Quick Review: Trek Superfly 100 29er Full Suspension MTB

While at the SE Bike Expo this past weekend, I got a chance to throw a leg over the new 2012 Trek Superfly 100.

As many of you already know, the Trek Superfly 100 is a carry over from the Gary Fisher days. Trek brought the two brands together to essentially give them a Trek branded 29er lineup. They kept the Gary Fisher name by making it a collection , but you are basically getting the same bike as before with the Trek logo. Trek owned Gary Fisher anyway, so it really made sense from a branding point of view.

For 2012, the big change to the bike was the addition of the 142mm rear end with 12mm rear thru axle. This does a lot to stiffen up the rear end and unify the rear triangle with the front main frame. We are starting to see a lot of manufacturers go to this setup over the past couple of years. While it creates yet another variable (the 142mm rear hub width vs. conventional 135mm), anything that brings more rear end stiffness to full suspension mountain bikes is a welcomed bonus.

The bike still features the Trek Active Braking Pivot a RockShox Maxle thru axle system.

The color scheme also changed for 2012 to a raw carbon look (vs. the white previously) with bright blue accents. Personally, I am liking the darker color scheme Trek is using for their lineup this year. The Fuel EX and Remedy got the same treatment. Other than that, you get the same G2 geometry that you are used to out of the 29ers from Fisher and a host of Bontrager/Shimano components to round out the build. Weights for this Elite model (MSRP $5,249) are coming in around 26 pounds.

One thing to keep in mind with current Trek bikes, their sizing is a little bit different than you might be used to. I typically ride a large in just about all brands. On a 2012 Trek, I ride a 21.5 frame because it is an actual 19.5. When you go to test ride a Trek, try the one size up than you normally ride first.

The Trek Superfly 100 is a purpose built machine in all reality. While there will be a lot of enthusiast riders who buy this bike purely because they want a light 29er, the real purpose of this bike is to go fast on XC race courses and endurance events. During these events, all of your time that is made up to hit the podium is done on climbs…not the descents. So fast race machines have to be able to climb like a bat out of hell. They don’t really care how they descend…just get me to the top and do it quickly.

The Superfly 100 is built to do exactly that…climb. When you get into slight rises or long ascents, the bike seems to just pedal forward with enough suspension to gain traction without robbing you of precious energy. The Active Braking Pivot does a great job of preventing unwanted pedal bob while hammering up the climb and the geometry of the bike keeps the front end planted down while tracking straight. Basically, everything you would want the bike to do while climbing…just works.

That is where the love affair with the Superfly 100 stops…at least for me. Those same stable characteristics that make the Superfly 100 such a great climber are it’s downfall in tight/twisty singletrack and downhill. The suspension on the Superfly (at 25% sag) is really setup just to take enough of the edge off that you don’t get super beat up on XC races. You still feel just about every single part of the trail while you ride. It is not a plush setup even when you start to let air out of the 110mm rear travel frame.

That stability you feel in the climbing is also largely in part because of a long wheelbase on this bike. That same long wheel base makes the bike hard to maneuver between tight trees and switchbacks. It is more of a sweeping turner than a pinpoint direction changer. It takes more body english and throwing your weight forward on the bike to get it to spin around.

While headed downhill, the Active Braking Pivot works as advertised by keeping the suspension active under braking forces, but the bike just isn’t comfortable with the tires leaving the ground or bombing technical descents. However, I would expect this out of a bike that is essentially built to be a mountain goat.

Overall, the bike is great for what it is built to be…a light XC race/endurance bike that will make up time where it matters the most…on the climbs and flats. It pedals incredibly well and makes you feel like you are faster than you are when you are pointed skyward. Throw a little bit of money at this Elite (ok…maybe a lot of money) and you could have a 23 lbs. racing monster that will get you to the podium.

