Yellowbird is Awesome!

We booked this tour as an excursion for our cruise ship stop in St. Lucia. Booking online was easy and there is no deposit--you pay in cash at the end of the tour. Cosol and his team met us at the pier, and there were also other non-cruisers who met us to join the tour as well. There was a rather large group--probably 40 or so people, so we were all split up into smaller groups and loaded into mini-vans. Do note that if you want to spend the day with certain people, ensure you are on the same mini-van because you won't really see the other people throughout the day. Each van had a driver who was also the tour guide for the day. Our driver was Yellowbird, who happens to be Cosol's brother, and he was awesome. We stopped so many places throughout the day, and it truly was a full-day experience. At each stop you have the option to get out of the van to take pictures, or stay in the van if you'd like. So no worries...you will stop and if you want to get out, you do, if you don't, you don't. We visited a banana plantation and tasted bananas and learned about their cultivation and growth. Then we drove through the fishing town of Anse La Raye and stopped at the top of a hill overlooking the town. This is where we were first introduced to the "mobile van"--a blue van that follows the caravan throughout the day. They were loaded with sodas, beers, water and, of course, rum punch. They had some of the best rum punch I've ever had! The entire caravan of vans stops here at the same time, so Cosol asked us where we (my husband and I) were from and we told him New York...he then made a joke that when we get to the volcano, the smell will remind us of the smell of New York. Hilarious! We then stopped at a guest house where a lovely woman named Claudia laid out of spread of snacks from the island. There were about 4 or 5 tables of food, and each dish has a label so you know exactly what you're eating. Yum, yum, yum! If you use the bathroom here, it costs $1 US, but elsewhere, it is free. We then drove to Soufriere where we boarded a water taxi to Jalousie Beach. It's probably a 5-minute boat ride and you're unloaded right on the beach. Fish are immediately visible as you exit the water taxi. Snorkel gear is available for rent for $11 US. There are lounge chairs, a shower and restrooms for free. You stay at the beach for about 2 hours and it's right in the valley of the Pitons. The beach is a little rocky, and water a little "dark", so don't expect the typical beach scene; however the beach is beautiful in its own right. You're then taken to the Soufriere volcano and the smell of sulphur hits you right away. There are guides who explain information about the volcano. Along this route you have beautiful views of the Pitons and yes, you will stop to take photos. Then you stop at a botanical garden which does have some lovely plants and birds. On the way back, you will stop for the most amazingly warm, fresh bread and your guide will show you how to put cheese strips in it. The warm cheesy bread is a snack I will not soon forget. Absolutely delicious! One thing I do want to note is that someone in our van wanted the recipe to one of the sauces we tasted earlier in the day and Yellowbird called Claudia (the woman who cooked the food) and she met the van and provided a little container of the sauce...because the recipe is a secret. How awesome of Yellowbird and Claudia to do that! There were a few more stops, and then we were taken back to the cruise port where we paid (cash only). Along the way there were opportunities to buy local goods, talk to people from the island, and Yellowbird taught us many patois words and lots of current events happening or the island, or that had recently happened. I may be leaving out a few stops, but like I said, this was an all-day trip with so much to take in! Basically, you cannot go wrong with Cosol Tours. All of the drivers/guides are very knowledgeable, funny and hard-working guys. This tour is worth every penny!

This tour was recommended by a friend and it was the highlight of our cruise. We got to taste, see, and feel the entire island of St Lucia. The entire staff was over the top with service and information, our driver was Fatman and he was the best! We stop and took pictures anytime and would get a lot of history alone the way. The food and drinks were all included no need to eat before you show up you will get a real taste of the island food. Great for a family with kids lots to do and see. Look no further this tour is for you. BTW the bread was amazing we even bought 5 loaves and took them on the ship for lunch the next day. Signed Extremely satisfied

