Travel with Meaning with Mike Schibel of the Travel with Meaning Podcast

Mike Schibel was born and raised in Pacific Palisades, California, and was exposed to stunning travel destinations from my crib!  When he was five, his Grandparents gushed about a recent trip to Egypt and after seeing those Pyramids, he knew he had to travel!

As a Junior at the University of Arizona, Mike was ready for something new.  He spent a semester abroad in London, exploring Europe, Scandinavia, and North Africa. Mike stepped way outside his comfort zone and tried new things.

All roads led back to LA and the Entertainment industry post-college. For a decade, he rose the ranks as an agent and talent manager.  Which of course led to the search for a deeper meaning in his life.

In 2010 Schibel bought a one-way ticket to Australia.  Without a plan, he spent a year on the road, meeting interesting people, seeing incredible places, and having memorable inspiring conversations.

Mike’s passion for traveling, storytelling, and community building led me to launch, “Travel With Meaning” in 2017. He created “Travel Talk Live” to bring travelers together to recreate the feelings he experienced on the road, build an authentic community to inspire and encourage others to travel.

In the Spring of 2019, Mike launched the “Travel With Meaning” Podcast to continue to grow our community.

In this episode of The Millennial Travel Podcast I discuss with Mike Schibel:

  • How did Mike get started with travel?
  • Has Mike ever tried to make others happy in other to find his own fulfillment?
  • Tell us about his experience at Cafe Gratitude in San Francisco.
  • How does Mike try to work gratitude into his life?
  • How can we be more “pura vida” in our life and live a more grateful life?
  • How can we be as present at home as we when we are traveling?
  • How did Mike start the Travel with Meaning Podcast?

The Millennial Travel Podcast Rapid Fire Questions I ask Mike Schibel:

- If Mike could go anywhere for a life-changing retreat where would it be?

- If he could have one person on the Travel with Meaning podcast who would it be?

- Mike’s top place to have a meaningful conversation

- The country that has made the most impact on Mike

Traveling: how to travel the world on a budget audible audiobook – unabridged.

We should all start to travel more. Why? We only have one life, and it should be about experiencing new things, making memories, eating new foods, talking with strangers, hearing new languages, discovering new places, learning new cultures, seeing how other people live, living our best moment, and discovering new hobbies and passions. If you do all of the above, you will see life differently.

They say, if you travel a lot, you will be a happier person. By traveling, we discover who we really are, and we appreciate life and the things that we have. The media always scares us with negativity about other countries; but if only people knew there are great kind people out there!

We are in the 21st century, and times have changed. You will be surprised how much you can travel for cheap if you do some good research before booking your trip. It's not like before where only one trip would cost you hundreds of dollars or even thousands. Nowadays, there are a lot of websites and apps and that means more competition between companies.

You can now find $25 flights, $3 meal, $20 accommodations, $5 transportation. Nowadays, it's even possible to get free flights and meals for already traveling. With all the great technology that we have, nowadays, it's the easiest time to travel around the world and the cheapest.

People are always negative, and say, "It's too expensive to travel", or "I don't have time", but they never do some research, and that's why, when they do travel they get the bad deals!

Mike Lee, Matt Gaetz, Tucker Carlson, Don Jr. travel to El Salvador for Bukele’s 2nd inauguration

A populist party in El Salvador saw right-wing figures converge to celebrate the second inauguration of President Nayib Bukele, including notables among American conservatives.

Saturday in Central America, Bukele was sworn in for another five-year term atop the Nuevas Ideas Party which had won a dominating 54 of 60 parliamentary seats. Celebrating his victory with 83% of the vote, largely attributed to promoting law and order while taking a stand against Marxist indoctrination, world leaders weren’t alone in flocking to the capital of San Salvador.

Pictures posted to social media included a number or prominent Republicans and vocal supporters of former President Donald Trump that included Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz and María Elvira Salazar, Utah Sen. Mike Lee as well as commentator Tucker Carlson and the president’s own son and future daughter-in-law, Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle.

“In El Salvador for the inauguration of President Nayib Bukele,” wrote Lee sharing images from the event. “He defeated his principal opponent, Manuel Flores, in February’s presidential election. To the best of my knowledge, Bukele made no attempt to imprison Flores.”

