whale watching destination in the entire province, the Saguenay St Lawrence Marine Park lies at the mouth of the Saguenay and St Lawrence Rivers.

The mix of fresh and salt water creates an irresistible environment for an astonishingly diverse array of whales, including blue, humpback and beluga.

Departing from the village of Tadoussac, you’ll have the chance to see the enormous animals up close in their natural habitat.

This day trip is a must for all nature lovers and is well worth the two hours from Quebec City that it takes to reach the rivers.

2. Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier

Intersected by an awe-inspiring valley more than 500 meters deep, the Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier is a gorgeous pine-covered wilderness that is, astonishingly, only 30 minutes from the busy center of Quebec City.

Mist often clings to the hillsides, giving it an eerie beauty, and the river and surrounding valley offer a host of activities for outdoor enthusiasts.

With over 60 miles of hiking trails to choose from, you can spend the entire day exploring the national park or pack some food for a riverside picnic in the summer.

During the winter, skiers descend on the valley for some world-class cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

3. Île d’Orléans

Without a doubt one of the most popular day trip destinations from Quebec City, Île d’Orléans draws visitors throughout the year, both local and foreign alike.

The large island is connected to the mainland by bridge and is reachable by car in less than 20 minutes; it offers a wonderfully diverse range of attractions.

History buffs will want to take a guided tour to learn about the island’s heritage, whilst foodies will be in for a real treat.

Because its heritage and climate, the island has been nicknamed “the pantry of Quebec City” and has become a gourmet destination where you can sample chocolate, fresh fruit, local maple syrup, wines, beers and much more.

4. Le Train du Massif

One of the best ways to soak up the breath-taking scenery of the Charlevoix region without spending hours hiking is to take a train journey, of which few are as wonderful as Le Train du Massif.

Running from Montmorency Falls to La Malbaie, the route takes you past soaring hills, forested valleys and places of historical significance.

The winning feature, however, is the experience on board the train itself.

5. Grosse Île

Another island not far from the city offers visitors a fascinating insight into the history of immigration into Canada.

Grosse Île was once the entry point for many Irish immigrants who came to Canada over the course of a century in the early 1800’s.

Aside from this, it’s also a gorgeous place to hike, with many people favoring the stunning Mirador Trail that takes you on a winding route among 600-year-old trees between river and mountain.

6. Baie-Saint-Paul

The main town of the Charlevoix region, Baie-Saint-Paul is a hotbed of creative and gastronomic prowess.

It’s home to a renowned artist community and as a result, houses a plethora of galleries with something to grab the attention of even the most casual passer-by.

These can be found on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street, though there are others tucked away beyond the main avenue.

These galleries – combined with the gorgeous views of the neighboring river and surrounding mountains – make it a wonderful village to visit for the day.

The food here is also world class.

Grab some lunch at Le Saint-Pub microbrewery before heading back to the city.

7. Aventures Nord-Bec Stoneham

Located just next to the Parc National de la Jacques Cartier, this day trip is a hands-on adventure experience for those who want to get in touch with the wild.

Among the gorgeous alpine landscape, you can try your hand at dogsledding, snowshoeing and even receive an introductory course in forest survival techniques! If you want to completely escape the city, then this is the day trip for you.

8. Montmorency Falls

Nestled within the beautiful Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, the Montmorency Falls are truly a sight to behold.

Over one hundred feet taller than Niagara, the falls attracts visitors all year round, though its preferable to go in summer when you can also make the most of the excellent hiking in the park.

The falls themselves are breath-taking.

You can make the journey to the top in a cable car and if you’re not scared of heights, you can venture out onto the vertigo-inducing suspended bridge joining the two river banks and peer out over the top of the falls.

9. Montréal

One of the most popular cities in the country, Montréal is home to a thousand reasons why you should visit.

As it is reachable in less than three hours heading southwest from Quebec City, it’s well worth the journey.

Foodies will be spoilt for choice; Montréal has more restaurants per capita than any other city on the continent! Lovers of the arts will also be satisfied with the incredible range of festivals throughout the year, from film and dance to music.

The young demographic, combined with gorgeous French colonial architecture and a zest for life, makes Montréal a must-see destination if you have a day to spare.

10. Mont-Sainte-Anne

A destination for lovers of everything outdoors, Mont-Sainte-Anne is home to vast expanses of alpine wonderland, where you can find just about anything to keep you active and in the fresh air for a day.

