Since 2004, our unique blend of custom itineraries and personal service has been delivering perfect cycling vacations for those who want to explore on their own terms.

Our Self-Guided tours are great for singles, couples and smaller groups who enjoy exploring independently with support in the background. Our Private Guided tours are great for larger groups looking for full time support. With all our tours, you choose your start date, the length of your tour, and your preferred style of accommodation.

All our tours are private . During your transfers, bike fitting, and route briefings, your guide is focused on just you rather than having to cater to a large group. Each day, we provide several ride options from leisure to challenge.

Our tours are Climate Neutral . We believe it is our responsibility to help protect the beautiful areas that our tours visit as well as the climate that supports them. For this reason, all our tours are carbon neutral. We also donate 10% of our profits to non-profit organizations in the communities in which we operate.

What to look for in a touring bike.

The allure of the open road is one of cycling’s enduring themes. Touring by bicycle allows for this on a grand scale, travelling for several days, often in far-flung places with all your kit strapped to the bike. Of course, micro-adventures closer to home can be just as much fun and still keep the spirit of adventure alive.

Whether you’re planning an expedition abroad or fancy exploring more local roads in far greater detail, a touring bike is the ideal tool for the job. Designed for cycling long distances in comfort, the bikes should be both stable and reliable in their handling, as well as providing all the mounts you need for pannier racks and bags and mudguards . Self-sufficiency is one of the tenets of cycling touring, so the bikes are usually designed with ease of maintenance in mind, too.

The good news for touring cyclists is that the range of bikes available to cater for their needs has grown substantially in the last few years.

Genesis Tour de Fer 30 touring bike

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This is a bike that's been created exclusively to provide a comfortable and practical ride for a touring cyclist. The Reynolds 725 Heat-Treated Chromoly frame promises a springy ride and an incredibly strong base.

The 160mm rotor mechanical disc brakes are a more modern introduction with a nod to practicality, especially in the wet. Although we’ve found mechanical TRP Spyre brake calipers aren’t quite as powerful or as easy to modulate as a hydraulic brakeset, they are easy to adjust and highly reliable – perfect for a long-distance tour.

A 10-speed Shimano Tiagra drivetrain is about right for a bike at this price point, but in our experience, a 50/39/30 crankset provides gears that are just a bit too big for cycle touring – particularly over hilly terrain. 

But you can always swap this out for a smaller ringed option down the line. We find that with a cassette of 11-34t, going for a granny ring of 26t is generally a good bet.

We’ve always found Schwalbe’s Marathon tyres to be highly puncture resistant and with a good wear rate. In 35c, these are capable of traversing broken roads and tamer gravel, but if you’re planning on spending a large amount of time off road you would want something a bit plumper.

Handily, this bike come with many of the accessories we think are a must. Firstly, mudguards, but also dynamo powered front and rear lights, bottle cages and the Tubus pannier racks front and rear.

Surly Disc Trucker

A spin-off of Surly's much-revered Long Haul Trucker, the Disc Trucker keeps many of the much-loved versatility and can-do attitude, but this time with the addition of mechanical disc brakes and thru-axles – unlike the Genesis Tour de Fer 30 which has disc brakes and QR axles.

Opinion is a little split on thru-axles for touring – if you have any catastrophic issues with your hubs in more remote countries, you're unlikely to be able to find a replacement locally. That said, those kind of hub issues are quite rare and if it does happen you can always get a replacement sent out. For the improved alignment between the rotor and the caliper, we think the benefits outweigh the negatives.

A multitude of braze-on mount means the Disc Trucker is capable of running front and rear bags, full-coverage fenders, two water bottles, a spare spoke and even a pump peg. However, in not coming with these accessories, you will have to factor these into the cost, making the value for money a little less than the Genesis Tour de Fer 30 or the Kona Sutra.

With both 26" and 700c wheel build options available, the Disc Trucker can be as adventurous as you choose. The 26" (in sizes 42-58cm) is capable of taking up to 2.1" tires, while the 700c version (in sizes 56-64cm) has room for up to 42mm tires — both with fenders.

