When we talk about cruising from Los Angeles, fyi: we’re talking about cruises from Long Beach. A short drive from LA is where you’ll find this seaside Southern California city that’s inseparable from its big-city neighbor, while undeniably moving to its own local beat. Dotted with dozens of parks, beaches and multiple public golf courses (fore times five!), Long Beach also boasts perhaps the world’s most unique hotel — located aboard the old-time ocean liner The Queen Mary (which is haunted, or so go the rumors). You can experience it before one of Carnival’s cruises from Long Beach, but definitely don’t miss the glitzy, big-city Los Angeles — the right place to experience the left-coast life. Take in the storied sights of this City of Angels, from its modern museums and high-end shopping to its funky seaside towns and star-studded SoCal sights dotting the hills and boulevards. Hollywood — hooray! So if you’re dreaming about a cruise from Los Angeles, remember: Carnival’s cruises from Long Beach are just the ticket.

  • Climb aboard the Queen Mary , a glamorous 1930s ocean liner.
  • Find your favorite star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • Stroll through the art and antiquities of the Getty Center ® .
  • Take the backlot tour of Universal Studios ™ for a look at Hollywood mythmaking.
  • Gaze into the starry night sky through the Griffith Observatory's ® giant telescope.

The Islands of Naples become a fairy tale setting for the month of December. Gondola Getaway invites you to celebrate the holidays with Sleighs on the Bay and experience the beauty of Christmas as you cruise the bay of lights. Gondola Getaway was founded in 1982 with the concept of bringing back the Old World charm of the “Gondola” to the canals of Naples Islands. Gondolas were first introduced into the area in 1903 when the islands were developed into a Venetian style neighborhood, replete with grand canals and romantic bridges. Over the past 35+ years, Gondola Getaway has strived to bring authenticity and a high level of service to its guests. To help facilitate the authenticity, they take a team to Venezia each year to row and race with the Venetians – the only American team to do so for the past 33 years!

Great family adventure!

This was such a good time. A perfect night for a gondola ride under the full moon. It was a bit chilly but they had blankets available for us to use. Our gondolier was so fun. He kept us entertained as well as gave us some fun facts about the island. The experience is great for date night, proposals, friend dates and family adventure. Its a must do when in the Long Beach area.

Awesome Dinner Experience!

We had a great time on our gondola dinner cruise, led by Jake and Josh. We were able to see amazing sights and architecture, and loved how informative and fun our guides were! The food was great too- the chicken Alfredo pizza was a hit!

5 Stars! Perfect for any age, especially us older folks!

5 STARS! Took a Gondola ride for our 42nd wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful experience. Our Gondolier, Waylon was so kind and knowledgeable. He took us around the canal's and explained a bit of history here and there and pointed out interesting things like the house with the fake shark head sticking out. He played a little romantic music and make the date really special for me and my husband. Thank you, Gondola Getaway and Waylon. And it was free parking! Ice cream shop a short drive away. Yum!

Perfect Afternoon!

Fantastic Gondola Experience, great Host (Josh)?, great staff, easy access and also free parking. Overall great experience. The trip was perfect, the add-on's well worth it such as message in a bottle and snack trays. The route is great and just the right amount of time. Looking forward to the night cruise. We took a noon cruise. Very clean and professional, comfortable and friendly. Perfect.

Our Gondeliir Jared was a joy!

We had a great evening celebrating my mom’s special birthday. There was room enough for six adults. Jared was knowledgeable about the different houses and the history of Naples. Lots of great conversation and he also seeing us a beautiful song under one of the bridges. It was a cool way to spend a hot night in Long Beach!

What our guests say:

Still trying to recoup from.