Those same characteristics that make this bike such a great racing thoroughbred make it a hard sell for enthusiast riders in my eyes. If you want to have the latest and greatest light full suspension mountain bike frame, then you are probably looking right at this offering from Trek. However, I think there is more fun to be had on several other bikes in the industry (especially for this price) if you are looking to maximize your fun on the trail and not just be the first one to the top of the climb. It is not going to be confidence inspiring going downhill unless you already have some serious skills.

For my purposes, I would look into this frame if I was going to race endurance events. For fast XC racing, I would probably look closer at the Niner Jet 9 RDO as it’s geometry will turn faster through tight sections of trail.

The Next Big Hit: 29er Full Suspension

During the middle part of the 2009 racing season the Subaru-Gary Fisher team gave Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, a racer with a preference for hardtails, a new full-suspension bike.

To the surprise of many he raced it in some of the biggest events during the second half of this season. JHK rode Fisher’s new Superfly 100 in two world cups, the marathon national championships, which he won, and the last two stops of the Pro XTC series, of which he won the overall series.

It should be noted that JHK has raced the Superfly 100 more than any other full-suspension bike Fisher has provided him in his five years on the team, – 29-inch wheel or otherwise.

“It was one of the easiest transitions [to a new bike] I’ve ever made,” Horgan-Kobelski said at Fisher’s unveiling of new bikes last weekend in Park City, Utah.

So the Superfly 100 will likely go down as the bike to convert JHK to full suspension. It’s also the lightest full-suspension bike that Fisher has ever produced, at 2,100-grams (medium, frame, shock and hardware). And in a departure from the original Superfly hardtail, which is made overseas, the Superfly 100 is 100-percent OCLV carbon, which is made exclusively at Trek’s carbon manufacturing facility in Waterloo, Wisconsin.

Gary Fisher, the man, has been a 29-inch evangelist for many, many years, but his namesake bicycle brand has produced them for a decade. Working on the product for a decade is important, according to Fisher.

“When the first butted chromoly tubing came out, it took them about 10 years to get it so the stuff wouldn’t break – that was back in the ’20s,” Fisher said. “When the first aluminum frames came out it took them 10 years until those things stopped cracking on a regular basis. When the first suspension came out, good old RockShox, we spec’d one on our bikes in ’91 and our dealers thought we were crazy. It took about 10 years for those things to become refined enough to where everyone said, ‘it’s a no-brainer, I’m getting it.’ So it’s no coincidence: 29er – 10 years.”

Superfly 100: Fisher’s Most Advanced bike yet

Before we get back into the debate over wheel size, we should go over the specifications of Fisher’s newest top-of-the-line model. The Superfly 100 incorporates all of the highest technologies found within the Gary Fisher and Trek family. From the Fisher side comes the decade worth of refinement to 29er geometry. Highlights here include the G2 geometry and fork offset and 29er Advantage, which pertains to creating the shortest rear center measurement possible for better, more 26-inch-bike-like handling.

SUPERFLY 100 FAQ A couple of things that you may be wondering about Fisher’s new full suspension frame:

Is it compatible with SRAM’s new XX group? Yes, and the BB95 bottom bracket will accept Truvativ’s narrowest 156mm Q-factor XX crank.

Who makes direct mount front derailleurs that will fit this bike? Shimano makes a complement of direct mount front derailleurs and SRAM offers direct mount options with its XX group.

Can I use a MRP 1.X chainguide on the Superfly 100? No, MRP’s 1.X requires a threaded bottom bracket for mounting.

Trek offers the whole of its latest suspension and carbon engineering advantage to Fisher’s flagship, full-suspension project. These include the Net-Molded E2 tapered headtube, BB95 Net-Molded bottom bracket and ABP concentric rear pivot. In a first from Trek, all of the Superfly 100’s bearing seats are Net-Molded as well; there is no metal molded into this frame, save for the threads for the direct mount front derailleur. Couple all of this carbon technology with one-piece OCLV seatstays and a 44-gram carbon swing link as the finishing touch. The Superfly 100 uses these features to produce 110mm of rear wheel travel. Together, all of these technologies make for one of the most advanced cross-country, full-suspension bikes available on the market for 2010 – 29er or otherwise.

