'Go ye' is as much a part of Christ's Gospel as 'Come unto Me.'

The command has been to "go," but we have stayed - in body, gifts, prayer and influence. He has asked us to be witnesses unto the uttermost parts of the earth... but 99% of Christians have kept puttering around in the homeland.

I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done in China...I don't know who it was...it must have been a man...a well-educated man. I don't know what happened. Perhaps he died. Perhaps he wasn't willing...and God looked down...and saw Gladys Aylward...and God said, 'Well, she's willing.'

To stay here and disobey God - I can't afford to take the consequence. I would rather go and obey God than to stay here and know that I disobeyed.

The Adventist Health Mission Trip Experience: Palpable Joy and Giving Back

Feb 8, 2024

Image

After almost a day in the air, Chris Champlin and his wife, Kim, arrived in Nairobi, Kenya at 3 a.m. alongside 18 other Adventist Health Associates. After navigating customs at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport, they were met by Andy Aho and his son Dustin from African Mission Services. Following a brief, much-needed break to stretch their legs, the group boarded a bus bound for Mara West Camp at the entrance to Maasai Mara National Reserve.

As the bus negotiated its way out of the airport onto the main highway, Chris and Kim were surprised to see pedestrians on the highway. As the rising sun’s rays began to illuminate their drive, the parade of pedestrians increased. Intrigued, they asked John Schroer, the trip leader, who explained that it is commonplace in Kenya for people to walk everywhere, often tremendous distances. Over the course of the 170-mile, 12-hour trek to Mara West Camp, the group encountered adults, teens and children, some pint-sized, walking or herding cows, sheep and goats along the highway.

As daylight broke, the group was met with a breathtaking blue sky, checkered with clouds so picturesque that it felt like you could reach out and grab one. When they arrived at their lodgings on a high bluff overlooking the reserve, they were awarded their first view of the vast, untouched plains that stretched across the horizon in perpetuity.

“I felt so small looking out into that vastness,” Kim said, noting the stark contrast between the crowded confines of the West Coast of California and their new, temporary home. “It felt like there was an openness, and a calmness to everything. It was so peaceful and beautiful.”

The Maasai Mara National Reserve served as the backdrop for an Adventist Health mission trip in October. Chris, President of Adventist Health and Rideout, and Kim were part of an 18-person team hailing from Adventist hospitals in California, Oregon and Hawaii that volunteered their time to support African Mission Services’ efforts with the Maasai tribe. As an extension of African Mission Services – an international non-governmental organization that assists rural, underdeveloped communities within Africa – the team provided dental services, clinic construction work, reproductive education and even delivered an ultrasound machine.

In return, Chris, Kim, and company immersed themselves in the Maasai culture and made some lifelong memories – and friends – along the way.

An Easy Decision

The question was never “if” Chris and Kim were going to take a mission trip, but when. Kim had previously been part of a mission trip in the South Pacific during college, and shared how meaningful the experience was with Chris. So, when a meeting at Adventist Health headquarters in Roseville put a spotlight on the organization’s global mission program, it was already an easy decision for the pair.

“The people I know that have done mission trips always come back looking and feeling like they had been fulfilled,” Chris said. “It was something I wanted to experience.”

The cherry on the mission trip sundae, then, was the opportunity to visit Africa, a destination that had long been on their bucket list. A pair of plane tickets to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and many, many hours of travel later, the two arrived, excited, and ready to do their part.

An Absence of Complication

Once they settled in, Chris could not help but notice the contagious attitude of everyone they encountered.

“The joy. The joy was palpable,” Chris said. “Nobody was angry, or hangry. There was no road rage. Everyone was just like, ‘hey, cool, it’s a nice sunny day, and we’re alive.’

“There was a real simplicity to everything, and a real lack of stress and anxiety.”

In practice, there really isn’t room for those kinds of emotions. The Maasai people live an extraordinarily simplistic lifestyle. They wake and sleep by the rise and fall of the sun. They sustain themselves on a diet built on beans and rice, and lots of it. They are a herding tribe, and their livestock is their currency.

It is an existence that could be considered one of poverty in the United States. And yet, when the team arrived in camp, they were met with nothing but smiling faces.

“They loved on you like anything,” Kim said. “They were so warm and welcoming, and they got to know each and every one of us.”

Time Well Spent

During the team’s stay with African Mission Services, they broke into groups each day to provide different services. Kim and a group of nurses, for example, visited several schools to teach reproductive hygiene to middle school girls, almost 800 in all. Chris spent his time helping with the construction of Africa Mission Services’ new women’s clinic. A group of dentists provided oral care, and another group set-up and customized an ultrasound machine. This group also taught the African Mission Services’ team how to use the equipment.

In each of these instances, the team grew close to the Maasai people they interacted with. Kim described watching as an older girl taught her younger counterpart about reusable sanitary napkins. Chris recalled a conversation he had with a few Maasai boys who could not comprehend why he had only two kids. On their second day in camp, their new friends threw Kim a birthday party.

“The people, they just fill your cup,” Chris said. “You wonder how someone with so little can have so much to give. But they are happy. They sing, they dance, they love, and they give.”

Kim added that the team they shared the experience with was a huge part of what made the mission trip special. People from all walks of life, and all over the Adventist Health network, came together for a common purpose.

“You create such lifelong bonds with these people, and with this team,” Kim said. “I feel blessed and fortunate that we were able to go. I can’t find the words to truly describe what I got out of it.”

Now, a few months removed from their trip, Chris and Kim see the experience not just as a milestone in their lives, but as the next chapter in their journey. The trip cost time, money, and effort. But the tradeoff was being able to give back to those in need. The pair and their team gladly made that deal. And they would happily do it again.

