Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ amp; The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle by Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen had been playing acoustic guitar, in the tradition of early Bob Dylan style folk, for more than half a decade before his management signed a record deal with Columbia Records in June 1972. When planning began for the debut album, Springsteen had advocated for a band arrangement but the label’s A&R man John Hammond wanted a more solo-dominated album, reflecting the live sound. Eventually a compromise was reached where the album would consist of five “band” recordings and five solo recordings. However, when then-CBS President Clive Davis listened to the ten tracks he commented that not he strongly preferred the band tracks, and also felt that the album lacked a potential hit single. Springsteen composed two more commercial-sounding songs (“Blinded By the Light” and “Spirit In the Night”) and reached out to saxophonist Clarence Clemons of a rival North Jersey band to add a new element to these new songs. Three Springsteen solo tracks were omitted from Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ bringing the total track count to nine, seven band and two solo tracks. Despite this effort to further “commercialize” the album is was a major flop sales-wise upon its release. According to a local Freehold, NJ record store owner, the Partridge Family far outsold the hometown Springsteen during the very first week that the album was released and it wouldn’t be until years later when Springsteen became nationally famous that anyone would even hear of this album.

Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band in 1973

Recording sessions for The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle took place exactly a year later, during the summer of 1973. On every level (critically, commercially, and sonically), this sophomore album is superior to the debut, although together they form a fine evolution in advancement. Still, initial sales were still slow and, like its predecessor, this album would not get widespread listens until after the huge breakthrough of Springsteen’s third album, Born to Run . Expanding on the basic approach of his debut album, The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle offers multi-strains of other musical styles, and is much more a “band” effort, with keyboard player David Sancious (whose home on the E Street gave the album and group its name) stepping in to play a major role in musical arrangements. Lyrically, this may have been Springsteen’s nod of nostalgia and final goodbye to the small-town street life as he was moving on to higher ground. It was also a signature album for drummer Vini Lopez , who offered a busy Keith Moon style approach for his final album with the that was lacking in later E Street material.

Springsteen’s debut album started with a song written intentionally to provide it with a radio-friendly hit. “Blinded by the Light” contains a barrage of words above a loose, almost lost musical jam. The song is almost all verse until it finally reaches the distant breaks of the chorus hook. Session piano man Harold Wheeler joins in on piano along with Clemons, Lopez, and Springsteen playing the remainder of instruments. Like the album, the single didn’t make many waves upon release, but three years later a re-arranged version of the song was recorded by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and it reached #1 in both the US and Canada, ironically becoming the highest charting song of all that Springsteen wrote through his long career.

Greetings from Asbury Park NJ by Bruce Springsteen

The debut album ends strong with three upbeat songs which forecast the approach expanded upon on the second album. “For You” is upbeat and romantic, driven by the bouncy organ by Sancious and the heartfelt melodies of Springsteen. “Spirit in the Night” is a fun and adventurous song with the the strongest early presence by Clemons, who provides saxophone, hand claps, and backing vocals on this track. The closer, “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City” is the most Dylan-esque of all songs on this album with a nice mixture of acoustic guitar and piano providing a fine bedding to the frantic, poetic lyrics in a very entertaining way, making for a great way to end the album.

The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle by Bruce Springsteen

“4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” continues the Jersey shore scenery promised in the debut’s title. Romantic lyrics line this mostly pleasant and enjoyable song with the slight exception of the over-exaggerated “breath-y” vocals by Springsteen in the opening verses. Beyond that, Springsteen’s acoustic and electric guitar mixes are excellent with some accordion added by future E Street Band member Danny Federici . “Kitty’s Back” is an extended, multi-part song which opens with a slow moving bluesy guitar lead which abruptly morphs to a more upbeat, jazzy verse with boogie bass by Tallent and some great horns. Later, there is a wild, almost psychedelic jam section in the middle which includes a great organ solo by Sancious.

“Wild Billy’s Circus Story” is a cool song which really strikes a chord to end the first side. It evolved from a previous song called “Circus Town”, which was recorded for the Greetings album but never released. Flipping the original LP over, is the side two opener “Incident on 57th Street”. A distorted piano kicks off this absolutely brilliant song, perhaps the most polished and melodic song on the album. Lyrically, “Incident” tells a romantic story set against a New York street fight, in the spirit of “West Side Story”, with fully developed characters and setting, something Springsteen would revisit often in the future.

Speaking of characters, one of Springsteen’s most enduring is “Rosalita”, a song which elaborately tells of a love forbidden because the girl’s parents don’t approve of the boy’s rock and roll lifestyle. Although never released as a single, it was Springsteen’s first song to receive significant airplay, especially on FM radio as anticipation grew for the release of Born to Run two years later. This was in spite of its over seven-minute running length. The song also received a second popular life during the 1980s when a vintage video of the song became one of the most played videos on MTV . The ten-minute “New York City Serenade” completes the album with a bit of subtle melodrama but nice use of instrumentation, especially the acoustic guitar. The song never gets lost or mundane over its extended length.