Although touring bikes generally do have a more relaxed position than a typical road bike, designed as they are for comfortably covering long distances, the Disc Trucker does have a particularly high front end. This isn't necessarily a problem, but if you are coming from a road cycling background, you may find just such an elevated position a little uncomfortable 

Made from a CroMoly Steel, the Disc Trucker comes equipped with a Shimano Alivio/Sora drivetrain, with the 48/36/26 triple Alivio crankset and 11-34 9-speed Shimano cassette provides a gearing range we find to be a great balance between top-end speed and low-end winching – particularly if you’re planning on maxing out the rider and kit weight limit of 161kg (355lb).

Kona Sutra All Road touring bike

The gloss black Sutra is made from Kona 's Cromoly steel frame and is kitted out with smooth-rolling Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 700x40c tires on WTB STi23 rims, which are now tubeless-compatible.

The current model has replaced the previous Shimano Deore 3x10 drivetrain with 2x10 chainset from Shimano's GRX gravel range. It's a move that's unlikely to please the touring purists. The 46/30t chainrings are matched with a 11-36t cassette, which sees the bike's gearing range reduced. It should still see you up the steep climbs, just perhaps not in as much comfort as before.

Gone too are the bar-end shifters, replaced with Shimano 10-speed Tiagra road shifters. Again it's quite the change, moving the Sutra from a traditional tourer into a far more modern interpretation. It reduces some of the bike's previous mechanical simplicity, which is appealing if your tours are long and overseas. That said the move to STI levers will appeal if you're used to riding a regular bike.

Another nod to modernity are the TRP disc brakes, which are blend of mechanical and hydraulic, and the frame's thru-axles.

With a Brooks B17 leather saddle, mudguards and a front pannier rack finishing off this tourer, this good-looking bike oozes style.

The leather Brooks saddle does require a bit more care than what you might be used to – it need to be kept covered from heavy rain and needs a semi regular application of cream to keep the leather supple. But by functioning essentially as a hammock, it is exceptionally comfortable and only gets better over time as it moulds to your shape – it wears in, rather than out..

Ridgeback Voyage

Classic styling never goes out of date - and the vintage-looking Voyage has got it by the bucket load, though a redesign means that modern tech has not been overlooked.

The Ridgeback Voyage uses Reynolds 520 tubing for the frame, with a CroMoly steel fork. A rack and full mudguards (fenders) come as standard. 

The Shimano 48/36/26t triple chainset paired with an 11-34 cassette offers a good range of gearing although with relatively large jumps between the gears due to having just nine gears at the rear. 

We don’t find this to be too much of an issue when taking it steady on a cycle tour but would prefer something a little tighter if multiple very high mileage days are planned.

Shifting and braking is taken care of by Shimano's reliable Sora levers and Tektro cantilever rim brakes. The latter certainly help make the Voyage a maintenance-friendly machine - easy to maintain and find replaces for, even in remote locations - although disc brakes may be a preferred choice for all-weather tourers.

Alex rims with a high spoke count are pretty dependable, even if not the flashiest and fitted with 32c Continental Contact tyres, they can handle a little off road, but are best suited to the tarmac.  

Trek 520 disc touring bike

Constructed from Trek's CroMoly steel, the frame has been designed around disc brakes and fitted with a rack and fenders mounts.

The Bontrager Affinity rims are tubeless-ready, which might be worth setting up if you want a bit of a faster ride when commuting. But for long-term touring it’s generally best to stick with inner tubes so as to avoid the added complication of sealant drying out. Bontrager’s 38c H1 hard-case Ultimate tyres offer good puncture resistance themselves.

The drivetrain is a mixture of Shimano parts with Sora shifters. The crankset is a triple, with 48/36/26 tooth chainrings, and the cassette is an 11-36 so you'll have ample gears when the road goes up. TRP Spyre C 2.0 mechanical disc mechanical discs look after stopping.

However, with only nine sprockets on the cassette, the jumps between the gears are a little large, as with the Ridgeback Voyage. But if this does cause you an issue, and if you find yourself not using all of the gears, you could fit a tighter range cassette for smaller jumps.

Like the Genesis Tour de Fer 30, the wheel axles are QR, which can make getting the rotor and caliper aligned properly a little more difficult than with a thru-axle system

The overall weight comes in at 14.26 kg / 31.4 lbs in a size 57, which is lighter than some of the more traditional options.

Cube Travel Pro Trapeze touring bike

Cube offers its Travel Pro tourer in both a traditional crossbar and step-through frame design, with the latter making mounting and dismounting this robust, aluminum bike easy and convenient.

