Seminal Scottish indie-pop group Belle and Sebastian head to SWG3 Galvanizers Yard on Friday 2 August, and Saturday 3 August 2024, for 'The Glasgow Weekender'. The group, with their lushly orchestrated chamber pop tunes built on unabashedly twee sentiments and melodies, will take to the stage both days – and will be joined by a hand selected lineup consisting of Scottish indie favourites from years gone by such as Camera Obscura, and BIS, as well as rising stars CMAT, and The Joy Hotel.  More than just a concert, it will be a full festival experience, spread across a variety of spaces with street food, DJs and much more. 

This event is over 5s. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. 

Key information The Galvanizers Yard is an outdoors space, and accessible facilities are dependent on the scale of the event. Please note that some of the ground in the yard is uneven.

Booking accessible tickets The Galvanizers Yard has an accessible viewing platform with seats and wheelchair spaces. Unreserved seats, wheelchair spaces and free companion tickets can be booked through Ticketmaster online for this event. Ticketmaster require proof of eligibility for those applying for companion tickets. Further information is available at the time of booking. Spaces on our platform are limited and issued on a first come, first served basis. BY TRAIN + SUBWAY + BUS

The nearest travel hub is Partick Interchange. From there, it’s a 10 minute walk to SWG3 along the Expressway.

The nearest bike racks can be found on the corner of Kelvinhaugh Street and Dumbarton Road, including NextBike stands. Bikes will not be permitted on site, so please lock up before arriving.

There are a variety of pubs and restaurants situated in the heart of Finnieston, which is a five minute walk from the venue.  SWG3 is located in a residential area. Please respect the neighbours by keeping the noise down when arriving at, and leaving, the venue.

1. Stow College (now GSA Stow building)

Belle and Sebastian's debut album Tigermilk was released on Electric Honey Records, the label run by the students on Stow College’s music business course – one of whom was drummer Richard Colburn. Electric Honey was described by Uncut magazine as being " the most successful student-run label in the world " , having helped build the careers of bands like Biffy Clyro and Snow Patrol. Stow College has closed with the building now part of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) campus.

2. Charing Cross Pedestrian Bridge

Linking the city centre and the west end, the footbridge at Charing Cross features in the band’s Dog on Wheels video (view the video on YouTube) , which ends with lead singer Stuart Murdoch launching a toy parachute man into the air.

3. Kelvingrove Bandstand

Belle and Sebastian played the opening gig here for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. The band have a love affair with Kelvingrove Park. 4. The Halt Bar (now Finsbay Flatiron)

Stuart Murdoch and Stevie Jackson met here at the weekly open mic night. Stevie agreed to join the band as their guitarist (reluctantly) following the split of his band, The Moondials.

5. Tchai Ovna House of Tea

6. The University of Glasgow

Stuart Murdoch ran for Student Rector in 2001 but lost out to Chewin’ the Fat’s Greg Hemphill. Stuart, Chris Geddes and Sarah Martin all studied here. To book a tour around the University, visit gla.ac.uk.

7. Grosvenor Café (now Vodka Wodka)

Many of the band’s members were recruited at this hangout – aka The Celestial Café, the title of Stuart Murdoch's book. Mark Jones of Jeepster met the band here in an attempt to get them to sign to the label, offering them “anything".

8. Botanic Gardens

School’s Out with Belle and Sebastian and Friends, a free gig as part of the West End Festival, took place here on June 12, 2004 and attracted 12,000 people! The mini-festival also included Camera Obscura, The Trashcan Sinatras and V-Twin. Visit Glasgow Botanic Garden's website to find out more.

9. Hotel Du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens

This historic 5-star hotel was the place where the band met music mogul Seymour Stein – the man who launched the careers of the likes of Madonna, Talking Heads and The Smiths. 10. Broomhill Hyndland Parish Church

Stuart Murdoch lived in the flat above the church hall from late 1995 for 9 years and worked as the church caretaker. The band rehearsed and recorded here in the mid-nineties, with the church appearing in the Lazy Line Painter Jane video, which you can view on YouTube.

11. The Sparkle Horse

Belle & Sebastian announce The Glasgow Weekender with CMAT, Camera Obscura and more

Belle & Sebastian have announced they will curate a new festival called ‘The Glasgow Weekender’ – see below for ticket information.

The band will take over Glasgow’s SWG3 from August 2-3, where they will play shows on each night and curate the lineup for both days.

The festival is part of the Scottish band’s ‘Bowlie’ Weekenders, with the first Bowlie staged in 1999 at Pontins, Camber Sands. They returned to Camber Sands in 2010 for ‘Bowlie 2’, and announced 2019’s ‘ Boaty Weekender ‘ which took place on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea.