My wife researched our Caribbean tours and compared with the Carnival on-board tours. I've got to confess that I am a tourism freak who takes his family on Griswald-like tours to see everything about each place we visit. COSOL did that and more, making a packed tour of his island seem laid-back while cramming in more fun activities than any two of the Carnival packages, for less than any one of Carnival's tours! COSOL (his nickname derived from a fruit with pudding-like meat) met us at pier side and we were off, first to a banana plantation (he told us to save a banana for later). All along the way, he stopped at scenic points for photos and tell us interesting facts about the island. Next he stopped at a house to have us sample some island fruits, snacks, and finger foods - delicious! Then off to the drive-in volcano, view the Pitons, and snorkeling a reef - each one an awesome tour destination of their own! Here's where the banana comes in - COSOL is right: fish LOVE bananas! Snorkeling the reef, we were SWARMED by schools of "banana Pirhannas": it took a GREAT dive OVER THE TOP! Then a tasty snack of hot, fresh bread and cheese on the way back, and all the time, COSOL made sure we were hydrated during the tour! If you can only do one tour in the Caribbean, definitely put COSOL at the top of your list! He and his high-energy, personable tour staff will feed you well on his tours, yet leave you hungry for more of ST. Lucia!!!

Cosol Tours and our guide Yellowbird were fabulous. We really enjoyed the tour of St. Lucia and getting to experience the local food, local sites, and overall feel of the island. Our group consisted of 2 seniors, 5 adults, 4 teenagers, and a toddler. Yellowbird made it interesting for all ages. We started the morning driving from Castries to Soffriere. Along the way, we learned about banana plants (even got to sample), the volcano, swam between the Piton Mountains, and finished with hot local bread and cheese. Cosol always had plenty to drink as the day was quite warm. I would recommend Cosol tours; especially, Yellowbird. He made our island visit extraordinary.

If you booked any excursions with your cruise line, CANCEL them now and email "Cosol" instead. This tour was recommended by someone at my wife's job and I am so glad we went on this tour June 2011. We had the pleasure of having "Cosol" himself as our tour guide and let me tell you this guy lives and breathes St Lucia. Super knowledgeable and everyone knows him very well in the Island. This tour is not rushed in any way and Cosol let me sit right next to him after he saw I had a really nice Nikon Camera so I left my wife in the back seat so I can see and take better pictures in the front...lol. He lets you step out of the van and take pictures for 10-15 minutes before moving on to the next beautiful sight of St Lucia. In addition there is a Blue Bus filled with Local Beer, Sodas, Water, and Plenty of Rum Punch for everyone to drink as much as they want. This bus followed us on the entire tour and they were giving our drinks without any greed at all. We weren't finished with one beer and they were already offering another beer and RUM PUNCH. There was a stop where they had a bunch of banana trees and we all got off the truck to taste the freshest Bananas you will ever taste with no added chemicals or junk like they put in the US. We then drove to a place where we had lunch at this "Red House". There we met a nice young lady that had an entire buffet for us cooked fresh to try samples of all of their native food which I could not believe. From chicken to breads to fish they had it all. Do not forget to try the "Banana Ketchup". That sauce is so goooooood!! From there we saw a live Volcano which was steaming from the ground and you can actually see the water boiling. Then some more picture taking moments. About half way during the tour they then took us to a dock where we they grouped into water taxis (Small Boats) to take us to the Piton Mountains which they let us stay in a hotel beach front enjoying their chairs, sand and water in between these two massive mountain. Take water socks as the entrance of the beach is a bit rocky with shells. After an hour the water taxi picked us up and took us back to the dock where we met Cosol and of-course "The Blue Bus" with more drinks. At this point of the tour me and my wife were feeling good after a couple of drinks and then Cosol had a dark bottle in his hand that looked like a bottle of "MamaJuana". In St Lucia it is called "Local Viagra". He offered everyone to have a drink and I think another guy and myself were the only ones that were crazy enough to try it. Lets just say it burned my chest and all of my internal organs!!! On the drive back we had some more sightseeing but he surprised when he stopped at a local bakery to give us these huge pieces of bread that looked like turkey legs. Those breads were hot and fresh and he came back with a cheese that you insert into the center. I spoke to several people on our cruise where they paid almost twice as much for a 3 hour tour and had to take pictures from the inside of the bus. Cosol price is only $65 per person but I felt that tour was worth much more so me and my wife gave him $80 each. To Cosol: Thank you for being so kind and generous during our tour. We learned so much about your island and we will tell everyone how good your tour was back here at home so the say they visit St Lucia you can show them around. If you read these reviews I am the bald guy that sat next to you with the Big Camera 1 week ago and I gave you my business card so I can make you some postcards to give out in St Lucia. Jorge and Jessica from Miami Florida

