eMTB Lite – An Update not to be missed.

eMTB Lite – An Update not to be missed.

James Irwin Product News , Workshop Bosch , eMTB Lite

What is eMTB Lite?

Its is a software update that comes with all 2021 Trek E mountain bikes equipped with a Gen 4 Bosch motors .  It replaces the standard Tour mode with a dynamic variable-assist mode simular to EMTB.  But at a lower torque range.

In the same way that any 2020 Trek powered CX Gen 4 motor could be updated to the greater 85nm, eMTB lite can also be retrofitted via a software update. It is something that has been elusively developed between Trek and Bosch and is only available on Trek bikes.

We have updated our Ebike hire fleet to have it and think it offers something very useful. Especially to those who ride ebikes often and prefer to contribute more power and find eco mode too lower an assistance level. With EMTB taking too much power for longer rides.

When riding in eMTB lite the motor torque matches the required amount for the trail ahead, giving you that extra bit of assistance if required compared to standard tour mode.

Want to learn more than give us a call on 01433 659345 or get in touch to get your bike booked in to have the update installed and feel it for yourself.

Well my Trek E-Bike is in for the free software update. Increases torque from 75NM to 85NM. That’s a 13% increase. Should be interesting to see what it feels like. My shop guy really likes it.

  • Trek phone app not connecting to ebike

Has anyone else had this issue, the app just doesn’t seem to be picking up the ebike?

I’ve switched off power saving on the phone and have tried re-installing the app.

Secondly – does it matter; is there anything worthwhile on the app itself, I note software upgrades have to be done at a dealer anyways.

It connects to the bosch flow app fine!

I’m going to bet that it’s a Bluetooth firmware issue.

Update the phone, and get the bike shop to update the bike software.

Is it an iPhone?  If so, go into Settings > Bluetooth > [Trek Bike ID] > tap on Info icon and ‘Forget This Device’ … then go back into the Trek Central app and reconnect to the bike.  I guess if it’s an Android phone then there will be an equivalent way of removing the Bluetooth connection.

Please enable JavaScript

Humix

I have just tried disconnecting the bluetooth and reconnecting the Trek app, but still doesn’t work. The bike’s bluetooth does pair with the phone bluetooth, and the bosch flow app works fine.

For some reason the Trek app doesn’t connect, not does a garmin edge 830.

Firmware Update Causing Speed Issues?

I have a 2021 Trek Rail 7. I took it in for service at a Trek shop last week and they mentioned the firmware needed to updated. Once I got the bike back, I have had issues with the speedometer jumping around and the motor cutting out at higher speeds. No error codes are being thrown. The Trek dealer talked to Bosch and now they want to replace the speed sensor to see if that resolves the issue. Curious if anyone else has had similar issues after a firmware update? I don't want to pay for a sensor replacement only to have it not resolved. I rode the bike the day before I took it in with no issues, so it seems that firmware is the culprit.

Trek replaced the speed sensor and the issue did go away. It looks to be coincidence that it happened the same time the firmware was updated. All good now.

@Roman - I Just noticed that an updated firmware for the motor has been released today- I would love to know what is changing in all these different firmware in order to decide whether I should bother taking my bike to the dealer and getting it updated - its not a quick process to take my bike to the dealer and get an update, so understanding whether its worth my while would be a great help.

Can anyone tell me how to find the installed firmware version on this motor? My wife has just received her new Scott Lumen eRide 900 and I would like to check the revision status. I have paired the bike with the TQ app but can’t find any info on firmware or serial numbers for the motor and the battery. What am I missing? Does the app notify me about the availability of any updates? Thanks!

Borut said: Their biggest problem is that tq doesnt develop app for their motors. App developer is outside company. Click to expand...

True.

I suspect there is virtually no chance of this happening. Roman from TQ was a member on here a year or so ago and was very enthusiastic about getting everyone input in to how to improve things, but he very quickly deleted his account and never came back. I suspect the current HPR 50 has had all the development its going to get and it will be an entirely new motor that gets any substantial improvements. There hasnt been a firmware update since January last year.

this is rather sad news.

Amazing motor with very poor app support .

Very poor customer support as a whole. I contacted them twice about their lousy cadence and power measuring. They even did not find it useful to answer. And that hurts when you spend that much money on a bike.

Connecting/Pairing

Activity tracking and navigation, motor tuning, how do i get it.

On an iPhone? Get it here . On an Android phone? Get it here .

Which operating systems/phones are supported?

iOS version 14 and above, as well as Android version 9 and above are supported.

Is there a web browser version to view my account or ride data?

