Best of Turkey

15 days | get to know a turkish way of life, from coast to city.

ERSI_Turkey_Cappadocia_ballooning

Get your Turkish delights on a 15-day adventure in Istanbul. This trip is a mix of ancient ruins and modern cities, Islamic mysticism and Ottoman influence, inland discoveries and coastal cruising, and everything in between! Discover Gallipoli on a guided tour that will teach you about its significance during the First World War, unlock the secrets of the ancient city of Ephesus, admire Oludeniz’s Blue Lagoon from high up on the ancient Lycian Way and swim in the Mediterranean on a traditional gulet cruise from Kas. From the winding laneways of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar to the bizarre landscapes of Cappadocia, take the plunge and discover a new way of experiencing Turkey.

Trip overview

  • Discover the ancient and modern lives within Turkey as you explore thousands of years of history in the remarkable ruins of Ephesus, discover a WWI battlefield in Gallipoli, and immerse yourself in the vibrant vibe of the university town Eskesihir.
  • Take in the dizzying diversity of this epic landscape with a visit to the stunning natural hot springs of Pamukkale, a cruise along the picture-perfect Turkish coast over Sunken Cities, and an optional hot-air balloon ride over the fairy-tale land of Cappadocia.
  • Get to know the friendly locals with a fruit wine tasting in the serene village of Sirince and a home-cooked dinner at a local cave home in Cappadocia, then get treated to a Turkish BBQ feast by your local hosts in Kayakoy and get your hands dirty making ci borek – a popular local snack.
  • Pull on your walking shoes and set out on a half-day trek along a section of rugged coastline, following part of the ancient walking trail of the Lycian Way and exploring the exotic landscape of Cappadocia on a short hike in the valley.
  • Get among local life, from taking local buses and trains to enjoying a traditional gulet (boat) trip and staying in one of the cave hotels that Cappadocia is famed for.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, CYDD (Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği). Donations help them provide scholarships and educational programs for economically disadvantaged youth in Turkey.
  • This trip uses a combination of public and private transport, and all vehicles are modern and have air-conditioning and most are fitted with seat belts. Some journeys can be long in order to maximise the areas visited, but this gives you a chance to interact with the local community and see more of the country. You'll also be pleasantly surprised to find most Turkish buses have wi-fi and serve coffee and cake! Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the bus, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find specifics under ‘Packing’ in the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section.

Hoş geldin! Welcome to Turkey. Your adventure kicks off in Istanbul – the continent-straddling metropolis that the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have all called home. There’s a welcome meeting at 1 pm, where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After, maybe get out and explore the frenetic streets of Turkey's crown-jewel metropolis. Your group leader will take you on a walking tour of the nearby neighbourhoods so you can get your bearings on what’s around. Later, why not gather together your new pals and seek out some Turkish cuisine in a street-side cafe.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Istanbul - Orientation Walk
  • Istanbul - Topkapi Palace Combined Ticket (Topkapi Palace + Hagia Irene + Harem) - TRY1500
  • Istanbul - Turkish Hamam (inc. massage) - EUR100
  • Istanbul - Hagia Sophia - EUR25

If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If you have extra time in Istanbul, you may consider purchasing the Istanbul Museum Pass, which cost 2500TRY. The pass is valid for 5 days and includes 13 museums. Please be aware that some of the most popular ones like Dolmabahce Palace, Basilica Cistern and Galata Tower are not included by the pass though. Topkapi Palace is also closed on Tuesdays so please plan your visit accordingly. please check this website for more details of the validity of the pass https://muze.gen.tr/MuseumPasses

After breakfast this morning, hit the road to Canakkale – a port city on the southern shore of the Dardanelles. You’ll stop along the way to explore Gallipoli on a guided tour that will teach you about the significant events and history embedded in this area. Your guide will take you to ANZAC Cove and major memorial sites like Brighton Beach and ANZAC commemorative Site. You’ll also take in the views across the Dardanelles Strait and the Gallipoli Peninsula. This evening, we’ll spend the night in Canakkale with free time to grab dinner and get ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

  • Gallipoli - Fully guided Gallipoli tour & visit to the Commonwealth graveyards

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

This morning, drive to Selcuk with a stop in Troy – where history and mythology sit side-by-side. You’ll wander the ancient city walls with your leader and even get a chance to enjoy a photo op with a replica Trojan Horse. You’ll learn more about how this place has confounded historians and archaeologists, before continuing on to Selcuk, which will be your base for exploring the nearby ruins of Ephesus tomorrow. After arrival in the town, on the slopes of Ayasoluk Hill lie several historical buildings – you’ll follow your leader on an orientation walk, passing Isa Bey Mosque and the imposing Byzantine citadel of the Grand Fortress. Just below the fortress are the ruins of the Basilica of St John, built by Justinian I in the sixth century. A short distance out of Selcuk is one of the ancient world's Seven Wonders – the Temple of Artemis – although, sadly, only a single column (of 127 originally) remains. It was destroyed in AD401, after being successively damaged by floods, a Greek arsonist seeking notoriety, and the Goths. You’ll arrive in Selcuk with enough time to check in to the guesthouse and then take a leader-led orientation walk around town.

