REVIEW: VIKING RIVER CRUISE ‘PARIS TO THE HEART OF NORMANDY’ HAD ME AT HELLO!

As Humphrey Bogart said to Ingrid Bergman on that airport runway in Casablanca, “We’ll always have Paris” …

… so an invitation to board one of Viking’s Longships in the City Of Light had me at ‘hello’

VIKING PRACTICALLY INVENTED RIVER CRUISING

It seems impossible to believe that Viking sailed its first river cruises just 27 years ago. It’s true! In 1997, chartering 4 Russian river cruise ships. In no time at all, Viking invented its ‘Longships’ and began cruising the Rhine, the Danube, the Douro, the Rhone and the Seine. This writer had sailed on 7 itineraries before boarding Viking Radgrid for 8 glorious days from “Paris to the Heart of Normandy”. Never mind me, two of our fellow passengers were on their 13 th Viking cruise with another one booked in December.

WHAT MAKES VIKING SO APPEALING?

From the moment I saw Viking’s Longships on Masterpiece Theater’s Downton Abbey, I was hooked. The gleaming white ship seen floating by spectacular scenery was irresistible. And apparently, I was not alone. Viking introduced Americans to river cruising with innovative ship designs, featuring spacious staterooms with balconies, upscale amenities like heated bathroom floors and supremely comfortable hotel beds all in keeping with its Scandinavian modern décor. Their longships incorporated eco-friendly technologies like hybrid engines and solar panels. Viking’s received all kinds of awards and accolades for everything from its exceptional service and its immersive cultural experiences. And virtually everything from excursions to airport transfers to reduced or even free airfares are included. And of course, there is wine and beer with lunch and dinner (and breakfast if you must start your day with a mimosa).

WHAT MAKES VIKING’S ‘PARIS AND THE HEART OF NORMANDY’ ONE OF OUR FAVORITES EVER?

Our flight from New York landed us in Paris at midday. There, Viking’s ground crew whisked us to our waiting transportation, a big, comfortable minivan. Paris, in the throes of pre-Olympic preparations, isn’t easy to navigate. However, our driver pulled up next to Viking Radgrid in time for a late lunch and immediate access to our Veranda stateroom on Deck 2. The perfect start to a perfect adventure.

VIKING RADGRID LIVES UP TO HER NAME

Like all Viking River Longships, Viking Radgrid is named for a legendary Norse figure. Radgrid, a handmaiden of Oden, the father of the Gods, was a long-haired beautiful woman. She descended from the skies into Norse battles where she determined which soldiers lived and died. Her great power was to determine the fate of mere mortals. Fortunately, the fate of the passengers aboard our Paris to Normandy cruise was to enjoy every minute aboard this glorious Longship.

WHAT’S ON OFFER ABOARD VIKING LONGSHIPS

Once settled into their supremely comfortable staterooms and suites, guests will find themselves in the light-filled public spaces. The comfortable furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows make both the Lounge and the Dining Room perfect venues to enjoy drinks and meals and group get-togethers. At the bow of the ship, Viking’s signature Aquavit Terrace is a wonderful glass-covered dining area. In good weather dining extends onto the open deck – not a daily feature in late March in northern France. When the sun did come out, Aquavit came to life. For 360 degree views of the scenery, the entire top deck is also a mini-recreation center with a putting green and a walking track.

FELLOW TRAVELERS

One of the highlights of a Viking cruise is the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. On our “Paris to The Heart of Normandy” voyage, almost every single passenger had  shared personal ties to the United States Armed Forces. In a show of hands about 70 percent of us had a parent who had served in World War 2. I was a passenger both of whose parents served in the Canadian Armed Forces. For me and dozens of others, our trip to Normandy on this the 80 th Anniversary of D-Day, was a pilgrimage in their honor no matter where they had served. This common ground facilitated easy conversation, amplified by the exceptional introductory skills of Radgrid’s Program Director, Mia Andrews Drihem. Through these interactions, friendships blossomed, enriching every minute of the trip.

AND HOW WAS THE FOOD?

Ask anyone who has spent any time in France, food is not just part of French culture—it is the cornerstone of French identity. And it’s all wrapped up in the country’s history and its diversity. Meals In France are not just about sustenance. They’re seen as opportunities for enjoyment, socializing and savoring the finer things in life. Food aboard Viking Radgrid had much to live up to and did. French cooking has deep roots in each region of France. In the case of Normandy, that cultural heritage is rich indeed. While Viking creates menus to appeal to American palates every single meal and every single day, the Chef brings France to the table. From blissful croissants to decadent desserts, French food is celebrated at every meal. The “piece de resistance” was a dinner given over to the Food of Normandy. Normandy’s culinary heritage is rich indeed! Influenced by its coastal location and agricultural heritage, Viking Radgrid’s Chef prepared seafood, rich veal stew, pork roast with local apples, a dish called “Poulet Vallée d’Auge” made with chicken, cream, mushrooms and local cider and presented local sausages, cheeses, and patés. And of course there was a dessert selection to rival anything in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE ALONG THE WAY…

One of the great draws of this itinerary is of course Paris itself. No matter how many times we visit, Paris never disappoints. In the throes of preparation for this summer’s Olympics, the city is a bit torn up. But out of the way of the construction zones, it’s still Paris. Viking Radgrid is your ship as a hotel for a day at the beginning of the trip and a day at the end. Viking offers “Panoramic Paris” to all passengers. Like virtually all Viking excursions, these use luxury buses to ferry passengers on their tours. We hopped aboard “Panoramic Paris” and left the group halfway through for some personal exploration. Optional excursions take guests to The Palace of Versailles, to Montmartre and the one we chose, “Flavors of Paris”. A food tour, this was a wonderful way for foodies, like us, to enjoy a dive into French food, wine and culture. Limited to groups of 10, we immediately found ourselves in delightful company.

PARIS BEHIND US, WE HEAD UPSTREAM TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF NORMANDY

First stop, La Roche-Guyon with its impressive 12th Century Chateau. If you wish, on offer is a tour offering a glimpse of French Chateau life. We chose to wander through the delightfully restored gardens filled with white blossoming trees and masses of white daffodils. Aboard ship this day is given over to Painters. A Painting Class produced passengers’ masterpieces for a minor fee. A lecture about Painters along the Seine, a covered the Impressionists who lived and painted there—Pissarro, Renoir, Monet and, at the end of his life, Vincent Van Gogh. That afternoon, we sailed a short distance to Auvers-sur-Oise, made famous as the final and tragically brief home of Van Gogh. During his 70 days there, he painted 74 paintings. He is buried next to the fields he so imaginatively painted. Day three brought us to Rouen. This wonderful small city, the “Capital of Normandy, is a treat! It’s glorious Cathedral of Notre Dame may look familiar. Claude Monet painted it no less than 30 times. More recently, Rouen had a hand in Julia Child’s famous career. At a restaurant called “La Courrone” Julie ate her first meal in France! This meal her love of French food from the very first bite. Located in the Place Du Vieux Marche, –the town square where Joan of Arc met her grim end– Viking’s included walking tour ends directly in front of La Couronne. If you wish you can re-enact Julia’s life-changing lunch for 65 Euros.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP FOR MANY, THE NORMANDY BEACHES COME NEXT

Viking goes out of its way to salute the heroes of June 6th. There are two excursions here. One is to Omaha Beach, site of the American Armed Forces landing on D-Day. A Memorial Service presided over by passengers from America’s military is a moving tribute. The  second excursion is offered to the British and Canadian landing beaches. An All Things Cruise tip: Because this writer had a personal connection to the Canadian forces, we opted to take the latter excursion. We were fewer in number for sure. But our excursion includes an extraordinary extra that’s not part of the American experience. We visited Bayeux, a magnificent little town home to the Bayeux Tapestry, a UNESCO “Memory of the World”. I would be hard-pressed to choose which tour to take. Amazingly, at this writing, there was still space available in July aboard the four longships that ply the Seine.

PEACEFUL PLEASURES ROUND OUT VIKING’S RETURN TO PARIS

After yesterday’s emotional visit to Normandy’s beaches, we’re docked at everyone’s picture-perfect idea of a village in France, Les Ondelys. Dominated by the Fortification that secured Normandy for Richard the Lionhearted, last minute souvenirs and gifts here got high marks from many fellow passengers. Our final full day on Viking Radgrid, we dock in Le Pecq. An hour from Le Petit Palais, the drop off point for today’s all-day shuttle buses to central Paris, Le Pecq gave us a chance to visit Chateau Malmaison, the home of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon. Years of French history are peeled back as you wander through rooms filled with the couple’s personal belongings. The tales about each of them are simply astonishing. Example: Josephine, whose name was changed from Rose by Napoleon, never smiled in a single portrait. She had bad teeth.

