Cycle touring isn’t just for Lycra-clad enthusiasts. Europe alone offers hundreds of accessible cycle tours aimed at the casual rider, from Mediterranean coastal roads to river-hugging bike paths.

Exploring Europe on two wheels is the best way to avoid crowds while experiencing its iconic landscapes from a new perspective. And by booking through a trusted tour company, beginners avoid the common pitfalls of planning a cycling trip abroad. Typical benefits start with bikes and equipment included, as well as pre-planned routes, luggage transfers, pre-booked hotels, and professional guides to help with all aspects of the trip.

We’ve narrowed down the very best European cycle tours for beginners, with a mix of self-guided and tour-led packages.

Editor’s Note: Although some of Europe is starting to open to (vaccinated) American tourists, other destinations on this list have travel restrictions, and should be saved for future travel. If you do go, be sure to follow all local rules and guidelines both at your destination and upon returning home.

Self-Guided Cycle Tours for Beginners

BikeTours.com’s self-guided Danube Bike Path Tour offers six days of moderate cycling along the German and Austrian stretch of the river, starting in Passau and finishing up in Vienna. Along the way you’ll explore medieval castles, drink brandy at a Trappist monastery, and take several detours through lush Bavarian forest.

Will Europe Be Open to Americans This Summer?

Loch Ness and the Highlands: Exodus Travels

Scenic view along the Exodus Travels bike tour

Summer and early autumn is the prime cycling season in the Scottish Highlands. Exodus offers a leisurely five-day tour along the stunning Great Glen Way , taking in the entire length of Loch Ness and its lesser-known neighbor, Loch Lochy. With only a few gentle climbs involved, the route offers plenty of spectacular views without the lung-busting ascents of other Highland tours. Keen on Scots history? Make a final day stop at Cawdor Castle (home to Shakespeare’s Macbeth), and the battlefield at Culloden.

Freewheeling in Catalonia: Inntravel

People biking along a country path

From the snow-capped Pyrenes to the glistening Costa Brava, there’s no shortage of scenery in northern Catalonia. Inntravel’s scenic eight-day tour showcases this overlooked corner of Spain, sticking mainly to dedicated cycling paths ideal for beginners. Like many a great European cycle tour, you’ll pedal through hidden valleys dotted with small villages and enjoy excellent local food and wine. There’s also a free day in Girona, a historical city replete with ancient walls and Roman fortresses.

Lakes & Cities of Slovenia: Helia Travel

Slovenia packs a lot of beauty into its small borders. This five-day cycle tour by Helia Travel takes in two of the country’s must-sees—the iconic Lake Bled (with its fairytale island castle ), and the cobblestoned capital, Ljubljana. With the Slovenian Alps never far away, the panoramas are breathtaking. If you’re feeling bold, there’s a 750m climb to the Jelovica high plateau—or catch a lift for 20 euros per rider.

Cycling in the Algarve: Responsible Travel

Bikers taking a break beneath a porch awning

A fresh Algarve breeze eases you along this east-to-west tour of southern Portugal . The seven-day route offers flexibility—choose from shorter or longer distances each day, from 30km to 50km. The Algarve is known as the Portuguese Riviera, so expect reliably good weather and outstanding local seafood. Tour organizers Responsible Travel suggest skipping August, as peak summer temperatures can be too hot for comfortable cycling.

Fully-Guided Group Cycle Tours for Beginners

Normandy Cycle Tour: Trek Travel

bike tours in europe for beginners

World War II buffs will enjoy this six-day cycling trip by Trek Travel , featuring three of Normandy’s most important D-Day sites. The flat, picturesque landscapes of northern France are ideal for beginners and casual cyclists—and you’ll be led by two experienced guides with a support van in tow. Tour highlights include a picnic and apple cider tasting at a traditional cider estate (Normandy is famous for the stuff), and a private guided tour of Omaha Beach by a local historian.

Bike Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe and Comfortable While Riding

Puglia’s Undiscovered Coast: VBT

bike tours in europe for beginners

The “heel” of Italy’s boot, Puglia offers exceptional riding for beginner cyclists. VTB’s easygoing seven-day guided tour sticks to quiet country roads, where you’ll pedal past olive groves, beaches, and stone-sculpted seaside towns. Out of the saddle, there’s an afternoon of olive oil tasting, plus several farm-fresh meals prepared by local hosts. Although very little climbing is involved, e-Bikes are available on request.

Champagne Cycle Tour: Duvine

bike tours in europe for beginners

Into indulgence? Duvine’s four-day tour of France’s Champagne country serves up calories galore as you pedal from one illustrious Champagne house to the next. The riding is easy (provided you haven’t eaten too much), and Duvine’s tour guides are bilingual in French and English. Starting at the UNESCO-listed town of Reims, you’ll finish up at the village of Hautvillers, where Dom Perignon first discovered how to make champagne. Michelin-starred food options include wild game, waffles, and boeuf carbonnade .

Baltic Sea Ocean Cruise Bike Tour: Backroads

bike tours in europe for beginners

This scenic tour of the Baltic Sea squeezes five countries into eight days (Denmark, Estonia, Russia, Finland, and Sweden). If that sounds daunting, think again—most of the distance is spent sailing on a small luxury ship. Back on the saddle, there’s time to explore two of the world’s most bike-friendly cities, Copenhagen and Helsinki. You’ll also cover dozens of miles along the flat Baltic coastline, plus an afternoon detour to St. Petersburg’s Pushkin Palace, home to Catherine the Great. Backroads offers several bicycle models , including a tandem bike for couples who just can’t be separated.

5 Easy cycling routes in Europe – Cycling Holidays for Beginners

Are you a cycling newbie who wants to start bicycle touring and is looking for easy routes without massive climbs and many cars? I’ve got you covered! In this article, I have described 5 easy routes around Europe – all of them beginner-friendly, with good infrastructure and easy to navigate.

I chose designated routes as it’s easier to navigate, although I personally rarely stick to them over a longer time. I believe they are a perfect choice for a newbie bike tourer. It’s also easier to find fellow cyclists, something you might appreciate as a beginner. It gives you a wonderful sense of community and allows you to meet people with the same passion, and provides some additional security if you run into issues with your bike.

There is plenty of easy cycling routes in Europe and this list is by no means an extensive one!

I chose mostly routes following rivers or the coast since they have a flatter topography. Some of them, like the Elbe Cycling Route or The Flanders Route, partially lead through hilly areas but won’t require big climbs.

As a beginner, you might get overwhelmed by just looking at the length of some of these routes. The goal doesn’t need to be to cover the whole distance. You can pick a specific section or take public transportation on some stretches.

There are also countless options for editing these routes. Using apps like  Komoot , you can look for deviations if you decide not to follow the designated trail religiously.

If you need advice on navigation apps for bicycle touring, read this article.

Danube Cycle Path

The Danube Cycle Path stretches from Germany to Romania. However, most cyclists decide to cycle the stretch from Vienna to Budapest. This unique route allows you to visit three European capitals within less than a week.

This is probably the number one bicycle route among the not-so-experienced and not-so-adventurous bicycle tourers. At first, I thought it might be too easy and boring, as I usually crave more raw adventures. I was wrong: with the blue waters of the Danube, historic towns and plenty of cyclists, the Danube Bicycle Path is an exciting ride, accessible for beginners.

Danube Cycling Path - one of the most beautiful easy cycling routes in Europe

Country:  Austria, Slovakia and Hungary

Elevation:  flat (on average 294m/100 km or 1562 ft/100 miles)

Length:  339 km / 210 miles

Traffic:  mostly designated bicycle lanes, some small roads with little traffic

Road quality:  very good

Trains/public transportation:  this route is quite short so even as a beginner, you should be able to cover it all by bike but if needed, you will be able to catch a train along the route.

Signage:  Great. Just look for the EV6 signs, and you won’t get lost!

Highlights:  Vienna, Bratislava,  Dunajske Luhy protected area , the Danube Bend, ferry in VĂĄc, Visegrad, Budapest.

Velo Baltica

I lived in Gdańsk for almost 8 years, and the routes along the Baltic Sea used to be my favourite weekend getaway with my bike. Breathing in the aroma of the cluster pine and listening to the sound of the waves has a truly therapeutic effect on your mind and soul.

Although the cycling infrastructure is supposedly better in Germany and Denmark, I decided to describe the Polish part of Velo Baltica simply out of personal sentiment.

bike tours in europe for beginners

My route goes from Gdańsk to Świnoujście, but you can extend it to Rostock or even to Copenhagen, as it continues flat all the way to Denmark).

Country:  Poland

Elevation:  flat (on average 254 m/100 km or 1343 ft / 100 miles)

Length: 427 km / 265 miles

Traffic:  very little

Road quality:  decent, but there are some stretches around Leba where you might heavily struggle through sandy trails.

Alternative:  take a detour to  Hel  for charming lighthouses, seals, and gorgeous beaches.

bike tours in europe for beginners

Trains/public transportation:  It’s very easy to take a train with your bike between Gdańsk and Lębork (you can check the timetable on the SKM TrĂłjmiasto website ). Further west, there are fewer connections

GPS file:  You can  download the GPS file from EuroVelo’s official website . Most of the route is fully developed and marked, but some parts are still under development, so the GPS might be useful.

Highlights:  the old town and Solidarity Center in Gdańsk ,  the dunes in Słowiński National Park , Sopot, Kołobrzeg,  Świnoujście  and the  Wolin Island .

Flanders Route

Cycling is deeply woven into the culture and traditions of Belgium. The cobbled roads of the Tour of Flanders attract thousands of road cyclists from all over Europe. With its impressive network of cycle paths, cute historical towns and quiet forests, Flanders is also a perfect place for rookie bicycle tourers.

Country:  Belgium

Elevation:  slightly hilly (on average 479 m/100 km or 2665 ft / 100 miles).

Length: 949 km / 560 miles

Traffic:  Most of the route is on designated bicycle lanes and only sometimes small roads with little traffic.

Road quality:  Very good.

Alternatives:  There are endless options to edit the route, with an incredible network of cycling routes in Flanders. It’s absolutely worth taking a detour to  cycle through the water  or  through the trees .

cycling through the water in Belgium

Trains/public transportation:  It’s easy to  take your bike on a train in Belgium , and there are frequent connections between cities. A bike supplement costs 4 euros.

Highlights: the famous Flemish cities Gent, Antwerp and Bruges; the beach in Oostende; the Town Hall and the beetle on the Needle in Leuven; Hoge Kempen National Park , and the bike paths through the Apple orchards in Limburg.