  • Selcuk - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Troy - Archaeological site visit
  • Selcuk - Basilica of St John - EUR6

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours. Please note that Isa Bey Mosque is under renovation now, so you won't be able to visit it.

This morning, take a private minivan to visit the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus – one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman classical cities in the world. Once the capital city of Roman Asia Minor, the city has a fascinating history, which really comes alive with a local guide to enhance your experience. Considering their age, the ruins are in incredible shape, and it’s not difficult to imagine them in their full glory over 2000 years ago, equipped with running water, public toilets, a medical institute, and Roman baths. The theatre is well preserved and regularly hosts concerts, but it's perhaps the magnificent library that is the most striking. This afternoon, drive out to the nearby picturesque village of Sirince and taste some locally produced fruit wines. This authentic Greek Ottoman village seems to have been overlooked by modern development and the unique local architecture nestled in the hills make for a photographer's dream.

  • Ephesus - Archaeological site visit
  • Sirince - Village visit and fruit wine tasting
  • Selcuk - Ephesus Archaeological Museum - EUR10
  • Selcuk - Meryemana (Mary's House) - EUR15
  • Ephesus - Terrace Houses entry - EUR15

A train ride inland through mountainous landscapes brings you to one of Turkey's most photographed sites – Pamukkale – which literally translates to ‘cotton castle’. Here, natural hot springs with a high calcium content cascade over the edge of the cliffs, leaving the earth bright white, hence the ‘cotton’. Though you won't be able to bathe in these travertines, you can wade through them, and these pools are said to have many healing properties. Take some time to visit the nearby ancient city of Hierapolis and have a dip in what used to be Cleopatra’s old pool. You can also check out the other ruins of the city – Hierapolis is known for its abundance of temples and religious structures, vast necropolis, amphitheatre and strange tombs.

  • Pamukkale - Hierapolis and Travertines National Park
  • Pamukkale - Hierapolis Museum - Free
  • Pamukkale - Cleopatra Ancient Pool - TRY200

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Take a bus ride south – off the tourist trail – to the village of Kayakoy. This small town acts as your base for exploring the Mediterranean coast, including the resort town of Fethiye and the renowned Blue Lagoon. Kayakoy was once a thriving place and now it’s considered a ghost village, as its ancient stone houses were abandoned after their Greek inhabitants left Turkey during the great population exchange of the 1920s. Now protected by the Turkish government, it provides the opportunity to see an untouched, traditional Turkish town in quite an eerie location. One church in the lower area of the village, Kataponagia, is of particular interest due to an interesting room out the back – it was used to collect the bones of the dead. Pay to wander the ruins, enjoy the solitude, or simply chill out with a game of backgammon and sip tea with the locals.

  • Kayakoy - Village visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

Today, set out on a half-day trek along a section of rugged coastline, following part of the ancient walking trail of the Lycian Way to nearby Oludeniz, where you can swim in the Blue Lagoon. You’ll walk up a steep rocky path up the hillside, make your way through forest, and then up a hill with fantastic views out across the Mediterranean. At the final descent into Oludeniz, you’ll be greeted with a breathtaking view of an arching peninsula of white sand beach separating the crystal waters from its lush banks and the town’s trademark panorama. The myriad hues of colour between the waters and pine-forested hills is a sight to behold, and you’ll soon realise why this is one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey. This evening, join your hosts for a Turkish barbecue dinner, relaxing in their garden and enjoying some delicious local food and lively company.

  • Lycian Way - Hike from Kayakoy to Oludeniz Beach
  • Kayakoy - Home-cooked Turkish BBQ dinner

Your trekking distance today will be approximately 6 km.

The trek to Oludeniz is rated moderate to difficult, and a good level of fitness is required. The terrain under foot is sometimes slippery and uneven and there are periods of ascent and descent. Good walking shoes are certainly required. If you do have a good level of fitness, this will be an enjoyable and rewarding walk. If you are unsure as to your capability to complete this walk, please discuss with your group leader before undertaking so that other transport arrangements can be made. Fires over the last few years have caused several temporary closures of sections of the Lycian Way at very short notice. Should this occur a different activity will be arranged.

Make your way the short distance from Kayakoy to Fethiye by dolmus – a Turkish shared taxi. From there, take a public bus to Kas or Kekova, with some spectacular coastal scenery along the way. The picturesque village of Kas – whitewashed buildings covered in bougainvillea and cobbled streets – is the southernmost of all the Turkish resorts. The best places in town to swim are from the waterfront restaurants that have their own private water access. For the price of an occasional drink, you get your own deck chair, umbrella and unbeatable views. When the sun goes down there is the chance to explore the handicraft markets, where you can find beautiful handmade wares with a distinctly Turkish flavour.

  • Hotel/Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Kas - Leader led orientation walk
  • Kas - Handicraft market

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Depending on the season, you’ll stay either in Kas or Kekova for these two nights. Kekova is a smaller village, away from the tourist crowds for you to enjoy the sun and salt by the Mediterranean Sea. But in colder months, you’ll stay in Kas, where there will be a bit more happening and more things to explore.