That night, those of us who can never see enough of the City of Light, boarded another vessel. Proceeded by a farewell Cocktail Party and an early dinner, we travelled into Paris, boarded a river cruiser and passed the Eiffel Tower during one of its hourly evening “light shows”. Somehow it was the perfect ending to Viking’s perfectly wonderful “Paris and the Heart of Normandy”

7 Things I Loved About Viking’s Paris & The Heart Of Normandy River Cruise

  • Cruises and Sailing

  • Types of Travel
  • Viking Cruises

Being an experienced cruise lover, I was thrilled to be invited and hosted by Viking River Cruises to experience the Paris & the Heart of Normandy sailing. This was a special route for me as both of my grandfathers landed in Normandy during World War II. I had dreamed about visiting for most of my life. I also knew Viking Cruises would do an exceptional job showcasing the area, as I am a repeat cruiser with them. Here is what I loved about experiencing France with Viking River Cruises.

A Viking River Cruise, the Viking Fjorgyn, on the river Seine in France

1. A Fantastic Paris To Normandy Itinerary

When picking out cruise itineraries, finding places near and dear to your heart and spending your money toward that goal is essential. As mentioned above, this itinerary caught my attention. Our cruise started in Paris, with an overnight and 2 days of sightseeing.

We visited smaller, lesser-known towns that kept us out of heavy-traffic areas. This also brought us to interesting ports of call.

Besides Paris, we visited the towns of La Roche-Guyon, Vernon, Rouen (with overnights), Normandy beaches, Les Pecq, and Les Andelys along the Seine River.

Scenic cruising is also a big part of European river cruising. We cruised by several places that were perfect for sightseeing from our small Viking Fjorgyn verandas.

2. French History

I love any reason to learn things that help me answer Jeopardy questions. How about you? I learned a lot about French culture, history, and, most definitely, its famous artists on my Paris & the Heart of Normandy sailing.

In Les Andelys, a charming old Norman village, were the ruins of King Richard the Lion Heart’s 12th-century fortress, Chateau Gaillard, perched atop a majestic hill. Rouen offered a picturesque cathedral painted more than 30 times by Claude Monet.

I was most surprised that we went to and toured Vincent van Gogh’s last residence and burial site in Auvers-Sur-Oise. This site is a pilgrimage for art enthusiasts and has a picturesque setting. Van Gogh is buried alongside his brother, Theo.

Fun Fact: Though we didn’t stop in Giverny, France, because there is no safe place to pull over for a better view, we did see Claude Monet’s famous gardens and home of 40 years.

3. Paris Food Tour

I’ve taken my share of food tours worldwide, but having a Paris food tour offering on Viking River Cruises was a no-brainer. Our small group roamed the city on foot and by Paris Metro to taste our way through five or six local hotspots.

At one place, we sampled olive oils, vinegar, and honey. We had a trio of desserts at another spot with French coffee and hot tea. The stop I liked best was at a brewery for a cheese plate and glass of wine. Take advantage of this tour.

4. Included Excursions

A key difference between river cruising versus ocean cruising is that there are “included” excursions, meaning you don’t pay extra to do these things. Each day, Viking offers tours at each port of call.

Excursions may run 2–3 hours, or even longer, such as going to the beaches and cemetery in Normandy, which requires several hours each way on a bus. Buses are included when necessary because of distance or accessibility.

Viking Cruises does a stellar job of vetting its tour guides. Hence, they are easy to understand, are entertaining, and have control of their groups.

There are paid excursions available each day, something to consider depending on your interests.

Pro Tip: Viking uses the word “leisure” for walks or excursions that are slower-paced and easier for those with mobility issues, though they are open to anyone .

The Eiffel Tower seen from Viking River Cruises' Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise

5. Views Of The Eiffel Tower At Night

Our cruise officially “embarked” at 3 p.m. but docked overnight so guests could explore Paris independently. I liked that. Many went off to see shows or have dinner at fancy Parisian restaurants; while others, myself included, hung out on the Viking Fjorgyn and got to know the people we would be spending the week with.

From the comfort of our stateroom veranda, the lounge, or the top observation deck, we could see the Eiffel Tower right down from where we were docked. From here, we could enjoy the evening twinkling light show with no stress of fighting the crowds, or even being dressed for that matter.

Our Viking Fjorgyn ship was docked in a thriving part of Paris where something was going on at all hours, though not loud and boisterous. It is a good location for sightseeing and souvenir shopping, but keep your belongings close to your body at all times.

6. Guided Normandy Experience

Normandy is 3 hours from Paris, or 90–120 minutes from Rouen, where we docked to see half of the Paris to Normandy itinerary stops. I was familiar with and loved the neighboring Brittany region of France.

Our day at the Normandy beaches involved a long bus ride, but it was worth it! First up was a stop at the Mémorial Caen Museum, which tells the story of World War II. It has a noteworthy gift shop as well. If you are looking for souvenirs, buy them here.

Included with our Viking River Cruise was lunch at the museum. Our group had a separate dining area with a tasty plated meal, wine, and dessert. I had seen the roped-off area during museum free time and commented on how fancy and nice it looked. Imagine my surprise when they corralled us into the space. I thought this was a very special touch to our long day.

The Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France

Next, we headed to the Normandy American Cemetery for a somber presentation and dedication to the military on our sailing. It was a charming special touch when our tour guide arranged for a floral display to be placed at the base of the Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves bronze statue.

Lastly, we arrived at the Omaha Beach location, famed for D-Day arrivals and many casualties. There was time to walk around, take pictures and videos, pay tribute to our loved ones and fallen soldiers, and reflect on the importance of this location.

Tissues are recommended.

Pro Tip: This is American property. Our guide encouraged us to take home souvenir sand if we wanted. Luckily, I brought an empty water bottle for this reason. You may want to, too.

7. French-Themed Dinner

Hold on to your hats for the French food extravaganza buffet night; it is sensational in every way. Have your cameras ready, because everything here is photo-worthy.

As the guests entered the dining room, you could hear the “oohs” and “aahs” escaping every mouth. Table after table was eloquently dressed and loaded with fancy plates and boards of food that were specific to the region.

Besides the gourmet cheese boards, spread of salads, and charcuterie, there were also glasses of wine and champagne. The staff blended well with their striped shirts, berets, and stylish threads that were so chic and “gay Paris.” This is one lively event.

Even as a foodie, there were many things I was not familiar with on the buffet line and tables. This is your perfect opportunity to try it all; the food was well labeled and Viking is particular about food allergies. Don’t skip the duck pâte — it was some of the best I’ve ever had.

You’ll be dreaming of the delicious mini-desserts, as well. The French-themed buffet was my favorite dinner night on the ship.

Viking Fjorgyn: Cruising Paris and Normandy

By: Author Melody Pittman

Viking Fjorgyn: Cruising Paris and Normandy

Though most river cruisers start on the Rhine or Danube Rivers, the Paris to Normandy route is another sensational cruise option. I set sail on the Viking Fjorgyn in the late fall of 2022 for an epic adventure on the Seine River with less than 200 passengers. The week featured a small number of passengers and a fabulous itinerary, with attractive port of calls, fantastic food, and fellowship, and put another memorable Viking River Cruise under my belt.

viking-fjorgyn-ship

Viking Overnight in Paris

Paris is the hub of architectural gems, French culture, and that highly desired fabulous French cuisine. It is billed as one of, if not the, most romantic city in the world . The “City of Lights” is featured in literature, dance, film, and music, while the city center’s most famous Champs-Élysées is a must-see shopping destination.

eiffel-tower-at-night

Paris offers 37 spectacular bridges, and fabulous attractions, including the Louvre Museum, Arc de Triomphe, and of course, the Eiffel Tower.

street-scenes-in-paris-france

Panoramic Paris Via Viking Fjorgyn

The Viking Fjorgyn river cruise includes a bus tour (and some on foot) around Paris. You will see the most famous sights, the Champs-Élysées, Eiffel Tower , the Arc de Triomphe, and much more. Our guide shared valuable insights about the City of Lights, and we rode around in a very comfortable bus.

seine-river-cruising-and-bridge

Take your free time to explore Notre Dame Cathedral, the nearby cafes (great for sipping chocolate, coffee, or pastry), and souvenir shops. The excursion will also drive by the world-famous Louvre and Opera House; have your cameras or phone handy.

There are three optional excursions (fee applicable) on this day in Paris: a food tour, Montmartre Hill, or Sacré-Coeur. I chose the food tour.

Flavors of Paris: An Optional Viking Excursion

I’ve visited Paris before, but this was the most fun thing I’ve done in the city. Our guide picked us up at the ship, walked us several blocks away, and took us to the Paris Metro. We boarded the transit system to get to our tour’s correct part of town.

We meandered four to six blocks, stopping for tasty treats. Our taste buds indulged in macarons and hand-crafted gourmet chocolates from  RICHART  (since 1925), cheese and wine from O’Neil Beer Bar & Bistro, and a foursome of delightful pastries from Paul.