“This was a real, dramatic version of ‘go make somebody’s life better,’” Chris said. “All I had to do was nail boards to a ceiling. And because of that, someone is going to have a better facility to deliver babies in. What an easy thing to do, right?

“If we can leave this world having made it better for even one more person, our time here was worth it. To me, this was the start of that.”

153 themes for your next mission emphasis event.

mission trip slogans

The following list of mission emphasis themes is meant to help you choose a topic or message that you want to build a mission emphasis event/service around. The theme can influence the choice of music, sermons, and decorations.

Consider the needs of your church. What are the mission priorities of your congregation? What is on people's hearts? What theme might connect with the mission work your church is involved with? You may want to center your theme on a certain passage or verse in Scripture. A hymn or song with a mission focus may also influence your choice of theme. This can be sung during the service to reinforce the theme.

Use your theme to promote your mission emphasis event. Use it in your bulletins and other print pieces, as a banner in the front of the sanctuary, or on PowerPoint slides for the service. Once your theme is chosen, be sure to advise everyone involved. The participants should have enough notice so as to be able to plan their part (messages, music, decorations, etc.) around the theme.

The themes listed below can be used as they are, but feel free to do a variation of any of the suggestions.

  • In the case that Adventures cancels a trip, a group’s funds are refundable up to the $75 per person deposit. This deposit is able to be applied toward a future trip with Adventures.
  • Adventures will make cancelations 60 days before a trip, except for the case of unpredictable or extenuating circumstances.
  • In the case that a group decides to cancel, their payments can be applied toward a future trip with Adventures but are not refundable.
  • Groups must notify Adventures of a decision to cancel 60 days before the trip. After this point we cannot guarantee any re-application of funds.

COVID-19 Trip Guidelines

Adventures encourages all participants to follow CDC guidelines and local regulations at all times. These guidelines will likely change between now and the time of your trip. We will discuss these changes with you as part of your preparation leading up to your trip. It’s important that your group familiarize themselves with these guidelines and make the appropriate preparation before the trip begins.

Having said that, we have also established these basic guidelines for all Adventures Short Term Mission trips.

  • Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire before traveling to their destination.
  • Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire each morning before breakfast.
  • Trip participants should maintain social distancing, including in ministry. When not socially distanced, wear a mask.
  • Each participant should bring at least three masks to wear throughout the week.
  • All participants will be required to have their temperature checked by the Project Leader each morning. The Project Leader will be equipped with a temporal thermometer.
  • No large group gatherings. We will coordinate with our ministry partners to try to ensure that there are no large group gatherings. In the case that there are, this is done at the discretion of the ministry partner and participants should not feel obligated to attend. It’s our objective to have plenty of smaller service opportunities, such as serving at food pantries, doing work projects at churches or ministries and ministering to people in smaller groups and in a safe, responsible manner.

100.4 degrees fahrenheit

They will be quarantined and taken to a facility to have a COVID test taken. They will remain quarantined for 10 days, per CDC guidelines.

They will be quarantined from the rest of the group and everyone will follow CDC recommendations.

Exposure means 15 minute of close interaction. In this case, the participant will enter the quarantine protocol.

The participant should notify their Project Leader or group leader and remove herself/himself from the situation.

Each location will be prepared with quarantine recommendations. Each situation is unique and will be handled specifically to address the needs of the individual, the group and others who are involved.

Each group is financially responsible for their own flights. We cannot reimburse any costs associated with travel. Please check with the airline about their flight cancellation policy.

Most of the time this decision is made for us by local authorities. In some international cases, airlines may decide to not fly into a country. We look at government recommendations, airline activity and discuss with our partner. This, paired with our ongoing attention to CDC and WHO recommendations and regulations, usually makes the decision to cancel very clear.

65 Missions Quotes From Missionaries, Pastors, & Authors

65 Missions Quotes From Missionaries, Pastors, & Authors

After his death and resurrection, Jesus gave the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

As followers of Jesus, it is our duty to obey His command and take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, where there are still billions of people who have yet to hear of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

If you’re seeking inspiration for a passion for global missions, need content for a sermon or message on missions, or desire to know the Lord’s heart for missions, look no further. Here are 65 missions quotes from missionaries, pastors, authors, and scripture itself.

Missions Quotes by Missionaries

“God isn’t looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him.” —Hudson Taylor

“Missionaries are very human folks, just doing what they are asked. Simply a bunch of nobodies trying to exalt Somebody.” —Jim Elliot

“You have been speaking about William Carey. When I am gone, say nothing about William Carey; speak only about William Carey’s Savior.” —William Carey

“It was strictly forbidden to preach to other prisoners. It was understood that whoever was caught doing this received a severe beating. A number of us decided to pay the price for the privilege of preaching, so we accepted their (the communists’) terms. It was a deal; we preached and they beat us. We were happy preaching. They were happy beating us. So everyone was happy.” —Richard Wurmbrand

“If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.” —C.T. Studd

“Any church not involved in the Great Commission has forfeited its Biblical right to exist.” —Oswald J. Smith

“People who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives, and when the bubble has burst, they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted.” —Nate Saint

“If God wills the evangelization of the world and you refuse to support missions, then you are opposed to the will of God.” — Oswald J. Smith

“Missionary zeal does not grow out of intellectual beliefs, nor out of theological arguments, but out of love.” —Roland Allen

“We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first.” —Oswald J. Smith

“Had I cared for the comments of people, I should never have been a missionary.” —C.T. Studd

“Here I am, send me; send me to the ends of the earth; send me to the rough, the savage pagans of the wilderness; send me from all that is called comfort on earth; send me even to death itself, if it be but in Thy service, and to promote Thy Kingdom.” —David Brainerd