By the end of 1973 and the release of Springsteen’s second album, critics were starting to take note of his approach of absurdist energy and heart-on-sleeve pretension, and would soon be crawling over each other the sing his praises. Much of this praise was well-deserved but some was down-right overblown. Still, the was little doubt that Springsteen was just getting started and would be around for years to come.

Watch Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Roar Back to Life Three Weeks After Tour Postponement

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band roared back to life Wednesday night at Madrid, Spain’s Metropolitano Stadium, three weeks after they were forced to postpone shows so Springsteen could recover from vocal strain.

“Hola Madrid!” Springsteen said upon taking the stage. “Estáis preparados?” The spirited crowd was indeed ready for a 30-song, two-and-a-half hour set that included the first live rendition of the High Hopes deep cut “Frankie Fell in Love” since 2015 and a cover of John Fogerty’s 1975 classic “Rockin’ All Over the World,” which they hadn’t touched since 2016. They also broke out rarities “Seeds” and “If I Was the Priest.”

Snoop dogg earns his olympic stripes with 200-meter sprint, another maga republican is accused of misrepresenting military service, is a missouri grandma behind the graceland scam.

They also spoke about the full band sessions for Nebraska , which were ultimately shelved in favor of Springsteen’s stark, solo renditions of the songs. “I remember recording all of that [ Nebraska ] material and it was very much in the E Street Band style and very similar to what we do now when we play those songs, and it was great,” Weinberg said. “And it was a rock record … [Springsteen’s manager-producer] Jon Landau, during the writing of [ Nebraska ], suggested that I listen to John Wesley Harding , the Bob Dylan record. And he said, Bruce seems to be going more in this kind of direction. And there were some takes like that, with brushes, just a bare minimum rhythmic approach. And there were also rock versions of [some of] the Nebraska material.”

The E Street Band’s world tour resumes Friday night back at Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. They head back to the America in mid-August, and play sporadic shows until wrapping up the year in Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 22. The four European shows they were forced to postpone due to Springsteen’s vocal issues have been rebooked for the summer of 2025.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Are Playing on the Beach in Asbury Park. Here's How It Happened

A headlining set from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the beach in their spiritual home of Asbury Park, N.J., sounds more like a fannish fever dream than an actual festival booking. But that performance is actually happening Sept. 15, on the second night of the sixth annual Sea.Hear.Now festival. The festival, which has already had names as big as Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters headline (and which will welcome Noah Kahan to headline the night before Springsteen), was founded in 2018 by famed photographer and Jersey native Danny Clinch with his longtime friend Tim Donnelly and HM Wollman, in a partnership with promoter C3 Presents. It also features a surfing competition and pop-up performances at Clinch's Transparent Clinch Gallery near the beach.  Clinch, who moonlights as the harmonica player in the Tangiers Blues Band, got on the phone with Rolling Stone to explain how Springsteen and the E Street Band jumped on board for the already sold-out festival, share some predictions, and more.

Given the location, this is the biggest possible thing you could do. Was it even a glimmer of possibility in your mind at the very beginning?

No, definitely not. But what we hoped would happen, and it actually did, was we knew we would have bands that Bruce loves, like Social Distortion, because we love those bands. Our hope was always that he would come and sit in.

I work with Bruce a lot, so we see each other fairly often. We text occasionally and stuff. And so I told him, we have this festival with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Social Distortion, and it's gonna be great. This was our first year, 2018. I said, "You should come through," and he was like, "Yeah, that sounds cool." And I waited a couple months and reminded him again. Then day one, Ben Harper comes on the stage, and it's absolutely beautiful. The sun is setting, the moon is rising on the other side, it's just packed with people. And he plays "Atlantic City." I'm like, "Oh my god."

So I get out my phone, I film it, and I texted it to Bruce. He says, "What's going on? And I was like, "This is Sea.Hear.Now, this is happening on the beach right now." And he was like, "Oh man, amazing." Of course I said, "Tomorrow, Social Distortion is playing on the beach in Asbury." About an hour goes by, and he texts me and says, "Can I get the tour manager's info for Mike Ness?" The next day, he shows up and sits in with Social Distortion. And it really was a kind gesture, because once he sets foot on that stage, it became an international story for Sea.Hear.Now, and he had such a great time.

How did he end up on this year's line-up?

So this time around, we were looking for our headliners, and he was going to be on the East Coast, and his tour was going to end on the 13th of September. So we're like, "Oh man, this looks like a good opportunity to hit him up." And I happen to be over his place. And I said, "Man, I was looking at your schedule, and we would love to have you at our Sea.Hear.Now show," and he's like, "Yeah, that'd be cool." And I said, "Can I have my guy reach out to your guy?" He just was laughing, and he said yeah.  Then later I was back in the studio, and he just turned to me at one point and he was like, "I'm gonna do the thing on the beach. I'm going to Sea.Hear.Now. I want to bring the band on the beach. This could be incredible."

I guess there were some complaints about overcrowding last year.

I think when you have a band like the Foo Fighters, more people are gonna stay the day. We didn't sell any more tickets than we did for any other year. Everybody wants to be up front, but in the last quarter of the beach, people were spreading out blankets.

