JUMP AHEAD TO...

UK Road Trips- How to Plan

Planning a UK road trip to England or elsewhere can be tough.

There are SO MANY places, ideas, options and reviews- how on earth are you supposed to choose the best way or most scenic drives?

Then, you have to factor in how long you have for your UK road trip (remembering that much of rural UK has smaller, slower roads, so it takes a lot longer to get there than you might expect.

So, if you’re planning a road trip around England (and the UK) and feeling overwhelmed, here are some of our favourite road trips and itinerary ideas to help you. We’ll discuss the best bits of each area, why and when you should visit, how far it is from London and where you should allow extra time to explore.

England Road Trip Ideas- Where to Start

England road trip idea- Isle of wight road trip

The first thing to decide is where you want to visit on your road trip. Also, remember that England is only one section of the UK- there are several other countries to explore (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom).

So, if you want to do a full UK road trip, you’ll need more time than if you were just doing an England road trip.

Our biggest tip is not to overface yourself. Whether you only have a long weekend for a quick trip from London or a week to get out on the open road and tour, make sure you leave time to actually get out of your vehicle and explore the places you’re visiting- you’ll find plenty of historic sites, sandy beaches and incredible routes to enjoy.

Roughly speaking, you can split England in half- the South of England and the North  (the line roughly goes through Birmingham) or even further into quarters if you only have time for a one-week road trip.

Again, how far you can travel will depend on how much time you have, as well as how you are travelling (rental car, motorhome or public transport), but to do each half ‘properly’ we would recommend at least 2-3 weeks- especially if it’s your first time in England.

Having said that, you can see some of the best sights in less time than that- here’s our one week in England road trip itinerary .

Where to stay during your England road trip

If you’re planning a motorhome or campervan trip , you’ll be able to travel and stop along the way, often without booking in advance, using schemes like Brit Stops or wild camping in your motorhome .

If you’re in a car or motorbike, there are PLENTY of hotels and BnBs to use en route. If you’re travelling in summer we recommend booking at least the first stop in advance- if you use Booking.com for all your accommodation you’ll find you can get a great deal and save a lot of money.

England Road Trip Map

I know how hard it can be to visualise places if you don’t know the country well, so here’s a map of England with several of the road trip destinations shown on it.

Out of interest, if you did this route, it’s about 1056 miles (1700km) long. You could technically do it in a week, but you’d barely have time to get out of the car!

Common England Road Trip Questions

How long does it take to drive the whole of england .

Many people wonder “ How long does it take to drive the whole of England ?” That’s a tough question, as there are so many places to go and depends a lot on your starting point.

Most people allow 2-3 weeks to drive through as much of England as they can, but that will involve a LOT of driving. Of course, you can take a look at the road trip itinerary ideas below and see which scenic route or quaint villages most appeal to you- and then plan your trip around that.

One common UK road trip idea is to drive from Land’s End in Cornwall all the way up to John o’Groats in Scotland, which is about 838miles (1350km). Obviously, this is a road trip which involves England AND Scotland, and that brings me to another important point.

Can we go to England by road?

This is a common question for anyone who doesn’t live in the UK- and the short answer is yes, you can drive to England from mainland Europe.

Whether you’re enjoying a European road trip (here are some ideas for you ), or want to combine a trip to England with another country, you can drive to England from Europe via either the Eurotunnel or taking one of several car ferries (they also take motorhomes/ campervans on most of the ferry routes.)

If you’re planning a road trip from France to England, which route you take will depend on which part of France and England you want to visit- find out more in our Eurotunnel vs Ferry post.

And if you’re going the other way and will be driving in Europe, make sure you are aware of the new rules for driving in Europe after BREXIT .

If you’re like more help planning your trip, this post about how to plan an epic UK road trip will help.

Is England the UK or Great Britain?

Neither. And part of both 🙂

It’s common for people to confuse an England road trip with a UK road trip. England is just one country within the UK, along with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you want to extend your trip and see more of those countries, you might enjoy our post on the best UK road trips and scenic drive ideas.

The UK is short for ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’.

Great Britain is the LANDMASS of the largest island in the British Isles (the one which makes up England, Wales and Scotland). Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not included in this.

And, to make things even more odd, the British Isles includes ALL the islands, including the whole of Ireland, which isn’t part of the UK at all.

Thoroughly confused? Ok, let’s just stick to England road trip ideas! 🙂

South England Road Trip Ideas

If you’re visiting London and want to explore part of the country for a few days, southern England is a good place to start. Of course, there are a HUGE number of places to explore in ‘South England’ (which is roughly classed as anywhere below Birmingham), so I’m just going to pick a few highlights to inspire you.

Cornwall- South West England

England road trip ideas and itinerary- South England cornwall road trip

Cornwall is one of my favourite places to road trip in England. I spent 2 years living there whilst I was in the Navy, and have been back many times since. There are plenty of things to do in Cornwall , but there are some important tips you need to know before you arrive!

Why is Cornwall one of the best England road trips?

If you want cute villages, incredible beaches and more history than you can shake a stick at, Cornwall is perfect. Also, they have some of the best ice cream IN THE WORLD (no kidding) and it’s perfectly acceptable to eat a scone with jam and clotted cream EVERY day and no one will judge you.

IMPORTANT NOTE : There is intense rivalry between Devon and Cornwall over whether jam or cream should go first on a scone. In Cornwall, they do jam and THEN cream, which is apparently the way the Queen preferred her scones .

(Don’t worry, they’re used to tourists and won’t stone you if you get it wrong. But be warned if you want to live there…!)

In Devon, they do it the other way. I’ve tried both, and I’m a jam first girl (because you can then put more cream on!)

When should you visit Cornwall?

Cornwall is best anytime between Easter and mid-October.

TOP TIP : Avoid July and August if you possibly can. The schools are on holiday and it feels like EVERYONE in England has travelled to the same small Cornish village as you.

Beaches are overcrowded, parking becomes a struggle and there’s a very real chance of shops running out of ice cream. Don’t do that to yourself. You deserve that ice cream.

Also, many businesses and attractions close after mid-October for the winter, so you might find you can’t do everything you want to outside the season.

Having said that, we find Cornwall one of the best places to enjoy Autumn in Europe – the weather is still warm, but everywhere is quieter and easier to get to.

How long should you spend roadtripping Cornwall?

How long is a piece of string!! But, as you can see on our Cornish road trip itinerary , we recommend 7-10 days minimum to see all the best places.

Where are the best places to visit in Cornwall on a road trip?

Did I mention that I used to live here? I have SO many recommendations for places to visit we could be here all week!!! Some of my absolute favourites (and this is like choosing my favourite child… or chocolate bar) include:

  • Tintagel Castle (the home of Arthur and the round table)
  • Minack Theatre (built onto the side of a cliff)
  • St Michael’s Mount
  • Boscastle (where one of the best witchcraft museums in the world is!)
  • Newquay beach (and bars!)

England road trip ideas and itinerary- Devon road trip south coast england travel

Recommended by Ben at Driftwood Journals

Famed for its endless rolling hills, craggy coastlines and clotted cream delights, Devon is unsurprisingly one of the most popular destinations in the UK – and a dream for rural road-trippers! With wild moors galore, cutesy towns and villages, and bountiful beaches, you don’t have to drive far in Devon to stumble upon scenes of unparalleled beauty.

Highlights and best places to visit in Devon

  • Dartmouth- one of the best towns in the county (and home of the Royal Naval Officer training. I spent a year here…running up those bl***y hills!) Hire a boat and explore the river.
  • Paignton- the beach with the red sand and is also known as the English Riviera.
  • Dartmoor National Park
  • Exmoor National Park
  • Exmouth with its beautiful painted houses
  • Salcombe Harbour – a holiday hotspot for all generations.
  • Dulverton- head to the Copper Kettle tearoom; you won’t regret it!

Devon road trip ideas

Pack up your motorhome/ camper (or car with tent) and find a site with views across the Devonshire cow-grazed hillsides of the Lyn Valley, or out over Dartmoor. You can wild camp in Devon, but not on the moors. Find out more about motorhome wild camping in the UK.

For a coastal trip, explore sea towns like Salcombe and Dartmouth (where you can take a boat up to Greenway, Agatha Christie’s summer home) and round to Exmouth, before heading north to Woolacombe, Dawlish and the fishing boat bobbing harbour of Ilfracombe. Enjoy the bustle and culture in the capital of Exeter or discover the notorious prison of Dartmoor.

Alternatively, head to North Devon and enjoy the wilder seas and views of the north coast. This is a great area for surfing and watersports.

If you have more time (and fuel) to burn, take to the A386 between Appledore and Plymouth, traversing through forested valleys to picture-perfect towns like Great Torrington and Tavistock, where you can tour the tearooms and plan the rest of your trip in the park while dangling your toes in the River Tavy.

But the true beauty of road tripping in Devon is that you don’t really need to plan too extensively. You’ll never be far from a cream tea pitstop, and the verdant country roads will offer up some of the most perfect picnic spots you’ll ever see. All you need is is a full tank, and a little patience when stuck behind tractor after tractor!

When is the best time to visit Devon on a road trip?

As with Cornwall, the best time to visit Devon is Spring to Autumn, but avoid the high summer months if you can, especially if you’re on a UK motorhome holiday .