Component Picks

Continuing the impressive story surrounding the Superfly 100 is its raceable, yet relatively affordable parts selection. Top of the line cross-country suspension components come from Fox Racing Shox in the form of the brand’s 100mm F29 RLC and RP23 with Boost Valve. SRAM, Truvativ and Avid take care of the component group with a collective of the joint brands’ “Design Your Ride” Redwin components.

A smart selection of Bontrager alloy and carbon components finish the package: Race X Lite alloy wheels, stem and Race Lite Big Sweep flat handlebar are complemented by the weight savings from the Race XXX Lite carbon seatpost. Maybe more impressive than the Superfly100’s technological package or component picks is its price. While some manufacturers offer less for more, Fisher prices its flagship at an expensive, yet attainable $5,560.

While a couple of hours on any bike are hardly enough to pass any sort of judgment, my initial impression was good. It was similar to my first ride, three years ago, on Trek’s ABP suspension platform. During that launch I rode Trek’s Fuel EX 9, a 5-inch-travel bike that pedaled uphill, and on flats, like a full-on cross-country race bike. From that point I was convinced that ABP is a good system and it doesn’t disappoint on the Superfly 100.

I was able to ride the bike comfortably with the shock in the open position for just about the entire ride, save for checking out how it felt with ProPedal. Without going too much deeper, I’ll leave my impression at this: If Trek had launched this bike, with all of the same technology at a higher price, I would have been impressed. The lower-than-expected price and the fact it has 29-inch wheels did not dampen my impression at all.

The 2012 Trek Superfly Pro builds on the success of last year's Superfly Elite carbon 29er hardtail, adding an upgraded spec that lops a full pound off the build plus a thru-axle and better tires that improve its overall usability. It's speedier and more fun to ride than before but that extra performance carries with it a hefty price premium.

Ride and handling: excellent G2 geometry, stiff all around

The 2012 Superfly Pro essentially wears the same frame as last year's Elite so, not surprisingly, our list of likes and dislikes carries over, too.

Handling is once again especially sweet given Bontrager's trick G2 fork crown offset and its resultant trail, which mimics that of a 26" bike and generates a particularly light feel up front for a big-wheeler. Close confines at low speed in particular are no problem for the Superfly's nimble personality and we never once felt like we were fighting the front end in any way, even on tight uphill switchbacks.

High-speed handling is reassuringly stable for a dedicated cross-country bike, too, thanks to a smart 69.3-degree head tube angle that retains quick steering without feeling unnervingly twitchy and a low bottom bracket that keeps your center of gravity close to the ground. Coupled with the big wheels, there was generally little drama when mindlessly bombing through rock gardens but that same low bottom bracket will also produce more than a few pedal strikes if you're not mindful.

Given the bike's racing intentions, it's also no surprise that it's dutifully quick under power. Stiff carbon fibers and monstrous tube cross-sections – including Trek's ultra-wide 95mm bottom bracket shell and broadly spaced chain stays – yield a stout backbone and firm foundation for big pedaling efforts. Likewise, very good front triangle torsional rigidity keeps the bars from moving excessively when you're sprinting or climbing out of the saddle.

Add in the bike's impressive 9.66kg (21.30lb, complete, w/o pedals) weight and it's no surprise that the Superfly Pro is a perfect companion for long climbs.

Riding position is similarly race-ready with a puny 103mm-long head tube on our 17.5" tester that produced a suitably low hand position when paired with a slightly negative-rise stem and flat bar.

Though stiff, the Superfly Pro nevertheless still isn't quite as unyieldingly efficient as some other machines we've tested recently. Likewise, ride comfort falls a bit shy of the best examples in the market with a rear end that filters out high-frequency buzz but otherwise doesn't offer much vertical flex to speak of. Trek attempts to ameliorate this with the Superfly Pro's slim 27.2mm-diameter seatpost but even that effort is thwarted by the Bontrager Race X Lite ACC's aluminum core.

