4 Day Non-Resident Temporary Permits

How to get a Texas trip permit:

• Purchase a $50 cashier's check or money order payable to: The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts
• On the face of the cashier's check or money order write: "Trip Permit"
• License plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle entering Texas
• The date that the vehicle will enter Texas
• The receipt from the cashier's check or money order should also be marked as "trip permit" and it needs to identify the motor vehicle by license plate number or the vehicle identification number and list the date the vehicle will enter Texas.
• The receipt from the cashier's check or money order is the trip permit and must be in the vehicle for which the tax payment is made.

Mail the cashier's check or money order to:

A trip permit is valid for only one entry into Texas and for only 20 days from the date of entry.

Note: A round trip through Texas constitutes two separate entries, even if the round trip is completed within 20 days. For example: a trip originating in Arkansas, traveling through Texas to New Mexico, and then the return trip to Arkansas would require the purchase of two Texas trip permits.

I'm buying a car in california from a private party and driving it back to the east coast. Maryland unfortunately requires a signed title before they will issue a temp registration of any kind. Cali requires plates to stay in cali since it's an out of state transaction. I think the one trip permit is my only avenue, but can't find much information on it online. what? Here all we need is the dated bill of sale and that gives you 7 days to drive. Of course you need insurance but no special permit. Are you sure that's not the case in the states you are looking at?

Might be worth calling the California DMV? Vehicle registration is a VERY state dependent thing. Whatever you do, try to avoid paying CA sales tax, as it's a good bit higher than MD.

heh, i was on hold with them for 2 hours yesterday before I gave up. I'm pretty sure the one trip permit is what I need, It's just unclear what documents, if any, are required to get one, and if I can get one same-day.  

Valid, signed title, bill of sale, proof of insurance. You should be able to walk into the DMV office, wait 3-4 hours, (wait time may vary...or make an appointment well in advance) get your trip permit.  

Dunno. In CA plates always go with the car. I don't care what happened to them once the guy drove the car away.

I sold a car from Cali to a guy in Mass - he drove it back, plates go with the car. I would not be too worried so long as you have your insurance, copy of the title sign off/transfer, registration. And why drive the 3K miles? Have it shipped.

One day trip permit from CA to OR? Sales tax question

So simple question really, I signed on a new car in CA. They can ship the car up and I won’t pay sales tax. But I’m reading conflicting info regarding sales tax if I do a one day trip permit out of the California state to my DMV office (which is a no sales tax state). Some said you just drive it out and pay reg fees and local state tax when you get to your state, other posts I’ve seen said you pay then and there (aka agree to sales tax on your payment for remainder of lease)? I have family in CA, so I figured this would make for a good trip down to visit, pick up the car on the way back and drive straight into Oregon same day as pickup. This is a BMW dealer and the car is a new lease and the lease would be registered at an Oregon address.

You’d pay sales tax on any amount up front and then when you register in Oregon, the use tax should be updated for the new registration address. You won’t be paying use tax for the entire life of the lease.

California registration for that drive off is going to be the painful part here if you can’t make it work on a one day trip permit.

So I would pay sales tax on the DAS ($1400), get the one day permit, drive up, register and then back to normal payments?

The cap cost reduction and any taxable incentives. More reason to do a $0 DAS deal.

You’d have to verify the registration questions, but from a tax situation, once you register it in OR, the CA use tax should drop off.

Ahh, I see. I’ll try to work in the 0 DAS and have my payment go up a bit (with sales tax) and then register here ASAP.

Is Loyalty taxable incentives? I have a current BMW and I checked and saw 3000+750 on the applied incentives on the paperwork.

For a total of $500 rather than paying $800-$1000 for shipping. I’m only driving the car back because I am doing some business in CA so while I’m there, figured why not pick up the car on the way back.

I just wanted to know if I have to be “stuck” with paying sales tax on payments but it seems it’s only temporary until I register in Oregon?

Does the dealership have one-trip CA permits (402-T) to sell you? Are they handling the OR tag and title work too?

The dealer told me, you deal with reg on your own, we can give you a day pass basically to take the car out of state.

A google search to find your local registration office’s website would give you the answer you seek.

A trip permit is for a vehicle that is not registered, you do not need a license plate. You do need to show proof of insurance to be issued the permit.

It is California

Would this be the same for California?

Check with the California Motor vehicle dept. and you will get the correct answer.

So it looks like you can use a one trip permit on an unregistered vehicle. Which is what I was trying to do at the DMV. The lady told me that I couldn’t get one without registration or a license plate. I specifically mentioned “one trip permit”. She told me that once I get registration then it will be free, but what is the point then?? I don’t understand this, is she confused or playing games?

Call the DMV BACK and ask questions until it’s clear to you. What’s so difficult. We don’t have your answers the DMV does.

And a different employee at the DMV may have a different answer.

