Rabbit Rescue Information: Rabbits are adorable, soft animals that make popular pets for children. While a rabbit can make a good pet for a child, keep in mind that to be healthy a rabbit requires a quiet, calm living environment. Please only adopt a rabbit if you feel you can create a safe and quiet space for the rabbit in your home. Rabbits can be housetrained to live inside, out of a cage, which dramatically increases their life spans. Rabbits can live as long as a dog or a cat, and unfortunately some people do not approach the decision to get a rabbit with the same seriousness or commitment they might have about getting a dog.

Rabbit Trivia: Some rabbits sleep with their eyes open. Rabbits snore! A rabbit can be trained to use a litter box. A rabbit can get pregnant again just one hour after having babies! A rabbit cannot see directly ahead.

Raising Tamuk Composite meat rabbits

A Wascally Wabbitry

A Wascally Wabbit

Wascally Wabbitry breeds pure New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits with a focus on genetic diversity and meat production in hot weather. We mostly sell breeding trios.

What makes Wascally Wabbitry unique is that we breed two different strains of pure New Zealand White rabbits: TAMUK NZW and M70 NZW. Both of these are pure New Zealand White rabbits bred specifically for high efficiency meat production. These two strains have lots of genetic diversity between them and we have seen about 13% higher growth rate ("hybrid vigor") when crossing the two strains, and the offspring are still 100% pure NZW.

Alford’s Half Acre Homestead Rabbits

Alford’s Half Acre Homestead Rabbits

Our rabbitry began in May 2021 after moving to Tennessee (in the snow), to enjoy the "Homestead Life" after retirement. What started out as two New Zealand mutt rabbits soon grew quickly! The does do a fantastic job keeping us busy building more grow-out cages! We recently acquired nine more New Zealands and Chinchillas and gearing up for a prolific Spring and Summer! We keep our rabbits off the ground, in individual cages for their protection and health. They're fed a good diet of pellets, oats, and hay and in return, give us plenty of great fertilizer!

I raise extra large New Zealand and Champagne d’Argent rabbits. My stock is small numbers, and I am an educator on the subject of getting you started with rabbits on your farm or homestead. I started my rabbitry in 2018, and have had these dynamic little creatures throughout my life. Rabbits are a perfect sustainable meat source, whether you reside in town or out in the holler, and are one of the most lean meats that you can obtain. Stephen Pappas Woodbridge, New Jersey Belgian Hares, Checkered Giants, New Zealand White/Blacks/Broken, Mini Rex Red, Min Lop Solid/Broken, Tan Black/Choc, Standard Chinchilla All Jersey Rabbitry – ARBA Reg C225 It all started when I was 10 years old back in 1972 in Warwick RI my father brought me home a Tort Dutch Rabbit as a pet. One thing led to another. After our move to Narragansett RI I talked my dad into bringing me to Nugent’s Rabbitry in East Greenwich where they raised Standard Chinchilla rabbits. That is where I got my first pair. Soon after my father took me to visit Paul Jurgelonis to register all my rabbits. My first show was the RI Rabbit Breeders show, then the Bay State Rabbit Breeders show, and many 4-H shows. I did pretty well. I soon got into some New Zealand’s. My 4-H leader Walt Taylor gave me a pair to start out with. Then I ventured into Belgian Hares back in 1978. I ended up with around 100 holes at the age of 13. In 1977 I earned the ARBA Regional Leadership Award which I was proud of. In 1980 I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and soon after my parents advised me that we had a raccoon attack killing all of my rabbits. In August 2009 I led my adopted son Thomas into the rabbit fancy. He and I drove to Chicago IL to pick up our new pair of Belgian Hares from Jeannie Walton. On the home front, Sheila Scagnelli introduced me to showing again so we drove up to a Midnight Madness show in Topsfield MA, low and behold, who is Judging but Paul Jurgelonis , the man who use to register my rabbits with ARBA when I was a kid.. Not having seen him since 1977 or 78 I was quite surprised, baffled, and excited to say the least. My son won a Red Mini Rex at that show (Peaches) which turned out to be a great brood doe. He ended up being #7 in the sweepstakes that year showing only his Red Mini Rex. As we grew in showing, so did our herd of many breeds. This led to the formation of All Jersey Rabbitry. All Jersey Rabbitry is a small 70 hole rabbitry located in the East Central part of New Jersey, close to Staten Island, NYC. . My primary breeds are Belgian Hares, Checkered Giants and Standard Chinchilla’s. We also breed and exhibit Tans, Mini Lops, New Zealand Whites and Broken along with Red Mini Rex. My rabbitry is registered with ARBA (C225) and licensed in the township we are located in. I am currently a member of the following National Specialty Clubs: American Rabbit Breeders Association; American Belgian hare Club; North East Belgian Hare Club; American Tan Rabbit Specialty Club; American Checkered Giant Rabbit Club; Mini Lop Club of America; American Standard Chinchilla Association; American Federation of New Zealand Rabbit Breeders; National Mini Rex Rabbit Club My helper, Matthew Hervilly, and I (Matt has missed a few shows) , have traveled extensively showing our rabbits. He shows Mini Lops, Dwarf Hotot’s, Trianta’s and a Belgian Hare he earned from me. We have traveled to Minneapolis MN, Janesville WI, Mason MI, Taylorsville and Greensboro NC, Cumberland Co. ME, Dickson TN, Richmond VA, Charles Town, Mineral Wells and Lewisburg WV, as well as many shows in NJ, CT, MA, VT and NY. [email protected] 732-347-0785

