Chiodos are an American post-hardcore band from Davison, Michigan, formed in 2001. They are widely recognized as one of their genre’s most successful exports.
Originally known as The Chiodos Bros. - a tribute to the filmmakers responsible for the cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Chiodos have since become one of the most influential post-hardcore bands on the circuit. After a formative few years in which they toured, released EPs and wrote material for a debut full-length, they finally dropped the aptly-titled ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ in 2005, which they followed up with a well-received slot on that year’s Warped Tour, and support slots to the likes of Atreyu and Cohhed and Cambria.
Upheaval was to lie ahead, though; after the success of album number two, ‘Bone Palace Ballet’, the band fired frontman Craig Owens in 2009, just after a tour with Nine Inch Nails had further helped place them on the map. Their next album, 2010’s ‘Illuminaudio’, was a success within the genre, but a further reshuffle followed once touring duties were completed; both replacement singer Brandon Bolmer and sticksman Tanner Wayne announced their departures in March 2012, with Owens quickly ushered back into the fold - his first recorded contributions since his return can be heard on ‘Devil’, the band’s first record in four years, which was released on April 1st, 2004.
Live reviews
I don't know if it is because I haven't been to a concert in like, a year, but it was awesome watching three very tight bands. All the bands sounded very well and created an awesome atmosphere.
I gotta admit, I didn't catch the name of the very first band, but it was great watching a Mexican band do what they did. Sure they are still not as mature as the other bands, but they still did an awesome job. Then it was I See Stars's turn. I was thoroughly impressed by this band whom I had barely ever heard of. Their frontman Devin Oliver is impressive. His singing is something special and his presence is even better. I could understand why many could be put off by their hip-hop loop breaks, but those were interesting moments during their performance.
Last was, of course, Chiodos, the headliners. The night was perfect for them. Myabe there could have been more people, but the people that there were at Lunario, were left ecstatic by their performance. Craig Nichols is lord and master of the stage and of the three bands, Chiodos, was the best and tightest, which is saying something.
If anything was not as great was that Chiodos played only for 30 minutes and they did not play anything from their excellent Illuminaudio. The concert was worth its admission price and if this kind of music is your "thing", then it is a must next time they are in Mexico.

I saw Chiodos at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH. It is a great 2 story venue that is standing room only. The venue holds around 1500 people and it was packed. They had a standard set-up on stage with the band name Chiodos in on a red back drop.
The guys were dressed in standard attire of jeans and t-shirts. The crowd was really with the band the whole way. Dancing and singing along with every song. This helped the band be even more involved with the show. All of them played their hearts out and seemed to leave a piece of themselves in the venue with the crowd.
Dead Now was probably my favorite part of the show. I love that song and Craig had the audience singing most of the song themselves. Bradley was going to town on the keyboard and head banging out. Pat was all over the stage interacting with every other member of the group.
The also did a really awesome acoustic version of Under Your Halo. It was one of the better rock concerts I have been to and can't wait to see them live again! I think they are a definite must see for all of their fans, you will not be disappointed with their show.

Craig Owens To Release New Album with Reimagined Versions of Chiodos and D.R.U.G.S. Songs [VIDEO]
Chiodos frontman Craig Owens has announced the release of his first solo album, VOLUME 1, due out on August 18th. The album will reimagine tracks from his past bands including Chiodos, D.R.U.G.S. (Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows), badXchannels, and Isles & Glaciers.
He’s offered the first preview of the album with a piano-driven ballad version of the Chiodos classic “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute On The Creek.”
Owens said of the track:
“‘Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute on the Creek’ is a song about a relationship that has reached a point of stagnation or dissatisfaction and a desire to end a relationship that has lost its spark and meaning. The song portrays a sense of disillusionment, a desire for a clean break, and an acknowledgment that walking away is the best course of action despite the pain.”
Listen to the original version of the song below and hear the incredible difference between the two versions.
“Cemetery Weather” “To Trixie And Reptile, Thanks For Everything” “Graveyard Dancing” “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute On The Creek” “DESTINY” “Intensity In Ten Cities” “Mr. Owl Ate My Metal Worm” “GOLD” “It’s Easy” “I Wanna Be Alone” “3 AM”
Craig Owens is currently on tour with a stop planned in Cudahy, Wisconsin on July 7th .