“Oh, that I could spend every moment of my life to God’s glory!” —David Brainerd

“I cannot tell you what joy it gave me to bring the first soul to the Lord Jesus Christ. I have tasted almost all the pleasures that this world can give. I do not suppose there is one that I have not experienced, but I can tell you that those pleasures were as nothing compared to the joy that the saving of that one soul gave me.” —C.T. Studd

“All my desire was the conversion of the heathen… I declare, now I am dying, I would not have spent my life otherwise for the whole world.” —David Brainerd

Missions Quotes by Pastors and Authors

“To belong to Jesus is to embrace the nations with Him.” —John Piper

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor.” —Charles Spurgeon

“A congregation that is not deeply and earnestly involved in the worldwide proclamation of the Gospel does not understand the nature of salvation.” —Ted Engstrom

“These bold brothers and sisters weren’t just willing to live for Jesus; they were willing to die for Him. I asked myself—as I have a thousand times since—why are so few of us in America willing to live for Jesus when others are so willing to die for Him? Seeing Jesus through the eyes of the persecuted church transformed me.” —Johnnie Moore

“Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” —John Piper

“The Christian is not obedient unless he is doing all in his power to send the Gospel to the heathen world.” —A.B. Simpson

“Whatever we do, we must not treat the Great Commission like it’s the Great Suggestion.” —Charles R. Swindoll

“God is pursuing with omnipotent passion a worldwide purpose of gathering joyful worshipers for Himself from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. He has an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the supremacy of His Name among the nations. Therefore, let us bring our affections into line with His, and, for the sake of His name, let us renounce the quest for worldly comforts and join His global purpose.” —John Piper

“Missions is not for the hyperactive Christians in the church. Missions is the purpose of the church.” —Robby Gallaty

“The Great Commission says to make disciples, not get followers. There is a difference.” —Miguel Nunez

“If you take missions out of the Bible, you won’t have anything left but the covers.” —Nina Gunter

“If a missionary is offended that you ask for a description of what she did during the past week or month, be concerned. A willingness to move overseas for the Gospel doesn’t say anything about their character, competence, or work ethic.” —Andy Johnson

“The church was God’s idea. It is His one and only organizational plan for world missions. Any humanly invented organizations that assist in missions must remember that they are the bridesmaids, not the bride.” —Andy Johnson

“You have one business on earth—to save souls.” —John Wesley

“I believe, as followers of Christ, we are commanded to reach out to the least of these in the name of Jesus and show them they matter a great deal to God, who sacrificed His only Son to reach them with His love.” —K.P. Yohannan

“‘Not called!” Did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin.” —William Booth

“Go, send, or disobey.” —John Piper

“Every Christian a missionary; every non-Christian a mission-field.” —Winkie Pratney

“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry “Mine!” —Abraham Kuyper

“The way you store up treasure in heaven is by investing in getting people there.” —Rick Warren

Quotes About Missions

“We are debtors to every man to give him the Gospel in the same measure in which we have received it.” —P.F. Bresee

“I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light.” —John Keith Falconer

“If a commission by an earthly king is considered an honor, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?” —David Livingstone

“I believe that in each generation God has called enough men and women to evangelize all the yet unreached tribes of the earth. It is not God who does not call, it is man who will not respond.” —Isobel Kuhn

“The concern for world evangelization is not something tacked onto a man’s personal Christianity which he may take or leave as he chooses. It is rooted in the character of the God who has come to us in Christ Jesus. Thus, it can never be the province of a few enthusiasts, a sideline, or a specialty of those who happen to have a bent that way. It is the distinctive mark of being a Christian.” —James S. Stewart

“The Gospel is only good news if it gets there in time.” —Carl F.H. Henry

“The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed.” —Hudson Taylor

“The command has been to “go,” but we have stayed—in body, gifts, prayer, and influence. He has asked us to be witnesses unto the uttermost parts of the earth… but 99% of Christians have kept puttering around in the homeland.” —Robert Savage

“If the Great Commission is true, our plans are not too big; they are too small.” —Pat Morely

“The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become.” —Henry Martyn

“Never pity missionaries; envy them. They are where the real action is–where life and death, sin and grace, heaven and hell converge.” —Robert C. Shannon

“Go ye’ is as much a part of Christ’s Gospel as ‘Come unto Me.’ You are not even a Christian until you have honestly faced your responsibility in regard to the carrying of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.” —J. Stuart Holden

“It is not in our choice to spread the Gospel or not. It is our death if we do not.” —Peter Taylor Forsyth

“God is a God of missions. He wills missions. He commands missions. He demands missions. He made missions possible through His Son. He made missions actual in sending the Holy Spirit.” —George W. Peters

“Missions is the natural response to believing the Gospel.” —Cale Etter

Vertical Response

How do you create a slogan that captivates and defines your brand? Slogans are the heartbeat of a company’s messaging, but crafting one that stands out requires insight and finesse. This guide breaks down the elements of a compelling slogan, gives tips for crafting your own, and examines iconic slogans that changed the game.

Key Takeaways

A great slogan distills complex ideas into a memorable phrase that captures your brand’s personality and core values.

Crafting a powerful slogan involves understanding your brand, knowing your audience, and embracing simplicity to resonate emotionally and linger in minds.

To make your slogan effective, integrate it consistently across all marketing channels, ensuring it becomes a unifying identity marker for your brand.

The Essence of a Slogan in Branding

Imagine a world where brands communicate without slogans. It would be like navigating a city without street signs—confusing and forgettable. A slogan is the essence of brevity in branding, distilling complex messages into a few striking words. This catchy phrase is a blend of wit, emotion, and personality, making it an exceptional tool for branding that speaks directly to the heart of your target audience. Whether you’re a small business or an emerging brand, a slogan clarifies your advertising message and cultivates a distinctive identity, setting you apart in a crowded marketplace.

