The climate is typically tropical with temperature ranging from a cool 22°C (72°F) in the evenings to a sultry 34°C (93°F) in the daytime.

Sarawak receives an abundance of rainfall (averaging 200-250 cm a year); the rainy season is normally during the 'landas', a local term for the monsoon rains that come between November and February each year. Sabah is less wet than Sarawak and because it lies just below the typhoon belt, it is often known as "the land below the wind".

The monsoon period should not deter visitors to the region as it is not cold; in fact the rains during this time may be heavy but it is intermittent and they bring respite from the tropical heat. This is also the time of the year when the local tropical fruits unique to the region are in abundance.

LGBTQIA+ Guidance

When planning to travel as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, there may be additional things you wish to consider doing, such as:

  • Checking the Human Dignity Trust map of countries that criminalise LGBTQIA+ people, which highlights potentially dangerous regions and countries
  • Checking the ‘Local laws and customs’ section of your country's official foreign travel advice page
  • Looking for any updates for your desired destination on the Human Rights Watch LGBTQIA+ rights page
  • Buying a recommended guidebook, as many include an LGBTQIA+ section and advice for LGBTQIA+ travellers

USEFUL INFORMATION

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Malaysia though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is prevalent in parts of Borneo, therefore we strongly suggest that you visit your GP to discuss your personal requirements. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Borneo, Malaysia is a multicultural but predominantly Islamic country. You should respect local traditions, customs and religions. Shoulders and legs should be covered when visiting temples and other important religious sites.

Ladies should dress modestly in the towns and cities, this means avoid wearing shorts and tank tops. When you’re outside of the towns and cities you can wear normal summer clothes. If your trip includes spending time at hotels resorts the dress code is more relaxed.    Men can wear normal summer clothes all the time.

As you can imagine the humidity is very high here, so be prepared. When you’re exploring national parks, light weight natural fabrics work best and pack long trousers and long sleeved shirts to help keep the bugs away.

Language & Religion

The official language is  Malay  although English is also widely spoken and understood. Mandarin and Tamil are the other two main languages, alongside a multitude of other less widely spoken languages representing smaller ethnic groups.

More than half of the population (52%) follows Islam. Other religions followed in Malaysia are Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Sikhism. In addition, Shamanism is practiced in East Malaysia.

Time

Borneo is 8 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

In Borneo forget potatoes – rice (nasa) and noodles (mee) rule in this region. Rice is either steamed or fried, and noodles can be made from wheat, wheat and egg, rice or mung beans, and are used in a bewildering number of dishes either fried or boiled. Malays like their fish fried (ikan) whole and stuffed with spices or chopped into chunks or steaks and served with a spicy (tamarind) sauce. In Malaysian Borneo in particular, hinava (raw fish marinated with lime juice and herbs) is very popular.

Apart from fish, chicken (ayam) is possibly the most consumed meat in the region. Beef (daging lembu) and mutton (daging kambing, which also refers to lamb as well as kid and goat) are common in Malay dishes too. Chilli of course, features heavily. Fruit is usually the desert, served raw and presented on platters while alcohol is readily available all over.

Kinabatangan River Borneo: guide to a bucket list jungle experience

Kinabatangan River bucket list jungle experience in Borneo with kids

Beams of a rising sun shining through the morning fog over the Kinabatangan River, the magical silence interrupted by the calls of monkeys and flapping wings of hornbills flying over. We’re sitting in a small boat, cruising down the Kinabatangan River deep in the jungle of Borneo. Despite the early hour, we’re intently observing the river banks to spot wildlife.

Table of Contents

It’s difficult to capture this experience in words… It was magical and moved us deeply, we’ll never forget it! Definitely one of the highlights of our Malaysian travels .

In this guide, we’ll give you all the information you need to experience and plan this multiple-day and night Kinabatangan River cruise and jungle adventure yourself . How to do this on a budget , where to sleep, how to get there and so much more!

This guide is useful to anyone traveling out there. But as we were there with two small kids of 6 and 7 years old, we’ll also show you this amazing experience deep in the jungle of Borneo, is perfectly doable with young children !

How to get to the Kinabatangan River

The Kinabatangan River is situated in Sabah , the northern province of Malaysian Borneo .

Although it isn’t really difficult to reach Kinabatangan, there is no direct public transport to Sukau or Bilit, which are the two main villages next to the Kinabatangan River where you can stay to do these cruises. You’ll have to pass one of the hubs nearby, which are Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Sepilok, or Semporna .

A lot of the hotels or resorts offering the 2D/1N or 3D/2N jungle and river experiences will include a private pickup from either Sandakan, the Sukau junction, or the Sepilok junction . Read more below to get the details. If you’re out of options, you can always contact Mr Choy , a local from Sukau who arranges private transport. His number is easy to find on Google and we’ve heard very good reviews.

First of all, you need to fly to Borneo . It is very cheap to fly from Kuala Lumpur to either Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan with Air Asia .

It depends on the rest of your Borneo itinerary which one you should choose. Sandakan is closer to Kinabatangan, but we flew to Kota Kinabalu because we wanted to spend some time there as well.

From Kota Kinabalu to Kinabatangan

There are two ways to get from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabatangan

This is the   cheapest option . From Kota Kinabalu, busses leave to either Sandakan or Semporna.

If you take the bus to Semporna, get off at the Sukau junction. If you take the bus to Sandakan, you can either stay on the bus till Sandakan or ask them to drop you off at the Sepilok junction.

Whichever option you take, ask your accommodation to pick you up there. Or try to find a van at the junctions and ask them to bring you to your destination.

borneo jungle river island tours

The bus ride takes long (about 6 hours) and passes Mount Kinabalu which is the interesting part. After that, you get hours of palm tree plantations. It’s such a shame to see how much jungle has disappeared. But because we wanted to visit the orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok,  we decided to take the bus to Sandakan anyway, even with two young kids.

You could go straight from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabatangan, but it will be a very long day that way. Staying overnight in Sandakan or Sepilok could be a better option.

We highly recommend choosing Sepilok! You’ll get a more authentic jungle experience and nicer accommodation. We spent the night in the Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat . It was basic, but we had a lovely stay right in the jungle and they arranged our transport to the Sepilok center.

Compare accommodations in Sepilok here.

If you choose to stay in Sandakan anyway, try to book accommodation near the beach. We’ve heard it’s not safe everywhere, but this area is okay.

By plane and bus

Flying by plane from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan is by far the quickest option to reach the Kinabatangan River. It will be a bit more expensive than by bus, but still very affordable with Air Asia. Not as good for the environment on the other hand. Ask your hotel or resort to pick you up in Sandakan, if possible even on the same day.

Check out cheap tickets from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu here.

If not, take the bus from Sandakan to Semporna or Lahad Datu and again, ask them to drop you off at the Sukau junction. Ask your accommodation to pick you up there or try to find a van at the junctions and ask them to bring you to your destination.

If you want to visit  Sepilok before heading over to Kinabatangan, take the bus to Kota Kinabalu and ask them to drop you off at the Sepilok junction.

From Sandakan or Sepilok to Kinabatangan

First, check if your accommodation can arrange a transfer from Sandakan or Sepilok. The resort where we booked our 3D/2N stay at Kinabatangan, picked us up in our accommodation in Sepilok. Very handy, especially with kids.

If that’s not possible, from Sandakan, take the bus to Semporna or Lahad Datu and get off at the Sukau Junction. From Sepilok, wave at the bus to Lahad Datu or Semporna that is passing by at the Sepilok Junction.

Taking Grab is possible, but it will cost you a lot. Drivers often will charge double because they need to drive back with an empty car.

From Semporna to Kinabatangan

In Semporna, take the bus to Kota Kinabalu and get off at the Sukau junction. From there, take one of the vans waiting to drive you to Sukau or Bilit, or wait for your hotel/resort pickup.

The best time to visit the Kinabatangan River

Travel to Sabah is possible all year round, but the  best time to visit Borneo is from March until September . Also for diving, with clearest views from April to June. If you love photography, you better choose to travel to Borneo during the dry season.

Starting from October, your chances of heavy rainfall increase significantly, and traveling in Borneo from November to February means you are right in the middle of the rainy season. It’s possible but we wouldn’t recommend it, especially with kids.

