How to Make Your Own DIY Book Sleeves (With Photos!)

Book sleeves are a must for any readers who take their books off the shelves and out into the world. These padded fabric pouches prevent all the creasing, marking, and (god forbid!) ripping that tends to happen to books that get carried around in a purse. DIY book sleeves are simple to make, super cute, and make great gifts if you can manage not to keep them all for yourself.

These fabric book sleeves are made with quilting cottons, padded with fusible fleece, and have pointed tabs with velcro closures. Use this DIY book sleeve sewing pattern to make custom book sleeves for yourself or a bookish friend!

1. Cut fabric

For the larger sleeve (finished measurements 8 ½” x 11”): cut 2 rectangles of main fabric 9 ½” x 12” cut 2 rectangles of lining fabric 9 ½” x 12” cut 2 rectangles of fusible fleece 8 ½” x 11”

For the tab: cut 2 identical triangles with a 4 inch base and a 5 inch height cut 1 triangle of fusible fleece in the same shape

2. Fuse the fusible fleece

Place a rectangle of fusible fleece on an ironing board with the fusible (rough) side facing up. Center a rectangle of main fabric over the fusible fleece, right side up. The wrong side of the main fabric should face the fusible side of the fleece.

Cover the two fabrics with a damp press cloth and press for 10–15 seconds with a hot iron. Repeat with second rectangles of fusible fleece and main fabric.

Trim the fusible fleece for the tab so that the fusible part does not go past the edge of the tab fabric when it is laid on top.

With the fleece on the ironing board and the fusible side up, lay the tab fabric on top with the right side facing you. Cover with a damp press cloth and press for 10–15 seconds with a hot iron.

3. Sew the DIY book sleeves

Use ½ inch seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

Sew a 1 inch piece of velcro (hook side) onto one main fabric/fleece rectangle, centered on shorter edge and 1½ inches below top.

With right sides facing, sew main fabric/fleece rectangles together along the long sides. Do the same with rectangles of lining fabric.

Trim seam allowance to a scant ¼ inch. Press seams open.

Sew the tab pieces together, right sides facing, along the two long sides of the triangle.

Trim seam allowance close very close to the stitches.

Turn tab out and press. Coverstitch ⅛ inch from edge.

Pin a 2 inch piece of velcro (soft side) onto tab, as pictured. Sew from corner to corner in an “X” shape.

Pin lining to main fabric along top edge with right sides facing.

Unpin the side of the main fabric that does not have the velcro. Sandwich velcro tab inside as pictured. Pin, making sure the velcro is facing the lining side.

Sew together. Trim seam allowance to a scant ¼ inch. Turn lining to inside and press. Topstitch ⅛ inch from edge.

Pull lining and main fabric apart. Pin bottom edge of main fabric together with right sides facing and sew. Trim seam allowance to ¼ inch.

Turn right side out and press. Turn bottom edge of lining in and slip stitch closed.

Turn lining to inside of sleeve. Slide your book in, velcro up, and toss (gently!) into your bag!

Introduction: DIY Sewn Book Sleeve

I don't know about you, but I love reading. I bring books almost everywhere I go. To the beach, to school, on car rides, etc. Sometimes though, my book pages get bent and creased beyond repair (especially in my book bag, other things push into the pages and mess up the book!)

Well if you can relate to this, you've probably thought that there must be a better way to keep your book safe from any other objects that are potentially a danger to the pages. I'm happy to let you know that there is a better way!

I'm pretty involved in the book community on Instagram and I have seen a lot of pictures of a thing called book beau . That's where I got the inspiration to make this sleeve! I hope you enjoy :)

Step 1: Supplies

1. 2 complimentary pieces of fabric (each fabric at least 21" x 8.5")

2. Cotton batting (at least 24" x 20")

3. Lightweight fusible interfacing (at least 11" x 19")

4. 2" of an elastic cord (I used a hair tie)

6. Sewing machine

7. Scissors

8. Sewing needle

9. Sewing thread

Step 2: Cutting the Pieces

Cut the fabrics into two pieces each so that you have four total.

Each piece is 10.5" tall and 8.5" wide.

Make sure you know which piece will be your outer fabric and which one will be your inner lining.

Step 3: Putting the Pieces Together

Cut two pieces of fusible interfacing that extend at least 1/2" outside of the fabric on all sides.

Fuse the bumpy side of the interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric with an iron. Make sure that it is completely smooth and centered.

Cut out 2 pieces of cotton batting that extends another 1/2" past the interfacing and put pins through all three layers every few inches or so. This will hold the layers together while you sew.

Step 4: Quilt!

I've never quilted before, so my lines aren't completely straight, but I think they turned out pretty nice!