Our choices at  Paul were a hot chocolate or coffee, both of which were terrific.

paris-food-tour-pastries-and-cheese

A stop at the  Maison Brémond 1830  gourmet foods store brought samples of honey, oils, vinegar, and sweets. It was also a primo spot for souvenirs, plus they carried calissons, the French candies I discovered (and loved) on a previous Costa cruise to Aix-en-Provence.

paris-food-tour-street-scene

Later that evening, we returned to the ship for a fantastic Paris-inspired buffet night. The staff was dressed in adorable get-up and served a huge selection of French foods, cheeses, wines, cured meats, and scrumptious sweet treats.

Highlights of the Viking Fjorgyn Cruise and Epic Scenery

You don’t need to step off the Viking Fjorgyn ship to have a wonderful vacation. Choose a book from the library, take part in the lectures or ship talks, indulge in gourmet meals and snacks, listen to the musicians, take in the sights during the scenic river cruising, or sleep in. The possibilities are endless.

fjorgyn-ship-seating-area-and-library

And don’t fret over the dress code. Viking encourages you to be you, dress as casual or stylish as you wish, there are no rights or wrongs. Appropriate walking shoes are necessary for your off ship excursions, but other than that, anything goes.

The temps in Paris were quite colder than we anticipated, but nearby shops and street vendors made it possible for us to pick gloves, hats, and scarves. There were several people proudly sporting berets. When in Paris…

Fun Fact: The iconic French beret heat accessory, which became popular in the 1840s, is actually called a Laulhère.

Or, grab all the excitement you can. Participate in the daily excursions, wander through the local towns, see the sights, and taste the culinary treasures of each port of call.

I love that Viking River Cruises takes you to places you may have yet to consider in the past and highlights the cruise line has perfected through its voyages.

white-cliffs-in-france-seine-river

I also encourage you to meet and mingle with the other cruise guests. You already share a love of travel with the 100-200 guests; you might make some deeper connections. I have friends that I keep in touch with years later from each of my Viking River cruises.

It could also be someone you want to travel with in the future.

La Roche-Guyon

La Roche-Guyon is a quaint village with a 15th-century church, a striking town hall, and a public fountain. Chateau de La Roche-Guyon  is the city’s hallmark and garnered attention from Claude Monet (Father of Impressionism) and poet Victor Hugo.

We were only in the port of La Roche-Guyon for a half day, but it was a pleasant place to stroll around.

Angie and I took a stroll around town on our own to admire the narrow streets and half-timbered houses, plus take a zillion pictures. Most of the shopkeepers open at 11 or noon, so nothing was open during our visitation hours.

la-roche-guyan-town-and-castle

Auvers-sur-Oise

Vernon was our ship’s home for the rest of the day. We had a ship excursion that lasted almost five hours as soon as we arrived. We set out by bus to explore Auvers-sur-Oise, which looked straight out of a fairy tale, enhanced by the dreary weather and rain.

Here, we explored L’Auberge Ravoux, where Vincent Van Gogh lived and died. We also visited the Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Catholic Church and Daubigny Museum, but we mostly strolled around the charming town, seeing many monuments and gardens.

The tour concluded at the gravesite of Vincent and Theo van Gogh in the municipal cemetery.

vincent-van-gogh-gravesite

Fun Fact: We passed Claude Monet’s famous house and garden on our drive, but there was nowhere for our bus to pull over for a closer look.

Vernon’s points of interest are the Collegiate Notre Dame, a Gothic church built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the Chateau of Vernon ruins, and the Vernon Museum, which houses original works by Monet.

I thoroughly enjoyed cookies and macarons from  Boulangerie Mum’s  on the main street.

auvers-sur-oise-town-and-painting-sites

Les Andelys

Les Andelys is often mentioned as one of France’s most beautiful villages. This delightful Middle Ages town is home to the mighty fortress,  Chateau Gaillard , built in 1196 by Richard the Lionheart.

chateau-gaillard-richard-the-lionhearted-castle

The French king sieged the castle at his death and launched a series of battles. You can take the walking tour, which has a steep incline to get up or see the town on your own.

My friend Angie and I chose to do it on our own, exploring both sides of town, a cemetery, and the riverside. The murals were magnificent, but the shops were all closed during our visit.

chateau-gaillard-les-andelys

Rouen Walking Tour

We took a two-hour tour of Rouen, the preeminent capital of Normandy, after several hours of scenic cruising in the morning. This lovely town is set amidst chalk cliffs along the Seine River. You’ll find 700 half-timbered houses in the Old Town.

scenic-cruising-in-france

The medieval charm of Rouen makes it a great place to uncover the romantic charms of France—not to mention its vibrant history.

Rouen Cathedral  sat on a hillside and was a place Claude Monet was repeatedly drawn to. He painted the Notre Dame Cathedral during different times of day for the dramatic and varying light. Its trio of towers is the tallest in France, with the center spire being 490 feet.

Rouen was created in 744 AD and is also the site of Market Square, where Joan of Arc’s last stand took place. She was condemned for heresy and burned at stake in 1431. William the Conqueror also died here in 1087.

Not to worry, when you return from your epic sightseeing days, Viking Cruises will have a fantastic spread of foods (and drinks) waiting for you. Often you are greeted when getting onboard with a cocktail or cordial, but mealtimes are when your stomach will really be appreciative.

A few of my favorite items to be on the lookout for are the cheese soufflé, fish & chips, and escargot, which is sinfully delicious.

Picturesque Honfleur: An Optional Viking Excursion

A thrilling part of my Viking Paris to Normandy trip was the day trip to Honfleur, a powerful trading port in the Middle Ages on the Seine River favored by impressionists.

This picture-perfect destination has a historic harbor, gorgeous timber-framed buildings, winding streets and pathways, and quaint shops with adorable goods. I packed a lot of adjectives in that sentence because Honfleur packs a powerful punch, and everything there is simply wonderful.

Did You Know? Claude Monet painted 30 works of art in the Rouen Cathedral .

melody-pittman-in-honfleur-france

Cold temps and rain couldn’t dishearten our trip to Honfleur; it is charming regardless of the weather. Our guide led us through the twisty, turning streets as she shared historical facts about the area and its colorful past.

Just when we thought the fairytale scenery couldn’t be any better, another road came to trump the last.

The sheer number of boats and maritime vessels at Le Vieux Bassin took our breaths away. St. Catherine’s Church was quite a find, much different from France’s typical historic churches. It remains the oldest wooden church in the country.

honfleur-harbor-and-yachts

We explored Honfleur as a group and then had free time on our own. Angie and I dashed to a few shops for souvenirs, gourmet foods, and adorable-as-can-be hats. The group met at a local cafe afterward, where we had a choice of crepes and hot coffee or tea.

Because Honfleur is in France’s Calvados region, an apple or pear brandy of the same name is highly popular. You will see it on menus in various recipes or in pure form, or you can buy some to take with you from a local shop.

Normandy Beach Excursion

Refrain from letting the 11-hour time frame of this excursion deter you. There is a two-hour drive each way, a museum tour with a catered lunch,  a Normandy American Cemetery  visit, and time for walking the beaches of Normandy.

There were options to pick Omaha Beach or an alternative Commonwealth Tour option. Our American group almost all headed to Omaha.

Visiting the cemetery was so incredible; I hardly had words for it. We wandered around amid heavy rain, then met up for a ceremony to present a floral spray to the World War II Unknown Soldier for those who perished during the war. The reflecting pool was a nice touch to the 172-acre property.

Our guide brought the flowers, and the crowd came together for a few words, the wreath laying, and the playing of  Taps . The ceremony takes place at the “Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” statue, which is the cemetery’s focal point.

memorial-statue-normandy-cemetery

Military personnel was called on to come forward and thanked for their service. This made it possible for a group photo of our service members. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd.

After visiting the  Luxembourg American Cemetery on  yet another Viking River Cruise, I was so thankful for this opportunity.

FYI : This is the first American cemetery on European soil and contains graves of 9,386.

gravesites-normandy-cemetery

Lastly, we drove to nearby Omaha Beach, the site of the D-Day Invasion, on June 6th, 1944. On D-Day, the Allies invaded France, then occupied by the Germans, with the Normandy landings.

We had learned from the museum visit’s engaging movie that many of our young troops died trying to swim from the boats or parachutes. That was just the beginning of the unimaginable things that would transpire.

Remaining on the hallowed beach are a few reminders of D-Day and a thought-provoking stainless-steel sculpture commemorating the American soldiers by artist Les Braves.

Realizing a Childhood Bucket List Item

Both of my grandfathers landed at Normandy during the D-Day invasion. Both were in the Army and from West Virginia.

My grandfather (mother’s father) sent my grandmother a picture of him in uniform, sitting on a bench shortly after arriving in Normandy. He wrote a personal note on the back, telling her he loved her and hoped to make it home to her. That picture is and has been one of my prized possessions for life, namely since he passed away when I was 12.