In addition to “Sound of Freedom” producer Eduardo Verástegui, journalist Sara Carter and Conservative Political Action Conference Chair Matt Schlapp, a slew of foreign leaders attended the ceremony including Spain’s King Felipe VI, Presidents Xiomara Castro of Honduras, Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, Santiago Peña of Paraguay, Rodrigo Chaves Robles of Costa Rica and the equally lauded populist from Argentina, President Javier Milei who had been seen embracing both Bukele and Trump.

The presence of so many figures of import was not without danger as the Associated Press reported that a bomb threat meant to coincide with the inauguration had been thwarted after National Police had seized explosive devices in a raid of a “former rebel stronghold.” The threat was attributed to the leftist FMNL Party.

During his inauguration speech, the president had said, “We have finally conquered fear and are a truly free country.”

That message came only a few short months after Bukele’s re-election had updated that their public education system had “removed every use or trace of gender ideology from public schools.”

Verástegui, who has stood firmly in the fight against human trafficking, congratulated Bukele with a message which, when translated, included the message, “I ask God to continue blessing this great nation.”

Meanwhile, Salazar expressed optimism that Bukele’s stance against criminality would lend a hand in bringing an end to gang violence, “Miami and its Central American community have a partner we can work with from Congress to successfully crush the gangs threatening our Hemisphere.”

My congratulations to President @nayibbukele for earning a second term to represent his people. María Elvira Salazar (@RepMariaSalazar) June 1, 2024

Of course, amid the celebration of figures from across the political right, a representative from President Joe Biden’s administration had also been dispatched. Ever gaslighting, the White House had sent impeached Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who posted in part, “The U.S. stands ready to build on our partnership with El Salvador to foster economic growth and cooperate on regional migration and security.”

Inside Zara and Mike Tindall’s luxe Aussie getaway

I n the sun-drenched haven of Australia's Gold Coast, Zara and Mike Tindall  find their slice of paradise, a place they've openly cherished over the years and where they attend the Magic Millions.

Zara said this year coming to the Magic Millions was like ”coming back home.” ”It really is like a family and it’s been hard not being here for two years,” she added.

This glittering beachside town, renowned for its luxurious allure and celebrity draw, holds a special spot in their hearts, not just for its scenic beauty but for the vibrant life it offers.

The Gold Coast, a place where celebrities like Margot Robbie, who was born closeby, and others such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Rebel Wilson, and Jude Law have been seen soaking up the local charm and luxury, offers a peek into its star-studded appeal. But where do these luminaries stay, dine, and unwind?

You may also like

Princess beatrice kisses cousin zara tindall during lavish joint holiday, zara tindall's quirky and colourful race day wardrobe: magic millions mini dresses, royal ascot fascinators, more, where to stay.

One of the crown jewels of accommodation here is The Langham Gold Coast. Known for its opulence and exclusive atmosphere, it has hosted a range of celebrities from Rebel Wilson to Harry Styles and Sir Elton John.

It's particularly famous for its Chairman’s Ocean Suite, a sprawling 340 square meter haven of luxury with a double-decker coffee table and a bathroom so lavish, that it includes a spa with underwater disco lights and, unexpectedly, a sofa.

The suite not only offers breathtaking beach views but also pampers with high-end details like quality materials and state-of-the-art stereo systems.

The Chaun spa at The Langham is also a stand-out. Offering the perfect place for stressed out celebrities to unwind and pamper, treatments are guided by the principles of Chinese medicine.

Where to eat

For gastronomic experiences, celebrities often visit Tang, the Chinese restaurant at The Langham, known for its exquisite nine-course degustation menus paired perfectly with fine wines. The ambience and culinary delights make it a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste the high life.

Margot Robbie's personal favourite, Tarte Beach House in Currumbin, offers a relaxed yet refined dining experience.

Drawing inspiration from the Hamptons, it provides a picturesque setting by Currumbin Creek, where dishes like the chicken sandwich with miso mayo and crispy chicken skin are local legends.

For a taste of yacht life without ever leaving shore, La Luna sets the scene with a decor inspired by Mykonos and Saint-Tropez. Here, luxury meets leisure right by the water with king-size daybeds and a poolside menu that boasts everything from oysters to wagyu beef burgers.

