Now that the majority of countries are open again, many travelers are thinking it’s time to jump back on board. If you’ve never taken a cruise but are interested in traveling by ship, you may be wondering, “Do you need a passport to go on a cruise to the Bahamas?” 

The answer to this question depends on a number of things. Let’s take a look at whether you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise, what other types of documentation you can use and how it differs when you’re flying versus cruising.

Cruising to the Bahamas

For those who are unfamiliar with cruising or the Caribbean, the Bahamas is a frequent destination for these behemoth ships. This nation of islands is conveniently located just off the coast of Florida, near Miami, which makes it an easy destination no matter the length of your cruise. 

For this reason, you’ll see plenty of cruises taking off from Florida, stopping off in the Bahamas, then looping back and docking in the United States.

Do you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise?

So, do you need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas? In most cases, U.S. citizens won’t need one. This is because the majority of cruises that you’ll find taking off from the U.S. and heading down to the Bahamas operate on a closed loop. Closed-loop cruises are those that take off from a U.S. port, visit at least one foreign port of call and then return to that same port.

There is an exception to the closed-loop rule: If your ship will be docking in a foreign country that requires a passport to enter, you will need to carry one on board. In order to find out if you’ll need a passport for any of your destination countries, check with your cruise company.

Even if you are on a closed-loop cruise, though, you will still need to bring identification documentation in lieu of a passport.

What you need for a Bahamas cruise

If you’re sailing on a Bahamas cruise that’s closed loop and isn’t visiting any countries that require a passport, you don’t necessarily need to bring one with you — there are a few different identification options available to you.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, you’ll still need to provide some proof of U.S. citizenship. This can take the form of an Enhanced Driver’s License , a passport or a government-issued birth certificate. Additionally, you’ll need to bring a government-issued ID with your photo, name and date of birth. 

It’s important to note that this documentation is only valid for reentry to the United States through a sea or land border crossing — it won’t work for air travel.

If you’re bringing a birth certificate for proof of citizenship, it must be issued by the Vital Records Department of the state in which you were born. A hospital certificate of birth or baptismal papers don’t qualify. 

For non-U.S. citizens

If you’re not a U.S. citizen, do you need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas? Lawful permanent residents will be able to reenter the U.S. with a valid green card, but they will likely require a passport (and maybe even a visa) to visit any ports of call — including those which do not require passports of U.S. citizens. 

Other non-U.S. citizens will require a passport or documentation specific to the status they’re seeking when entering the U.S., though there are some exceptions for those traveling to the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program.

Be aware that these requirements only dictate reentry into the United States. You’ll want to research entry regulations for your destination country or countries before you leave to ensure you have proper documentation on hand.

Cruising versus flying

It’s important to understand the information provided above is limited to either land or sea border crossings. This means that if you’re heading to the Bahamas by air, you’re going to need to bring your passport to reenter the U.S. 

If you have a passport, you may want to consider bringing it with you on your cruise even if it’s not required. Here’s why: Say you accidentally miss boarding the ship after your land excursion and need to take a flight back to Miami. In this case, your closed-loop cruise will have been interrupted and you’ll need your passport to get back into the United States.

Don’t have a passport and still want to fly somewhere special? Consider heading to a United States territory, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa or Guam.

When you need a passport for a cruise

Cruising further from the u.s..

There are occasions when you’ll need to bring your passport for a cruise. If you’re cruising outside of the U.S. — such as a jaunt through the Mediterranean — you’ll need to have your passport with you. 

Certain repositioning cruises

You’ll also need a passport for cruises that begin and end in different ports, even if they’re both in the United States. 

A good example of this is a repositioning cruise from Miami to San Diego. During different seasons, cruises will often sail one-way routes from one port to another in order to reposition their ships.

If you board in Miami, make a few ports of call, sail through the Panama Canal and end in San Diego, you’ll need to bring your passport.

In case of medical emergencies

In general, it is preferable to have a passport with you — especially in the event you need emergency medical care and have to stay in a foreign country, for example.

Purchasing cruise travel insurance can also mitigate the risks of travel emergencies.