How to help.

We are a satellite group of animal-lovers under the 501c3 Alabama Rabbit Rescue of Birmingham, but based largely in the Huntsville, Alabama area. We seek to help abandoned rabbits and provide foster/adoption and rabbit care education.

We need fosters and volunteers! If you are interested in fostering a rabbit or a pair of rabbits, please reach out and complete a foster form.

If you are interested in adopting, we currently have adoptable rabbits listed through our Facebook page and Petfinder!

Bunnies are a 10 year commitment. Remember, your bunny relies on you. By adopting a bunny, you make a promise to care for and provide for the bunny. Please only consider adopting a pet if you are committed.

We are happy to help with education about bunny care, but the love and commitment starts with you!

Help Our Cause

Your support and contributions will enable us to help rabbits in need. We use donations to provide spays, neuters, medical care, and medication.

Bunny Brigade

The Bunny Brigade is a dedicated group of specialized VCAS volunteers who provide care and enrichment for Ventura County Animal Services’ rabbits, works to place shelter rabbits in loving forever homes, educates the public regarding proper rabbit care, raises funds for supplies and medical treatments, and promotes rabbit welfare and spaying or neutering throughout the county.

VCAS rabbits are loving indoor members of your family.  They are litterbox trained and go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and flea treated.  Each adoption comes with a free bag of hay, a grass mat, and a complimentary vet visit!

Due to the prevalence of the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) in Ventura County, we encourage all prospective bunny parents to read additional information about this disease from the California Department of Food And Agriculture’s (CDFA) website.  All VCAS rabbits are vaccinated against RHD prior to leaving our care.

Ventura County Animal Services cares deeply for the animals who enter our shelter.  While some animals arrive happy and healthy, others may arrive scared, injured, ill or have behavior issues requiring attention from our dedicated teams to mend broken bones and heal broken hearts.  Our top priority is to reunite lost pets with their owners.  Stray animals are placed on a 5-day hold to give their owners time to find them.  Animals who arrive with any form of ID that leads to a known owner, are placed on an extended 7-day hold .  If you recognize your lost animal, please reclaim them during  normal business hours .  Visit our  Lost and Found  to view animals found by good Samaritans.  Animals who have not been reclaimed by their owner can be made available to adopt after their stray hold has passed.  If you are tracking an animal on our website and they suddenly disappear, it is likely because their owner came to pick them up.