Today, head to the shimmering turquoise waters on your gutlet and enjoy a day of fun, swimming, sun bathing and cruising over the ancient Sunken cities, with your lunch included on board. Disembark in the late afternoon and transfer back to your accommodation.

  • Kekova - Turkish Coast Cruising & Sunken Cities

This morning, take a private bus inland towards Konya. While it’s a long day of travel, the scenery will keep you entertained as you cross the Toros Mountain range. The city is closely linked with the whirling dervish sect of Islam developed by Celaleddin Rumi – one of Islam's greatest Sufi mystics. Mevlana – ‘our master’ – as he came to be known, believed that music and dance could induce a state of love and divine union, and so devised the whirling sema ritual. In town, you can visit the original Tekke of Mevlana, which holds many relics and is also the final resting place for Rumi. Get your bearings on an orientation walk to Aladdin Hill in Konya’s centre. On the side of the hill are the sheltered remains of the palace of the Seljuk Sultans of Rum, while beneath the Alaettin Mosque are artefacts dating back to the Stone Age. Tonight, perhaps enjoy a refreshing tea or try some central Anatolian cuisine.

  • Konya - Mevlana Museum
  • Konya - Karatay Museum - EUR3

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

Leave Konya this morning by bus and head to The Cappadocian town of Urgup – with a vibrant, modern downtown area, plenty of boutique hotels built into the surrounding caves, it’s perfectly positioned to springboard you into your Cappadocia explorations tomorrow. The surrounding areas are honeycombed with caves scooped out to make churches and dwellings that are known as fairy chimneys and castles. In times of peace, the people in this region lived on the land, but in times of war or persecution they took to living underground. This is a fascinating place, get prepared see some incredible stuff! Follow your leader on an orientation walk on arrival. This evening, you’ll get to settle in and enjoy a special stay in a cave hotel – accommodation that is specific to this area. Don't forget to pack sturdy walking shoes or boots and a comfortable daypack for exploring the valleys of Cappadocia.

  • Cappadocia - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Goreme - Whirling dervish performance - EUR30

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

This morning is an ideal time to discover Cappadocia’s unique landscapes from above – in a hot air balloon! Although this activity isn’t included, it's a highly recommended experience that most travellers opt for to see the wondrous desert scenes at sunrise. This afternoon, take a walk through one of the nearby valleys with your group leader. It could be the Valley of Love where the fairy chimneys, deserted rock cut homes, and churches with frescoes will astound you, or any of the other fantastic scenic routes that your leader knows. There’ll also be some time this afternoon to visit the Open Air in Goreme if you wish. It’s a monastic complex composed of churches, rectories and dwellings, and one of the earliest centres for religious education. There are at least 10 churches and chapels in the museum area, dating between AD900 and 1200, each one named after a prominent attribute by the local villagers, who were exploring these caves long before there was an entrance fee. This evening you’ll be warmly welcomed into a local cave home. The family will prepare a special home-cooked dinner for your group. Sit down to a feast made with passion, enjoy a friendly chat with your affable host and perhaps top off the night with some Turkish delight.

  • Cappadocia - Dinner at Local Family Home
  • Goreme - Valley walk
  • Cappadocia - Hot Air Balloon Deluxe Flight - EUR330
  • Cappadocia - Hot Air Balloon Regular Flight - EUR260
  • Goreme - Open Air Museum - EUR20
  • Goreme - Underground city - EUR13

Hot air balloon in Cappadocia can be booked directly with your trip leader. Please speak to your group leader on Day 1 in your trip to secure a spot for this popular activity.

Due to local regulations, sunrise hot air balloon excursion times do vary which may result in your excursion beginning just after sunrise. This is subject to the tour provider’s discretion and is not within our control.

Occassionaly Nuray is unable to accommodate our groups due to family commitments. In that case we will visit Oznur and her family for a home-cooked meal. They relocated to Hatay after losing their homes in the devastating earthquake of 2023. Our visit helps a local family rebuild their lives.

Say goodbye to the fairytale Cappadocia and head to Eskisehir this morning. A fascinating city, often known as the ‘students’ city by the locals, is a change of scene, and you can expect a refreshing and vibrant vibe. Arrive in the afternoon and visit Eskişehir Odunpazarı Village, where you'll dig into a ci borek lunch (a type of layered pancake) after a cooking demonstration at a local restaurant run by local women. This is the most popular snack in Eskisehir and you’ll see what all the fuss is about when you taste some! After, wander the quaint and colourful houses nearby with your leader. Enjoy some free time later this afternoon, where you may like to take a gondola ride along the Porsuk River to get a glimpse into why they call this the Venice of Turkey.

  • Eskisehir - Odunpazarı Village Visit
  • Eskisehir - Ci Börek making & tasting

After breakfast this morning, depart on a fast train bound for Istanbul. The afternoon and evening is yours to enjoy at leisure. This glorious city is a gorgeous spot to toast to a great adventure and your leader will be able to recommend the best places to visit and eat, depending on your interests. Tonight, why not toast to newfound friends and an epic adventure with an optional dinner.

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 to 3 hours.

