Dominica Travel FAQ

The most famous waterfalls in Dominica are the Trafalgar Falls. (But there are so many amazing Dominica waterfalls that it’s hard to choose a favorite!) The waterfall on the left is called Papa Falls and is the taller of the two waterfalls, with a height of 125 feet.  The waterfall on the right is called Mama Falls and, while shorter at only 75 feet in height, has a stronger flow of water. See the stunning Trafalgar Falls on this Dominica highlights tour !

Dominica is best known for its lush rainforest and mountainous terrain. Dominica has gorgeous waterfalls, pristine waters perfect for snorkeling, and excellent whale-watching.

It is said that Dominica has 365 waterfalls, rivers, and hot springs – that’s one for every day of the year!

The tallest waterfalls in Dominica are Middleham Falls . Visit the beautiful Middleham Falls on this half-day tour .

The best time to go whale watching in Dominica is in the months of November through March , when sperm whale sightings are most frequent. See sperm whales (and dolphins) on this whale watching tour .

Dominica gets nearly 200 inches of rain a year in the inland mountains.   Don’t be surprised to get rained on in Dominica, particularly if you are up in the mountains. It is a rainforest, after all, and that’s why there are so many waterfalls to enjoy. Be prepared for the weather to change a lot over the course of the day.  Bring a hat and carry along a lightweight poncho to be prepared.

Tipping is your tour guide is not required but is always appreciated.  (And don’t forget about your driver!) Especially if your destination is a seasonal one for tourists, your tour guides are making the bulk of their income in a few short months. Your tour guides work hard to make sure you have an amazing experience, while keeping you safe.

You can see that there are many amazing tours in Dominica to choose from. Have a great time exploring the nature island of the Caribbean!

Chris

Written by Chris in Dominica Travel Guide

dominica carnival shore excursions

Are you looking for a Caribbean island that offers something other than white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water? Look no further than Dominica! Known as the “Nature Island,” this volcanic island is home to lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. And if you’re arriving by cruise ship, you’re in luck! Dominica is a popular port of call for many Caribbean cruises, and there’s plenty to see and do during your short visit.

First things first, let’s talk logistics. Many cruise ships dock at Roseau, the capital of Dominica. From there, you’ll have a variety of shore excursions to choose from, including island tours, hiking, and water sports. It’s a good idea to book your excursions in advance, as popular activities can fill up quickly. And don’t forget to bring your passport, as you’ll need it to leave the ship and explore the island.

Now, on to the fun stuff! If you’re a nature lover, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to explore Dominica’s lush rainforests and unique ecosystems. Take a guided hike through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you’ll see bubbling volcanic hot springs, towering waterfalls, and an incredible variety of plant and animal life. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at river tubing or canyoning. Trust us, there’s nothing quite like floating down a tropical river while surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of the rainforest.

For those who prefer to stay on the water, Dominica offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. The island is home to an incredible variety of marine life, including colorful coral reefs, exotic fish, and even the occasional dolphin or whale. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a rare sperm whale or humpback whale , which are known to frequent the waters around Dominica.

And if you’re looking for a little culture and history, be sure to visit the historic town of Portsmouth. This charming village is home to a variety of colonial-era buildings, as well as a bustling local market where you can pick up souvenirs and sample local cuisine.

So, as you can see, there’s plenty to see and do in Dominica, even if you’re only visiting for a day. And with its stunning natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and rich culture, it’s the perfect destination for nature and adventure lovers. So, if you’re looking for an island that offers something a little different from the typical Caribbean vacation, be sure to add Dominica to your next cruise itinerary. And who knows, you might just fall in love with this “Nature Island” and plan to come back for a longer visit.

Overall, Dominica offers a unique blend of nature, culture, and adventure that cannot be found in other Caribbean islands. So, plan your shore excursions in advance, bring your passport, and get ready for a day full of fun, nature, and adventure in Dominica.

Journey to a natural wonder and a filming location featured in Pirates of the Caribbean 2. From the parking lot, a 5-10 minute walk leads us to Titou Gorge. To experience the gorge fully, you'll take a brief swim (approximately 2 minutes) through a cave-like area (without swimming underwater). The swim covers approximately 100 feet, with the water reaching a depth of about 10 feet at its deepest point. However, once you reach the middle of the cave-like area, the water level is only about waist-high. There is a small waterfall that visitors can swim to, provided that the water flow is not too strong. During the excursion, you'll also have the option to climb a 5-foot waterfall to reach another waterfall. We provide swim belts to all of our guests for added safety during the swim.

Next we proceed to the Trafalgar Falls, where you'll be treated to the sight of the twin falls: the Father Falls, standing at 125 feet, and the Mother Falls, at 75 feet in height. Walking up to the Falls vantage point is a short ten-minute stroll through the rain forest canopy. The two magnificent falls are located here. Afterward, we will descend to a lower area where you can swim in the falls' refreshing cold water or the warm volcanic mineral water.

You'll then visit the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Established in 1889 to assist farmers in growing seedlings, the Botanical Gardens showcase a diverse range of native flowers, plants, and trees. A cricket match or another cultural event might be in progress if you're lucky. The last stop is a panoramic view of the city will be done at Morne Bruce.

This sun-drenched Roseau trip comes with transportation, beer, and water. These sites are a must-see while in Dominica. Reserve your spot today for an incredible experience.
