Benefits of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

This co-branded WestJet Mastercard has many of the perks and features you’d expect from a travel card, like travel vouchers, free checked bags, free global Wi-Fi and travel insurance.

Drawbacks of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard has a lot going for it. However, its high annual household income requirements could be a barrier to entry, and its rewards are limited to WestJet flights, as well as WestJet Vacation and Sunwing Vacation packages.

Who should get the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard?

Jet-setters who frequently fly with WestJet stand to gain the most from the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. The card offers its highest earn rate on dollars spent booking WestJet flights and vacation packages. WestJet dollars can be redeemed for WestJet flights, and WestJet Vacation and Sunwing Vacation packages.

Is the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard worth it?

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard may be worthwhile for those who like to fly with WestJet, as the card’s reward redemptions are limited to travel booked through WestJet.  One WestJet dollar is worth $1 CAD, according to WestJet. So, you’d need to earn at least 119 WestJet dollars to recoup the card’s $119 annual fee.

What Reddit has to say

NerdWallet’s credit card experts rigorously review every detail of a card to determine its rating. But our Nerds know it can also be helpful to hear what everyday cardholders think. So, we took to Reddit to find out what users are saying about the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard across multiple threads.

For those looking for a general travel card, one Redditor recommends the Scotiabank Gold Amex , and NerdWallet seconds that pick.

  • Below average customer satisfaction: The Royal Bank of Canada ranks 8th out of 13 institutions in online banking satisfaction according to J.D. Power’s 2023 Canada Credit Card Satisfaction Study.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

If you fly with WestJet, the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is the best credit card in Canada to earn extra benefits with the Calgary-based airline.

With this card, ‌you’ll earn WestJet Dollars on everyday spending,† which can be redeemed for flights. You’ll also enjoy a suite of ongoing perks that can save you money or even help you reach elite status.

These days, the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is particularly intriguing due to the record-high welcome bonus on offer until next year.†

In this post, we’ll look at nine ways the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard will enhance your travel with WestJet.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

  • Earn 300 WestJet dollars upon making your first purchase†
  • Earn 300 WestJet dollars upon spending $5,000 in the first three months†
  • Plus earn 100 WestJet dollars as a one-time anniversary bonus†
  • Plus, receive an annual companion voucher for discounted travel on WestJet flights, with a co-pay starting at $119 plus taxes and fees†
  • Minimum income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household
  • Annual fee: $119

1. Welcome Bonus of Up to 700 WestJet Dollars

By applying for the card prior to March 14, 2024, you’re eligible to receive a welcome bonus of up to 700 WestJet Dollars.†

To begin, you’ll automatically receive 300 WestJet Dollars after your first purchase.†

A further 300 WestJet Dollars can be earned after spending $5,000 (all figures in CAD) in the first three months of card membership,† and the final allotment of 100 WestJet Dollars is given as a one-time anniversary bonus.†

This trend of spreading the welcome bonus over into the second year is nothing new. In fact, banks have been taking this approach more and more to entice cardholders to hang onto credit cards for the long-term.

The current record-high welcome bonus of up to 700 WestJet Dollars is a huge increase over the past four years, during which the bonus was capped at around 450 WestJet Dollars.

If you fly with WestJet with any frequency and want to reduce your out-of-pocket costs by leveraging the welcome bonus, you’ll certainly want to apply for the card before March 14, 2024, which is when the offer is set to expire.†

2. Reasonable Annual Fee

While the welcome bonus on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard has doubled in size over the years, the annual fee has held steady at $119.†

This certainly hasn’t been the case across the Canadian credit card landscape. Over those same years, we’ve seen other World Elite Mastercard products increase their annual fees to upwards of $150.

In the first year of card membership alone, the opportunity to earn up to 600 WestJet Dollars† more than makes up for the annual fee. And in the second year, the anniversary bonus of 100 WestJet Dollars† nearly covers it, too.

In subsequent years, deciding whether the $119 annual fee is worth it will be a matter of weighing the cost against the many WestJet benefits that come with the card.

On the other hand, if you do fly with WestJet, you should easily be able to get your money back through the ongoing cardholder perks and the WestJet Dollars you’ll earn.

3. Annual Round-Trip Companion Voucher

One of the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard ’s most attractive features is the annual companion voucher .†

If you fly WestJet with a partner or a friend, the companion voucher can result in good savings, especially for premium fares.