Can you visit Devon on a day trip from London?

You can, but it’s quite a long drive. I’d say you’d need at least 2 or 3 days to really be able to explore anything.

Dorset- One of England’s Best Road Trips

England road trip itinerary ideas- best places to visit

Recommended by Paul | Anywhere We Roam

The Jurassic Coast stretches 95 miles across Dorset in southern England. With an iconic coastline of towering white cliffs, it’s an excellent destination for a classic road trip. Stunning scenery, historical sites and local breweries make the Jurassic Coast one of the best places to experience the beautiful English countryside.

Dorset road trip- best places to visit?

The main highlight of a road trip to Dorset in the area has to be Old Harry Rocks – a collection of white stone monoliths that have been carved out along the coast. It’s one of the most impressive stretches of scenery in the UK with dazzling chalk stacks assembled like a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be completed. If you get time, be sure to enjoy one of the many fabulous Dorset walks- you won’t regret it.

A thirty-minute drive away, Corfe Castle stands as a reminder of England’s 11th-Century past. It was one of the earliest Norman castles built and today it glows in its dilapidated glory overlooking the Dorset hills. It’s a stunning, photogenic inclusion on a UK road trip.

For another natural phenomenon, Durdle Door is possibly one of the most recognisable symbols of the Jurassic Coast. Over time, crashing waves have eroded limestone stacks in the sea leaving a glorious natural arch.

It’s a beautiful stretch of beach, ideal for a long summer stroll. It’s also next to the famous Lulworth Cove, which is a wonderful place to enjoy an ice cream!

Editors note: (I (Kat) actually jumped off the top of Durdle Door on my hen party!)

After soaking up the stunning scenery, head west to Lyme Regis, a quaint town with a vibrant independent retail scene. The historic Cobb Harbour set against moody cliffs is well-preserved and houses some of the best coffee in the area.

When is the best time to visit Dorset on an England road trip?

The best time to visit the Jurassic Coast on a road trip is from May to early July when the surrounding countryside will be verdant green and covered in wildflowers, but there’s not too much traffic!

Hampshire road trip

car tours uk

Hampshire is another county in England we know well, having lived here for 14+ years. There’s plenty to enjoy on a road trip to Hampshire, from beautiful cities to picturesque country houses.

Highlights of a Hampshire road trip

Some of our favourite places to visit in Hampshire include:

  • Winchester- be sure to visit the Cathedral where Jane Austen is buried and you can see one of the oldest Bibles in the world. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting in December, don’t miss the famous Winchester Christmas Market , held in the Cathedral grounds each December.
  • Highclere Castle (or Downton Abbey, as you might know it!)
  • Lymington – for the oldest open sea water baths in the UK – and the New Forest (check out the Wildlife park there and make sure to take some memorable photos).
  • Hinton Ampner- 18th century famous manor house known for its gardens.
  • Portsmouth (you MUST go to the Mary Rose museum and HMS Victory)
  • Isle of Wight (see below)

Isle of Wight road trip

Recommended by Darek | DarekandGosia

The  Isle of Wight , famous for its beautiful views, is an island on the south coast of England, just below Southampton. Technically, it’s part of Hampshire, but feels like a different world.

With a motorhome or car, you can reach the island by ferry from either Southampton or Portsmouth – book in advance during summer. There are also a couple of foot passenger ferries and a hovercraft from Southsea.

Why is it one of England’s best road trips?

The Isle of Wight is like going back in time. It’s worth a road trip here for even a weekend, to escape the hustle and bustle of normal life, ride bikes and take a walk on the cliffs.

Also, there are some wonderful places to stay. If you’re on a road trip, check out these amazing Isle of Wight campsites – some with stunning sea views!

What is there to do?

You can start exploring the island in Shanklin – one of the coastal villages famous for its beautiful beaches. On the promenade along the sea you will find many restaurants and hotels – most of the Island is typically tourist-oriented.

From Shanklin drive to the western part of the island. The most characteristic point is The Needles – three chalk rocks emerging from the sea with a small lighthouse built at the end of one of the columns. You can get to Needles by car and then follow the path on foot to the cliff slope. It’s a fabulous place for a picnic.

Next to Needles is Old Battery, a military fortification dating from the nineteenth century. There you can find World War II memorabilia or visit one of the various exhibitions are also taking place.

While driving around the island make sure you get to Carisbrooke Castle near Newport. Its construction began in the 12th century. It is worth taking a moment to walk around the castle, relax in the Edwardian-style garden.

One of my favourite places on the Island is Osborne House- Queen Victoria’s summer home. You can walk around the gardens and the house and even enjoy an ice cream on her private beach. Osborne House is run by English Heritage.

When is the best time to visit the Isle of Wight?

The Isle of Wight is a must-see for anyone who wants to admire the British climate and above all fantastic views. It is worth going here all year round – it’s actually one of the best places to visit in Europe in October , when there are fewer tourists and you can enjoy the views & roads!

Norfolk Broads

England road trip ideas and itinerary- norfolk

Recommended by Mandi | Big Family, Little Adventures

Sometimes you want nothing more than to escape the hustle and the bustle of everyday life, the noise, the bright lights, the never-ending pace of life. If you want to get away, the Norfolk Broads is pure escapism; big skies, plenty of peace and quiet and an abundance of wildlife.

Best places to visit in Norfolk on a road trip

  • The Old Roman Fort at Burgh Castle with an elevated position and commanding views over the marshes – perfect for a walk in both winter morning frost or a hot and hazy mid-summer evening
  • If you prefer a bit of activity, Wroxham is a bustling Broads village- home to Roy’s of Wroxham, possibly the largest village shop you have ever seen
  • Plenty of riverside pubs and restaurants in Wroxham and all around the Broads- the perfect places to stop for a bite to eat
  • St Benet’s Abbey – an 11th century monastery defying time, standing in a stunning green valley.
  • If you are an animal lover, you will enjoy a visit to Wroxham Barns to feed the lambs or spot the grey seals on the Norfolk beaches

Norfolk Road Trip- when is the best time to visit?

You can explore Norfolk all year. In summer, if you would like to explore the best Norfolk beaches or Broads up close, why not hire a dayboat; these can be hired at various boatyards throughout the Broads. Waveney River Centre is another stunning place to stop and admire the view, either by boat or car.

The challenge is (as always in England!) the weather. In dry conditions, most paths are excellent, but it can get a bit more challenging in wet weather.

However, over the years, an increasing number of boardwalks have been developed, increasing safe access to the Broads whatever the weather. Also, seeing the windmills and rivers on a crisp winter morning is unforgettable.

Time does not stop in Norfolk, but it really does feel like it slows down.  To be able to watch the sunset across the broads any time of year is a magical experience and the perfect place to enjoy a chilled road trip.

Brighton – East Sussex

car tours uk

I’ve given Brighton it’s own section because it’s one of my favourite cities in England and you should try to add it to your England road trip itinerary, especially if you’re heading toward East Sussex.

Brighton is a city renowned for its diverse communities and innovation, the quirky shopping areas, its music and art scene, and its large LGBT population. Read more about Brighton in Autum .

Why is Brighton one of the best England road trips?

Brighton is less than an hour away from London (76 km) and on a direct train line. It offers plenty of fun and exciting activities to enjoy (more than just fish and chips at a pier!)

Brighton has been famous as a cultural centre for over a century. It’s home to the world’s oldest operating aquarium (which opened in 1872- now called ‘’Brighton Sea Life’’), and you can even ride the world’s oldest operating electric railway, the Volks Railway, built in 1883.

Other Brighton Highlights include:

  • See the Palace Pier
  • Catch the latest release in the Duke of York Picturehouse, Britain’s oldest cinema.
  • Have a stroll down the North Lane- home to over 400 independent shops
  • Discover the Victorian innovations still in operation in the city.

How long should you spend in Brighton?

You will want to spend at least two days in Brighton to truly take in the city, but you can easily make a week of your itinerary if you want to explore more places in Sussex, Kent and Surrey.

What is the best month to visit Brighton?

The sunniest (and therefore warmest!) time of the year in Brighton is from May to September. July and August are peak tourist season, with hotel prices skyrocketing, so be aware of that and plan your stay accordingly.

Cambridgeshire & Cambridge

car tours uk

Cambridgeshire is a county in the East of England with plenty to do. The jewel of the county is Cambridge, with a historical, 800-year-old centre you should definitely not skip.

Why should you include Cambridge on your England road trip?

Only 1 hour and 30 minutes away from London via M11, Cambridge offers so much: a rich history of English heritage, a buzzing local community, and a picturesque setting. You’ll even find a gift Henry VIII gave to Anne Boleyn!

Cambridge Highlights

  • See the King’s College Chapel
  • Enjoy breakfast at Fitzbillies
  • Go punting in the River Cam
  • Have a picnic by the river.
  • Enjoy walking the historic streets

Cambridge Trip Itinerary idea

Leaving London, head up to Cambridge via the M11.

Start the day with drinks and a meal in one of the many deli and brunch places in Market Square before setting off to explore the city. I highly recommend the famous Fitzbillies- the food is delicious.

