Christmas displays and lights are popular in the 'burbs, great for kids, adults and visitors to enjoy.

The creativity of the general public never ceases to amaze me. I just LOVE driving round the suburbs at night at this time of the year checking out the different lighting displays on the houses.

Lights on the Christmas tree are as far as we go. I couldn't even contemplate keeping up with the neighbours! But we do enjoy checking them out at this time of the year.

Definition: Gold Coast Christmas Lights Competition

A formal and informal competition to out do your neighbour with your decorating skills!

On this page you will find some top spots for great lighting displays around the suburbs of the Gold Coast.

When we first moved the Gold Coast we lived in Arundel and there was a definite feeling that in some streets the competition between neighbours was pretty full on!

You would drive down one night and see a few lights, and a few days later there would be more, bigger and more imaginative displays.

By the time Christmas came around it was lit up like Piccadilly Circus (sorry pommie reference there, but you know what I mean) - with sleighs, reindeer, roof scenes, palm trees, moving parts, flashing lights and sometimes even sound effects!

In the Gold Coast the City Council runs a Christmas Lights competition each year, which inspires neighbour against neighbour, suburb against suburb for the prestigious crown of the Best Christmas Lights in the Gold Coast!

After a few changes in format this one seems to be here to stay... The Mayor's Panel Top 12 list is compiled from entrants and the community then votes for the best one. Online voting closes around mid December with the winner announced a few days later at Robina Town Centre.

The rest of those on the list will most likely have their lights from 1 December through to Christmas Eve on 24 December. So that is the best time to go see the Christmas lights around Gold Coast.

Best viewing times are at night of course, so it can get a bit busy and there are traffic jams! At this time of the year it is usually dark enough by about 7pm.

Christmas Light bus tours usually run for about a week leading up to Christmas Eve on 24 December. Since 2017, they have been split into north and south. With one departing from the Gold Coast Arts Centre covering the southern notable lights displays and the other from Upper Coomera for the northern suburbs.  They depart around 7pm  and can be a great option, especially if you are visiting and don't know the areas and don't mind being on a bus for a couple of hours.

These bus tours are run by Murrays Bus Tours and the GCCC.

For those that would like to check out the options ahead of time, I have compiled some of the hotspots for good displays around the Gold Coast.

Drive Yourself To See the Lights in Gold Coast

If you want to drive yourself, here are some good spots for checking out the Christmas Lights. Please note that people move or no longer participate in the lights competition from year to year, but the following information will at least give you an idea of where to look .

Here are some good spots to check out the lights in several suburbs across Gold Coast, I am sure there are more, including some of the winners and entries for the Gold Coast Xmas lights competition. Remember that from year to year, people may move, so this is no guarantee that you will find the biggest and best in this list, but I know competition excites the neighbours, so it is likely that there will be lights to see!

I've tried to group them for you so you can find them relatively easily. Those in Red are 2017 Mayor's Panel Top 12

Where To Find The Gold Coast’s Best Christmas Lights In 2023

By Isabel Croker – who loves morning run clubs as equally as she loves negronis and tiny snack plates

12th Dec 2023

christmas light bus tour gold coast

It's that time of year again. Bust out the Mariah, slap on a (seasonally inappropriate) Christmas sweater, load up on eggnog and mince pies and pause your cheesy Christmas movie binge-fest courtesy of Netflix, because it's time to head out for some Christmas lights.

Luckily for us, the Gold Coast is blessed with some of the best Christmas lights displays around and there’s absolutely no room for Grinches here. Read on for some of the best Christmas lights on the Gold Coast/Yugambeh language region, so you can spread the Christmas cheer in 2023.

Editor's note: We're still confirming some 2023 Christmas lights listings. Let us know by emailing [email protected] if we have missed any of your favourite Christmas light legends.

North Gold Coast

2/7 moss terrace.

The winner of the KIIS FM Christmas Lights competition, if you visit just one Gold Coast Christmas lights display, make it this one. A very impressive Christmas light show is going on at Moss Terrace that's giving us all the Christmas feels. The strobing multi-coloured house display that meanders into their spacious garden will make you ho-ho-hope they’ll return again in the years to come. Spot Santa perched precariously on their roof.

13 Katandra Crescent

Timed to musical perfection, this epic Christmas lights display in Ormeau is absolutely worth the drive. The ever-changing display keeps the festive vibes going with snowflakes, candy canes and stars adorning every corner of the house.

Forest Oak Drive

Upper coomera.

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic Gold Coast streets for Christmas light perusing, Forest Oak Drive never fails to deliver, year after year. Almost the entire street lights up in festive colours, extravagant displays and interactive exhibitions. Be sure to allow time for walking, as you may need to park a few streets away.