I was beyond thrilled, cue the tears, to stand on the hallowed ground where my grandfather(s) arrived, walked, fought, and was injured, earning him the Purple Heart medal.

It was a privilege to be in Normandy and take a picture of my beloved picture with the haunting ocean surf behind it, a treasure I will hold dear forever.

I thank Viking River Cruises for helping me achieve this lifelong bucket list.

Pro Tip:  Bring a container, sandwich bag, or empty water bottle to take some sand home with you. They allowed and encouraged it.

Le Pecq for Chateau de Malmaison

We arrived in Le Pecq for a few hours to enjoy the daily excursion to visit Napoléon’s  Chateau de Malmaison . Except for the Normandy beaches, this was my favorite excursion.

Napoléon bought the chateau for his wife, later Empress Josephine, who secured the deteriorating property in 1799 while her husband was away fighting. She painstakingly overhauled the home, spending a small fortune to fit her taste, still apparent on a visit today.

Josephine lived the rest of her life at the Chateau de Malmaison, spending much time in the charming gardens she worked so hard on. They were not in bloom during our visit, but they were still beautiful.

chateau-de-malmaison

Though Napoléon and Josephine divorced, she remained at the grand home. It became a place of many scandals, yet a tumultuous and romantic love story. Napoléon returned to Chateau de Malmaison one time before being exiled. It was the last time the couple would lay eyes on one another.

josephines-chateau-in-france

Visitors can see many of the 24 rooms, with the dining room, bedroom, and library being my favorites. The shared bed (pictured below) was almost unheard of for its time, especially from royalty. I found the furnishings, including the fabric ceiling, to be impeccable.

The entire house was a delight to browse.

Other Optional Excursions

The  Palace of Versailles  was the most sought-after optional cruise excursion. I had done this on a Viking Paris to Swiss Alps itinerary, so I skipped it this time. The Palace of Versailles was the principal residence of French kings, ranging from Louis XIV to Louis XVI. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the center of power, art, and science.

The drive to the Palace of Versailles is more than an hour each way, and a tour, plus free time is offered.

Around 15 million people visit the Palace of Versailles, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Thousands visit daily, so having quick access and a private guide without waiting is a big deal.

This is one of the perks of sailing with Viking Cruises on the Viking Fjorgyn.

Viking Normandy Cruise: Eiffel Tower

After our flight from California, what a joy to wake up and enjoy breakfast on the deck of the Viking Skaga, while soaking in this magnificent view of the Eiffel Tower and the French Statue of Liberty on the Pont de Grenelle.

Viking Normandy Cruise, City of Light

Explore the City of Light

Viking offers a wide itinerary of Paris tours from its ships, so if it's your first time in this "City of Light," a tour of Paris in the comfort of your luxurious Viking bus, with stops at every destination along the way, is definitely the way to go! Your ship is docked within easy walking distance to many of the famous Parisian sites, so don't be hesitant to stretch your legs and explore this city's beauty on your own.

Viking Normandy Cruise, boarding the Viking Skaga

It's a great feeling to step aboard our "floating hotel" to begin a magical tour along the scenic Seine River. What a pleasure to unpack our bags once and settle back to enjoy a stress-free adventure through the heart of Normandy.

Viking Normandy Cruise, anniversary bike ride

Biking bliss

This couple opted to celebrate their 10th anniversary onboard the Viking Skaga cruise. As avid bike riders, they were delighted to pedal their way along the beautiful paths of Normandy as part of their romantic anniversary adventure.

Viking Normandy Cruise, the picturesque village of La Roche-Guyon

The picture-perfect village of La Roche-Guyon

Our first stop is the ancient and picturesque village of La Roche-Guyon, which lies within a French regional nature park. This idyllic setting is home to a number of historic monuments from various centuries. The beguiling 12th-century Chateau de La Roche-Guyon is undoubtedly one of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

Viking Normandy Cruise, the picturesque village of La Roche-Guyon

Experiencing one of France's most beautiful villages

Set along the Seine, the charming town of La Roche-Guyon, officially named one of France's most beautiful villages, is best known for the impressive castle overlooking the city. The Chateau Gaillard, built in 1196 by Richard the Lionheart, commands an imposing spot high on the cliffs above. The castle, and the strategic location, bolstered the importance of the Les Andelys region throughout the Middle Ages.

Viking Normandy Cruise, souvenir shopping

Collecting travel souvenirs

It's always smart to shop for souvenirs in small towns, where prices are reasonable, and you can bring home an authentic memory of your delightful trip.

Viking Normandy Cruise, gourmet lunch on deck

Cruisin' down the Seine

Can you imagine a better place to enjoy a gourmet lunch than on the deck of the Viking Skaga, where you can watch the lovely Norman countryside roll by as you wine and dine, Viking-style?

Viking Normandy Cruise, French mussels

Impeccable cuisine

Speaking of dining, the Viking cuisine caters to every taste and dietary restriction. If you're a lover of seafood, you've come to the right place. No one knows how to cook fresh mussels like the French!

Viking Normandy Cruise, medieval Rouen cathedral

The medieval wonders of Rouen

Rouen is known as the "City of a Hundred Spires," but none stand so tall and magnificently as that of the Rouen Cathedral, consecrated in 1063. This cathedral remains one of France's most breathtaking medieval monuments.

Viking Normandy Cruise, whimsical street scene - Rouen, France

Whimsical views

Whimsy pairs with history as you explore the cobblestone streets of old Rouen, where you can stroll for hours and savor the magical views that meet your eye during your journey.

Viking Normandy Cruise, modern office along the Seine

Embracing the modern

The old merges with the new along the Seine, where modern buildings blend with medieval castles and towns in an eclectic mix of visual experiences you'll embrace during your voyage. The stunning architecture of the government office of Rouen is an excellent example of the juxtaposition of modern and ancient architecture in this fascinating city.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Le Gros Horloge - Rouen, France

It's "time" to visit Le Gros Horloge

Le Gros Horloge, is a significant visitor attraction located in the heart of Rouen's Old Town. The Renaissance facade features a golden sun with 24 rays against a starry blue background, and a dial that measures eight feet across. The clock is flanked by a Gothic belfry which houses a clockmaker museum, and you can climb to the upper terrace to take in spectacular views of the city and the majestic Rouen Cathedral.

Viking Normandy Cruise, chateaubriand steak

Chateaubriand, anyone?

The history of this famous steak hails back to 1822, when the nobleman of the same name served as the ambassador of France in England and was served this delicacy. The name itself was originally applied to how the meat was prepared, however over the years, this choice filet of beef has carried this famous appellation. The talented Viking chefs certainly know how to carry on the tradition in their preparation of this classic dish.

Viking Normandy Cruise, wine pour

In vino veritas

What is a gourmet meal without a glass or two of wine? Viking serves complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Your gracious servers are attentive and are always on the lookout to refill an empty glass!

Viking Normandy Cruise, the picturesque town of Vernon

The charming town of Vernon, gateway to the Monet estate

Vernon is a delightful bourgeois village of cobblestone streets and half-timbered buildings. Don't miss an evening stroll through town where you can marvel at the Notre-Dame Church, an impressive Gothic structure built between the 11th and 16th centuries. The Monet estate is located in Giverny, a short drive from the city.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Monet's home and garden tour

Go back in time in Monet's home and garden

Claude Monet is known as the "father of impressionism" and a visit to his family home and estate will make you feel as if you are immersed in one of his marvelous paintings.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Monet home tour

Discover the artist, room by room

Monet's rambling two-story home is filled not only with lovely furnishings of the time and personal effects, but also copies of his work which can be admired in several of the rooms you'll see on your tour (the originals are displayed in major museums around the world).

Viking Normandy Cruise, Monet's garden

Floral delight

It's no wonder Monet's garden was an inspiration throughout his career as a painter. One just can't get enough of the profusion of flowers bursting forth in every area of the many garden plots on the property, which continue to bring joy to visitors to this day.

Viking Normandy Cruise, special celebrations

Celebrate good times

A cruise onboard a Viking ship is the perfect way to commemorate a special occasion. This group set up their trip to celebrate several anniversaries and birthdays as part of their cruise adventure. To the joy of all, each occasion was treated to a special song and lavish dessert by the talented Viking crew.

Viking Normandy Cruise, scrumptious flan

Vive le flan!

Needless to say, French desserts are known around the world, and no one makes a better flan than the French. Luckily, you can enjoy this tasty pastry onboard the Viking Skaga.

Viking Normandy Cruise, vegetarian & vegan cuisine

Vegetarian and vegan options

Vegans and vegetarians will thrill at the number of dishes available on the Viking menu, one more tempting than the next. Many of the fruits and vegetables are locally sourced to guarantee freshness and farm-to-table flavor.