The convenience theme is carried through much of the bike. It's equipped with a Shimano Nexus internal hub gear system and a Gates CDN Belt Drive system which offers super low maintenance compared with a more traditional chain and derailleur system.

With this eight-speed hub, the jumps between the gears is a little larger and the overall range a little lower than you can get with a derailleur system, and it's not quite as efficient. But that said, if you're planning on taking it steady on your cycle tour, those points are pretty immaterial compared to the benefit of much lower maintenance.  

There's plenty of clearance for extra-wide tires and the wheels are currently wrapped in Schwalbe's Marathon Almotion 29x2.15in rubber.

Finishing off this functional tourer are full-length fenders, an adjustable CUBE stand Pro kickstand, a Knog Oi bell, lights (front and rear), and a semi-integrated carrier for pannier bags; these features will have you covered for any adventure.

Salsa Marrakesh

The Marrakesh is designed to take you touring wherever you wish — including a trip around the world if necessary. The frame is built from 4130 CroMoly tubing and has a serious array of mounts. There's room for up to five bottle cages thanks to extra fork mounts plus it comes fitted with front and rear racks. There's even a mount to carry a spare spoke.

Elsewhere there are bar-end shifters and a 3x9-speed Shimano Alivio groupset. The gearing range is designed to get you up the steep stuff even when fully loaded thanks to 48/36/36 triple chainring paired with an 11-36t cassette. The shifters also make roadside maintenance a little easier.

Its world-touring credentials are further aided by its generous tire clearance - 700 x 40mm even with mudguards (fenders), and comes stock with Maxxis Roamer 42mm tires. This means you should eat up the miles in comfort even when the road gets rough.

It's difficult to lay out specific criteria when it comes to choosing a touring bike because the beauty of touring is that it can be whatever you want it to be – there is no single best touring bike for everyone, what is best for you depends on the type of tours you want to go on. However, there are key elements to consider when selecting your two-wheeled riding buddy, which will enable you to get the best touring bike for you.

Touring bike frame

If you're planning a longer trip, and intend the bike to be used primarily for such adventures, then the resilience and comfort of steel is a sensible choice. As such, most of the best touring bikes will feature this metal. The amount you're willing to invest will dictate the weight, strength and character of the steel you end up with.

When looking at steel touring bikes, expect to see the word 'Chromoly' a lot. This is a form of low alloy steel that is used when strength is particularly important. It takes its name from two of the primary alloying (mixing of metals) elements used: “chromium” and “molybdenum”.

If you're planning on using the bike for touring and other duties: club runs, commutes, shorter rides where speed might be more in your interest, consider aluminum or carbon .

Bikes suitable for touring will have a relaxed geometry: a shorter top tube and taller stack to put the rider in a more relaxed position. The wheelbase will be longer, to create a feeling of stability. You'll also notice that the chainstays are longer - this means panniers can be mounted without a chance of clipping your heels and it allows for better distribution when panniers are full.

Touring bike wheels

Elsewhere in the cycling world, we talk about low weight and aerodynamics when it comes to bicycle wheels. And sure, if you're aiming to break a world record on your cycle tour then those are probably still very important areas to consider.

However, if you mainly want to get to somewhere rather far away, and you'd like to arrive there with a wheel that's still true and contains the same number of spokes you left with, then a strong wheel is what you desire. Look for a higher spoke count that you might opt for on a speedy road bike.

The best touring bikes will generally have at least 36 spokes per wheel, tandem touring bike can even go as high as 48. 

Touring bike tyres

It's incredible how much difference a set of tyres can make to a bike. The frame can be designed with comfort top of the agenda, but put on some narrow rubber shoes and pump them up to the wrong tyre pressure and you'll be bumping about all over the road.

Most touring cyclists will want to go for wider tyres - 28mm+, when compared with their road racing cousins. The further off the beaten track you want to go, the wider they should be. If you plan on tackling some light trails, look for 32mm+.

Touring bike brakes

Traditionally, touring bikes had rim brakes and these will certainly do the job for most road-based tours. However, disc brakes do provide far superior stopping power, especially in the wet, and they are now more common than rim brake on the best touring bikes

Since disc brakes don't rely upon the rim to bring the bike to a halt, they also reduce the risk of the rims becoming worn through debris building up on the pads.