4 Santa Clara Rise

This house on Santa Clara Rise (aka Santa Claus Lane) will make all your Christmas light display dreams come true. An inflatable Santa arch, teeny Santas, big Santas...the more you look, the more you’ll find. Grab a Maccas soft serve and visit this showstopper that draws crowds every year.

12 Drumbeat Place

Everyone knows Coomera is the place to fuel all your Christmas lights dreams and this house in Drumbeat Place is a point in case. Almost every surface of this two-storey house is covered in lights, including a massive Christmas tree, a huge blow-up castle for Santa, trees adorned with lights and so much cheery goodness.

97 Annabelle Crescent

This huge Christmas lights display will get you in the festive spirit with moving features, an indoor nativity scene, Christmas statues, a Santa parked up on the roof and a walk-through Christmas trail. These Christmas lights take over a month to set up and the owners have been displaying lights for over 15 years.

26 Jagera Drive

Snap a picture in the giant Santa-style chair underneath the beaming star, surrounded by penguins, elves, colourful forest trees...and thank us later. Yes, they go all out here and in true Coomera style, the streets fill early with festive lovers.

Salvado Drive

Pacific pines.

Several houses on Salvado Drive in Pacific Pines have upped their Christmas light game this year and we’re here for it. Expect giant Santas, reindeers and some magnificently flashing lights. Pass the popcorn and enjoy the show ‘cause this one decked-out street you need to visit.

21 Springwood Avenue

One of the Gold Coast's top Christmas lights displays lies at 21 Springwood Avenue in Pacific Pines. This house has reigned supreme as the winner of the Gold Coast Bulletin's Christmas Lights Competition for multiple years and once you see the house, you'll realise why. The dazzling lights will be turned on in all their glory from 1 December and there will be an icecream truck onsite from approximately 12 December (awaiting confirmation) until Christmas Day.

6 Waigeo Street

The Christmas lights display on Waigeo Street is so cute we could die. Colourful lights, adorable Santas and charming little signs...plus you really can’t beat Santa in a Kombi and Santa in a caravan. Max adorable levels in true Aussie style.

3 & 4 Beaumont Crescent

Check out a dazzling display of Santa’s kangaroo sleigh (it’s impressive, trust us) at Beaumont Crescent this year. Make sure you take an ‘elfie’ in Santa’s sleigh and have a look at their Disneyland inspired Christmas room. Crack that eggnog if you’re feeling naughty, a jolly treat stocking if you’ve been nice, and wander down by moonlight.

Wunburra Circuit

If you're looking to hit as many Christmas lights displays as you can in one street, Wunburra Circuit does a pretty good job it. The street is usually filled with Christmas lights displays, ranging from small decorations to full-blown, multi-storey affairs.

6 Boyer Street

Ever seen Santa in a pool with a reindeer and a polar bear? Well here’s your chance ‘cause this has happened at 6 Boyer Street in previous years. Pack your gingerbread man, don your fluffy red hat and get amongst the merry times. The lights are normally up and twinkling by 5:30pm and turn off at 10pm, so be sure to visit between these times for all the festive vibes.

26 Stevens Street

This house is the definition of light up from top to bottom. This Christmas lights display in Southport is so cute we can’t even deal. You;ve got Santa climbing a Christmas tree, Santa on a motorbike, Santa in a Kombi...is there anything Santa can’t do?

16 Taupo Court

If you’re on the hunt for a sparkling extravaganza, look no further than Taupo Court in Coombabah. A lineup of Christmas trees, twinkling stars and strobing snowflakes...you definitely can’t miss this house, it’s literally lighting up the whole street. Tune into FM 107.0 to get the most out of these synced-up lights.

Southern Gold Coast

2 underhill place.

When you’ve got a large backyard, there’s one thing you need to do with it—turn into into an epic Christmas-themed lights display. That’s exactly what has happened at 2 Underhill Place in Tallai and we love it. From their massive stars to the giant Christmas tree on the balcony to the cheery nutcrackers guarding the gate, this house screams Christmas.

44 Winchester Drive

With twinkling lights adorning every surface, a Grinch sneaking over the fence and Santa in a treehouse, Winchester Drive has truly decked the halls (and the fence and front garden, too) for a blindingly beautiful Christmas light display tucked away in Nerang. A must-visit for the best Christmas lights on the Gold Coast.

17 Long Island Court

Mermaid waters.

The Southern Gold Coast is giving the northern Gold Coast a run for its money when it comes to the best Christmas lights displays on the Gold Coast and Long Island Court is testament to that. The sprawling hosue is covering from roof to fence in rainbow-coloured lights and has a large Christmas tree in the front yard.

31 Lancelin Drive

While you're in Mermaid Waters be sure to check out Lancelin Drive, which is one of the best Christmas photo opportunities you'll get. The house is fully decked out and we love the constantly changing display.