Kinabatangan River on a budget

If you start to search the internet to plan a Kinabatangan River Cruise, it appears as if the only way to experience this, is to book one of the many tour packages , often organized from Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan. They are  very expensive !

However, it is perfectly possible to plan everything yourself and it will be much cheaper !

Read more: Best travel planning resources and inspiration

We love to travel with our kids on a budget so we arranged everything without an agency and got an amazing, all-included , 3-day Borneo jungle experience for RM 1490 ($350/€330) for the whole family. We paid around $130/€120 for an adult and $65/€60 for a child, including all jungle treks and river cruises, accommodation, and food.

You could even just book a room and arrange the river cruises or jungle treks when you’re there. Most homestays charge about RM50 per person for one river cruise.

How to arrange your own Kinabatangan experience?

First, contact one of the resorts or homestays we discuss below and book your tour directly with them. Ask them if they can pick you up in Sandakan, Sepilok, or where the bus drops you.

Next, take the bus from Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Sepilok, or Semporna as we explained above, instead of flying or grabbing a private taxi. Await your pickup, call Mr Choy, or walk over to your resort. And that’s it!

Kinabatangan River with kids

We often get the question if Borneo and the Kinabatangan River are suitable for children. First of all, yes! Take your kids over there! The whole family will love it!

We absolutely believe you can travel to Borneo with kids of all ages ! There are many activities, villages, cities, and cultural experiences that are great for even the smallest kids.

However, we’re not sure if babies or toddlers are ready for wildlife spotting . For example, in Bako National Park or at the Kinabatangan River, during one of the jungle treks or river cruises, you have to be silent. The guides listen to the sounds of the jungle to spot the wildlife. And as all parents know, it can be hard sometimes to get babies and toddlers quiet…

Our girls were 6 and 7 when we did this jungle experience! They loved it! It’s one of the things they still talk about. They made many drawings afterward of the wildlife they saw on the river banks. The whole experience left a deep positive impression on them and certainly sparked their love for wildlife and the rainforest !

Where to stay at Kinabatangan River – Accommodations

Almost all of the homestays and resorts offer their own river cruises and jungle treks. Most people choose the 3D/2N or 2D/1N packages , but you can also just book a room and arrange your own jungle experiences à la carte .

We did a 3D/2N package. which we can highly recommend if you have the time (especially with kids). It will take you a while to get here and if you only stay one night, you might feel rushed. The place is amazing and so relaxing, take your time to enjoy it! That way you’ll have the most chance to spot the ‘big five’ of Borneo.

There are two villages next to the Kinabatangan River where you can find resorts and homestays, Sukau and Bilit . We stayed in Bilit, but Sukau is the most famous one.

Homestays are often basic, so don’t expect luxurious facilities. There are some more expensive resorts around if you would like some more luxury. And Sukau is mostly Muslim, so you’re not allowed to drink in the homestays.

Our kids by our bungalow at our Kinabatangan River Resort

Below we list some popular homestays that have great reviews. And the one we stayed in, of course!

Accommodations in Sukau

Sukau RB Lodge:  Probably one of the cheapest homestays around, which is also reflected in the accommodation. It is clean but old and very basic. However, if basic is okay for you, this is your place.

Sukau Riverside Homestay:  You stay with the most friendly family who will make your time here unforgettable with their delicious meals and excellent river cruises. Accommodation is basic but clean.

Osman’s Homestay:  Another homestay that gets great reviews and offers affordable packages or rooms and à la carte jungle experiences.

Sukau Backpackers B&B:  This homestay also offers very affordable clean rooms and has great package prices.

Sukau Greenview:  One of the most popular homestays that offer very affordable 3D/2N or 2D/1N packages. Their rooms are a bit more comfortable than the budget options.

Sukau Rainforest Lodge:  A National Geographic award-winning eco-lodge. They offer comfort and amazing experiences, but all sustainable and eco-friendly.

Accommodations in Bilit

Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort:  this is the resort we stayed in. Their rooms are very comfortable and clean and they have amazing package deals. We paid RM 530 for an adult and RM 215 for a child. This included all meals, 4 river cruises, 2 night walks, and 1 jungle trek. We loved our stay by the river and our kids even got the opportunity to plant two fig trees. Locals are trying to recover the rainforest after the deforestation by the palm oil industry.

Kinabatangan Nature Lodge:  They offer great value for money. They have both dorms and private rooms.

Wildlife Spotting at the Kinabatangan River

The borneo big five.

A lot of people who come to Borneo, want to see the Borneo big 5 !

  • Pygmy Elephant
  • Proboscis Monkey
  • Salt Water Crocodile
  • Hornbill (8 types of hornbills live here in total)

Spotting an orangutan is the reason people come to Kinabatangan River in Borneo

Chances are very high you’ll see proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and hornbills. To spot the small pygmy elephants and orangutans you need to get lucky, with the elephants being the hardest one.

These elephants roam the flanks of the river, looking for food. The guides usually know if they are anywhere around. If so, the main focus of your river cruises will be to find them. While doing that, you’ll see countless other animals.

On our first river cruise, we already saw 4 of them. Unfortunately, the Pygmy elephants never revealed themselves to us. The guides said they hadn’t been around for a few weeks.

Saltwater Crocodile in the Kinabatangan River in Borneo

Plenty of wildlife around Kinabatangan

Besides the Big 5, there is so much more wildlife to observe around the Kinabatangan River. Unfortunately, due to the many palm oil plantations nearby, animals are forced to live around the river, which is why it’s so easy to spot them.

Remember there is never any guarantee of how many and which animals you’ll see. Although the guides are experts in wildlife spotting and know the jungle very well, these animals are free to go wherever they want (luckily!). But trust me, you’ll see enough!

  • Orangutan (if you get lucky)
  • Proboscis monkey (endangered but plenty around)
  • Long-tailed and short-tailed macaques (hundreds of them)
  • Leaf monkeys (less common, we saw the silver leaf monkey)
  • Borneo gibbon (you need to get lucky, but you might hear them)

Group of macaques seen during our wildlife spotting on the Kinabatangan River in Borneo

  • Kingfishers
  • Owls (during the night)

Kingfisher spotted during our afternoon cruise in Borneo

Reptiles and amphibians:

  • Saltwater crocodiles
  • Monitor Lizard
  • Frogs (mostly during the night)
  • Turtles (if you are lucky)

Monitor Lizard resting on a branch by the Kinabatangan River in Borneo

Countless insects

Other amazing animals if you are lucky:

  • Irrawaddy Dolphin (very rare)
  • Sun Bear (very rare)

What to do at Kinabatangan River

If you come over here, it’s because you want the ultimate jungle and wildlife spotting experience. You can book river cruises and jungle treks à la carte with your homestay, or you might have booked a 3D/2N or 2D/1N package with your homestay.

We booked the 3D/2N experience with our kids . Below you can find our program. Although this might seem like a lot, we were all so enthusiastic about spotting the wildlife we didn’t mind. You’re absolutely free to skip something if you’re too tired. We skipped the night walk on our second night to give our girls some more sleep.

Morning Sunrise River Cruise

Be ready for an early awakening , as your morning cruise leaves at 6 a.m. sharp! Despite the very early hour, these sunrise river cruises were our favorite.

The morning fog creates a mystical atmosphere and the sun is not visible yet. It is still rather cold (so wear a jacket) and the animals are very active before the heat of the day rolls in.

Morning cruise over the Kinabatangan River in Borneo during sunrise

The early morning is a perfect time to see crocs, as they try to catch one of the hundred birds or small monkeys sitting around the river. We saw some huge adult saltwater crocodiles and a few babies lying on the mud of the river banks.

Once the sun starts to rise and you get deeper into the jungle, you’ll see more and more monkeys wake up giving you an amazing show! We spotted macaques, proboscis monkeys (who are endangered but are commonly seen here), and even some leaf monkeys.

Day Trek Jungle Experience

After having breakfast and resting a bit, it’s time to discover the surrounding jungle. It’s amazing how the local guides spot the wildlife! They’re definitely experts!

However, I have to be honest, we saw some, but not a lot of wildlife during our walk. Mainly because the jungle directly surrounding our homestay has been severely reduced due to the palm oil industry. Locals are trying hard to recover that. Our girls even planted two new trees near our homestay.