From there, you can choose from a variety of activities: visiting King’s Chapel, punting in the River Cam (pass under the Bridge of Sighs), hiking on the Cam Towpath (lots of hidden gems if you know how to look for trails!), or taking in the city views from St. Mary’s Tower.

If you’re staying overnight, end the day by attending the Evensong at the King’s College Chapel (select days only)

When is the best (and worst) time to visit Cambridge ?

Cambridge is beautiful all year round. However, the worst time to visit would be spring – the university students sit their finals between April and June, which means many of the college sites are closed to visitors.

What are some of the best places to visit in Cambridge?

The King’s College Chapel in the University of Cambridge is the third-oldest university in operation and the most iconic and instantly-recognisable building in the county.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to drink at the Eagle, a historic pub in the heart of Cambridge’s city centre famously linked to Watson and Crick’s discovery of DNA.

If you are feeling adventurous and are ready to brave the British winter, visit Cambridge in December. It’s off-peak season and features one of the best UK Christmas markets you should visit. Read all about the Cambridge Christmas market here.

How long should you spend in Cambridge?

One day in Cambridge is usually enough time to visit the majority of the main sights, especially if you are visiting during the summer. You’ll need tickets for most of the chapels and university buildings, so go first to buy those.

Wiltshire & Cotswolds Road Trip – 3 day trip from London

England road trip ideas and itinerary

Recommended by Ann | The road is life

The Cotswolds is the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England and Wales. If you look at a map of England, find Bristol (west coast, just below the indent of southern Wales) and the Cotswolds is the area north-east of Bristol.

There is so much beauty and fascinating history to discover around the Cotswolds region and luckily you don’t have to travel far from London to get there! You can reach Bath or Bristol easily in a day from London, but we recommend at least 3 days to really explore the area by car/ motorhome, plus explore Stonehenge and Salisbury on the way back to London. If you’re travelling with children, don’t worry- there’s plenty of things to do in the Cotswolds with kids.

Highlights & Best Places to Visit in the Cotswolds and Surrounding Area

  • Explore the charming stone villages of the Cotswolds
  • visit the historic city of Bath
  • marvel at the mysterious ancient stones of Stonehenge
  • Indulge in some shopping at Daylesford farm
  • stop at the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral.

When is the best time for a Cotswolds road trip?

Although the Cotswolds can be visited all year, this road trip is best completed in the spring or summer months to ensure warmer and sunnier sightseeing weather.

The days are also longer- allowing you to see more each day. However, unlike Cornwall and Devon, most places to NOT shut during winter, so feel free to explore whenever suits you!

Wiltshire & Cotswolds road trip itinerary from London

  • Departing London, drive out to the Cotswolds. This is where you should spend 3-4 days exploring as many lovely little towns and villages as you wish to.
  • A few of the prettiest Cotswolds villages include Bibury, Stow-on-the-Wold, Lower Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water, Castle Combe and so many more! The beauty of the Cotswolds region is that the villages are all located in close proximity with minimal driving time in between them.
  • Once you have seen your share of lovely English villages , carry on to Bath which is only a 30-minute drive from the village of Castle Combe- well worth a visit.
  • Spend a full day and night in Bath visiting the Roman baths.
  • From there continue to Stonehenge. A visit to this incredible ancient site can easily take half a day. We camped overnight at Stonehenge and saw the most INCREDIBLE sunrise we’ve EVER seen. (Seriously, watch the video. It’s breathtaking)
  • From Stonehenge, it’s only a short 20-minute drive to the medieval town of Salisbury which brings you to the final stop of this road trip.
  • The highlight of Salisbury is the stunning Salisbury Cathedral which has the tallest spire in all of Britain! Spend one night in Salisbury before making the final 2-hour road trip back to London.
  • Another option is to return to London via the historic city of Oxford. Don’t miss a meal in Sticks and Sushi- one of the best restaurants in Oxford and with incredible views over the city.

North England Road Trips- Why You Should Visit

It’s easy when planning an England road trip to get sucked into famous places like Cornwall, Devon or the Cotswolds- and those are all AMAZING places to visit.

However, I strongly encourage you to visit the north of England as well if you have time. You’ll find villages just as pretty, delicious food (chips, pie and gravy is the best thing in the world) and incredible history.

Again, we were lucky to live up here for 4 years- here are some of our absolute favourite places to road trip, although there are of course many more we have yet to discover! I hope they give you some ideas and inspiration for your next trip.

Peak District National Park

England road trip ideas and itinerary

The Peak District is a huge and stunning area in Derbyshire, just to the east of Manchester. It’s a perfect place for a road trip because there are so many things to see!

A car or motorhome makes it easy to travel between the sites and there are plenty of campsites or hotels to use as you explore.

There are a multitude of hikes, walks and tors to climb and the area is famous for its caves, which people still lived in as recently as 1910!

The Peak District was the UK’s first National Park and is also considered the real ale capital of the world! If you’re exploring the Peak District with kids , there are steam trains, tramways, cycle paths and even a cable car taking you up to see some stunning views! There’s also Alton Towers theme park – one of the best in the UK.

Best places to explore in the Peak District

Some of the highlights include:

  • Chatsworth House
  • Ladybower reservoir
  • Alton Towers theme park
  • Heights of Abraham cable car

Lake District road trip

Lake District Road trip itinerary- England road trip ideas

Recommended by Fiona/ Passport & Piano

The Lake District National Park is a UNESCO heritage site that makes for the perfect road trip.  Walking around the lakes and fells to see the magnificent scenery is one of the many pleasures of the area.

Quintessential villages are plentiful as are traditional English pubs with real ale and hearty food. Don’t just rush by on your way from England to Scotland; take a few days and enjoy all that the lakes have to offer.

Best places to visit on a Lake District Road Trip

Most people arrive from the south via Windermere, but to explore the areas hidden gems its worth spending at least three days here. The Lake District has some of the worlds best scenic drives and a trip along the Honister Pass and Kirkstone Pass are a must.

In the South Lakes, I’d highly recommend a  visit to Grasmere . Here you can visit several homes of the famous poet William Wordsworth and enjoy Sarah Nelson’s delightful gingerbread.

If you love Beatrix Potter, you can follow in her footsteps at Beatrix Potter World in Bowness- on- Windermere.  Her home near Hawkshead is open to visitors, and Wray Castle is a beautiful spot where she enjoyed her family holidays.

In the North Lakes, the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth have plenty to explore. The Castlerigg stone circle, with its stunning views across the fells, is worth stopping at, and the “Surprise View” across Derwent Water is spectacular.

If you’re not exploring in a motorhome or campervan, accommodation throughout the area is plentiful. There are boat rides and water-based activities to enjoy on most of the lakes and a plethora of outdoor pursuit centres for the more adventurous.

When is the best time for a Lake District road trip?

In the summer months, the National Park can be rather busy particularly on the main A66 road which runs through the centre. Hence if you want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting in the spring or autumn.

While you’re not guaranteed sunshine at any time of the year, the weather is probably at its best between April and September.

England Road Trip- Yorkshire & The Dales

England road trip ideas and itinerary- england to Scotland road trip yorkshire

Recommended by Sinead | Map Made Memories

England’s largest county, Yorkshire, is a perfect destination for a road trip. There are so many diverse attractions to see within a relatively short drive of each other.

Highlights and some best places in Yorkshire to visit

  • Hardraw Force–England’s highest single-drop waterfall
  • White Scar–The longest show cave in England
  • Visit the ‘Best Street in Britain’
  • Visit the cobbled Shambles, named ‘the Best Street in Britain’.
  • Marvel at the Ribblehead Viaduct, the 24 arches that span the Yorkshire Dales, a true masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
  • Castles and ruins all over the place
  • Stand on Hogsmeade station (or at least the station which played it in Harry Potter!)

Yorkshire Road Trip Itinerary

Start your road trip in the rolling hills and river valleys of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Visit the 11th century Skipton Castle or descend underground to marvel at the formations in White Scar Caves, the longest show cave in England.

Clamber over Brimham Rocks or hike the stunning landscape around Malham Cove. Browse the independent shops in the Victorian spa town of Harrogate.

Places to visit on the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are packed with attractive waterfalls. Choose between the plunging falls around Ingleton, popular Aysgarth Falls or, my favourite waterfall, Hardraw Force which is England’s highest single drop waterfall. Before leaving the Dales, visit the impressive monastic ruins and landscaped gardens of Fountains Abbey.

Continue your road trip by exploring the historic city of York . This compact city is easily navigated on foot and is an ideal location for history buffs. You can visit Viking, Roman, Georgian and Victorian sites all in one day!

See the iconic York Minster, walk the city’s medieval city walls and stroll along the cobbled Shambles, which has been voted the ‘ Best Street in Britain’ and was the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series!

Road trip over the Yorkshire Moors

End your Yorkshire road trip with a drive across the wild Yorkshire Moors. Take a scenic trip on a steam train across the Moors to visit charming Goathland train station which doubled as Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter movies. Alternatively, your legs with a hike at the Hole of Horcum, a huge ancient natural amphitheatre.

How long should you spend exploring Yorkshire on a road trip?

You could ‘cover’ Yorkshire in a couple of days but to truly appreciate all it has to offer I would recommend at least one full week.