Anastasia Stognei in Tbilisi and Ben Hall in London
Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
There are few places in Tbilisi from where you cannot see the steel and glass palace perched on Mount Mtatsminda belonging to Bidzina Ivanishvili. But unlike his imposing property, the richest and most powerful man in Georgia has stayed out of the public eye.
Since serving as prime minister from 2012-13, the oligarch — whose $5bn fortune is equivalent to one-third of his country’s GDP — has largely wielded power from behind the scenes.
Last week, however, he descended from his mountain to deliver a conspiratorial, anti-western speech in which he depicted Georgia as a victim of a “global party of war” and its alleged agents among civil rights groups.
His rare address, at a pro-government rally, was a show of support for a highly contentious foreign agents law being pushed through parliament by his Georgian Dream party. The law would require NGOs and media outlets with foreign funding to register with the justice ministry or face fines.
Critics say it has been inspired by Russia’s crackdown on civil society and will be used to help Georgian Dream win parliament elections due in October.
The bill has sparked the country’s biggest demonstrations in decades, with many Georgians fearing its passage will jeopardise — and indeed may be designed to stymie — their hopes of joining the EU.
The Georgian government’s rapprochement with Moscow has been under way for three years, despite Russia’s war against Ukraine. But analysts and government critics say that the foreign agents law and Ivanishvili’s speech, in which he echoed Kremlin lines, mark a turning point and that the former Soviet republic is now heading back into Russia’s orbit.
Ever since independence, Georgian governments have sought to integrate with the west, said Natalie Sabanadze, a former Georgian ambassador to the EU, now with the Chatham House think-tank. But recent events, she said, had been a “big, dramatic shift”.
Ivanishvili spent his formative years in Russia where he built his fortune like other oligarchs who acquired Soviet-era state assets through privatisations. While studying at a Moscow university in the 1980s, he teamed up with a Russian-Israeli national, Vitaly Malkin, and began trading in computers and telephones from Hong Kong. They expanded into banking and metals.
The Georgian oligarch is part of semibankirshina or “seven bankers” — a group of influential Russian financiers and businessmen that included Boris Berezovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Mikhail Fridman — who salvaged Boris Yeltsin’s campaign for re-election as Russian president in 1996.
In 2003 Ivanishvili returned from Russia to his native Georgian village of Chorvila. He stayed out of politics until 2011 when he founded Georgian Dream, a coalition of all the forces opposing then president Mikheil Saakashvili. Within a year, the party won parliamentary elections, marking the first peaceful transition of power in modern Georgia, and the billionaire became prime minister.
During his time in office, Saakashvili passed successful, albeit painful economic reforms. His attempts to steer Georgia out of Russia’s orbit and into the EU and Nato prompted a Russian invasion and occupation of two border regions in 2008. Saakashvili became increasingly authoritarian, cracking down on dissent to hold on to power.
“People were so tired that they would vote for anyone who opposed Saakashvili”, said Victor Kipiani, a senior partner at Tbilisi-based law firm MKD that represented Ivanishvili for five years until the oligarch halted their co-operation in 2023, after Kipiani criticised the ruling party’s first attempt to adopt the foreign agents law.
Ivanishvili tried to stabilise relations with Moscow, with the blessing of the west, while at the same time prioritising Georgia’s integration into the EU and Nato, says Chatham House’s Sabanadze. But the balancing act became impossible after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
One theory is that, as is the case with many Russian oligarchs, his business interests are under threat unless he toes the Kremlin line. Another possible explanation is that he is reacting to an EU request for Georgia to drastically curb the sway of its oligarchs before starting accession talks.
Ivanishvili did not respond to requests for comment.
As honorary chair of Georgian Dream, a role created specially for him, he holds no formal government or party role. But he crucially has the right to nominate the party’s candidates for prime minister.
“This arrangement gives Ivanishvili almost absolute power without any formal accountability,” said Eka Gigauri, head of Transparency International Georgia.
Ivanishvili maintains his grip on power by appointing close associates to key positions. His bodyguard is now the minister of interior, former chief executives of his companies have been appointed at the helm of the intelligence service and the ministry of infrastructure and the former minister of education was once a maths tutor for his children, said Gigauri. “The list goes on and on.”
Another explanation for his Russia pivot is that, with elections looming, Ivanishvili is adopting tactics used by Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, polarising the political debate, painting domestic opponents as foreign lackeys and fighting culture war issues to appeal to socially conservative Georgians, especially those in rural areas.
“People support EU integration because they believe that life is better there,” said Kornely Kakachia, the director of the Georgian Institute of Politics. “But when it comes to values, many do not believe in them,” he said, giving the example of LGBT+ rights.