Exploring the rainforest in Borneo with kids during our day jungle walk

Nevertheless, a walk through the rainforest is never boring ! Our local guide, who lived here all his life, told us many interesting stories about surviving in the jungle and special trees, plants, and insects. Which leaves to use as a medicine, which branch to transform into a weapon.

Afternoon Sunset River Cruise

The afternoon cruises are great for spotting monkeys . Once the heat of the day is over, they love to rest, play, and just sit around the Kinabatangan River banks.

We got very lucky and spotted orangutans immediately on our first sunset cruise and again the day after that. An entire family (mom, dad, and baby) were hanging out high in the treetops. We’ll never forget the experience of observing the ‘man of the jungle’, as orangutan means in the local language.

Orangutan spotted at Kinabatangan River in Borneo

Many birds hang around the river as well. We spotted hornbills flying over, a kingfisher sitting on a branch, and  lizards  and crocodiles resting in the sun.

Again, being on a boat in the middle of the Borneo jungle while the sun is setting is magical . After spotting many monkeys, birds, a lizard, some crocodiles, and a few others, all we could do was silently enjoy the sunset over the river while going back to our homestay.

Night Walk Jungle Experience

Make sure you don’t miss a night walk in the jungle of Borneo! Many species come out at night, some scarier than others. But no worries, your very knowledgeable guide will not only spot them for you but also reassure you there is nothing to be afraid of.

For our girls this was a very thrilling experience, walking with their flashlight through the jungle looking for wildlife. At night, the sounds of the jungle are everywhere. This is how exciting as it gets!

We saw many insects , frogs , a palm civet cat , heard the monkeys, and spotted lots of birds sleeping on branches.

Bird spotted during a night walk at the Kinabatangan Rainforest in Borneo

Environmental and ethical issues at Kinabatangan

Unfortunately, there is a reason why the Kinabatangan River is now such an amazing experience and one of the hot spots to see wildlife. The rainforest in this area has been severely reduced by the palm oil industry , forcing all the animals to live near the river which increases the chances of seeing them.

When we came by bus from Kota Kinabalu, we were devastated to see how much of the natural habitat of the wildlife had been destroyed . We saw palm plantations for hundreds of kilometers in a row.

If you come to this area, try to support the local communities and the environment . They have lost their land to the multinationals and are trying to earn an income out of tourism.

Book your stay with homestays , run by families who work with local people and fishermen. Besides the fact you provide them with an income, this choice is better for the environment as well. They use smaller boats and cook more local food.

A lot of local people understand how important the rainforest is for their existence and preserving wildlife. They try to buy back the land of the palm oil industry and make it into the forest again. When we were here, our girls also planted a fig tree each. Small steps, but every little help counts!

Our kids planted trees to recover the rainforest in Borneo

Here are some organizations you can support in their efforts to recover and preserve the rainforest, wildlife, and local communities.

  • Itochu Corporation : Group working together with WWF to restore the tropical rainforests and conserve Borneo’s ecosystem.
  • WWF – Heart of Borneo : An ambitious transboundary conservation initiative to preserve the heart of Borneo.
  • Save The Orangutan : Program to protect and recover the natural habitat of the orangutan
  • World Land Trust : buying land to make into forests again.
  • Borneo Nature Foundation : Saving the rainforest by habitat protection, canal blocking, fighting fires and reforestation.
  • Rainforest Trust : setting up crowdfunding to protect the rainforest and buy land.
  • The Borneo Project : brings international attention and support to community-led efforts to defend forests, sustainable livelihoods, and human rights.

Tips before you go

If you plan a Kinabatangan River experience, here are some useful tips to make the best out of your stay.

The reason you come here is to spot wildlife of course. But adjust your expectations. Don’t expect you’ll be able to check everything on your bucket list. These animals are wild, which means they don’t pop up every time you want them to. For example, we didn’t see the Pygmy Elephants. However, no need to worry! You’ll see plenty of wildlife!

The homestays and villages are remote. Bring cash before you come here! There aren’t any ATMs nearby. And most homestays or restaurants won’t accept paying by card.

Don’t forget to stock up on food and snacks as well. Although the local people provide excellent food in their homestays, you might want to bring some extra snacks, especially for kids. There aren’t any big supermarkets around and everything will be much more expensive.

You’ve come to the jungle to spot wildlife, experience the rainforest, and relax. There won’t be any good Wifi or 4G. Some homestays do have a connection, which will allow you to send a message or mail and maybe even upload a picture. But that’s about it. So put your phone, tablet, or computer aside and enjoy the environment!

What to bring for a Kinabatangan River Cruise

Besides the regular stuff, you would bring to any vacation in South-East Asia, here are some things we really advise you to take along when you come to the Kinabatangan River.

First of all, it rains a lot in the area! It’s called a rainforest for a reason. Which means the humidity can be very high (above 90%). Try to avoid cotton clothes, they absorb the humidity. In the morning and evening, it can be rather cold as well. So don’t forget the following essentials:

  • Rain jacket  for women , men , or kids . If you want to safe space, you could also choose a rain poncho .
  • Dry bag  as you’ll be in a boat a lot and might encounter rain. So bring a dry bag to protect your valuables such as your camera or phone.
  • Longsleeve or fleece for the afternoon for women , m en, or kids .

During your stay, you’ll need to do one or more jungle treks and  river cruises . Some homestays will provide boots but don’t count on it. It can get very hot as well during the day. So don’t forget the following essentials:

  • Good hiking shoes for women , men , or kids . Personally, we love the Merell shoes.
  • Hiking socks for women , men , or kids .
  • Strong sunscreen , we like Banana Boat Sunscreen a lot, also for our kids.
  • A hat for the sun  for women , men , or kids .
  • Mosquito repellent: we use OFF! which works amazing. It is not as harmful as some others (especially for kids) and is perfect for the tropics.
  • Leech socks: fortunately, we didn’t need them. And some homestays offer them to use. But it doesn’t hurt to bring your own leech socks.

Kid is wildlife spotting with a binocular in Borneo

You come here to spot wildlife . You’ll want to have a few essentials to truly enhance the experience and capture the animals.

  • Binoculars  for adults or kids . Our homestay offered their own binoculars, but the small and rather cheap one we brought was better. They don’t need to cost a lot to be great!
  • A good camera:  we love our compact and affordable Sony A6000 , but with the upgraded full-frame Sony A7R IV you will have all the options. Full-frame cameras offer a lot more options to take pictures in low-light situations.
  • Zoom lens:  the wildlife won’t pop up right next to your boat. If you’d love to capture it, make sure to bring a zoom lens . Anything above 200mm will be great! I even used my camera as a binocular too.
  • Flashlight:  during the night walks, you have to take a flashlight or headlamp .

Between the jungle experiences, you have some time to relax .

  • Flip flops  for women , men , and kids .
  • Yoga pants  for women , men , and kids .

And last but not least, don’t forget these other essentials.

  • First-Aid Kit:  we bring our first-aid kit everywhere. You can either make your own or buy a complete first-aid kit .
  • Water bottle, let’s reduce plastic!  We take our water bottles everywhere!

Amazing post! 🙂 Do you have the link for the Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort? I seem I can’t find them anywhere online. Only tour operators… Thanks! Best, Joao

Learn more about Borneo

Best time to visit borneo.

Borneo's climate is typical for a tropical region - generally hot and humid all year-round.

Temperatures are usually in the low 70F ° s for most of the year, dropping back to the high 60F ° s at night.

Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by sunshine. The 'wet season' runs from November through to February but it does rain throughout the year, although our itineraries are rarely affected.

The state of Sabah is known as the 'land below the wind' as it's below the monsoon belt.

Culture and customs

The cultures across Borneo can vary depending on what border you’re closest to – divided into Malaysian, Indonesia and Brunei regions.

Borneo’s population is largely made up of Malay with the predominant religion being Muslim. The remainder of Borneo’s population is Chinese, Indian or belong to indigenous populations.

You may hear the word ‘Dayak’ used by locals as a general term referring to the riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups in Borneo.

Historically, most indigenous communities in regional areas lived in longhouses, though many have moved for employment in urban areas. That being said, there is still a substantial number of Dayak tribes that maintain a strong spiritual tie to the rainforest and have retained their customs and speak local dialects.