When is the best time to road trip to Yorkshire?

Yorkshire can be explored all year around- and expect rain at any time! But Spring is incredible on the moors- with the wildflowers blooming and the days getting longer, it’s a perfect time to visit. Autumn also offers spectacular views with the leaves turning colour, providing an incredible backdrop.

England Road Trip Idea – North East Coast

England road trip ideas and itinerary- england to Scotland road trip saltburn

Northern England’s east coast is full of charming towns and villages, and is the perfect destination for a road trip.

Best places to visit on a North East coast England road trip

  • Saltburn-by-the-Sea (to search for fossils)
  • Lemon top ice-cream – Its legacy goes back over 100 years!)
  • Staithes- picturesque fishing village
  • Whitby Abbey – the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula
  • Robin Hood’s Bay (where smuggling was commonplace
  • Scarborough Castle

North East England road trip itinerary

Start in Saltburn-by-the-sea. Be sure to search for fossils throughout your visit. I actually found one in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, but you can get lucky in any of the places on this list! Saltburn-by-the-Sea is home to the historic Saltburn Cliff Tramway and affords beautiful views from the bluffs above town.

You can walk along The Cleveland Way, a historic trail that runs through each of the 5 locations mentioned. I’d also recommend trying Lemon Top Ice Cream, or vanilla ice cream with a dollop of lemon sorbet on top.

Staithes is a quaint fishing village laden with narrow pathways and quirky cottages.

The Whitby Abbey towers above the town, giving it an eerie feeling – it’s even credited as the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

Robin Hood’s Bay has a long history with smugglers, and its red rooftops and crowded buildings conceal hidden routes. In Scarborough, you can enjoy rides at the Luna Park amusement park or visit the historic Scarborough Castle!

When is the best time to road trip England’s north-east coast?

Although you can visit this area all year round, I’d suggest visiting in the summer or fall. It rains much of the year in this region of England, but there’s a higher likelihood of sunshine from July through October.

How long to spend on this England Road trip?

You can complete this road trip in less than 2 hours, but I’d suggest spending at least a few days exploring the region. Each Yorkshire coastal town has its own charm and activities to offer, so you certainly don’t want to rush!

How far is it from the North east coast to London?

Scarborough to London takes about 5 hours by car. Avoid travelling Friday afternoons or Monday morning- those are the peak road traffic times.

Don’t miss Durham

car tours uk

We spent a lovely couple of days exploring the city of Durham. There are so many wonderful places to explore, but one of the highlights for us was Durham Cathedral. This incredible building was built in the 11th Century and is the largest surviving stone vaulted ceiling of its size.

However, if I’m honest, I was more excited by the fact that several scenes in Harry Potter were filmed here, including in the cloisters and many of the covered walkways.

It was also in Durham Cathedral that Harry, Ron and Hermione encounter ‘Fluffy’- the forbidden corridor was also part of the cathedral.

Other fantastic things to see in or near Durham include:

  • Durham Castle
  • High Force Waterfall (one of the best waterfalls in Europe )
  • Finchale Priory

Northumberland Coast

England road trip itinerary- North england places to visit- lindisfarne priory

Recommended by Tracy | Travels in Time

The Northumberland Coastal route stretches for over 35 miles from Alnmouth in the south to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the north.

The drive takes you through an area of outstanding natural beauty with many beautiful villages and places of interest to visit along the way.

How long to spend on a Northumberland coast road trip

This itinerary covers a day trip but you could spend a few days exploring the area or even walk the Northumberland Coastal Path along the same route if you are feeling up to it!

Northumberland road trip itinerary

The first village to visit is Craster – famous for its kippers and overlooked by Dunstanburgh Castle. If you’re looking for impressive castles in England , Northumberland is the place to go- there are more castles here than any other county in England!

After exploring Craster and the castle, head to Seahouses. A popular seaside town for families with lots of arcades and fish and chip shops this is the place to stop for a bite to eat.

If the weather is good why not hop on a boat over to the Farme Islands? With large colonies of seals and puffins the islands are popular with nature lovers.

Bamburgh Castle dominates the horizon and is worth exploring. It was once the home to the Royal Seat of the Kings of Northumbria and also has a ghost or two!

After Bamburgh head to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Make sure you check the tides before you go- the island is tidal and is only accessible during certain times.

Once on the island take a stroll up to the castle. Don’t miss exploring the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory. This is the place famous as the home of Christianity in England until Viking raids eventually led to the abandonment of the priory.

When is the best time for a Northumberland road trip?

The best time to visit Northumberland and places in North East England is in the summer – the days are long and the sun will hopefully be shining! Be aware that on occasions during the summer a sea fret (mist) can hang over the coast and cool temperatures and decrease visibility. Make sure to check the weather forecast before you travel.

Wow- anyone else want to jump in their motorhome/ camper/ car/ bike and head off to start exploring? What a fantastic list of England road trip destinations!

As you can see, it really doesn’t matter where you go or how long you have to explore England- you’ll have plenty of places to enjoy. And who knows- next time we set off for Norfolk, we might even make it there without swinging by Cornwall first!! 🙂

Cornwall is such a beautiful part of the UK to visit in a motorhome, although it can be a little tight around those country roads.

So true- some of those roads are tiny, but worth it for the incredible views and places to visit.

Have you been on the welsh coast much

Our very first motorhome trip EVER was to the Welsh coast. We’ve put together some of our favourite Welsh road trips here if you want some ideas: https://wandering-bird.com/wales-road-trip/

Although all road trips are lovely, I particularly enjoy traveling in a campervan through Devon in the UK. I appreciate you sharing this list of road trip suggestions.

Where we stay two nights in a hotel then dinner will be included on the first evening, leaving you free to dine at your leisure on the second evening, although we do offer recommendations in the tour book. When the hotel is rural and there is nowhere else nearby to dine, we shall include dinners.

Half a bottle of wine per person is included with each dinner. Please let us know when booking if you don’t drink wine so we can make alternative arrangements.

Tour Pack

Each car is given one of our famed, very comprehensive Tour Books with easy-to-follow, narrative-style directions. We also include route maps, hotel details, and lots of information on everything to do, see and visit each day. The tour book also has lots of useful and interesting information about the country or region you’re visiting. All cars on our escorted tours will be given a good, clear and detailed road atlas showing the areas you’re travelling through. Tour packs also include a rally plate, pen & highlighter, and window sticker. Each tour pack will come in a clear plastic zip folder to keep it dry and secure – ideal for open cars in particular. On some longer tours we also give branded clothing or bags.

Services provided can extend to corporate wait and return, as directed by passenger, chauffeur-driven day tours from London and extended chauffeur-driven tours of the entire UK.

VIP experiences

Your vacation to Britain will be a special event, a milestone birthday, mark your 50th, 60th or 70th with a series of moments of fun for you and your loved ones. While on honeymoon take the Belmont boat (Pic below-left) for a cruise down the Thames from Cliveden House (PICTURED BELOW). We are here to add those VIP touches that will make your Luxury Vacation extra special without the enormous price tag.

Hotels to match your style

Part of what makes your vacation unique is where you stay. We have the knowledge to match accommodation preferences with your budget.  There are an incredible variety of places to stay in Britain and Ireland. Stay in castle style hotels, historic manor house hotels, and homely guest houses all on a single tour of Britain and Ireland.  Stay in a private castle, gatehouse, folly, fort, lighthouse or historic country cottage this is often the way the British enjoy Britain. Be surrounded by glorious countryside but walking distance to a genuine village pub and be intrigued by living, but for a short time somewhere special.

Thank you all for your nice comments

Our clients return year after year simply because they know we care about their vacation; we want to Make-it-Special, every time. We craft our private tailor-made tours carefully, offer individual access, and make sure our value far exceeds the price. We would like to thank our clients who have taken the time to write and wish us well and appreciate us. Many thanks - The Luxury Vacations UK team.

My family from the US came over for my birthday celebrations in March and arranged a 2-day private tour with Andrew and Graham. In a nutshell, it was amazing. It was just before lock-down when things were starting to close and have limited access, but Andrew managed to change the schedule accordingly to ensure that still we got the most out of the tour.

He and Graham were great company and by the end of the 2 days' we had all bonded! My cousin uses a wheelchair and they seem-lessly assisted him in and out of the vehicle.

We had a great time and saw so much in a short time. Andrew's extensive knowledge on each destination was captivating and his passion for the subjects he talked about was evident.

Highly recommend - you will have an amazing time! Thank you again :)

Lisa F Private tour of Royal London

We came in for a week to visit family and did a private and personalized tour of the London area with Luxury Vacations UK. Everything went fabulous! We had two tour guides, Andrew and Graham, and traveled in style in a very comfortable 15 seat Mercedes minibus for two full days. They even had a professional SLR camera and took some nice group photos for us. Their friendly nature and deep personal knowledge of British history made the experience of visiting some of the castles and churches only that much better.

There were some special needs for one of us and they took care of getting a scooter rented and available for us the whole time we were there. if you are planning to visit the UK, and want to do it "right" then I highly recommend their services. Thanks again Luxury Vacations UK!

Michael M The only way to see London! - Private tour of Royal London

We used their services for a week when we visited London in May of 2019. They were very professional, on time in picking us up at our hotel, and the van was impeccable. Also, they bought the tickets for the attractions we visited which was so helpful for a party of 18.