Other closed-loop cruises

What is required to travel to The Bahamas?

Prior to your journey, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with our Bahamas entry requirements for a seamless travel experience. To ensure a smooth entry into the Bahamas by plane, a valid passport is mandatory for all visitors, and an immigration form and oral baggage declaration must be completed upon your arrival.

Do I need a visa to visit the Bahamas?

American passport holders can enter The Bahamas visa-free for stays of up to 8 months. For U.S. citizens, a valid U.S. Passport is essential for re-entry into the United States. The Bahamian Government may also ask for proof of a return airline ticket to demonstrate your intent to leave the country after your visit, and sufficient funds to support the duration of your stay in The Bahamas. It's important to note that voter registration or a certified birth certificate is no longer accepted as proof of U.S. citizenship. 

Everyone is required to complete and sign an immigration form upon arrival in The Bahamas, and they must retain a portion of the card until their departure. All individuals must also complete a written baggage declaration form. For those without a passport, please refer to www.travel.state.gov * for the latest information on the passport application procedure. 

Canadian visitors will only need a visa if their stay extends beyond 8 months. However, they must have specific documents, including a Canadian passport valid for at least 3 months after departing The Bahamas (for direct travel) or at least 6 months if transiting through other countries like the U.S. Permanent Canadian residents will also need a Permanent Resident card and a return airline ticket to show proof of plans to leave the country after the duration of their stay.

What do I need to enter The Bahamas as a non-U.S. citizen living in the U.S.?

Non-U.S. citizens who are currently living in the U.S. have specific Bahamas entry requirements: 

For stays up to 30 days, they must bring an Alien Registration Card (Green Card) along with a valid national passport from their country of birth. For stays that exceed 30 days, they will need a valid national passport and a Bahamas Visa. 

Visiting The Bahamas from Latin America

When visiting The Bahamas, citizens from Latin America need to have a valid passport that covers their planned stay. For stays under 3 months, a Bahamas visa is not mandatory. However, if you are leaving The Bahamas to travel to a country that enforces a passport validity requirement of 6 months beyond your travel dates, you must adhere to that rule. Additionally, it’s essential to have a return or onward journey ticket, hotel confirmation (if applicable), and be prepared to provide proof of funds to support your trip if requested. 

Visiting the Bahamas from Other Countries

For entry into The Bahamas directly from or via the U.S., citizens from countries other than the U.S. and Canada must have a valid passport that remains current throughout their travel period. Additionally, some countries may require a Bahamas visa. If you leave The Bahamas for a country that mandates a passport validity of at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, that regulation will be upheld. You must also have a return or onward journey ticket and provide evidence of adequate funds to support your stay.

Does The Bahamas Require Proof of Vaccination?

Visitors are not required to take COVID-19 entry tests and most travelers do not need specific vaccinations prior to their arrival in The Bahamas. However, all travelers over the age of one arriving from countries where there is a risk of Yellow Fever transmission must present a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. These visitors must be vaccinated at least 10 days before entering The Bahamas.

Arriving by Boat

Entering The Bahamas on a private boat like a yacht, a fishing boat, or cruise ship requires that you provide the following documentation: 

• One copy of The Bahamas Customs Clearance Form 
• One Bahamas Immigration Card per person 
• Proof of Citizenship (passport) 

When you arrive in The Bahamas by boat, you will be asked to fill out an Immigration Arrival/Departure Card, which you will keep until you leave. You must go through Customs and Immigration at the nearest designated Port of Entry, show the yellow quarantine flag, and inform Customs about your arrival. Until your vessel is cleared, only the captain can disembark. Once cleared, passengers can embark on exciting excursions and explore the beauty of The Bahamas during their cruise stop. The Office of the Prime Minister wishes to advise that, effective Friday 6 August 2021, those persons applying for a travel health visa to enter The Bahamas or travel within The Bahamas will be subjected to the following new testing requirements:

Entering The Bahamas

Vaccinated Travelers

All fully vaccinated travelers wishing to enter The Bahamas will now be required to obtain a COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen Test or PCR), with a negative result, within five days of arrival in The Bahamas.