Food and drink

Rice (nasi) and noodles (mee) are dietary staples across the island and accompany most meals. You’ll find varieties of white, red and brown rice grown throughout Borneo – prepared by steaming, frying, boiling into a breakfast porridge, or cooking with coconut milk in a hollowed bamboo stick to make lemang.

Must-try foods in Borneo

1. Sarawak laksa

This Malaysian-influenced staple is a spicy broth filled with vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, chicken slices, shrimp and coriander.

Skewers of meat (usually beef or chicken) are grilled to perfection over charcoal.

3. Roti canai

Fried roti bread that is crispy, fluffy and soft all at the same time. It might be served with savory or sweet fillings (from eggs and sardines to coconut jam and bananas), dipped into curry and lentil sauces, or enjoyed on its own.

4. Bamboo chicken

Chicken marinated in chilies, lemongrass, garlic and ginger is stuffed into a bamboo stick with rice, sealed with turmeric leaves and cooked over an open flame until all the flavors merge together.

Geography and environment

The South-East Asian island of Borneo sits just south of the South China Sea, with the Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, Makassar Strait, Java Sea and Karimata Strait also surrounding the island.

Split up between three countries (Brunei, Indonesia , Malaysia ), the regions most visited by tourists (Sabah and Sarawak) belong to Malaysia.

Home to the oldest rainforest in the world, large cave and river systems and mountains, Borneo has an incredible range of biodiversity with hundreds of species of birds, bats, plants, flowers and insects living in this ecologically precious part of the world.

Sitting 4,095 m above sea level, Sabah's Mount Kinabalu is the third highest mountain in South-East Asia and a popular trekking spot for active travelers looking for a challenge.

History and government

Early history.

Early on, Borneo was used as a port for trade, with the Chinese and Indians stopping in on the coast as a part of their trade route from 500 to 1300 AD. The Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and British were soon to follow. Because of this, Borneo now has a rich diversity of international influences to draw upon from these years of trade and interaction with other cultures.

With most of coastal Borneo falling under the rule of the Javanese Majapahit kingdom in the 14th century, the Sultanate of Brunei extended its rule in the north from the 15th to 17th century. By the 19th century, both the British and the Dutch had colonial interests in the area, with a dynasty led by James Brooke ruling Sarawak for many years. Brooke's interest in the area stemmed from his attempts at trade in the Far East and connections to the Sultanate of Brunei. Brooke's rule was fraught with controversy and battles with the Sea Dayak people, who interrupted trade and were labeled as pirates. James Brook was succeeded by his nephew, Charles, and then his son, Vyner, in this rule known as the 'White Rajahs' of Sarawak.

Recent history

Japan took control of Borneo during World War II, resulting in a high number of deaths for the local population. During the war, many British and Australian prisoners of war were sent to Borneo, with the most notorious spots being Sandakan where thousands of Allied soldiers perished due to disease, malnutrition and exhaustion.

By the conclusion of the war in 1945, Borneo was freed from the Japanese yet only two decades later, Borneo was the site of more conflict, this time between Indonesia and Malaysia. This conflict arose from the union of Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya in the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. More recently, the Sultanate of Brunei became an independent nation (in 1984).

Palm oil plantations have spread rapidly throughout Borneo in the last ten years, mainly due to the decline in the rubber industry. While these plantations have provided jobs and helped the economy in the short term, their proliferation has led to wide-scale deforestation, which surmounts to devastating habitat loss for many of Borneo's endangered species and displacement of indigenous people who rely on the forests and jungles to sustain their hunter-gatherer lifestyles.

Top 10 nature spots of Borneo

1. mount kinabalu.

Seeing sunrise from the top of Mount Kinabalu is a fine payoff for making it to the top. The climb, while strenuous, is filled with beautiful flora, interesting animals and beautiful vistas - making this majestic mountain a true natural highlight of Borneo.

2. Poring Hot Springs

Located within the Kinabalu National Park, these steaming hot pools of water provide a relaxing place to unwind after trekking Mount Kinabalu. Sliding into the open air baths is a therapeutic way to soothe your muscles - a nice outdoor reward for completing such a climb!

3. Bako National Park

The oldest national park in Sarawak may be small, but with isolated beaches, jungles, waterfalls, rock formations and walking trails, visitors will be delighted in the perfect panoramas to photograph and range of wildlife viewing opportunities on offer.

4. Turtle Island

Lying just north of Sandakan, Turtle Island Park is a haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Witnessing turtles landing onshore at dusk, or baby turtles hatching, is one of life's most unforgettable moments.

5. Kinabatangan

This district of Sabah is know for its incredible array of wildlife and diversity of habitat, with limestone caves, swamps, rivers, lakes, forests and mountains all contributing to the ecological diversity of the area. Home to such rare species as the Asian elephant, the proboscis monkey and the Sumatran rhinoceros, a visit to the jungle here will guarantee some wildlife viewing thrills.

Meeting the gentle orangutans of Sepilok is a must-do for visitors to Borneo. These orange-tinged creatures are captivating, entertaining and cheeky - and watching them play, eat and interact in the jungle of Sepilok is a privilege not to be missed.

7. Headhunters' Trail

Walking in the footsteps of one of the world's most mysterious, feared and intriguing people may not be for everyone, but walking along the famed Headhunter's Trail reveals a little bit of local history as well as many wondrous natural sights.

8. Mulu National Park

Visitors should overlook Mulu National Park at their own peril. Not visiting this World Heritage-listed area would mean missing out on canopy walks and treks that reveal exotic creatures, spectacular caves and stunning limestone karst formations.

9. Danum Valley

This area of pristine lowland rainforest is arguably one of Borneo's premier wildlife hot spots. Walk the trails and spot exotic birdlife, interesting plants, flying squirrels, vocal frogs and active gibbons.

10. Gaya Island

Get away from it all and revel in the seclusion of Gaya Island, located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. See tropical fish swimming through colorful reefs, learn to scuba dive, laze on the uncrowded beaches or grab a kayak and go exploring this slice of tropical beauty.

While Borneo's wild landscapes and beautiful beaches are definitely the true highlight of any visit, there are still treasures to found in Borneo's markets.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Borneo

1. Ikat weaving

This traditional weaving process results in colored, patterned textiles that can be used as clothing, wall hangings and home furnishings.

2. Wood carvings

Sarawak boasts a population of talented wood carvers -wooden bowls, charms, masks and figurines are all wonderful souvenir choices.

3. Ceramics

Sarawak also has a wide range of good-quality ceramics and pottery thanks to the local populations of Chinese and Iban tribal potters, each group possessing their own distinctive style.

Festival and events

Rainforest world music festival.

The diversity of world music is celebrated over three days each July in the heart of the Borneo jungle. Hoards of eager festival-goers flock to Kuching, Sarawak (in Malaysian Borneo) for daytime music workshops, cultural and craft displays and evening concerts by indigenous performers from all over the globe. And like every good festival, there are always plenty of food stalls serving up yummy Malaysian and Asian foods.

Borneo International Kite Festival

Each September, the seaside town of Bintulu shows us how cool kites can be. Kites of all shapes, colors and sizes fill the sky for stunning displays and kite flying competitions. Come and watch the others show off their skills, participate in a kite-making workshop or take in the cultural performances.

Gawai Dayak (Harvest Festival)

More than just a celebration of the rice harvest, Gawai Dayak is an important symbol of unity for the Dayak and is celebrated with gusto in cities and rural villages across Sarawak. Many longhouses open their doors to visitors, where they are treated to traditional costumes, ritual music and lots of locally brewed rice wine (tuak) and Dayak foods. Head to the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching for the liveliest celebrations, where parades and other festivities begin a week before the main event on May 31.

Borneo Cultural Festival

Hear, see and taste the best of Malay, Chinese and Dayak culture at this annual July festival. Lively music, traditional dances and other cultural performances take place on multiple stages over 10 days in the city of Sibu in Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo). Expect Dayak drums, Malay songs, Chinese dragon dances and lots of mouth-watering cultural eats.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Chinese New Year

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Adha

Islamic New Year

Prophet Muhammad's Birthday

Christmas Day

Since Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei all have claim to Borneo, different parts of the island celebrate different public holidays. The ones listed here are celebrated in all three nations. There are more public holidays in  Indonesia,   Malaysia  and  Brunei.