Slogans like rhythmic drumbeats, echo a brand’s significant message, fostering a lasting impression in the minds of consumers. They are not just marketing fluff but the linchpin in the wheel of brand identity. Crafting a great slogan is akin to lighting a beacon that guides your customers to your brand, time and time again.

Crafting a Slogan That Resonates

When you’re creating a slogan, you’re not just stringing words together; you’re encapsulating the soul of your brand into a memorable phrase. But how does one concoct a concoction of words that resonates? Keep reading, and we’ll explore the ingredients of a slogan that sticks.

Understanding Your Brand’s Core Values

Before the words take shape, immerse yourself in the essence of your brand. What beats at the heart of your business? A business slogan is the public declaration of your company’s core values—be it innovation, quality, or customer satisfaction. They are the promises you make and the expectations you set.

When a slogan communicates a key quality or distinctive attribute, it resonates with customers on an emotional level, forging a connection that goes beyond the transactional. It’s about inspiring the perfect slogan that not only speaks about who you are but also connects with your audience’s aspirations.

Knowing Your Audience

Your slogan’s charm lies in its ability to speak directly to the hearts of those you wish to reach. Dive deep into the demographics and psychographics of your target audience—understand their desires, challenges, and the language they speak. Your target audience is the group of consumers most likely to fall in love with what you offer, and your slogan should be their love-at-first-sight.

Imagine a slogan as a cozy little nook in a customer’s mind, where your brand cuddles up every time a related product comes up in conversation.

The Power of Simplicity

In the world of slogans, less is often more. A simple slogan is not only easy to remember, but its message rings loud and clear. Shed the complex and the cluttered, and embrace clarity—because when a brand like Dollar Shave Club says ‘Eat Fresh’, like Subway, it’s not just about the menu, it’s an invitation to a lifestyle.

So, when crafting your slogan, aim for precision; just a few words can say more than a thousand and help you save money.

From Concept to Catchphrase: Realizing Your Slogan

Taking a slogan from a glimmer in your mind’s eye to a phrase on everyone’s lips is a journey of creative discovery. It’s about finding the essence of your brand and expressing it in a way that captures the imagination.

Let’s take a look at how to bring your slogan ideas to life.

Utilize a Free Slogan Generator

Stuck on the first word slogan? Free slogan generators are your creative sidekicks. These tools, infused with AI magic, can churn out a plethora of ideas at the click of a button, given a few inputs about your brand and some brainstormed keywords. Think of them as a springboard for inspiration, helping you leap over the hurdle of the dreaded creative block and making the slogan generator work for you.

With a variety of data-driven suggestions, these generators can kickstart the process of crafting a slogan that sticks and strengthens brand loyalty, like the iconic “finger lickin good” or the “ultimate driving machine.”

Engage with a Slogan Maker

Sometimes, what you need is the fresh perspective of a seasoned professional. Collaborate with a slogan maker—these maestros of messaging can help you distill your brand’s ethos into a resonating, unique slogan. They not only streamline the process but also ensure that your time and resources can be invested elsewhere in your marketing strategy.

Creative agencies and marketing firms bring a wealth of expertise and innovative ideas to the table, crafting slogans that truly connect with your audience. And remember, before your slogan takes flight, always perform a legal check to ensure it’s available for use and not stepping on any trademark toes.

Test and Refine Your Slogan

The true test of a slogan’s mettle is in the crucible of public opinion. Employ focus groups, online surveys, or social media polls to gauge its impact. In today’s digital age, AI tools can also provide invaluable feedback on your slogan’s emotional impact and memorability.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to confirm that the slogan not only embodies your brand’s message but also serenades your audience.

Integrating Your Slogan into Your Marketing Campaign

Integrating Your Slogan into Your Marketing Campaign: Illustration of a cohesive brand image across various marketing channels.

Your slogan is a shining star in the galaxy of your marketing campaign, guiding customers to your brand universe. To achieve this celestial alignment, you must weave your slogan consistently across all marketing channels, enhancing brand recall and solidifying your brand identity.

Advertising and Promotional Materials

A slogan’s power is magnified when it’s the heartbeat of your advertising campaigns, resonating with the essence of your brand. It’s a strategic tool that elevates your brand above the noise of the competition, creating a unique voice in the cacophony of the market. Emotionally charged slogans have the power to tug at heartstrings, fostering brand loyalty and a positive perception of your brand.

Ensuring your slogan’s presence across platforms, from print to pixels, fortifies brand consistency and cements your message in the collective consciousness.

Packaging and Merchandising

The journey of a slogan extends to the tactile world of packaging and merchandising. When your slogan graces your product packaging, it becomes an ambassador, whispering your brand’s promise in the shopper’s ear, tipping the scales in your favor at the point of purchase. Branded content, like your logo and slogan, on packaging doesn’t just look good—it feels good, enticing customers and enriching your brand image.

Strategically placed, whether on the outside to catch the eye or on the inside for a surprise, the right placement of your slogan can turn a simple product into a memorable experience.

Digital Presence

In the digital realm, your slogan must be omnipresent, seamlessly integrated into your website, email marketing, and online content to create a unified brand image. It should stride alongside your logo across all digital marketing materials, reinforcing your brand identity in a succinct and memorable fashion.

As part of the digital experience, your slogan complements your brand’s story, echoing your values and mission across the vast digital landscape.

Case Studies: Slogans That Made History

Now, let’s turn the pages of history to revisit some iconic brand slogans that have stood the test of time. These slogans have not only captured the essence of the brands they represent but also carved their place in the consumer psyche, becoming more than just words—they’re part of our culture.

