Sky Tram & Sky Trek Costa Rica Tour

Sky Tram & Sky Trek Costa Rica Tour

Sky Tram toward Arenal Volcano & Zip Line over the Rainforest

Once the top is reached, visitors are invited to explore the observation deck, where they’ll enjoy magnificent views of the Arenal Volcano’s southern face, and potentially see even more wildlife soar through the air or leap from tree to tree. From here, one can also see Lake Arenal and the rolling hillsides that surround it. Visitors can spend as much time as they please on the observation deck before heading back down.

There are two ways to return to the Sky Tram’s base. You can ride the tram down the same route that you ascended or sign up for a fast-paced zip line tour to the bottom. Those seeking an adrenaline rush would be wise to choose the second option, which will have them flying along a series of secure cables connecting one mountain to another.

At the tram’s base there is another large observation deck as well as a restaurant. The views from this deck compliment and contrast the one from the mountain’s peak.

Sky Tram is a 45-minute drive from the town of La Fortuna . The trip is shorter if you are staying in hotels like Arenal Observatory Lodge , Montana de Fuego , or Arenal Paraiso , for example.

We offer a shuttle service with door-to-door transportation from your Arenal hotel . Cost is $8 a person. Please note that children under 8 years of age are not allowed on Sky Trek.

Cancellation Policy: Sky Trek has a strict cancellation policy. If a reservation is canceled less than 48 hours prior to the tour date, NO REFUND is given.

If you’ve never done an activity like this before, learn why Costa Rica’s adventure tours are remarkably safe , and get answers to all of your concerns about adventure trips in Costa Rica .

Transportation

If you need transportation from the Lost Iguana Resort , the Arenal Lodge , or The Springs Resort and Spa , please note that it is available only for the 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM tours. Arenal’s landscape is beautiful, but can be quite rugged ; we recommend leaving the driving to the professionals, and using our convenient transportation service . You will get to your hotel and all of your exciting adventures with ease. Less time focused on driving is more time you’ll have to take in the splendour of Arenal .

Tailored, Trusted, and Transformative Travel Experiences

Epic Journey With a Friend

Customer Reviewed  At Monteverde Lodge, we really appreciated that they placed water jugs in each room and offered ice and fresh fruit for the water each evening. This would be a great idea for other accommodations - we would be less inclined to buy water in plastic bottles for the room, and it would indicate that the tap water was great to drink (if that was the case).

Pura Vida Style Honeymoon

Customer Reviewed  We were so pleased with this service and the amazing trip they put together for us. We’re so glad to have spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica where we could be close to nature and have so many new experiences.

A Pura Vida Adventure with Friends

Customer Reviewed  Loved the company and people. Everyone was so nice and proud of their country which made the visit great!

As we mentioned in our related blog post  Sky Adventures Arenal: Ziplining, Hanging Bridges, And Tram Rides In La Fortuna ,  we’ve been visiting  Sky Adventures ‘s Arenal (La Fortuna) and Monteverde (Santa Elena) adventure parks and experiencing the company’s adventure and nature tours for more than a decade.  In that article, we detailed  Sky Adventures ‘s entire Arenal operation, including their Arenal  Sky Trek canopy ziplining tour , their Arenal  Sky Tram aerial tram ride , their Arenal  Sky Walk hanging bridges , their Arenal  Sky Limit obstacle course , their Arenal  Sky River Drift tubing tour , their Arenal  Sky Wild kayaking tour , their Arenal  Sky Wild biking tour , and their on-site facilities including free lockers, free parking, dining opportunities, and more. If you’re interested in learning about the various tours, activities, and services that are available at the  Sky Adventures Arenal Park , please see the article linked to above.  If you’re specifically interested in learning about  Sky Adventures ‘s  Arenal Sky Tram aerial tram ride , please continue reading below.

Sky Adventures Arenal

Unlike the scenery you’ll be treated to at the  Sky Adventures Monteverde Park , which includes endless views of cloud forest ecosystems,  the view you’ll get while riding the Arenal Sky Tram is one that spans the  Arenal Volcano  and  Lake Arenal .  Sky Tram rides are a great way to view Costa Rica’s treetop canopy from above, which often surprises viewers with sightings of playful monkeys and tropical birds.