Elbe Cycling Route

Following the Elbe river from the mountains, through Prague, Dresden, Magdeburg, and Hamburg, all the way to the North Sea in Cuxhaven, the Elbe Cycling Route is one of Europe’s most various and scenic bicycle routes.

While almost 1300 kilometres sound overwhelming for a beginner cyclist, you can pick one section of the route depending on your preferences. If you appreciate the mountainous landscape, choose the part from Spindleruv Mlyn (it’s still mostly flat, don’t worry! ). The northern part of the Elbe Cycling Route will be perfect for those who like the sea, the Hanseatic cities and the lowlands.

easy cycling routes in europe - Elbe cycling route

Country:  Czech Republic / Germany

Elevation:  flat (281 m/100 km or 1547 ft / 100 miles)

Length: 1197 km / 744 miles

Traffic: Very little. More than half of the route runs on designated bicycle lanes or paths.

Road quality:  Good.   Mostly asphalt, some gravel and dirt.

Elbe Cycling Routes - one of the best easy cycling routes in Europe for beginners

Trains/public transportation:  Taking a bicycle on a train in Germany  and in Czechia is relatively easy so you won’t have problems skipping a part of the route. Be aware that some intercity trains don’t take bikes on board.

Signage:  Good

Highlights:  Krkonose National Park , the rocky landscape of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland , the old town of Prague , Dresden , and the port city of Hamburg .

The Dutch Coast

Each corner of the Netherlands is a paradise for cycling, no matter where you go. Forget those narrow, bumpy cycle lanes that make no sense which we know in most of the world. Here, the cyclist is king, and the infrastructure makes biking convenient, fast and safe.

If the main reason you didn’t venture to go on your first bicycle tour yet was the fear of cycling among cars, the Netherlands should be your first destination.

There are endless options for great cycling routes in the Netherlands, but my favourite one is the coast route, with picturesque dunes and lovely sandy beaches.

bike tours in europe for beginners

You can easily edit this route if you want to see the great Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Utrecht (probably the best cycling city in the world!). In the Netherlands, you never have to worry about the bicycle lanes and the safety, so it’s a perfect country to improvise, be creative and explore!

beginners cycling holidays in europe - netherland has the safest bicycle lanes

Country:  the Netherlands

Elevation:  flat like a pancake (on average 182 m/100 km or 960 ft / 100 miles)

Length:  621 km / 386 miles

Traffic:  mostly designated bicycle lanes, some country roads with little traffic.

Road quality:  very good/perfect for a road bike

In the Netherlands, even cycling in big cities feels easy and safe. Here a bicycle lane in Rotterdam.

Trains/public transportation:  it’s easy to take your bike on a train in the Netherlands

Signage:  Great. There is also a  special app  with the route and practical information.

Important info:  there are many ferries on this route. Always check their timetable beforehand!

Highlights:   Peaceful Zeeland , cosmopolitan The Hague, Haarlem (sometimes called the little Amsterdam, but without the annoying tourists), the sand dunes near Zandvoort.

7 Scenic Bike Tours in Europe for Every Level

While seeing a destination by train might be one of the most romanticized ways to travel, there’s nothing quite like feeling the wind in your hair as you cycle across the continent. Because many European countries are bike-friendly, there’s no better place to embark on a multi-day journey that blends physical activity with plenty of sightseeing. We scouted seven best bike tours in Europe with varying difficulty levels, from an easy ride through France’s Champagne region to an advanced route through Norwegian fjords.

Over seven cycling days (there are three days of other forms of travel), you’ll visit a farm with an olive oil mill in Ostuni, swim in the Adriatic Sea in the coastal town of Otranto, and explore the prehistoric Cervi Grottoes in between dining on fresh seafood and local wines.

On this nine-day, mid-level tour with Ciclismo , cyclers will be able to take in the best of Belgium, from beer to World War II history. The route begins with a day in Luxembourg, where you can explore an old castle and monastery in the village of Clervaux. You’ll then cycle about 41 miles per day up and down hills through the Belgian countryside, stopping at breweries for craft beer tastings, war memorials, and charming villages (including the iconic town of Bruges) filled with fortresses, castles, and old churches. You’ll even hop the border into the Netherlands and stop in the seaside town of Sluis, known for its classic windmills.

Land and Sea along the Dalmatian Coast with Butterfield & Robinson

Length: 8 Days | Difficulty: Difficult

Mix your cycling with some sailing on this eight-day journey down Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast between Split and Dubrovnik. While you’ll bike by day through the hills and cliffs of both mainland Croatia as well as some of its islands—the country has more than 1,200 of them—you’ll relax at night aboard a luxury yacht that has a sauna and a Jacuzzi. Some of the island highlights include the bustling port of Hvar Town, a popular spot with the yachting crowd; the stunning national park on the island of Mljet; olive groves on the sparsely populated island of Vis; and the 8th-century walled Korcula Town.

Champagne, France

Champagne, France with DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

Length: 4 Days | Difficulty: Easy

If you’re a cycler who loves to imbibe (not while on your bike, of course!), this beginner-level tour with DuVine  Cycling + Adventure Co. is for you. After all, what could be more magical than taking a spin around the Champagne region of France, visiting some of the domaines that produce your favorite bubbly? You’ll begin your journey in Reims (home to a famous cathedral where the kings of France were once crowned) before venturing out to the countryside to see historic World War I sites before arriving in Épernay, where Moët et Chandon is produced. Afterwards, your route winds through the Marne River Valley to see elegant châteaux and eventually stops in Hautvillers, home of Dom Pérignon.

Ireland's West Coast with REI

Length: 8 Days | Difficulty: Intermediate

Best for mid-level riders, this tour with REI begins in Shannon, then crosses the Burren on the way to the iconic Cliffs of Moher. You’ll take a brief stop at Father Ted’s house for tea, then ferry over to the Aran Islands, exploring Inis Oírr and Inis Mór both on bike and on foot. A ferry brings the group to Connemara, where you’ll cycle through mountains, bogs, and beaches. Finally, you’ll ride to Kylemore Abbey and Ballynahinch Castle to tour the historic sites before heading to Galway.

From there, the winding route takes you along the Romantic Road in the Lustrafjord; across the Sognefjellet mountain pass, the highest in Northern Europe at over 4,600 feet; past the Nigardsbreen and Bergset glaciers; and to the farms of the village of Fimreite.

Baltic Land and Sea with Backroads

Length: 9 Days | Difficulty: Easy

In just nine days, you’ll cover five different countries on the Baltic Sea during this Backroads tour , which combines cycling and cruising. The journey begins in Denmark, where you'll tour cosmopolitan Copenhagen before biking out into the countryside and eventually the shore. After sailing across the sea to Tallinn, Estonia, you’ll spend a day exploring the medieval city and biking through woodlands and beaches. Next up is St. Petersburg, Russia, where you’ll not only see the city by bike but also by kayak through its many canals (it’s not called the Venice of the North for nothing). Then, you're back on a boat bound for Helsinki, Finland, a city comprising more than 300 islands and plenty of bike paths that crisscross them. Finally, you’ll reach Sweden, first at the port city of Visby, where you’ll cycle along coastal routes, before concluding in Stockholm.

Bike Tours in Europe For Beginners

  • December 12, 2022

If you hail from somewhere other than Europe and are thinking of visiting at some stage in the future, it is well worthwhile considering travelling by bicycle.

For visitors to Europe, exploring by bike is the perfect way to really immerse yourself in the area. Travelling by bicycle allows you to experience so much that you miss out on by other means of transport – the smells, the sounds, the open air and the chance encounters, that that you simply do not experience from the seat of a train, bus or car. If you are able to cycle and are even slightly adventurous, then travelling by bicycle will add so much to your experience.

There are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of European bike tours to choose from. All over the continent of Europe there a multitude of destinations offering a vastly diverse range of landscapes, culture and history.

So where to begin? With so many destinations, it is worth considering a number of factors, before making up your mind.

How does a European Bike Tour Work?

There are two basic models that are used – self-guided bike tours and guided bike tours .

Self-guided bike tours

Accommodation

On a self-guided bike tour your accommodation will be booked for you. Normally you make your own way the the town or city where your bike tour begins. Bike tour companies will provide information on travel options, others will offer the option of airport pick-ups. The types of accommodation varies depending on what part of Europe you are cycling in and also whether you are in urban or rural areas. Often in urban areas larger hotels are used. In rural areas smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts are more frequently used. Hotels, guest houses and B&B’s will normally have bike storage space available.

Welcome Meetings

Almost all bike tour companies will arrange a meeting where a representative from the company will meet you. This is normally at your first hotel on the day you arrive or on the morning of your first cycle. The representative will explain how to follow the routes, give any advice necessary and answer any questions you have. You will also get assistance in setting up your bicycle. If you are using an e-bike you will receive instructions on how to operate the electric assist. A small number of companies will not have a person to person meeting but will have your bicycles, route notes, etc. delivered to your first accommodation. This however is much less common than a person to person meeting with a local representative.

Following The Routes

The routes you take are planned by the bike tour company. You will be given detailed directions on how to follow the route each day. In most cases a map holder is provided with your bicycle so that you can comfortably read the directions as you cycle. Increasingly, GPS is being used to follow the routes. If you use your own bike-mounted GPS device it is normally possible to have the routes emailed to you prior to your bike tour. Most bike tour companies will also furnish you will notes about the attractions, history, etc. of the area you are cycling in.

Luggage Transfers

As you bike from place to place your luggage will be moved from one hotel to the next, meaning that you only need to carry the daily essentials.

Emergency Support

The vast majority of European bike tour companies provided a back up service in case you run into difficulties of any kind.

Guided Bike Tours

A guided bike tour includes everything that the self-guided tour includes. In addition you are accompanied by a guide as you cycle. A support vehicle also accompanies your group in many guided bike tours. Your guide will lead the way and usually give you information about the sights and attractions you encounter.

The big advantage of a self-guided tour is the greater degree of flexibility. The advantage of a guided tour is the greater support along the way. The type of tour you choose is really up to you and your own personal preference.

Are European Destinations Safe For Cycling?

In general most of Europe is safe for cycling. This includes both what was traditionally known as Western Europe and also the former “Iron Curtain” countries of Eastern Europe. As a general rule, the more rural the area is, the less crime you can expect. Here in Ireland, the rural areas of the western half of the country have a very low crime rate. In the larger urban areas, however the crime rate is higher, where bike theft is particularly prevalent. This also holds true for much of Continental Europe. If you are in any doubt about the safety of a particular area it is best to do quite a bit of research before travelling there.