Nike – “Just Do It”

The story of Nike’s “Just Do It” is one of sheer brilliance and boldness. Born in 1988, this slogan catapulted Nike from a mere 18% to a staggering 43% market share in a decade, turning sneakers into statements of fashion and personal aspiration. It’s a call to action that resonated with every American, regardless of age, gender, or physical fitness, embodying the spirit of achievement and perseverance.

The campaign’s success was amplified through diverse media, from billboards to merchandise, solidifying Nike’s image as an innovative American icon. Even the controversies, like the social movement sparked by Colin Kaepernick’s involvement, only served to heighten the slogan’s presence in public discourse.

Coca-Cola – “Open Happiness”

Coca-Cola’s “Open Happiness” is more than a slogan—it’s an invitation to a world of joy and connection. By linking the act of sipping a Coke with positive experiences, the brand has woven itself into the fabric of happiness itself. The strategy behind the slogan is to evoke feelings that transcend the product, making Coca-Cola synonymous with optimism and pleasure.

This approach has made the brand a luminary in the art of emotional marketing, demonstrating the power of a slogan to become the heartbeat of a brand’s identity and solidifying the brand’s image.

De Beers – “A Diamond Is Forever”

De Beers’ “A Diamond Is Forever” is a masterclass in elegance and emotion. With just four words, the slogan encapsulates the timeless allure and luxury of diamonds, associating them with everlasting love and commitment. It’s a testament to the enduring power of simplicity in creating a slogan that not only defines a brand but also an entire industry.

As we conclude our journey through the art of slogan crafting, remember that your slogan is the voice of your brand. It’s the crystallized expression of your identity, values, and the emotional connection you seek with your audience. A great slogan is a harmonious blend of simplicity, memorability, and resonance—a beacon that guides your marketing campaign and leaves an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of consumers.

In your quest to craft the perfect slogan, let inspiration be your guide, and let strategy be your compass. Test the waters, refine your message, and integrate it across all touchpoints. Draw lessons from the greats but forge your own path. With these insights, set sail toward a slogan that not only captures the essence of your brand but also stands the test of time, becoming a part of the cultural lexicon.

mission trip resources, mission trip planning

Mission Trip Planning 101 (Part 1)

By Austin McCann March 1, 2019

One of my favorite things to do in student ministry is to take students on short-term mission trips. For several years we’ve taken students on LeaderTreks Trips . I love seeing students leave their comfort zone to go serve others in another part of the country or even world. It’s always one of the highlights of my summer. However, mission trip planning for these summer trips starts way before the summer months come around.  Six to eight months out is when the process begins for us and it doesn’t slow down much from that point forward.

I want to share with you the major things we do over that time span to prepare for summer mission trips.

1. Parent Info Meeting

Parents want to know about your upcoming summer mission trip. Many times the key to getting your students on the trip is to make sure their parents have all the information they need. I’ve learned that with mission trip planning the more context and vision you can give parents for your trip early on, the better off you’ll be. This is why we have a parent info meeting regarding our upcoming summer mission trip in December. At this meeting we share the vision behind our mission trips as well as all the known details like dates, cost, and location. We make sure this is also put into a packet that parents can take home with them after the meeting.

2. Applications

We want students to take these trips seriously and realize that it’s not like signing up for a one night event or a weekend retreat. They need to be serious in their commitment to go on our mission trip. This is why we use the language of “fill out an application online” as opposed to “sign up online.” The word “application” carries a more serious tone that we want students to catch on to. This application includes all their basic info as well as questions like: How did you come to faith in Christ?, How are you growing in your relationship with Christ?, and Why do you want to go on this trip? We also put a deadline on these applications so that students have about a month to apply once the applications go live.

3. Interviews

After students apply for our mission trip they must participate in a 15 minute interview with myself or another one of the adult leaders going on our mission trip. This is an opportunity for us to get to know the students better as well as have the chance to ask them any questions that have come up as we reviewed their applications. We usually ask the students to share their faith story and tell us how they are growing in their relationship with Christ during this interview. We also ask questions regarding how they will handle conflict between themselves and their peers on the trip and what aspects of the trip they are most excited/nervous about. The moment we use the words “application” and “interview” many students and parents will start asking, “So will you turn students away?” The answer is “Yes, but not likely.” I’ve never turned a student away from a mission trip, but I would if I saw read flags in their application and confirmed those red flags as I talked to them in person during their interview . (The LeaderTreks Mission Trip  Student Profile is a great resource for understanding your students and knowing how to encourage and challenge them best).

4. Pre-Trip Meetings

Once everything listed above is completed  it’s time to begin our pre-trip meetings. These meetings are a crucial part of our mission trip planning process and will span for across the 4 months leading up to the trip. We usually meet once a month starting in March. At these meetings we do a few things: team building activities, a Bible study focused on missions , ministry work prep, and discussion of important details in regards to fundraising and paperwork required for the trip. These are not optional meetings for the students going on the trip . Students must be at these mission trip planning meetings as they are vital to the overall success of the trip. (Looking for a mission trip planning guide to help you decide when to meet and what to talk about? Check out the LeaderTreks  Mission Trip Planning Guide ).

These are the main things we do to prep for our mission trips. The nice thing about all the things I listed above is that they can easily be done in whatever context you find yourself in. I’d encourage you to take and adapt what we do as you prep for your mission trips.

Why Mission Trips?

We really love teenagers and we deeply care about communities.

When done well, mission trips bring together the best of both worlds in ways that communicate Christ’s servant love, prompt growth and ignite passions. That’s work we want to be a part of!