At the  Sky Adventures Arenal Park , you can ride the Sky Tram on its own or as part of the  Sky Trek canopy ziplining tour .  On its own, you’ll ride the tram up to the top of the rainforest and down again, ending where you departed at  Sky Adventures ‘s operations center. As part of the  Sky Trek canopy ziplining tour , after riding the tram in one direction (up to the top of the rainforest), you’ll zipline down to  Sky Adventures ‘s operations center.

A one-way Sky Tram ride at the  Sky Adventures Arenal Park  lasts approximately 20 minutes  when counting from the moment the tram compartment departs from  Sky Adventures ‘s operations center until the moment the tram compartment arrives at a platform at the top of the rainforest.

If you’re experiencing the Sky Tram ride as part of the  Sky Trek canopy ziplining tour , you’ll only ride the tram one way (to the top of the rainforest).  Once you disembark at the platform at the top of the rainforest, you’ll begin the ziplining portion of the tour and you won’t return to (or ride) the tram again.

If you reserve the Sky Tram ride only (i.e., if you do not plan to participate in the  Sky Trek canopy ziplining tour ), you’ll ride the tram both ways (to the top of the rainforest and back down again).  You’ll be given approximately 20 minutes to explore the platform at the top of the rainforest. During that time, you can take in beautiful views of the rainforest, snap photos, and scan the forest canopy for birds and wildlife. Just off the platform is a short nature trail that you’re welcome to explore on foot. The trail will introduce you to flora native to the area, including large elephant-ear plants, cecropia plants (a sloth’s favorite!), and striking heliconias. Once you re-board the tram compartment, you’ll spend approximately 20 minutes riding it back to the operations center. The ride will complete your 1-hour Sky Tram aerial tram experience.

There is currently no minimum age limit imposed on individuals who are interested in riding the Sky Tram.

There is currently no maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who are interested in riding the Sky Tram.

Sky Tram rides are family-friendly. What’s more,  children (ages 0-5 years) are welcome to ride the Sky Tram in Arenal for free with a paying adult.

The Sky Tram aerial tram compartments at the  Sky Adventures Arenal Park  are  spacious and accessible to people with a variety of disabilities, including individuals who use walkers and/or wheelchairs.  The platform at the top of the cloud forest, which boasts an incredible view of the  Arenal Volcano  and surrounding rainforest, is also wheelchair accessible.

Don’t miss our Sky Tram aerial tram ride discounts: Sky Tram Aerial Tram Ride (Arenal) Sky Tram Aerial Tram Ride and Sky Walk Hanging Bridges Tour Combo (Arenal) Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour (includes one-way tram ride) and Sky Walk Hanging Bridges Tour Combo (Arenal)

Amazing Costa Rica Experience Our guide, Alberto Gonzales, with Greenway made sure our experience was filled with great information and wonderful things to see, buy and taste. We were able to see many animals on land and water and learn all about the culture while zooming around in a comfortable bus. It was a small tour so we had plenty of personal attention. Greenway was the best tour on our trip to Costa Rica! A great company!

Birds, Crocs, Howlers and Sloths we saw it all… Lazy day on the river and effortless walk in the forest led us to see an abundance of local wildlife. Knowledgeable guide and small group size made it all the better. Very accommodating, comfortable, clean vehicles. We even stopped for a local meal and to sample regional fruit…Highly recommend!

Aerial Trams

Much of Costa Rica’s biodiversity exists in the forest canopy. Aerial trams offer incredible insight into life above the forest floor, combining a peaceful ride, picturesque scenery, and knowledgeable guides to create an unforgettable journey above the treetops.

Northern Zone

Explore the rainforest canopy and enjoy spectacular views of Arenal volcano on Arenal’s Sky Tram. Located in Arenal, the tour extends some 4,100 feet to the highest point in the Arenal Rainforest Reserve. Observe the forest canopy at eye level as each gondola rises 150 feet off the ground. Naturalist guides point out howler monkeys, parrots, three-toed sloths, motmots and other wildlife species in the verdant surrounds. This aerial tram tour may be combined with an adrenaline-pumping canopy tour and/or visit to a beautiful butterfly garden.

Central Pacific

Created to raise consciousness of the tropical rainforest and increasingly rare tropical dry forest habitats around Jaco, the Rainforest Aerial Tram Pacific features an open-air gondola that traverses a mile of stunning rainforest. Get inspired by the forest’s hidden jewels and hanging gardens that drip from towering trees as trained guides identify local flora and fauna. The park offers combo packages that include the tram and a canopy tour or a stroll through the serpentarium and heliconia garden.

