of seeing some of the amazing history of italy. to see the history of rome and pompeii along with seeing the beauty of the amalfi coast was unbelievable. as a team we grew so much closer because of having to rely on each other to navigate a foreign transit system and ways of communicating. we will go abroad again when we can., dean brownley, we had a great experience with navigo. not only did itinerary including guided tours, games, team lunches/dinners, and some downtime to explore both florence and rome on our own schedule. a few highlights for me included a team cooking class, a guided bike tour through florence, the trip to the colosseum, and the food throughout the entire trip overall a wonderful, very memorable experience that i would highly recommend, matthew johnson, we had a wonderful trip to italy, it was everything i could have hoped for when planning it. navigo was professional and helpful from start to finish. they were always available when i had questions before we left on the trip, then once we arrived in italy their tour directors did everything possible to make it a fantastic experience. the clubs we trained at were nice and the tennis competition was the perfect level for our team. each day was a great mix of site seeing and free time to explore on our own. i also highly recommend the bike tour in naples. we certainly plan to use navigo for our future team trips., our team traveled to puerto rico for an amazing cultural and baseball experience. the navigo team led by john was incredible in their planning. they were able to connect us with local teams, set up educational opportunities and give us time to relax and explore the island. the tour directors were flexible, worked well with our players and really made the trip. from playing baseball, hiking el yunque, learning about local history, sharing meals with other teams and families and even getting some time at the beach there is not much else you can get out of a spring break The tour is led by Mike Hess, a California native who has lived in Spain for the past 24 years. Mike has been operating the tours since 2014, and he personally oversees every phase of the tour, including the selection of the hotel, restaurants, transportation and the tour professionals. Mike is a former marketing executive for Adidas and current business professor at a Madrid university. In 2012 he started the Spanish Pickleball Association and has spent the last decade establishing the sport in Spain. Now he enjoys sharing two of his greatest passions, pickleball and Spain, with travelers looking for a unique “sport-cultural” experience. Mike recently explained the history of his tours and what to expect on the upcoming trip to Spain:

“Since 2014 we’ve had several amazing pickleball tours in Madrid and Barcelona, and for September 2022 I’ve added a new tour to Southern Spain, in the region called Andalusia.” Mike added, “This is definitely not just a ‘pickleball boot camp’. It’s an immersion into Spain led by a local, and a chance to play pickleball with terrific instruction throughout the journey. People from all over the US and Canada have joined the tours and I’ve received tremendously positive feedback. Anyone interested should read the tour testimonials to get a true perspective of what a fun and unique experience we offer.”

Spain is Open for Travel

Mike told us that “Spain has completely reopened for travel in 2022. Hotels, restaurants, museums, sport stadiums are 100% open and there’s no mask required.” About the upcoming tour’s destination (the city of Málaga and surrounding areas), Mike explained, “Southern Spain is the country’s most popular tourist destination, so our travelers are in for an incredible experience. I’ve been arranging the details for the upcoming tour for the past two years.”

“Málaga, Spain, is a vibrant and historic coastal city that never sleeps,” Mike told us. This region of Spain is known for its warm weather, rich culture and history, gastronomy, music, art, festive atmosphere, and its friendly people. “From Málaga”, Mike continued, “we’ll take three separate day trips, always returning to sleep at our Marriott 4-star hotel in Málaga. The day trips will be guided tours of the following cities: Granada (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Córdoba (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Ronda, a spectacular village built on a cliff and dating back to the 6th century BC. And of course, we’ll play pickleball on all of the days we stay in Málaga!”

Two coaches will provide instruction on the tour – Jennifer Lucore and Mike. Jennifer is a National Championship gold medal winner and Pickleball Hall of Famer, and she’s already been on two of Mike’s previous tours: “Jennifer had such a great time and she’s thrilled to come back” Mike explained. “She’s not only a world-class player but an amazing coach as well. Our instruction is designed to help players of all skill levels improve their game while here. And we’ll also have time for competition and open play.” Mike himself is a PPR Certified Pickleball Instructor as well as a USAP Credentialed Referee.

That’s the experience you’ll have with Viva Spain Pickleball Tours, which launched in 2014. Since then pickleball players from throughout the US and Canada have packed their paddles and headed to Spain to enjoy a one-of-a-kind “pickleball tour” that combines the best of pickleball and Spain.

A Truly Unique Experience

The Viva Spain Pickleball Tours are designed to allow pickleball addicts to continue playing their favorite sport while traveling. In addition, the tours provide a unique opportunity to interact with the locals on and off the court in a way that does not happen with standard packaged tours. Content of the Tours

Itineraries for the 9-day pickleball tours provide a perfect balance of on- and off-court activities. In the morning participants get plenty of pickleball with 3 hours of court time that includes a variety of open play, drills, clinics, demonstrations and competition. The court activity is prepared by tour organizer Mike Hess and the accompanying “Tour Pro” he invites on each tour. (Past Tour Pros have included Chris Thomas, Timothy Nelson, Jennifer Lucore, Bob Youngren, Jeffrey Shank and Prem Carnot.) While most of the court time involves open play, the coaches are there to provide as much personalized feedback and training as players desire. And of course, playing with the locals and learning some Spanish along the way is part of the package! Although pickleball is a relatively new sport in Spain, the locals are enthusiastic about playing with travelers and are improving their skills at a rapid pace.