We were delighted with the tour guides and driver who were wonderful to us. Especially Andrew, who upon learning of our granddaughter's birthday, bought her a book about birds which she loves.

I would highly recommend them and would certainly use them again.

Barnard P Luxury tour of London

Luxury vacations tour of Wales and England Our group of four ladies had a fabulous five day private tour with Luxury Vacations. After a one day tour in London, our private guide Chris Abbott joined us for the remainder of our trip. Chris was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, easy going, fun and flexible. Chris was even able to put up with four loud, laughing ladies for four days—quite a gentleman.

The staff at Luxury Vacations were polite and made it easy to plan our trip. They worked with us to plan a trip that catered to our specifications. Our accommodations were picturesque and high end.

Vivian T Luxury Vacations tour of England and Wales

Chris Abbott was truly a knowledgeable, friendly, and personable guide and driver. I would definitely use this company with Chris as guide for our trip to Ireland in the near future. Gary G.

Classic Grand Touring

On Saturday the 22nd June, two of our guests and fellow countrymen were tragically involved in a fatal road traffic accident on the Chinon Tour in France.

Their car was struck by a third party entirely unrelated to the event they were driving on. Sadly, the lady passenger succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at hospital. Her husband remains in a critical condition.

All of us at Classic GT are utterly devastated and our hearts and thoughts are entirely with the family and loved ones of the victim and her husband who remains in our prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

You might, for example, wish to combine a visit to Stonehenge with a visit to the ancient stone circles of Avebury and to the City of Salisbury with its fine medieval cathedral. You may want to explore some of the charming villages and the beautiful countryside to be found in the Cotswolds. Along the way, you're free to stop anywhere that catches your interest - it's your holiday after all!

Perhaps you already know where you'd like to visit, but if you need help in planning your day, please get in touch with David's Day Tours and we can help you to make the most of your day.

We'll collect you from your London hotel in the morning at a time to suit you, and then return you to your hotel or other location of choice in the evening. If you'd like a very early morning start, that's no problem. Half day and multi-day tours are also available.

If you have any other requirements you'd like to discuss, we are pleased to be of assistance.

Remember, it's YOUR day for YOU to decide when and where to go.

My husband I went to the UK on our first overseas trip in May and June. We planned to visit our ancestory places after doing an intensive coach tour. We booked David's Day Tours before we left Australia. David made it easy for us to do that and pay a deposit on line. As our ancestors villages were out of the way places, we asked David if he would take us on a single day trip for Cliff's ancestors, to Hellions Bumpstead. David had not been there himself, but made it seem easily accessible and allowed us plenty of time to attend the church, where Cliff's grandparents were married. David gave us time  to take photos and meet the Vicar and the warden, and wait while we were able to search church records after the service.  Nothing was rushed. David is a really friendly, patient and knowledgable person. He  then suggested places of interest for us to see. Once he discovered our interests of aircraft and vintage cars, he used the rest of the day to take us to Duxford Air Museum, and we had the added bonus of a war military display on at the time. We were able to see and go through a Concord, amazing.

Our next trip was a two day trip with David to North Huish and Lupridge farm, Bigbury and Bigbury-on-Sea, none of which David had been to himself. Again David found the places with ease, and the lovely B&B where we stayed way out in the country of Kingsbridge. After visiting and many stops for photos, visiting churches and walks through cemetries, David took us back to our hotel in London. He took us to some amazing places on the way back including the Beuileui National Car Museum, the largest in the UK. A highlight of the tour. These were lovely surprises that David suggested, that we had no idea of, and which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We would unreservedly recommend to anyone wanting a special tour, or something extra ordinary, with a really nice guy, go with David's Day Tours.  Kindest Regards,

Ruth and Cliff. Australia, July 2014

I am writing to say thank you for your driving, tour assistance and company during the 3 days that you drove us around the area. We travel often and made many travel related arrangements over the years. Few have, from our perspective, worked out as well as yours! A.B, California, November 2012

Land Rover driver who killed two girls in crash won’t face charges

Two students were killed (Picture: LNP/Rex/Met Police)

The driver of a 4×4 that ploughed into a school in Wimbledon, south west London , in July last year, killing two eight-year-old girls, will face no criminal charges.

The Land Rover driver suffered an epileptic seizure at the wheel, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

The driver of the car has expressed her ‘deepest sorrow’ and said she has ‘no recollection of what took place’.

The collision happened at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon, southwest  London , on July 6 last year.

Pupils at the all girls school were in for their last day of term   when the vehicle careered through the grounds and hit a wall.

Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad both died from injuries sustained in the crash, with 16 others injured in the chaos.

Trevor Sterling, lawyer for the families, told Metro.co.uk: ‘The families are devastated, but not because of the decision itself but because they have not been sufficiently reassured by being able to see the evidence.

He continued: ‘This is disappointing; justice must not only be done, but seen to be done.

Pupils left tributes for their friends after the tragedy (Picture: Getty)

‘In the absence of a process, how do we interrogate the evidence? What does this message send to the public that deaths can arise in a road traffic situation, and there could be no sanction because there is no process to interrogate the evidence?

‘The next focus will be on the inquest, and there will be a deep and thorough review of the evidence, which will be examined by a jury if necessary.’

Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor with oversight of the Crown Prosecution Service London Homicide Unit, said: ‘We have carefully considered this complex and sensitive case, taking into consideration all the material gathered as part of the lengthy and detailed police investigation.

‘Because there is nothing to suggest the driver could have done anything to predict or prevent this tragedy, it is not in the public interest to pursue a criminal prosecution.

‘In reaching this decision we have considered the driver’s full medical records, obtained by police, and received evidence from neurological specialists, who agreed that the driver had a seizure and that this was the first such medical episode she had experienced.

‘Throughout this process we have met with the bereaved families on several occasions, to ensure they are kept informed of the case progress and to fully explain the decision we have made. Our thoughts remain with them today, as well as with the other injured victims and the wider school community upon whom this tragic incident has had a profound impact.’

Mr Sterling continued: ‘The issue is they [CPS] cannot prove culpability, and the operative word is prove. Without seeing the evidence it’s difficult to know whether that’s correct.

‘We will have to wait for the inquest, only then we can interrogate the evidence.

‘If you ask a driver how were things moments before the incident, and they say they can’t recall, then you have no evidence.’

A woman, aged in her 40s, is understood to have been behind the wheel of the 4×4 when the crash happened.

The school, which costs £5,565 per term, is for girls aged four to 11 and sits on Wimbledon Common, just a mile away from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club as it hosts the world-famous tennis tournament.

The celebration held on July 6 last year had been ‘eagerly anticipated’, the private school said in a  statement  on its website.

‘A happy occasion with parents, pupils and staff gathering in the sunshine at Wilberforce House to mark the end of the summer term,’ the statement said.

‘It suddenly turned to tragedy and the pain now being felt by the girls’ bereaved families is unimaginable.’

In a statement at the time, Selena’s family described her as ‘an intelligent and cheeky girl adored and loved by everyone’.

For Nuria’s loved ones, she was the ‘light of our lives’ who ’embodied joy, kindness and generosity and she was loved by all around her’.

VW reveals UK specifications for the ID. Buzz LWB & GTX

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has launched the ID. Buzz LWB (long wheelbase) in the UK for a starting price of £59,545. The company has also released the specifications of the ID. Buzz GTX for the market and plans to announce pricing soon.

car tours uk

The VW ID. Buzz LWB measures 4,962 mm in length, which makes it 250 mm longer than the normal wheelbase (NWB) version . The electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) uses the whole additional length for an extended wheelbase, which is 3,239 mm. It is available in five-, six-, and seven-seat layouts and its sliding rear doors are 192 mm wider to give third-row passengers more space for ingress and ingress.

In the five-seat configuration, the VW ID. Buzz LWB offers 1,340 litres of luggage space, 219 litres more than the NWB model. Folding the rear seat expands that capacity to 2,469 litres. As for the seven-seat configuration, it has 306 litres of cargo space behind the third-row seat, which is completely removable.

Along with more passenger and cargo space, the VW ID. Buzz LWB has a larger 86 kWh battery pack, which powers a 210 kW electric motor on the rear axle. Customers can charge this battery pack at up to 11 kW (AC)/200 kW (DC). A 10-80% DC fast-charging session takes less than 30 minutes. They can select from two trims – Life and Style, in which the electric people mover delivers a WLTP range of 291 miles (468,319 km) and 286 miles (460 km), respectively.

The VW ID. Buzz LWB costs £59,545 (70,367 euros) in the Life trim and £64,345 (76,036 euros) in the Style trim and its deliveries will start later in 2024.

VW ID. Buzz GTX – Go-fast electric MPV with more power and grip

The VW ID. Buzz GTX targets customers who seek more performance and better driving dynamics and is available in both NWB and LWB versions. It’s an AWD model with two motors, a primary, 210 kW unit in the rear and an assisting, 80 kW motor in the front. The two motors give the EV a total output of 250 kW and let it accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.1 seconds (NWB)/6.5 seconds (LWB).

