Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Just wanted to make an update. I was able to install the Autostrada unit today, which was largely uneventful. I didn't run into any issues soldering the three wires needed, and other connectors fit as needed. I ended up mounting it next to the fuse box, drilling a small hole through the plastic support. This allows easy access via the fuse panel. After passing the built in diagnostic tests, tested it on the road, and it's working very well.

Autostrada Cruise Control cancels with blinker

autostrada cruise control problems

  • Add to quote

I had the universal kit fitted by my local auto-elec. Everything seemed to be fine until I realised that when the R blinker was used with headlights on, the CC would cancel. Anyone heard of this happening, or suggest why?

autostrada cruise control problems

I'm guessing this has something to do with faulty trailer wiring. Check your trailer socket or if this happened when you had a trailer on the back, check your trailer wiring, particularly your earths. Edit; The other thing to check is the earth from your right hand rear bumper combination light.

I have heard of problems like this before. The problem is with the earthing of the rear lights. The cruise control uses this earth to operate. It picks this up from the cold side of the brakes connection. Click to expand...

Yeah, the CC brake signal wire looks for a 0v signal on the brake pedal switch. If there is voltage there like when you put your foot on the brake the CC will disconnect. If there is no voltage there (as opposed to 0v) it thinks the wire is broken and will also disconnect the CC. If you lose an earth on one of the rear lights then instead of the current flowing from the blinker wire through the blinker bulb to earth it flows through the blinker bulb then from the common junction with all the other bulbs in the cluster that should be earthed (but isn't) it flows back through the other brake bulb, across the wiring to the other light assembly then through that brake bulb to earth. This will put a low voltage on the brake sensor wire when either the blinker or the tail lights are on but if they are both on together the voltage will be high enough to trip the CC. Earths in trailer lights are far less reliable than cars and this is more of a problem when trailers are connected. This is best done at night. Put your tail lights on and turn your right blinker on. Now go behind the car and look at your lights. If you have a bad earth on the right light assembly you should see the right tail light much dimmer than the left, the right blinker flashing somewhat dimmer than it should be and both brake lights flashing from dim to very dim but never going out completely. It is this dim light that the CC brake sensor wire sees.

Cruise Control Kits: what are they and why you need one

Cruise Control Kits: what are they and why you need one

Published by John on 3rd Nov 2021

cruise_control_steering_wheel_istock_-_zenstock

Ready to hit the road (hopefully interstate) this summer after what felt like an eternity? If you are planning long trips...cruising along, and enjoying the scenery, well.. cruise controls may come quite handy.

This post will cover a few critical aspects of cruise controls , what they are, how they work, and how they can benefit you on the road.

First of all, how does cruise control work?

Cruise control is a system that automatically manages the speed of a car. Cruise controls help reduce drivers fatigue while driving a long distance by imitating how a human driver would drive.

But instead of pushing the accelerator pedal, it utilises an actuator to regulate the throttle helping your car cruise at the same speed. Or technically, a servomechanism's system that leads over the car's throttle to sustain the steady speed set by the driver.

Ok, you may ask, is a cruise control connected to the transmission?

The quick answer is that a cruise control utilises some of the same sensor inputs the transmission uses, affecting the transmission and cruise control. So, for example, if the transmission is slipping, the cruise control may not control the speed steadily.

You can check this video to learn more about all the nitty-gritty:

Can you brake on cruise control?

Sure, you can but applying the foot brake automatically shuts off the cruise settings.

Alternatively, you can step on the brake pedal using the decelerate button on your car's cruise control panel.

Typically, you can adjust the speed setting by tapping up or down.

When should you use cruise control?

Ideally, you should press on cruise control when there is little to no traffic and let you enjoy those clear roads, helping you maintain a consistent speed.

And, of course, use it only when the speed limit stays the same for long periods.

Could cruise control be bad?

Well, it can potentially affect your reaction times.

As mentioned, cruise control makes it super-easy.

Still, it can get too comfortable, causing you not to stay alert while driving.

In addition, it can lead to slower reaction times in the event of unexpected stops in traffic.

Such as or when other drivers cut you off, distracted pedestrians, crazy kangaroos crossing into your path, you name it.

So when is it advisable NOT to use cruise control:

  • When it's wet or slippery. Even if your car has ACC or traction control, play safe and not cruise control on wet terrain.
  • When you feel sleepy (obviously)
  • When driving in urban areas or heavy traffic.
  • When driving through strong winds.

Do we suggest not using cruise control in the rain?

There is a bit of debate on using cruise control when raining.

Most people would recommend being fully in command and turning it off; however, others may suggest otherwise, as you can learn below:

Can cruise control be bad for your engine?

Not at all.

The constant change in acceleration and deceleration costs extra fuel plus wear and tear on the driveline.

So cruise control is good for your car.

And generally speaking, it can save petrol by helping you become more fuel-efficient, saving an average of 7-14% on fuel, thanks to its ability to keep a constant speed and apply gentle acceleration.

Does cruise control use the battery?

You will save battery on flat roads. Doesn't matter what you drive: electric, petrol or diesel car.

On hilly roads, cruise control will use more energy, kind of obvious, really.

So, after all, is cruise control worth using?

Using cruise control is an excellent method to control your speed when driving in determined areas.

Setting your vehicle's cruise control at a reasonable speed (speed limit would be a good start) will also reduce fuel consumption by limiting abrupt accelerations and decelerations.

My 4wd doesn't have cruise control. Can I still install it?

You sure can, and it's never too late.

There are many aftermarket cruise control kits suitable for specific make/models (but you can also get universal fitting cruise control kits).

Both are pretty straightforward to install, as you can see in this video:

I've seen lots of enquiries about cruise control for Yaris but no answers. I recently had an Autostrada cruise control fitted to my Yaris YRX auto sedan with excellent results. Driving from Brisbane to Toowoomba the cruise control maintained perfect speed & revs, even up and down all the ranges and improved fuel economy as an added bonus an 1km per litre better on the highway. With all the extra radars around these days it is worth it.

Out of interest what fuel economy are you guys getting with a 1.5 lit sedan. I run my car on Caltex Vortex an I get 18.3+ km per lit average. On a flat road close to 19km per lit.

Newbie, mind if I ask what the Cruise control cost?

The one I got was $845.00 Fitted. It has a remote sterring control stwiches. A stalk controll is cheaper from $700.00

Cruise Control is really useful if you do alot/somewhat of Highway driving...

Cruise Control makes Driving From Sydney to Melbourne a breeze :)

It does take more petrol when going up/down hill. (depending on the steep)

Thanks for that reply--might look to getting down the track--did it take long to fit?

They should invent cruise control for manual vehicles :)

Don't they have cruise control for manuals ?

Yes they do from memory,

Guest

yes. It has an additional switch under the clutch pedal to disengage it. Otherwise its identical to the cruise on an auto.