Unvaccinated Travelers

There are no changes to the testing requirements for unvaccinated persons wishing to enter The Bahamas.  All persons, who are 12 years and older and who are unvaccinated, will still be required to obtain a PCR test taken within five days of arrival in The Bahamas.

Children and Infants

All children, between the ages of 2 and 11, wishing to enter The Bahamas will now be required to obtain a COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen Test or PCR), with a negative result, within five days of arrival in The Bahamas.

All children, under the age of 2, are exempt from any testing requirements.

Cruise Passengers

All travelers, entering The Bahamas on a cruise ship, will be subjected to the testing requirements mandated by the cruise line and approved by the Competent Authority.

Traveling within The Bahamas

All fully vaccinated travelers wishing to travel within The Bahamas, will now be required to obtain a COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen Test or PCR), with a negative result, within five days of the travel date from the following islands: New Providence, Grand Bahama, Bimini, Exuma, Abaco and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbour Island.

For unvaccinated persons wishing to travel within The Bahamas, all persons, who are 12 years and older and who are unvaccinated, will still be required to obtain a PCR test taken within five days of the travel date. Exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to  crime . 

Country Summary : The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands. In Nassau, practice increased vigilance in the “Over the Hill” area (south of Shirley Street) where gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence.   

 Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications.  Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities. Commercial watercraft operators have discretion to operate their vessels regardless of weather forecasts; injuries and fatalities have occurred. Due to these safety concerns, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.   

Never swim alone, regardless of your age or level of swimming skills.  Keep within your fitness and swimming capabilities. Be mindful of sharks when swimming and engaging in water activities, as there have been recent fatal and non-fatal incidents involving sharks.  Be aware of weather and water conditions and heed local warnings.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the  Bahamas Immigration  website for the most current visa information. U.S. citizens are generally required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to The Bahamas, as well as proof of anticipated departure from The Bahamas. Those traveling to The Bahamas on a cruise may use another  Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative  (WHTI) compliant document, such as a U.S. passport card. However, we strongly recommend you obtain a passport before travel in case of an unforeseen emergency that requires you to disembark and return by air. U.S. travelers coming for tourism will not need a visa for travel up to 90 days. All other travelers will need a visa and/or work permit.

The Bahamas requires compliance with regulations to divert child abduction similar to  U.S. policies . Review those policies before traveling.

Safety and Security

Crime:  The Department of State rates the criminal threat level in New Providence Island (includes Nassau and Paradise Island) as critical. The vast majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) Islands. Criminal activity on the outlying Family Islands does occur, but to a much lesser degree than on New Providence or Grand Bahama. In Nassau, exercise caution in the “Over the Hill” area (south of Shirley Street). Violent crime such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults occur, but generally not in tourist areas. Adventure Tourism:  Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Reconsider going on the water in rough seas or inclement weather, as accidents and fatalities have occurred in such conditions. U.S. citizens seeking to engage in adventure tourism-related activities, including boat tours, are strongly encouraged to confirm the following with any tour operator:

Jet-Ski Operators:  Jet-ski operators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists. As a result, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.

Watersports Advisory: Carefully assess the potential risks of recreational water activities and consider your physical capabilities and skills. Be aware of sharks when in or on the water, as shark bites do occur and can result in serious injury or death. Never venture out alone, particularly at isolated beaches or far out to sea. Avoid entering the water above your waist if you have been drinking and always be mindful of jet ski and boat traffic in the area. Do not engage in water activities during times of inclement weather or rough seas. Commercial watercraft operators have discretion to operate their vessels regardless of weather forecasts; injuries and fatalities have occurred.

Hurricanes:  Hurricane season generally runs from June through November, although hurricanes can occur outside that period. Monitor local weather reports closely. Airports and seaports cease operations well before a predicted storm arrives, and seats on most commercial transportation may sell out far in advance. Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Drugs:    Marijuana and all products that contains its derivatives such as cannabidiol (CBD) and  tetrahydrocannabinol  (THC) -- to include gummies, oils and other edible products -- are NOT legal in The Bahamas.  Having a prescription or medical card for cannabis/marijuana does not exempt you from being prosecuted under Bahamian law, which makes no distinction between medical and recreational use of marijuana.