Viking Normandy Cruise, colorful mixed drinks

Drinks of all colors

On a celebratory party night held for guests towards the end of the cruise, staff mixologists produce a variety of colorful fruit cocktails – a feast for the eyes, as well as the palate.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Viking-inspired jewelry

An emblem of Viking heritage

The Viking Skaga has a small but interesting gift shop on board. This piece of jewelry caught our eyes, as this is one of several designs that serve as a distinctive emblem of the Viking heritage evident throughout the ship. The motif is believed to have first been forged into a brooch by Vikings, excellent metallurgists who created a variety of jewelry as far back as 800 CE. It's available for sale in the gift shop, together with signature books and clothing.

Viking Normandy Cruise, the expansive sun deck

Walk or relax on the spacious sun deck

Visit the ship's expansive sun deck and enjoy unobstructed views of the passing scenery from above, either on a comfortable lounge or while getting some exercise on the walking path.

Viking Normandy Cruise, View on Omaha Beach from Juno Beach

Lest we forget

One of the most poignant travel moments for Viking guests was a visit to the Normandy beaches where, on June 6, 1944, in the early hours of the morning, the World War II D-Day landings began. By day's end, an 80-mile stretch of the seemingly impregnable Atlantic Wall (a 2,400-mile coastal defense system built by Hitler along the English Channel's northern coast) had been breached by the Allies. This photo was taken from Juno Beach with the cliffs of Omaha Beach in the distance.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Omaha Beach

A foot in the sand

It was a touching moment when Viking passengers were given the opportunity to personally set foot on the hallowed shores of Omaha Beach, in a personal salute to the thousands of brave men who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom.

Viking Normandy Cruise, American Cemetery, Omaha Beach

The American Cemetery at Omaha Beach

In a final emotional tribute, Viking guests had the opportunity to visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach to experience a ceremony honoring the sacrifices of the brave soldiers who were part of the Allied invasion 78 years ago.

Viking Normandy Cruise, Paris farewell sunset

Au revoir, Paris

Paris blessed us with a glorious sunset the final night of our cruise. Together with our other cruise companions, we prepared to return home, bringing with us memories of this voyage of discovery that will last a lifetime.

Viking River Cruise Paris to Normandy

Cliff in Normandy looking out to the ocean.

Paris and Normandy are hubs of history in the north of France, veritable bastions of the vibrant and distinct French culture. These are the places where numerous history-changing events took place, from the Storming of the Bastille to D-Day. So, going on a Paris to Normandy river cruise is a journey through world history .

Of course, you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to indulge in delicious French cuisine and see some of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Paris to Normandy River Cruise: What to Expect

As a cruise line, Viking started off as a river cruise line (they now also have Viking Ocean Cruises ). They almost singlehandedly transformed the river cruise industry in Europe. With their award-winning longships, designed for ultimate maneuverability on Europe’s meandering waterways, they’re able to offer cozy comfort, but also immersive hands-on experiences.

In fact, it’s that immersive travel aspect that distinguishes Viking from other major cruise lines. Their premier goal is to offer The Thinking Person’s Cruise® , as they themselves call it. This means that a Viking River cruise from Paris to Normandy means diving headfirst into the French culture and history.

This is achieved through a variety of on-board and on-shore activities. From a well-stocked library on the ship and presentations by guest lecturers to visits to renowned museums, wine tastings and much more, the Viking experience is meant to involve all your senses.

Additionally, Viking distinguishes itself in the river cruise industry because it does not do what other major cruise lines do do. There are, for example, no casinos, no photographers, no inside staterooms, no umbrella drinks and no formal nights,… Immersive in-depth experiences that trigger all senses are what Viking stands for, which is also very apparent on the amazing Paris and the Heart of Normandy Viking River Cruise.

Sailing on the River Seine from Paris to Normandy

viking river cruise paris to normandy

Paris & the Heart of Normandy

My mom and I take an annual trip together each year. Usually, we pick a place neither of us has been to before and I spend weeks researching, organizing and planning. My mom is, as I like to say, direction challenged, so I know I have to carefully arrange everything down to the tiniest detail.

In December 2018, we decided to take a last minute trip and I know I didn’t have the energy or inclination to plan anything strenuous.

So when we heard about a river cruise along the Seine River, from Paris to Normandy, we figured it would be the perfect stress free trip to a destination that we love.

We’ve sailed with Viking previously (recap here ) so we knew first hand how relaxing they can be and how well taken care of they make you feel! Today I’m reviewing our Paris cruise, what we thought about the excursions, Normandy tour and more!

Viking River Cruise Review: Paris to Normandy

The Paris to Normandy route is perfect for history buffs and especially World War II history aficionados. The route dives deep into Normandy, a French region on the northern coastline that faces the English Channel.

Originally settled by Vikings, it has a long history of famous battles and fierce fighters, from the Vikings who originally settled the area, to the Norman conquest of England and the Hundred Years War where Joan of Arc was famously burned at the stake.

But most likely, you’ve heard of Normandy for the role it played in WWII. Five Normandy beaches were the landing sites for Operation Overlord in June 1944, where the Allied powers coordinated a massive offensive invasion to free German occupied France and begin the end of Nazi military superiority.

June 2019 will mark the 75th anniversary of D Day so there’s no more momentous time to visit Normandy.  Here’s a snapshot of our 7 day itinerary and what we saw and learned each day.

Day 1: Arrive in Paris

We took a red eye flight from JFK to Paris and since our our flights are booked through Viking, their reps meet us at the airport. The transfer is easy, and after a roughly 1 hour drive, we pull up to the ship!

Our ship is the Viking Rolf, a beautiful and modern glass structure. We grab lunch, unpack in our cabin and have half a day to explore. We opt to see St. Germaine en Laye, the small city nearby, which Viking offers as a bonus excursion.

This residential suburb is about 30 minutes west of Paris and one of the most affluent neighborhoods for Parisians to live in. It’s known for its Château, which the German Army used as their headquarters in World War II. If you want an excellent view of Paris, head up to the long stone terrace in front of the castle!

In the evening, we have a welcome lecture from the Program Director, eat dinner, and listen to opera singers in the lounge.

Day 2: Paris Sightseeing

On our first full day, we wake up early for breakfast and a full day of exploring Paris. The included tour is part bus, part walking tour through Paris’ most iconic sights, like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and Champs-Élysées.

We’ve been to Paris many times before, and I lived in the city for a bit as a student, so we opt to skip the guided tour but take the Viking coach into town to embark on our own little pre planned tour. I stock up on my favorite macarons (Pierre Hermé), do some shopping and savor the feel of being back in my favorite city in the world.

If this is your first time to Paris, Viking has a number of optional tours that you can take advantage of, like a guided tour of the Louvre Museum and a guided walk through Montmartre and its famous basilica.

At night, we return to the ship for dinner and start our cruise on the Seine.

Day 3: Giverny & Vernon

In the morning, we drove through Giverny and Claude Monet’s home.

If you take the cruise in spring/summer, you’ll have a chance to see his home and beautiful gardens , where Monet painted his most famous works. I visited as a student and my favorite section was the Japanese bridge and water lilies.

We were visiting in winter, so instead we traveled to Auvers-sur-Oise , a provincial town where many Impressionist artists lived and painted. The village is most famous as the resting place of Vincent Van Gogh, who rented a boarding house near the main square.

In the afternoon, we explored the medieval town of Vernon , most famous for its half timbered houses. Make sure to spot the Maison du Temps Jadis, the House of Past Times, which dates back to the 15th century!

Day 4: Rouen, France

In the morning, we had a leisurely morning cruising the Seine, passing a series of locks upstream to reach the heart of Normandy : its capital Rouen.

This medieval city was extremely important in the Middle Ages and today boasts beautiful architecture, a gilded astronomical clock and impressive Gothic cathedral.

It’s also the burial site of Richard the Lionheart and the resting place of Joan of Arc, who was burned at the stake in the old market square, Place du Vieux Marché.

We took a guided walking tour to explore the heart of the Old Town and had free time to browse the Christmas markets. At night, the Rouen Cathedral lights up for a pretty night show that you’ll want to see.

Day 5: D Day Beaches

Day 5 was the highlight of the cruise: a jam packed day through the historic beaches of Normandy .

There are 2 simultaneous tracks offered: one to visit the American memorials and another to visit the British and Canadian memorials. We opted for the American tour.

It took us to Arromanches with its Mulberry harbors and D Day Landing Museum, the German gun batteries at Longues-sur-Mer and lunch at the local golf club.

After lunch, we had a moving visit to the American Cemetery , where Viking had organized a beautiful memorial service and honored the veterans on board.

The long, emotional day ended with a short stop at Omaha Beach, a haunting stretch of coastline facing the English Channel. Our guide for the day was excellent.

Day 6: Les Andelys, France

Our day kicked off with a massive downpour, as if France felt the emotional after effects of our visit to the sobering WWII memorials yesterday.

By early afternoon, we sailed into Les Andelys, a small town fortified in the Middle Ages by Château Gaillard. Today, the castle is a crumbling ruin, but it’s worth the steep climb for the excellent view of the Seine and village below.