Add in that many touring cyclists are carrying luggage, therefore adding to the overall load, powerful brakes that work in all weathers do seem like a sensible addition. However, not everyone likes the appearance of disc brakes on a traditional steel machine and the pads are a tiny bit harder to replace and set up, which is worth considering if you're maintaining your bike on the road.

Luggage and Lights on a touring bike

A purpose-built touring bike will come with pannier racks fitted, as well as fenders and perhaps even built-in lights. These all add to the overall weight, but if the intended purpose requires them, it's no bother.

If you plan to use the bike for other purposes, like group rides, then you may want to look for a bike that comes with eyelets for guards and racks, so that you can remove and fit them as and when.

There's a lot of clever luggage solutions around these days, such as frame bags and oversized saddlebags , that allow you to do away with panniers if you'd rather distribute weight differently.

A Beginner’s Guide to Bike Touring

How do you plan a bike touring route?

Which bike should you ride on a bike tour, what should you wear on a bike tour, what gear should you bring on a bike tour, how do you pack for a bike tour.

If that’s what you’re after, keep reading to find out what you need to consider when it comes to where to go, which bike to ride, what to pack, and how to approach your first self-supported bike tour.

What is bike touring?

While there’s no standard definition of bike touring, it generally means riding your bike from destination to destination over a period of at least several days, if not weeks, or even months.

While you can do a supported bike tour, where a company or professional guide gives you a route , provides support along the way, and arranges your meals and lodging, you can also do a self-supported bike tour, where you’re carrying your own gear. If you plan to camp and prepare your own meals, that includes a tent, sleeping bag, and a campstove.

With the exploding popularity of gravel cycling in recent years, you’ve probably heard a lot about bikepacking , which differs slightly from bike touring. While the two certainly overlap, “bike touring generally tends to cover longer distances, mostly on paved roads, and carrying more gear, often in panniers, whereas bikepacking tends to be shorter trips, ridden on more remote roads and challenging trails, and featuring a lightweight, streamlined bag setup,” says bike touring expert and video creator Sheelagh Daly .

When it comes to deciding where you want to go, how much ground you want to cover each day, and how long your tour will last, the options are limitless. Below are a few factors to consider that will help narrow things down.

“If all of this feels overwhelming, you don’t have to start from scratch,” says Daly. She suggests exploring pre-constructed routes online , which will likely have a GPX file or a paper map to follow, signage to help you stay on track, and easily accessible resources such as food, water , and bike shops en route.

Other resources to help you plan include Google Maps, searching bike touring Facebook groups, or searching in an app like Komoot or Ride with GPS to see what other riders did in a particular area, says Daly, who has explored multiple continents by bike.

“It’s helpful to remember that no route-creating app is perfect,” Daly says. “Road conditions can change, construction can pop up, or an app can deem a road okay for cyclists that you do not feel safe on. That’s why I’ll often punch in where I’m heading from and to in two different apps. In this way, I can compare them and choose the one that feels best, while potentially having a back up if needed.”

Personal preferences

Think about what you value as you look at different routes, suggests Macs Adventure sales specialist Gavin Hermann. How much will road quality impact your enjoyment of the ride? Are you a foodie who wants to explore the local culinary scene? Do you want to be accessible to hotels? Would you rather explore the mountains or the coast? Are there certain historical or natural landmarks you’d like to include? All of these questions should come into play as you decide where to go, says Hermann.

Your fitness level

As you plan your route, consider how fit you are and how much you want to suffer during your bike tour. That means being realistic about how you’ll handle significant elevation gains and/or high mileage days , especially if you’re on a tight timeline and don’t have the flexibility to take a shorter day or a day off if you’re fatigued or not feeling well.

You also need to decide where you want to stay each night, says Daly. Before planning your route, determine whether you’re looking for campsites, hostels, hotels, or a mix of all three. She also reminds would-be self-supported touring cyclists to think ahead about where you plan to get your food and water, and to plan a route accordingly.

“It’s also important to consider what types of roads you want to be on,” says Daly. Think about whether you prefer dirt roads versus paved roads, or busy roads with wider shoulders to quieter roads with small or no shoulders. Then ask yourself what types of roads your bike and set up are best suited for, she says.

Finally, look at whether there are any safety considerations on these roads or in the region, says Daly. Factors to consider may include crime rates, wildlife, and natural disasters that may affect the region you aim to explore.