When you book a full-price fare, you can then use your companion voucher to access a discounted fare for your companion’s ticket.

The price of the discounted fare will depend on your destination, and is structured as follows:

  • $119, plus taxes, fees, and surcharges, for travel within Canada or the continental US†
  • $399, plus taxes, fees, and surcharges, for travel anywhere else that WestJet flies†

Although you’ll still have to pay ‌ taxes, fees, and air transportation charges on the second fare, the companion voucher stands to save you hundreds of dollars if used strategically.

The WestJet annual companion voucher is most valuable when used for last-minute flights, flights during peak season, premium flights, and long-haul routes.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

It’s worth noting that even if you don’t have a travel companion, you can still make good use of the companion voucher.

That’s because WestJet has given select cardholders the opportunity to convert companion vouchers into WestJet Dollars ,† and what’s more, all WestJet members can exchange companion vouchers for WestJet lounge passes .†

Therefore, even if you’re flying solo, you should still be able to make use of your companion voucher, especially if you travel through Calgary and have access to the flagship Elevation Lounge .

4. Earn WestJet Dollars on Everyday Spending

With the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard , not only will you earn WestJet Dollars with the welcome bonus, but you’ll also earn them through your everyday spending.

The WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard earns 2% back in WestJet Dollars per dollar spent on eligible WestJet purchases,† and 1.5% back in WestJet Dollars per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases.†

If you have WestJet status, you can stack the WestJet Dollars earned through your credit card with those earned with your status on WestJet flights and WestJet Vacations packages, and the earning rates become very meaningful.

When paired with the 2% earning rate on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard, Silver elite members can earn up to 5% back,† Gold members get up to 7% back,† and Platinum members can earn up to 10% back† in WestJet Dollars for eligible WestJet flight bookings.

Therefore, if you have any tier of WestJet status, you’ll be able to pad your balance even faster by booking your flights on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard.

Even if you don’t have status, you can earn 1.5% back in WestJet Dollars everywhere you shop,† including at Costco, which only accepts Mastercard.

5. Redeem WestJet Dollars for WestJet Flights

WestJet Rewards is one of the easiest airline loyalty programs to understand and use for flight redemptions.

Indeed, you won’t have to worry about finding award availability, since all of WestJet’s seats are bookable with WestJet Dollars.

WestJet Dollars ‌can be used as a credit against the base fare of any WestJet booking.† One WestJet Dollar will get you a $1 credit against the base fare;† however, you’ll still be on the hook for the taxes, fees, and other air transportation charges .

WestJet Dollars are going to be most useful if you live in a city to which WestJet frequently flies. Fortunately, WestJet has been busy expanding its network as of late.

The airline is restoring and adding new routes to popular European and US destinations , and WestJet also now offers flights to Iceland and Tokyo, as well as routes all over Canada, the US, and to sunny destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico.

Redeeming WestJet Dollars for flights is easy, and you can even redeem WestJet Dollars for WestJet Vacations , allowing you to book Disney tickets, airport transfers, and more with your WestJet Dollars.

6. Free Checked Bags on WestJet Flights

By holding a WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard , you’ll enjoy a free checked bag for yourself and up to eight other passengers on the same booking when flying with WestJet.†

This benefit applies automatically to all WestJet flights, even if you don’t use your card to book the ticket.†

Since checked baggage normally costs at least $30–35 on WestJet flights, by using this benefit, you could easily save over $60 per trip, or much more if you’re travelling as a family.

If you fly more than once per year with WestJet, then the savings from this benefit alone can easily justify the cost of the annual fee.

7. Status Lift

If you’re loyal to WestJet, the Status Lift feature on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard can help accelerate your way to elite status.†

As a reminder, WestJet has three elite status tiers: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each tier comes with its own set of benefits, improving and expanding with each tier you reach.

To reach each tier, you’ll have to earn “Tier Qualifying Spend,”which equals $3,000 for Silver status, $5,000 for Gold status, and $8,000 for Platinum status.

You’ll earn qualifying spend at a rate of 100% of your base fare on eligible WestJet flights, or 20% of your base package price on completed eligible WestJet Vacations.

The WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard comes with the Status Lift benefit, which helps you accelerate your Tier Qualifying Spend.