Only 40 kilometers away from Quebec City, you’ll find luxury campgrounds, lakes, hiking trails, and even a world-class alpine ski resort.

Whether you arrive in summer or winter, it’s an excellent place to escape from the city for a day or two.

The town of Levis lies a short way across the St Lawrence River and is a beautiful place from which to get a completely different perspective of Quebec City.

You can board a ferry to get there, which leaves every hour from terminals on both sides.

The sleepy city is home to old parishes, the gorgeous Chaudiere Falls, and national historic sites like the Levis Fort.

Spend your day wandering around the points of interest and make sure you get to a few good vantage points to enjoy the spectacular views.

12. Valcartier Vacation Village

Perfect for a family vacation or a getaway with some friends, the Valcartier Vacation Village is an amusement park of epic proportions that transforms depending on the season.

The sheer rock walls make for some truly excellent rock climbing routes and the raging river below makes the experience even more nail-biting.

For something a little less extreme, you can wander around the two-foot-wide suspension bridges that connect both sides of the valley, which will be more than enough excitement for some.

Although parents often have a whole list of must-see attractions when traveling, kids often need a break to stop and play. On our list of things for to do in Quebec City with kids t hese are the best places to let kids be kids.

First and foremost, Benjo Toy Store is world famous and one of the most loved things for families to do in Quebec City. Kids can enter the store through a kid-sized door, play with the toys before purchasing them, take a free train ride, make crafts, and of course, purchase unique toys.

At the Quebec Aquarium , families can visit aquatic exhibits from around the world including the Boreal area, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Amazon rainforest, and the St. Lawrence Estuary. One of the highlights is the aquarium’s beluga whale observation area where families can see these white whales up close.

The pirate ship-themed UNESCO Park & Playground ( Parc de l’Unesco ) and the free Chocolate Museum ( Choco-Musée ) are two more kid-friendly options.

Feel the Mist at Montmorency Falls

Located only 15 minutes from Old Québec, Montmorency Falls ( Chutes Montmorency) is an impressive waterfall that can’t be missed, especially during late summer when the runoff produces a very impressive flow of water. Plummeting 272 feet down into the Saint Lawrence River, the falls are actually almost 100 feet taller than Niagara (though significantly less wide).

There are a few activities and adventures in Montmorency Falls Park ( Parc de la Chute Montmorency ) including a cable car, suspension bridge over the crest of the falls, a double zipline (kids that weigh 90 pounds or more can ride), a Via Ferrata climbing trail, multiple viewpoints, picnic grounds, restaurants, and hiking trails.

After getting misted at the viewing area near the bottom of the falls, we decided to climb the nearly 500 steps to the top of the falls instead of riding the cable car. We were tired, but it sure was a fun achievement!

Trekaroo Tip: Parking at the falls can be crowded and it is strongly recommended you purchase your daily access and parking online in advance of your visit.

See the Only French Language British Changing of the Guard

Outside of Buckingham Palace, there are only a few places to see the royal changing of the guard. Luckily, for visitors visiting Québec city with kids, Québec City is one of them.

Visit the Citadel  ( La Citadelle/Musée du Royal  22e Régiment )  any day of the week to observe this special ceremony. It is the only Canadian or British changing of the guard spoken in French – how’s that for a fun combination of cultures?

Trekaroo Tip: Although the ceremony is in French, there is an occasional translation into English over a loudspeaker. The ceremony is also quite long. Don’t feel bad about arriving late or leaving a tad early.

Become a Festival-goer at one of Quebec’s Famous Festivals

Québec City is known for its festivals and celebrating the joie de vivre. Every season of the year brings a celebration to Quebec.

Summer brings Summer Festival ( Festival d’été) with face painting, games for children, and lots of fresh produce. There is also a solid music lineup with big bands like Foo Fighters and Imagine Dragons.

The New France Festival ( Les Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France) is the biggest history festival in North America, and takes place every August. Visitors are immersed in living history reminiscent of 17th and 18th century life in Québec .

Winter plays host to the ever-popular Winter Carnival ( Carnaval de Québec) with canoe ice races on the St. Lawrence River, lots of children’s activities, an ice palace, and even an ice hotel.