“There’s a saying in the bike touring community that I love: ‘The best bike is the one you have,’” says Daly. In other words, there’s no need to worry about being on the “perfect” bike. As long as your bike is safe and comfortable, Daly suggests using whatever you have available.

That said, if you have a few options at your disposal, here’s what different types of bikes have to offer.

Touring bikes

“Touring bikes are going to be a hybrid between road bikes and hardtail mountain bikes ,” says Hermann. As such, the frame will generally be heavier and the tires will be wider than a traditional road bike, making them sturdier and well-equipped to carry heavier loads. And with mounts built into the frame, they make it easy to carry all your essentials.

This is the most efficient option if your tour will mainly be on well-maintained roads, says Hermann. “You will get the most out of each pedal stroke because you are going to be riding in a more aggressive stance. You will have handlebar drops and typically have two chainrings (one large and one small) which will give you the ability to maintain a more efficient cadence ,” he says.

That said, they aren’t designed to be loaded with gear, and will feature much narrower tires than a gravel or touring bike, which isn’t as comfortable on dirt roads or gravel paths.

Gravel bikes

Gravel bikes are heavier and therefore slower than a road bike; however, with wider tires, they provide more stability on varying terrain, says Hermann. They can also be great for carrying gear.

“Most gravel bikes come with mounting points built into the frame so you can attach frame bags thus making for a more efficient way to travel if you plan on bringing clothing, shoes, repair kits, etc with you while you ride,” says Hermann.

If you’re comfortable in the saddle, you might not notice any bike seat pain , but if you’re not, it can ruin your trip. So, make sure you’re wearing the right shorts. “Invest in a good chamois [padded cycling shorts] that has been tested before setting off on your journey,” says Hermann.

You’ll also want to avoid wearing clothes that absorb moisture or cause chafing . “Always wear quick-drying clothing made of either synthetic or wool material. This goes for biking shorts, shirt, socks, gloves, and any layer that will be touching your body,” say Hermann. “The exception to this rule is a rain jacket , which will be made of a weather resistant shell that has a waterproof membrane.”

It’s also important that you feel good in whatever you bring. “Choose clothes you’re going to enjoy wearing, because you may be in them for many days,” says Daly. Not only should they be comfortable, but they should be clothes you’ve worn on the bike before. The last thing you want on a multi-day tour is unexpected chafing, itching, or other textile-related issues.

And whatever you do, bring plenty of layers so you’re ready for all kinds of conditions. Daly reminds readers to research the weather you can expect along your route and “plan for the worst.” That means not just planning for wet conditions, but also the cold temperatures at mountaintops and the sun exposure you’ll experience all day.

As you would on any bike ride, make sure you have everything you need to fix a flat tire . That includes at least one replacement tube, a pump or a CO2 cartridge, tire levers, tire boot, and a patch kit. It’s also worth bringing a small first aid kit, says Hermann.

For general repairs and maintenance , Daly recommends a bike repair kit including chain lube , a rag, zip ties, a multi-tool, and duct tape. And depending on how long you’ll be away and how remote you’ll be, consider bringing spare parts. “Most importantly, work with your local bike shop or bike co-op to make sure you know how to use your kit,” says Daly. Your tools are useless if you don’t feel comfortable putting them into action.

If you’re camping, bring a reliable tent and sleeping bag, says Daly, adding that it’s even better if you have a chance to practice using them ahead of your trip.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, make sure you know where you’re going and how to get there before you begin. “This can be as simple as a paper map with a waterproof cover, or an app like Komoot or Ride With GPS on your phone. You can also use a computer such as a Wahoo or Garmin,” says Daly. Whatever system you use, consider using another system as backup, as technology can fail.

Finally, don’t forget your basic safety items, such as a good helmet , a reflective vest, and reliable front and rear lights , says Daly.

“In terms of bags, we are blessed with an abundance of options,” says Daly. Whether you opt for panniers, trailers, frame bags, fork packs, saddle bags , handlebar bags, or some combination, you’ll find something that works for you.

If your bike can accommodate a rear rack, Daly suggests a simple option of a pair of rear panniers and a handlebar bag. “The panniers give you space to take a few extra things as you figure out what you need or don’t, and the handlebar bag balances out the weight a little and gives you a spot to access your most important items quickly,” she says, adding that she always goes with a waterproof option to keep her belongings from getting wet or damaged.