We took a guided walking tour into town and afterwards had free time to browse through the cute antique stores and cafes.

Day 7: Back to Paris

On the agenda for our last full day was a visit to Mantes-la-Jolie, the town where Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine spent their final days. Unfortunately, lock workers were going on strike so we sailed straight for Paris.

We had booked the optional tour to Versailles, but Yellow Vest protesters had amped up their demonstrations and effectively shut down Paris. With everything in the capital closed, Viking organized an excellent alternative: a visit to the Château de Chantilly.

This phenomenal castle belonged to the Orléans family and houses the Musée Condé, one of the finest collections of art paintings in France after the Louvre. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the horse staples alone could be mistaken for another Château.

Few visitors get to see Chantilly because there isn’t easy public transport nearby, so it was incredible to be able to see it with Viking!

Paris to Normandy Itinerary

This is our second time sailing with Viking. Previously, we explored the Rhine River on their Basel to Amsterdam cruise – you can read more about our itinerary and experience here .

Viking handles everything, so these river cruises make for the perfect leisurely vacation. You get to sit back, enjoy a very comfortable ship, excellent meals and soak in local culture, history and sights with some knowledgeable guides.

For each day of the sailing, there is 1 included tour and typically, an optional tour where you can book an add on excursion if you wish.

Here’s a recap of our daily itinerary with Viking:

I would recommend this trip if you enjoy World War II history and want a deeper understanding of French culture.

The Viking Rolf

I wrote an in-depth review of our experience with Viking River Cruises after we took our first cruise on the Rhine River. Head over to this post if you want more detail on our experience with the booking process, flights, tours, staff, ship and cabin.

As always, the staff on board really make such a great impression. They joke with you, remember your meal preferences and treat you with such warm hospitality.

I wanted to share some travel tips for this specific Paris & Normandy itinerary.

Depending on the season that you visit, the itinerary will be slightly modified. Giverny and Monet’s house is only open from late March to late October. Winter cruises, which we took, will visit Auvers-sur-Oise instead, swapping Monet for Van Gogh!

Since it was winter, we did not really use the balcony. If you’re visiting in good weather, you might like the spacious suites, which have an extra sitting room.

Cruising on the Seine River

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Viking’s river cruise fleet is modern, beautiful and light filled. But, the longships are a bit too big to turn around in Paris proper, so our cruise docked outside the city in the port of Le Pecq, which sits at the foot of the Chateau of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

The distance is roughly 20 km from Paris. If you want to go into the city, you can take a taxi (about a 30 minute ride), or you can walk to the RER in Saint Germain (10 minute walk) and take the metro into the city.

Note: mooring sites can change – verify the port on your travel documents.

As someone who has been to Paris many times, I didn’t mind at all. Viking offered shuttle service into Paris, but instead we took them up on the shuttle to see St. Germain-en-Laye. This residential suburb is like a mini Paris, with beautiful architecture, quaint outdoor cafes and some small shops.

St. Germain-en-Laye is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods surrounding Paris. Check out the 12th century church and castle, and make sure to soak in the view of Paris in the distance. You can even walk back from the Chateau de St. Germain to the ship; it is roughly 15 minutes downhill.

If it’s your first time visiting Paris, I’d recommend extending your stay either before or after the cruise to explore Paris in depth.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Viking always has great food on board. Often when we got back to the ship, there would be a hot beverage or snack offered and for the drinkers, there is house wine and beer offered at both lunch and dinner.

What I really liked, was the introduction to Normandy cuisine ! Typically, Viking has one dinner on board where the dining room transforms from a seated 3 course meal service to a more casual, colorful local food day.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Normandy Food

We had a buffet style ‘ Taste of Normandy’ complete with a huge melted cheese wheel ( raclette ), tons of charcuterie, mouth watering cheese board and my personal favorite: fresh, hot mussels ( moules )! The staff were dressed up in Breton striped shirts and one entertainer played the accordion!

If you’re a big foodie, try the optional food tour. It includes a taste of local ciders, Normandy’s famous Calvados brandy and special cinnamon apple tarts.

Visiting the Normandy Beaches

With the 75th anniversary of D-Day coming up, I’m sure many people are interested in the Paris to Normandy cruise for the visit to the Normandy beaches.

Viking offers two tracks – you choose which one you prefer.

Commonwealth D Day Memorial

The Commonwealth tour focuses on the Norman conquests which impacted the British Commonwealth and includes a visit to the Bayeux Tapestry. It drives through Gold and Juno Beaches where the British and Canadians landed, respectively; the Pegasus Museum; and the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian cemetery and British cemetery at Ranville.

American D Day Memorial

The American tour focuses on the American landing site of Omaha and visits the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, among others.

Our jam packed day started early, as the ship docks in Rouen and it took us about 2 hours each way by motorcoach to get to the landing sites. Our local guide for the day was excellent. She was full of so much information and really brought World War II history to life on the bus ride.

We felt like we got to see many different World War II monuments, from machinery remnants to museums to the beaches themselves.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Visiting the Normandy American Cemetery

Visiting the cemetery was especially moving – the American Cemetery spans 172 acres and contains 9,380 burials. It’s sobering to see the rows of white gravestones. If you wish to visit a particular grave, look up the plot online so the museum staff can help you locate it during the short visit.

Viking organized a small appreciation ceremony for past veterans, of whom there were many on our tour, which was touching. We had time to walk down to the on site museum as well, which chronicles Operation Overlord in detail.

While the Normandy beaches wasn’t the original reason we chose this itinerary, they ended up being the most memorable day of the trip. I spent the next couple days reading everything available on Wikipedia about Operation Overlord, World War II and Eisenhower.

If you wish to learn more, here are some movies and reference articles:

  • Movies: Dunkirk ,  Saving Private Ryan , Band of Brothers
  • Articles:  Arromanches ,  Mulberry Harbour , Operation Overlord , Normandy Landings
  • Major figures : Dwight Eisenhower , Erwin Rommel

Visiting Normandy – Travel Checklist

We took a red eye to Paris from JFK, then sailed on the Seine to Rouen on a river cruise . You can check for  flight deals here   and set an alert for your dates.

It’s also easy to take the train from Paris to cities throughout Normandy. Check my post here for more logistical information on taking the train in France and how not  to buy tickets.

In Normandy, there’s so much to see over a large area that I’d recommend basing yourself in a city for a couple nights to take day trips, then moving to another city. For the D Day beaches, Bayeux and Caen are both popular bases. Check here for deals on Normandy hotels .

Lastly, be sure to visit Paris with  travel insurance . Whether you get injured and need to be hospitalized, your phone gets stolen, or a flight delay leaves you with nothing but the clothes on your back, travel insurance will help when you need it most.

During our recent trip, riots in Paris shut down the city center and forced a closure of all the main sights (the Louvre, Versailles, etc). Get a quote for your trip here .

I enjoyed reading this article and thought it was useful. I have never heard of Rouen, France and think I might add it to my itinerary now! The river cruise sounds nice as well. Thanks for the tips! I will be traveling to Paris in Sept.

Question. Do you know of a One Way cruise from Paris to Normandy? We’d like that and then spend about 5 days in Normandy to really explore around there. Any suggestions? And your site is lovely.

Hi Gayle, Hm no I don’t know of any but that sounds like a really nice itinerary!

Hi We would like to go to Normandy for the 80th anniversary June 6 2024. Could you help with hotels and flights. Thanks Sharon Flynt

Hi Sharon, sorry im not a travel agent!

We are going on this cruise, does it give you enough time in Paris to see the highlights?

Hi Abe – there was a guided day tour of the city included, but you can also extend your stay before or after, since there’s a lot to see + do in Paris!

The Best River Cruises In All Of Europe, According To Reviews

T ravelers looking to experience a destination usually keep away from ocean cruises, as these massive ships holding thousands of people make it difficult to see the best of a place, so most of what they see is the cruise's deck and buffet line. That's fine for relaxation, but not so great for true exploring. However, that's not the same for river cruises. River cruises offer the best parts of ocean cruises — like easy boarding, inclusive experiences, a crowd of people eager to meet others, and great food — combined with the benefits of a travel-ambitious trip. If you aren't sure  which type of cruise is best for you , it might be time to give the river a chance.

River cruises offer an array of excursions to choose from, so tourgoers can create their own customized trip. As the ship sails, you'll have the opportunity to experience small villages that otherwise wouldn't make it to your itinerary. That's what intrepid adventurers will find on these European adventures, which are undoubtedly some of the best river cruises in the world . Although the river cruise marketplace is a big one, these cruises offer interesting itineraries with one-of-a-kind experiences, excellent value, and high-end accommodations. Let's get started.