Bunny Brigade Schedule

Hours are subject to change.  Contact the VCAS Bunny Brigade for an appointment for other days.  [email protected]

IMPORTANT WARNING:  Please be aware that Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV), a deadly and highly contagious disease of domestic and wild rabbits, is present in Ventura County. For the protection of your rabbit(s),  it is strongly advised that your rabbit(s) be vaccinated for RHDV before entering VCAS .  All VCAS rabbits are vaccinated; however, some risk for disease transmission remains due to the nature of this virus. VCAS is not liable for any illness or injury sustained onsite. Rabbits entering VCAS property must be secured in a pet-safe carrier.

Bunny Adoption Process:

LEARN about rabbits.   Rabbits are an 8-12-year commitment and adding a rabbit to your family should be given plenty of thought and consideration.

SUBMIT Adoption Application .   Tap/click here  to submit an adoption application for review by the Bunny Brigade.  Please allow 24-72 hours for review.  You will receive an email from the Bunny Brigade after your application is received.  We will work with you to ensure you understand:  rabbit care, proper supplies, and discuss whether a rabbit is the right fit for you and your family, as well as other pets you may have.  If you are looking for a companion for your current rabbit, please email the  VCAS Bunny Brigade  at [email protected] for information about scheduling a bunny date and finding your bunny their perfect match.

SCHEDULE an appointment.   Once your application is submitted and approved, the Bunny Brigade will work with you to schedule a time to come to the shelter and meet rabbits.  Adoptions are also by walk-in, but scheduling an appointment is preferred and is given priority.

VISIT with the rabbits.   Bring everyone in the family/household when planning to adopt a rabbit.  Plan to spend  1-2 hours  meeting our shelter rabbits and going through the adoption counseling process.  You will have an opportunity to ask questions of our trained adoption counselors and learn how to handle rabbits safely and properly. Each bunny has a unique personality and the VCAS Bunny Brigade works diligently to find the best fit for your whole family.

ADOPT. Once you have determined that a rabbit is a good fit for your home, it’s time to pick your new best friend and take them home! The adoption fee is $50, and each rabbit is spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Your bunny will also be eligible for a free wellness visit with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian and will receive a free bag of hay and a chewable grass mat upon adoption!

Please, don't abandon bunnies!

Domestic rabbits will NOT survive on their own outside.  If you cannot keep your rabbit, please try finding them a home.  Make a flyer and advertise on social media and Next Door.  It’s okay to charge a small adoption fee to dissuade those with ill intentions.  We strongly advise screening and educating potential adopters to ensure your rabbit gets a loving, safe, indoor home with proper care.  Helpful information is readily available on a variety of subjects, such as diet, housing , and the Importance of Spay and Neutering .  Please CLICK HERE  for other helpful ideas from the House Rabbit Society .  For additional resources to help re-home your rabbit, visit our  Pet Retention page .

If you were unsuccessful in re-homing your rabbit on your own and you live in areas serviced by Ventura County Animal Services, please email [email protected] for support or to schedule a time and day (based on space and availability) to bring in your bunny.  There is a $45 – $110 fee per rabbit to relinquish an owned rabbit.  Please note that VCAS does not euthanize rabbits for space or length of stay, but it can take a while to find the right home for them.

Calendar of events, why rabbits.

Our rabbits come from all sorts of places. Often they are a child’s pet and the young caretaker loses interest, especially if a calm young bunny is purchased and it becomes a “feisty” teenager or “too large” a few months after purchase. Others come from animal control, are found wandering local neighborhoods after being “set free” (which is illegal for domestic animals), come from college students who have frequent housing changes, or from families who are just “too busy” for their pet.

Not all rabbits that are given up end up in rescue. Most often they are given away to another unprepared home, and the rabbit goes through the cycle again. Others are let loose, left to find palatable grasses, avoid dogs and cars, and suffer from mites, fleas, heat stroke, and other problems.

Rabbits are the third most surrendered pet in the United States, but are still not nearly as common of a pet as a cat or dog, and are far less understood as a family pet. Many people don’t realize that they can be litterbox trained or should be spayed or neutered for both behavioral and health benefits.