Your user profile account data can be viewed by logging in to Trebikes.com. You will be able to see your bike in your bike garage on Trekbikes.com. All other app data and functions can only be accessed through the app.

What if I don’t have a Trek customer account?

Download and install the app. Then press 'create account' at the bottom of the screen and follow the prompts.

Why do I have to have a Trek customer account?

The app requires a user account for you to have an exceptional experience with your bike and that requires some profile information. For example, your weight is used to provide specific suspension calculation recommendations and range calculations.

How do I check if all my software and firmware is up to date?

Check for software updates in the app settings under “Info,” or check the app store. E-bike system firmware updates must be done through Diagnostic Tool at a Trek retailer.

I skipped the tutorial but now I want to go through it. How do I access it again?

Onboarding and Motor Tuning tutorials can be accessed in the app settings under “Help”.

Do I need Wi-Fi to connect to my bike or use the app?

We suggest using Wi-Fi the first time you use the app, as you will need to download a base map and regional map to use any of the navigation, range estimate or maps features. You can use data to download these maps, but they are large ~250 MB files. You do not need Wi-Fi to use the app after the map download is complete.

Is the base map download required to move forward in the app? Or can I use the other app features without the map files?

The base map is required to set up the app and use any map features.

Do I have to enable location access to the app?

Yes, if you want ride tracking to work. Your phone will prompt you to enable location access at all times.

Why is precise location permission requested in the app?

Your precise location is needed for ride tracking, route assistance and range calculation.

Why are Bluetooth permissions requested in the app?

Bluetooth permissions are needed for the app to connect and interact with the bike and its sensors.

How do I change my password?

The app uses your Trekbikes.com account to log in. You can change your password in Trekbikes.com account settings .

Can I change units of measurement?

Yes. Press Settings and then Rider Profile. Choose between Imperial and Metric units, change language or allow downloads using mobile data (default is Wi-Fi-only).

Does Power Saving functionality on my phone affect the app?

Yes. We recommend adding the app to the power saving exclusion list on your device.

In which countries is the app available?

The app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play everywhere except China, India, Brazil and Japan.

Which languages are supported by the app?

English (US), English (UK), German, Spanish (ES), Spanish (MX) Italian, French (FR), French (CAN), Dutch, Danish, Slovak, Portuguese (PT), Portuguese (BR), Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Czech

Can I use the app with any bike?

Currently, the app is intended for use with Trek and Electra bikes equipped with TQ, Hyena and BEP e-systems.

Would maps and GPS-based tracking work with any bike?

No, these features still use data from the e-bike system.

How do I connect my bike?

1. Turn on your bike 2. Navigate to the ‘Searching for bikes’ screen on the Trek Central app 3. Select the bike you want to connect in the list of bikes found. Note: On TQ bikes, a six-digit code will appear on the display once you select the bike on your phone. Enter this code when prompted After connecting for the first time, the bike and app will connect automatically when both are turned on. If your app loses connection with the bike, reconnect from the My Bike section in the app Settings or the Ready to Ride section of the app Dashboard.

How do I verify that my bike is connected to my app?

To verify connection, change the assist mode on your bike. The app should reflect these changes.

What are those numbers in the bike name? Can it be renamed?

That’s the Bluetooth address of that e-system, and it cannot be renamed at this time.

Can I give my bike a nickname?

Yes. The nickname can be set after pairing the bike or by going to the My Bike section in the app Settings. The nickname of the bike will then be shown in the Ready to Ride Dashboard, the Pressure Calculator screen and the My Bike screen.

Can I connect my bike to more than one phone?

You can pair multiple phones to the same bike, but only one phone will connect and actively work with that bike.

Can I pair additional sensors with the app?

The Trek Central app will pair with Quarq TyreWiz and RockShox AirWiz sensors. No other additional sensors are supported at this time. Not all bikes come with sensors.

Where can I pair my Quarq TyreWiz or RockShox AirWiz sensors?

Go to Settings>My Bike to connect or reconnect those sensors.

Can I pair additional sensors or devices with my bike? Like a heart rate monitor?

You can pair most Bluetooth (BLE) or ANT+ compatible devices with the app for additional ride tracking.

Does the app integrate with other e-bike apps like SRAM AXS?

You can connect your Strava and Komoot accounts to the app to upload ride data. Trek Central currently does not integrate with SRAM AXS or any other apps.

What can I do if my phone keeps disconnecting?

trek e bike software update

  • 3. 3. Fully delete the connection in your phone's Bluetooth settings, then re-pair your phone(s) to the TQ display.
  • - Speed settings
  • - Wheel size

Does the app work with range extender batteries?