Mission trips connect people with what God is up to all around them, and teenagers are an important part of what God is doing. The trouble is that sometimes they don’t realize it. Misplaced expectations, infinite distractions and disconnected values have turned the love and service that Jesus intended students’ stories to be about into a mere footnote. But mission trips invite students’ faith to their fingertips, allowing meaningful conversations about why service is essential to following Jesus. Mission trips invite students to be fulltime participants in God’s plan.

Communities, too, are participants in that plan. We know that every community – the ones we visit and the ones we come from – have both strengths and struggles. By entering a different town or city, we get an inside view of another context where Jesus is at work. Alongside the real needs we’ve seen students meet, the people and places we serve have also poured back into church groups. This mutual giving makes mission trips much more than simple service projects. It changes perspectives, shapes passions and alters pursuits. It opens students’ eyes to the incredible possibilities God has put in front of them.

Here’s the deal: We think that every teenager should experience a mission trip that values relationships, respects communities and connects the hands of service with the heart of Jesus. Again and again we see quality mission trip experiences show students how to use their lives to love and value others better.

You see, we’ve never thought of mission trips as a youth group’s “big event” where students finally get to live out their faith. The “big event” of students’ faith happens every day as teenagers find the opportunity to love and serve the people God puts in their path. Instead, mission trips are a launch pad… a drawing back of the bow… a wind-up for the pitch. Mission trips equip and encourage students to go home and love the communities they travel into every day when they roll out of bed.

And God’s mission for us is far more than a trip. But we know, for many, living out that mission begins with a trip. That’s why mission trips will continue to be our work and our passion.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa on Saturday canceled his planned flight around the moon on a SpaceX vehicle because of uncertainty about when it may be possible.

The tycoon in 2018 launched plans for the lunar flyby voyage. He bought seats for eight traveling companions in 2022 for what would be his second space journey after his 12-day trip to the International Space Station on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2021.

Maezawa was aiming the moon trip for 2023, a target seen by most space observers as overly optimistic given the progress of SpaceX’s Spaceship mega-rocket project. It would have been the first private flight around the moon.

That project became “unfeasible,” said the mission organizer on Saturday in a statement posted on its website. “Without clear schedule certainty in the near-term, it is with a heavy heart that Maezawa made the unavoidable decision to cancel the project.”

“To all who have supported this project and looked forward to this endeavor, we sincerely appreciate it and apologize for this outcome,” it said.

Maezawa had selected eight people for his “dearMoon” project from 1 million applicants. They included a lead rapper for the K-pop group Big Bang, and Americans DJ Steve Aoki and filmmaker Brendan Hall.

This photo provided by NASA, an STS-125 crew member aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis captured this image of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope on May 19, 2009. NASA said the telescope slipped into a hibernating state more than a week ago when one of its gyroscopes _ part of the pointing system _ malfunctioned. The same device has been acting up for months and disrupting scientific operations. Hubble remains safe but inactive as flight controllers figure out how to proceed, officials said. The space agency planned to outline a path forward on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.(NASA via AP)

Separately on Saturday, Maezawa said in his message on X: “I can’t plan my future in this situation and I feel terrible making the crew members wait longer, hence (I made) the difficult decision to cancel at this point in time.”

“I apologize to those who were excited for this project to happen,” he said.

He said he signed the contract with SpaceX in 2018 assuming the launch would be possible by the end of 2023. “It’s a developmental project so it is what it is, but it is still uncertain as to when Starship can launch.”

SpaceX’s two test flights of its mega-rocket last year ended in explosions minutes after liftoff. In a third test in March , its spacecraft was lost as it descended back to Earth.

Maezawa and his producer in December 2021 became the first self-paying tourists to visit the space station since 2009.

Maezawa made his fortune in retail fashion, launching Japan’s major online fashion mall, Zozotown.

People are using AI music generators to create hateful songs

A robot reading music

Malicious actors are abusing generative AI music tools to create homophobic, racist, and propagandistic songs — and publishing guides instructing others how to do so as well.

According to ActiveFence , a service for managing trust and safety operations on online platforms, there’s been a spike in chatter within “hate speech-related” communities since March about ways to misuse AI music creation tools to write offensive songs targeting minority groups. The AI-generated songs being shared in these forums and discussion boards aim to incite hatred toward ethnic, gender, racial, and religious cohorts, say ActiveFence researchers in a report, while celebrating acts of martyrdom, self-harm, and terrorism.

Hateful and harmful songs are hardly a new phenomenon. But the fear is that, with the advent of easy-to-use, free music-generating tools, they’ll be made at scale by people who previously didn’t have the means or know-how — just as image, voice, video and text generators have hastened the spread of misinformation , disinformation , and hate speech.

“These are trends that are intensifying as more users are learning how to generate these songs and share them with others,” an ActiveFence spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Threat actors are quickly identifying specific vulnerabilities to abuse these platforms in different ways and generate malicious content.”

Creating “hate” songs

Generative AI music tools like Udio and Suno let users add custom lyrics to generated songs. Safeguards on the platforms filter out common slurs and pejoratives, but users have figured out workarounds, according to ActiveFence.

In one example cited in the report, users in white supremacist forums shared phonetic spellings of minorities and offensive terms, such as “jooz” instead of “Jews” and “say tan” instead of “Satan,” that they used to bypass content filters. Some users suggested altering spacings and spellings when referring to acts of violence, like replacing “my rape” with “mire ape.”

TechCrunch tested several of these workarounds on Udio and Suno, two of the more popular tools for creating and sharing AI-generated music. Suno let all of them through, while Udio blocked some — but not all — of the offensive homophones.

Reached via email, a Udio spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company prohibits the use of its platform for hate speech. Suno didn’t respond to our request for comment.

