UK SUBS: THE FINAL TOUR

And so the time has come… After a touring career that has spanned 45 years, the U.K. Subs have decided to quit the road and embark on just one more final farewell tour in September 2023. Thereafter, they will confine themselves to festival appearances or an infrequent date or two as, moving forward into the future, each member instead focuses on solo projects and other activities. The Subs have a popular and deserved reputation for being one of the hardest working Punk outfits in the world. Year-in, year-out since 1977, they have built a solid global following via constant lengthy visits to play their brand of Old School Punk rock in the North and South Americas, continental Europe, Japan and, of course, the British Isles. September’s UK tour will be the culmination of all those years of travel, of going from continent to continent, nation to nation, city to city, stage to stage – the last touring will and testament of the legendary U.K. Subs.

London’s iconic 100 Club has been trading under the same name since 1964 and has put on live music since 1942 as the Feldman Jazz Club amongst other names, earning it the title of the oldest independent venue world wide.

2022 marked the U.K. Subs’ 45th anniversary; this legendary punk band continues to represent the true spirit of punk rock. Inspired by the Damned at the birth of British Punk, the now equally legendary Charlie Harper formed the Subs out of his then R&B outfit The Marauders, circa summer 1977.

Starting out as The Subversives, the name was shortened to The Subs and then changed to U.K. Subs, whilst early line-ups merged their high-speed R&B sound into punk.

October 1977 saw Charlie joined by Nicky Garratt on guitar, and it was the Harper/Garratt song writing partnership that would go on to collaborate on the band's most successful record releases. Through 1977 and 1978 the band played shows all over London including the infamous Roxy punk club, building up a fiercely loyal and sizeable following. Their first ‘recorded’ output was on the ‘Farewell To The Roxy’ LP.

Led by the indefatigable 72 years young Charlie Harper - now venerated as the godfather of UK punk - the band has continued to improve through various line-ups and record companies. Still touring worldwide, they maintain that true spirit of punk rock continuing to inspire each subsequent generation of fans. There has never been any division of fan and band with the Subs, and Charlie’s unrelenting love of his audience and music shines through. This is something that galvanized listeners of Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6music show to vote them as the most respected of Punk ‘icons’, to win the 2010 Punk World Cup. With a fabulous line up in place of Charlie, Steve Straughan on guitar, Alvin Gibbs on bass and Dave Humphries on drums, the U.K. Subs continue to entertain, enlighten and enthuse with blistering recordings as well as their ever-popular enthralling live shows.

Like a vintage wine – the U.K. Subs just get better and better.

There’s not many bands that have the respect of everyone on the punk scene. But Charlie Harper’ UK SUBS is that exception.

Formed in 1976, the mainstay of the band has been vocalist Charlie Harper – originally a singer in Britain’s R&B scene (now venerated as the godfather of UK punk) – the band has continued and thrived. 2010 marked the fifth decade in which the UK Subs had continually graced the punk rock scene, widely recognised as one of the most consistently and visibly successful punk bands – they maintain and pioneer the true spirit of punk rock, without the compromise and watering-down that has affected so many of their contemporaries.

