• EEA Family Permit / EU Settlement Scheme family permit - if your spouse is living and working in the UK and is an EU national but does not have UK citizenship.
• Unmarried partners visa - if you are not married officially to a UK national but have lived together for two years.
• Same-sex partners visa - If you are same-sex partners, have already registered your marriage to a UK national or for unmarried partners, if you have lived together for two years.
• Dependant child visa (or Settlement Child visa) - if you want to bring your dependant child to the UK.
• General work visa (Tier 2) can be applied for if the applicant has been offered a skilled job in the UK.
• Temporary Worker visa (Tier 5) - includes Charity Worker visa, Creative and Sporting visa, Government Authorised Exchange visa, International Agreement visa, Religious Worker visa, Seasonal Worker visa, Youth Mobility Scheme visa.

Relocation of the UK Visa Application Center in Cochin

The UK Visa Application Center in Kochi has moved to a new address. With effect from April 24, 2023, a new Visa Application Center opened solely for people applying for UK and Ireland visas in order to improve the customer experience and meet growing customer demand.

The exclusive news was officially announced by VFS Global, formerly known as "Visa Facilitation Services Global," a company that provides outsourcing and technology services for international diplomatic missions and governments.

From April 24, 2023, no services will be offered at the previous address. The address of the new UK and Ireland visa application center is provided here: First Floor, Coastal Chambers, M.G. Road, Ravipuram, Kochi, 682015, India.

Short Term visit visa

Anyone can visit the UK on a holiday trip or for meeting their friends or family with the UK visit visa. The UK visit visa is also known as the standard visitor visa. The cost of the visa is 115 GBP (approx.) or Rs 12,000 (approx.) for an Indian passport holder and the duration of stay in the UK would be for a maximum of 6 months.

Long term visit visa

If there is a need to visit the UK for a longer period, an application for the Long-term Standard Visitor visa can be initiated. The duration of this long term visit visa varies from 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years. 

Note: There is no legal requirement to have a return ticket to enter the UK, but you may have to demonstrate that you have the means and intentions to leave the UK at the conclusion of your trip. You could, however, encounter difficulties if you don't have a return ticket.

Documents required for a UK Visit or Tourist Visa Application

UK tourist visa application form VAF1A  to be completed online.

Valid passport with at least one blank page and it must be valid for three more months beyond the date you plan to leave the UK after your trip.

Proof of Finance: Evidence of financial means sufficient to cover living expenses while in the United Kingdom. This might be your last six months' bank statements or payslips. Particulars regarding your hotel in the United Kingdom. You will be required to submit a document indicating your intended stay in the UK. Take note that you are not need to pay in full for a hotel/hostel in the United Kingdom prior to obtaining the visa. Additionally, this could be:​​

ID information and living address of a person covering your travel costs.

ID information and passport number of any relative living here.

​ Complete travel itinerary: It has to contain dates of your onward and backward travel. Submit a travel plan that gives all the information regarding how and what you are planning to do in the UK. Include the travel dates, places you will visit, meeting agenda, booked tour, festival agenda, etc.

Previous travel history:  This has to cover the period of the last 10 years. It can be proven through visas and entry/exit border stamps in current and older passports, or through separate residence titles.

Specifics about your living address in the home country. Also, you’ve to show how long you’ve been living there.

Biometric information:  If you are applying for a visa that lets you stay in UK for more than 6 months, you will need to submit your biometric information. This includes giving your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken at the appropriate application centre.

Letter of Invitation:  To apply for a UK visa, the applicant must present an invitation letter. A letter of invitation for a UK visa is a letter written by a British citizen or legal resident to a foreigner with whom they have family or friendship extending an invitation to stay at their home. Additionally, it confirms that they have enough room for the guest for the duration of their stay in the United Kingdom. This letter usually referred to as a sponsorship letter for a UK visa, can be written in a different format. The letter can be addressed to the UK consular official, stating their willingness to welcome an international guest with whom they have family or friendship ties, as well as certifying that they have enough room for the visitor during their full stay in the UK. Both variants are valid.

Paid UK visa fees.  You must present the receipt confirming that you have paid the visa fee in the proper amount.

And you better have your visa process underway because there's a spike in the number of visa applications this summer. The British High Commission says about 80,000 Indians are headed to the UK this summer for the World Cup. Here's a bunch of ways you can beat the queue or just apply for your UK visa at your comfort and convenience:

Don't cart your documents to the visa centre

You no longer need to carry that big bulk of papers to the visa office. The self-upload option lets you upload all documents prior to the visa appointment and walk in with just your passport. The service is free; if you need help with uploading documents, you can use VFS Global's Document Scanning Assistance for Rs750

Get your UK visa on priority (or super priority)

Typically, a UK visa takes up to 15 days to process. But if you're in a hurry (or just late to the party, apply for a Priority Visa, which costs approx. Rs21,000 and is processed within 5 days of you submitting your biometrics. Want it even sooner? The Super Priority Visa takes just one working day and costs approx. Rs90,000. Both facilities are available at VFS centres in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai North, Mumbai South, New Delhi and Pune. The Priority Visa service is also available at centres in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kochi, Jalandhar, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad.

