2. Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib – For Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Another one of the beautiful places to visit in Bidar Karnataka is the Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib. Dedicated to the 1st Sikh Guru Nanak Dev Ji, this Gurudwara was constructed in the year 1948 and now is an important pilgrimage site in Bidar. 3. Mahmud Gawan Madarsa – Timeless Ruins

Mahmud Gawan Madarsa, located in the old part of the city Bidar is the remains of a building that was once a theological college and is one of the beautiful tourist places in Bidar . Constructed by a Persian merchant named Khwaza Mahmud Gawan in 1472, this madrasa is one of the top places to visit in Bidar. This building is built over 3-levels with 100feet minarets in four corners is enriched with calligraphy in Thuluth script, intricate tile work and inscribed with verses from the Holy Quran.

Earlier, this madrasa featured a mosque, library, lecture halls, a laboratory, and a library where 3000 Persian books were kept. Also, there were 36 rooms for students and 6 suites for the teaching staff.

Dedicated to the lion god Narasimha, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, this shrine is one of the most famous places to visit in Bidar. Also called as the Narasimha Zarna Cave temple or Jharani Narasimha Temple, this cave temple is excavated in a 300m tunnel under the Manichoola hill range. Bahamani Tombs is a cluster of 12 tombs of Bahmani Sultans in the same compounds. 12. Tarkash Mahal – An Impeccable Structure

Situated on the southern side of Lal Bagh Gardens, Tarkash Mahal was originally constructed for the wife of a Bahmani sultan who was Turkish. It was built back in the 14th-15th century. The upper portions of this part of the fort were built during the rule of Baridi. One can witness the ancient craftsmanship from a historic era. In the present days, there is no access to the inner parts of the structure by virtue of its ruined condition. At a distance of 116 km from Gulbarga, 639 km Bangalore and 140 km from Hyderabad, Bidar is a town and district headquarters located in the north-eastern part of Karnataka. Bidar is one of the most popular tourist places to visit near Hyderabad and one of the famous Hyderabad weekend getaways from a two day trip. It is lies at an altitude of 2,200 feet on Deccan plateau overlooking the Manjira river valley. Bidar is among the well known Karnataka tourist places . It is bounded by Nizamabad and Medak districts of Telangana on the eastern side, Latur and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra on the western side, Nanded district of Maharashtra on the northern side and Gulbarga district on southern side. Bidar has great historical importance and it is one of the important heritage sites in Karnataka. The history of Bidar goes back to 3rd century BC, and it was ruled by Mauryas, Satavahanas, Kadambas and Chalukyas of Badami, Rashtrakutas and later Kalyani Chalukyas. For a short period after Kalyani Chalukyas Bidar was under the Yadavas of Devgiri and Kakatiyas of Warangal . Delhi rulers first headed by Allauddin Khilji and later Muhammed-bin-Tughluq took control of entire Deccan including Bidar. In the middle of the 14th century, the Deccan region disintegrated and formed the Bahmani Sultanate in 1347 AD under the rule of Bahman Shah. The Bahamani kingdom shifted their kingdom from Gulbarga to Bidar in the year 1429. In 1430, Ahmed Shah Wali Bahmani took steps to develop the city of Bidar and its fort was rebuilt. After break up of Bahamani Kingdom in 1527 AD, the city became capital of Barid Shahis who ruled up to 1619 AD. In the mid 17th century, when Aurangzeb conquered Deccan, Bidar became part of the Mughal Empire. The Nizam rulers of Hyderabad took over Bidar in the early part of the 18th century. It became part of the unified Mysore state in 1956, when all the states were reorganized on the basis of language. Bidar has a number of historical monuments dating back to 15th century. These monuments reflect the glory of the Bahamani rulers. The main tourist attraction of Bidar is the Fort, which was built by Ahmad Shah in 1430. The Rangin Mahal, Solah Kambh Masjid, Gagan Mahal, Diwan-e-Am, Royal Pavilion, Tarkash Mahal are other important places to be seen within the fort. Tombs of Bahmani Rulers, Tombs of the Barid Shahis, Madrassa of Mahmud Gawan, Chaubara, Guru Nank Basavakalyan, Humnabad, Narasimha Jharniand papnash temple are the other attractions in Bidar. The historical town of Bidar is located in the north eastern part of the Indian state of Karnataka. Bidar was the erstwhile capital of the Bahmani dynasty in the beginning of the 1428. With the shift of power, Bidar went on to become the capital of the Barid Shahi kingdom. A tour to Bidar Karnataka is a walk through history-paved lanes; it is the historical lineage of Bidar that comprises of the major chunk of tourist attractions in Bidar and the majority of the places of tourist attractions in Bidar.