Central Valley

Central Valley is graced with two aerial trams, one located adjacent to Braulio Carrillo National Park and the other in Turrubares, close to Orotina. At Braulio Carrillo, visitors glide over and through a layer of rainforest canopy, and are treated to views that range from dense forest interior to wide open vistas. After the tram ride, guests can partake in a canopy tour and visit a frog pond, butterfly garden and serpentarium. At Turu Ba Ri Adventure Park, gondolas gently ascend to heights of over 200 feet along a 2,000-foot cable for panoramic views of the Tarcoles River. This tour may be combined with a zip-line canopy tour, nature walk, horseback riding, or the sensational Superman cable.

Monteverde is home to two aerial trams: one slow-paced and the other adrenaline-packed. The first, located in nearby Cerro Plano, is ideal for those who wish to experience the forest canopy at a slow pace or have trouble negotiating the cloud forest’s rugged trails. The open-air tram, which can hold up to two people per car, travels one hour through secondary forest and beautiful gardens. Sky Trek Monteverde offers a bit more adventure, fantastic views and a little less nature, traveling up to one mile high on almost 5,250 feet of cable. This tour may be combined with a zip-line tour or a guided walk along hanging bridges.

Southern Caribbean

Journey through verdant jungle canopy, where a skilled guide will uncover incredible flora and diverse wildlife, including white-faced monkeys, tree frogs, sloths, and toucans. Just inland from the port city of Limon, the Veragua Rainforest tram is a popular stop for cruise ships and visitors heading to or from Puerto Viejo and Cahuita. At the tram’s halfway point, riders have the choice to ride back up through the canopy or take a break to hike to a thunderous waterfall. Onsite attractions include a reptile house, interactive ranarium, hummingbird garden, insectarium, butterfly garden, and numerous hikes.

A Rainforest Tram Ride in Jaco

  • Jenn and Matt

Costa Rica’s rainforests are amazing to hike through, and if you have read some of our national parks’ posts , you’ll see why. But viewing the rainforest, in all its grandeur, from treetop level is something truly special. While some people get this experience on adventure tours while zipping along quick cables, an aerial tram offers a more relaxing and slow-paced alternative. We recently rode the tram at Rainforest Adventures in Jaco, and everyone in our family really enjoyed it. In this post, we’ll tell you all about our visit so you can plan your own.

Tram Ride Rainforest Adventures Jaco

While there are a few aerial trams in Costa Rica, the one we are sharing with you today is located along the central Pacific coast . The facility is right outside the beach town of Jaco.

Jaco is a popular tourist destination known for its busy main strip that has all kinds of shops, restaurants, bars, and hotels. Everything is only a few steps away from the beach. And while many tourists stay close to the main area of town, there are some impressive rainforest areas just a short drive away.

Rainforest Adventures Facility

The tram, just 10 minutes into the mountains near Jaco, is owned and operated by a company called Rainforest Adventures. They have another tram on the Atlantic slope of the country, one in Panama, and a few on Caribbean islands as well.

In Jaco, you’ll arrive at the Rainforest Adventures base camp after a short ride along a flat dirt road (no 4×4 needed). This road, while just outside a well-developed area, is nevertheless full of thick, pristine rainforest.

Rainforest Adventures has plenty of parking if you aren’t getting the provided shuttle transportation from your hotel.

Main Facility, Covid Precautions, and Other Tours

Once you arrive at the park entrance, you will check in for your tour. Inside the large open-air building is a big cafeteria and snack bar along with some bathrooms. When we visited during Covid-19 , we had our temperatures checked, wiped our feet on disinfecting mats, and used the provided hand sanitizer before entering with our masks on.

Rainforest Adventures was one of the first tour operators in Costa Rica to receive the Safe Travels Stamp of Approval . This recognition is given by the World Travel and Tourism Council. It is meant to ensure safety protocols, especially related to Covid-19, are well thought out and taken seriously.

The Rainforest Adventures facility offers more than just the aerial tram, so if you are interested, you can do the tram ride as part of a combo. There is zip lining as well as a ropes course that includes suspended bridges, a climbing wall, tight rope, and more. All tours include entrance to the facility’s giant butterfly enclosure.

The entrance to the tram is a minute or so walk from the base camp. Here, you’ll wait briefly for the next tram to arrive. To load you on, a guide will stop the tram. It’s an easy step up and the guide can help you, if needed.