Stroll Through Old Québec

Although Québec City offers a variety of attractions and activities to experience, my favorite activity is to simply stroll through the streets of Old Québec. Passing through the city’s gates is like stepping back in time.

During the spring through autumn months, you’ll find street performers at various outdoor venues, a tradition that has long roots in the city and it is heralded as art. Whether it is juggling, magic, comedy, music, or theater, a live street performance is around the corner.

As you stroll through the streets of Old Québec, you’ll be enticed by dozens of restaurants and a wealth of shopping opportunities, from tourist shops selling everything Québec to quaint and charming kitschy shops.

My family especially enjoyed one small shop selling unique odds and ends. It featured candy for the kiddos and everything related to the French children’s classic, “The Little Prince”.

Be sure to stop by the Old Port Marketplace (Le Marche de Vieux Port) during the summer months to grab a few pieces of locally-grown produce to snack on as you stroll.

Where to Eat in Quebec City with Kids

Families won’t go hungry while visiting Québec City. Within the walls of Old Québec, Trekaroo families heartily recommend families stop at Chic Shack , with lines out the door begging for burgers and poutine but a walk-up counter with to-go food (and shakes!) that will get you in and out faster.;

You will also find Le Veravin , serving up vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options for those traveling with food allergy issues. For dessert, head to Chocolato, an ice-cream and chocolate lovers dream destination that is the perfect stop after a day of exploration.

Where to Stay in Quebec City with Kids

Fairmont Chateau Frontenac – For many, the ultimate dream accommodation in Québec City is a stay at Fairmont’s Chateau Frontenac. An iconic castle-shaped hotel that welcomes families visiting Québec City with kids.

Families will love the gorgeous pool, the incredible kid’s menus featuring local dishes and the friendly canine ambassador who works in the lobby that is always ready for a cuddle or a walk.

Hilton Québec – Located just outside Old Québec’s city walls, a 5-minute walk from shops, restaurants, and museums, the Hilton Québec offers amazing views of the city landscape.

We found ourselves situated near the top floor of this hotel in a large, multi-room suite. Our view overlooked the city’s lights, buildings, rivers, and amazing scenery and it remains one of my favorite hotel stays of all time for the views alone.

There’s a lot more to love here, including the sprawling breakfast buffet (look for packages that include breakfast!), the top-floor bar and lounge that opens for families for brunch, and the outdoor pool for cooling off on hot days.

Day Trips From Quebec City with Kids

Thanks to the St. Lawrence’s direct line to the Atlantic Ocean, Maritime Quebec and the St. Lawrence River are home to unique marine life, including beluga whales. Just a few hours outside of Québec City, families can kayak to see these beauties during the summer months while they visit the river’s waters or climb aboard a whale-watching boat.

Explore the Mountains

The mountains that surround Quebec City are ripe with exploration opportunities. The Charlevoix Region , located just a couple hours outside of the city, is home to a variety of year-round adventures including kayaking, a flavor trail of local artisan cheeses and plenty of shopping.

When winter hits the region, there are lots of ski and snow activities. Families visiting Québec in the winter can hit the slopes at four local ski resorts, the closest being just 15 minutes from Old Québec.

Bus carrying Quebec tourists crashes in Cuba, 26 injured

One person is dead and 26 were injured after a bus with Quebec tourists in Cuba was involved in a collision on Sunday, near the Santa Clara Airport.

The driver of the car, a Cuban citizen, is said to have been the person who died – according to Cuban media outlets.

The bus was on its way to the airport for a flight back to Montreal when it crashed in Camajuani, about 25 kilometres east of the airport.

“We can confirm that an accident occurred on June 2, 2024, involving a bus from one of our transfer partners, transporting 38 passengers from flight TS715 to Montréal, near Santa Clara Airport, Cuba (SNU). An oncoming car lost control and collided with the bus, causing it to overturn,” said Air Transat in a statement to CityNews on Monday afternoon.

“All passengers were immediately taken care of and transported to a nearby hospital. We are certainly concerned about everyone’s health and well-being and are doing everything we can to offer the necessary support during this difficult time,” continued Air Transat.

“Our team reacted quickly to ensure immediate medical care. We have worked closely with local authorities and arranged accommodation in a nearby hotel for passengers under observation or suffering minor injuries. Repatriation efforts are underway. We are closely monitoring the situation and providing ongoing support on-site to all affected individuals. Our thoughts are with these travellers.”