Powering the two motors of the VW ID. Buzz GTX is a 79 kWh battery pack in the NWB version and an 86 kWh battery pack in the LWB version. The WLTP range figures of the new model are not yet available.

The VW ID. Buzz GTX has a sportier styling with changes like a special honeycomb grille featuring, a distinctive bumper, new side air guide elements, and exclusive GTX Black 21-inch ‘Townsville’ alloy wheels. Gloss black highlights on various exterior parts, such as the air intake grille, the door mirror housings, and the GTX branding, add to the bespoke look. Another unique facet of the exterior is a new Cherry Red solid paint option, and customers can combine it with Mono Silver metallic if they want a two-tone finish.

car tours uk

The interior of the VW ID. Buzz GTX adheres to the sporty theme with multiple exclusive features. These include a black headliner, black ArtVelours Eco microfleece seat covers featuring a new diamond pattern, red contrasting seams, and red piping, and a special steering wheel with red-cross stitching on the cover, red trim on the centre, and chrome GTX lettering. The NWB version is a five-seater with a 40:60 split three-seat bench in the second row, while the LWB version is only available as a six-seater with two individual seats each in the second and third rows.

Deliveries of the VW ID. Buzz GTX also may also commence later this year.

Winter energy bills are projected to rise significantly due to an uptick in the wholesale market, according to a closely watched forecast.

Market specialist Cornwall Insight released an updated winter forecast ahead of the latest price cap change kicking in on Monday.

Britons who pay by direct debit will see their typical annual bill for gas and electricity go down 7%, or £122, to £1,568 this week until 1 October.

However, a 10% rise is then expected, taking the annual bill for a typical household back up to £1,763, Cornwall predicts.

This is actually slightly lower than its previous forecast - but still represents bad news for Britons who may have thought energy bills were on a linear path down following two years of sky-high prices.

"The drop in forecasts for October are positive, but we need to keep this in perspective," the Cornwall report says.

"We are still facing an average 10% increase in bills from October, and as winter approaches this will put a strain on many household finances."

We'll have experts from Cornwall Insights and consumer group Which? answering your energy-related questions here in the Money blog on Monday afternoon - so whether it's about why bills could rise again or if now is a good time to switch, submit your query above.

By Jess Sharp , Money team

Splitting up household jobs, whether that be cleaning, washing or life admin, is an issue that affects a lot of couples.

Starling Bank found women do a total of 36 hours of household tasks and admin per week - equivalent to a full-time job.

This is nine hours more than men - and yet men believe they do the majority in their household. The average man estimates they do 52% of work overall.

It's the discrepancy between perception and reality (and, of course, this can work both ways) that leads to arguments.

Couples who don't divide the housework equally have roughly five arguments about housework each month - rising to eight for couples who rely on just one person for the work.

We spoke to relationship expert Hayley Quinn about the best ways to split household work - and how to deal with arguments should they arise with your partner.

She explained that it's necessary to be "transparent" when deciding how to split the workload - but also to be flexible in order to find a solution that suits all involved.

While a 50/50 split might be your idea of perfection, Hayley said it was "almost inevitable that one partner may take on slightly more of the load" at different periods of time.

"Striving for perfect 50/50 fairness at all times is a really nice ideal, but it just may not be that practical for modern life," she said.

She said some jobs may be more visible than others, like cleaning, sorting out the washing, and taking the bins out.

Other jobs can take up just as much time and resource, but will fly under the radar. She gave the examples or sorting out travel insurance or changing over internet provider.

How should you approach a conversation with your partner about splitting the work?

To start off, Hayley said you should enter the conversation with a positive mindset - think how you are both contributing to the relationship in different ways.

"When you're having these conversations, it's not that many people are sitting around feeling like they're not contributing," Hayley said.

"In fact, I think if there's a discrepancy in how people contribute, it's just due to a lack of awareness as to what the other partner does, and some chores are just more obviously visible than others."

Try to avoid starting the chat with the perspective that you are working a lot harder than your partner and they're not pulling their weight.

"That way, you start from a place of we're all on the same team," she said.

"When you're doing that as well, it's really important not to make statements which assume what the other partner is thinking, feeling, or contributing.

"So, for instance, saying something like 'I'm always the one that's picking the kids up from school and you never do anything',  becomes easily very accusational, and this is when arguments start.

"Instead, most partners will be much more receptive if you simply ask for more help and assistance."

When asking for help, Hayley said it's important to ask in a way that's verbal and clear - don't assume your partner is going to intuitively know what share of household chores to take on if you just complain.

"In a nice way, explicitly ask for what you want. It could be something like saying, 'Look, I know that we're both working a long week, but I feel like there's so much to do. It would be really helpful if... I'd really appreciate it if you take over lunch,'" she explained.

"Again, start from a place of appreciation. Acknowledge what your partner contributes already, and be explicitly clear as to what you would like them to do. Phrase it as a request for their help."

She also said some people can feel protective of how jobs are completed, and learning to relinquish that control can be helpful.

"If you want it to feel more equitable, you have to let your partner do things in their own way," she said.

What happens if that doesn't work?

If you find the conversations aren't helping, you can always try organising a rota, Hayley said.

She recommended using Starling Bank's Share the Load tool to work out your chore split.

However, she said if you feel there are constant conversations and nothing is changing then the issue is becoming more about communication than sharing the workload.

"It's actually about someone not hearing what you're trying to communicate to them, so it's more of a relationship-wide issue," she said.

She advised sitting down and trying to have another transparent verbal conversation, making it clear that you have spoken about this before and how it's making you feel in a factual way, without placing blame.

Using phrases like "I've noticed" or "I've observed" can help, she said.

If after all that, the situation still isn't getting better, she said it's time to consider confiding in friends or family for support, or seeing a relationship counsellor.

The oldest and most prestigious tennis event in the world returns on Monday, with the best of the best players to battle over two weeks to be named champion.

Crowds in their thousands will flock to Wimbledon to enjoy a spot of sport - as well as the range of food and drink on offer.

It's not the cheapest day out, with a cool cup of Pimms setting you back just under £10 and a bottle of water coming in at nearly £3.

But did you know that despite souring inflation in recent years sending food prices through the roof, one fan favourite - the quintessentially British strawberries and cream combo - has stayed at the same price since 2010?

A pot of the sweet snack costs just £2.50, making it one of the more affordable offerings at the All England Club. It has been served up there since the very first Wimbledon tournament in 1877.

Perdita Sedov, Wimbledon's head of food and beverage, previously told The Telegraph the price freeze "goes back to a long-standing tradition" of strawberries and cream being associated with the championship.

"It's about being accessible to all," she said.

According to the Wimbledon website, each year more than 38.4 tonnes of strawberries are picked and consumed during the tournament.

Ofgem is being urged not to lift a ban on acquisition-only energy tariffs (deals that are available only to new customers, not existing ones).

A coalition of consumer organisations and energy companies led by Which? has penned a letter to the government regulator for electricity and gas warning it of the risk of a "return to a market which discriminates against loyal customers".

They have also raised the potential impact on customers in debt, who may not be able to switch but could also find themselves struggling to access a better deal with their current supplier under the plans.

The letter also notes the "very recent history" when more than 30 suppliers went bust - many after trying to win customers with unsustainably cheap tariffs.

Ofgem has said it could remove the ban on acquisition-only tariffs from 1 October but consumer choice website Which?  has research that shows the public are opposed to cheap deals that exclude existing customers, with 81% feeling it would be unfair if their supplier was offering cheaper deals to new customers only.

The consumer champion has signed the letter to Ofgem alongside E.ON, Octopus, So Energy, Rebel Energy, End Fuel Poverty Coalition, Citizens Advice and Fair by Design.

Two topics dominated our inbox this week.

Many readers got in touch about our Weekend Money feature on older Britons who face having to work past pension age to pay off long-term mortgages.

Lots of you share the fears of those we spoke to in the feature...

I am in my 70s with still about five years to go on my mortgage. It stands at 30k on a 300k house. The mortgage repayments are £800 a month, this doesn't sound much but on a static pension it is massive and I am literally on the point of not having sufficient money to pay it. Red
I was supposed to retire in 2.5 years at 66 and 4 months, my mortgage finishes when I'm 70. I was paying off extra (double) on my previous rate to reduce an interest only mortgage, but the recent increases in mortgage rates have meant I'm paying off hardly any. AVB
I'm 67 and still trying to pay off a mortgage that has another five years to run. I can't stop working and do over 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. Keith
My problem is going to be paying off an interest-only mortgage. More than anything I wish I hadn't changed when I had my twins but we couldn't make ends meet at the time. Sazavan
Six years ago I reached the age of 70 and my interest-only mortgage ended - to extend it was impossible with the conditions attached. This then threw me into the rental market, paying more than my mortgage. Now I am facing eviction from the rental due to it being sold. Marianj

We also heard from a mortgage adviser, whose recommendations matched those of Gerard Boon, the managing director of online mortgage broker Boon Brokers, who we spoke to for the feature...

I am a mortgage adviser in Leicestershire and have found an increasing number of people asking to go as long as possible past normal retirement age. I always point out that it's great to have lower payments in the short term but you will need to work to 75. There's no choice. Semaine

Onto the second topic that dominated your correspondence, and we were sorry to learn that lots of you face similar issues as reader Adam, who has had to take his faulty car back to the garage six times - and is still not convinced it is fixed.