The individual tram cars are similar to those used at some ski resorts. They hang from a sturdy cable, which glides along the connected poles. Unlike at ski resorts, though, these are open air with a canvas cover allowing you to see better and enjoy the outside air.

Trams Rainforest Adventures Jaco

Each tram car has four rows of seats, holding two people each. There is an extra single seat in the back for a guide.

The tram cars felt very safe to us. They are constructed with heavy steel, and the doors have a sturdy latch. The railing was high and the vertical slats were close enough together so that we felt completely safe sitting alongside our sons (16 months and 4.5 years at the time). We just made sure to keep a tight hold of our littlest one.

Since the cars are open air, we would recommend packing anything small into a backpack so you don’t accidentally drop it off the side.

For those who like to take pictures with your phone, a strap like this one , would be nice to have. There were a few times when we wished we had one, especially when trying to snap photos over the edge alongside the kids.

What You’ll See on the Tram

The biggest highlight of the tram ride is the rainforest around you. You’ll glide up the mountain, passing giant trees and hanging vines, and be able to see sweeping views. Along the way, you’ll also see a couple of waterfalls and streams through the rainforest canopy. These are really beautiful from above.

River Flowing Under Tram

The tram cars also get fairly close to some of the tallest trees, allowing you to see the branches and leaves at eye level. Some things you may notice among them are arboreal termite nests, a variety of bromeliads, hanging vines, and colorful flowers. Many of Costa Rica’s trees and vines make interesting seed pods or fruits too, so keep an eye out for those as well.

While it can be more difficult to spot wildlife on the tour, we were lucky to see a toucan as well as many different species of butterfly. Other wildlife like monkeys and sloths do live in the area too, so keep a lookout!

Once you arrive at the top and start heading back down the mountain, you’ll have some impressive views of the valley below and the Pacific Ocean in the background. Altogether, the trip up and back is about one hour.

Ocean View from Rainforest Adventures Tram Jaco

Butterfly Garden and Nearby Trails

Included in the tram tour (and all tours) is a visit to the Rainforest Adventures butterfly enclosure. This large space has lush gardens and a fountain in the center. The tropical flowers and plants inside mimic the butterflies’ natural habitat, and the large mesh dome keeps them inside.

Butterfly Space Rainforest Adventures Jaco

Along the paths inside the butterfly garden, you’ll find some feeders set up. These have fresh fruits that the butterflies love to eat. It also distracts them and allows you to get a closeup view or picture.

Inside the enclosure, the butterflies are constantly reproducing. They lay their eggs on leaves, then new caterpillars hatch, and eventually those caterpillars make cocoons. The staff carefully removes the cocoons from leaves and branches and pins them to a special wall. Here, they can be monitored and viewed safely. When we were there, we saw three or four new butterflies emerging and spreading their wings.

Butterfly Hatching Rainforest Adventures Jaco

Outside the butterfly garden are some more short paths. These are paved and easy to walk. On a short stroll, you can see more colorful flowers like heliconia as well as butterflies and other insects like leaf-cutter ants. We also saw a hummingbird mother and her tiny nest.

Trails Rainforest Adventures Jaco

One section of the gardens has medicinal plants and other fruiting plants like cacao (chocolate).

Finally, there was an area that had some snake enclosures (glassed in). This was closed when we visited but would normally be accessible too.

Planning Your Visit

If you are just planning to do the aerial tram, butterfly garden, and trails, plan to spend a few hours at the facility. This would give you time to go slowly and enjoy it. If you are adding on other activities like the zipline, you’ll need a couple of more hours for that.

Seniors, People with Limited Mobility, and Children

If you’re traveling with seniors, someone with limited mobility, or young children, the aerial tram tour is a great option. There is no minimum age so babies are fine to go.

For those in a wheelchair, the trams cannot hold a wheelchair, but you only need to make a small step up to enter and the guide can completely stop the tram to allow you on.

Other areas of the park are fully handicap accessible, like the trails and butterfly garden. Rainforest Adventures also has a wheelchair on site.

Entering tram Rainforest Adventures Jaco

Food & Drinks

The Rainforest Adventures facility has a large open-air cafeteria with plenty of tables. When we visited, tourism was quite slow due to Covid, so the lunch buffet was closed. Normally the buffet includes traditional-style Costa Rican cuisine . There are vegetarian and vegan options.

There is also a snack bar that is always open, which serves things like hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, smoothies, beer, and other drinks.