Whatever you choose, remember to check your bike’s dimensions against the dimensions of any potential storage systems to ensure they’re compatible before you buy, says Hermann.

E-bikes are surging in popularity and for good reason: they allow you to travel further and faster without having to break much of a sweat. They’re an ideal and accessible way to see more of America – and these brilliant tours are a great place to start. From small-group adventure trips to guided city tours, here are our favorite e-bike tours throughout the US.

Small-Group E-Bike Adventure Tour through Hidden Santa Fe, New Mexico

A treasure trove of Indigenous artifacts, desert-like southwestern landscapes and fascinating Spanish forts await you on this three-and-a-half hour guided tour. Run by Heritage Inspirations , the trip aims to uncover lesser-known gems in the New Mexico capital, all with the ease of battery-assisted bikes – which come in an aesthetically pleasing mint green color.

Starting at the Cross of the Martyrs in Fort Marcy Park (pictured), cyclists will pedal their way through the city, visiting attractions including the Randall Davey Audubon Center, the stunning River Park and the hip Railyard District. According to recent Tripadvisor reviews , guides are highly knowledgeable, and the tour takes guests along quieter streets, while thorough lessons in how to use the e-bikes are provided. 

17-Mile Drive Tour, Big Sur, California

Although it’s better known as a road trip destination, California’s wild and windswept Big Sur coastline is perfect for exploring by e-bike. This well-planned tour , which takes you along an ultra-scenic 17-mile section of the road in around two and a half hours, is a great way to experience some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes along this storied route.

Beginning at Asilomar State Beach, you’ll learn the history of this beautiful surfing beach before hopping onto your e-bike and cycling along the rugged coastline towards the start of 17-Mile Drive. Memorable stops along the way include Lone Cypress (pictured) – a starkly beautiful Monterey cypress set on its own headland jutting out to sea – as well as the pristine stretch of sand at Carmel Bay and Bird Rock point, where you’ll get to watch sea lions frolicking in the water. 

3-hour Guided Wine Country Tour in Sonoma on Electric Trike, California

Although they offer something a little different from the conventional e-biking experience, the e-trikes provided by Pushpak Motors are a fun and environmentally friendly way to explore California’s wine country. With space for two riders apiece, these three-wheeled electric trikes will whizz you past scenic vineyards in no time – with plenty of stops along the way.

And it’s not just sightseeing you’ll get to do on this no-holds-barred tour. Over the course of three hours, guests can enjoy stops for wine and cheese tasting at prized local wineries. If you want a little more time to relax and enjoy the views (and wine), book onto the more elaborate five-hour tour, which includes an additional winery visit and plenty more time to explore lesser-known roads.  

Fat Tire E-Bike Tour through Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Covering more than 500 square miles of Hawaii’s Big Island, including two active volcanoes (Kīlauea and Mauna Loa), Volcanoes National Park is jam-packed with awe-inspiring landscapes. And what better way to take them in than on an electric bike? Volcano Ohana offers a three-hour experience on its trademark fat tire e-bikes, which are just the thing for navigating the region’s challenging volcanic terrain. 

Asheville Historic Downtown Guided Electric Bike Tour, North Carolina

Surrounded by the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains and full of historic attractions, Asheville is a great city to discover by e-bike.  The Flying Bike  offers a three-hour tour of downtown, allowing you to learn about the city’s inspiring architecture, discover its fast-changing arts and cultural scene and pick up some brilliant recommendations from local guides. 

Half-Day Electric Bike Tour of Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, Nevada

With the option to take either a guided or self-guided tour via e-bike, Escape Adventures ’ half-day experience is an ideal way to see this National Conservation Area. Recent Tripadvisor reviewers have praised the tours’ organization and the quality of the bikes, with many reporting that the added help of an e-bike was necessary to manage the hills along the route.

Guided E-bike tour of downtown St Petersburg, Florida

Tucked between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, St Petersburg is one of Florida’s most charming cities and it’s perfect for some pedal-powered adventures. With Bay E-Bikes’ downtown tour , a local expert will take you around the city’s most noteworthy attractions, including colorful murals, waterfront parks and St Pete Pier.