The possession or use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy, is a criminal offense in The Bahamas and can result in time in prison. While visiting The Bahamas, you are subject to Bahamian law.  Drug violators are regularly arrested, even for possession of small quantities . All persons 16 years of age or older in The Bahamas are tried as adults in court. If you are arrested for drug possession, you should expect to spend at least one night, and possibly longer, in custody. Stay away from drug traffickers, who may be often armed and violent. Do not accept packages from people you meet during your stay.

Firearms, Ammunition, and other weapons are not permitted in The Bahamas .  According to The Bahamas Firearms Act, individuals found to have a firearm or ammunition in their possession without a legally issued Bahamian gun license face a penalty of up to 10 years’ incarceration and $10,000 fine.  Declaring the weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into The Bahamas.

If you have a firearm or ammunition onboard a boat entering Bahamian waters, you must declare it with Bahamian Customs at the first point of entry.  Only declared shotguns and handguns are allowed in Bahamian waters.  You must provide the serial number, name of the manufacturer, and an exact count of ammunition.  Declared firearms cannot be removed from your boat and must be kept locked at all times.

If a U.S. citizen illegally brings a firearm or ammunition into The Bahamas, the U.S. Embassy will not be able to secure their release.  All foreign nationals are subject to Bahamian law and must follow local law enforcement procedures.  Please read more information on the Department of State’s page for Travelers With Firearms here .

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information. Medical care is available on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. However, serious illnesses or injuries might not be treatable locally. Serious health problems requiring hospitalization and/or medical evacuation to the United States can cost tens of thousands of dollars in up-front costs. Outer islands have only small clinics, and medical care is limited.

Ambulance service is available on the major islands, but traffic congestion on New Providence Island can cause delays.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Road Conditions and Safety: Driving in The Bahamas is on the left-hand side of the road. Traffic congestion in Nassau is severe, and drivers frequently display aggressive or careless tendencies. Accidents involving pedestrians on New Providence Island are common. Drive defensively and be alert to cars pulling out from side streets. Local practice is to allow this on an individual basis. It is not uncommon to see poorly maintained or excessively loaded vehicles on roadways. Rural roads can be narrow, winding, and in poor condition. Road flooding occurs frequently in many areas, including Nassau and Freeport, during and after rainstorms. Be alert for unmarked or poorly marked construction zones.

Traffic Laws: Seatbelts are required for drivers and passengers in The Bahamas. Wearing helmets on a scooters and motorbikes is also compulsory.

Public Transportation: Public transportation is available by minibus (known as jitneys) and taxi. Jitneys stop frequently and often without warning at undesignated stops. Taxi fares are based on zones and surcharges can apply for additional passengers and luggage. It is important to agree on a fare prior to departing for the destination.

Entry Requirements - Bahamas Immigration

All visitors must have a return or onward ticket, and a valid travel document (such as a passport and visa) to allow entry into another country as applicable.  Visitors may also be asked to produce evidence of sufficient funds to allow them to be self-sustaining whilst in the Bahamas.

Visitors may remain in the Bahamas for a maximum period of 8 months, provided that (s)he can support himself/herself or indicate other means of support for this period.  Please note that the maximum period of stay, documented in visitors’ passports, may vary, as this is dependent upon the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry.  Should you desire to extend your visit, permission must be sought from the Department of Immigration; more details on this are available here .  Visitors are not allowed to engage in any form of gainful occupation (work) while in the Bahamas.

Passports are required by all persons entering The Bahamas.

All persons entering The Bahamas require a Bahamian visa except the following persons:

• Alien residents of the United States who, upon arrival, are in possession of United States Alien Registration Cards for visits not exceeding thirty (30) days.
• Landed immigrants, in possession of Canadian Immigration Record Form 1000 may enter without a visa for visits not exceeding 30 days.  These persons should have a national passport.