Camera Obscura , CMAT , The Joy Hotel, and Bis have been announced to join the Scottish indie pop band this year; more acts are soon to be announced. General sale starts on February 2, 10am – get your tickets here .

Frontman Stuart Murdoch said: “Belle & Sebastian are very much looking forward to hosting ‘The Glasgow Weekender’. We’ve been wanting to do a Glasgow event for quite a while, and SWG3 is a great venue. We’re going to have the run of the place for the whole weekend, great bands, great djs, great food and sundry ‘Bowlie’ type activities. It’s still in the middle of winter, but we’re glad we have something to look forward to, a sunny happening on the banks of the Clyde, see you there!”

Belle & Sebastian have recently been announced as part of Kilby’s Block Party this year. LCD Soundsystem ,  Vampire Weekend and The Postal Service are set to headline, along with a rare appearance from harpist Joanna Newsom .

Murdoch also recently announced details of his debut novel,  Nobody’s Empire . The “part memoir and part fiction” book will be centred around a character called Stephen who shares same chronic fatigue syndrome as Murdoch himself. It will be released in September 2024.

Belle and Sebastian Announce 2023 North American Tour

The new stretch follows runs in the UK, South America, and Europe

Belle and Sebastian have unveiled a 2023 run of North American tour dates in support of their latest album, A Bit of Previous .

The trek adds 20 dates to the Scottish outfit’s schedule, which already includes previously-announced UK and South American legs in 2022. Following a European circuit in early 2023, Belle and Sebastian’s new stretch kicks off in Guadalajara, Mexico on April 24th. They’ll play Detroit, Toronto, Atlanta, and more before closing in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 19th. See the full itinerary below.

Tickets for Belle and Sebastian’s North American tour will go on sale Friday, October 21st at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

Belle and Sebastian’s live engagements have had a special feel thanks to their new LP, which featured the septet recording together in their hometown of Glasgow for the first time since 1999. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Martin delved deeper into the development of the band’s eleventh album in an interview with Consequence in May.

The band gave a sample of their latest live set in July with a characteristically whimsical performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk . The show’s abbreviated tracklist included the recent single “Unnecessary Drama” and several other cuts from A Bit of Previous as well as “Judy and the Dream of Horses” from 1996’s If You’re Feeling Sinister .

Belle and Sebastian tours

Our regular  music mile tour  has great stories about the very early days of belle and sebastian but more and more people have been getting in touch asking if we could do bespoke tours focused on the band., after scratching our heads for a bit, we came up with a flexible tour which takes in all of the major sites which are associated with the band or their songs..

We make no claims to be personal friends of B&S and the tours have no official links with the group but, over the years, various members of Glasgow Music City Tours have been in contact with B&S band people for assorted reasons.

Unique tours

As a result, we have some aural and visual archive material which is not available publicly but can be included in the tours. We think the tours are a unique way to see the parts of Glasgow which helped shape the band and which inspired their music.

Earlier this summer, we ran the very first of these tours for Vlad and Mallory, a lovely couple who were visiting from the States. This is what happened:The tours can be tailored to each group’s requirements. What they all have in common is that they offer an entertaining, informal and well-informed insight into the Belle and Sebastian world.

We took our guests for a leisurely amble through the west end of Glasgow on a glorious, sunny afternoon – perfect ‘taps aff’ weather, as Mallory noted, showing off her speedily acquired knowledge of the local lingo.

First stop was Cava Studios. We respectfully worshipped outside this converted church where Belle & Sebastian recorded their debut album Tigermilk and played a launch gig on the day of release, 6th June 1996. That was twenty years ago today(ish)!

Part of the studio complex is now divided into flats and, conveniently demonstrating our thesis that everyone in Glasgow knows everyone else, a resident of our acquaintance was sunbathing on the steps and offered to show us the basement where Belle & Sebastian recorded the album. It is now a distinctly unglamorous parking garage. Thanks to Andrea for our unscheduled exclusive access!

Band hangouts

Next, we strolled through Kelvingrove Park before taking in the university campus, where several members of Belle & Sebastian studied. Then it was time for drinks in Vodka Wodka, the former site of the Grosvenor Café where many B&S members were once recruited, plans hatched and veggie burgers consumed.

The Botanic Gardens were teeming with life as we recalled a similarly sunny day in 2004 when the band hosted School’s Out with Belle & Sebastian & Friends, a free all-day festival as part of the West End Festival that year.

Our guests were keen to make a pilgrimage to the church hall where Stuart Murdoch lived in the late 90s and several B&S albums were rehearsed and recorded, so we finished their tour with a walk through leafy Dowanhill to this key B&S site, before guiding them to one of the band’s favourite hostelries for a post-tour refreshment.

This tour centred on the West End but, of course, there are places of interest in the city centre and these can be included in other tours.