Keep your passport while they process your UK visa

If your itinerary involves multiple visas (or if you're about to make a short trip) while your visa is in process, pay Rs5,000 to keep your visa with you. You'll need to submit a copy of your entire passport while you apply, and then submit the original only for stamping once they've approved your request. This service is available in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai North, Mumbai South, New Delhi and Pune.

Get your UK visa at your doorstep

Ideal for those who are travelling in a group, or for those who can't make the time to step out of work or home for the application process. All your formalities for the UK visa—from biometrics to submission of documents—will take place at the location of your choice: home, office, school or campus—wherever. The service is available across the country, and fees vary based on location and the number of applicants.

Are the timings not working out? Pick your own

If you need to travel urgently, or have missed your pre-booked appointment, or simply cannot book an appointment at your preferred date and time, Prime Time Appointment service allows you to book an appointment outside of normal working hours. This service is available in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad. Timings vary. For example, at the North Mumbai application centre, you can apply from 7am–8am (Mon-Fri) and then from 5pm-11pm. On Saturday, Prime Time is from 9am-3pm. NEW DELHI June 30: From 6 July UK Visas and Immigration is beginning a phased resumption of services and the following Visa Application Centres in India will be open from the same date, VFS Global website said.

VFS strongly advise all customers to purchase Courier Return of their documents, so they do not have to visit the Visa Application Centre again, after a decision is made.

If a decision has been made on your application, and you need to collect your passport from the Visa Application Centre, VFS will be contacting you to arrange this.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK Government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in India set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the  High Commission of India in London or another Indian consulate in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering India.

Passport validity requirements

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into India.

Your passport must also: - have 2 blank pages for your visa

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

Apply for the right type of visa for the purpose of your travel.

You need a visa to travel to India unless you are an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.

India has a number of visa categories. Make sure you get the right visa for the purpose and duration of your travel.

Penalties for having the wrong visa can include refusal of entry or deportation. This may also include not being allowed to enter India in the future.

Applying for a visa or e-visa

Find out how to apply for a visa from the Indian Bureau of Immigration Depending on your requirements you may be able to apply for:

• regular (paper) visa
• e-visa (make sure to check the website’s ‘FAQs’ for restrictions on airports and seaports of entry)

Check your eligibility and any restrictions before you apply and allow plenty of time for your application to be processed.

Applicants of Pakistani origin

If you are of Pakistani origin, a British-Pakistan dual national, or holding a National Identity Card for overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), the visa processing time will be substantially longer than other visa applications. More information is available from the High Commission of India in London .

If you are a British-Pakistan dual national, you must apply for an Indian visa on your Pakistani passport. If you have renounced your Pakistani nationality or cancelled your Pakistani passport, you will need to submit documentary proof of this.

Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders

If you hold a valid Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card, you can use this, along with your valid British passport to visit India. You do not need a visa. If you have a Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card, you will need to convert it to an OCI card. Arrival, registration, and extensions

If you plan to stay in India for more than 180 days and do not hold an OCI card, register within 14 days of arrival with the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) . You could be denied permission to leave if you do not do this. Check if you are required to register your arrival on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website and FRRO .

Overstaying in India on a visa is an offence. Make sure you leave the country before your visa expires or get an official extension if needed. More information is available on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website.

If you’re hospitalised

If you or someone you’re travelling with has a short-term Tourist Visa and is hospitalised, you may be able to extend or ‘convert’ to a Medical Visa .

Exit requirements

You will pass through immigration as you depart India. Officials will check when you entered the country. If you do not have an entry stamp, for example if you have a newly issued passport, you will need to apply for special exit visa before you travel. This must be done online and can take between five and fifteen working days for straightforward applications. Factor this into your timeframe to leave India when you are booking flights. For further information see the  e-FRRO online portal (part of the Indian Foreigners Registration Office).

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and vaccination certificates you may need on TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre).

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

• yellow fever

The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also provides  vaccination guidance and data .

Accommodation

By law, hotels, hostels and other accommodation providers must register the stay of foreign guests with the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO) using a “C Form”.  Please ask your accommodation provider to ensure they have done so.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of India . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Satellite phones and listening devices

It is illegal to possess and operate satellite phones in India without a licence. British nationals have been arrested for bringing them into the country without prior permission. You can contact the Indian Department of Telecommunication to request a licence .

You may also need prior permission from the Indian authorities to bring equipment like listening or recording devices, radio transmitters, powerful cameras, or binoculars into India. You can ask the High Commission of India in London for advice.

Taking money into India

There are restrictions on bringing Indian rupees into India. Visitors, including residents and tourists, should follow Reserve Bank of India guidelines .

If you’re visiting India, you can bring cash, travellers’ cheques (in pounds sterling or another foreign currency) or a bank card with you and exchange or withdraw rupees once in India.

You must declare any amount above 5,000 US dollars in notes, or 10,000 US dollars in notes and travellers’ cheques combined.