By spending on the card, you’ll earn $500 in tier qualifying spend for every $15,000 you charge to the card.†

With this benefit, you can earn up to three $500 lifts per calendar year, or a total of up to $1,500 towards status.†

This effectively reduces the Tier Qualifying Spend thresholds by $500, $1,000, or $1,500, depending on how much you charge to the card.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a way to streamline your journey towards status with WestJet, be sure to leverage the Status Lift feature on the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard in your favour.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

8. Free Boingo Wi-Fi

Another benefit that comes with the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is 12 free 90-minute Boingo Wi-Fi sessions on flights each year, as well as unlimited access to Boingo hotspots worldwide.†

Boingo is the Wi-Fi provider on select WestJet flights with onboard internet. A Boingo Unlimited membership would otherwise cost $14.99 per month, and the alternative of paying for Wi-Fi onboard can cost over $20 per flight.†

If you’d usually be paying out of pocket for onboard Wi-Fi, the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is a great choice to help lower some of your travelling costs.

In order to access this feature, all you need to do is register your card and set up a Boingo account before you fly.

After that, simply connect to the onboard Wi-Fi, and enjoy.

9. Strong Travel Insurance

One more reason to apply for the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is that it comes with strong travel insurance.

With the insurance coverage on the card, you’ll enjoy the following inclusions:

  • Emergency medical insurance for the first 15 consecutive days of any out-of-province trip for travellers under the age of 65, or for the first three consecutive days of the trip for those 65 years and up†
  • Trip interruption insurance of up to $5,000 per covered person†
  • Auto rental damage and theft insurance, which can help you save on the insurance fees that rental companies like to impose for vehicles, up to an MSRP of $65,000†
  • Hotel burglary insurance of up to $2,500†
  • Travel accident insurance of up to $500,000 against accidental death or dismemberment†
  • Extended warranty protection that doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty for up to one year†
  • Purchase protection coverage against accidental loss or damage of personal property for up to 90 days from the date of purchase†

And if you use your card to pay for the taxes and fees on a WestJet Rewards booking, the insurance will also apply.†

Most credit cards don’t cover award bookings, so if you want to be covered when you redeem WestJet Dollars, your best bet is to use a card that will provide insurance coverage for award bookings , including the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard.†

The WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard is the best card in Canada for enjoying benefits with WestJet.†

The card’s welcome bonus is currently the highest it’s ever been. What’s more, you’ll enjoy a suite of ongoing perks as a cardholder, such as the annual companion voucher , free checked bags on WestJet flights, and onboard Wi-Fi access with Boingo.†

With the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard, you can also redeem the WestJet Dollars you earn for discounted WestJet flights.†

If you travel with WestJet at any frequency, adding the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to your wallet is a surefire way to score extra perks at a reasonable price.

Before I went deep into the world of miles and points, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard was the main card in my wallet. Even as someone who was dipping their toes into the game, I was able to extract significant value from this card, mostly thanks to the generous annual companion fare voucher that I used to travel across North America with friends on the cheap.

Needless to say, this card holds a place in my heart since it has many perks and benefits that can result in significant savings for an individual or family who wants to simply and straightforwardly save money on their travels.

Let’s dive into our review of the WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard currently has a welcome offer in which cardholders can earn up to 700 WestJet dollars :

  • Earn 300 WestJet dollars upon first purchase 1
  • Earn 300 WestJet dollars upon spending $5,000 in the first 3 months 1
  • Earn 100 WestJet dollars as a one-time anniversary bonus 1

The WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard earns WestJet dollars and offers cardholders benefits on WestJet flights including an annual companion fare and a first free checked bag.

Check out our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard review for more details.

This offer has an expiry date of Oct 30, 2024 .

If you are curious as to how you can spend $5,000 in three months for the second part of the bonus, learn more about how you can easily meet minimum spending requirements .

Earning Rates

Outside of the welcome bonus on this credit card, the most consistent way to earn WestJet dollars is through organic spending on a WestJet credit card. The earning rate on the card is rather simplistic, offering an elevated earning rate for WestJet purchases and then a catch-all category for all other purchases.