Yes. If your bike has a compatible range extender plugged in, Trek Central will display your combined bike battery and range extender battery percentages.

How are Range Estimations calculated?

The estimated range for each mode is calculated using a robust algorithm that considers topography, rider weight, wind and more. The bike must be connected to the app to use this enhanced calculation.

How can I export an activity?

Press the History button on the bottom of the screen and choose an activity to export to Strava or Komoot. You can also AirDrop your activities to other app users. When your Strava account or Komoot account is connected, your rides will be automatically exported to Strava or Komoot.

How can I import or manually enter an activity?

You can import a ride file in the “Imported Rides” tab of the Ride History section.

What if the recommended pressures seem wrong?

These settings are an average starting point for the stock tyres and suspension. Some riders will want to adjust from there based on riding style or terrain. Changing tyres or suspension may also affect your recommended starting pressures. For more details on how to set up your suspension, visit Trekbikes.com suspension set-up .

How do I customise the data fields on the Ride Dashboard?

On Trek bikes, press and hold a data field to re-assign its metric.  This option is not available on Electra bikes.

When my bike is due for service, can I take it to any bike shop?

Take your bike to an authorised retailer to ensure that a qualified technician performs the service. Other retailers will not be familiar with the frame or e-system, and will not have access to relevant service bulletins and diagnostic software.

Can I be alerted when my bike reaches a certain battery percentage while charging?

Yes. In the My Bike section of the app, you can enable Charge Alerts and set at what % of battery you would like to be alerted. In order to receive the notification, your phone will need to be connected to the bike and within Bluetooth range.

Why would I want to use Charge Alerts?

All lithium-ion batteries are happiest in the middle of their charging range and don't like to sit in a fully charged or fully discharged state for extended periods of time. Setting a Charge Alert helps give you more control over the long-term health of your battery. For example, if your daily commute uses 50% of your battery, you might opt to receive a charge alert when the battery reaches 80% charge. This would keep the battery between 30% and 80% at any given time, right in the sweet spot for battery longevity. Have a long weekend ride planned? Top it off to 100% and get that extra range when you need it!

Do I have to ride with my phone and keep the app open to track a ride or navigate?

You can ride without your phone, but you will not get any data recording or other app features.

Does my phone need to be connected to my bike to use activity tracking or navigation?

Yes, to use app features, your phone must be with you and connected to the bike. You do not have to leave the app open, just running in the background to record e-system data. You can carry your phone in your pocket or a bag while the app is running, and it will still work.

If I do not take my phone or track my activity, will the odometer reading on the app Dashboard still be accurate?

Yes. The odometer data comes from the bike’s e-system. The odometer reading on the Dashboard will update the next time the app connects to the bike.

How do I start and finish activity tracking?

With Auto Start enabled (default setting), open the app, verify the bike is connected and go for a ride. With Auto Start disabled, go to the Ride Dashboard and press Record. Press Pause or Finish to stop tracking. Turn the Auto Start function on or off at Settings>Navigation Settings>Automatic Ride Tracking

What if I forget to stop tracking my activity and drive away with my bike on my vehicle?

No worries! To track activity, your phone must be connected to your bike, and the bike’s rear wheel must be rolling. When the bike is inactive on your vehicle, the Trek Central app will stop tracking your activity.

How can I delete a ride?

You can delete rides on the Ride History page.

How does activity tracking work? Which values are tracked?

Activity tracking uses data from your phone and e-system to track speed, distance, elevation, bike power output, rider power output, location and more.

How is the distance calculated?

Distance in the app is calculated using your phone’s GPS. The bike’s odometer reading is calculated via the e-system sensors.

How are calories calculated?

Calories are calculated using an algorithm based on weight, distance, terrain, power and sex. It is important to note that this is a rough calculation and should be referenced accordingly.

The speed shown on my e-bike display differs from the app. Why is that?

When the app is paired with a bike, speed on the e-bike display is calculated using data from the rear wheel speed sensor. Ensure that the wheel circumference is accurately programmed in the bike settings and in the settings for any other devices you are using. When the app is not paired with a bike, speed on the app is calculated using data from your phone’s GPS, which can be affected by environmental factors like dense tree cover, difficult terrain and weather.

Can I pause a ride instead of stopping it and starting a new one? Like on a multi-day trip?

You can pause a ride, but after 30 minutes of your bike being inactive, all activity tracking ends. This is regardless of whether the ride is manually paused. If using auto record, the app will stop the recording after a 10-minute pause.

What do the red lines on the Range Cloud mean?

The thinner line is an estimate of your round-trip range (where you will reach 50% of your remaining charge). The bolder line is an estimate of your one-way range (where your battery will be empty).