What Type Of Bike Infrastructure Will You Find In Europe?

Bike paths or dedicated cycling lanes and other cycling infrastructure make cycling much safer and more comfortable in any destination. The level of dedicated cycling infrastructure around Europe varies quite a lot from country to country, and also within countries. The Netherlands (Holland) is the ultimate example of a country with a superbly developed network of cycling paths. Within Holland it is possible to cycle all over the country without ever needing to share your space with vehicular traffic. Other countries like Denmark and parts of Germany are also very well developed. It is possible though, to have a safe and comfortable bike tour if the country you are visiting has a network of small roads. This is particularly true of Ireland, where a vast number of tiny roads with little to no traffic meander through the countryside. These are often roads where you are more likely to experience the real heart of the country, whether it is a farmer herding his sheep, or locals stopping by the roadside for a chat. This is also true for many other rural parts of Europe such as rural Italy, France and Greece.

As a general rule it is reasonably safe to assume that a cycling holiday company offering a tour in a particular part of Europe will only do so if it is safe to cycle there.

Is European Weather Suitable for Bike Touring?

In recent years much of Southern and Central Europe has experienced extreme heat in summer months, with 2022 being the hottest summer ever recorded. This has led to extended droughts and wildfires in many areas. Temperatures well in excess of 40 0 C are now normal in the summer months throughout southern Europe, while even Southern England experienced a temperature of 40 0 C (104 0 F) in July 22. If you are planning a European Bike Trip it is probably best to avoid these areas in peak summer months. In general Spring and Autumn are the best months for travelling to Southern Europe. The months of April and up to mid-May in Spring, and mid-September and October in the Autumn normally have temperatures that will be comfortable for cycling.

As you go further north you are less likely to encounter extreme heat. Ireland has a mild climate and rarely experiences extremes of temperature. It is very unusual for the temperature to reach 30 0 C (86 0 F) even on the hottest summer days. Typically the Summer temperatures vary from around 15 to 25 0 C (60 to 77 0 F). Depending on your chosen destination you may need to prepare for rain. Ireland, Britain, Scandanavia and northern continental Europe can all experience rain throughout the summer. Generally though in Summer months the rain tends to be confined to showers and simply bringing fold-up rain gear will allow you to experience the area in comfort. At earlier and later times of the season in Southern Europe you can also expect to have rain. However this might be a worthwhile trade-off in order to avoid the extreme Summer temperatures.

Do I need to speak the local language in order to do a European Bike Tour?

In the vast majority of cases the answer is no. Almost all cycling holiday companies provide guide notes, directions, etc. in English. Others provide these in a number of languages. Even if your tour company has everything you need in English it is still a good idea to learn a few phrases before you travel to another country. This can act as a great ice-breaker when you meet local people. It also demonstrates a level of respect for local language and culture.

What are the main attractions on a European Bike Tour?

Almost all destinations around Europe are worth visiting for a variety of reasons. Cycle over wild Irish bog-lands, visit medieval towns and cities in France, Spain, Italy or Portugal, taste the local wine, enjoy fresh Atlantic or Mediterranean seafood, stand at the edge of a cliff high above the waves, explore the canals of Belgium and Holland. These are just a few of the reasons why you might want to do a European Bike Tour. We could fill pages and pages talking about the variety of attractions. If we were to condense it into a few words we would probably simply say landscapes, seascapes, history, culture, food and people.

Do I need to bring my own bicycle on a European Bike Tour?

No! Although if you would prefer to do this, most companies will allow you to, and probably charge you a bit less if you do.

If you have never been on a bike tour before there is no need to wait. Europe is the perfect destination for a bike tour for beginners. If you do a European bike tour you will almost certainly find yourself coming back again and again. With so much to see and do a lifetime of adventure awaits.

Bicycle Touring Guide for Beginners: Everything You Need To Know

Cycling at Melk Abbey, Switzerland

The idea of planning and preparing for your first-ever bike tour might seem a little intimidating at first. I completely understand — I was very intimidated when I left for my first-ever tour ( from London to Istanbul ), but I quickly discovered that I needn’t have been worried!

In this bicycle touring guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know in order to plan and prepare for your first cycle tour, including how to choose a bike for touring, what gear you’ll need, how to budget, ideas on where to go, tips for life on the road and more.

I’ll also be responding to worries that novice cycle tourists often have, such as whether you need to be really fit and whether you need to know a lot about bikes in order to tour.

Let’s dive in!

What is bicycle touring?

Simply put, bicycle touring is travelling by bicycle.

It’s a type of adventure travel that combines cycling with backpacking. You’ll cycle for days, weeks, months or even years, with your luggage attached to your bike. In doing so, you are self-sufficient and your journey is self-powered.

Cycle touring vs bikepacking

The phrases “cycle touring” and “bikepacking” are often used interchangeably. Both refer to travelling by bike, but it’s the terrain and type of bike used that sets them apart.

Cycle touring is typically done on-road or along bike paths, using a touring, hybrid, or even a road bike.

Bikepacking refers to off-road adventures along dirt roads and/or in the mountains, on a bike with fatter tyres, such as a mountain or fat bike.

For the purpose of this guide, we will focus on cycle touring , but a lot of the information here will also be useful to those who are interested in bikepacking.

Why should you go on a bicycle tour?

There are few better ways to explore the world than by bicycle.

Most tourists will travel from hotspot to hotspot, but on a bike, you’ll get to uncover things that most people miss. You’ll really connect with your surroundings and notice the fine details of the region you’re travelling through.

In a car, you see so much yet experience so little. There’s no real connection to what’s just outside of your window; you’ll see but a timelapse of the world around you. On foot, you soak up each individual step, but with this comes confinement and small distances covered each day.

That’s where bicycle touring, for me, wins every time. On a bicycle, you’ll cover substantial distances, yet you’ll still be slow enough to really see and experience everything around you. If it’s raining, you’re soaked. If it’s hot, you’re sweating. There’s no AC to turn on, no roof over your head. Dirt, dust and insects will stick to your sweat-clad skin. You must grind up the hills, but then you’ll have the joy of coasting down them.

Not only this but bicycle touring is a cheap way and eco-friendly way to travel!

How to choose a bike for touring

Touring bikes are specifically designed for long-distance, weight-bearing cycling. They have a longer wheelbase than regular bikes, providing more stability and comfort while carrying a load, and have several attachment points for racks and bags.

When choosing a touring bike , think about the demands of your ride:

Duration : For short tours — perhaps a week or two — just about any bike will do. If you’re planning a longer trip, there’s a stronger case for using a higher quality bike that won’t fail under strain.

Location : If you are touring in a remote location, where access to bike repair is infrequent, it’s a good idea to invest in a quality bike that is unlikely to break down and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Terrain : If you’ll be sticking mostly to roads, you can really use any bike, although skinnier tyres will enable you to go faster. If you’re planning on going off-road and riding over dirt paths and mountainous terrain, you’ll want a bike with wide tyres and good suspension.

That being said, you don’t need  a touring bike. A nice bike is just that: nice but not essential. People have toured great distances on bikes that didn’t look up to the job. I cycled across Europe using a second-hand bike from a charity shop, and Thomas Stevens cycled the world on a penny-farthing in the 1800s!

Your budget needn’t hold you back . You really don’t need to splurge on an expensive new bike, unless you want to. As long as your bike has fitment points so you can attach a rack and panniers, decent gears and tyres and a comfortable saddle, there’s no reason why you can’t tour on it. Just keep in mind that long rides over challenging terrain may be a strain on your cheaper, older bike.

If you’re planning on a long tour over challenging terrain and want to invest in something designed for such an expedition, take a look at the following touring bikes:

  • Fuji Touring
  • Cube Touring Bike
  • Trek 520 Disc
  • Kona Sutra Adventure Road Bike
  • Ridgeback Panorama

What gear and equipment do you need for a bicycle tour?

At its heart, bike touring is all about minimalism and simplicity. The mantra of “it’s better to have it and not need it” is not the way to go. You need to be selective with what you bring as you’re the one who must grind the weight of your luggage up those hills!

Here is what I recommend you bring with you on your bicycle tour:

  • Panniers — I love these ones
  • Inner tubes
  • Tail lights
  • 2 cycling shorts
  • Non-cycling pants
  • Long sleeve layer
  • Jumper/fleece
  • Waterproof jacket
  • 5 pairs of underwear
  • 5 pairs of socks

Camping gear

  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping mat — I love this  Forclaz mat
  • Travel pillow
  • Gas cylinder
  • Portable stove
  • Plates/cutlery
  • Matches/lighter

Miscellaneous

  • Wallet and money
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Soap & shampoo
  • Toothbrush & paste
  • Hairbrush & hair ties
  • Travel towel
  • Battery packs

(A side note: you don’t need all of this stuff. You can pick and choose what would provide comfort and value to you during your tour.)

How do I carry all my gear?

Panniers are a type of bag that sit on your bike and store all your stuff. They’ll mount over your wheels, either at the front, back, or both. You’ll need to fit racks onto your bike, and then clip the panniers onto these racks.

Pannier racks

Choosing a pannier rack for your bicycle is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but strong racks are  essential  when preparing for a long-distance bicycle tour. You’ll be clipping your panniers and bike bags onto them so they need to be hard-wearing and capable of carrying your luggage.

Every bike is different and there are many variables to consider when choosing your racks:

  • Does your bike have disc brakes or rim brakes? Your rack might need extra clearance if you have disc brakes.
  • Does your bike have mounts to attach the back rack to, or will you need to use clips?
  • Does the rack give you plenty of heel clearance? Essential if you actually want to be able to pedal when the panniers are attached!

You’ll also want to consider the material your racks are made from:

  • Aluminium: very lightweight but less durable.
  • Chromoly: heavier than aluminium but durable and strong.
  • Steel: heavier than chromoly but very durable and can be welded if they break.
  • Titanium: lightweight but expensive.

Make sure to check your wheel size and dimensions to get the one best suited to your bike. If you don’t know much about bikes, I’d advise getting racks fitted at your local bicycle shop.

Panniers and bike bags

Panniers/bike bags are where you’re going to store all your gear, and they’ll clip onto your pannier racks.