Travel Documents Required for a Bahamas Cruise

If you will be cruising to the Bahamas on a Paradise Cruiseline , you must ensure that you have the proper travel documents so that you will be able to get on and off of the ship at each port. Below is a detailed explanation of what you will require.

Travel Documents Required For Overnight Stays

If you have selected one of the Bahamas vacation cruise and stay options, where you will spend 2-nights on the ship—and additional days in a beachfront resort in the Bahamas , then you will be required to have a passport for your cruise.

Travel Documents Required For Cruise-Only

Sometimes the best price cruises, are the 2-night 3 day cruises that port at the Bahamas allowing you a full day of excursions off of the ship. For this cruise, a passport is an adequate form of identification, but is not the only acceptable form of identification for US citizens. US citizens can use a government issued birth certificate,  and  a government issued ID—such as a driver’s license or state ID card. The birth certificate must have a raised seal, and may not be a photocopy. Green cards are an acceptable form of ID for resident aliens, along with a government issued photo ID. Those traveling from other countries are required to have a passport. Keep in mind, that a passport is always the fastest and easiest form of ID when going through customs.

Other Important Travel Document Information

Once you have gathered your travel documents, there are a few other factors you should keep in mind:

• It takes an average of 4 to 6 weeks to process a passport, so plan your trip accordingly. You can pay extra to expedite your passport for delivery in approximately 3 weeks.
• All passports and government ID cards must be current and/or have not expired.
• All children 16 years or older are required to have travel documents, but it is not a bad idea to have ID for younger children as well.
• If you are traveling with minors who you are not the legal guardian of, it is wise to travel with a letter of permission from their parent or legal guardian.
• It is a good idea to keep photocopies of all travel documents in the safe of your cabin or hotel room, or to keep electronic copies that you can access in case of emergency, loss, or theft.

The last thing you want is to book your Bahama cruise, and be left scrambling for the required travel documents. To make cruising and all forms of international travel easier, keep a current passport at all times.

Violent crime occurs and is often related to gang activity.

Violent incidents include:

• armed robbery
• home invasion
• sexual assault

The most common crimes committed against travellers in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, and Nassau are:

• armed robberies
• sexual assaults

Robberies also occur in cruise ship terminals and in and around popular resort areas, even in daylight hours. Crime increases during the holidays.

During your trip:

• stay in tourist areas
• always remain vigilant 
• avoid walking alone at night 
• don’t carry large sums of cash or valuables 

Women’s safety

Sexual assault occurs frequently in The Bahamas, particularly near hotels, in hotel rooms, in casinos, on cruise ships and on the beach. Reported incidents are on the rise in Nassau, including on Paradise Island. In some cases, the victim was drugged.

• Be wary when embarking on jet-ski rides with licensed or unlicensed operators, as several incidents of sexual assault have been reported
• Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and avoid using drugs
• Don't accept rides from strangers or from unlicensed taxi drivers

Advice for women travellers

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs in The Bahamas, especially in Nassau. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

• pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
• use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
• avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
• cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
• check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Water activities

The water sports rental industry is poorly regulated in The Bahamas. Tourists have been seriously injured using jet skis and other watercraft.

• Rent water sports equipment from reputable, locally registered operators only
• Insist on proper training before using the equipment
• Ensure that beach and aquatic equipment is safe and in good condition
• Ensure that helmets and life jackets are available

Water safety abroad

Boaters should be alert to the possibility of encountering water craft operated by illegal drug traders.

Remain vigilant and make use of officially recognized docking and berthing facilities only.

Road safety

Roads are generally adequate in major cities, but in poor condition in rural areas. Road construction is not always well marked.

Bicycles, mopeds and pedestrians can be hazards, particularly on the busy streets of Freeport and Nassau. Drinking and driving is prevalent. Accidents causing fatalities are common.

• Keep your car doors locked and your windows rolled up
• Never get out of your car to remove items blocking the road, as this could be a ploy by armed assailants to rob you
• Keep valuables out of sight in your parked vehicle

Public transportation

After dusk, avoid travelling on local buses on routes outside of the main tourist areas.

Taxis don’t use meters.

• Only use licensed taxis
• Never share a taxi with strangers

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary. 