This card earns WestJet dollars at the following rate:

  • 2% back in WestJet dollars for all purchases of WestJet flights or WestJet vacation packages (2 WJD per $100 spent on WestJet flights or vacation packages)
  • 1.5% back in WestJet dollars for all other everyday purchases (1.5 WJD per $100 spent on all other purchases)

Earning up to 2% on all purchases is okay for a credit card in Canada, but definitely not top-tier when it comes to overall rewards. If you want to further maximize your purchases, such as using the best rewards credit card for grocery purchases , there are better credit cards in the market for that.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard has an annual fee of $119 , which is similar to other comparable travel credit cards in Canada.

Customers who have a RBC Signature No Limit Banking account can receive a $35 rebate towards the annual fee on this card, whereas customers who have a RBC VIP Banking account can receive a $120 rebate towards the annual fee.

The  RBC VIP Banking account  offers  unlimited debit, Interac e-Transfer, and worldwide ATM withdrawal transactions. Account holders are entitled to a  $120 annual fee rebate on an eligible RBC credit card, a safety deposit box discount, and more.

Redeeming WestJet Dollars

WestJet dollars can be redeemed towards flights and WestJet Vacations packages . Westjet flies throughout North America in addition to a handful of international destinations so it isn’t difficult to make a redemption, whether you are booking a complete itinerary or simply positioning yourself for your next redemption flight.

westjet aircraft in flight

There is no bad choice to redeem WestJet dollars since they use a simple points currency system. Simply put, 1 WestJet dollar will always be redeemable for 1 Canadian dollar towards the base fare. With this in mind, I find it is best to redeem WestJet dollars as I need them and not put too much thought into finding the best value for my points as I would do with other, more convoluted, points programs.

Check out our guide to the WestJet Rewards loyalty program to learn more about how to best redeem your WestJet dollars for flights and WestJet Vacations packages.

The WestJet RBC World Elite card comes with a wealth of travel benefits, including an annual WestJet companion voucher, free checked baggage on WestJet flights, free in-flight WiFi on WestJet, and comprehensive insurance coverage making it one of the best Mastercard credit cards in Canada .

WestJet Companion Voucher

Outside of the welcome bonus, the WestJet companion voucher is the most valuable part of this credit card. The WestJet companion voucher gives the cardholder the opportunity to book a companion on their itinerary while only paying the base fare plus taxes and fees. When using a companion voucher, the base fare is reduced to $119 for travel within North America and $399 outside of North America for economy travel. Premium cabins charge an additional $100 on top of the above numbers when using a companion fare for these redemptions.

westjet mastercard travel insurance benefits

This annual companion voucher is automatically deposited into the cardholder’s WestJet Rewards account upon card approval and then at the credit card account anniversary thereafter.

The companion voucher can be applied towards any fare class, except for business. If you often find yourself traveling with a companion, this can significantly reduce your overall travel costs and may allow you to splurge on WestJet premium economy for an added-value travel experience.

Free Checked Baggage

WestJet RBC World Elite cardholders can receive one piece of free checked baggage for themselves and up to eight others on the same reservation. This is applicable on all WestJet flights, provided that the individual who booked the itinerary is the primary cardholder and remains an active cardholder.

This is the best way to save money on checked baggage with WestJet since simply holding a credit card is a low-effort play to save money on any WestJet flights you take if you often find yourself or your travel companions checking baggage. The savings with free checked bags can really add up as a result of this benefit, especially if you find yourself traveling with a partner, friend, or family on the same reservation.

Insurance Coverage

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard offers eight types of insurance coverage :

  • Emergency medical insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Car rental collision and loss damage coverage
  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Flight delay coverage
  • Hotel and motel burglary insurance
  • Purchase security
  • Extended warranty coverage

Insurance coverages on credit cards can be nuanced in what is covered, so I recommend that you refer to the WestJet RBC World Elite insurance certificate for additional details, including terms and conditions for eligibility.

Who is the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard Best For?

If you are considering diversifying points programs, which is always a great idea, accruing WestJet dollars is a great option away from the typical programs in Canada such as Aeroplan or British Airways Avios . With that in mind, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is your ticket to accruing a significant amount of dollars in the WestJet Rewards program.