Where are Trek Central activities stored?

Ride data is saved to the local device. In other words, if the app is deleted on the device and reinstalled, then any previously completed rides are lost.

How can I transfer Trek Central activities between devices?

Export Ride to File > Share to new device > Import Ride on new app on new device Export Ride to Strava/Komoot on original device > Import Ride from Strava/Komoot to new device > Import Ride on new app on new device All rides that are imported to a new app on a new device will show under ‘imported’ since they are not considered ‘recorded’ for the current app installation

What is automatic ride tracking?

When enabled and with the Trek Central app open on your phone, automatic ride tracking will recognise when a ride is starting and automatically start to record. Once you've finished riding, press pause and finish on the Ride screen to save your ride.

How do I enable automatic ride tracking?

To enable automatic ride tracking in the app, go to Settings > Navigation Settings > Enable automatic ride tracking

Why doesn't Trek Central's elevation data perfectly match my other ride tracking app/device?

Different applications use different data and calculations to estimate elevation change, which can cause variances between apps. This is normal.

How do I adjust motor-assist behaviour?

For Trek bikes only, motor tuning can be accessed via the Ready to Ride Dashboard: select Tune Your Motor. Or, go to Motor Tuning section in the app Settings. Motor tuning is currently not available for Electra bikes.

Can I tune the motor to keep assisting above the factory max-assist speed?

What if i adjust the settings and do not like it after riding it.

It is easy to reset to the factory settings by pressing “reset defaults” at the bottom of the Motor Tuning screen.

If I achieve a customised tune that I really like, can I save it?

Your adjusted tune settings will be saved on the bike, so you will not need to retune every time you ride. However, if you adjust the settings again, you cannot save or go back to the previous settings. Look for preset tunes and the ability to save customised tunes in future updates.

How do I know what to adjust?

'Customising your motor tune is highly dependent on many factors including your body type, riding style, personal priorities and even the kind of terrain you are riding. Since it is so personal, we encourage you to experiment on a repeatable climb or section of trail that requires a lot of pedalling so you can feel the difference after adjusting the settings. Max Power controls the maximum output of the motor and can be turned down to increase range. Max assist (only available on some models) controls how the power is delivered. It is the factor by which your own pedalling power is amplified by the motor. Lowering the assist factor can increase range or provide better traction on loose or wet trails. However, the lower the assist factor, the harder you must work to get power from the motor. Pedal response (only available on some models) controls how quickly the power engages. Go with the quickest response to get up to speed straight away. Go more gradual to prevent lurching.'

Can I reset to the default motor tune without using the app?

On TQ bikes, yes. With the bike turned on, hold down the button below the display while holding down the less assist button near the shifter for +10 seconds. The display will ask you to confirm a reset on the bike. Confirm, and you're back to default tune.

I just swapped a Tesla Model 3 for a Model Y and Elon Musk’s brutal layoffs ruined the experience

Avatar for Michelle Lewis

I turned in a 2021 Tesla Model 3 and leased a 2024 Model Y, and I learned firsthand how badly Tesla’s layoffs have affected morale and customer service.

My firsthand experience of Tesla layoffs

My husband and I wanted to work with Tesla’s new South Burlington, Vermont, Tesla Center because it’s an easy 1 hour 20 minutes drive away. However, it’s not handling lease returns or new car deliveries yet.

The fledgling team at South Burlington doesn’t know when lease returns or new car deliveries will start. They told me, “Could be weeks, could be months.” The customer service team in Las Vegas didn’t know either. Kinda makes you wonder, who does actually know?

Anyway, we had to do the thing that Vermonters have had to do for years, which is drive five hours south to the Tesla Center in Paramus, New Jersey. That’s because New Hampshire doesn’t have a Tesla Center, and Massachusetts doesn’t allow out-of-state car pickups.

But first, I had to go through the leasing process on the Tesla app. Spoiler: It wasn’t good.

The app first suggested a delivery date that we simply couldn’t attend – driving to New Jersey and back in a day is a 12-hour day. So I repeatedly called Tesla customer service to make alternate arrangements, and no one answered the phone. My favorite part was the robo recording voice that said, “We care about you” then said goodbye. What a time suck.

Tesla then canceled our car because we couldn’t confirm the delivery date on the app (or speak to a human on the phone, or by email or text, because the company is now short-staffed).

Pre-layoffs, I was working with an ownership loyalty advisor based in Fremont, but that person stopped replying to me when the cuts started. In desperation, I sent that person multiple emails and texts. (Everyone in this article is anonymous to protect their privacy – and their jobs.) The loyalty advisor finally surfaced via text, apologized, and put the Model Y back into our account.