Ortlieb  is one of the most popular panniers and bike bag brands as their bags are known for being waterproof and durable. That being said, Ortlieb isn’t the cheapest at ÂŁ100+. You certainly don’t need to fork out for Ortliebs, unless you want a really great pair that’ll last you a long time, but it’s worth getting good quality, waterproof panniers that will last.

If you’ll be camping on your tour, you’ll likely need front panniers as well as back panniers, as camping and cooking gear can take up a lot of space. If you’ll be staying in hotels or similar on your tour, you may well be able to get away with back panniers only. It all depends on how much gear you’ll be carrying!

I use these  back panniers from BTWIN  and they serve me very well. They’re waterproof, durable and have plenty of space.

I had some cheap front panniers which, quite frankly, sucked, and they broke quickly. This is why I advise investing in some good quality panniers.

Some great options for panniers include:

  • Ortlieb 20L Back Roller Classic
  • Arkel 22.5L Panniers
  • Thule Shield 25L Pannier Pair

How to pick a destination for your first bike trip

It seems that many people think that travelling by bike needs to be adventurous. Sure, there are particularly intrepid individuals out there who are enthused about navigating the steppes of Central Asia or sweating their way across the Sahara desert, but these are far and few between.

Bicycle touring can be thought of as a “cycling holiday” — you’re doing this to enjoy yourself, after all!

When deciding where to go for a bicycle tour, you’ll want to consider the following:

Time: Most of us can only take a short while out of work at a time, or have commitments that can’t be abandoned for too long. If you don’t have much time, why not start local? Just get out of your house and start cycling — a weekend tour can still be a great adventure! If you have two weeks or longer, you have a lot more choice on where to go.

Season: The weather can have a massive impact on how much you enjoy your tour. Choosing to cycle across Asia during the monsoon season or northern Canada during winter could be miserable.

Style: Does your chosen destination fit your cycling and travel style? Think about what you want to get out of your cycle tour, what sights you want to see and how comfortable you are cycling in remote places.

Experience: When planning a bike tour, you should use your previous riding experience to figure out how much distance and how much incline you’re capable of covering. For example, if you’re not in the best shape, touring the steep inclines of the Pyrenees might not be such a fun experience for you.

Ideas on where to go bicycle touring

Here are some great destination ideas for first-time bike tourers:

Western Europe

Many first-time bike tourers select Europe as their first adventure. It’s a great continent to cycle in: bike paths are decent, amenities are great and distances between cities and towns are much smaller than in other parts of the world. Not only this, but Europe is diverse with beautiful scenery and fascinating cultures, and is home to a great community of cycle tourists.

There’s a huge network of dedicated bicycle routes that span across Europe, known as the EuroVelo routes. These are perfect for first-time cycle tourists, as they make planning easy. Just pick a route and follow it!

I would say that Western Europe is more beginner-friendly than Eastern Europe, as (typically) bike paths are better maintained, infrastructure is more set up for cyclists and campsites are everywhere.

I personally cycled EuroVelo 6 one summer and had a fantastic time pedalling along rivers and visiting capital cities. If you’d like to cycle along the Mediterranean coast, taking in Spanish beaches, the canals of Venice, beautiful Croatia and more, have a look into EuroVelo 8.

If you’ve got a week for your cycle tour, Passau to Vienna is a great choice.

If you have 2-3 weeks, I would recommend following the Loire River in France (the Loire a Velo ), or the EuroVelo 15 , which follows the Rhine River through Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.

Cycle tourists in Negotin, Serbia

South Korea

The South Korean government has invested massively in cycling, meaning the country now has thousands of kilometres of dedicated bicycle paths. The most famous of their bike routes is the 4 Rivers Path , a 633 km-long path connecting the major Korean cities of Seoul and Busan. It’s an ideal option for a beginner’s bicycle tour.

If you want to see more of the country, you could even make up your own route, as South Korea has an excellent road network with many secondary roads that usually see little traffic.

Camping culture in South Korea is huge and there are lots of free campsites scattered everywhere, usually in scenic areas, such as by the beach or a lake. South Korea is also one of the safest countries in Asia, making it ideal for solo cyclists who might worry about cycling alone.

Japan is a dream destination for many, but many people are put off from visiting due to the high costs. However, there is a budget way to explore Japan, and this is — you guessed it — by bicycle touring.

Wild camping is legal in Japan, meaning you can pitch your tent for free as your travel around the country. Public baths are everywhere and cheap, meaning you can wash easily on the road, too.

Roads in Japan are generally well-maintained, aside from the occasional pothole. Long cycling paths are not as common as in South Korea, but it’s possible to cycle on minor roads, which are usually very beautiful and not too heavily trafficked.

Like South Korea, Japan is also incredibly safe, making it a great option for solo cyclists.

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a very popular destination for cycle tourists; it has a warm climate, there’s so much to see and do, and it’s very budget-friendly . It’s feasible for you to eat out every day and stay in guesthouses, rather than camp and cook your own meals. With this in mind, you could think of Southeast Asia as a luxury destination for touring!

The landscapes are spectacular in this part of the world. You could cycle down the coast of Vietnam, tour through peaceful Laos or pedal along the mighty Mekong River.

Cycling in Vang Vieng, Laos

How to budget for a bicycle tour

One of the perks of cycle touring is that it’s typically cheaper than your average getaway. Your cooking and camping gear have you covered for food and accommodation, and your bicycle is your transport.

That being said, your daily bicycle touring costs will vary massively depending on your touring style and which part of the world you’re in.

Cycle touring is doable on any budget, but if you’re cycling on a shoestring, it may require a strong sense of adventure and the will to adapt to some discomfort.

If you choose to wild camp, cook your own meals and skip paid attractions, you could potentially tour on a mere $5-10 per day.

On the other hand, you could easily burn through over $100 a day if you choose to eat out and stay in hotels while touring expensive places like West Europe, North America and Australia.

Most tourers’ daily budget falls somewhere in the middle. For example, I prefer to tour by staying at campsites and cooking my own meals. This way, I always have a place to pitch my tent with access to toilet and shower facilities. I also allow myself some luxuries, such as the occasional meal out, fancy coffee from cafes, and some paid attractions. Touring this way, I spent roughly €30 per day while cycling across Europe.

If you’re someone who doesn’t want to camp but is worried about the costs of staying in hotels, consider touring somewhere like Southeast Asia, where accommodation and eating out are super cheap. You could expect to pay roughly $20-30 per day in Southeast Asia by eating delicious street food and staying in budget guesthouses.

As well as your daily touring costs of food, accommodation etc, you’ll want to factor in potential bike repairs and kit replacements. Leave yourself a buffer, in case a hole rips into your tent or your bike needs professional repair.

Finding bike-friendly accommodation

Unless you’re planning a short trip, it’s not practical to plan accommodation in advance. Weather, equipment, your energy levels and other factors can all influence the distance you cover each day. You might also find an unexpectedly nice town and want to spend some time there. With this in mind, it’s best to remain as flexible as possible when it comes to where you lay your head at night.

Campgrounds

Campgrounds offer a safe place to pitch your tent, along with a toilet and shower, and usually WiFi and electrical outlets, too. They’ll even sometimes have laundry facilities, cooking stations and more. Campgrounds can be a great place to stay at a really reasonable price.

In Europe, Australia and New Zealand, you’ll find that campgrounds are everywhere and usually good value for money. In Japan and South Korea, there are many free campgrounds where you can stay.

Watch out for privately-run campsites in the US, as they can charge a lot of money for a small patch of grass. They usually prioritise RVs and may even turn cyclists away!

You won’t really find campgrounds in developing countries, such as in the Middle East or South Asia.

Camping along the Danube in Germany

Sometimes you just need a break from camping! Hostels are generally the cheapest way to get a bed for the night, if you don’t mind sharing a room with other people. They’re most commonly found in cities or larger tourist towns — it’s unlikely you’ll find hostels in super rural areas.

In expensive places, such as West Europe or Australia, hostels can be as low as $10, although they’re usually closer to $20. In cheaper places, like Southeast Asia, they can be as low as $4 per night (yes, really)!

If you’re touring in places like Western Europe, the USA or Australia, then nothing will blow your budget faster than staying in hotels. However, if you’re sick or have been riding in bad weather for a few days, a hotel room with an actual bed and a private bathroom can be a real morale booster.

If you do stay in hotels, make sure there is somewhere secure to lock your bike up. Cycle tourists are not usually well catered for at hotels — I had to lock my bike to the fence in a hotel garden in Austria as there was nowhere else to put it.

In continental Europe, you might spot a type of hotel called a pension . Pensions are usually much more budget-friendly than a full-scale hotel and are more like a guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Pensions near bike paths in Germany and Austria often have signs outside to let cyclists know their bikes are welcome: “Radfahrer Wilkommen.”

In less expensive places, such as India or Southeast Asia, it’s affordable to stay in budget hotels every night.

Wild camping

Wild camping is a great way to save money and enjoy nature. It also offers complete flexibility, as you can pitch your tent just about anywhere — a real lifesaver in areas where tourism isn’t common.

You’ll want to find a secluded spot if you choose to wild camp, away from roads and out of sight of people.

Bear in mind that wild camping is prohibited in many countries, although many cyclists do it anyway and don’t get caught. Most people have a relatively relaxed attitude to wild campers, and so may or may not ask you to move on if you’re caught. Just make sure to be discrete: find a secluded spot, wait until dusk to set up camp and be gone by early morning.

If you’re new to wild camping, it’s normal to have some worries at first. I used to be afraid that an unpleasant stranger would come by or the police would show up to ask me to move on. However, as long as you remain hidden and are discrete, it’s unlikely you’ll encounter any problems.

WarmShowers

If you’re not familiar, Warm Showers is a free worldwide hospitality exchange for touring cyclists. It’s a fantastic community — cyclists offer to host other cyclists for a night. You’ll be given a place to sleep and a shower, but it’s likely you’ll also be given food and a beer. Warm Showers states that they have hosts in over 160 countries!

Unconventional options

Churches, police stations, gas stations, farmer’s fields and more are often viable options when looking for somewhere to spend the night. It depends on the country and the laws they have on camping, but in many places, people will be happy to help cyclists and provide somewhere for them to pitch their tent.

People across the world are hospitable and kind — particularly when they see a weary-looking cyclist with lots of gear strapped to their bike!

As an example, myself and two other cyclists pitched our tents next to a gas station in Turkey one night. The security guard gave us coffee and snacks, and a passing farmer even gifted us some watermelon and tomatoes.