Still trying to recoup from the busy weekend! The party went better than expected. The cruise was really great! I wanted to reach out to you regarding Consuela. She did a “phenomenal” job over and above the course of duty! Every time we went to do something, there she was to assist us. If it’s around raise time, I would recommend giving her a nice bump! Thanks again for all your help in working with me on getting the cruise booked. If not for your efforts, not sure if I would have booked the cruise! As such, if you’re around raise time, I show this to the boss and tell him it’s time to pay up, you’re making them money! Thanks for everything,

Why You Should Take a Gondola Ride in Long Beach to See the Christmas Lights

Posted on Published: November 15, 2023  - Last updated: December 10, 2023

Today I want to share my guide to why you should take a gondola ride in Long Beach to see the Christmas lights along the Naples Canals in Los Angeles County. The holiday decorations on the houses on Naples Island are worth a special trip, and viewing them from a Venetian gondola at sunset is nothing short of magical. Read on for the highlights of this special Southern California experience.

Gondola ride in Long Beach for the Christmas lights

Gondola Ride in Long Beach to See the Christmas Lights

If you’re in Los Angeles County before or after December 25th, one of the most fun and festive things you can do is check out the Christmas lights in Long Beach.

The canals of Naples Island are nothing short of magical at this time of year, and seeing the twinkling houses brighten up the night sky is a great way to celebrate the season.

While you can take a gondola trip here any time of year, the Holiday Lights Cruise is one of the most popular. You can go on an evening gondola ride in Long Beach to see the Christmas lights all throughout December (apart from the 25th). The festive lights and decorations here help make LA one of the best Christmas getaways in California .

Long Beach gondola

Gondola cruises in Long Beach depart from a dock on E Ocean Boulevard, go on a mile-long loop through the Naples Canals, and arrive back at the dock at the end.

There are options for 50-minute private rides for up to 6 people in smaller gondolas, and up to 14 people in larger ones.

Professional gondoliers paddle parties through the canals, and many of them serenade passengers with songs as they go. You can request a singing gondolier when you book if you want to make sure you get one. They’ll also take a photo of you along the way.

Long Beach gondola at sunset

Long Beach Christmas Gondola Ride

I went on a gondola ride in Long Beach to see the Christmas lights with a group of 7 people. We arrived just before sunset, found easy parking on the street, and walked to the gondola office behind the Leeway Sailing & Aquatics Center.

After checking in, we headed down to the dock and boarded our pre-booked extra-long boat. The gondola was decorated with flowers and festooned with cozy blankets, and it looked every bit the authentic Venetian vessel.

We brought our own drinks and snacks (ice, cups, and buckets were provided), and got them out as we boarded the gondola and snuggled up under the blankets.

Gondola in Long Beach

We departed the dock just as the golden hour light was getting good. Our gondolier paddled us across Alamitos Bay and into the canals of Naples Island. As we approached, we were greeted by everything from festive lights to a life-size figure of a pirate captain.

Our gondolier ferried us through the Rivo Alto canal that cuts through the Naples Islands in Long Beach, serenading us with songs that echoed off the houses and filled the air with rich tones.

As we passed under the Accademia, Ravenna, Toledo, Neapolitan East, and Treasure Island bridges, we passed by boats and other gondolas. It was magical to take in the twinkling lights on the houses as the sun sank down in the sky. I loved how the lights ranged from glowing borders to full-blown festive extravaganzas.

Naples Island Christmas lights

After navigating the Naples Canals, the gondolier paddled us back across Alamitos Bay . The sunset was in full color by then, and we enjoyed a spectacular orange-and-purple sky as we glided along the water and back to the dock.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a lit-up display featuring a giant Italian flag on the roof of the gondola office. It was a fun welcome, and a festive way to end our ride.

We capped off the evening with dinner at a nearby restaurant called Yard House in Shoreline Village. This waterfront place overlooks Rainbow Harbor, and it was a fun spot to tuck into classic American dishes and drinks after our Christmas lights cruise.

Gondola Ride in Long Beach for the Christmas Lights

I hope my guide to going on a gondola ride in Long Beach to see the Christmas lights has inspired you to get out on the water yourself this holiday season. You can watch my YouTube video about it if you want to see more.

If you’d like to follow in my footsteps (er, gondola wake), you can book your tour through a company called The Gondola Getaway. Make sure to reserve well in advance to get your preferred date and time slot, as this is a popular winter activity. Bookings for the Holiday Lights Cruise open July 1st. Happy Holidays!