With no activities planned for today, your Turkish adventure comes to an end after breakfast. If you wish to spend a few more days checking out the sights of Istanbul, just speak to your booking agent.

Experience the natural beauty of Portugal by joining one of the 10 Best Portugal Tour Operators , creating unforgettable memories.

The best time to visit Turkey is during the spring and fall seasons. This time of the year will have you experiencing pleasant weather and also Turkey’s blooming weather. Hot air balloon trips are the best experience to have during this time.

Turkey is a relatively large country but you could cover the major sites and attractions in about 2 weeks. This includes a visit to Cappadocia, Istanbul, Antalya, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Ankara.

Actually Turkey is one of the cheapest countries in Eurasia. Their accommodations are cheap but high in quality and all of the tour services in Turkey have affordable prices. The food is also not pricey and you can easily find stuffs in Turkish bazaars.

If you are a traveling to Turkey for the first time, we suggest either staying at Istanbul or Cappadocia. Cappadocia offers a variety of nature and sightseeing opportunities while Istanbul is the economic and tourist hotspot of the country and has a bustling nightlife.

Turkey has a lot of natural wonders that you can go and see on your vacation. These range from the Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia to the travertine and hot springs of Pamukkale. There is also the ancient Greco-Roman city of Ephesus.

10 of the best places to visit in Türkiye

The eclectic city of Istanbul, the fantastical rock forms of Cappadocia, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, and the glimmering Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines are Türkiye ’s biggest draws, but each region of the country has something distinct to offer.

The diversity of landscapes, heritage and culinary culture will surprise those who have never ventured beyond holiday resorts and the beach. Even though it’s easy to get around Türkiye , the country has too much to see and do to tackle it all on one trip. Because most domestic flights route through Istanbul, spend at least a few days in this dynamic global metropolis before heading out to one of our other top places to visit in Türkiye.

An interior shot of a grand mosque building, with a huge central golden dome and massive chandeliers hanging down from the ceiling

1. Istanbul

Best for ancient sites and modern neighborhoods

One of the world’s greatest cities, Istanbul should be on every traveler’s must-visit list. Highlight sights like the grand Byzantine basilica Aya Sofya , often called Hagia Sophia in English, and the Ottoman sultans’ lavish Topkapı Palace attest to the city’s centuries-long history as the capital of powerful empires.

But set aside some time to experience Istanbul as it is today, too. Go cafe- or bar-hopping in the hip Kadıköy neighborhood, wander the backstreets of more conservative Fatih or peruse contemporary art in Beyoğlu . Don’t forget the simple pleasure of drinking çay (tea) on the ferry while taking in spectacular views of the city.

Planning tip:  You could easily spend your entire vacation in Istanbul, but if you have the time, it's worth venturing further afield in search of other Turkish delights.

Aerial shot of brightly colored hot-air balloons over a landscape with a lot of hills, exposed rock, and other geological features

2. Cappadocia

Best for its unique landscape

Cappadocia is a geological wonderland in the center of Türkiye. The history of early Christians in Anatolia comes alive at the Göreme Open-Air Museum and the other cave churches and underground cities scattered around the valley. Romance blossoms in the area’s cozy cave hotels and restaurants, not to mention sunrise balloon rides complete with a champagne toast. Adventure awaits amid the green valleys and undulating rocks for hikers, mountain bikers and trail runners .

A curved stretch of empty beach as the sun sets

3. Turquoise Coast

Best for history lovers and beaches

Yes, Türkiye's  Mediterranean coastline between Fethiye and Antalya is full of beautiful places for sun, sea and sand vacations , but it’s also dappled with evidence of the ancient civilizations that once populated the area. The seaside ruins of Patara (which boasts one of Türkiye's best beaches too) and Phaselis are particularly picturesque, and the rock tombs of Myra are especially impressive. The Antalya Museum offers good insights into the region’s history. Explore by sea on a gület cruise, on foot along the Lycian Way hiking path or by driving the scenic (but winding!) coastal roads.

A monastery building constructed into the side of a huge cliff high up above a valley

4. Eastern Black Sea and Kaçkar Mountains

Best for rural traditions

The rough, cold waters of the Black Sea aren’t particularly inviting, but turn your gaze inland, where lush green valleys spill down to the coast from high peaks, to see the region’s appeal. The lower elevations are home to most of Türkiye's tea and hazelnut production, while the high plateaus ( yaylalar ) like Pokut , that were once used as summer pastures for livestock, are becoming popular with tourists seeking out scenic views and a taste of traditional Black Sea culture and cuisine. Further above, the Kaçkar Mountains offer spectacular trekking in summer for experienced hikers.

Planning tip:  Trabzon, home to the cliff-side Sumela Monastery , is the area’s main hub for air travel.

A sandstone-colored monastery building viewed through an archway

5. Southeastern Anatolia

Best for culture and food

The often-overlooked southeastern Anatolia region is one of Türkiye's cultural – and culinary – stars. The cities of Gaziantep and Antakya (Hatay) are famed for their food, and both also boast museums with incredible collections of Roman mosaics. Mardin ’s picturesque, well-preserved old town also makes a great base for exploring the monasteries and Roman ruins in the surrounding area. The world’s oldest religious site, Göbeklitepe , lies just outside of Şanlıurfa, which has its own fine archaeology museum and bazaar .