Free camping in Turkey

Overcoming worries and doubts

If you’ve never been on a cycle tour, you may feel overwhelmed and have doubts about whether you’re capable or not.

Let me tell you: if I can do it, then so can you. With no touring experience, little knowledge of bike mechanics and a not-so-great level of fitness, I cycled from London to Istanbul over the course of 3 months.

I am not particularly brave or strong-willed. I just took it one day at a time.

What if I know NOTHING about bike mechanics?

Don’t worry! I didn’t know much about bike mechanics before committing to my first 3-month cycle tour.

That being said, it would be extremely helpful to know a few basics in case of a breakdown. At a minimum, you should know how to pump your tyres and how to repair a flat tyre.

If you really do know nothing about bike repair, it would be wise to choose a destination where you’re not going to become stuck if your bike breaks down. A popular route like the western part of EuroVelo 6 is dotted with bike repair shops, as well as other bike tourists who would probably be happy to help if you’re in a tough spot.

How do I train for a bicycle tour? Do I need to be really fit?

As the saying goes, “train for the tour or let the tour train you.”

You do not need to be really fit. Training can be done on the road, as long as you’re willing to take things slowly at first. You don’t need to cover massive distances each day if you don’t want to, and no one will judge you if you need to get off your bike and push sometimes.

Ignore the self-important types who think you’re not a proper cyclist just because you only cycled 30km and pushed your bike up that hill.

That being said, having good fitness will make your bike tour much more enjoyable.

Try to cycle 3 or 4 times a week, including one whole day of cycling over varied terrain. This will help to improve your fitness, as well as prepare your body for long days in the saddle.

I’m still not sure if bicycle touring is for me…

If you’re nervous about committing to a big tour, why not have a practice run? You could head out somewhere local one morning, camp that night and then head home the next day. This will give you a feel of what bicycle touring is like.

Alternatively, there are companies such as Spice Roads , Grasshopper Adventures and Bike Adventures that offer fully supported, guided cycle tours. All the logistics will be taken care of for you, so you can enjoy cycling without worrying about getting lost or finding places to stay. This is also a great option if you simply don’t feel comfortable touring on your own due to safety concerns.

What’s the best travel insurance for a bicycle tour?

It’s harder than you would expect to find a decent travel insurance policy that covers bicycle touring. And, unfortunately, most policies that do cover bicycle touring do not cover damage to or theft of your bike.

If you’re a UK resident, Adventures Insurance is probably the best option.

As the name would suggest, they specialise in insurance for more adventurous pursuits — including cycle touring. They cover personal liability and medical expenses while cycle touring, and even allow equipment up to £1,000 to be covered, with a single item limit of £600. However, the maximum duration of your cycle tour must be 3 months.

If you’re not a UK resident or will be touring for longer than 3 months on one continent , I would recommend World Nomads , whom I personally use for most backpacking and general long-term trips.

You can read World Nomads’ policy on cycling-related travel  h e re , but here are the basics:

  • Cycle touring is covered but the tour must be on one continent only — no cover is available for intercontinental cycle touring.
  • You’ll need to tick  ‘cycling / biking – independent cycle touring’  when buying your policy. This is an optional extra, so be sure to select it.

Tips for life on the road

1) Take every opportunity to refill your water bottles.

2) Drink before you are thirsty and eat before you are hungry.

3) Carrying your own toilet roll is  essential.  Trust me.

4) Double-check your camping spot before you head off for the day. Cycling back for something you’ve forgotten is the worst!

5) Especially for longer tours, build in a luxury day every so often. A nice hotel room and a warm bath are so welcome after weeks of camping.

6) Be sure to take rest days and make time for sightseeing.

7) Be conservative with the mileage at first; no amount of training can adequately train you for hours in the saddle day after day.

8) Find the little roads. They’re usually much nicer to cycle on than the more direct but busier roads.

9) Stock cubes can add flavour to almost anything and are great to mix into a perhaps otherwise flavourless camp meal.

10) Be prepared to get dirty! Sweat + sunscreen + cycling is an unpleasant combination. Tiny insects and layers of dust/dirt will stick to your skin.

11) Learn the mistakes drivers make, and assume everyone is going to make them every time.

12) Numbness in any part of your body should be treated as a warning sign that something needs to change in your bike fit or cycling posture. Numbness can lead to serious problems and should be treated seriously.

13) It’s not a race. Who cares if you only cycle 10km a day? As long as you’re enjoying yourself, that’s all that matters. As Jimmy Buffett said, “go fast enough to get there but slow enough to see.”

14) A lot of the challenges are mental. The going can get tough at times, but the pros of touring have always outweighed the cons for me.

15) The most important bike touring tip of all:  have fun!

Top 10 European cycling destinations (and the tours to take!) for 2022

There will always be the typical perennial tour favorites: travelers take Tuscany and the Danube River by storm every year.

But if you’re the kind of person who loves to travel by bike, you’re anything but typical. Keep Italy and the Danube on your bucket list, and add a few more special spots that have all the beauty, but don’t always get the glory.

Check out BikeTours.com top ten picks for European cycling destinations in 2022  (and some tours to take for each!) .

The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea glittering in all shades of blue, the mountainous landscape of Cephalonia and the bird-sanctuary island of Lefkas, the small island of Paxos densely covered in olive groves – all guarantee a wonderfully relaxing tour.

12 Unforgettable Vacations That Are Best Done by Bike — Even for Beginner Cyclists

Discover these epic bicycle tours from Croatia to Chile.

bike tours in europe for beginners

There’s no better way to see the world than on two wheels.

You don’t have to be a Tour de France rider to enjoy a long, scenic cycle, either. Everywhere in the world — from the United States to France to Japan — you’ll find excellent bike tours that cater to beginners.

Cycling has been a favorite pastime for people around the globe since the 19th century. The bicycle was invented by Karl Freiherr von Drais in Germany; it was a rather cumbersome “running machine” that didn’t involve pedals, steering, or brakes. When the “modern” safety bicycle was invented by John Kemp Starley in England, it allowed for a free, stable ride — and just like that, cycling started to become a beloved hobby.

Today, along with hiking, mountain climbing, and camping, cycling is one of the most popular outdoor activities for travelers. There are many excellent biking destinations that are perfect for cyclists young and old, experienced and inexperienced. You can take a ride through the mountains in Switzerland or even hop from island to island in the Philippines, Japan, or Croatia with your bike in tow. Ahead, find beautiful biking destinations to plan your vacation around.

Puglia, Italy

In Puglia there are numerous bike tours where you can set your own pace based on your cycling experience and trip type. There’s truly something for everyone — from beginners to advanced cyclists. Give yourself about 10 days to cycle as much of the heel of Italy's boot as possible, patching together an epic route out of country roads and uncongested coastal trails. Along the way, you'll pass through villages, along olive orchards, and by UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many cyclists start among the historic surrounds of Sassi di Matera and pedal towards the coast.

Burgundy and Champagne, France

Sign us up for a trip that involves some easy-going cycling, then rewarded with delicious wine. This region of France is famous for its grapes and cuisine, but it’s also a wonderful place to take in the fresh air and pedal your way through the countryside. Paved and dirt cycle paths cut through sprawling vineyards from Reims, aka "the gateway to Champagne. They wind across Épernay and to the start of the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne, which will lead you into the heart of Burgundy. Go ahead and stop at a few vineyards to sample wines along the way; it’s highly encouraged.

Connemara, Ireland

You can see the best of the Emerald Isle by taking one of the many guided or self-guided bike tours in this western region of Ireland. The Connemara Lazy Days tour is particularly popular for beginner cyclists who want a good ride without too much effort. The route loops around part of the Renvyle peninsula, the scenic moorlands and heather-cloaked hills of the Inagh Valley, and fishing villages, typically starting and ending in Clifden, a market town on the coast. The tour entails traveling short distances by bike while enjoying the region’s culture and attractions.

Land’s End, United Kingdom

Cycling from Land’s End in Cornwall, England, to John o’ Groats in Scotland is a classic ride that’s probably for a slightly more experienced rider but makes for an excellent trip nonetheless. This scenic, 1,000-mile trip typically takes between two and three weeks and you’ll see some of the very best United Kingdom vistas along the way. Highlights of the journey include cycling through the beautiful Cheddar Gorge (birthplace of the cheese), numerous castles and abbeys, and city stops in Bristol, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

Lake Constance, Austria

You can actually start a bicycle tour around Lake Constance from either Austria, Germany, or Switzerland, depending on your preference. This massive lake isn’t just beautiful, but it also makes for a highly customizable ride. You can break up the trip into challenging long rides or several short days with stops in the many beautiful lakeside towns. This route, comprised of both paved cycle paths and quiet roads, is easy and flat. You'll get epic mountain views, though, thanks to its proximity to the Alps.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

If you’re not into going long distances, try an island-hopping cycling tour where you pedal across the land, then take a boat to the next isle to do it all again. Start in Split or Dubrovnik and pedal your way through the old cities, then hop over to Hvar, Brač, or Korčula. Croatia also has the 100-mile Ćiro trail that connects the country and nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina, if you’re looking for more of a challenge.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

If you’re looking for a cyclist’s paradise, look no further than Amsterdam. The bike-friendly city has always been welcoming to car-free living, so even the most inexperienced of cyclists can get around easily on two wheels. Of course, since many locals commute by bike, be sure to stay out of the way if you’re in the mood for a slow, scenic ride. Or, better yet, take a guided tour with a local who will take you for a drink at the pub and show you museums along the way.

Colchagua Valley, Chile

Cycling and wine tasting isn’t just for the French. This beautiful region of Chile is also famous for its wines and is an excellent spot for cyclists to take a leisurely, scenic ride with stops for vino along the way. Depending on the kind of vacation you want, you can opt for a more active bike ride or plan for a few short stints that allow for extra wine tasting. There are a few different routes you can take out into the grapevine-covered countryside, mostly following roads, but Santa Cruz is a good place to start no matter which way you go.

Palisade, Colorado

If you haven’t been to the Fruit and Wine Byway , now’s your chance to start planning a trip. The beautiful, 25-mile East Orchard Mesa Loop, one of three planned routes along the byway, through Colorado’s little-known wine country and peach groves might be the best late-summer excursion any cyclist could plan. Travel through the fragrant orchards and lavender fields and breeze along the legendary Colorado River, stopping frequently at tasting rooms on the route.