The family-friendly three-hour tour, which has received rave reviews on Tripadvisor , includes bike, helmet and lock rental, as well as drop-off and pick-up. Ketchikan Electric Bike and Rainforest Hike Ecotour, Alaska

Taking visitors around the most scenic parts of Ketchikan – famously the entrance to the Inside Passage – it includes a journey down the so-called ‘Road to Nowhere’ and a guided hike through the Tongass National Forest.

You’ll get the chance to spot some incredible wildlife, including porpoises, seals and sea lions, along the coastal section of the route. At 9:25 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Lithuanian ultra-endurance racer Justinas Leveika reached Antelope Wells, New Mexico, to set a new record on the 2,700-mile Tour Divide route with a time of 13 days, 2 hours, and 16 minutes (13:02:16), winning the race over the chasing Ulrich Bartholmoes, a role reversal from the 2023 race where Bartholmoes took the top honors over Leveika.

Since 2016, fans of Tour Divide have watched the late Mike Hall’s record dot blaze a path in front of every year’s racers, ever consistent and unrelenting. After eight years of the Mike’s record time of 13 days, 22 hours, 51 minutes being out of reach for everyone, someone has finally bested the time. At the beginning of this year’s race, with Bartholmoes and Leveika returning—who’d both challenged for the record last go around—it seemed that barring course reroutes or atrocious conditions, someone was going to set a new Tour Divide record. It was just a question of whom and by how much.

Leveika’s time shaved 20 hours off the old standard, a feat made even more impressive by the addition of several singletrack sections throughout New Mexico that most certainly added time and fairly horrendous weather throughout the northern half of Montana, where riders were pelted with rain and snow for multiple days on end.

For all practical purposes, Leveika led the race from start to finish, consistently in front of record pace for most of the event. He gave a master class on finding the perfect balance between minimal sleep and fast pedaling to best his 2023 time of 14 days, 16 hours, 57 minutes by over a day and a half.

Leveika made several all-night pushes over the course of the route to reach certain destinations before stopping, including a big push to Flagg Ranch in Wyoming and another to get to Brush Mountain Lodge in Colorado. He consistently slept less than his competitors while keeping a similar average moving pace of 8.6 miles per hour.

Leveika maintained a fairly steady gap over the ever-persistent Bartholmoes for most of the race, but it seemed as if things would come back together in New Mexico for a sprint to the finish. The two briefly saw each other at the lodge in Platoro right before the New Mexico border, with Bartholmoes arriving just as Leveika was leaving at 10 p.m. The gap again closed to within five miles between the two men just north of Cuba when tire issues ultimately took Bartholmoes out of the hunt for the win.

With nearly every type of weather imaginable, from snowstorms in Montana to searing heat in New Mexico, Leveika showed remarkable durability in all types of weather and over all types of terrain. Congratulations on an amazing ride and a new record, Justinas!

FLORENCE, Italy (Velo) — Sepp Kuss will not race the Tour de France , team officials confirmed Tuesday.

Visma-Lease a Bike officials said the 2023 Vuelta a España winner is not in condition to take the Saturday start, and will be replaced by Bart Lemmen.

“Sepp Kuss has not recovered sufficiently from COVID, and will not start,” a brief press note stated.

There was no immediate reaction from Kuss.

Kuss told Velo he started the Critérium du Dauphiné with an illness but did not indicate it was COVID, and he later pulled out of the important pre-Tour stage race in the French Alps.

Kuss, 29, was listed on Visma-Lease a Bike’s Tour roster revealed just days ago that included two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert, both returning from injury.

His exit will be a huge blow for Visma-Lease a Bike, a team that won all three grand tours in 2023 but one that’s been struggling with crashes and illnesses across this season.

The popular Colorado climber was potentially a “Plan B” for Visma-Lease a Bike if Vingegaard — who hasn’t raced since crashing out of Itzulia Basque Country in April —  struggled to keep pace with Tadej Pogačar and the other GC favorites.

Kuss — who finished all three grand tours last season — won a stage in the 2021 Tour and hit a career-best 12th overall in last year’s edition.

The “Killer Bees” could pivot to Matteo Jorgenson as a GC alternative if Vingegaard runs out of gas. The Idahoan was second overall to Primož Roglič at the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month, and has been on a lone bright spot for the team in 2024, with victories at Dwars door Vlaanderen and Paris-Nice.