He would still have a better chance of the correct answer from a live DMV employee that he can actually talk to, than a random forum poster that sometimes will take days just to get the wrong answer.

What with the legal-language etc, DMV’s seem to go out of their way to make stuff like this confusing.

When I first moved to Calif from another state I had to turn in my prior state’s license plates and get new Calif plates. The lady at the DMV counter showed me the two types I had to choose from. One was blue lettering on a white background, and the other was yellow lettering on a blue background.

DMV lady: Which one do you want? Me: The yellow and blue. DMV lady: Confused look on her face. DMV lady after 15 seconds of considering what I had just said: Oh, do you mean the gold and blue?

Best to know the answer to the question before going to the DMV so as not to get the run-around from an underpaid clerk. Several times I have had to wait for a supervisor to clear things up.

I’ve had this kind of discussion at the DMV a couple of times, and the solution is to print out and carry with you your title to the car, your ID, a copy of the complete section 4003 and also section 9258 (which sets the fee) and offer them to the worker to explain your request. If they persist ask to have the request reviewed by a supervisor. Keep smiling, apologize for making their day difficult but don’t just walk away and NEVER, ever lose your temper or show anger.

You’d think since the DMV staff likely handles this kind of request on a daily basis all you’d have to do is show up with the title, driver’s license, prior registration receipts as applicable, & proof of insurance and they’d tell you your options. Apparently not that simple.

OP: This will likely be easier if you make a DMV appointment first. I wonder if this could be done by mail?

Mail ? Like in the United States Postal Service ? You can’t be serious . That can be done over the web or even by a toll free phone number .

How would you show the DMV your title over the phone?

The same way you would present your proof of insurance. Many people have no experience with the DMV and are in the dark.

Today I had a vehicle in for a failed battery, 30,000-mile service and emissions test (expired registration). The service writer informed the owner that she would need to drive the vehicle 80 to 100 miles after replacing the battery to complete the emission monitors.

The owner stated that driving that far with expired registration was unreasonable. I replied that normally the owner would obtain a temporary movement permit to drive the vehicle for emission testing. The owner was told by a DMV clerk that the vehicle must first pass the emission test and be registered before a temporary permit could be issued, that is absurd.

Before this discussion with the service writer I had driven the vehicle and completed the emission test, I would not send a customer though this type of meat grinder.

Seems that more people who are unfamiliar with the vehicle registration process reply than those who are.

Topic: California Moving/One trip permits

I recently found out about the non operational one day moving permit and the one trip permits offered by the DMV.  Does this mean I can legally drive my normalish looking car on the road for one day say down to Seaside and back?

Does anyone have any experience with these?  My car is a little loud but not bad at 2-3k rpm

I've never tried it with a *race* car.  It's basically a 1 day registration for your car but don't consider it to be a 1 day "Queen for a day" pass that lets you drive your 935 to the market.  You will still get ticketed for anything not legal.  Also, it's not free.  You will need to pay all the registration fees that are due to date.  I suppose you can try to sweet talk the DMV girl to letting you pay partial fees but they are going to want some portion of them.  That's the deal killer on our car as it has been out of registration for a few years now so that 1 day pass would probably cost a grand.

They have a free one that you do not have to pay back registration.  Your car has to be planned non-operational.

I'd do it. Why not tell the CHP you are getting it weighed? That seems to be allowed. Just print out the vehicle code and keep it handy.

Yesterday, I managed to convince the DMV to give me plates for the "I choose you, Subaru" Legacy. We'll try to be there too.

Even if your car looks like a total wreck, as long as it has horn, wipers, signals and lights Iv'e used those 1-day permits quite often. I even had one lass at the DMV leave the date section blank for me to fill out when I was ready.

Got a lot of mileage out of that one.

This permit cannot be issued if: •Fees are due. •The registration for a vehicle subject to PNO requirements has expired and a PNO is not on file.

This is the part that kills us.  Yes the permit is free but the PO (and us) never bothered with a non-op and the registration is now several years out.  That's one of the reasons why we got the car cheap enough to Lemonize it.  My only hope is to keep working on my car dealer buddy to let me use his dealer plate.

For some reason we didn't have to pay any back registration on our car. It had sat for 25 years and the last registration was in 1985.

We put lights and horn and stuff back on, got it insured, and drove it to the Coucourse last year and we'll be coming to Seaside again this year.

I forget if its 5 or 10 years before a vin drops out of the system.  For some reason if the car/bike was ever a theft recovery, or salvage it stays in longer.  I assume that is to keep someone from storing a bunch of wrecked cars for 5 years and selling them as like new.

"New Registrations" are the same as "Date of First Operation" are the same as "date of last operation" in their eyes.

10 years is when they drop out of the system but I think certain types of inquiries can restart the clock.  A car not registered since 1985 won't show in the CA DMV system so there would be no back registration/penalties due.