Fascinating Off-Court Activities

After getting their fill of pickleball each day, our tours allow travelers to immerse themselves in Spanish history, culture and festivities every afternoon and evening. After morning pickleball play, the schedule allows travelers to shower, have lunch, and relax until the organized tour activities begin in the afternoon. Whether you see the sights via our luxury bus or a guided walking tour, you will always be accompanied by a professional tour guide who will share expertise about the fascinating history of Spain and the centuries-old sites visited on the tours, such as the Royal Palace in Madrid or Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. We also take two days off from pickleball to enjoy full-day excursions where you will explore surrounding areas of our host city.

The average temperature during the tour dates is 80° with sunshine, so travelers not only enjoy playing outdoors. but sightseeing under blue skies as we visit the different sites to experience history first-hand.

All Skill Levels Welcome, as well as Non-Pickleball Players

The tour welcomes pickleball players of all skill levels. Pickleball activities ensure that players from beginner to advanced enjoy their time on the courts and learn new things to improve their level of play. Non-pickleball playing spouses, family and friends are also welcome to join the tour as there are plenty of off-court activities to keep non-pickleball travelers active and entertained.

Tour Organization

Every detail of the tour is taken care of from beginning to end. The handpicked 4-star hotels in both Madrid and Barcelona are located in the city center within walking distance of many historic sites. As soon as travelers step outside of the hotel they can enjoy the ambience of these vibrant Mediterranean cities: shopping, dining, museums, shows, monuments, century-old plazas, eating tapas, sipping sangria and people watching. Travelers will enjoy the hotel’s amazing buffet breakfast and friendly service in English throughout their stay. Transportation is provided to and from the airport, and we travel comfortably in luxury buses on all of our sightseeing excursions. And for travelers with special requests or who want help planning an extended stay in Spain, all you need to do is ask.

Tour Organizer

The tours are organized and run by Mike Hess. Mike is a pickleball aficionado who fell in love with the sport the first time he stepped onto the court 10 years ago. Originally from Southern California, he has been living in Spain for the past 18 years, in both Barcelona and Madrid. He is fluent in Spanish and well-versed in the local customs.

Mike started the Spanish Pickleball Association back in 2012 and has been active in helping other European countries start and grow pickleball as well. On his visits home to pickleball hotspots throughout the US, Mike was always being asked to organize a pickleball tour to Spain by players interested in traveling. In 2014, he made that happen when he launched Viva Spain Pickleball Tours.

Three tours are scheduled for 2016. In addition to the original Madrid Tour, this year we have added a new destination - Barcelona!

Pickleball Tour Spain was launched in 2014 to provide pickleball enthusiasts with a unique pickleball trip offering a behind-the-scenes look at Spain’s rich history and culture, along with a chance to enjoy pickleball throughout the journey. Pickleball players from around the world have enjoyed our custom-designed pickleball vacations to Spain in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Seville. Where the Idea for Pickleball Tours in Spain Came From

Pickleball Tour Spain was created in response to the many requests that I’ve received over the years from pickleball players asking me to organize a pickleball vacation in Spain that combines pickleball playing with cultural activities and sightseeing. The pickleball trips described in this webpage are the final result – a personally escorted tour to incredible cities along with plenty of pickleball. I’ve been planning and leading the pickleball tours since 2014 and am excited about expanding to new destinations throughout Spain in the years to come. Together with my team of locals, we look forward to providing you with an unforgettable experience both on and off the court.

Mike Hess – Director of Pickleball Tour Spain

Mike is a pickleball aficionado who fell in love with the sport the first time he stepped onto the court in 2009. Originally from Southern California, he has been living in Spain for the past 25 years, in both Barcelona and Madrid. He is fluent in Spanish and well-versed in the local customs.

As founder and President of the Spanish Pickleball Association from 2012 to 2018, Mike has spent years introducing, teaching and promoting the sport throughout Spain and Europe. He is a PPR Certified Pickleball Instructor as well as a USA Pickleball Credentialed Referee.

Mike spent over 15 years as a full-time professor of business at CUNEF University in Madrid. He was also active in promoting sport participation in his capacity as a Board Member of the National Senior Games Association (NSGA), where he also served as the NSGA National Director for Basketball.

Mike has had a lifelong passion for sports. He earned a scholarship to play basketball at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where he stayed on for two seasons as an assistant coach. He subsequently played professional basketball in Germany. He earned his undergraduate and MBA degrees from UC Irvine, and his PhD in Business Administration from IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.

My wife Lynn and I had so much fun at Pickleball in Paradise last year that we are headed to Jamaica again this year! The pickleball and players were fun and we never went thirsty or hungry. Our private snorkel boat trip to Peter Tosh Reef was a highlight as was our group dinner on the beach. Lynn and I usually don’t do all-inclusive because we enjoy cooking and looking for deals. It was nice to travel light and to have all our food prepared and drinks made for us. We also could use the paddle boards and kayaks when we wanted.

Straight Away Travel made going to Sandals even more VIP than it already is. Our agent arranged to have our favorite wine and appetizer brought to our room as soon as we got there. She informed us off all the must visit restaurants and even made sure that we had lobster on the beach one day for lunch. The popular cruise line finally realized that there’s some market overlap between people who love to play pickleball and people who love to sit on a floating resort for 10 days.

Previously, the ship only had nets for players to set up on basketball courts. Now, they have the real deal, complete with a protective cage so your failed attempt at a speed-up doesn’t go flying into the sea.