Visma-Lease a Bike will limp into the Tour with Vingegaard, Van Aert, and Christophe Laporte all coming off injuries and setbacks in what’s been less-than-ideal preparations for their respective Tour ambitions.

The late-hour DNS is also a personal blow for Kuss, who’s started the past four Tours in a row.

Kuss is scheduled to defend his Vuelta crown later this season, and there was no immediate news about an alternative racing calendar.

Van Supported Tours

You want fun, good food, gear-free riding, and other like-minded people to share the road? Then consider one of our popular van-supported tours. Adventure Cycling’s van-supported tours offer all the thrills of a classic, self-contained tour: a group of around 13 riders, camping, and shared group cooking. But you’ll spend your riding days free of personal and group gear since we provide a van to do all the heavy lifting, and two experienced leaders will make your tour one to remember. The group may also use the support van to take side trips that would not be reachable otherwise. We offer van-supported epic, cross-country adventures and many one- to two-week tours. We include occasional motel overnights (one every 10 days) on longer trips.

*Meals typically start with dinner on day one and end with lunch on the last day, and include group meals. You may choose to supplement our traditional meal schedule with other meals on your own. **The overnight for the last day of the trip is typically not included.

Level of Support

Our van supported tours have two of our tour leaders with you, one driving the van and trailer and the other riding sweep. The van will carry your gear from overnight to overnight – you just need to bring with you on the bike what you need for the day, including any clothing you might want, bike repair tools, and lunch and snacks. You’ll shop for food and cook in small, rotating groups. You should come to the tour physically prepared to ride the entire route. Vehicle support will be prioritized for use in medical and mechanical emergencies.

Before You Go

Upon signing up for an organized tour, you will receive confirmation and preparatory materials, including a copy of Before You Go: A Handbook for Adventure Cycling’s Van-Supported Tours (PDF/3,675 KB), which contains a packing list and training tips. About 60 days prior to your trip, you will receive a Tour Information Packet with specific logistical details about your starting location, the designated bike shop, shipping your bike, making travel arrangements, and much more.

Meals and Group Cooking

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. Your group shares responsibilities for food purchase, preparation, and clean up on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Accommodations

Most of the overnights will be at private or public campgrounds with a range of amenities. Depending on the nature and location of the trip, these facilities could range from RV parks with hot tubs to wilderness locations without running water. Indoor facilities such as motels/hotels, hostels, and churches are used occasionally, but on our more remote trips, some primitive camping is possible. Overnight facilities vary. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated appropriately for the season and elevation of your tour, and a sleeping pad. We strive to find showers as much as possible, but there may be some nights that they are not available.

Being Prepared

Adventure Cycling tours are a great way to get out and explore new places and meet new friends. You should plan on coming to your tour prepared to ride, both physically and with the correct equipment. Check out our  Before You Go booklet   (PDF) for more information on training and packing. You shouldn’t come to your tour planning to ride into shape, as coming to the trip ready for anything will have you enjoying it from day one.

Weather on our trips is highly variable and can be unpredictable. Your Tour Information Packet will have some information about weather for your tour, but you should come prepared to ride in all riding conditions no matter where your tour is or what time of year it takes place.

Mechanical Support

Van supported tours require a degree of mechanical self-sufficiency. You should have the tools and skills necessary to change flats and perform minor mechanical adjustments. We will carry a group kit with general tools that will work for most bikes. You should bring any specialty tools and parts that you may need, especially on more remote tours where access to bike shops is limited. Our leaders have some basic mechanical skills, but are not trained mechanics.

Disclaimers

Participation on an Adventure Cycling Association tour is physically demanding, strenuous, and potentially hazardous. By registering and joining the tour, you assume the risk associated with your participation.

While we strive to find routes that are off the beaten path, many of our trips must use roads that can be heavily trafficked in order to get us to our overnight location, a grocery store for grocery shopping, or an attraction along the way. Your leader will cue you in to these sections during your daily map meetings. Traffic volume, shoulder width, and road conditions are not part of a tour’s difficulty rating system.

The number of participants on a tour may be adjusted in response to demand and facility availability. Adventure Cycling reserves the right to make route and accommodation modifications without notification and to make alterations and substitutions to the itinerary as needed to improve the quality of the tour or to accommodate the comfort and well-being of our guests.