I sewed a line every inch, (up and down then side to side) to make a grid pattern. This will keep the batting from sliding away from the fabric when your sleeve is assembled.

If you go back and forth on the first couple stitches (at the beginning and the end of a line) it will keep your stitches from coming out.

Repeat with the second piece.

Step 5: Clean It Up

Trim down the excess fusible interfacing and cotton batting so that both line up with the fabric. Make sure not to cut too much so that you cut the quilting stitches.

Repeat with the other piece.

Step 6: Sew the Inner and Outer Fabrics Together

Start by pinning down the elastic band so that it will be sewn down with the stitch.

Put the inner fabric on top of the quilted piece with the right sides facing each other.

Put pins along the top edge (where the elastic loop is) and sew a 1/4" seam.

Repeat with the second quilted piece that doesn't have the elastic loop.

Step 7: Put It All Together

Begin by placing the two units together, with the like fabrics facing each other (outer on top of outer, inner on top of inner).

Put pins along all of the edges and sew a 1/4" seam along the whole thing.

Make sure to leave a 3" opening at the bottom of the lining so that you can turn the whole thing inside out.

Step 8: Turn It Inside-Out

Clip the corners so that the edges won't be too bulky.

Turn the whole thing inside out through the 3" hole. It might be a little but difficult but eventually you can fit the whole thing through.

Close up the hole by sewing a line with a tiny seam.

Step 9: Final Touches

Hand-stitch a button onto the front of the pouch. Make sure that it lines up perfectly with the elastic strap.

If you need to adjust the size of the elastic, you can cut out the old one and hand-stitch another one on.

Iron the unit flat and make sure the corners and edges are fully pushed out.

Step 10: Finished!

And that's it! This whole project only took me about two hours and it's already been super useful for when I want to take my books out of the house safely.

Elvis Presley's bible found on nightstand after he died is up for auction

Items owned by the late Elvis Presley will hit the auction block on Saturday.

The personalized bible found on Presley's nightstand after he died is among the items available from Kruse GWS Auctions. A note from Presley's cousin, Patsy, which confirms how the bible was found, comes with the item.

"Shortly after Elvis' passing my uncle Vernon (Elvis' dad) and I went up into Elvis' bedroom at Graceland to organize and pack many of his personal belongings," the note said. "This Holy Bible was one of three that Elvis had on his night table. After packing them Uncle Vernon had me take them home for safe keeping and eventually gave them to me."

Presley died of a heart attack on Aug. 16, 1977.

AUCTION FOR ELVIS PRESLEY'S GRACELAND MANSION WITHDRAWN AFTER JUDGE BLOCKS SALE BECAUSE OF FRAUD ALLEGATIONS

The bible up for auction features the musician's full name, Elvis Aaron Presley, embossed in gold. Presley seemingly highlighted portions of scripture that spoke to him, including a passage from the book of Job:

Other items up for auction include jewelry, his Army uniform, sunglasses and a signed chair.

The Army uniform has Presley's name and sleeve patches. The "Hound Dog" singer served from 1958 to 1960.

Presley's faith was well known during his lifetime. The singer's stepbrother Billy Stanley recalled the "Burning Love" singer being "in touch with the Lord."

"A lot of people don’t realize that after every show, he would unwind by singing gospel songs until the sun came up," Stanley told Fox News Digital. "He was in touch with the Lord. A lot of people said, ‘Well, he did this and that.’ [But] we all fall short. We’re all human."

"As Christians, most of us live under a magnifying glass," he added. "Well, Elvis lived under a microscope because he was a big star. It was tough. But the way I like to put it is… [he] had the devil on one shoulder and God on the other. And there was a constant battle going on in his head."

The auction of Presley's items comes days after a judge halted the auction of Graceland, the singer's historic Memphis, Tennessee, home. Naussany Investments & Private Lending was set to put the home up for auction after claiming Lisa Marie Presley never paid off a $3.8 million loan before her death. Lisa Marie had used Graceland as collateral, according to the investment group.

However, Lisa Marie's daughter sued the company, alleging the loan never existed.

Naussany Investments & Private Lending chose to withdraw the plans completely following the injunction.

"As the court has now made clear, there was no validity to the claims," a statement released by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. read. "There will be no foreclosure. Graceland will continue to operate as it has for the past 42 years, ensuring that Elvis fans from around the world can continue to have the best in class experience when visiting his iconic home."

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Best, worst times to travel for Memorial Day weekend

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Here's a breakdown of the best and worst times to travel by car depending on which day you are traveling:

Thursday, May 23

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, May 24

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 25

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 26

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday, May 27

• Best travel time: After 7 p.m.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.