What to Bring/Wear

For all tours at the Rainforest Adventures park, you’ll need to wear closed-toed shoes. Flip-flops are not allowed.

We would also recommend bringing some insect repellent, especially in the rainier months (May through November). See our Mosquitoes in Costa Rica post for recommendations.

Long, lightweight pants and a raincoat are a good idea if you are visiting during the rainy season, but shouldn’t be necessary when the weather is warm and sunny. Check out our Packing List post for more clothing tips too.

During Covid-19 travel , you’ll also be required to wear a face mask when inside the facility and when loading/unloading onto the tram or zipline.

When we visited, we wore masks but took them off once we started up the mountain on the tram. Each family or group had their own tram and they are very spaced out. During our visit, the tour was also self-guided, so we didn’t have to worry about another person being alongside us.

Photographer

The staff at the park will take some photos of you during the tour. These are for sale near the cafeteria. Prices vary and they have different packages.

We offer the longest and only guided tram tour in the country. The gondola ride includes a guided natural walk on our paved nature trails, a visit to our beautiful and specialized Butterfly Garden where you´ll be able to learn a lot among their colorful wings, a walk through our orchid garden comprised of orchids rescued from fallen tree trunks and finally a calm walk into our Terrarium where you´ll see many interesting amphibians and reptiles species.

Twenty minutes outside of San Jose you will cross the Continental Divide and enter Braulio Carrillo National Park. After a half hour trip through the park, the bus will reach a 1000 acre private reserve of virgin forest.

Open-sided vehicles shuttle passengers from the parking area to the Visitor’s Center. The shuttle trip provides an introduction to the forest, as visitors pass a small river and numerous tree snags with nesting holes of various birds – the White Hawk is regularly seen here, as well as the Pale-billed Woodpecker and many others.

After a quick briefing on canopy exploration and the construction of the tram, visitors divide into smaller groups for a 45 to 90 minute (optional) nature walk with a trained naturalist guide. The trails are well-groomed and provide an excellent introduction to the rain forest.

Time now to board the Aerial Tram. The Open-sided cable-cars hold 5 passengers and a guide. The guides are quite knowledgeable about flora and fauna. They’ll point out orchids and different species of trees and are quick to identify the calls of the many birds that inhabit this unique environment.

The tram ride lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. The lower, outbound leg of the tram journey takes you skimming over hilltops and in and out of the sub-canopy, a dark world of overburdened tree limbs dripping with mosses, ferns, and orchids. Lianas and vines drape over branches and traverse forest spaces, and act as highways for birds and insects. The ride will stop several times as passengers board at either loading station.

The return leg of the ride reveals the most dramatic portion of the trip as the cars glide on a breath-taking journey through and above the airy canopy.

What to Bring:  sunscreen, hat, raincoat, jacket for the cold.

The 5 Best Places to Go Zip Lining in Monteverde, Costa Rica

M onteverde, Costa Rica is one of the most popular zip-lining destinations in the country. This area consists of a dense cloud forest filled with unique flora and fauna. A zip-lining tour here will take you soaring over the lush ecosystem with an aerial view.

We have gone zip lining in Monteverde several times. And, in our opinion, it is the best place in the country to enjoy this activity. We created this guide to give you info on the best zip-lining tours based on your budget and your desired thrill level, let you know what you can expect, and give you advice on how to have the best overall experience.

So, let’s get to planning your Monteverde zip-lining adventure!

Zip Lining Lingo

Before I go into all the different ziplining options, you first need to know about lingo. That way you will have a better understanding of what I am talking about and can easily book the best adventure for your thrill level.

Platform:  OK this one is kind of obvious. The platform is where you stand before you zip. A guide will be at each platform while you zip line. They will hook you up to the cable and tell you when you are secure and can jump.

Cable:  Cable is the line that you are attached to when zipping from one platform to the other. The length of the zip line cable will vary throughout your tour.

Tarzan Swing:  A Tarzan swing is basically a rope swing from a high platform. Don’t worry, you are harnessed in. The initial drop may take your breath away, but then it is very exhilarating!

Superman Swing:  A Superman swing is when you go zip lining while lying down and looking out over the jungle below. It may seem a bit scary, but the view is definitely amazing! In the picture above you can see my dad being daring and trying out the Superman ziplines in Monteverde.

Rappeling:  Rappeling is when you are attached to a cable and go down the side of a cliff face. In Costa Rica, a lot of the rappelling is done down high waterfalls. This is a popular activity for all you adventure lovers.