Rick Shores, another celebrity haunt, stands out not only for its stunning Burleigh Beach views but also for its incredible Asian fusion menu that captivates with dishes like Rick’s famous Moreton Bay bug rolls and juicy king prawn yellow curry. It's a place where the likes of Jude Law come to savor mouth-watering creations while enjoying the beachfront vibe.

When it comes to entertainment, the Gold Coast’s HOTA, home of the arts, is a cultural hub that draws in the likes of Rebel and Margot with its diverse offerings from concerts to art exhibitions. Here, one can dine in hatted restaurant Palette where Marco Pierre White was a guest chef, enjoying an exquisite fine dining experience that complements the artistic surroundings.

For those seeking a more personalised adventure, Duffy’s offers private boat tours with a skipper to guide guests through the Gold Coast’s waterways, providing stunning views of the coastline and glimpses of luxury homes like Jackie Chan’s villa.

Black men sue American Airlines, alleging racial discrimination on Phoenix flight

travel with mike

Three Black men who were removed from a Jan. 5 American Airlines flight from Phoenix to New York City are suing the airline for race discrimination.

After the flight was boarded, a representative for the airline removed the three men − Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph and Xavier Veal − and five other Black men from the plane without explanation, according to the lawsuit, filed Wednesday, May 29, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

The lawsuit described the men's experience as "humiliating, degrading and deeply traumatizing."

"Our clients filed this lawsuit because they want to hold the airline accountable," Lauren Bateman, an attorney with the Public Citizen Litigation Group, said in a statement to The Arizona Republic.

"They paid for their tickets just like everyone else, and they had the right to expect the same treatment as everyone else − not to be singled out and humiliated simply because of the color of their skin."

Why 3 Black men are suing American Airlines alleging race discrimination

Jackson, Joseph and Veal were traveling to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York from Burbank, Calif., with a connecting flight at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The men did not know each other before the flight and were not seated together.

The three of them, along with five other Black men, were removed from the flight without explanation. When the men left the plane and reached the jet bridge on their way to the gate to rebook, they realized all of the passengers removed from the flight were Black.

According to the lawsuit, the men learned they were ejected after a white male flight attendant complained about a passenger with body odor, even though no one accused them of having body odor. The flight attendant who allegedly made the complaint is not named in the lawsuit.

When one of the men told an American Airlines employee he felt they were singled out because they were Black, the representative said, "I agree, I agree," according to the lawsuit.

While waiting at the gate, Joseph told another airline employee he felt the flight attendant who made the complaint treated him differently because of his skin color, and the employee responded, "Correct. I do not disagree with you," according to the lawsuit.

American Airlines' statement on the racial discrimination lawsuit

American Airlines issued this statement on the incident and the lawsuit:

"We take all claims of discrimination very seriously and want our customers to have a positive experience when they choose to fly with us. Our teams are currently investigating the matter, as the claims do not reflect our core values or our purpose of caring for people."

American eventually let the men fly

American Airlines employees first told the eight men that they'd have to be rebooked on another flight, but were later told there were no other flights to JFK Airport that evening. Around that same time, the other passengers on Flight 832 were told there was a delay because of a concern about body odor.

After about an hour, American reversed course and allowed the men back on the plane. They agreed to reboard despite "significant misgivings and the humiliation of their initial removal from the flight" because they needed to return home, according to the lawsuit.

The flight took off around 5:09 p.m., about an hour later than scheduled.

Lawsuit alleges 'rude and discriminatory' behavior by American Airlines

Most of the men returned to their original seats. Joseph requested a different seat to avoid encountering the flight attendant who allegedly made the body odor complaint; the airline offered an Asian woman an upgrade to first class and reassigned Joseph to the woman's original seat in coach.

The lawsuit stated that Jackson and Veal were served by the flight attendant, and in each interaction the flight attendant behaved "in a rude and discriminatory manner." The men also said the predominantly white passengers on the flight "eyed them with anger and undue suspicion," blaming them for the flight delay.

Once the flight arrived at JFK Airport around 11:30 p.m., Jackson asked to speak with an American employee about the incident but his request was refused and he was rushed off the plane, according to the lawsuit. Despite being told he could speak to an American representative inside the terminal, there were no employees available as it was close to midnight.

No names of American employees the men said they spoke with are given in the lawsuit. When the men asked for their names, they refused their requests, the lawsuit alleges. One representative allegedly concealed her name tag.