Borneo travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to visit Borneo?

Visas are your responsibility. Entry requirements can change anytime, so you must check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you visit for detailed and up-to-date visa information about your nationality. Is tipping customary in Borneo?

Tipping isn’t customary in Borneo, but leaving a small token of appreciation is always welcome if you feel the service has been particularly good.

Cell phone coverage is good in major cities, but there is little to no coverage in the mountains and in remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Borneo?

Squat toilets are common in Borneo, though some hotels and tourist areas have Western-style, flushable toilets. Carrying your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer is a good idea, as these are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Borneo?

Tap water is not considered safe to drink in Borneo. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, pack a reusable bottle that can be filled with filtered water. Your leader can tell you where to find filtered water or pack your own purification tablets.

You’ll find ATMs in Borneo’s large cities and urban areas, though they are less easy to find in rural and remote parts.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Borneo?

Is Borneo a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is highly advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers in Borneo. Homosexuality is illegal in both Malaysia and Brunei, where it can be punished with long prison sentences or even death. While homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, few people are openly out. Regardless of which part of Borneo you are visiting, discretion is strongly suggested.

What You'll Do

A fantastic trail with 80% off-road, single track. This trail takes you through a variety of exciting terrain including untouched tropical forest, winding ravines, a natural bamboo garden, and challenging downhills . Best of all, take on the challenge of many river crossings by riding across suspended bridges, or carrying your bike over bamboo and log bridges.

We pause to take a moment and open up our senses to the tropical jungle, listen for the call of tropical birds, observe the busy life of insects and small jungle animals . Discover the great variety of wild exotic plants such as pitcher plants, wild ginger, and wild tropical fruits.

After all the exertion through the jungle, take a cool dip in a gentle flowing river for a well-deserved break, before heading off for lunch in a century-old town to try out some exotic, local food!

Sepilok: Introduction to Borneo with Orangutans, Sun Bears, and Giant Flying Squirrels  (2 Nights/3 Days)

Sepilok is a perfect spot to launch your journey into the heart of Borneo. Staying the first night in Sepilok allows you to avoid starting and ending your trip in Kota Kinabalu: a perfect option for those who’d like to see as much as they can on a short vacation in Borneo. When time is short, every night counts!

Why Sepilok is a Perfect Starting Point to Your Borneo Itinerary?

Internal flight from Kota Kinabalu (where your international flight lands) to a nearby coastal city of Sandakan takes just 45 minutes, and from there it’s less than 30 minutes’ taxi drive to Sepilok. Easy and smooth start for your Borneo trip!

In Sepilok, you’ll get a perfect foretaste of Borneo – the orangutans, sun bears, and rainforest – in just one day! Get inspired and read our separate article: 11 Exciting Things To Do In Sepilok.

Choose a resort that is tucked away from it all and a room facing the rainforest and sleep away your jetlag. Wake up to the sounds of exotic birds and enjoy breakfast outdoors while spotting monkeys in the trees. Then head to the world-famous orangutan sanctuary to witness semi-wild red-furred cousins swinging to the feeding platforms for their lunch. Still not completely charged up? What about visiting orangutan nursery and watching babies wrestling and chasing each other?

Still, the highlight for us was visiting Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre , where you can watch the pint-sized bears climbing up the trees and minding their own businesses.

We also loved the nature walks in the rainforest, on the elevated platforms just behind our hotel. The additional perks included watching giant red flying squirrels glide upon us during the evenings.

How to Get to Sepilok, Malaysian Borneo

There are multiple daily flights between Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. One-way prices start at 13$ (AirAsia), so there’s absolutely no reason to take the road. That’s also a total bargain for the one most scenic aerial views: you’ll be flying past Mt. Kinabatangan and weather-permitting the peak is fully visible. Be sure to book left side seat from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan!

Taxi drive from Sepilok to Sandakan takes less than 30 minutes. It’s worthwhile to check if your hotel offers return transfers – ours did. I wouldn’t bother thinking about the bus. Local buses leave hourly from ‘Batu 14’, by the highway (Sepilok doesn’t have a center, so you’d need a taxi to Batu 14).

Sandakan: Soak in the Small City Charm  (1 Night/2 Days)

Spend a day in the authentic Bornean small-town vibes mingling with locals. Zigzag between the hawker and fruit stalls of Sandakan Central Market and stock on everything you’d possibly need from the nearby Harbour Mall, which alone would be a justifiable reason to spend a night in Sandakan before heading off the grid.

We enjoyed a great lunch at a quaint café, lovely rooftop drinks, and authentic Malay dinner at the waterfront with locals. Sandakan offered us a welcome city break before spending a week in the remote corners of Borneo!

Note: If you’re crafting one-week Borneo itinerary, you might need to skip Sandakan to maximize time in Kinabatangan River and other destinations. We loved our short stay in Sandakan, but I’d trade it with one night in Kinabatangan River, Sepilok, or Lankayan Island if I needed to.

How to Get to Sandakan, Malaysian Borneo

When traveling from Sepilok to Sandakan, use either a taxi or bus – or ask the transfer from your hotel, as specified above (check out the previous section, “How to Get to Sepilok”).

Lankayan Island: Paradise Island with World-Class Diving and Snorkeling (2 nights)

Welcome to paradise! Lankayan Island is straight out of the tropical daydream: a tiny jewel-shaped, coral-ringed island far off the coast and crowds, in the turquoise Sulu Sea. Imagine chalk-white sand beaches and a magical underwater world, which bewitches divers and snorkelers alike. Then add an exquisite luxury resort, with just 26 seafront chalets, all facing the endless, turquoise ocean. This uninhabited island offers ultimate seclusion – a perfect spot for romantic getaways. Just look at the pictures, the words are not enough.

The best thing is that you don’t need to be a diver to see rare creatures, like jawfish, explore colorful coral reefs, and swim with turtles or sharks. You can do it all in the shallow waters of the Lankayan jetty, even if you’ve never snorkeled before. We searched long and hard for the best place to snorkel in Borneo – and found it from Lankayan. Check out our separate article about the magical underwater world of Lankayan !

Getting to Lankayan Private boat transfer (included in the rates of Lankayan Island Dive Resort) leaves Sandakan at 10 AM and leaves Lankayan at 7 AM, so plan the rest of your Bornean itinerary accordingly. If you’re flying in Sandakan, note that your flight has to land before 9 AM.

Lankayan Island is an unspoilt paradise off the coast of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Sungai Kinabatangan River: Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys in the Wild (2 nights)

Kinabatangan River is the best bet to see wild orangutans in Borneo. Orangutan sightings could almost be guaranteed if you stay two nights in Kinabatangan area (our guides said that the likelihood is 70%). Proboscis monkeys are omnipresent and nearly impossible to miss: watching their plump bellies and funny noses will guarantee smiles at every encounter.

What we couldn’t believe was spotting a herd of endangered Borneo pygmy elephants during Kinabatangan cruise. There are only 1500 of these baby-faced forest elephants left in the world, as their population has dropped by 50% during the last three generations.

It’s incredibly hard to pick the highlight of our Kinabatangan adventure: every moment spent watching wild orangutans and proboscis monkeys felt sacred, and we were up in the clouds while trying to spot the massive gray ears and trunks of those pygmy elephants through reeds. All river cruises felt serene, although during one morning we didn’t spot any orangutans at all, but ended up enjoying jungle breakfast with cheeky macaques and wild pigs.

Kinabatangan River attracts loads of tourists, so pick your lodge wisely. I’d recommend spending at least one night upriver, far from the cluster of lodges in Sukau village, where riverboat traffic disrupts the jungle fantasies. We loved the privacy of the Abai area combined with one night in Sukau, where wildlife spotting was excellent. Get more inspiration for your trip from our separate article on Kinabatangan River!

One word of warning for Kinabatangan River: there is a devastating reason for the massive numbers of orangutans and other wildlife. The palm oil industry has left only a narrow corridor of the jungle for animals to move around. As splendid as it feels to visit Kinabatangan, it isn’t a real, untouched wilderness – and that’s the perfect reason to venture deeper and add our next destination into your Borneo itinerary!