AmaWaterway - Taste Of Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a beautiful epicenter of food, wine, and gastronomic excellence, and that's exactly what cruisers will see — and taste — if they embark on AmaWaterways' seven-day Taste of Bordeaux cruise that travels both the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The trip heads through Bordeaux, Libourne, Blaye, Bourg, Cadillac, and Cussac Fort Médoc, and other cities (such as San Sebastián and Bilbao in neighboring Spain) can also be added. On the journey, travelers can expect to hike a vineyard in Libourne, take a tour of a 17th-century citadel recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit a medieval castle that looks largely untouched despite its long history, and, of course, taste plenty of Bordeaux wine. Perhaps the best part of this cruise is its ability to customize, as travelers can choose which excursion they would like to do nearly every day.

The Taste of Bordeaux cruise, which starts at $3,700, earned 4.5 stars on Cruise Critic . One previous customer said, "The only way to describe it is 'marvelous.' The itinerary is filled with great moments. The chateaus, the wine tastings, the scenery." Visitors see the Bordeaux region from the AmaDolce ship, which is specifically tailored to the Taste of Bordeaux cruise with its red-colored lounge as a nod to red wine, a cozy, wood bar perfect for enjoying a glass after a long day, and a chef's table restaurant ideal for bringing French flavors to life.

APT - Magnificent Europe

There's no more efficient way to see the best that this European region has to offer than to take APT's Magnificent Europe cruise, which ventures to 14 destinations along the Rhine and Danube rivers. On this trip, you'll venture to world-famous locales such as Amsterdam, Salzburg, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, and many more. The 15-day trip can even be extended further to Prague, making for a total of 19 cities and six countries. No matter which you choose, European charm and excitement await, as most of these cities offer a selection of several excursions such as a gondola ride in Rüdesheim, a visit to Namedy Castle in Andernach, an exploration of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, and a tour of Budapest's many iconic sights, making this cruise the perfect way to admire the beauty of Hungarian capital .

APT has secured several exclusive experiences that only river cruise guests get to enjoy, such as a special "Sound of Music" performance in Salzburg and a private classical concert in Vienna. With all that it has to offer, the trip netted 4.8 stars on Global Journeys , with reviews from nearly 60 customers. "So many wonderful things about this cruise," said one tourgoer. "Some fantastic sights that you stop and see along the way. Highly recommend this to anyone young or old."

A-Rosa Cruises - Seine Culinary Highlights

If you're a wine and food connoisseur, then there's no better way to taste and drink your way along the Seine River than with A-Rosa Cruises' Seine Culinary Highlights tour, an eight-day cruise that starts at 2,047 euros ($2,234) and ventures to Paris, Vernon, Rouen, Les Andelys, and Caudebec-en-Caux. Foodies will enjoy two wine tastings prepared by French winemakers, a cheese and oyster tasting paired with wines, a cider tasting, and more. Don't worry; you'll still get to explore the must-see sights of the area when you're not sitting down with a glass.

Tourists can add on excursions of their choice for additional costs, such as a visit to Claude Monet's Giverny home, an evening at a Parisian cabaret in Paradis Latin (which has a stage designed by the same man who designed the Eiffel Tower), an exploration of the City of Light's famed art district Montmartre, and a bike ride through Normandy. No matter which excursions or packages you choose, you'll always have free access to e-bikes, Wi-Fi, the ship's sauna and gym, room service, and drinks and meal buffets. On TourRadar, the cruise earned 4.1 stars through more than 60 reviews.

Avalon Waterways - Active & Discovery On The Rhône

Travelers can enjoy one-of-a-kind activities like a tour of public and private terraces of Lyon for amazing panoramic views, a wine tasting inside a cave in the Gorges de l'Ardèche, a demonstration on how essential oils are made inside a Provençal farmhouse, and a class on how to paint in the style of Vincent van Gogh. They can also choose from several excursions each day, creating an individually tailored itinerary for each guest.

The activities will take place in an intimately-sized group, as the ship — the Avalon Poetry II — has just 52 suites and 12 staterooms. Visitors can choose from luxury 200-square-foot suites with panoramic views, floor-to-ceiling windows, and delightful balconies, so you can breathe in the Rhône River air whenever you desire. One previous traveler shared that the Avalon Waterways' Active & Discovery on the Rhône cruise was the best river cruise she had ever done, writing on Solo Traveler that "The trip was well paced with excursions that were included in the price of the cruise every morning. I was impressed with the values demonstrated by Avalon Waterways and staff."

In these famous cities, patrons will enjoy activities like admiring Frederick the Great's former home and garden at Sanssouci Palace, exploring a German amusement park devoted to car innovation, touring Lüneburg, which looks much as it did in medieval times with its classic brick buildings, and taking a guided tour of Hamburg's market, stock exchange, and historic center. "A wonderful tour where the staff did all they could to make our experience memorable," said one tourgoer. "The food was amazing and the journey along the Rhine at Christmas something we shall never forget."

The trip received 4.2 stars on Travelstride , and a traveler who took the cruise during the pandemic took to Tripadvisor to say that "Their local guides were very informative and highly personable."

Uniworld River Cruises - Enchanting Danube

The modern nations of Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia don't just comprise part of Central Europe — they also mark the center of important international history, all culminating around the Danube River. On Uniworld River Cruises' Enchanting Danube cruise, cruisers will learn this history from a front-seat view and receive local insight and unprecedented access, as the trip offers exclusive experiences like a private viewing of the Kunstkammer Vienna museum artworks. That's likely part of the reason that the cruise has garnered acclaim from reviewers on sites such as TourRadar , on which the cruise earned 4.7 stars. "An amazing holiday," said one reviewer, "Organization, staff, food and excursions were all wonderful and we will definitely book another cruise with Uniworld."

The Enchanting Danube cruise, which starts at $3,000 and lasts eight days with an option to extend one more day to Prague, heads to Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, Melk, Linz, and Passau. Viking River Cruises - Portugal's River Of Gold

Portugal is a mix of the old and the new, thanks to its happening restaurants and innovative art galleries that combine seamlessly with historic sites, traditional recipes, and unbeatable winemaking methods. On Viking River Cruises' 10-day Portugal's River of Gold cruise, which travels along the Douro River and also stops in Spain, patrons will see this Portuguese and Spanish culture in action from the view of a "baby longship." These ships are smaller than Viking's other ships because of Portuguese rules, but visitors can still enjoy features like Scandinavian-style décor and floor-to-ceiling views of the Douro River. The cruise garnered 4.4 stars on Cruise Critic with customers saying things like, "The only thing bad I can say was that it ended too soon." The cruise line is also one of the best for a romantic couples getaway, according to reviews .

The $4,000 cruise takes patrons through Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal; Porto, the birthplace of Port wine and a spiritual epicenter; Pinhâo, a laid-back Portuguese village; Barca d'Alva, a river town near the Spanish border; and Salamanca, a Spanish city over the border that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout the cruise's stops, visitors will head to Mateus Palace for a wine tasting, learn how Port wine is made, check out a medieval fortress, explore a sacred town and admire a Baroque-style chapel, and experience the "Golden Age of Discovery" at structures like the Jerónimos Monastery.

Methodology

With stunning rivers such as the Rhône, Seine, Danube, Douro, Elbe, and more, the European river cruise scene is a vast one, with countless companies and ships to choose from. We explored the market to determine the best of the best based on customer reviews (all of these cruises have more than 4 stars on river cruise review websites), itineraries (all offer busy itineraries with tons of options to suit any traveler), value, and luxury, as these all showcase high-end experiences to make your vacation memorable. Websites like Tripadvisor, Cruise Critic, TourRadar and more were used for further confirmation of quality.

6 Regions Around the World Best Seen on a River Cruise

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

River cruising has experienced phenomenal growth over the past two decades in part because it’s a more convenient alternative to land-based bus tours. Your home-away-from-home moves with you over the course of a week or longer, meaning you unpack only once while exploring a variety of exciting cities and enchanting small towns. You’ll also enjoy superb onboard cuisine and get to know your fellow cruisers. Of course, this is only possible where rivers flow and cruise lines sail, so here’s a look at six regions around the world best seen on a river cruise.

Cambodia & Vietnam

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Flowing for almost 3,000 miles through Southeast Asia, the mighty Mekong is a living mosaic of century-spanning sights, from lavish palaces and UNESCO World Heritage Site temples to ramshackle villages and surreally green rice paddies. Most Mekong River cruises sail between Siem Reap, Cambodia, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August to April, since low river levels and hot weather make May to July difficult for travel.

Highlights of these cruises, which range from seven to 13 nights, include the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, with its Silver Pagoda and sobering genocide museum detailing the “Killing Fields” era of the 1970s Pol Pot regime. Cambodia’s more mystical destination is Angkor Wat, the superbly carved stone temple complex outside of Siem Reap built as early as the 9th century.

In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest city, sometimes still referred to as Saigon, is a mix of French-colonial architecture, Parisian-style boulevards, stunning pagodas, and modern skyscrapers. Smaller villages along the Mekong’s Vietnamese side offer a look at the daily life of farmers, fishermen, and handicraft makers, complete with floating markets and rickshaws.