I restarted the leasing process and filled out the finance application on the app. It sat unapproved for days. So I called Tesla again and this time got a Las Vegas-based customer service rep on the phone. That person said that “it didn’t go through for whatever reason” and asked me to resubmit my application from scratch. That was a pain but whatever.

My finance application then sat unapproved, for days, right up to the night before we were due to pick the Model Y up in Paramus. The customer service rep said that finance is short-staffed and overwhelmed with applications, thanks to the new 0.99% APR financing offer on Model Ys. The rep in Las Vegas advised that we call Paramus in the morning and tell them we can’t come because finance hadn’t approved our leasing application.

I woke up early the next morning to see in the app that Tesla Finance had approved our application overnight. I clicked on “accept” and was repeatedly rewarded with a 500 error message. I just. Couldn’t. Complete. The transaction. [Silent scream.]

Since we had approval, we quickly took off for New Jersey. We were in Massachusetts when the Las Vegas customer service rep called me in response to my text pleas for help. I told that person that approval had gone through at 1:30 am and they said, “Yeah, they’re having to work really long hours to keep up, they’re overwhelmed.”

The customer service rep pushed my lease terms acceptance through, with my permission, and then I finally – finally! – finished the leasing process on the app. A snippet of a convo the rep and I had:

Me: Have layoffs left you all short-staffed? Has it affected morale? Tesla customer service rep: [silence] Um… this is a recorded line. Me: So I’m just going to take that as a yes. Rep: [nervous giggle]

We arrived for our 3 pm appointment. The Tesla Center reps were completely open about how layoffs have affected them and wanted me to share what they said:

We were left alone here [no layoffs] because we’re a major distribution center. But Springfield [NJ] got wiped out. Sometimes some of us go down there to help them. We want you to share that everyone’s morale is low. We are overworked and understaffed, and we feel sad for our friends who were our colleagues who lost their jobs. This has been really, really bad.

The in-person Model 3/Model Y swap was seamless and the person who helped us do that was great. In fact, every person – once I could get them on the phone – was helpful and knowledgeable. There just aren’t enough of them.

Electrek’s Take

I made the decision to once again spend my hard-earned money at Tesla. Elon’s layoffs made the entire process stressful and unpleasant because there weren’t enough people to assist. These layoffs have not only affected morale, they’ve seriously harmed customer service quality, and thus the customer experience.

The Tesla staff we dealt with are professionals that have been thrown into a situation where they’re basically trying to spin gold out of straw. It’s not their fault.

It should have felt celebratory, picking up the Model Y, like it did three years ago with the Model 3. I then wrote about my wonderful experience, and to my delight, Elon retweeted my story. This time, I feel exhausted, sad, and disappointed.

I told my Electrek colleagues about my experience. Jamie reminded me of his recent post where he pointed out that Elon is “currently  trying to convince shareholders to give him $55 billion  – enough to pay the 14,000+ employees he’s laid off six-figure salaries for ~40 years.”

Fred initially expressed concern that people underestimate the impact of the layoffs. So I asked him to elaborate on his thoughts. He explained:

Layoffs are always brutal, but Tesla’s latest round of layoffs were especially brutal. Some employees drove long commutes to work to realize their credentials were revoked, some worked entire shifts only to get home to realize that they had received a personal email telling them they had been fired midway or even prior to their shifts. Some were fired to make an example of their team and boss for pushing back against further layoffs. For those who remain, those laid off were their friends who were treated like that. It shakes your belief in your employer. That’s when company morale takes a real hit.  Then, your friends find other jobs and they let you know about them, where they can still contribute to the mission to accelerate sustainable energy with better conditions and no pigeon CEO. That creates another hit to morale, and an extended exodus of talent.

Top comment by Phillip Stafford

I absolutely am out. I got a survey from Tesla asking why I abandoned my CT purchase, and another asking to trade in my old S for a new one. I was honest and said both plans were cancelled as a direct result of Tesla's layoffs. As a customer I want my voice to be heard by management. My message: my next two car purchases are going to Polestar. They are quietly making a mark, no emotional tweets from their CEO about making examples or dozens of unkept promises. They are smart, driven, well-managed. It's time that the industry overwhelms the current leader and moves on.

More than once in this chaotic process I thought about abandoning Tesla and leasing an EV from another automaker. The only reason I stuck with the Model Y is because I was already in pretty deep, the Model Y is a great deal right now, and, well, I love driving Teslas. I’m really down about it all, but I’m not out. Yet.