Travelers Rest, South Carolina

Travelers Rest is becoming a go-to place for cycling enthusiasts to visit (and to live). The Blue Ridge Mountains offer the perfect challenge for advanced bike lovers, but there are also some short and relatively flat trails that are simple enough for even the novice rider to enjoy. There are dozens of routes to pick from, from multi-use greenways to bike-friendly roads that will put you in the vicinity of vineyards, boutique hotels, quaint towns, and lots of cultural points of interest.

Onomichi, Japan

Starting in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, you can take the path of the Shimanami Kaidō (also known as the Nishiseto Expressway), which connects the city with Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. This 40-mile road in western Japan traverses ocean straits on colossal bridges that connect some of the Geiyo Islands. It was built with cyclists in mind, thanks to segregated cycling and pedestrian lanes.

Visayas Islands, The Philippines

The islands of Cebu, Bohol, Negros, Guimaras, and Panay are all easy places to use two-wheeled transportation to see some incredible sights. Bike tours along the coastlines are some of the area’s most popular excursions, especially since the roads are paved and fairly flat. For the full tour, island hop by ferry with your bike in tow.

What people love about Bike and Barge Tours in Europe

The boat and crew were fantastic. Accommodations on board were very nice. Bike routes kept the cyclist off the main roads and scenery was very nice. Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. I would recommend this tour for those folks who like flat easy riding and not having to pack and repack each day.
Great experience. Caring crew who looked after me when I caught a head cold.
My first bike and barge trip, it was a wonderful experience! Well planned. The crew was great, clearly working together well. Nice to see. Irene's dinners were as good as any following restaurant meals in Avignon and Paris. Yum! Sorry I didn't take pictures of her delicious dishes before eating them. Two criticisms - as another woman observed, there should have been two tour guides, with one riding sweep. That responsibility shouldn't be left to us. Also, the A/C in my cabin was way too cold. Overall, it was tremendous! Looking forward to the next one; hope so anyway! Thanks..

Epic Road Rides

16 of the best European cycling routes

Finding the best cycling routes in Europe can be tricky. There are so many to choose from that it can be quite overwhelming.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of what are, in our opinion, the best long distance cycling routes Europe has to offer.

We hope it will help you narrow down where you might want to travel next on your bike if you want to cycle across Europe. All the routes we’ve selected are:

  • in Europe, excluding the UK
  • long-distance, which means they will take multiple days to ride
  • possible on a road or gravel bike (you may prefer a gravel bike for comfort/flexibility and the option to fit panniers)

So read on and decide where your bike will take you next.

Read these article for info on preparing for long rides and training for long rides.

This article includes details of products and/or services that we have used ourselves or which we would consider using. Some are paid features or include affiliate links where if you click on a link and make a booking or buy something, we may earn a commission. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Please read our disclosure policy for further information.

All metrics in this article are approximate.

In the interests of complete transparency, we haven’t (yet!) cycled all of the routes/events in this article. If you have ridden any of these, let us know in the comments below!

France cycling routes

London to paris cycle route.

  • Distance: London, England and Paris, France
  • Start/finish: 470 kilometres
  • Surface: Road and greenways

The London to Paris bike ride is an iconic ride – one of the true epic bike rides of Europe. There are many different ways to ride this route, but one of the best-known is the Avenue Verte. Beginning in London, it takes in the sights as you head south towards the coast, where a ferry shuttles you across the Channel. From there, you ride through quiet towns into the bustling capital of France, Paris.

Although you can use a road bike on this route, we’d recommend fitting some wide tyres to deal with the greenways, as you may encounter some gravel.  You can also do this route in reverse, for the Paris to London bike ride. While not the longest, it’s still one of the best cycle touring routes Europe can offer.

Veloscenic cycle route

  • Distance: 450 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Paris, France and Mont St-Michel, France

The Veloscenic cycle route is one of the best cycling routes in France, with its easy riding and long stretches of greenways.

It’s perfect for those looking to see the sights often missed on other French cycling routes, including the Eiffel Tower and the Bay of the Mont St-Michel.

The route is ideal for laid-back family cycling holidays in Europe.  It’s well signposted and has plenty of accommodation along the route called Accueil VĂŠlo. In English, this means ‘cyclists welcome’. If you’re keen on finding good cycling routes in France for all abilities, then the Veloscenic route is certainly one to read up on. If you want the best flat cycle routes in Europe, this is one to consider – it’s not completely flat, but it’s very gentle.

Route des Grandes Alpes

  • Distance: 710 kilometers
  • Start/finish: Geneva, Switzerland to Nice, France
  • Surface: Road

The Route des Grandes Alpes is a really tough route and certainly earns its position on our list of the best cycle routes in Europe.

Beginning in Geneva, before heading south to Nice, riders take in the panoramic views of some of the most famous cycling routes (and climbs) in the world.

Over 18 mountain passes and a leg-straining 17,000 metres of climbing, this is not a route for the faint-hearted.

There are tour companies who specialise in taking the hassle out of these trips so you can focus on riding the best long distance bicycle routes and soaking in the glorious alpine views.

It’s a brilliant chance to tick off some of those bucket list cols you might not otherwise get the chance to ride, and really put your climbing legs to the test. But don’t forget to bring some extra gearing! You can’t tackle the best bicycle routes in Europe without being properly prepared, after all.

Read out in-depth  guide to the Route des Grandes Alpes for more information.

Trans Pyrenees

  • Distance: 1,100 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Llançà, Spain and San Sebastian, Spain

The Trans Pyrenees is one of the most well-known and best cycling routes Europe has to offer. If you want epic bike rides in Europe, look no further!

Most people create a route from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean coast and ride it as a supported or self-supported ride. The statistics above are based on the route described in our article on the Trans Pyrenees ( here ).

Lost Dot, the same company that runs the Transcontinental race, also runs an event in the region. Riders are given checkpoints and parcours to ride rather than a set route. This gives riders the freedom to test their navigation and route plotting skills on top of the already massive challenge in front of them.

These great long distance cycling routes in Europe are fantastic challenges for hardcore cyclists who want to experience bikepacking and being self-sufficient on the bike across some of the prettiest (and most challenging) landscapes on the continent.

Find out more about the Trans Pyrenees  here .

Belgium and Netherlands cycling routes

Flanders cycle loop, belgium.

  • Distance: 952 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Nieuwpoort, Belgium (circular)

Belgium is steeped in cycling history and provides some of the best cycling Europe has to offer. The country is home to professional heroes such as Eddy Merckx and Lotte Kopecky, and also some of the toughest cobbled climbs and harshest terrain there is.

The Flanders cycle loop takes in a long loop of Belgium, exploring each corner of Flanders. It’s 952 kilometres long and has 5,155 metres of climbing on offer. The key thing about this route is enjoying your surroundings.

Belgium offers some of the best bike rides in Europe, and this route demonstrates why – taking in some of the picturesque towns and cities and undulating routes around the Flanders region. The country is also great for flatter Europe bike routes, but this route shows there are still plenty of climbing challenges available, too.

Our article on planning a cycling holiday in Belgium and our guide to cycling Flanders should be useful.

Zuider Zee route, Netherlands

  • Distance: 440 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Enkhuizen, Netherlands (circular)
  • Surface: Road and cycle paths

One of the most popular Europe cycling routes is the Zuiderzee (otherwise known as the Ijsselmeer Tour) in the Netherlands. It traverses around the Ijsselmeer lake, which was created after the closing of the south sea (Zuiderzee) by a dam. The dam is part of the route and is 37 kilometres long!

The Netherlands is well known for its bike-friendly culture. The Zuiderzee route combines their official cycle routes, LF21, LF22 and LF23 to create one of the best long-distance cycle routes Europe has to offer. It is quite flat and is great for beginners if you don’t want to ride the full route.

Spain and Portugal cycling routes

Camino de santiago cycle route, spain.

  • Distance: 930 kilometres (based on the most popular route, known as the ‘French Way’)
  • Start/finish: Orreaga-Roncesvalles, Spain and Santiago de Compostela
  • Surface: Road and gravel

Cycling the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James as it’s also known, is a less traditional way of approaching this pilgrimage. Typically, hikers adorn the trails, but we think cycling is a much more time-efficient and enjoyable way to do it.

There are five main Camino de Santiago cycling routes to choose from, all varying in starting place and thus length. But, whichever one you choose, you’ll be riding one of the most historic cycle routes Europe has to offer.

To get your Compostela, or your accreditation to certify you have completed the Camino de Santiago by bike, you need to ride at least 200km of this long distance cycle route.

Given that the terrain is split between gravel and road, the best bike for the Camino de Santiago is either a wide tyre gravel/touring bike or a lightweight mountain bike. With proper preparation and choosing the right time of year, this is easily one of the best cycle trips in Europe.

Read our in-depth guide to planning a bike tour on the Camino de Santiago and this article sharing our Camino de Santiago FAQs.

N2 road, Portugal

  • Distance: 739 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Chaves, Portugal and Faro, Portugal

The N2 road in Portugal isn’t just one of the most well known known Portugal cycling routes, it’s also becoming one of the best European cycle routes full stop.

Beginning in Chaves in the North, riders travel 739-kilometres south over undulating terrain and through stunning scenery to reach Faro.

While many people immediately look further east when planning their Europe bicycle routes, don’t overlook Portugal, which is home to some of the best bike trails in Europe overall.

If you’d like to know more about these bike tour routes, read our new article about the N2 road here and discover one of the best European cycling routes. Our guide on cycling the Algarve might also be useful.

Italy and Slovenia cycling routes

Via francigena cycle route, italy.

  • Distance: 1,030 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Great Saint Bernardo Pass, Switzerland and Roma, Italy
  • Surface: Road and unpaved

The Via Francigena bike route is steeped in history and is one of the best known long distance cycling routes in Italy.

It begins on the Swiss-Italian border and travels south towards Rome, taking in both asphalt and off-road terrain. Following the route is relatively simple, with the places to cycle carefully mapped throughout Italy with blue and white signs.

There are a few ways to tackle this route, including one of the EuroVelo routes. It’s recognised under the EuroVelo route 5 banner and begins in Canterbury, England, before heading across Europe to Rome. It is based on a historic 3,000-kilometre journey taken by Sigeric the Serious to meet the Pope in 990AD and has resulted in one of the best long distance cycle routes Europe offers.

Tour of Slovenia’s Julian Alps

  • Distance: 324 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Neblo, Slovenia and Bohinjska Bistrica

The Julian Alps are some of Slovenia’s best-kept secrets. On this loop, you’ll ride 324 kilometres of challenging terrain and beautiful scenery.