The allure of cruising the Nile River to see the temples of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, and Abu Simbel in southern Egypt is undeniable. Add on a few nights in Cairo to visit the Pyramids of Giza and the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum before or after your seven-night cruise and it’s a truly bucket-list trip for anyone fascinated by ancient history.

There are just a handful of primary ports on most Nile River cruises. After arriving in Cairo, you’ll fly to Luxor to board your ship, which will be notably smaller than those sailing the major rivers of Europe. From Luxor, you’ll visit the riverfront temples of Karnak and Luxor and delve into the lore of King Tut and Queen Hatshepsut. More ancient treasures wait in Edfu and Qena. In Aswan, Egypt’s southernmost city, you’ll gaze out on mesmerizing desert landscapes that frame lush mid-river islands, visit the two-mile-wide Aswan High Dam, or enjoy an Abu Simbal excursion to see the two massive rock-cut temples.

Cruising the Amazon River is an altogether unique experience, more wildlife safari and rainforest immersion than history lesson. While small luxury cruise ships can explore the river’s larger sections from the Atlantic Ocean to Manaus, Brazil, it’s the Peruvian Amazon that takes center stage for luxury river cruises lasting three, four, or seven nights. Here, on meandering tributaries, these vessels, typically accommodating no more than 30 to 40 guests, get into the heart of the Amazon from the city of Iquitos.

Each day is an adventure as you explore with a guide in a motorized skiff. You’ll spy on monkeys and sloths in the treetops and watch pink-hued river dolphins swim through the greenish-brown water. Hiking along verdant trails, you’ll spot tiny poisonous tree frogs and later enjoy a Champagne toast amid a picturesque quilt of water lilies at sunset. You may also fish for carnivorous piranha by day and search for giant anacondas after dark.

The Mississippi

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

If cruising closer to home appeals, it doesn’t get any closer than this. The Mississippi River , which winds its way for 2,340 miles through 10 states, from Louisiana in the south to Minnesota in the north, is a terrific option that will immerse you in the history, music, food, and architecture of America’s Heartland.

Some vessels are sleek river ships while others are retro-inspired paddle wheelers. If you have 15 days, you can cruise the river’s entire length, from New Orleans to St. Paul (or vice versa). You can also opt for a Lower Mississippi or Upper Mississippi sailing that lasts seven to nine days. With the former, you can do a New Orleans roundtrip and visit historic cities in Mississippi and Louisiana that include Natchez, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, and St. Francisville, or add on Memphis, Tennessee, with a one-way itinerary to or from New Orleans. On an Upper Mississippi sailing, you’ll start in either St. Louis or St. Paul and visit riverfront cities such as Hannibal, Missouri; Davenport, Iowa; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Red Wing, Minnesota. Which section you choose will dictate when you go, since Upper Mississippi and Full Mississippi sailings are only offered from June to October while Lower Mississippi itineraries are year-round.

Central Europe

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

No other region is home to as many navigable rivers and must-see historic cities, from Amsterdam, Antwerp, Vienna, and Cologne in the north to Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, and Porto in the west. In Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Portugal rivers connect these vibrant cities with dozens of smaller towns featuring landmark castles, lavish cathedrals, and charming old towns.

Central Europe’s top rivers include the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro, and Danube. Dozens of cruise itineraries along these waterways immerse you in history, culinary traditions, wine-making, art, architecture, and natural beauty. Picture a living mosaic of tulips in April along the waterways of Belgium and Holland or gliding past the terraced vineyards of Portugal’s Douro Valley during the grape harvest in September. Mix history and art as you explore rogue papacies, Roman amphitheaters, and French wine along the Rhone in the South of France or tour the palaces and cathedrals of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the Danube.

What can you expect on each river? Here’s an intro:

The  Danube , which flows through 10 countries from southern Germany to the Black Sea, is ideal for anyone with an interest in history, art, and architecture. On an Upper Danube itinerary, you’ll  visit capital cities  Budapest, Vienna, and Bratislava (Slovakia), as well as smaller Austrian cities and towns like Linz, Durnstein, and Melk. Day trips to lofty Salzburg or the picturesque Czech town of Cesky Krumlov are also possible. Most cruises begin or end in the Bavaria region of Germany, so a stay in Munich can cap off the trip.

The  Rhine , which begins in the Swiss Alps and runs to the North Sea near Rotterdam, offers views of storybook castles and vineyards set against a backdrop that is among the most stunning in river cruising. Cities on a Rhine itinerary can include Basel, Switzerland; Strasbourg, France; Cologne, Germany; and Amsterdam. In between are wine-making hamlets such as Rüdesheim am Rhein and Bamberg in Germany, plus scenic Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, home to centuries-old windmills.

The  Rhone , which meanders from food-centric Lyon all the way to the Mediterranean in the South of France, is chock full of delights. These include the Roman arena and medieval streets of Arles (also famous as the setting for some of Vincent Van Gogh’s most notable paintings), the papal intrigue of Avignon, the wine-making excellence around Tournon-sur-Rhône, and the truffle treasures of Viviers.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

The  Seine , which flows north through Paris to the English Channel, is equally intriguing, especially to history buffs and art lovers. On these cruises, you can explore the museums and landmarks of the French capital, wander Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny, and see buildings and landscapes painted by Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise (where he’s also buried). You can also walk the medieval streets of Rouen, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake and Monet painted the Gothic cathedral, before visiting Honfleur, a seaside hamlet favored by Impressionists, as well as the D-Day beaches of Normandy and the American Cemetery, resting place of 9,387 fallen soldiers.

The  Dordogne and Garonne rivers , located in the Bordeaux wine-making region of France, offer a heady immersion for oenophiles — from the historic bustle of the city of Bordeaux to the bucolic ambiance of wine-making hamlets such as St.-Emilion, Pauillac, and Cadillac.

The  Douro River  in northern Portugal is another mecca for  wine lovers . Riverboats cruise from atmospheric Porto, home to historic port wine cellars, to small towns such as Pinhão and Régua, set amid pastoral hillside vineyards.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Central Europe also has two lesser-known rivers. The  Elbe River  flows through the former East Germany and offers access to Berlin, Potsdam, and Dresden, as well as nearby Prague in the Czech Republic. The waterways of  Holland and Belgium  attract garden lovers each spring with millions of tulips, historic windmills, and the chocolate and beer abundant in Belgian cities like Brussels, Antwerp, and Bruges.

Eastern Europe

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

While exploring Central Europe is more popular, Eastern Europe has plenty to offer in the way of lesser-known but history-rich countries like Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. The Danube River passes through all six and Lower Danube itineraries generally begin in Budapest, Hungary, and end in Bucharest, Romania (or vice versa).

Here’s what you’ll see along the way:

In Hungary, the contrast between the stately architecture of Budapest and the port of Kalocsa couldn’t be greater. Known for paprika production and embroidered handicrafts, this city and its surrounding countryside are also the place to experience cowboy culture (the energetic but touristy Puszta Horse Show is a popular excursion) and the Hajós-Baja wine region (Hungarian wines are quite good, so wine-tasting is a commendable option).

Croatia, which most people know for its historic ports on the Adriatic coast, also has a port on the Danube. Vukovar is the gateway to Osijek, located about 45 minutes away. Both cities were heavily damaged during the Balkan wars of the 1990s, but many buildings in Osijek’s historic Baroque center were spared or have been restored. Here you can visit the Church of St. Peter and Paul with its 295-foot steeple and pedestrian-only Holy Trinity Square in the Old Town known as Tvrda.

viking river cruise from paris to normandy

Belgrade, the former capital of Yugoslavia and current capital of Serbia, is one of Europe’s oldest cities. Its architecture ranges from charming 17th-century buildings set on the cobblestone streets of Old Town (a short stroll from the port) to dour Communist block structures. Don’t miss the Belgrade Fortress (it was destroyed 40 times, and what remains is mainly from the Ottoman period), the Nikola Tesla Museum, and the massive Church of Saint Sava with its lavish gilded crypt.

Bulgaria may offer up the most surprises. One of the region’s least wealthy countries, it is full of scenic beauty and unique sights. River ships call on Vidin, home to Fortress Bab Vida, for excursions to the striking, red-hued Belogradchick Rocks. You’ll also call on Ruse for an all-day scenic excursion to Veliko Tarnovo, a medieval town and fortress built into the cliffs of the Yantra River. Back on the Danube, you’ll marvel at the Iron Gates, a series of gorges that are one of Europe’s natural wonders, as you cruise through them.

You’ll board or disembark your cruise about an hour outside of the Romanian capital. Bucharest is a city of contrasts, known as the “Paris of the East” for its stately boulevards (it even has an Arc de Triomphe). It's also home to the massive Palace of the Parliament, built by notorious mid-20th-century dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Many cruisers also add on pre- or post-cruise tour to the historic towns and castles of nearby Transylvania.