My husband and I were visiting St Lucia for the first time in June. After reading all the wonderful reviews about this tour, I decied to book it for our tour of St. Lucia . It was wonderful, the taste of local foods, the blue beverage van that was alway close by to provide refreshments which included the best rum punch I have every tasted, the wonderful creole bread with cheese not to mention we spent a day viewing all of the major sites of St Lucia including the active volcano, boat ride to the beach between the piton and breath taking photo points. It was the best tour I have ever experinece and the cost was half the price of other tours. Yellow Bird was the best and a great driver. Thank you for making our St Lucia visit a wonderful expierence. We also used Cosol for transporting us from the airport to our hotel and back to airport at the end of our stay. The Drivers very courteous and punctual.

Highlights of JAMAICA: Endemic Birding

  • 28 endemics plus a few endemic subspecies
  • Many Caribbean specialties
  • Overwintering neotropical warblers
  • Butterflies & reptiles

Description of JAMAICA: Endemic Birding

It should be no surprise that Jamaican birding is easy and fun! The endemic hummingbird, Red-billed Streamertail, is Jamaica’s the national bird, so it has to be a fun place to visit! Add in 27 more endemic species, and many additional Caribbean specialties, and Jamaica becomes a destination no birder should miss! Jamaica is the 3 rd largest of all the Caribbean Islands, even at just 146 miles from north to south, and 51 miles at its widest.

On this trip we are concentrating on the eastern side of the island where varied habitats throughout the lush, mountainous region offer many opportunities to see all the endemic bird species at a leisurely birding pace. We intend to bird locally but also travel a short distance to other regions (no more than 2 hours drive away) to catch up with specific species that are more localized.

“I enjoyed my time birding with Richard Cimino of Yellow-billed Tours immensely.  Richard is the type of guy who bends over backward, trying to help you get on a bird – especially the difficult Grasshopper Sparrow!  His patience is second to none.  This is my second time birding with Richard in California, and I want to return for some more.  I highly recommend him to anyone planning a trip to California or beyond.

Tom – Connecticut June 2023

My wife and I very much enjoyed our recent birding outing with Rich to Marin County’s bay wetlands. Rich was sure to provide beautiful weather and a welcome respite from the recent spate of rainy days. He knew his birds and how to get good looks at them. Among several highlights were wide open closeups of a Sora Rail and a Ridgeway’s Rail, the latter flushed by Rich’s simple, loud hand clap, and a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron who obligingly provided closeup viewing. Rich was sure to ask about our particular interests, and we enjoyed a good conversation throughout the morning. He followed up our trip with a list of the birds we saw and a few good pics. We very much recommend a bird outing with him.

Rob & Maureen of Sacramento, Ca. March 21, 2023

Dear Rich, It was great to see you and the birding Saturday group. Thank you. But the part I attended was wonderful and action-packed! Seeing the Barn Owls was great. The Red-tailed Hawk was beautiful too. I’ll need to add the sighting to the breeding bird atlas for next year.

Dede Bag- Hi Rich, it was a great day, and I enjoyed seeing you and that rich habitat again. It was great to see the restored areas too. It’s hard, never-ending work! We had a beautiful day for our adventure!