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

• There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. 

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. 

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife. 

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

• In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
• Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
• The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
• Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
• Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country. 

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

• Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
• Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). 

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Medical care is good in Freeport and Nassau, but limited elsewhere.

You may need to make a deposit for medical treatment, even if you have travel insurance. If you do not have travel insurance, clinics may require payment upfront or credit card information as a guarantee of payment prior to providing medical care.

Response times to emergency calls may be slow.

If you require specialized care or sustain a serious injury, you may be evacuated to another island for treatment.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

If you take prescription medication, you’re responsible for determining their legality in The Bahamas.

• Bring sufficient quantities of your medication with you
• Always keep your medication in the original container
• Pack your medication in your carry-on luggage

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and the Bahamas.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the Bahamas, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Bahamian court.

If you are in this situation:

• act as quickly as you can
• contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in the Bahamas to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Long-line fishing

Long-line fishing is illegal in Bahamian waters. All long-line fishing gear must be stowed below deck while transiting Bahamian waters. Stiff penalties are imposed for catching crawfish, lobster or other marine life in protected areas or out of season.

You can drive in The Bahamas with your valid Canadian driver’s licence up to 90 days. If you intend to stay longer in the country, you must obtain a Bahamian driver’s licence.

Entry requirements

COVID-19 rules 

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering The Bahamas. 

Passport validity requirements 

To enter The Bahamas, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave. 

Visa requirements 

You can usually stay in The Bahamas for up to 30 days without a visa. You can get extensions up to a maximum of 8 months . Penalties for overstaying include a fine, detention and deportation. The Bahamas High Commission lists more information about visas . 

If you arrive in The Bahamas from the USA, and you have an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) , the time you spend in The Bahamas counts towards the 90 days you have on your ESTA. If you are in any doubt about your US visa status, ask the US Immigration and Naturalization Service or any US diplomatic mission before starting your return journey. 

Vaccination requirements  

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do

T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit. 

Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) . 

Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?

Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.

The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe. 

What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?

The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.

Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau. 

Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas

There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.

Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area. 

There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray. 

Transportation 

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.

Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.

There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.

Tips to save time and money on summer travel: Fly, drive and cruise for less

As travelers get ready to hit the road, take to the skies and head out on the high seas this summer, experts have some simple tips that could help you save both time and money.

Cost-effective tips for air travel this summer

Brian Kelly, founder of The Points Guy, shared the team's newly released annual report of the best airlines with "Good Morning America," which sums up the most reliable U.S. airlines striking a balance between reliability, cost, experience and value.

This year, Kelly said "Delta came in at No. 1 for the sixth year in a row," noting the airline "didn't win in any one of the four major categories, but they're strong consistently across the board."

"In reliability, I want to give a shoutout to Allegiant Air, which is a smaller, low-cost air carrier -- they did not bump a single passenger in 2023," he said. "Getting where you need to go is a big part of air travel, so kudos to them."

With most major carriers increasing baggage fees across the board, Kelly applauded Southwest Airlines, which he said "still allows two checked bags free."

Domestic deals to save on summer travel

The average airfare has dropped again, according to the latest inflation data from May, which means that it's actually 6% cheaper to fly now than this time last year.

Katy Nastro, travel expert and Going.com spokesperson, told "GMA" that airfare is now 19% cheaper than June of 2022, when airfare was at its highest price points. She said it's also cheaper than February 2020, when air travel was still "normal."

To take advantage of the three-month streak of cheaper prices, travelers can look for deals both at home and abroad.

"There's a lot of great domestic fares," Kelly said. "We're seeing New York to San Francisco for $197 round trip."

He also noted that now is a great time to visit wine country in Northern California.

Additionally, he pointed to deals on airfare to and from cruise port locations. "New York to Miami $87 round trip -- that's a great jumping off spot for cruises," he said.

The Points Guy team has also tracked fares from Los Angeles to Charleston for under $200.

"Charleston is a great food city, but there's also beautiful beaches in that part of the country that you shouldn't overlook," he said.

The Transportation Security Administration recently reported its second busiest day in history, with nearly 3 million people screened across the country.