Hanging Bridges:  Hanging bridges consist of nature trails and suspension bridges that you can walk over. These bridges vary in length and height but they can guarantee a great view! A lot of zip lining parks also have a section of hanging bridges.

Canopy Tour:  A canopy tour is just what they sometimes call the zip lining tour in Costa Rica. After all, you are getting an overhead tour of the canopy.

Aerial Tram:  An aerial tram is basically like a gondola that takes you up to a higher elevation. This is a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the landscape below.

There are several options for your Monteverde zip line tour. Let’s go through all the best places to find the perfect one for you based on thrill level.

Selvatura Adventure Park

Selvatura is one of the most popular canopy tour parks in Monteverde. It is a good place if it is your first time zip lining and for families with children. We have always had a great experience here.

Number of Platforms

There are 13 cables with a total of 2.2 miles of zip lining. The experience here also includes the option to try a Tarzan swing. For an additional cost you can add a Superman style experience on the last cable.

The Selvatura property has:

A Restaurant:  Serves soups, salads, sandwiches, mains, and desserts

Lockers:  Free to use

and clean restrooms

Other Things to Do

You can add on the option to enjoy…

A Sloth Sanctuary:  You can add a visit to the sloth sanctuary to your Selvatura experience. The sanctuary houses 20 sloths that have been rescued from poachers, habitat destruction, illness, and accidents.

Reptile and Amphibian Exhibition:  For an extra fee you can visit this exhibition. Here you can see lizards, snakes, and frogs, in Selvatura’s custom-built terrariums.

Butterfly Garden:  For an additional fee you can visit the butterfly garden. This facility is home to more than 30 species of Costa Rican butterflies.

Treetop Walkways:  We suggest adding the hanging bridge park to your experience at Selvatura. This consists of 1.9-mile trail through the cloud forest trails. There are 8 bridges ranging from 170ft up to an amazing 560ft in length. You can get some of the most beautiful views of the area from here.

Selvatura has a variety of package options. It is best to check  their website  and find which package is best for you and your travel companions.

Their most comprehensive package is the  All-Day Package . This includes:

  • Canopy Tour
  • Treetop Walkways (Guide not included)
  • The Sloth Sanctuary
  • Butterfly Garden
  • Reptile and Amphibian Exhibition

However, you can also arrange a basic package with just zip lining if you prefer.

Families, first-time zip liners

Children over the age of 4 are able to participate in a zipline tour here.

Transportation

Free transportation from your hotel and back within downtown Monteverde is included.

For more information and to reserve ahead of time you can check out  the Selvatura Park website here .

Booking Your Adventure

The best way to book this is directly through the Selvatura website. They offer the best rates and package varieties. Keep in mind that they allow free cancellation up to 72 hours before your tour.

It is possible to book this activity on Viator. Viator is typically our preferred way to book tours in Costa Rica. However, since Selvatura offers transportation, has a good cancellation policy, and has a secure on-site booking system; it is best to book directly on their site.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

Treetopia Park used to be called Sky Adventures Monteverde. So, if you see reviews for Sky Adventures or Sky Trek somewhere, they are talking about the same place. They also have. allocation in La Fortuna which kept the original name.

I believe it is still run by the same amazing company, just with a new name and branding.

Treetopia stands out as a great place to zip line because of their close attention to the guest experience.

For example, they have an effortless braking system that doesn’t require you to use your hand, they pride themselves in safety, and consider themselves a family-friendly park.

7 cables ranging from 460 to 2460 feet in length with a total distance of 1.9 miles.

There is a on-site restaurant and cafe, restrooms, and free lockers for guests to use.

This place is super fun and has different experiences than you can have at any other park. Besides zip lining, it is also possible to book an adventure that includes:

Hanging Bridges (Skywalk) : You can visit the hanging bridges with a guide or on your own. This bridge walk consists of 6 suspension bridges, ranging from 157 to 774 feet. In total, it is a 1.7-mile trail.

Cableway (Treetram) : The cableway is a gondola-like ride up to an elevated point with a guide. Here you can enjoy sweeping views of the cloud forest canopy and learn about the surrounding environment.

Tree Climbing : They also offer a tree climbing adventure. You will get to climb up 5 different trees while harnessed in for safety. At the top, you will get to jump in a controlled free fall descent.

Treetopia offers the chance to customize your experience exactly as you would like. Check out their  Build Your Bundle page  for more info.