In his speech Ivanishvili reiterated that it was still Georgia’s objective to join the EU. But Brussels has warned that passing the NGO law would threaten Georgia’s membership prospects.
As many as 89 per cent of Georgians support EU accession, according to the Washington-based International Republican Institute. Tens of thousands have taken to the streets of Tbilisi since early April and clashed with police, some draped in EU flags, to protest against the law and their country sliding back into Russia’s sphere of influence.
So Ivanishvili is taking a “possibly suicidal” risk, said Sabanadze. Some members of the European parliament have called for sanctions against the oligarch.
Georgian Dream has paid lip service to EU integration to buy domestic and international legitimacy while “incrementally eroding democracy in the country”, said Anastasia Mgaloblishvili of the German Marshall Fund think-tank. Now, she said, “the pro-EU veil has finally come off”.

Is it possible to visit Russia as a tourist in 2023?
Yes, traveling to Russia as a tourist in 2023 is possible. Here’s what to look out for if you’re preparing for your dream trip.
Visa requirements
First things first, it is worth checking if you need a visa to cross the Russian border. In 2023, citizens of some 65 countries can visit Russia without a visa. This includes most of the post-Soviet states like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as Ukraine.
Additionally, citizens of some countries in South and Central America – including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Uruguay, Ecuador – do not need a visa to travel to Russia.
Citizens of Israel, South Africa, Cuba, Montenegro, Thailand, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Andorra, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Mongolia, Botswana enjoy visa-free regime with Russia, too.
For the full list of countries, click here .
* Data for the infographics is from November 2022 and was obtained from the Russian consular information website.
* The status of a particular country is subject to change. We advise additionally researching the relevant information in each particular case before booking any trip to Russia.
* Visa waivers may apply for holders of diplomatic or military service passports, select businessmen, air crew members, members of a ship or train crew, professional truck drivers, organized tourist groups and people who have official permission to live in some border regions.
Is it safe to travel to Russia right now?
Russia as a travel destination received a fair share of negative PR from various sources in early 2022.
Some official travel accounts run by governments of countries like the U.S. , Australia , Great Britain and others advise their citizens to abstain from non-essential travel to the country.
That said, it is always advisable to evaluate safety risks when traveling to any foreign country. Traveling to Russia is no exception. However, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities have been widely regarded as being safe , especially in comparison to other popular tourist destinations.
Little has changed in major Russian cities from the point of view of tourists or local residents. Consequently, the most extreme and vocal concerns over security may be disregarded as being too alarmist.
That said, logistics pose the greatest challenge for tourists traveling to Russia in 2023. A number of countries closed their national airspace for Russian air companies resulting in more complicated logistics for tourists who intend to visit Russia in 2023.
However, specific changes depend on a particular country from where a tourist departs. In some cases, direct flight routes remain intact. For example, nothing has changed for tourists from China, India, Turkey, Middle Eastern countries and the majority of post-Soviet states. They can book direct flights to Russia’s main airports.
Tourists departing from European capitals will have to book connecting flights via Turkey or countries in the Middle East. This makes tickets more expensive and flights longer. However, it is still possible to travel to Russia from virtually any country in the world.
It should be noted that every country has its own nuances that must be taken into account beforehand. For example, the Indian Embassy in Russia advises Indian nationals against traveling to Russia via third countries. According to the embassy website, Indian travelers should choose only direct flights from Delhi to Moscow, otherwise they risk being denied entry into Russia.
In another instance, the British government prohibited its citizens from purchasing tickets on Russian airlines that were under sanctions. Nonetheless, the British authorities made an exception for those journeys originating in or within Russia: in this case, British nationals may purchase tickets from Russian companies without breaching UK sanctions.
Covid restrictions, vaccination status & quarantine
In 2022, Russian authorities canceled Covid-related restrictions for Russian citizens and foreign tourists, alike.
In 2023, foreign nationals no longer need to provide results of a negative PCR test when entering Russia by any mode of transport. Therefore, foreign travelers no longer need to take a coronavirus test in advance before departure.
Furthermore, Russian authorities lifted Covid-related restrictions that required visitors to provide a specific reason for visiting the country facilitating tourist traveling.
The only remaining Covid-related regulation is a requirement to fill in a questionnaire. Passengers – both Russian and foreign citizens – will be asked to fill out the paper version of the questionnaire on board during their flight to Russia.