Even with record travel numbers, Kelly said there have yet to be any "major meltdowns" at airports or specific airlines, but sadly said it's a different story when it comes to getting to the airport.

"Our roads can't handle the crowds -- I highly recommend people leave early for the airport," Kelly said. "Traffic is an issue. So if you're a procrastinator like me, don't be, and head to the airport a little earlier this summer."

Check in early for flights to earn access to upgrades

As soon as the check in window opens within 24 hours of a flight, experts encourage using the airline's app to seamlessly check in and avoid any issues, especially if you're checking bags, because with some fee policy changes, it could cost you more by making that choice in person the day of your flight.

Plus, checking in early also offers more possibility, depending on your loyalty status, to receive any upgrades.

Avoid lost luggage with 'baggage hygiene'

The ramp director at Newark Liberty International Airport told ABC News to make sure you remove old bag tag stickers from previous flights that could potentially send your baggage to another airport.

The ramp director also suggested removing any ribbons, which is a common way to identify baggage, because it could obstruct the printed locator tag.

Get through security with ease by separating certain items

Whether it's a quick weekend getaway or you've become a carry-on packing pro in order to avoid paying for checked luggage, there's another simple step to take before getting to the security checkpoint that can hopefully speed things along.

Every airport is built differently and requirements for what to put in a bin whether you're in the Clear, TSA pre-check, or standard security line seemingly vary at an array of locations when it comes to what needs to be taken out or off like liquids and shoes.

Put items that are known to be problematic at security, such as batteries, candles, baby wipes, food or other items that may obstruct the X-Ray from getting a clear read, into their own designated removable pouch or section of your carry-on so that it can be easily removed and rescanned a lot faster.

Summer of cruises with deals at hot destinations

There are still some great deals at sea to capitalize on later this summer, with some as low as $50 a night in August, according to ABC News chief business correspondent Rebecca Jarvis .

"A four-night Key West and Bahamas cruise starting at $242 a person. A four-night short Caribbean cruise for $251 a person. And a four-night Bahamas cruise for $209 a person," she shared. "Really, the bottom line here is the more flexible you can be and the more all-inclusive you book, the better deal you're going to get."

Road trip and hit the road for less with lower gas prices

Jarvis said Americans can road trip for less than it would have cost this time last year with gas prices at $3.46 on average nationwide.

"That's down about $0.13 a gallon from where we were last year," she said, adding that "AAA is forecasting that a number of states are going to see their states dip below $3 a gallon in the coming weeks."

First look at new Disney Cruise Line Bahamas destination Lookout Cay

The sustainable-minded design merges with vibrant local Bahamian artistry.

Disney Cruise Line has debuted its brand new island port of call in the Bahamas with the opening of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Earlier this week, Mickey and Minnie Mouse welcomed the first guests with their version of Junkanoo, the country's annual festival of unity, for the inaugural voyage.

The one-of-a-kind tropical retreat and second island destination for the cruise line immerses guests in the spirit and culture of the Bahamas with signature Disney entertainment and adventures.

Lookout Cay, a 900-acre retreat located on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, was designed by Walt Disney Imagineers, who worked with local artists to reflect the essence of local traditions. It is full of nature trails, a water play area and beautiful beaches for families and adults.

"The goal for our team is to celebrate the Bahamas and the beauty of the island of Eleuthera," said Kevin Thomas, Walt Disney Imagineering creative director. "Rather than creating a fictional story here at Disney Lookout Cay, we are offering Guests an opportunity to relax, enjoy and experience the magnificent landscape and culture that abounds through the islands via expressions of art, music and storytelling."

The island destination is filled with dramatic structures designed to resemble vibrant, oversized seashells scattered along the coastline.

Bright, Bahamian-inspired colors and art greets guests at venues including the dining pavilions, bars and the Goombay Cultural Center, which is the focal point of Disney Lookout Cay.

"I am proud to have played a part in bringing this vision to life and believe that Disney's commitment to promoting cultural understanding and appreciation will leave a lasting impact on all who visit Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point," notable Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts said in a statement.