Scott Dixon, from The Complaints Resolver , was on hand to help break down what Adam could do for our Money Problem feature - read his advice here:

Same thing happened to me, except that they didn't let me refund the vehicle and claimed it was my fault even though I told them about the issue during the six months' warranty multiple times... they barely replied. K
I have bought a used car and there is an engine management light on. The garage where I bought it from has since changed name and moved premises (found out by accident). When I call to book in I am told to expect a call back or the mechanic will ring me but they never do. Andy D
I have taken my car to Halfords four times in the last 14 months. Each time they guarantee me it's fixed and within a week it's back to normal. Can I get it repaired elsewhere and bill Halfords? Simon
I have a JAG SVR that's been faulty since day one, the garage sent me home with it faulty and not working correctly. I have tried to reject it but the finance company are playing David versus Goliath... we can prove issues from day one, we have two vehicle reports to back it up. Jezza
Have a Nissan Juke, which has a seat issue where it sinks on its own… Nissan saying it's not a manufacturing fault, but "user error". Where do I stand in getting it fixed? Technical team keeps fobbing it off as our fault. Esmith97

Starting from next month, gamers will be able to play Xbox titles like Fallout 4, Starfield and Fortnite using Amazon Fire TV.

A new upgrade coming to the Fire TV 4K devices transforms your television into a console, thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

You'll need to be a member of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to take advantage, plus you'll need a compatible controller and a solid internet connection.

"One of the biggest benefits of cloud gaming is the ability to play premium games without needing a console," Amazon explained.

"The Fire TV Stick may be compact, but it can stream and run graphically intense Xbox games like Senua's Saga: Hellblade II.

"This portability also means you can easily move your cloud gaming setup from the living room TV to a different room or even take it on the road.

"As long as you have a solid internet connection and your compatible Fire TV Stick, and a compatible controller, you can take your Xbox Game Pass games and saved progress travels with you."

Once downloaded, the Xbox app is designed to offer a smooth and seamless experience. Here’s how it works:

  • Install and launch the Xbox app from your Fire TV device;
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account to play. If you’re an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member, you’ll have instant access to hundreds of cloud-enabled games;
  • Connect a Bluetooth-enabled wireless controller. Controllers like the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense, or DualShock 4 controller are all compatible.

A new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K will set you back £59.99 on Amazon, while a new Xbox Wireless Controller costs £49.59.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate currently costs £1 for the first 14 days for new members, then is billed at £12.99 per month.

House prices are overvalued by thousands of pounds, according to a major property company.

The typical property is £20,000 more than is affordable to the average household, says Zoopla.

But rising incomes and longer mortgage terms mean the "over-valuation" is expected to disappear by the end of the year.

Zoopla's report said: "House prices still look expensive on various measures of affordability.

"We expect house price inflation to remain muted, likely to rise more slowly than household incomes over the next one to two years."

The average house price is around £264,900 – but according to Zoopla's calculations, the affordable price is £245,200.

"A new government will add a dimension of political stability when the autumn market starts in September and even if the [Bank of England base] rate is not lower by then, a cut will be imminent," said Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at estate agent Knight Frank.

"Given that mortgage rates will steadily reduce as services inflation comes under control, we expect UK house prices to rise by 3% this year."

Zoopla's over-valuation estimate was reached by comparing the actual average house price in its index with an "affordable" price, which was calculated based on households' disposable incomes, average mortgage rates and average deposit sizes for home buyers.

It's one of the most iconic and popular music festivals in the world, and it's notoriously hard to get a ticket.

Glastonbury has rolled around once again and roughly 210,000 people have flocked to Somerset this year as Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA headline the UK's biggest festival this weekend.

Those in the crowd are in the lucky minority — an estimated 2.5 million people tried to get tickets for this year's event, meaning the odds really aren't in your favour if you fancy going.

Tickets routinely sell out within an hour of going on sale, and that demand is unlikely to decrease next year, given the festival will likely take a fallow year in 2026.

So, if you're feeling jealous this year, how do you get tickets for Glastonbury 2025, and how can you give yourself the best possible chance?

We've run through all the available details as well as some tips so you're best prepared when the time comes.

Registration details:  Before potential festivalgoers get the chance to buy tickets, they must register on the official website.

One of the reasons this is done is to stop ticket touting, with all tickets non-transferable. Each ticket features the photograph of the registered ticket holder, with security checks carried out to ensure that only the person in the photograph is admitted to the festival.

Registration is free and only takes a few minutes. You will be asked to provide basic contact details and to upload a passport-standard photo.

Registration closes a few weeks before tickets are released.

Where to buy tickets:  Tickets can be bought exclusively at  glastonbury.seetickets.com   once they become available.

No other site or agency will be allocated tickets, so if you see anyone else claiming to have Glastonbury tickets available for purchase, it's most likely a scam.

When tickets go on sale: We don't know the details for next year yet - but Glastonbury ticket sales usually take place in October or November of the year before the festival.

This year's ticket sales began, following a delay, in November 2023. Coach tickets typically go on sale a few days before (traditionally on a Thursday), with general admission tickets following on the Sunday morning a few days later.

For those that miss out, there's also a resale that takes place in April for tickets that have been returned or for those with a balance that has not been paid.

This year's April resale took place on 18 April (for ticket and coach travel options) and 21 April (general admission tickets and accommodation options).

How much it costs:  General admission tickets for this year's festival cost £355 each, plus a £5 booking fee. That's an increase on last year's price of £335 each, which was also an increase on the 2022 price of around £280.

So, we can probably assume that ticket prices will go up once again for next year's festival.

Remember, there are options to pay for your ticket in instalments, so you won't have to pay the full price in one go if you don't want to. All tickets are subject to a £75 deposit, with the remaining balance payable by the first week of April.

It's also worth noting that Glastonbury is a family festival, and that's reflected in the fact that children aged 12 and under when the festival takes place are admitted free of charge.

TIPS FOR THE BIG TICKET SALE DAY

The scramble for tickets when they go on general sale is nothing short of painstaking, with demand far outweighing supply.

Here are some tips to give you the best possible chance of bagging tickets:

Familiarise yourself with the website: You may see a reduced, bare-looking version of the booking page once you gain entry. The organisers say this is intentional to cope with high traffic and does not mean the site has crashed, so be sure not to refresh or leave the page.

Once you reach the first page of the booking site, you will need to enter the registration number and registered postcode for yourself and the other people you are attempting to book tickets for.

When you proceed, the details you have provided will be displayed on the next page.

Once you have double checked all of your information is correct, click 'confirm' to enter the payment page, where you will need to check/amend your billing address, confirm your payment information, accept the terms and conditions, and complete the checkout within the allocated time.

Timekeeping: You can get timed out if you don't act fast, so it's a good idea to have your details saved on a separate document so you can copy and paste them over quickly.

You might also have to approve your payment, which could mean answering security questions from your card issuer. Have a device on hand to ensure you're ready for this.

Internet connection: This should go without saying, but you won't stand a chance without a solid internet connection.

Avoid trying to rely on your mobile phone signal, and politely ask those you might share the internet with to delay any online activity that might slow your connection.

Don't give up: Until the page tells you that tickets have sold out, you still have a chance.

Shortly before that point, there will be a message saying 'all available tickets have now been allocated,' which users often think means their chances are up.

What it actually means is that orders are being processed for all the tickets that are available. But if somebody whose order is being processed doesn't take our previous advice and runs out of time, their loss could be your gain.

Multiple tabs and devices: Glastonbury advises against its customers trying to run multiple tabs and devices to boost their chances of getting a ticket.

Glastonbury's website says running multiple devices simultaneously is "a waste of valuable resources, and doesn't reflect the ethos of the festival".

"Please stick to one device and one tab," it adds, "so that you can focus on entering your details without confusing your browser and help us make the ticket sale as quick and stress free as possible for all."

Shoppers have been buying bigger TVs to enjoy this summer's European Championships, according to the electrical retailer Currys.

The chain said UK sales were up by more than 30% in the past month, with "supersize" screens — 85-inch and above — selling well in the run-up to the Euros.

"Having a third of the TV market and the Euros being a big event for many people, we're seeing that super-sizing trend keep on giving," said Currys chief executive Alex Baldock.

The most popular, and also cheapest, 85-inch TV on the Currys website costs £999.

The most expensive super-size TV is a 98-inch offering from Samsung that will set you back £9,499.

Currys reported adjusted pre-tax profits of £118m for the year to 27 April. That represented a 10% increase from the previous year's profits of £107m.

Like-for-like sales for Currys UK and Ireland declined by 2% to £4.97bn in the 12 months to 27 April, with consumer confidence knocked by high inflation levels and rising interest rates.

"We can see our progress in ever-more engaged colleagues, more satisfied customers and better financial performance," Mr Baldock added.

Taylor Swift in Dublin: Ticket information, setlist, stage times and more

Everything you need to know about the star’s dublin concerts on june 28th, 29th and 30th.

Ready for it? Taylor Swift ’s colossal Eras Tour is finally coming to Dublin . If you haven’t been planning your outfit like the rest of us for the past year, what have you been doing? It’s nearly time to break out the cowboy hats, boas and all things sparkly.