Families that are looking for a fun and safe adventure. Children over the age of 5 are able to participate in zip lining here.

The shuttle service from Monteverde area hotels is not included. However, it can be added on for $10 per person roundtrip.

Additionally, there is a large parking lot that is available free of charge if you have a rental car. The lot is secure, but please don’t leave anything of value in your vehicle just in case.

The best way to book this activity is directly through the Treetopia website. They have a secure booking platform. You can cancel your reservation up to 48 hours before your tour.

100% Aventura

Aventura Adventure Park  is perfect for all of you who are looking for a more extreme adventure.

10 cables (2 are Superman cables), a hammock bridge, one rappel, and one ride on the Tarzan swing. This place is home to the longest zipline in Costa Rica at 5220 ft (1590 m).

100% Aventura also offers a hanging bridge park with guided tours. This consists of about two miles of trails with 8 hanging bridges.

For this experience, we suggest booking through Viator. The price on Viator is the same as directly on their website.

However, with Viator, you have the added bonus of being able to cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance.

Note that transportation is not included. You will need to drive to the park yourself.

Extremo Park

This is the best place for all of you looking for an extremely thrilling zip-lining experience. If this is your first-time zip lining and you are a bit wimpy about heights, this is probably not the place for you.

Number of Platforms:

This zip line experience includes some extreme activities that none of the other parks have.

There are; 11 cables, one Tarzan swing, one rappel, one Subterranean Superman Tunnel, and one aerial Superman.

The cables total over 2.5 miles in length, making it the longest canopy in Costa Rica.

They also offer horseback riding tours and wildlife night tours.

For this experience, we suggest booking directly through the Monteverde Extremo website.

The Original Canopy Tour

The zip lining experience.

You will start your trip with a zipline tour over the lush Monteverde canopy.

Next, you will get to rappel 150 feet down to the forest floor.

A ladder system through the middle of a tree will bring you back up into the treetops. Then, you have the option of enjoying a thrilling Tarzan swing free-fall experience.

This adventure includes transportation from your Monteverde area hotel. All you need to do is input your pickup location at checkout.

I suggest booking this activity through Viator. It has amazing reviews and is a well-established company, but their website is not very well designed or updated. Viator seems to be their main way of making reservations.

Map of the Zip Lining Parks

People often get confused because some things in Monteverde are listed as being in Santa Elena.

Monteverde and Santa Elena are basically the same place.

Monteverde is the overall area, Santa Elena is the name of the main town. So, people use both names somewhat interchangeably.

Here is a map of all the zip line parks to give you a better understanding of their locations.

What to Bring and Wear

Here is everything we suggest bring and wearing on your canopy tour experience.

What to Wear

  • A rain jacket
  • Lightweight pants : I don’t recommend shorts because they aren’t the best with the harness. I usually opt for sports leggings, but breathable hiking pants would also be good.
  • A breathable shirt : Usually it’s a bit cool in Monteverde so I usually go for a long sleeve shirt.
  • Close-toed shoes : I usually go for Keen shoes, but sneakers or hiking boots would also be fine. I find that the more lightweight  footwear  the more comfortable your feet will be for this adventure.

Keep in mind that you will be wearing a helmet. So, ladies, don’t put your hair up nicely that day.

What to Bring

Most places have lockers for free or to rent for a small fee. We suggest bringing…

  • A change of clothes : If you would like to go do something else after. Plus, you may get wet if it is a rainy day and want to change.
  • A towel : It might not be necessary, but if its raining a lot you might want to dry off. We like  microfiber towels  for Costa Rica because they can easily fit in your luggage.
  • An I.D. : Some places ask for it when you sign safety waiver forms. I usually just bring a photocopy of my passport and leave the original in my hotel safe.
  • A full water bottle : You can not bring this while zip lining, but it is nice to hydrate with a  full waterbottle  once your adventure is done.
  • A Dry Bag : We love our  dry bag backpack  for all our adventures in Costa Rica. But, it is especially great in Monteverde where there is always some rain.

Our Personal Experience Zip Lining in Monteverde

We have gone zip lining here a few times, but I would like to share our first experience to give you a bit more info on what you can expect.

We went zip lining in Monteverde while traveling with a large group of our family and friends after our wedding. In total there were 13 of us looking to tackle a zip lining adventure.

So, the day before our Monteverde canopy tour adventure we all sat down and chose our zip line park of choice. The owner of our hotel strongly recommended Selvatura Park for beginners and Extremo Park for more action.