6. Datça and Bozburun peninsulas

Best for relaxation

Chilling out and getting back to nature is the order of the day on the remote  Datça and Bozburun peninsulas in the south Aegean. In place of the boisterous nightlife of nearby Bodrum and Marmaris, you’ll find miles of dramatic rocky coastline, scenic rural villages, and small, quiet beach resorts and seaside towns.

Planning tip:  The Carian Trail long-distance hiking path encircles both peninsulas. Check before setting out as some sections of the route were inaccessible following wildfire damage in the summer of 2021.

A red-stone palace with a central domed tower. A snow-capped mountain rises in the distance

7. Türkiye's far east

Best for rugged beauty

The vast landscapes of Türkiye's far east have a remote ruggedness unmatched elsewhere in the country. Perhaps best known to travelers as the terminus of the Doğu Ekpresi (Eastern Express) , a popular and scenic overnight train trip from Ankara , the border city of Kars retains striking architecture from its years as a Russian outpost in the 1800s. Nearby are the extensive and evocative UNESCO-listed ruins of Ani , an ancient Armenian capital.

A three-hour drive south will take you to the remote İshak Paşa Palace , passing by the fabled Mt Ararat (Ağrı Dağı) en route. Continue on to Van , where you can fuel up on one of the city’s famously elaborate breakfast spreads before visiting the fine museum in town and taking a day excursion to Akdamar Kilisesi , a masterfully decorated Armenian church and monastery complex on a small island in Lake Van.

A semi-ruined amphitheater facing a crumbling stone wall

8. Gallipoli and the North Aegean

Best for WWI history and ancient Troy

Cemeteries devoted to the tens of thousands of soldiers who died in bloody battles on the Gallipoli Peninsula during WWI are scattered around bucolic rolling hills, all the more poignant amidst such serenely beautiful landscapes.

The area is also the gateway to Türkiye's North Aegean coast, a more relaxed alternative to the Mediterranean where you can take a leisurely tour of pleasant seaside towns like Ayvalık and Foça, the island wineries of Bozcaada, the ancient city of Troy (with its standout museum ) and the spectacularly sited hilltop acropolis of Bergama .

A series of timbered houses built into a hillside

9. Safranbolu

Best for Ottoman atmosphere

Named for the saffron that was grown and traded here for centuries, Safranbolu is today popular with visitors who come to soak in its old Ottoman atmosphere. Many of the town’s historic wood-framed mansions have been restored and converted into picture-perfect boutique hotels, cafes and restaurants.

Planning tip:  If it all starts to seem a little too cutesy, the canyons, waterfalls and woods of the nearby Yenice Forest are a natural tonic.

A series of white tiered flat rocks in the setting sun

10. Pamukkale

Best for its ancient spa

The bright-white terraces of Pamukkale are surely one of the most photographed sites in Türkiye, incongruously gleaming above the rural town like freshly fallen snow. The warm mineral water that flows through them was the basis for the ancient spa city of Hierapolis , whose extensive remains sprawl out along the hilltop next to the famous travertines.

Planning tip:  Pamukkale also makes a good base for visiting other nearby ancient sites like Laodicea , Tripolis and – most notably – the gorgeous ruins of Afrodisias with its impressive collection of Roman marble sculptures.

Euro 2024: netherlands vs. turkey odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

Netherlands  battles Turkey Saturday in a quarterfinal match of Euro 2024 from Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Netherlands vs. Turkey odds , and make our best Euro 2024 bets, picks and predictions .

Netherlands, which sits 7th in the FIFA World Rankings, throttled Romania 3-0 in the Round of 16. It ended with 18 more shots, 5 more shots on frame, and 65% of the possession. Netherlands finished the group stage with a 1-1-1 record, beating Poland 2-1, drawing France 0-0 and losing to Austria 3-2. It finished 3-0-1 in its 4 friendlies leading up to Euro as well. It has the 5th-best odds (+650) to win the tournament heading into the quarterfinal.

Turkey has the longest odds at +3600 and is the only nation with +1500 odds. The No. 42 team in FIFA’s rankings beat Austria, which won the Netherlands group, 2-1 in the Round of 16 Tuesday. It ended with 15 fewer shots and 2 fewer on frame. It finished 2nd in Group F, beating Georgia 3-1 and Czechia 2-1 while losing 3-0 to Portugal. Turkey doesn’t necessarily have a go-to offensive option but MF Hakan Calhanoglu has been a key weapon.

Netherlands vs. Turkey picks and predictions

Netherlands 3, Turkey 1

Moneyline  (ML)

BET NETHERLANDS (- 175 ).

Netherlands is a side with numerous experienced players, and that should bode well as it continues in the tournament. It has high-level scoring in F Cody Gapko and also has one of the best defenders in the world in D Virgil van Djik . While it drew France and lost to Austria, it had more shots on target in the former match and more shots in total in the latter.