Getting to Kinabatangan River, Malaysian Borneo

Either book a Kinabatangan tour beforehand, negotiate a tour with the tour operators in Sandakan, or book an all-inclusive 2-night stay in Kinabatangan area lodges. Nowadays, many of the lodges offer all-inclusive prices at booking.com (including all activities and transfers), so prebooking a Kinabatangan River tour isn’t necessary anymore.

Danum Valley: The Luxurious Bornean Rainforest Vacation (3 Nights/4 Days)

If I’d have to pick only one destination in Malaysian Borneo, it would be Danum Valley. It’s the last stronghold of primary rainforest in Borneo, where you can hike along marked trails gazing to the immense, untouched jungle where no man has set foot.

Remote Primary Rainforest With Authentic Wildlife Encounters

Danum Valley is a naturalist’s paradise: before these 438 square kilometers of lowland dipterocarp forest was declared a conservation area, there were no human settlements, meaning no hunting or other interference with wildlife. More than 340 species of birds and 124 species of mammals call this their home – count in orangutans and Borneo pygmy elephants, both of which we were lucky to see more than once.

The Best Rainforest Lodge in Borneo

There’s only one lodge inside the Danum Valley Conservation Area, boasting ultimate seclusion and luxury. The award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge offers a gateway to the real jungle of Borneo on its private hiking trails inside the conservation area, along with the iconic, 300 meters long treetop canopy walkway , open exclusively to the guests.

All-inclusive rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge cover exciting activities – choose between nature walks with a naturalist guide, fun river tubing, versatile day hikes, birding, and night drives. Check our separate article on Danum Valley and get inspired!

If you can afford the rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge (nearing US$1000 per person per night), don’t hesitate to book it. But worry no more if you’re looking for more affordable options: check out the accommodation options at the nearby Danum Valley Field Center .

Experiencing the wilderness of Danum Valley is among the highlights of Borneo: please try to include it in your Borneo itinerary!

Getting to Danum Valley from Kinabatangan River (or Lahad Datu)

All-inclusive rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge include 2-hour transfer from the nearest town of Lahad Datu. MasWings has several daily flights from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu.

If you’re coming from Kinabatangan, ground transport is the quickest option (appr. 1-1,5 hours from Sukau to Lahad Datu). Either your lodge in Kinabatangan River or Borneo Nature Lodge can organize the transfer.

Danum Valley's Canopy Walkway is a dream come true for nature photographers

Kuching: Bustling Colonial City with Exciting Day Trips (3 Nights/4 Days)

After exploring the Sabah area for more than a week now, venture into another side of Malaysian Borneo: Sarawak. Kuching offers a convenient – and exciting – shortcut to the vast Sarawak.

The city of Kuching needs to be felt: roam the riverfront and the colorful streets of Old China Town with locals, pop in the acclaimed fusion restaurants and local eateries and eat your way through the highland and tribal cuisines. Check out a separate foodie guide for the best restaurants in Kuching!

The day trips are the draw of Kuching: you can visit even the far-flung corners of Sarawak on a day trip from Kuching. The hardest part is to choose between the several options and still leave enough time to feel the beat of Kuching.

We visited Bako National Park and Semenggoh Nature Reserve – both spellbinding in their own way. For us, the encounters with semi-wild orangutans in Semenggoh Wildlife Center felt more personal and special than in Sepilok, as the orangutan sanctuary is both smaller and less visited.

Bako National Park offers unbelievable versatile trails for short and long day hikes. The sceneries are otherworldly: think of untamed jungle beaches where bearded pigs grub sand and thick forest where proboscis monkeys play upon you. The vegetation is an incredibly versatile with seven different eco-systems – from mangrove to majestic cliffs and weird rock formations, swamp to mixed dipterocarp forest and keranga (a heath forest with acidic, sandy soil). The jungle beaches in Bako National Park among the best beaches in Borneo.

Getting to Kuching from Danum Valley (or Kota Kinabalu)

Cheap internal flights carry you conveniently almost from the furthest fringe of Sabah to Kuching, the capital of Sarawak. Driving from the coast of Sabah to Kuching would be insane (more than 1500 kilometers), as the flights take just a couple of hours.

We flew with Mas Wings from Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu: they have four daily flights with promo prices around 25$. To Kota Kinabalu–Kuching leg AirAsia proved to be a cheaper option.

Kota Kinabalu: Farewell to the Colonial Cities and Beaches of Borneo (1 Night/2 Days)

Kota Kinabalu entertained us only for one evening, but feel free to expand your stay. We enjoyed our sunset walk along the waterfront with locals, popping in the bustling – and endless – street food market. Somehow one night still felt enough for us: after the jewels of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu felt rather chaotic and dirty.

Some find Kota Kinabalu a pleasant base for day-trips in the nearby islands, but after Lankayan – or Semporna islands – you won’t find paradise here. The others end or start their holiday at the nearby beach resorts but our research drove us to ponder between Semporna Islands and Sandakan Islands (Lankayan).

The Kudat area on the tip of Sabah (accessible via Kota Kinabalu by road) sounds perfect for a budget beach stay if the all-inclusive prices of Lankayan turn you off.

Tweaks for 1-Week or 10-Day Borneo Itinerary

If you have one week or 10 days to spend in Borneo, narrow down our list of destinations according to your preferences. Personally, I’d drop visiting Kuching (Sarawak) for logistics. Thus, you could choose the best itinerary to match your likings from our Sabah itinerary article .

If you’d still like to visit Kuching, I’d skip one to two destinations of these three: Danum Valley, Lankayan Island, or Kinabatangan River. You can also save one night by skipping Sandakan.

Add-On Destinations for 3-Week Itinerary in Malaysian Borneo: Mt Kinabalu, Maliau Basin and More of Sarawak

Firstly, check out the pace of our 2-week Borneo itinerary. If you long for a more tranquil beat and have more time to spend, I’d suggest adding more days on Lankayan Island (especially if you’re a diver or an avid snorkeler) and Danum Valley (especially if you’re into hiking and wildlife). We were exceptionally pleased with this 2-week Borneo itinerary, so personally, I wouldn’t remove or add anything – other than more time to explore more destinations.

If you have 3 weeks and enough energy to spare, add extra loops for climbing Mt Kinabalu (we will return for that!), visiting Maliau Basin National Park in Sabah, or doing more day-trips from Kuching to the rest of Sarawak (Gunung Mulu caves, river cruises, Kelabit Highlands, and the longhouses of the headhunter tribe).

If you’re planning a 4-week itinerary in Borneo, consider venturing into the vast Indonesian side of Borneo called Kalimantan : there’s a lot more the explore!

It’s also easy to add Brunei to your Borneo itinerary – and tick off yet another country. For visiting Brunei from the Malaysian side of Borneo, you will need just a couple of days.

Where to Stay in Borneo

If this 2-week Borneo itinerary gets you going, be sure to check our favorite lodges around the Malaysian Borneo to get out the most of your stay! We handpicked several luxurious and affordable lodges, which will give you a real taste of Borneo with all the modern comforts, sumptuous dinners, and authentic wildlife encounters.

Check out our list of the best lodges in Malaysian Borneo!

When To Visit Borneo: High and Low Seasons

The high season in Borneo runs from March/May to September/October , meaning higher prices and more tourists. It’s not necessarily the best time to visit Borneo. To be honest, the high season is still the best time in Borneo to see orangutans and other wildlife in the wild, as it rains less.

We see Malaysian Borneo as an all-year-round destination, as we have learned that it will always rain in the rainforest. The weather patterns vary from area to another. Sabah is generally a better all-year-round destination than Sarawak, as it receives less rain.

The dry season in Sabah is from February to August . It rains a lot in Kuching and the inland of Sawarak (these areas receive the highest rainfall in the whole Malaysia), where the driest months are June and July.

Diving high season in Borneo runs from April to December. The best visibility for diving and snorkeling is during the summer months, from July to August. Whale shark season in Borneo is March–May. The best time to see turtles on Lankayan is June-September.

Please don’t let the rain stop your plans to visit Sarawak – or Sabah – during the wetter months. Borneo is a stunning destination – and it’s supposed to rain in the rainforest.