A rabbit is often acquired with too-few questions asked, or given as a gift at Easter time. Others are raised as livestock, being left outdoors and not socialized, and sit all alone day after day. Neither setup makes a happy pet, or a happy family!

Our Mission

MHRR’s primary mission is to take in rabbits that need new homes, have them spayed or neutered, and find them new homes. We are a no-kill rescue; we will keep a rabbit as long as we have to until it finds a new home, whether it is 5 days or 5 years. Rabbits have their temperament evaluated before being placed up for adoption. Hay and feed, toys, treats, and litterboxes are provided to all.

To help find homes, we rely on adoption events, our own website and pet rescue websites, local veterinarians and pet stores, social media and word of mouth. Adoption fees, donations, and fundraisers are the only means to keep our rescue efforts going.

Check out our website for more information on how you can help and view our calendar to see our upcoming events!

Thanks to many of our friends and sponsors!

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus

RHDV has become endemic in all of the western United States except Washington. See our RHDV page for more information.

Our adoption days are on the second Saturday of every month at the Fair Oaks or Arden Petco from 10 am to 3 pm. See our schedule here for which store we will be. See our current adoptable rabbits on Petfinder. If you want to bring your rabbit to look for a friend or get their nails or fur trimmed, be sure to preregister as noted on our adoption schedule page.

Frontline Kills Rabbits!

NEVER use Frontline if your rabbit has fleas.See our Flea page for help with fleas on rabbits.

Effective January 1, 2012, SB 917 prohibits the sale, display or offer for sale or give away as part of a transaction, a live animal on any street, public right-of-way, parking lot, carnival, or boardwalk. SB 917 prevents animal suffering, safeguard the public, and reduce pressure on animal shelters and local governments. Text of the bill here.

Rabbits or other animals should not be sold at flea markets or by people on the street trying to sell off litters from their animals..

The Short List: Are Rabbits Right for You?

  • Rabbits are wonderful & adorable pets, but very different from dogs or cats. A rabbit may not fit everybody's situation. They have different behavior & care needs. Learn about the basic differences.
  • Read our 9 Rabbit Myths poster . Our handy Shelter Poster highlights the main points to consider a rabbit as a housepet.
  • A pet rabbit should not live outside. You will be able to enjoy & care for them better when they are inside with you. Consider these reasons.
  • Rabbits are cute & cuddly. Are you primarily interested in getting a bunny for your child? Find out if a rabbit is good pet for your child.
  • Rabbits are better suited to certain adults & households. See if you are a match.
  • Rabbits are not "starter pets". They deserve as much care & attention as a dog or cat that you would keep forever. Carefully consider your commitment to keeping a rabbit. Read our Easter Bunny Poem.
  • Although rabbits do not need vaccinations like cats & dogs, they have their own medical concerns due to their unique physiology.
  • Observe house rabbits in their natural habitat on our video page .
  • Hop to our library of fliers to learn the essentials of rabbit care & behavior.

Are You Looking to Find a New Home for Your Rabbit?

Unfortunately, the Sacramento House Rabbit Society cannot take in rabbits from private homes. This is because our first responsibility is to the rabbits at the local shelters -- they are truly "eleventh hour" rabbits and for them, the SHRS foster program may be the last chance. If you have found a rabbit, or if you wish to find another home for your own rabbit, take a look at our flyer Finding a Home for an Unwanted Rabbit. This will give you ideas for things you can do to find a loving home for your bunny.

The National House Rabbit Society site also has tips on finding a home for a rabbit you want to rehome.

Abandoning any animal is a misdemeanor under the California penal code section 597S.

If you cannot keep your rabbit, never turn them loose or abandon them. Pet rabbits are totally domesticated and depend on humans for shelter and protection. Do the humane thing and surrender your rabbit to an animal shelter. See our poster "Food; not Free"

Easter is here and we need to talk about “Easter Bunnies”. For years, live rabbits have been gifted for Easter and for years they have been dumped outside or in a shelter before their 1st birthday. Most people don’t know how high maintenance these cute pets are and are not ready for the 10-13 year commitment. Live animals are not gifts!