Turkey is void of that type of leadership, like Austria was. Turkey lost in pre-Euro friendlies to Hungary (1-0), Austria (6-1) and Poland (2-1). Against quality sides, like Portugal, it has struggled. While these odds aren’t great, they are still playable for the favorite.

At this value, TAKE NETHERLANDS (- 175 ).

Check out Pro Soccer Wire : For the American soccer fan, USA TODAY Sports Media Group’s website provides a fresh look at the beautiful game.

Over/Under  (O/U)

BET OVER 2.5 (- 130 ).

Netherlands has scored 2 or more goals in 3 of 4 matches so far in the tournament and has topped this total in 3 of 4 matches. It has gone north of this total in 8 of its last 9 games as well, scoring at least 2 in 7 of those. It has players that compete on world-class clubs like F Xavi Simons , who plays for PSG, and Gapko, who plays for Liverpool. It should be able to break through a porous Turkey backline.

As for Turkey, it has gone north of this total in all 4 Euro games and has gone Over it in 5 straight. It has scored 7 goals in 4 matches, so it has an attack capable of producing as well. With the high-power offenses in mind, back OVER 2.5 (-130) . If you’re feeling aggressive, you might even consider the alternative Over 3.5 (+205) for a juicy payout,

This 1,500-year-old underground city is one of the most breathtaking places in the world

Let us head to Derinkuyu, Turkey’s largest underground city, where troglodyte architecture and legends come together in the heart of Cappadocia. Step down under the surface of the earth!

Discovered by chance in 1963, the underground city of Derinkuyu, around 300 km from Ankara, the Turkish capital, is the deepest and largest cave city in the world, with no less than eight levels carved out of the tufa rock, running 85 metres deep. Here’s the story of this unique site, a must-see during your stay in Cappadocia!

Hundreds of underground cities in Cappadocia

From the end of the 6 th century, when the region was threatened by Umayyad raids, thousands of inhabitants of Cappadocia – a region of what is now Turkey renowned for its fairy chimneys and other incredible rock formations – chose to go into hiding by seeking shelter in vast spaces dug beneath their houses. Invisible from the outside, these underground constructions provided ideal shelter from invaders, but also from the harsh winters of this central region of Anatolia . As a result, underground cities popped up (or down) very quickly, to the point where there are almost 200 of them today, particularly south of Nevşehir. Comprising around a hundred rooms on eight floors, Derinkuyu – whose name means “deep well” in Turkish – is the largest such city in the region… And in the world!

Derinkuyu, a masterpiece of troglodyte engineering

Like a human-scale anthill, intermittently inhabited between the 6 th and 11 th centuries, the underground city of Derinkuyu was able to function in total isolation for several months at a time. Walking through its corridors, you can discover and learn each room’s specific function, from communal kitchens to storage chambers. On the first level were the stables, as well as warehouses, silos and even a wine press. The lower levels housed living quarters, kitchens, pantries and communal rooms, including a school and chapel, linked by a wide network of galleries and tunnels.

Such a scale requires a particularly sophisticated ventilation system, comprising around fifty chimneys, some of which were extended by a water tank, used to let air circulate through the floors and collect rainwater. Finally, if any threat were to come to the city, the entrances could be closed at any time from the inside, using thick stone blocks. In total, it is estimated that around 10,000 people, along with their livestock and supplies, could have lived here!

Important information when visiting the underground city of Derinkuyu:

  • Around 10% of the city is now open to the public, with tours held every day of the year.
  • Two other underground cities, much smaller in size but just as interesting, can be visited in the area: Kaymakli and Ozkonak.

The good, the bad and the ugly of cosmetic tourism

Woman getting plastic surgery with a plane in the background and Metro's In Focus logo in the corner

Each year, thousands of Brits return from holiday with souvenirs slightly more costly than a comedy bottle opener or a fridge magnet.

Thanks to the popularity of cut-price package deals offering sun, sea and surgery, cosmetic tourism has seen an increasing number of men and women jetting off to sunnier climes such as thailand and Turkey for boob jobs, gastric bands or facelifts.

Even the term ‘Turkey Teeth’ has become part of entered our vocabulary, thanks to celebrities like Katie Price .

With the most recent data available from the Office for National Statistics citing that 248,000 UK residents traveled abroad for medical treatment in 2019, it’s a figure that has more than doubled since 2015.

And as surgery seekers flock to grab flights, there are plenty of plastic surgeons ready to entice customers with all-inclusive holidays and the promise of heavily discounted rates.

For many, it’s a happy holiday, but for others, as the popularity of cosmetic tourism soars, the results can be far from pretty.

A stock image of a woman getting plastic surgery

In fact, the number of people needing hospital treatment in the UK after getting cosmetic surgery abroad increased by 94% in just three years, according to 2023 research by The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

Their findings also revealed that procedures carried out in Turkey accounted for more than three quarters of those in six months alone.

In January this year, after travelling to Turkey for £2,500 gastric sleeve surgery, Morgan Riberio went into septic shock on the flight home. It emerged her small intestine had been cut during her operation, leading to a deadly infection that ultimately killed the 20-year-old.