One of the most important bands of the second wave of U.K. punk, the U.K. Subs had been on the scene since the early days of British punk. But as the first wave of bands began to crumble, the U.K. Subs just got tougher and faster, and slowly rose to fame as many of their peers were burning out, finally breaking out in 1979. The group's signature sound was stripped-down and anthemic British punk tunes, not unlike the early Clash but with less gingerbread and a heavier attack, coupled with ranting vocals that merged anger with dark humor. U.K. Subs may have grown faster and leaner with the passage of time, and a heavy metal influence edged into their music in the '90s, but for folks who wanted their punk rock simple, forceful, and full of shout-along choruses, the band reliably delivered throughout a long and eventful career. If anything has been the U.K. Subs' trademark, it's longevity; vocalist and founder Charlie Harper has kept the group alive for over 40 years, and while more than 75 other people have gone in and out of the lineup over the years, he's kept the beery rabble-rousing spirit of the U.K. Subs alive and well on the road and in the studio. Harper founded the U.K. Subs in 1976. He had previously been the lead singer with an R&B act called the Marauders (and held down a day job as a hair stylist), but after catching a show by the Damned, Harper decided punk rock was the future, and he formed a group called the Subversives. Harper teamed up with guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Steve Slack, and drummer Pete Davies to complete the first edition of the group, whose name was soon pared down to U.K. Subs. The band began making the rounds of the London club circuit, and earned the seal of approval from influential BBC disc jockey John Peel, who recorded two radio sessions with the band, one in 1977 and another in 1978. Despite their growing notoriety, it wasn't until 1979 that the group finally scored a record deal, with GEM Records signing the band and releasing their first studio album, Another Kind of Blues. As many acts on the U.K. punk and new wave scene were either breaking up (the Sex Pistols, X-Ray Spex, Generation X) or going through creative transitions (the Clash, the Damned, Wire), the U.K. Subs proved there was still a lively audience for no-frills punk rock, and Another Kind of Blues became a surprise hit, rising to number 21 on the British charts. The group's second album, 1980's Brand New Age, fared even better, peaking at number 18, and a live set recorded at the Roxy in London in 1977 received a belated release from Stiff Records (without the band's input) as Live Kicks. The band responded by delivering an album drawn from more recorded live shows, 1980's Crash Course, which took the band to the Top Ten of the U.K. LP charts, making it to number eight. Their live attack was also documented in a short documentary by filmmaker Julien Temple, Punk Can Take It! The hard-working Subs introduced a third studio effort, Diminished Responsibility, in 1981, which became another chart success, reaching number 18 on the British listings. By 1980, the band experienced its first major lineup change, when Davies fell ill and was replaced for a tour by Ian Tansley, and then by Steve Roberts. Davies would return and depart the U.K. Subs numerous times over the years, as would guitarist Nicky Garratt and bassist Paul Slack (as well as Slack's initial replacement, Alvin Gibbs). In 1982, the U.K. Subs jumped from GEM to NEMS Records, and their first album for the label, Endangered Species, didn't fare as well on the charts as their previous efforts. And while many British punk acts found indifferent audiences in the United States, the U.K. Subs' most successful albums were never even released in America until many years after the fact, though they staged their first North American tour in 1980. However, none of this kept Charlie Harper down, and while the U.K. Subs' personnel would change on a regular basis from the mid-'80s onward (Lars Fredericksen of Rancid was briefly a member in the early '90s), the band continued to tour nonstop, playing in the U.K., Europe, and Japan on a regular basis, and occasionally making their way to the United States. Between studio efforts, live discs, and compilations of their back catalog, the band had literally dozens of albums to their credit when they issued 2016's Ziezo, which Harper declared would be the U.K. Subs' final studio album. However, Harper insisted that the band wasn't over despite that claim, and several months later, Friends and Relations appeared, which combined new music with rare archival material. Ziezo received a belated United States release in 2018 via Cleopatra Records. ~ Mark Deming (iTunes)

Travis Scott UK tour: Dates, how to get tickets and if there’s a pre-sale

A merican rapper Travis Scott is set to host his largest UK headline show to date this summer as part of a 14-stop continuation of his Utopia: Circus Maximus Tour across Britain and mainland Europe.

Scott is set to perform at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Manchester’s £365m Co-op Live venue in July which follows a sold-out tour of North America last year off the back of the artist’s record-breaking No 1 album UTOPIA .

The critically-acclaimed album was last year’s biggest-selling hip-hop release, pulling in 50 billion streams globally as well as the titles of most streamed album in its first week on Spotify in 2023 and most streamed album on its first day on Apple Music in 2023.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Utopia – Circus Maximus World Tour , including dates of the UK gigs and other stops and where and when to buy general and pre-sale tickets.

When is Travis Scott playing in the UK?

The first of Scott’s two newly-announced UK gigs is on Thursday 11 July at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

This is to be followed two nights later by a show at the problem-plagued Co-op Live venue in Manchester , which is scheduled for Saturday 13 July.

The Astroworld artist kicks off his European tour at the Gelre Dome in Arnhem in the Netherlands on 28 June before taking to various stages in Poland (Krakow; 2 July), Switzerland (Zurich; 4 July), France (Nice; 6 July), Austria (Vienna; 7 July) and Belgium (Antwerp; 8 July) ahead of his two stops on British soil.

He then returns to the continent to finish up the tour, performing in Romania (Constinesti; 14 July), Czechia (Prague; 18 July) and Italy (Milan; 23 July) in between stops in the German cities of Hamburg (16 July), Cologne (20 July) and Frankfurt (27 July).

The news of the new tour comes as the start of the first civil trial stemming from Scott’s 2021 Astroworld festival in Houston – at which 10 people were killed in a crowd surge – has been delayed .

Jury selection had previously been set to begin Tuesday 7 May in the wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of Madison Dubiski, a 23-year-old Houston resident who was killed during the crowd crush at Scott’s November 2021 concert.

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets go on general sale from 10am on Friday 10 May.

Links to purchase them for each of the tour’s 12 new stops can be found at travisscott.com .

One euro or pound from every ticket sold will reportedly go to Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation , a 501(c)3 (non-profit organisation) with a mission to uplift the youth from Houston (the capital of Scott’s home state, Texas) through toy drives, scholarship programmes to students at historically black colleges and universities and fulfilling expenses for education and creative endeavours.

Is there a pre-sale?

You can register in advance for early access – pre-sale – tickets to both UK concerts.

Meanwhile, a press release from Tottenham Hotspur says that Spurs season ticket holders and One Hotspur Members “will be given priority access to tickets” for the London show “with an exclusive pre-sale”.

Pre-sale tickets are set to go live at 10am on Thursday 9 May, a day before general tickets are made available for purchase.