Despite this, overall comfort has still improved over last year's Superfly Elite. The new Bontrager 29-1 tires are generously sized at 2.2" across and suitably floaty for all-around trail duty yet still roll extremely quickly thanks to the ramped, low center knobs.

Add in the 15mm thru-axle fork dropouts and the noticeable bump in front-end stiffness relative to last year's open dropouts and the Superfly Pro is not only slightly more comfortable and a bit faster than before but also a more suitable all-around trail machine, too.

Frame: huge cross-sections, wide spacing

In typical fashion, Trek infuses the Superfly Pro with lots of smart engineering but doesn't stray too far from convention in terms of tube shaping.

Key features include a tapered 1 1/8-to-1 1/2" head tube and a 95mm-wide bottom bracket shell – both with molded-in carbon fiber bearing seats – a highly asymmetrical seat tube, carbon dropouts with bolt-in aluminum plates and standard 135mm spacing, especially wide-set chain stays that lend lots of tire clearance, and a bonded-on rubberized plate on the down tube underside to ward off impacts from trail debris – something we made liberal use of on Colorado's notoriously rocky terrain.

Frame weight is impressive though not groundbreaking at 1,340g including the rear derailleur hanger, seatpost collar, water bottle bolts, and chain stay and down tube guards (which aren't easily removable).

Cables are externally routed beneath the top tube for easy maintenance and the front derailleur bolts directly to the seat tube to minimize positioning errors.

Equipment: race ready but still trail friendly

As Trek's flagship cross-country race machine, little expense has been spared dressing up the Superfly Pro frame.

Shift performance from the ultralight SRAM XX group was once again fantastic with uncannily positive and fast front shifts – even under climbing or at low cadence – coupled with impeccably precise and consistent rear shifts. In short, gear changes were simply never something we ever gave a second thought about during testing.

Likewise, the RockShox SID XX 29 fork was well suited for the task with an impressively sturdy chassis, smooth and smartly progressive action through the 100mm stroke, and a well-tuned damper that tackles both trail buzz and bigger hits with equal aplomb. More demanding and complicated sections of trail are still better handled by RockShox's more sophisticated Motion Control BlackBox damper but given the application, we're guessing most users are willing to sacrifice a bit of ride control for the convenient XLoc hydraulic remote lockout lever.

We unfortunately can't heap the same level of praise on the Avid XX brakes. Lever feel, power, modulation, and ergonomics were all excellent but both ends squawked loudly under hard braking – wet or dry, and regardless of pad or rotor condition. Both brakes were at least reliable throughout testing but only after we bled the front straight out of the box.

The vast majority of the included Bontrager kit is excellent, in particular the Race X Lite Carbon Big Sweep flat bar with its comfy 12-degree bend, the comfortable and maneuverable Evoke 4 titanium railed saddle, and the fantastic 29-1 tires with their supple, high-volume casings, fast roll, and surprisingly confident grip in all but marbles and mud.

As we noted last year, though, we'd still prefer to see a different seatpost included as the carbon-wrapped aluminum Race X Lite ACC model is too stiff to take advantage of its small 27.2mm diameter. We traded it out for Bontrager's softer – and lighter – Race XXX Lite all-carbon model and instantly got a big boost in ride comfort.

The included Bontrager Race X Lite FCC wheels are conveniently tubeless-ready (as are the tires, though the requisite rim strips and valve cores annoyingly aren't included with the bike) and they feel both stiff and sturdy enough for genuine trail use, not just race duty. Thankfully, we also never experienced any unnerving pinging and popping from the freehub body that we'd experienced with last year's Bontrager hubs.

However, we still find them to be a little too heavy for a bike of this level, particularly given the premium US$6,829.99/£5,000 asking price.