Personally, I’ve found value in having a stash of WestJet for the odd flight around North America, such as our recent trip to the Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas. Not to mention, WestJet does offer many direct flights to destinations that Air Canada does not offer direct flights to. For example, I’m heading to Victoria from Edmonton in May and I can fly direct with WestJet, whereas I would have to connect in Vancouver with Air Canada.

westjet flight network

On the other hand, my significant other has recently booked a big redemption for herself and her sisters to fly Edmonton-Calgary-Cancun for a girls’ trip on WestJet Business class on the Dreamliner. This would not have been possible without the WestJet dollars accrued from this credit card in conjunction with the RBC Avion Visa Infinite card .

Whether you are interested in flying economy, premium economy, or business class, the WestJet World Elite Mastercard can help you get closer to your next dream redemption.

Finally, the companion voucher can result in some deadly redemption combinations. My personal favorite is using it to cut the cost of a premium economy fare to $219 round trip for my travel partner and pay the whole base fare with WestJet dollars. On the other hand, if you were a family of four and both adults held a WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, each parent could book an itinerary for themselves + one child to cut the overall flight cost almost in half.

While RBC offers many credit cards that we love, the WestJet RBC World Elite offers unique WestJet benefits with a reasonable annual fee. Simply put, if you find yourself flying WestJet often, this is a good card to consider adding to and keeping in your wallet for the long term.

As a reminder, you are eligible to apply for a new RBC credit card every 90 days . If you have applied for a card more recently than that, consider if an RBC product switch to this card is right for you and your future travel plans.

Hi. I reactivated my RBC Westjet Master Card on September 29th 2023. I was suppose to receive a companion voucher for coming back. I checked in November and December 2023 a no voucher is found. I used the card over Christmas, I called RBC and was advised no voucher would show up on my account until 3-4 weeks after using my card. That puts the companion voucher into 2024. Will I only receive one voucher for 2024. Tried calling your 1-888-937-8538 to speak to Westjet Rewards but got no where. What do I get for coming back to the credit card ?

The web page here https://frugalflyer.ca/credit-card/rbc-westjet-world-elite/ says $200 WJD after a $5000 spend in the first 3 months, but elsewhere it’s mentioned as $300 WJD. What’s the ‘real’ answer? Thanks!

It is $300. Thank you for pointing out the error.

My Experience with RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard Insurance

To earn as many WestJet Dollars as possible, I use my WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to pay for nearly everything I buy. So when the 55" Samsung Frame TV I bought with this card needed its panel replaced after only 18 months of ownership (and just 6 months outside the protection of the manufacturer's warranty), I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had an extended warranty for up to two years with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. To use this feature, I paid for the repair myself, filed the claim online with the card's insurance carrier and I was reimbursed with a cheque for the full amount within weeks. Now I run every major purchase I can through this card—not only to earn the 1.50% back in WestJet dollars—but also to gain the protection of an extended warranty, without paying extra for one.

How does the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard credit card compare?

While there’s no doubt that the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a great credit card, you should consider the competition before you sign up. The most logical comparison would be the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card. Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada, so you can quickly compare the earn rate and benefits.

The TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card has a slightly higher annual fee of $139.00. 1.5 Aeroplan points† on eligible gas, grocery and direct through Air Canada® purchases (including Air Canada Vacations®)†) made with your card. Earn 1 point† for every $1 spent on all other Purchases made with your Card made with your card. Redeeming points is arguably easier with Air Canada since they have more flights and airline partners. However, Aeroplan also uses dynamic pricing, which means during peak seasons, the cost for a free flight could cost you more points.

With both cards, you get free checked bags † . While the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard gives you an annual round-trip companion voucher, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card has the advantage in the travel insurance department since it includes trip cancellation† and delayed/lost baggage insurance † .

While the earn rate and benefits are important, you could argue your travel preferences are more important. If you like to fly WestJet, get the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. If flexibility is more important, then the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card might be the better pick. But there are plenty of other travel rewards credit cards to consider too.

Is the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard worth it?

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard   is an excellent card for frequent WestJet flyers. The welcome bonus is impressive, and you only need to make a single purchase to get it. The earn rate and additional benefits, including free checked bags⁴, will also be useful.

There’s no denying the card’s benefits, but you’re still restricted to WestJet or Delta code-share flights with your redemptions. This may not be an issue for some people, but those who prefer flexibility may want to see what other travel cards are out there. And if you're looking for a similar card from RBC and WestJet with less features and a lower annual fee, consider the WestJet RBC Mastercard instead.