We visited both states, Sabah and Sarawak, during low season and saw little to none rain. We had amazing wildlife encounters in Sabah (orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, rare birds, and many other exciting species in the wild). Snorkeling in Lankayan Island was splendid, although it was low season for snorkeling and diving, as well.

We only advise to plan your itinerary in Borneo very carefully if you’re visiting during December or January, which are labeled as the worst months to visit Borneo. Consider changing your destinations in Sarawak to Sabah area to avoid the wetter areas.

Travel Safety in Borneo: Is It Safe to Travel to Borneo in 2019?

Traveling to Malaysian Borneo is considered generally safe in 2019, although some areas at the eastern coast of Sabah are still listed as possibly dangerous.

Currently, the UK government advises against all but essential travel off the coast of Sabah , including the islands of Lankayan, Sipadan, Pom Pom, Kapalai, and Mataking. The UK travel advice is based on old kidnappings in the area and the proximity of the Sulu Archipelago (Philippines).

The US Department of State lists Borneo as “Level 1: Exercise Normal Caution” area . Still, Eastern Sabah is labeled as “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” area.

We felt completely safe on Lankayan, as there’s also a military post. We’d visit any of the islands without a doubt, but as always, be vigilant and ask about the current security situation from the tour companies and lodges before booking.

Visiting Borneo FAQ

Check our answers to the most frequently asked questions about planning a trip to Borneo. Please let us know if you have any other questions on visiting Borneo – we’re happy to help!

Do I Need a Visa to Borneo?

Most tourists don’t need to apply for a visa beforehand to visit Indonesian or Malaysian Borneo. Citizens of the US, Canada, EU, Australia, and many other countries are permitted to stay in Borneo for 1-3 months.

Do I Need Yellow Fever Vaccination for Borneo?

There’s no risk of yellow fever in Borneo. However, if you’re coming from a country with yellow fever risk, you need to show your yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Malaysia.

If you’re coming from the US or EU, you don’t need yellow fever vaccination or certificate, unless you have more than 12 hours stopover in high risk area.

Which Vaccinations Do I Need for Borneo?

If you already have the usual travel vaccinations, MMR and diphtheria-tetanus-polio, you don’t need other injections to enter Borneo. We also have hepatitis A and B, which are recommended to all frequent travelers.

Is There Malaria in Borneo and Do I Need to Take Malaria Tablets?

Malaysian Borneo has low-risk malaria areas. Please talk with your doctor to find out your individual needs for malaria tablets. If you’re staying several days in the forested inland of Sabah and Sarawak, it might be wise to take preventative malaria medication. Indonesian Borneo is also low-risk malaria area.

We didn’t take antimalarials during this 2-week itinerary, but it was our own choice and against our doctor’s recommendation.

What Should I Pack for Borneo?

Your optimal Borneo packing list depends on where you’re planning to go and what you’re planning to do in Borneo, when you’re traveling, and where you are staying.

Generally, we’d advise to pack light and breathable clothes, a torch (if you’re staying off the grid), rain gear (it rains in the rainforest), swimming gear (and a snorkel if you have one), sandals and hiking boots or sneakers (depending on your planned activities), insect repellent and leech socks (also available in Borneo), and camera gear.

Our safari packing list is a good starting point also for adventurous vacations in Borneo.

What I Should Wear in Borneo?

Casual clothes are fine allover Borneo. Most people come either to the beaches or the rainforest, and dress accordingly. Weather is hot and humid, so light and breathable clothes are your best bet. For hiking, we recommend convertible pants and quick-dry t-shirts and tops. For city breaks, ladies might want to pack a casual dress or skirt and gents a pair of casual trousers if you’re eating out in fancier restaurants.

Generally, there is no dress code in Malaysian Borneo. As Brunei and Indonesian Borneo represent more strict Muslim culture, it’s polite to dress accordingly. Women should cover their knees and shoulders.

Excited and ready to book your trip to Borneo? Would you follow our steps tracking the beat of Borneo on this 2-week itinerary – or tweak a one-week or even one-month itinerary of your own? If you’ve visited Malaysian Borneo, what were the highlights for you and would you change something in our itinerary?

Your itinerary looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing it.

Did you book all of your flights/accommodations/trips separately? My boyfriend and I are on a tight budget and therefore I don’t know whether to book on to a tour or book everything myself?

Any tips would be appreciated!

borneo jungle river island tours

Hi Sophie! I’d recommend booking all flights by yourself. I’d also book independently all lodges (the only exception: all-inclusive prices or a tour for Kinabatangan River). Flights within Borneo are pretty cheap (AirAsia has usually the best rates). If you’re going to Kinabatangan River, I’d recommend booking either a tour or 2-night/3-night all-inclusive package from Booking.com (these are the same as the tour: the packages include transfers from Sandakan, all activities and meals). That’s the cheapest way to do it. In cities, you can get nice hotels at cheap prices. Check out our “Best lodges in Borneo” article for further recommendations and “Five Sabah itineraries” article for alternative itineraries. If you’re on a tight budget, I’d switch Lankayan to Kota Kinabalu Islands. Stay in Sepilok for orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries (very nice budget lodges available in a jungle setting, much more affordable than Kinabatangan or Danum Valley). Consider one night in Sandakan, as well (nice budget-friendly little town). If you’d like to see Danum Valley, check out the Danum Valley Field Center, as Borneo Rainforest Lodge is pretty expensive. Kuching is an amazing option, as well: cheap hotels and excellent food, great day trip options (check out at least Bako National Park and Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary). I’d pick Kuching for affordable Borneo trip. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Nina, Sadly we will have less than 2 weeks more like 10 days.I’m just checking out accommodation in Kota Kinabalu for the end of our trip – generally it’s not a problem but I’m struggling !! Any suggestions for an itinerary would be helpful. Thank you again Kathryn

Hi Kathryn, This will be a long answer.

I’d stay only one night in Kota Kinabalu – it’s not that exciting place, and the hotels are rather dull. We stayed in Grandis: it was no frills kind of hotel, claims to be 4-star, but I’d say more like 3-star. The deal that we got from booking.com was affordable, the location is good, the rooms clean and do the job if you’re just sleeping there. If you’d like to invest a little more (double the price), I’d probably pick Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, although Shangri-La is 4,5 kilometers away from the center. It really depends on what you’re planning to do in Kota Kinabalu. Ultimately, I’d pick Shangri-La for 2-3-day stay (enough time to relax and explore the city and nearby islands if that’s what you’re looking for) and any of the solid 4-star hotels in KK for a quick 1-night stay (better location for walking around Kota Kinabalu and experiencing the city).

As to 10-day itinerary, I’d definitely pick Lankayan Island (it would be the highlight for your girls!) and Kinabatangan River. Another highlight would be Danum Valley (although it’s pricey): it’s super fun for the girls with all the activities (tubing in Danum River, canopy walkway, mini hikes in the rainforest, swimming and of course wildlife spotting). I’d go basically with our 2-week itinerary, but I’d drop out Kuching, so you would be based in Sabah. You can also trade Danum Valley to Kuching and it’s still a perfect itinerary, then you could also fly out from Kuching.

So, the 10-day itinerary would be like this, depending on your flights: 1 night in Kota Kinabalu (only if your flight arrives late or you’d prefer relaxing after a long flight. Otherwise, pick a connecting flight to Sandakan) 1-2 nights in Sepilok (orangutan sanctuary, sun bear sanctuary, possible also other activities, please check our separate article on things to do in Sepilok; one night might be enough if you stay in Kota Kinabalu but it’s better to come straight to Sepilok and stay to nights there to relax) 2 nights on Kinabatangan River (book a package deal with transports from Sepilok, check out our article on Kinabatangan) 1 night in Sandakan (dinner at waterfront, possibly English Teahouse for views and lunch, walking around the city and many smaller sights available) 2-3 nights on Lankayan Island (please check our separate articles on snorkeling and the island) 3 nights in Danum Valley (if you can squeeze it in). If the itinerary feels too rushed, expand the other stays according to your preferences and stay the last night in Kota Kinabalu.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. If you’d like to us to plan the route for you in details, we offer itinerary planning at a small charge.