One place we're happy not to see the Bontrager label at all, however, is on the grips. Last year's foam grips were light but too narrow, prone to rotating on the bar, and uncomfortable. Trek has wisely switched to ESI's silicone foam rubber grips, which are still superlight but far more shock absorbent, grippier in your hands, and far less apt to move. Perhaps the best testament is the fact that even Trek's own Subaru-Trek professional team has used these for years.

Overall, the Trek Superfly Pro is a top-shelf ride and undoubtedly a better bike than the Elite model we tested last year – but then again, it should be considering it's roughly US$2,000 more expensive. It won't be a world beater, however, until it gets nicer wheels, a softer seatpost, and a more refined ride quality.

Trek Superfly FS 9.8 SL review

There’s nothing superfluous about Trek’s light and superbly detailed Superfly

Gary Fisher was one of the original mountain bike racers down Mt Tamalpais in 1970s California and he’s been pushing the limits of off-road bike speed ever since he started fitting touring bike gears and motorbike brake levers to his beach cruiser.

When Trek bought his brand and recruited him as an ambassador his thirst for racing carried on in the development of the original Olympic-winning Goldenfly for Paolo Pezzo. The long-running Superfly hardtail and full suspension range (now under the Trek brand banner) shows just how much racing and evolutionary experience the design has benefited from.

• Highs: A super-light frame with outstanding level of detail, sorted suspension and top value ready to race kit.
• Lows: The flexible frame might not suit powerhouse or precision loving riders.
• Buy If: You want a blisteringly fast, fun and user friendly race or ride all day bike.

Frame and equipment: OCLV OCD

Trek has been building bikes completely from composites for longer than almost anyone else. Its trademark OCLV (Optimum Compaction Low Void) carbon has evolved over 20 years to include specific purpose related compositions and lay-up strategies such as the increased impact protection woven into Superfly’s OCLV Mountain material. Fisher/Trek was also the first large brand to use 29er wheels and tubeless-ready rubber over a decade ago. It’s no surprise then that the Superfly frame is one of the lightest full suspension chassis available at just over 4lb, or that it rolls on 29in wheels with tubeless valves included ready for conversion.

Actually 'rolls' is the wrong word – it positively flies. With minimal drag from the chequerboard tread Team spec tyres and race weight spec throughout, the Superfly whips itself up to speed LOL fast. There’s definitely some flex through the back end (you can actually see the wheel twist if you’re following it up a rocky climb) as the power goes down, but not enough to lose track of what the tyre are doing or to feel like you’re wasting your effort.

While tracking is soft, traction levels are better than you’d expect from the tyres. The custom offset G2 fork boosts the lively and agile feel without undermining the inherent stability of the bigger wheels. It’s long enough in reach to thrive on singletrack with a shorter stem/wider bar cockpit too, so criticising a pure cross-country race bike for having a pure cross-country cockpit isn’t fair.

Ride and handling: easy as 123

Having recently ridden less flexible bikes with far less overall control the importance of sorted and predictable suspension is obvious on the Superfly. The Fox fork and shock aren’t amazing in any way but together with the pedal and brake neutral ABP pivot they keep the bike smoothly floated over most trail chatter so you can keep cranking the speed out.

A neat three position remote lever lets you instantly toggle shock and fork between fully open Descend, tighter Trail and locked out Climb modes too, but it’s balanced enough not to depend on your input. There’s just enough capacity to stop reckless moments ruining your ride and it’s not shy about forcing through an aggressive overtaking/descending line choice either.

In short it does everything you’d hope race suspension would, when it should making it well worth the weight penalty over a hardtail on technical trails in terms of sheer speed and properly playful charisma. It’s impressively affordable for its thoroughbred single ring carbon component loaded performance. There’s also a full range of both carbon and alloy bikes as well as Trek’s Project One custom program options if this particular bike is under/over your budget.