More than any musical act before her, Swift – who jets around in a private aircraft – has somehow become the most relatable woman in pop by monetising her heartbreak with ridiculously catchy tunes. Since most of us were introduced to Swift with her 2008 hit Love Story, she’s had a chameleonic career. (It’s a little terrifying to think that there will be 16-year-olds at the concerts who weren’t even born when Love Story dropped.) She conquered pop with Red and 1989, took a badass turn in 2017′s Reputation and soothed us during the pandemic with her ethereal Folklore and Evermore albums. Her latest break-up album, The Tortured Poets Department , became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single week.

With dozens of Grammys under her belt over the last 14 years, it was difficult to see how she could get any bigger. How about playing songs from every album – or “era” – at the one concert? It was bold, but it has paid off spectacularly.

Last year’s US leg of the tour was the first in history to make more than $1 billion (€920,000). It is estimated the international stint of the tour will increase that figure to as much as $4 billion (€3.7 billion). Last year she was reportedly receiving $27 million per three-hour show. That’s $150,000 per minute or $2,500 per second. Love her or hate her, that’s impressive. And she’s the first musician to become a billionaire purely off her music alone, and all at the age of 34.

Few artists have the ability to alter the local economy when their show comes through town, but of course Swift can. It appears there’s nothing she can’t do when she sets her mind to it. If The Irish Times received reports she had floated off the Aviva Stadium stage and into the sky, we’d nearly believe it.

Swiftonomics and levitating stars aside, playing live shows off the back of a hit record can be daunting for an artist. But there’s little doubt Swift will meet the exceedingly high expectations. So what can we expect for Swift’s first gig in Ireland since 2018?

When does she play?

The star will play three concerts at the Aviva Stadium on June 28th, 29th and 30th.

Are tickets still available and where can I collect mine?

Are you joking? If you’re reading this you’re probably still traumatised by The Great (Ticketmaster) War of 2023 – as dubbed by Swifties across the world. They fought tooth and nail to get to the front of a digital queue and secure coveted tickets for the Eras Tour. So yes, the concerts are sold out. However, the odd resale ticket has been surfacing on ticketmaster.ie – of course, for ludicrous prices – but keep an eye out there if the fomo gets too much. Buy tickets from accredited sources only.

What if I have a ticket, but need to collect it?

If you are one of the lucky few heading to the gig, Ticketmaster box offices will be located at the Lansdowne Road/Northumberland Road junction for ticket collections.

All early entry VIP ticket holders will be contacted by Ticketmaster via email about entrance information.

Who is the support act?

American pop-punk icons Paramore will warm up the stadium for Swift. As if 50,000 screaming fans wasn’t enough.

What time should I arrive?

Doors open at 5pm before Paramore kick things offat about 6pm. Swift is expected to grace the stage about 7.30pm.

If you would like to buy merchandise but will not have time and/or don’t want to carry it around with you, then fear not, Swift (or her management team, most likely), have thought of everything.

There will be an early merchandise day as part of the tour at the 3Arena, from 10am-8pm on Thursday, 27th June, and from 10am onwards on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 28th-30th June. This is open to all, whether you have a ticket or not.

#DublinTSTheErasTour Early Merch Day will be 27, 28, 29 & 30 June from 10am onwards (27 June 10am - 8pm) and open to all + info https://t.co/cGs2seFqTL pic.twitter.com/41tM9rgngc — MCD Productions (@mcd_productions) June 22, 2024

How do I get there and home again?

Map showing Taylor Swift at Aviva Stadium access routes

Taylor Swift at Aviva Stadium access routes

Organisers have said fans should allow for sufficient travel time to and from the venue. As traffic and parking delays are inevitable, you are encouraged to walk, cycle, use public transport and private coach services.

By Luas: The stadium is a fair walk from the nearest Luas stop. It’s about a 30- 40-minute walk from Ranelagh, Charlemont, Harcourt, St Stephen’s Green, Dawson and Trinity on the Green Line.

By train: Lansdowne Road Dart station is less than a minute’s walk from the southern end of the stadium. There will be large crowds entering and exiting the stadium at the same time, so plan accordingly.

By bus: The Dublin Bus routes that serve the Aviva Stadium are the 1, 4, 7, 7a, 38, 38a, 47, C1 and C2.

When you get to the Aviva, there are a number of entrance routes depending on where your ticket is for:

  • For the Blue Route (West Stand Upper), enter via Shelbourne Road.
  • For the Orange Route (West Stand Lower), enter via Lansdowne Lane.
  • For the Green Route (South Stand and Main Pitch Standing), enter via Lansdowne Road.
  • For the Purple Route (East Stand), enter via Herbert Road/Tritonville Road.
  • For the Red Route (Gold Circle), enter via Bath Avenue.

A spokesman for Irish Rail confirmed to The Irish Times that extra commuter and Dart services before and after Swift’s concerts will be in operation. He said the weekend of Taylor Swift’s concerts is likely to be the busiest of the summer, with a lot of people descending on the capital. Shania Twain is performing in Malahide on the Friday; Dublin Pride and Longitude take place on the Saturday; and Fairview Park concerts and All-Ireland football quarter finals in Croke Park will take place across the weekend.

Irish Rail has advised those travelling to and from these events to plan carefully. Customers are urged to allow extra time for your journey, as high volumes of passengers will likely cause delays. And people not attending these events have been asked to avoid these routes during event times. As part of a Garda event plan for major events at the Aviva Stadium, Grand Canal Dock Station will be closed at the end of the concerts. Irish Rail events teams will be on-site at stations for all big events to assist customers travelling.

For Intercity customers, there will be late-night services after each concert at 12.40am from Heuston to Cork, with a connection to Limerick. This service must be booked in advance. More information can be found at irishrail.ie .

There are also plenty of commercial operators providing services to and from the concert, such as: Travel Master , Irish Concert Travel , Concertbus.ie , BusesToConcerts.com , JJ Kavanagh , Matthews Coaches , Halpenny Travel , East Coast Coaches . Even Belfast City Sightseeing is getting in on the action. Tickets on these services are booking out fast, so don’t waste time if you’re yet to book a seat.

By car: There is no bike or car parking at the stadium on concert days for security reasons. There are, however, commercial car parks around the city, such as Claremont Parking or Q-Park , but spaces are limited. If you’re travelling from outside the county and have a friend with a space in their driveway within the M50, that could be a good shout.

[  The Eras Tour movie review – Swifties lose all inhibitions during this spectacle like no other  ]

What will she play?

The Eras Tour is a tightly choreographed show, and you can expect little change in her set list from previous concerts. Since the release of her Eras Tour movie, which grossed more than $260 million (€239 million) last year, she has included songs from The Tortured Poets Department to the set list. This is what she performed at a more than three-hour show in Lyons earlier this month, arranged by album:

  • Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince
  • Cruel Summer
  • You Need to Calm Down
  • You Belong With Me
  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
  • I Knew You Were Trouble
  • All Too Well
  • ... Ready For It?
  • Don’t Blame Me
  • Look What You Made Me Do

Folklore/Evermore

  • champagne problems
  • illicit affairs
  • my tears ricochet
  • Blank Space
  • Shake It Off
  • Wildest Dreams

The Tortured Poets Department

  • Female Rage The Musical (Medley of My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys; Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?; loml; So Long, London; But Daddy I Love Him.)
  • So High School
  • Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?
  • The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
  • I Can Do It With a Broken Heart

Surprise songs

  • Glitch/Everything Has Changed
  • Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus
  • Lavender Haze
  • Midnight Rain
  • Vigilante Sh*t

As always, Swifties are an active fan base. If you’re a Spotify user you can listen to this fan-made playlist to get yourself hyped. It has a whopping 1.2 million likes on the platform.

What’s the story with security?

Don’t bring a bag unless absolutely necessary, as you’ll be patted down and searched while everyone else is fast-tracked through security. Any bag must be smaller than a sheet of A4 paper. Banned items include umbrellas, large-lens professional cameras, flagpoles, selfie sticks, sticks for banners, anything that could be used as a weapon, bottles, glass vessels, cans, flasks, frisbees, illegal substances, scooters, skateboards or other skates, laser devices, prams or pushchairs, inflatable or folding chairs, suitcases, laptops, illegal merchandise, hampers and cool boxes, air horns, and all animals except service dogs and guide dogs.

What about disabled access?

Contact MCD productions at [email protected] for accessible parking and information about wheelchair access to the venue and accessible seating.

Can I take photographs at the concert?

Yes, but only with a smartphone or small digital camera. Professional cameras with a detachable lens and any other recording equipment are banned.

What’s the weather forecast?

At the time of writing, there is no rain expected at all this weekend. Friday is set to be cloudy with temperatures between 11-19 degrees. Saturday will see some clouds but also some sun and temperatures between 13-19 degrees, while Sunday will be much the same, with temperatures between 13-17 degrees.

The show will take place rain, hail or shine though, so keep an eye on the ever-changing Irish weather forecast and dress accordingly. Think wellies, boots or runners, layers, raincoats/ponchos and sun cream. But remember – no umbrellas. Let’s just hope it’s not a cruel summer.