The Tour of the Julian Alps is one of many Slovenia cycling routes that provide jaw-dropping views. It may not be the longest distance, but the rewarding landscapes make it one of the best bike routes Europe has tucked away – a true hidden gem.

For GPX files and more in-depth detail, read our guide to cycling in Slovenia here .

Multi-country European cycling routes

EuroVelo cycling routes are an indispensable resource for finding biking routes in Europe; they have worked over many years to create a dense network of routes for cycling across Europe.

One of the great things about the EuroVelo cycling routes is that they are well signposted and easily followed to help ensure you have a successful trip cycling through Europe.

Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route

  • Distance: 4,450 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Nantes, France and Constanța, Romania

The Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route, EuroVelo 6, is among the most scenic cycling routes Europe has.

It travels from western France all the way across Europe to the city of Constanța in Romania . It takes in beautiful countryside like the Loire Valley in France and historic cities like Vienna and Budapest, making it one of the most popular EuroVelo routes there is.

It’s not for the faint-hearted as it’s 4,450 kilometres in length, but the reward is knowing you’ve cycled one of the best cycle routes Europe has to offer – and a contender for best EuroVelo route too.

Check out our guide to cycling the Loire Valley.

Rhine cycle route

  • Distance: 1,500 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Andermatt, Switzerland and Rotterdam, Netherlands

The Rhine cycle route is part of EuroVelo route 15.

Beginning in Andermatt, Switzerland, riders get to see the Rhine from ‘source to sea’ firsthand.

From Lake Toma in Switzerland, the route takes you north, along the Rhine River, through France, past Lake Constance in Germany and all the way to the Rhine Delta at the North Sea in the Netherlands.

While it’s not quite as popular a bike route as some of the others listed here, cycling the Rhine is special as you get to travel with the water. It’s suitable for road bikes and covers a distance of 1,500 kilometres. All the while, riders take in plenty of culture and picturesque surroundings.  As with other EuroVelo road biking routes, it’s well signposted and easy to follow.

Danube cycle path

  • Distance: 1,200 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Donaueschingen, Germany and Budapest, Hungary
  • Surface: Road and cycle path

The Danube cycle path is a very popular route, with scenic riverside views and leisurely towpath riding.

Beginning in Donaueschingen, riders follow the Danube river, passing through Germany and Austria before eventually reaching the capital of Hungary, Budapest.

If you’re into your adventure cycling routes, it’s good to know that this cycle path is well-maintained and allows riders to create their own itineraries by visiting towns and places just off the route. Places where riders can stop and rent pergolas, for example, are just part of the charm.

The river continues all the way to Romania, where it becomes part of the Black Sea, but the paths past the Budapest point are not as well developed for cycling. Up to that point though, it’s one of the best bike rides Europe offers alongside one of its longest rivers.

There’s more information on the Romanian section of the Danube in this guide to cycling Romania.

Moselle cycle route

  • Distance: 512 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Bussang, France and Koblenz, Germany
  • Surface: Off-road but mainly well-paved cycle tracks

One of many bicycle routes in Europe that follows a river is the Moselle cycle route. It’s 512 kilometres in length and begins in the Vosges mountains in France before heading north through Germany.

The route is entirely on cycle paths which are, for the most part, well-paved. This means a hybrid or road bike with wide tyres will be more than sufficient for this trip.

The infrastructure improves significantly once you reach Metz, the industrial capital of northeastern France. There is plenty to see and do along this route, and it’s quite easy going so you won’t be too tired to head out sightseeing after your ride.

Baltic Sea Cycle/Iron Curtain Trail

  • Distance: 9,214 kilometres (Baltic Sea Route) and 10,000 kilometres (Iron Curtain Trail)
  • Start/finish: Turku, Finland and Kirkenes, Norway (Baltic Sea Route)/Rezovo, Bulgaria (Iron Curtain Trail)
  • Surface: Cycle path and road

The Baltic Sea Cycle and Iron Curtain Trails are part of the renowned EuroVelo cycling routes, which incorporate some of the best long distance bike rides across Europe. The EuroVelo routes connect Europe by bike through a network of long distance routes and are perfect for testing the legs over multiple days.

The Baltic Sea Cycle route is referenced as EuroVelo 10, and the Iron Curtain Trail is known as EuroVelo 13. The southern section of the Baltic Sea Cycle follows the same waypoints as the Iron Curtain Trail. They both travel through Estonia, Latvia and more, following the coast of the Baltic Sea, until the routes reach Germany. From there, the Iron Curtain Trail heads south, and the Baltic Sea Cycle heads north to continue following the Baltic Sea shoreline.

Partially drawn up to remember the history of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, the European Union has supported the growth and development of these bike tour routes not only to raise awareness but to support less popular regions with tourists.

Both the Baltic Sea Cycle and the Iron Curtain Trail can be ridden either as single long distance cycle rides or as smaller chunks to cater to more abilities and time frames. They’re ideal for those who enjoy a variety of landscapes and cultural exploration on their bicycles.

Hi Georges, thanks for this, I have just sent you an email. Best wishes, Clare

Hello! My husband and I live in Alaska and would like to do a cycling trip in Europe. We have spent a few weeks in Switzerland years ago and loved it. We are also interested in Italy – Dolomites and Tuscany rolling hills/wine country. We are currently experiencing research and decision fatigue and not sure if we should have a base hotel/bnb and shuttle to the different areas or pay the large amount for an organized tour. We aren’t sure which tour companies are reputable. We would probably prefer a self guided, with some support, type of trip. That would give us flexibility. We were looking into this October but then realized that some tours are already sold out. We do not do well in heat so Sept. would probably not work for us. Thank you so much for any direction you can give us! K

Hi there, have just dropped you an email! (Do check your spam folder if it hasn’t arrived in your inbox already…)

Just wanted to recommend the N2 route in Portugal, which 11 of us self supported riders completed 7 days ago. Chapeau for featuring the N2 here 👏

Thanks Adrian! So glad to hear you had a great time!

The best destinations for bike tours in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

The beauty of starting a bike tour in your home country is that you don’t have to take a flight and you can decide how far you want to ride. Along the Elbe bicycle route, for instance, you can ride specific sections of the route, such as Magdeburg to Hamburg or Dresden to Prague. This makes planning easier and is perfect for those with less experience or a smaller budget for their summer vacation . Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite bike tours in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Germany: Berlin to Copenhagen

Germany: munich to lake garda, austria: vienna to budapest, austria: graz to maribor.

  • Switzerland: Andermatt to Konstanz
  • Duration: 9 days
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Highlights: The Berlin Wall Trail and the ferry crossing to Denmark

Fun fact: Copenhagen is just 650 kilometers from Berlin. Although this route is long, it’s also easy thanks to the flat geography of northern Germany. The ferry from Rostock to Gedser also lets you knock a few kilometers off the total trip. The Mecklenburg Lake District offers pure relaxation, while Denmark’s impressive bridges will get your heart going – the wind is strong when you’re high above the waves. If you'd like to extend your trip a little, the Swedish city of Malmö is just 40 minutes away from Copenhagen by train.

  • Duration: 8 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Highlights: Ötzi the Iceman at the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology in Bolzano and Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento

From the Isar River across ice-age glaciers to the crystal-clear Lake Garda, this tour is themed around water — in all its forms. Not only that, it takes you through three countries. On this 375-kilometer route, you’ll traverse the Alps, biking through the Tyrolean Inn valley toward Brixen and Bolzano through to Riva del Garda, a picturesque town on Lake Garda. Some of the more challenging sections, such as the Brenner Pass climb, can be tackled by bus or by train.

  • Duration: 7–8 days
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Highlights: Ĺ˝itnĂ˝ ostrov, the Roman fort Celamantia and Esztergom Basilica

The Danube bicycle route is approximately 275 kilometers long and leads you along the blue Danube from Vienna to Budapest, via Bratislava. The route will take you through riparian woodlands and to UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites and idyllic villages such as Szentendre, Hungary. For fans of nature and history, it’s the perfect bicycling vacation. You can plan your bicycling trip yourself or book it as a complete package including hotel and luggage service for less than €600, depending on what kind of offers you find.

  • Duration: 3–5 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: Steirisches Vulkanland and Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia

On this 234-kilometer circular bicycling route, you’ll ride through some of the most beautiful wine regions that Austria and Slovenia have to offer. Plus, enjoy wonderful sights, from Graz’s Old Town to the banks of the Drava River. Be ready for some steep climbs around Jeruzalem! If your legs are a little too sore when you reach Maribor, you can take the train back to Graz in about an hour and for less than €10.

Switzerland: Andermatt to Konstanz

  • Duration: 5–6 days
  • Difficulty: Very challenging
  • Highlights: Chur Old Town and the Rhine Delta

The entire Rhine Cycle Route stretches from the Swiss village of Andermatt to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It’s no surprise, then, that the 1,500-kilometer route is split into stages. The first stage, from Andermatt to Konstanz, goes through the Swiss Alps and reaches heights of 2,044 meters, so bicycling expertise and plenty of stamina are a must! The effort is certainly worth it though: Once you complete the tour, you can enjoy a boat trip on Lake Constance or take it easy on the beach.

The best destinations for bike tours in Europe

There are few things to plan before getting onto your bike. Choosing a destination can actually be one of the biggest challenges. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our recommendations for the best countries and routes for your bicycling vacation.

Croatia: Split to Dubrovnik

France: champagne , belgium: bruges to amsterdam, italy: pisa to rome, greece: athens and the peloponnese .

  • Highlights: The islands of Hvar and Korčula

With its varied architecture, olive groves, and historical cities, Croatia is a relaxing and picturesque destination for your bicycling trip. The Adriatic Sea is perfect for swimming, and rugged cliffs offer awe-inspiring views. On the Dalmatian Coast, wineries, fishing villages, and medieval sites are waiting to be explored.

  • Duration: 6 days
  • Highlights: Routes along the Marne River and the MoĂŤt & Chandon wine cellars

It should come as no surprise that France is one of the most popular travel destinations for gourmands and wine connoisseurs. Here, you can ride from one winery to the next, passing lavender fields and stopping off in one of many picturesque cafÊs.

Fans of extreme bike tours will love the L’Étape du Tour, a one-day event where amateur cyclists attempt one of the Tour de France’s mountain stages.

  • Highlights: Kinderdijk with its 19 majestic windmills

Bike tours in Belgium are particularly well suited to beginners or families with children – and for good reason. The landscape is almost entirely flat, and the country’s infrastructure is extremely bike-friendly.