Reach out to us at bunnyluv to learn more about what it takes to care for a bunny and choose to gift a chocolate or stuffed bunny to your child this easter..

 About BunnyLuv

BunnyLuv Rabbit Resource Center is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), no-kill animal welfare organization. We offer education, adoption, care and supplies for domestic rabbits and the humans who love them. Since our establishment in 1996, BunnyLuv Rabbit Resource Center has helped thousands of rabbits and humans live together.

We are here to help people create and maintain a meaningful relationship with their domestic companion rabbits and to help keep their rabbits happy and healthy for a long life and mutual enjoyment. We do this by providing information free of charge, helping to reduce rabbit overpopulation and abandonment in Southern California, and providing a safe haven for neglected rabbits as they await adoption.

Adopt A Rabbit

House Rabbit Society is able to save lives thanks to people like you who choose to adopt! Each rabbit who comes to House Rabbit Society was transferred from the local animal shelters in order to buy them a little more time to find a family. Whether the rabbit comes to us because they were sick or hurt, because they were scared, or because the shelter simply had too many rabbits, we do not put a time limit on their stay with us.

Our adoption process is all digital! At this time, we are not able to accommodate walk in adoptions on-site. If you meet a rabbit at the Adoption Center, be sure to start the process ASAP!

Where can I see the rabbits for adoption?

You may view the list of rabbits for adoption in this page

What is included in the adoption?

  • All HRS rabbits are spayed/neutered.
  • All HRS rabbits are microchipped.
  • All HRS rabbits have had a veterinary exam.
  • All HRS rabbits are vaccinated for RHDV (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus).
  • We provide a cardboard carrier.
  • Adoptions come with a 1-year HRS membership which gives discounts on HRS boarding, discounts on online shopping and a subscription to the HRS journal.

What are the adoption requirements?

  • Adult Primary Caregiver: The rabbit’s primary caregiver is an adult, and is wanted by everyone in the household. No group ownership, like a classroom pet.
  • Indoor Housing: Rabbits adopted from House Rabbit Society live indoors as part of the family. Due to the emergence of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) in 2020, we strongly recommend no outdoor playtime, even when vaccinated.
  • Returns: If you need to return a rabbit adopted from HRS, we ask for 2-4 weeks’ notice, so we can have a space ready for your rabbit to return. Rabbits adopted from HRS must be returned to HRS.
  • RHDV Vaccination: Vaccination of all rabbits in the household for RHDV  is required to bring home an HRS rabbit for bonding/adoption.
  • Spay/Neuter: A ll rabbits in the home must be spayed/neutered.

Why is there an adoption donation?

Our adoption donation helps us cover the cost of the medical care that the rabbit receives here at the Rabbit Center. It is cheaper to adopt an HRS than to adopt/buy an unaltered, unvaccinated rabbit.

How often does my rabbit need their RHDV vaccination?

Eravac, Filavac and RHDV2 vaccines are yearly vaccinations.  Your HRS rabbit will need an RHDV vaccination ever year. The rabbit’s next vaccination date will be indicated in their HRS medical record that is emailed upon adoption finalization.

Why do I have to be 18 or older to adopt?

An adoption is a legally binding contract and thus must be signed by signed by an adopter 18 or older.

Why can’t my rabbit live outside?

Outdoor living is tough on rabbits. Rabbits have been domestically bred to rely on human support. Indoor living provides safety from predators, infectious diseases, parasites, temperature fluctuations as well as helps create a strong, lasting bond with their adopters.

What is the ideal rabbit home set up?

HRS highly recommends a puppy exercise pen set up with a fleece blanket and 4+ hours of free roam playtime.  We do not recommend cages especially with wire flooring as they cut into the rabbit’s paws and tend to not have enough space for adequate play or movement.