What To See on a Tour to Bidar in India:

1. The Bidar Fort:- The fort at Bidar can be traced back to the fifteenth century and was built by Ahmad Wali Shah. The fort has five grand imposing entrances and at the center of the fort is an old city with monuments and structures that date back to the Bahmani era palace.

Within the Rangin Mahal one can find some exquisite artwork and wall carvings that reflect the excellent craftsmanship and mastery of the craftsmen of the period. Other important attractions within the Bidar fort are the Gagan Mahal, Diwan-e-Aam (hall of publice hearings), Royal Pavilion and the Takhat Mahal. The Solah Kambh Masjid within the fort is the oldest Muslim construction in Bidar.

2. Tombs of the Bahmani Rulers:- Ashtur, a place about 3 km away from Bidar has some of the tombs of the Bahmani rulers. These tombs boast of their impressive structures and beautiful tile works and mosaics. While one of the tombs has superb tile work and flaunt Persian frescos like in the tombs of Ahmad Shah I and his son Alauddin Shah I; the others have exquisite work in stone.

3. Guru Nanak Jhira:- This is an ancient Gurudwara (a Sikh worship place) and demands a compulsory visit on Bidar tours.

4. Madrassa:- The Madrassa is a theological college of Arabic and Islamic theological studies and dates back to the fifteenth century. A major portion of the college is now in ruins but the elegant façade is still erect.

The remnants of this magnificent 15th-century fort, the largest in South India – and once the administrative capital of much of the region – constitute Bidar's most famous historic site. Surrounded by a triple moat hewn out of solid red rock and many kilometres of defensive walls, the fort has a fairy-tale entrance that twists in an elaborate chicane through three gateways. Bidar Fort once had 37 bastions, several wells and a vast magazine. Reckon on a couple of hours to explore it properly.

Information at the site is minimal, so consider hiring a guide (who can unlock the most interesting ruins within the fort) from the archaeological office next to the museum. Highlights include the Rangin Mahal (Painted Palace), with elaborate tile work, teak pillars and panels with mother-of-pearl inlay, Solah Khamba Mosque (Sixteen-Pillared Mosque), and Tarkash Mahal , with exquisite Islamic inscriptions and wonderful rooftop views. There’s a small museum in the former royal bath with local artefacts.

Bidar Fort: Amongst the most formidable forts of the country, it is situated in the eastern part of the town and has within it ruins of palaces, mosques and other buildings which had been built of trap rock. Stone and mortar were used to build the fort-walls. The fort is entered from the south-east by a zigzag passage protected by three gateways. The entrance gate has a lofty dome, the interior of which had been painted in bright colours.

History of Bidar : Bidar was the capital of Bahmani Kingdom in the 14 th century. Thisfort was built by Ahmad Shah Wali Bahman. The Fort was renovated in the 15th century by Sultan Ahmad Shah-I as he shifted his capital from Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) to Bidar.

• 37 bastions (Balcony like structures extending from the fort) of octagonal shape with metal shielded cannons

Note : During summer peak temperatures in Bidar may reach upwards of 40 degree Celsius. Plan your visit with adequate water, an umbrella for cover and sunscreen.

How to reach Bidar: Bidąr Fort is 700 kms from Bengaluru. Recently opened Bidar Airport is the closest airport (11 kms from Bidąr Fort) which has once a day flight from Bengaluru. Hyderabad airport is the next best option, 150 kms from Bidar. Bidar city railway station is 3 kms from the Fort. Buses and trains are available from Bengaluru to reach Bidar.

Karanja Dam

karanja Irrigation Project is located near Byalhalli village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district across Karanja River, a tributary of river Manjra, in Godavari basin. It has Canals on both right and left banks. Total length of RBC is 131 km and that of LBC is 31 km. The project envisages irrigation to an area of 29227 hectare (CCA) in Bhalki and Bidar taluks from its two canals on right and left banks and foreshore and offshore lift irrigation schems.

Papnash Shiva Temple at Bidar