In the end, all the Germans (except for Thomas who stuck with me) chose Extremo Park and the US crew all chose Selvatura Park. That should tell you something about the adventure level of the Germans vs. the people from the US. 😉

The next day we woke up early to wait for our free transportation to the parks. We opted to go zip lining around 9am so that we could beat the crowds and also so we would still have the rest of our day to do other things.

The buses picked us up about an hour before our scheduled zip lining launch time (probably not the correct terminology haha). This allowed us plenty of time to pick up other zipliners, drive the 30 minutes to the park, and gear up.

Once we arrived at Selvetura we checked in at the front desk. It was there that they asked us if anyone in our group wanted to try the Superman swing for the final cable for a small extra charge. Thomas and my dad both opted to pay the additional fee for the Superman swing.

Next, we put our stuff in the free lockers and headed to the gear room. Oh, and we made sure to use the bathroom one last time before we got our gear on. We were then given hard hats, gloves, and harnesses which a Selvetura employee helped us put on.

Then we were off! We had a short hike to where the first platform was, listened to instructions on the safety measures, and tried to shake our nerves.

The first cable was really short and was meant to give you a little introduction into what you are doing.

After that, the cables got longer. I liked the longer cables because it gave us a chance to really enjoy the spectacular views.

There were also some cables that you could do as a couple.

There was also one in which there were two cables next to each other that you could do as two couples racing.

Then we came to the Tarzan swing. My dad, one cousin, and I all sat this one out. However, the rest of our group went for it. It was so fun to watch everyone’s reactions as they jumped. I’ve never heard my sister scream like she did as she had her free fall from the platform.

We all had a lot of fun and felt completely safe and secure the entire time. The tour guides were also excellent. They had fun with it but were very professional as well. I highly recommend going  ziplining in Monteverde at Selvetura . You’ll have a blast!

When we reunited with the German crew they had nothing but great things to say about Extremo Park as well. However, I’m happy I stuck with Selvetura because some of the things they talked about seemed a bit above my thrill level at that time.

So, in my opinion, there is no “best option” for a ziplining tour here. All of the places I listed are great. Instead, you should choose your adventure based on your personal needs.

What to Know Before Zip Lining

  • Tipping is not required , but if you have a really good experience with a particular guide, feel free to give them a small tip in US dollars or Costa Rican colones.
  • Spanish is the main language  in Costa Rica, but don’t worry, the guides at all the main zip lining places will speak English.
  • Keep in mind that the motto for life here is “ Pura Vida ”. This is used to mean “everything is good.” However, it also translates into the lifestyle. Things sometimes run a better slower and more relaxed than you might be used to.
  • If your plans are already set, it’s a good idea to book your canopy tour ahead of time. In the rainy season you will have no problem booking your zip line adventure the night before but during the dry season (end of December until mid-May) things can book out ahead of time. Just be warned that some of the companies don’t have any cancellation policy.
  • We suggest booking your zip lining adventure for the morning. These parks fill up later in the day.
  • All of the companies I listed are very reputable and have great safety records. However, if something doesn’t feel safe or right to you, always trust your instincts. There is no shame in bowing out of an activity if you don’t feel comfortable. Along with that, always check everything quickly yourself. The guides are good, but it is always best to double check that they hooked you up properly.
  • Most of these places allow young kids to participate as well. Smaller children will usually be harnessed in with an adult or with the guide. Each place has a different minimum age limit.
  • Some of the adventure parks have a maximum weight limit. This is typically about 250 to 300 pounds.

What to Do After

There are so many fun things to do in Monteverde after your zipline experience! Some of the most popular activities are…

Visit the Ficus Tree : This is a fun FREE activity.  Head to this spot on Google Maps  and walk into the woods until you see this massive ficus tree.

In the past, you could climb all the way to the top, but I guess it is a bit of a safety risk. Now you can only climb up a bit and they blocked the rest with concrete.

Hike at Santa Elena Reserve:  The  La Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena  is a private reserve with hiking trails. This is a great way to enjoy the cloud forest from the forest floor. It is located next to a lot of the zip-lining parks. Find out more here.

Take a Wildlife Night Tour:  These tours are great for seeing night active wildlife with an experienced naturalist guide. This guided tour includes the use of a headlamp and sometimes includes transportation from your Monteverde area hotel. You can find out more with our  guide to Monteverde night tours .