In the communities it canvassed, ActiveFence found links to AI-generated songs parroting conspiracy theories about Jewish people and advocating for their mass murder; songs containing slogans associated with the terrorist groups ISIS and al-Qaida; and songs glorifying sexual violence against women.

Impact of song

ActiveFence makes the case that songs — as opposed to, say, text — carry emotional heft that make them an especially potent force for hate groups and political warfare . The firm points to Rock Against Communism, the series of white power rock concerts in the U.K. in the late ’70s and early ’80s that spawned subgenres of antisemitic and racist “ hatecore ” music.

“AI makes harmful content more appealing — think of someone preaching a harmful narrative about a certain population and then imagine someone creating a rhyming song that makes it easy for everyone to sing and remember,” the ActiveFence spokesperson said. “They reinforce group solidarity, indoctrinate peripheral group members and are also used to shock and offend unaffiliated internet users.”

ActiveFence is calling on music generation platforms to implement prevention tools and conduct more extensive safety evaluations. “Red teaming might potentially surface some of these vulnerabilities and can be done by simulating the behavior of threat actors,” said the spokesperson. “Better moderation of the input and output might also be useful in this case, as it will allow the platforms to block content before it is being shared with the user.”

But fixes could prove fleeting as users uncover new moderation-defeating methods. Some of the AI-generated terrorist propaganda songs ActiveFence identified, for example, were created using Arabic-language euphemisms and transliterations — euphemisms the music generators didn’t detect, presumably because their filters aren’t strong in Arabic.

AI-generated hateful music is poised to spread far and wide if it follows in the footsteps of other AI-generated media. Wired documented earlier this year how an AI-manipulated clip of Adolf Hitler racked up more than 15 million views on X after being shared by a far-right conspiracy influencer.

Among other experts, a UN advisory body has expressed concerns that racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic and xenophobic content could be supercharged by generative AI.

“Generative AI services enable users who lack resources or creative and technical skills to build engaging content and spread ideas that can compete for attention in the global market of ideas,” the spokesperson said. “And threat actors, having discovered the creative potential offered by these new services, are working to bypass moderation and avoid being detected — and they have been successful.”

Holocaust Museums Debate What to Say About the Israel-Hamas War

Students are bringing up antisemitic tropes and asking survivors and docents: What is Palestine? Is there a genocide in Gaza?

  • Share full article

Rabbi Joe Prass, standing in front of a wall of photos at the Breman Museum in Atlanta, talks with teenagers.

By Dana Goldstein and Marc Tracy

Dana Goldstein, who covers education, reported from Atlanta. Marc Tracy, who covers cultural institutions, reported from New York.

At a Holocaust museum in Atlanta, staff members had typically ended their tours by saying that many survivors of the death camps immigrated to Palestine.

But after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the guides noticed that some students would ask a simple but complicated question: Is this the Palestine that we’ve been hearing about?

So staff members at the museum, the Breman, made a few changes, according to Rabbi Joseph Prass, the museum’s education director. Now, docents explain to visitors that many Holocaust survivors found refuge in “the British Mandate of Palestine” or “the area that would become the country of Israel.”

Each year, roughly two dozen Holocaust museums in the United States teach millions of visitors — often students on field trips — about the Nazi genocide of six million Jews, a history that is fading from living memory.

Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel and the ensuing war, that mission has felt especially urgent, as the number of bias incidents against Jews has risen across the country.

The Israel-Hamas war has also forced museums to confront one of the most emotional and divisive issues within the Jewish community: how to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Many Holocaust museums include the story of Israel’s founding in 1948, depicting the country as a refuge for Jewish survivors. But they often do not mention, or address only in guarded terms, a subject that increasingly interests some visitors: the Nakba, Palestinians’ term for their displacement amid Israel’s founding.

“The question is always context,” said Debórah Dwork, a Holocaust historian at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. And at these museums, she said, Israel’s founding is set in the context of the mass murder of Jews in Europe.

“The Nakba is not part of that context,” Ms. Dwork said. “It’s rarely treated, if at all.”

Many of the museums have a broader mission beyond the Holocaust: They want to raise awareness about prejudice, mass killings and human rights. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington has created case studies of other atrocities, including the Ottoman genocide of Armenians, ethnic cleansing in the Ethiopian civil war and the Burmese killings of Rohingya Muslims, which the U.S. State Department considers to be a genocide.

In May, the Illinois Holocaust Museum opened a core exhibition called “Voices of Genocide,” highlighting the experiences of witnesses to mass killings in Armenia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Guatemala.

And many museums have devoted attention to non-Jewish victims of the Nazis, like the Roma, L.G.B.T.Q. people and people with disabilities, as well as to U.S. civil rights abuses like Jim Crow laws and the internment of Japanese Americans.

Now, the museums must contend with the Israel-Hamas war, and the fact that all sides invoke the Holocaust to make their case. To supporters of Israel’s war effort, there is a direct line between the antisemitism that fueled the Holocaust and the ideology of Hamas, whose attack on Israel made Oct. 7 the deadliest day for Jews since the Nazi genocide.

Others, including many young museum visitors, have heard antiwar protesters’ claims equating the Israel military campaign with genocide. And they have been steeped in social media images that show tens of thousands of Palestinians killed and millions displaced from their homes. For them, no humanitarian crisis is more pressing.

Omer Bartov, a professor of history at Brown University and a scholar of genocide, said that in the current political climate, visitors will naturally have questions about how the museums see the war in Gaza and Israel.

“If you talk about equality, dignity, human rights as the lessons that we learned from the Holocaust, when an entire regime of international law was put into place, does that apply to everyone?” he said. “Or is the Jewish state exempt from that because of its past?”

Engaging with a New Generation

Some Holocaust museums have developed plans for how to handle questions related to the Israel-Hamas war.