Some more favourites of ours include: North Gold Coast

Is this still happening this year? And can you still enter

It appears that only yesterday it was announced that the annual Christmas lights competition will not go ahead this year.

Reading 2 different articles on the same day, it’s even difficult to figure out if the event will go ahead in the future. In one articles, it quoted that “Mayor Tom Tate confirmed the event had been cancelled for good”, while in another it states “That’s not to say that the bus tours couldn’t return sometime in the future, with the Mayor vowing to review the decision in a year’s time.”

The Mayor still suggests people put up their lights – there just won’t be an official event or bus service this year at least.

Thanks Michael

So how do we enter the competition

Hi Kirsty and Brad,

It was announced earlier this week that the annual Christmas lights competition will not go ahead this year.

Travel The Gold Coast By Public Transport

11 Oct 2019

So you’ve booked a trip to the Gold Coast and need information on how to get around. With a variety of bus, rail and shuttle services on offer, we’ve got all you need to know to jump on board and see the best of the Gold Coast. Read on for tips on how to travel the Gold Coast by public transport.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are a few ticket options for passengers travelling around the Gold Coast. The go card is used for Translink buses, trains and the G:link tram. You can buy a go card at any 7-Eleven store, Visitor Information Centres , many Queensland Rail and tram stations, some busway stations and selected newsagents. You can top-up your card at any of those locations, as well as online on the Translink website or by phone. On G:link Trams, Smart Ticketing is available, which means you can pay for travel using contactless debit and credit cards. Simply tap on and off with your VISA, Mastercard, American Express or smart device.

Your fares are automatically calculated in order to provide you with the best fare, including transfer, discounts and any other savings. You can buy a single paper ticket which is valid for one-way journeys only. These tickets can be used within a 2-hour time frame and can be purchased on board buses and fare machines. The SEEQ card is specifically for tourists travelling around South East Queensland on the TransLink network.

If you have just arrived at the Gold Coast Airport , you can take the route 761 or 777 bus and within 45 minutes you will arrive at Ferny Avenue in Surfers Paradise . If you are looking for something a bit easier, the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle provides door-to-door services. Alternatively, taxis are always available directly outside the terminal.

One of the best options for travellers though is a Gold Coast go explore card. It allows visitors unlimited daily travel everywhere on the tram, trains and bus services from just $10 per day or $5 for kids.

TRAVEL BY TRAM

Tram frequency to all stations is categorised by weekdays and weekends. During peak periods (7am to 7pm) trams run every 7.5 minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends. Outside of peak times, the trams run every 15 minutes, with the exception of between midnight and 5am where they run every half an hour on weekends.

Cypress Avenue

With trams passing through the Gold Coast so frequently, it’s never been so easy to see the sights and enjoy some great activities. Some highlights along the tracks of Cypress Avenue include…

The Wax Museum

Have you ever wanted to meet the royal family? Or the Kardashians? People we know from history, movie stars, scientists, explorers, royalty, villains and even world leaders have all been transformed into startling realism and dressed in authentically reproduced outfits. It’s certainly a must-see.

Located on Ferny Ave in Surfers Paradise, the Wax Museum is open 7 days from 10am to 6pm.

Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre

As one of the few precincts that offer shopping, bars and restaurants, the Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre is a tourist favourite to chill out and explore many new eateries and fashion boutiques. Plus, they offer 2 hours of free parking and free WIFI through the centre.

Within the Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre, there is a special place where you can be transported into a 30-minute journey. Special effects, illusions and hallucinogenic music will have you wanting to come back for more. This futuristic maze-like fun-house is great fun for all ages.

Located on the corner of Surfers Paradise Blvd and Elkhorn Ave, Infinity  is open 10am-10pm daily.

Betty’s Burgers

Crisp fried Portobello mushrooms filled with melted gouda and gruyére cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Betty’s special sauce… say no more! Such a classic place, serving the freshest and most mouth-watering burgers. This eatery is another must when visiting Surfers Paradise.

Located on Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Betty’s Burgers is open from 10.30am-9.30pm each day.

Cavill Avenue

As the hotspot of Surfers Paradise, there is nothing that you can’t find on Cavill Avenue. From the hottest clubs, restaurants, bars and attractions including the iconic Surfers Paradise sign, this is one stop on the tram that you don’t want to miss.

Located on the corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Blvd, the Hard Rock Caf é restaurant is open 12pm-late and its shop is open 10am-10pm.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

Robert Ripley scoured the world in search of unusual and bizarre things… and decided to put it into a museum. Sounds like fun? Some examples of what you may experience or see: rare shrunken heads, dinosaur eggs, a man that is 8”11… Intended for those who enjoy fantastically weird things.

Located on Cavill Ave, Ripley’s Believe it or Not is open 9am-10pm daily.

Surfers Paradise