A year earlier, Brazilian influencer Luana Andrade tragically lost her life after complications during her liposuction procedure. Dr Eduardo Teixeira from the Brazilian College of Plastic Surgery, had later said: ‘There is no risk-free surgery, nor any medical procedure that does not involve some type of risk, especially when it is a surgical procedure.’

Meanwhile Laura Donald, who underwent breast augmentation surgery and thigh liposuction in Wroclaw, Poland, nearly died from sepsis after her procedure in 2022.

‘Overseas surgery landed me in hospital’

Two pictures of Pinky Jolley in hospital

Pinky Jolley, from Wirral in Merseyside, is still coming to terms with her hellish experience abroad. The wheelchair user had been told she needed bariatric surgery to help lose weight after she was diagnosed with pancreatitis, polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes .

With NHS waiting times for the surgery standing at four years, Pinky set about to raise £2,100 through GoFundMe for her procedure. She flew to Istanbul in November 2022 for gastric sleeve surgery which lasted two hours.

‘The next thing I remember is waking up and the pain hit me hard’, Pinky, 46, tells Metro. ‘I told my nurses how much it hurt, but they said it was normal and the feelings would go soon. My IV of fluids had tissued [the fluid popped out of the vein] and the pain was getting worse and worse. The next day I was in sheer agony.’

Pinky’s stomach felt like it was ‘full of concrete’.  But, despite the pain, she was discharged and told to return to the UK.

A hospital scan showing air and an infection pocket inside Pinky's stomach

She recalls: ‘Once we landed back home in Liverpool I contacted my GP for blood tests. I got an urgent call the day the results were back, my GP told me to get to hospital right away, as I had sepsis. They [the doctors in Turkey] had taken too much of my stomach and cut it so poorly it was twisting on itself.’

Pinky has spent 18 months being fed via a tube, such was the damage to her body. While in hospital, her husband, Paul, made round-trips of 3.5 hours on public transport to visit his wife in hospital and keep her company.

Pinkey adds: ‘I already have mental health problems and everything was going through has taken its toll mentally on me and my family. I sadly have experienced a few breakdowns whilst in hospital.’

Pinky is just one of thousands of Brits who have fallen victim to botched surgery abroad. She feels lucky to have survived her ordeal, compared to others.

Bodywork on a budget

Marc Pacifico in black and white

‘Even if they know about the risks of procedures abroad, some people assume the psychology of “oh it won’t happen to me”,’ explains Marc Pacifico, president of BAAPS, who is speaking to Metro after a shift at his clinic in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

He adds: ‘There is the argument, well the people impacted are adults, they have capacity, no-one has made them travel to do this.

‘But the fact of the matter is that the majority of people who choose to do it is for financial reasons – because it is so much cheaper. Therefore, they’re put in an incredibly vulnerable position if surgery doesn’t work out and likely don’t have the finances to quickly fix the situation. That stress is coupled with feelings of guilt or humiliation on top of the mental anguish the surgery has left them with.’

Marc, who worked for the NHS for 20 years before opening his own private clinic seven years ago, has met women who were told to WhatsApp intimate body parts to random numbers overseas.

Meanwhile others explained they were held ‘hostage’ and told to write a five-star-review before in order to leave surgery. As the cost of living crisis continues, it’s likely more and more Brits will choose to go abroad rather than join NHS waiting lists.

A popular destination

Turkey, a country now intertwined with the cosmetic surgery industry, has steadily made a name for itself over several decades, says Marc. Low running costs, investment in private hospitals and a wave of surgeons settling in Turkey has made the nation a ‘hub’ for cosmetic procedures. People stumble on potential deals on social media, at in-person road shows or through word of mouth recommendations.

‘We also understand there’s been Turkish Government sponsored support for this movement to try and “control” the cosmetic tourism market’, Marc adds. ‘All of this has come to a head and brought an explosion of cosmetic tourism and, sadly, an increase in the number of people having problems and complications. We have multiple stories of patients having woefully inadequate care before, during and after surgery.’

According to the Foreign Office, at least 24 people from the UK are known to have died following medical procedures in Turkey since 2019. And in 2022 alone, it was estimated that the NHS had spent around £1.7 million to rectify complications from patients’ cosmetic surgery horrors abroad.

A clamp-down on social media advertising could spur change, as shown in 2023 when three Turkish plastic surgery clinics were blasted by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA.)

Adverts from clinics in Turkey which were slammed by the Advertising Standards Authority. They inclufde words like 'VIP transfer' and '5 star package'

One advert from ClinicHaus Health, which appeared on Facebook, promised ‘one of the most successful doctors in the world’ and ‘VIP transfer 5 star package Holiday’. Another from AsproMed challenged people to ‘unleash their inner beauty’ and promised ‘permanent beauty’.

In respnse, an ASA spokesman said: ‘We know that consumers are increasingly looking at going abroad for cosmetic surgery due to cost or ease of access and, while many people may be happy with the results, there are still inherent risks.

‘That’s why it’s so important that ads for these services aren’t misleading or irresponsible.’

Think before you book

There are several steps you can take to improve safety when opting for cosmetic surgery abroad. The NHS urges people to have a consultation with a surgeon, to never pay for a hospital you haven’t seen and – similarly – never offer money before meeting your surgeon.