Borneo is so versatile that I’d definitely pick it for your family vacation. You cannot find better wildlife watching from other Asian countries and snorkeling is unique. As much as we love Cambodia, the beaches there aren’t that good. Cambodian holiday would focus more on temples and history. Borneo Rainforest Lodge (our pick for accommodation in Danum Valley) is also listed among the best wildlife lodges in Asia. Seeing orangutans in the wild is among the highlight of our travels – you cannot really compare it to anything else (we’ve also been gorilla trekking and chimp trekking in Uganda but that’s a different story). Also orangutan sanctuary visits in Borneo are special (Sepilok & Kuching). We just published a separate article on spotting orangutans, you might want to check it out.

Please consider booking your hotels stays in Borneo through our booking.com affiliate link http://www.booking.com/index.html?aid=1132006 (also links to other booking sites are found on Travel Resources page, on our site’s top navigation): we would receive a small commission without any extra charge for you. Thank you so much for your support.

Sunny greetings from Namibia! Niina

Fabulous information on Borneo – we hope to travel with our girls (age 13/14) in December and need to work out a good itinerary They love animals and the beach !! Could you suggest a good plan – I’m getting more confused the more I research ! Thank you in advance

Hi Kathryn! How many days do you have in Borneo? I’m just about to publish another article for shorter itineraries (one week or less). If you do have 2 weeks, I’d go with this itinerary, as it has a perfect mix of wildlife and beach time and snorkeling/diving. All these areas are also fun for kids and safe for now (2019). If you have more than 2 weeks in Borneo, I’m happy to give you further suggestions!

We hope to leave the UK 15th December and fly home 24th December – thought this might help in addition to my previous message.Apart from Borneo I thought of maybe Laos or Cambodia.

Your itinerary is amazing! I have checked out the SI tour website and considering the LOWER KINABATANGAN RIVER & DANUM VALLEY tour. https://sitoursborneo.com/web/mysia16/ is this the tour that you did with SI or did you get a tailored package?

Hi Tania! Thanks so much, we loved our every minute in Borneo! We were with SI Tours only in Kinabatangan: the first night in Abai and the second night in Sukau. We visited Danum Valley with Borneo Nature Tours, who owns Borneo Rainforest Lodge. But you can add Danum Valley also to your itinerary with SI Tours 🙂 I’m sure it will be an epic trip!

Oh, awesome post! Reading your post reminds me of the amazing nature in Kota Kinabalu. I see that the everything there is preserved very well. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

Thanks so much! Glad to hear that you enjoyed visiting Kota Kinabalu. Did you also do further exploration around Malaysian Borneo? If so, I’m curious to hear what were the highlights for you?

Wow this itinerary has got me super excited! even though I won’t be going for another 2 years I am starting to save right now! seeing orangutans in the wild is my ultimate life long dream! how far in advance did you book borneo rainforest lodge? I am looking at pre booking everything on booking.com but I think I would need to book directly through them? thanks in advance from Abbie

Hi Abbie! And thanks for tuning in. Seeing orangutans in the wild was also our dream – you’ll absolutely love Borneo! If you know your exact dates and happen to travel during school holidays, I’d book well in advance. We booked every lodge just a couple of months in advance, so we were super lucky to get the very last room from Borneo Rainforest Lodge (but we had to reorganize our itinerary to fit into their vacancy). So please book several months in advance, no matter your timing! You won’t be disappointed in Borneo Rainforest Lodge: it’s so worth the splurge! The daily activities with your own guide are so versatile and offer profound insight into the wilderness. It’s such a divine place! I’d book directly with them, though you can also book through travel agents. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Happy planning!

Really great article! thanks for the tips. Any recommendations for a tour company to book the Sungai Kinabatangan River segment through? thanks!

Hi Joey! Thanks for reading. We explored Kinabatangan River with SI Tours and were extremely pleased with their guides and the location of the lodges. We loved Abai area for its tranquility and Sukau area for spotting even more orangutans and seeing the rare pygmy elephants. I’d recommend staying at least one night in the both areas. SI Tours owns Abai Jungle Lodge in Abai and Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge in Sukau. Piritta also wrote a separate article on Kinabatangan River, you can read it here: https://www.bizarreglobehopper.com/blog/2017/07/12/kinabatangan-river-cruise-malaysian-borneo Please let us know if you have any questions. Enjoy Borneo!

Hey there – your trip looks amazing and thanks for the really useful article. I’m thinking of doing the trip myself in July – do you have a rough total spend for the trip? Whereabouts did you fly from?

Hi Andrew! Congrats on your trip, it’ll be awesome! The majority of the budget in this kind of tour goes into all-inclusive accommodation (Danum Valley/Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Lankayan Island/Lankayan Island Dive Resort, Kinabatangan River & Sepilok/SI Tours; between 230$-1200$ per person per day). But then again, it’s all inclusive in the best possible sense: all fantastic wildlife tours and meals are catered. The prices also include transfers from the nearest airport (Lahad Datu for Danum Valley, Sandakan for Sepilok/Kinabatangan and Lankayan). In the cities of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, we stayed in “normal but nice hotels” and ate out; there our daily budget varied between 50$ to 100$ per person. Internal flights were cheap (we used AirAsia and Mas Wings), the cheapest promo prices at the time were 13$ for Kota Kinabalu-Sepilok leg, 25$ for Lahad Datu-Kota Kinabalu and about the same for Kota Kinabalu-Kuching leg. I’d recommend checking AirAsia for the cheapest fares and Booking.com for hotels in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and possibly Sandakan (we stayed there one night, as well). If you use Booking.com, please consider using our affiliate link: http://www.booking.com/index.html?aid=1132006 – there’s no extra cost for you, but we’ll get a small provision that fuels this blog.

What a fantastic adventure. I’m very envious. Yet to make it to that quite that far east but hopefully one day….

Hey, Great itinerary. We’re thinking of heading to Borneo this fall, so it’s nice to see an overview like this of all the tops spots.

We have a little longer to spend, so we might indeed take the road instead of flying. We prefer the road to flying even when it’s more expensive / inconvenient because flying for such short distances is terrible for the environment. Also, if you’re on the ground, you get to experience more of the country you’re in! So there are great reasons to take the road, even if a flight is only $13!

Hi, Jane! Thanks for reading. I really appreciate your view and totally agree with the ecological print. Plus, Pan-Borneo Highway and comfortable tourist buses make road travel easy. But when you are short on time and road takes 10+ hours against an easy 1-hour flight, it’s hard to resist the temptation. In future, we hope to slow down our pace to explore deeper. Even we enjoyed our road trip from Kinabatangan to Danum Valley (whereas all the others took a boat from Kinabatangan to Sandakan and flew the legs Sandakan-Kota Kinabalu and KK-Lahad Datu, which sounds crazy). Just let us know if you have any questions about the places we visited. Happy planning and happy travels!

Hi, Jen & Mina! Thanks for reading. We really loved all the spots we had a chance to stay in Borneo. Lankayan Island and Danum Valley were both exclusive, once in a lifetime kind of experiences. Lankayan is a paradise for snorkelers and divers, whereas Danum Valley is a haven for naturalists, birders, and wildlife photographers. The lodges are luxurious in both, crowning the experience. Oh, how we wish to return!

Hi, Alyssa! Thanks for stopping by! We need to return to explore Sarawak: Niah and Mulu caves are on our list 😉 We saw the pygmies once in Kinabatangan, by the river bank. Our guide had heard of their presence, so we did a lot longer river safari than usual to reach them. It was so special to observe them through the grass; we’ll cherish that experience forever! The other times happened while we drove to Danum Valley: the pygmies were suddenly in the middle of the road just before us! But they took off faster than I could dig my camera bag. When we returned from Danum Valley, we saw the same herd and managed to get at least some shots with our phones. We feel so grateful for all those moments and know that we were really lucky.

Omg, you found paradise! Thank you for the amazing post. Def on my bucket list now <3

The place that you stayed looked so luxurious. What an amazing experience!

This is a great!!! I live in Borneo myself and I’m guilty of not doing half of this list (except Kuching. I live in Miri though ☺️). I’ve only spent time in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Also, glad that you saw the pygmies!!! I heard they’re pretty elusive, and on certain times do people see them crossing the rivers in Kinabatangan cruise so you’re very very lucky!

Your orangutan pictures are great!