Covid was very difficult for everyone in the live-music business, obviously, but for a festival that was just getting started, that must have been pretty extra frustrating.

Yeah, it was. We were lucky we only lost one year, right? Because we were in September, we were able to do Pearl Jam on the beach [in 2021]. They hadn't played in three years, and they were stoked to play and to be in Asbury Park.

Right before Bruce on Sunday night, you've got Trey Anastasio and the Gaslight Anthem. Bruce is close with Brian Fallon from Gaslight, and has played with Phish before. I assume you're hoping some kind of collaboration might take place.

Yeah, I mean, it's happened before. It is kind of a family block party in a sense right now, because Trey is from Princeton. Trey texted me and was so overjoyed, and he told me his first concert ever was [Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band] in 1978 at the Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton. He was 14 years old, and I think his sister brought them to the show. He's just like, "You gotta be kidding me. This is amazing." And you know, Gaslight into Bruce - it's insane. It's a New Jersey dream right there.

What was your greatest Bruce in Asbury moment up until now?

I would have to say my favorite moment for myself was the [annual benefit concert] Light of Day [in January 2020]. Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers were headlining, and Joe and I have become really good friends. He says to me, "You coming through tonight?" I was like, "Yeah," and he was like, "you should bring your harp." So I show up and I go backstage and he's got his whole setlist there, and he had four Houserockers songs, and then it was Bruce [songs] for the rest of the show. And he's finding a song for me to play on, and he points to the Bruce section. I was like, "Oh, God, all right." So he says, "Let's do ‘Murder Inc.,' and we're gonna do it in E," or whatever it was. I'm like, "Oh, geez."

I go out in the back, listening to a live version of "Murder Inc." and trying to find out where I'm gonna fit in with it. Then during the show, they waved me over. And they go, "We're doing ‘Pink Cadillac' in G." I was like, "OK!" I had the right harmonica, thank God. And as I'm walking out, I hear Bruce addressing the crowd, and I didn't really catch what he was saying until I listened to the bootleg later: "I'll bring out our friend Danny Clinch. He's a fantastic photographer, but I can't vouch for his harmonica playing." [Laughs.] Thank God, I didn't hear that.

So anyway, they start the band, and Bruce gives me the nod. I basically say to myself, well, I'm either going to pee my pants or I'm gonna just lean into this thing and play my ass off. So I just leaned into it. And we did a nine-minute version of "Pink Cadillac," and he threw me a bunch of solos and he was just having the time of his life. It was just way too funny.

If you had a dream song for Trey to come on with Bruce, what would it be?

Trey wants to bring his big band to Asbury Park, with a whole horn section and a percussionist. And I know that Trey loves "Kitty's Back."

As it happens, that's my pick as well.

So let's put that out in the universe.

The Queen music catalog , along with a number of other rights, is in the process of being acquired by Sony Music for £1 billion (around $1.27 billion), two sources confirm to Variety . The news was first reported by Hits ; according to their report, the only revenue not covered in the deal is for live performances, which founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, who still actively tour with singer Adam Lambert, will retain.

One other player was said to be very close in the bidding, but stopped short at $900 million.

The catalog, which has been in play for several years and inching toward Sony for the past few months, is complicated by the group’s recorded-music rights for the U.S. and Canada, which were acquired by Disney, for an undisclosed price, at some point in the 2000s after an initial $10 million licensing deal that was struck in 1991. Those rights will remain with Disney in perpetuity, although certain of the bandmembers’ remaining royalties from them will go to Sony once the deal closes. Similarly, the group’s distribution deal, which is currently with Universal, will go to Sony in all territories outside the U.S. and Canada when it expires in 2026 or 2027.

Queen originally formed in London in 1970 by May and Taylor — who previously played together in a group called Smile — joined by Freddie Mercury on vocals and piano and, the following year, John Deacon on bass. Multiple record labels initially passed on the group before a deal was struck with EMI. That label released Queen’s self-titled first album in 1973, which included the May-penned hit “Keep Yourself Alive,” and all of the studio albums that followed (with the exception of the Disney released in the U.S. and Canada).

While the group scored U.K. hits over the next couple of years with the singles “Seven Seas of Rhye” and “Killer Queen,” their global breakthrough came in 1975 with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a Mercury-penned mini-symphony that has become of the longest and most unusual hit singles of all time.

The group soon became one of the biggest in the world, with each member penning a No. 1 single over the following decade: Along with Mercury’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” there was May’s “We Will Rock You” in 1977, Deacon’s “Another One Bites the Dust” in 1980 and Taylor’s “Radio Ga Ga” in 1984. Although they never quite dominated the U.S. on the scale of other territories, the group played stadiums all over the world and for several years held the all-time attendance record for a single concert when their 1985 performance at the Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil drew an estimated 600,000 people. Tragically, Mercury contracted the AIDS virus and died of complications from the disease in 1991.

Queen’s legacy has not only endured but grown over the years, with its songs still receiving extensive airplay on the radio and at sporting events — “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” are stadium staples — as May and Taylor, now in their mid-seventies, continue to tour under the group’s name.