Take a detour to the Netherlands to check another destination off your bucket list. The country’s bicycling network features a junction number system and is more than 32,000 kilometers long. Discover historical towns, old churches, breweries, and the beauty of the Dutch coast.

  • Duration: 7–9 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
  • Highlights: The Via Francigena and the medieval city of Montalcino

If you’re looking for a European destination for your bike tour, then you should definitely consider Italy. The country’s diverse geography means that you can choose between beaches, lakes, mountains, and ancient cities — or some of each.

You can also discover part of the Via Francigena, a long pilgrimage route leading from the English city of Canterbury over the Swiss border and toward Rome.

  • Highlights: Poros and the Aegean Sea

Don’t be put off by the summer heat — Greece is worth exploring by bike. This bike tour will take you to sites of the ancient world and wondrous sandy beaches that are perfect for cooling off in the sea.

Take a few days to explore the capital city of Athens before continuing on to the Peloponnese, where bicycle routes snake past the historical sites of Mycenae and Sparta.

How to plan a bike tour in Europe

When it comes to planning a successful bike tour, planning and preparation are crucial. The questions below should help you get ready for your trip:

Do I want to do a guided bike tour or an individual one?

The first thing you should think about is whether you prefer to go on a guided tour or go solo.

Individual tours let you set your own pace and take your time to do some sightseeing. It will just be you, and you should be comfortable discovering new places on your own.

Guided tours, on the other hand, are better if you want to be in a group and have a local tour guide. You’ll have a little less flexibility, but you’ll be able to socialize more easily.

Will I be taking my own bike or will I rent one?

The choice of renting a bike or bringing your own depends on various factors such as logistics, costs, and personal preferences. Many guided tours include bike rental in the package.

If you want to take your bike with you on a flight, you need a specially sized box or bag. There are also certain providers, such as Pamyra , who can organize transportation for you for a fee.

If you prefer to save yourself the transportation expense and rent a bike, do some research on local providers to compare prices and availability.

What should I bring on a bike tour?

The next step is to organize the basic equipment for your bike tour. This checklist will see you safely on your way:

  • Bicycle luggage rack
  • Handlebar bag
  • Rain protection
  • Front and rear lights
  • Reflective vest
  • Bicycle lock
  • Bicycle repair kit
  • Bicycle bags, including refillable water bottles

It’s common for a transporter service to be provided on guided tours. This means that there’s always someone to call on in case you get a flat tire.

Before booking a tour, you should always check what is and isn’t included. You can find a comprehensive bike tour checklist on the ADFC website.

How to plan a bicycling vacation with the family

It’s time to swap the screens for fresh air and nature! A bicycling vacation is a great way to get your kids outside and to spend time together as a family. Vacations abroad also give even young kids a taste of foreign languages, cuisine, and cultures.

If you’re planning your first family bicycling vacation, make sure to choose easy terrain and shorter routes. Don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time for breaks and a variety of different stops. If you want a challenge but other members of your family don’t, you can organize e-bikes for those who are less enthusiastic about cycling. That way, you can all tackle those trickier routes together.

And don’t forget about travel insurance . Having the right travel health insurance will take a lot of the potential stress out of a family vacation.

How to plan a bicycling vacation in a group

Group bicycling vacations are great for getting together with your friends or meeting new people who share your interests. There’s something for everyone, too: Tours are offered all over Europe, so you can get to know your companions better over regional delicacies and a glass of wine after a day’s ride.

There are various websites that let you enter specific information and destinations to find the right trip options for you. We recommend the route planner Komoot , which also has an app for when you’re out on the road.

Do I need insurance for a bicycling vacation?

It’s always worth having bike insurance in Europe if you’re using your own bike. It’s frustrating enough if your bike gets stolen, damaged, or lost. But if you’re left covering the costs, then it can really ruin your perfect bicycling vacation.

Not sure where to get bike insurance? N26 Insurance lets you protect what’s important to you. Simply open the N26 app, go to the Explore tab, and choose the insurance that’s right for you.

How do I plan a bike tour overseas?

Choosing your destination is one of the most important parts of organizing a bike tour. Be sure to pick a trip that will match your/your group’s abilities. It’s also a good idea to choose somewhere that you’re keen to explore. Next, try and get in some cycling prep before you leave so you build up your stamina for the real deal. Finally, set a budget and savings goal , so you can pay for the trip you want without any stress.

How do I plan a day bike trip?

A day trip is a great way to squeeze in some cycling time, or to introduce the hobby to friends or members of your family. Try googling “cycle routes near me” for inspiration—and make sure the length and terrain of the route is suitable for everyone joining you. Don’t forget to plan stops for snacks, toilet breaks, and lookout spots to take in any views. Circular routes are convenient to minimize taxis or public transport. Finally, check the weather, as you’ll want to make sure you have suitable clothing.

How far should I cycle daily on a bike tour?

The right daily distance for your bike tour will depend on your fitness and how often you cycle. While you might want to take on a challenge, you don’t want to injure yourself and not be able to enjoy the vacation. It’s a smart idea to do several shorter days during your bike tour, rather than just a few longer days. The average cyclist should be able to take on about 60km a day. If you’re more experienced, you could try a bit further and build up from there.

How should I train for a cycling holiday?

To make sure you’re ready for the physical challenges of a bike tour, it’s best to start training early. Regular, manageable cycling sessions are best. If you can get into the great outdoors, that will help prepare you for the real thing. If that’s not an option, a stationary bike at home or at the gym is still helpful. Don’t forget to stretch and add rest days to give you time to recover. Make a note of the distances you cover and try to add a little more each week, until you reach your target.

European Summer Bike Tours for the Adventurous Traveler

T here’s something about bike rides that just exudes the essence of summer in my opinion. Your hair blowing in the wind, the sun warming your back, gliding through scenic landscapes. It’s just you, your two wheels, and the breathtaking landscape surrounding you. And what better way to explore Europe than by bike? A summer bike tour in Europe is a dream come true for the adventurous traveler. And honestly, it’s not too hard to understand why. Because Europe offers some of the most diverse and breathtaking cycling routes in the world. So, let’s explore the best European summer bike tours for the adventurous traveler.

The Loire Valley (France)

Let’s start with an absolutely dreamy option – the heart of France . Here lies the Loire Valley, often referred to as the "Garden of France." The Loire à Vélo trail winds its way through a landscape straight out of a fairytale. Picture yourself riding past elegant châteaux nestled among lush vineyards and along scenic riverbanks. The route spans over 500 miles, but don’t worry, it’s a great option even for beginners. This will be a leisurely ride through some of France’s most renowned landscapes.

You can start your journey at the awe-inspiring Château de Chambord, where you can lose yourself in the grandeur of its Renaissance architecture. As you continue, the town of Amboise invites you to visit the final resting place of Leonardo da Vinci . The path meanders to Saumur, where you can savor some of the finest wines in the region. Finally, the medieval city of Angers marks a fitting end to your tour. What a magical summer that would be!

The Amalfi Coast (Italy)

For those seeking a thrill, the Amalfi Coast in Italy offers a bike tour that combines breathtaking beauty with exhilarating challenges. You could begin your journey in the iconic village of Positano. The view of the turquoise sea and pastel-colored houses will be motivation enough. As you pedal along the rugged coastline, the road winds through steep cliffs and offers stunning sea views at every turn. Next, take your adventure to the historic town of Amalfi. This gorgeous place allows you to take a break and soak in the maritime atmosphere.

The path climbs to Ravello, a hilltop town famed for its stunning gardens and panoramic vistas. Finally, you descend to Sorrento, where the scent of lemon groves fills the air and the views of the Bay of Naples provide a perfect ending to your ride. The Amalfi Coast route is not for the faint of heart, with its steep climbs and winding roads, but the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.

The North Sea Cycle Route (Netherlands)

The Netherlands is famous for its gorgeous bike tours. And the North Sea Cycle Route offers a flat and scenic ride perfect for all levels of cyclists. Start your journey in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government, where you can explore the vibrancy of Dutch city life before heading to the coast. The route runs along the Dutch coastline, part of the longer EuroVelo 12, which spans seven countries. Make sure to also pedal through Scheveningen, a bustling beach resort town. This is one of the best places to experience Dutch seaside culture. Finally, make sure you also explore the picturesque island of Texel. You’ll be able to witness abundant wildlife and just recharge from your lengthy journey.

LYON, France (AP) — Tour de France favorites Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic hit the ground at high speed after getting caught up in a massive crash Thursday at the Criterium du Dauphine race that led organizers to neutralize the stage.

Evenepoel, a two-time world champion from Belgium, and Roglic were both able to get back to their feet before organizers decided that the stage wouldn’t count. Evenepoel leads the general standings ahead his Slovenian rival, the Olympic gold medalist.

Evenepoel’s Soudal Quick-Step team later posted a picture of the Belgian rider, with the caption “Remco is home” alongside an icon of a flexed biceps.

Evenepoel told reporters after the race he escaped without fractures.

“It was like bowling,” he said. “From the left side there was a bike that came under my back wheel. As I was breaking I just went, like a front flip, and landed on my head and my shoulder. It was a pretty big bang.”

Evenepoel returned to competition at the Criterium. He needed surgery earlier this season after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade during a race in Spain .

“I fell on my shoulder again and I think it’s bleeding so we have to see what that will say. We’ll have to see tonight but in the end, everything felt quite all right,” he added. “Everybody was fighting for position for the descent like always. It was the last tricky part of the course so it was going well for us all day in the front. And then some guys started to slide just in front of me.”

Roglic’s Bora–Hansgrohe team said all of its riders got back on their bikes to reach the finish in the town of Saint-Priest. Roglic said he was not sure whether he would keep on racing this week.

“The only thing is, I crashed on my shoulder, that is not the best, that I had surgery on a couple of years ago,” he said. “We really need to check it and be sure in what kind of state it is.”

Dutch cyclist Steven Kruijswijk went into the race ambulance after the crash. Organizers said his teammate Dylan van Baarle was also hurt, apparently suffering from a shoulder injury.

The riders who went down rode at high speed when the accident took place in a downhill on a wet road with about 21 kilometers left of Stage 5.

Organizers said they decided to neutralize the stage — meaning the times won’t count toward the overall standings — because of a shortage of ambulances.

“The race is neutralized, there will not be times taken at the finish and no winner in this stage,” organizers said.

The Criterium du Dauphine is a warm-up event for the Tour de France, which starts on June 29.