Marc adds: ‘We’re seeing people return from surgery abroad and immediately go into intensive care in the UK. They can often be at death’s door.

‘Every surgeon who operates – whether it’s Turkey or the UK – will see complications at some point, that is a reality. But the change comes in how you look after those patients. ‘How do you miminise the risks in the first place? In the UK we have to make sure the surgery is the right decision.

‘At my clinic, it’s never lost on me that everyone who comes to see me is there about something deeply personal that affects their confidence, they’re vulnerable so we talk a lot.

‘I think it’s important for plastic surgeons to build up a rapport and relationship with their patients. I always say “I will never discharge you, you’re always my patient and you know where I am.’”

‘I was looked after from the moment I arrived in Turkey’

Elena Popova with thin hair

Amid the attention-grabbing horror stories, there are also many tales of success from Brits who quietly return from trips abroad with little fuss.

For Elena Popova, a 53-year-old from East London, it was the difference in price tags which led her to have cosmetic surgery in Turkey rather than the UK.

The accountant had suffered from rapid hair loss and her confidence had hit rock bottom.

‘I’ve had very fine hair my entire life but a few years ago that turned into losing a significant amount of hair, especially around the crown of my head’, Elena explains.

‘When you are seeing yourself everyday on Zoom or even just looking in the mirror and aren’t happy with the way you look, it affects the perception you have of yourself and can be horrible for your mental health.’

After attempting over-the-counter remedies and expensive shampoos, Elena began to research hair transplant options abroad.

Image of Elena Popova after her hair transplant

To save money, she decided to go for the overseas option with a company called EsteNove . ‘I was looked after from the moment I arrived in Turkey to the moment I flew home to London,’ Elena tells Metro. ‘They [staff] made sure I was involved in every process and had the information I needed to make informed decisions regarding my care.’

Elena was put in a WhatsApp group with the aftercare specialists who, eight months on from the surgery, still answer any questions she has.

Elena said she researched several clinics before she made her decision to travel to Turkey. The low price and speed at which she could be seen – and have her confidence transformed as a result – was the dealbreaker in her final decision.

Elena adds: ‘EsteNove quoted me £2,000, which was inclusive of the hair transplant procedure, hotel accommodation and transfer to and from the airport. In the UK, the hair transplant procedure alone would cost upwards of £3,000.

‘From my research of other clinics, it seemed like the hair transplant industry was designed and catered towards male patients. So I was drawn to Estenove as they had a section dedicated to women seeking hair transplants.

‘Knowing that they treated women like me and were informed on the issues facing women with hair loss helped put my mind at ease.’

How to watch Tour de France from anywhere

You can still access the free streams via VPN if you'll be outside of the UK, France, Australia, or any of the options outlined above during any part of the race. Short for virtual private networks, VPNs allow people to temporarily change their device's virtual location so that they can access their usual websites from anywhere. VPNs are especially popular among people looking to boost their online privacy and keep up with all their apps while traveling abroad.

Our go-to recommendation is ExpressVPN since it's beginner-friendly and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Check out our ExpressVPN review for additional details, and keep reading to learn how to use a VPN.

What people love about Turkey Tours from Istanbul

It was an outstanding tour. We are so glad that we choose dorak for our turkey trip. When we landed in Turkey, the driver did not pick up on time and we had to book a car to travel to the hotel. Yaren who is in operation team was so guilty for the inconvenience that she ensured to not only refund our money for the taxi but also covered the cost for the extra day that we stayed in Istanbul. We were really impressed by the gesture and really appreciate it. Coming to the tour part, the tour guide(Gonul Demirkol) was completely outstanding, in each of the spots she would tell us stories of what happened and made each and every activity fun. We really enjoyed her company and the best part was we were just a small group of 12 people and we got along quite well which made the trip more fun. We are glad that we got Gonul(GG) as our tour guide. She made the trip fabulous. Each and every day we would have a lunch or dinner that is included and the food places that was selected was just so fulfilling. Our tour guide would always ensure that we are always on the same page and enjoy what we are doing which we really appreciated. I also left my ear pods on one of the hotels, she herself ensured that it is posted back to the istanbul hotel. I was glad for this behaviour and was so pleased. The driver(Tolga) who dropped us off to the airport was infront of the hotel on time and he was there till the end. He dropped our luggages to the check in point in the airport. We really appreciate his amazing service. Overall, we are thankful to Dorak and we highly recommend Dorak cause honestly they are the best. Their service is totally outstanding and is completely worth it.
Hello everyone. It was my second Turkey tour. As a pro ;) HIGH RECOMMENDED !!! Cappadocia is one of the most interesting place in the whole world. And the underground cities was amazing. Thank you the operators and the guide too.
Fez Travel packed in lots of sights and things to see and do. I liked the variety in our stops and sights. Well planned except for the last couple of days. Somehow, they need to be tweaked so there are not so many unreasonable night departures. I would have rather paid a bit more and had the meals ordered when we sat down. Buffet meals were luke warm, over cooked, and meats were so dry from heating for long periods. The meals we sat down and was served were much better, tastier, better variety of foods.