If visitors raise the question of genocide, Rabbi Prass said, he and other museum speakers have developed a clear response: While the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is tragic, “The term genocide? We don’t feel this is an appropriate use of the term, given the topic we talk about. It doesn’t apply.”

Some museums point visitors to the text of the United Nations Genocide Convention, which does not define the term merely as the killing of civilians from a particular national, ethnic or religious group. It requires that the killings were committed with “intent to destroy” the group.

The Illinois Holocaust Museum — founded by Holocaust survivors in Skokie, outside Chicago — prepared an eight-page guide on the Israel-Hamas war to help volunteers answer questions. The document states that Hamas was the “aggressor”; that international legal scholars have not found the war to meet the criteria for genocide; that there is “nothing antisemitic” about supporting Palestinian statehood, but there is in supporting Hamas or in chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine must be free.”

“It’s natural that when people are processing what they’re seeing in the world, to ask questions about Israel and Gaza,” said Bernard Cherkasov, the museum’s chief executive.

He added, “The hostages not being released and the innocent Palestinians paying the ultimate price — that is a humanitarian crisis that needs to be acknowledged, no matter what labels we put on it.”

Andrew Hollinger, a spokesman for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, declined a request for an interview about how the museum was responding to the war and the claim of a genocide in Gaza. In a written statement, he said that “the museum’s primary role is educating the public about how and why the Holocaust happened, and the longstanding unchecked antisemitism that made it possible.”

Ruth Wisse, a scholar of Jewish literature and politics at Harvard, said Holocaust museums should respond to the moment by teaching students more about contemporary antisemitism, including on the left and in the Muslim world.

And museums should celebrate Israel, she said, and present its founding in 1948 at the “middle point” of their historical narrative, instead of at its culmination. This would allow the museums, she said, to depict Jewish self-determination, for the first time in two millenniums, as a potent contrast to the victimization of the Holocaust.

“If they do it that way, you would have kids who would understand the story of Israel,” she said. “They would understand its miraculous nature.”

Debating a Genocide’s Legacy

Since the Israel-Hamas war began, antisemitic images have sometimes crept into antiwar protest imagery. For instance, the star of David in the Israeli flag has sometimes been replaced by a swastika, and some pro-Palestinian activists have shared images that recall classic antisemitic propaganda , like the portrayal of the Jew as a hidden and manipulative puppet master.

And more students have mentioned antisemitic tropes they have heard, like claims that the media are controlled by Jews, according to Mallory Bubar, an education consultant for Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage.

In response, the museum published a guide to antisemitism for educators. It explains some basic facts about Jewish history — for example, that for centuries, governments limited the types of jobs Jews were allowed to do, helping to explain their prevalence as moneylenders. The guide sketches how antisemitism often takes the form of conspiracy theories about Jewish power.

But the guide, and many of the museums, do not address a question that has been fraught for decades, and has been central to the U.S. political debate over the war: At what point does anti-Israel protest veer into antisemitism? It has been a matter of fierce debate among Jews, especially between generations.

For instance, there is a divide over the phrase “never again,” long associated with remembering the Holocaust. The Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center in Cincinnati has used the phrase “never again is now” to highlight the horror of Oct. 7 and what the museum has characterized as global indifference to Jewish suffering.

Jackie Congedo, a spokeswoman for the museum, suggested in an interview that accusing Israel of genocide could itself be an antisemitic act. “It feels to me a lot like what has happened to Jews throughout history — the vilification and jumping to frame Jews as the worst possible thing in every given society,” she said.

But some Jewish pro-Palestinian groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow have used the same slogan — “never again is now” — to call attention to Palestinian suffering and push for a cease-fire, while referring to Israel’s conduct as genocidal.

Simone Zimmerman, 33, a founder of IfNotNow, recalled that on a visit years ago to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, stories of anti-Jewish laws and segregation reminded her of elements of the Palestinian experience.

“It’s unsurprising they are asking questions about parallels,” Ms. Zimmerman said of today’s young visitors to Holocaust museums. “The reason we make comparisons is not to say everything is exactly the same, but to learn from history.”

At the Illinois Holocaust Museum, Marion Deichmann, a 91-year Holocaust survivor, periodically shares her story with middle school students. As a girl, she journeyed with her mother from their native Germany to Luxembourg, and then France. Her mother was arrested in the 1942 Vél d’Hiv roundup of Jews in France and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was killed.

Ms. Deichmann has thought about how she would respond if a student compared the present war to the Holocaust.

“There is no comparison,” she would say, “with the six million Jews that were murdered in camps.”

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

Two of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right partners threatened to bring down his government  should Israel agree to a cease-fire deal that would end the war in Gaza without eliminating Hamas.

Netanyahu has been put on the spot by President Biden’s announcement  outlining a proposal for a truce. Now the Israeli leader faces a stark choice .

Israel defied ominous warnings from Egypt and took control of a buffer zone on the Egypt-Gaza border. But the reaction from Cairo has been muted .

A Debate at Holocaust Museums: The Israel-Hamas war has also forced Holocaust museums to confront one of the most emotional and divisive issues within the Jewish community: how to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict .

In the West Bank: Since the war in Gaza began, armed Jewish settlers in the Israeli-occupied territory, often accompanied by the army, have stepped up seizures of land long used by Palestinians .

A Fateful Encounter: In an Israeli prison infirmary, a Jewish dentist came to the aid of a desperately ill Hamas inmate. Years later, the prisoner became a mastermind of the Oct. 7 attack .

Getting Relatives Out: For Americans racing to evacuate their family members from Gaza, the closure of the Rafah border crossing into Egypt — the only way out for civilians — has thrown an already complicated system into disarray .