Thanks, Rich!  This was one of the best birding days I’ve had in awhile – and so close to home too.  Hope there will be more field trips like this one. Barbara Nathan

A customized birding tour

I’ve had the pleasure of a few birding trips with Rich Cimino and Yellowbird Tours. They were from his regularly scheduled YBT tours but this past year many of those were canceled because of Covid-19. But now that many of us are vaccinated, including Rich, there are more YBT trips opening up. But if you are like me, and not really ready to fly somewhere, there are still options. I asked Rich if he would design a 4-5 day trip for a part of California that I haven’t birded for many years, namely the NE part of the state. He came up with a great trip that covered fields, forests, lakes and mountains and we saw many birds that were new to me. His knowledge of local history was an added bonus to his knowledge of the local birds. Consider a customized birding tour as an option if you are not ready for flying, or if you have a particular place you would like to bird that is not on the YBT schedule.

Kent McDonald,

San Francisco

May 17, Dear Rich,

Thanks for this email and thanks for a great morning.  I now am more familiar with birding places close to my daughter’s home in San Francisco and Marin County, one of the main objectives I had.  I also really liked the Marin County wetlands and all the birds we were able to see clearly there. Your driving, knowing where to go gave me more time in the field rather than traffic. I think you were a great leader of this trip and look forward to more, possibly in the mountains.

Birding California

Mountains, wetlands and the pacific ocean - california dreaming....

California conjures up visions of sun-baked landscapes, scenic mountain vistas, the blue Pacific, and expansive wetlands. The birds are no less spectacular, with everything from Black-footed Albatross to Lawrence's Goldfinch. During this two-week tour we will search for many of the birds that California has to offer.

Habitats that we visit include marshlands and tidal wetlands around Monterey Bay and Bodega Bay, the scenic Sierras rich with montane birds including seven species of woodpeckers, and the sage-filled lands east of the Sierras that harbor Greater Sage-Grouse and Mountain Bluebird. We will bird mixed oak woodlands that contain several species of owls and passerines not easily found in other habitats.

TWO Shearwater Journeys pelagic trips are included on select tours for species such as Long-tailed Jaeger, South Polar Skua, Buller's Shearwater, and Ashy StormPetrel. On these trips and the Santa Cruz Island boat ride, there is an excellent chance for whales, including Humpback and the magnificent Blue Whale!

Yellow Rail Field Guides Birding Tours LOUISIANA USA

Louisiana: Yellow Rails & Crawfish Tails

Cajun country is one of the primary rice-growing regions of the US, and as such it provides many prairie and taiga pothole breeding birds their winter home: ducks, geese, bitterns, Sedge Wrens, LeConte's Sparrows, and secretive Yellow Rails. These species are found across much of the Southeast, but because of the rice-harvesting schedule of Cajun farmers, the chance of seeing them here is perhaps better than anywhere else--as the rice combines collect the lagniappe (extra) autumn crop, they flush the birds that are otherwise buried deep in marshy grass. In addition to the marsh birds, any hedgerow may have lingering or vagrant migrants, wintering sparrows, or some other surprise!

In the course of our long weekend, we'll also bird the coastal marshes, beaches, and cheniers (tree islands) for late seasonal migrants and wintering species, and we'll visit the nearby pine woods that are home to such southeastern specialties as Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch, and Bachman's Sparrow. And don't forget your appetite: Louisiana is rightly known for its tasty cuisine! So why don't y'all come on down and visit?

Client comment "It's a wonderful tour. Although it's short, we saw a large number of species and a large number of individual birds. I was amazed we saw all the rails so well. Dan Lane does everything well as a tour leader. He gets us on the birds, has thoughtful and interesting comments about what we are seeing, is patient and good with people, and makes the shared experience a lot of fun. I usually travel with Field Guides. FG trips have been a good fit for how I like to travel and bird--for many years now." A.B. LOUISIANA: YELLOW RAILS & CRAWFISH TAILS 2019

  • Dates & Prices

This short Moscow tour will give you a true taste of the history, culture and incomparable urban vibe that define one of the world’s largest metropolises. In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

If you only have a few days to spend in Moscow, this tour will ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Let the experts navigate you through this complex and occasionally overwhelming capital, giving you plenty of time to soak up the city’s most unmissable attractions.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