We asked American Airlines if any action was taken against the flight attendant for the actions alleged in the lawsuit and whether he is still employed with the company. We will update this story with their response.

REPORT CARD

Jinsa report defends israel’s conduct in gaza but critiques its larger strategy, israel to launch travel authorization program for foreign visitors.

The new system is similar to those used in the United States, Canada and Australia

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - APRIL 14: Passengers at Ben Gurion Airport wait after Israel closed its airspace to all domestic and international flights and canceled flights in the wake of Iran's attack on Israel last month.

Israel is set to launch a travel authorization program for foreign visitors to the country, beginning with a pilot program starting on Saturday for travelers arriving from the U.S. and Germany.

The program, which is similar to those used in the U.S., Canada and Australia, will require non-Israeli passport holders traveling to the country to obtain electronic travel authorization (ETA-IL) – through israel-entry.piba.gov.il – before setting off on their trip.

In a statement this week, Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority said the new program was aimed at improving security, immigration and general services.

The ministry said it would “help the authorities to obtain information about the passenger before he or she even boards the plane, and if a problem arises that prevents him or her from entering Israel, the passenger will be referred to the Israeli embassy in his or her country of residence.”

“It will prevent any unpleasant surprises for passengers who land at the border and are refused entry,” the statement said.

Israel’s Ministry of Tourism also explained that the new system would speed up online confirmations and “allow for a simplified, stress-free entry process through electronic check-in machines when visiting Israel.”

Over the past two years, as Israel slowly reopened its borders following the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv had been subjected to lengthy waits at passport control, while Israelis with biometric passports could whiz through using electronic scanning machines.

The ministry said that starting on July 1, travelers from all visa-exempt countries will be able to take advantage of the pilot program, and from Aug. 1, the new system will be instituted as the new entry protocol for all incoming travelers from visa-exempt countries.

Once approved for travel through the system, visitors will be permitted to stay in Israel for up to 90 days and the authorization will remain valid for up to two years, or until the passport used to apply for the ETA-IL has expired.

The ministry also emphasized that during the pilot phase June 1-July 31, the $7 application fee will be waived.

“As a tech-forward county, streamlining the entry process with the new online ETA-IL application is a natural progression,” said Eyal Carlin, commissioner of tourism to North America in Israel’s Tourism Ministry. “It will allow for smoother arrivals and more time for travelers to enjoy all Israel has to offer.”

“While we are currently in a challenging time, we encourage those with an interest in visiting the country to take note of the new entry process as they continue their travel planning,” he said.

Israel first announced that it would be implementing a travel authorization system for all foreign visitors, including U.S. citizens, last year as it was in the final phase of applying for the U.S.’ coveted Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

In September 2023, after more than three decades of attempts, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Tony Blinken announced that Israel’s application to the  VWP had been successful. On Nov. 30, the country was fully incorporated into the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), allowing Israeli citizens to apply for visa-free travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days.

Our political correspondent Rob Powell is following the Tory campaign in Oxfordshire, where the PM is focusing largely on sports clubs.

This is linked to the policy announcement today that the Conservatives will shake up the Equality Act and ensure "biological sex" is a protected characteristic.

Rob explains that under the changes, places such as prisons or rape crisis centres could say they are solely for people whose biological sex is female.

He says the party is "targeting the traditional Tory core vote", as well as trying to "stop leakage to Reform".

But he also believes the Tories are trying to "put Labour on the spot to find out what they would do".

Labour have said they wouldn't amend the Equality Act as they don't think there's a need, but that guidance should be updated.

Supporters of Labour are much more split on the issue than Conservative voters, Rob says.

He adds the Tories want to "pose that question to Labour" and are "setting up for the head-to-head debates in the coming days".

Labour has today launched an attack on Rishi Sunak, saying he earned a fortune working at a hedge fund that engineered a deal that was described as "extremely risky" around the financial crisis.

Sir Keir Starmer is asked by a journalist from The Guardian why Labour has waited so long to scrutinise the PM's record in his past career in finance.

He replies: "We have raised this before. I think it is relevant at this election for the voters to know what did the two candidates for prime minister do before they came into politics.

"I was working for the Crown Prosecution Service … trying to protect those who live in the United Kingdom from crime - Rishi Sunak was making money betting against the country in the financial crisis.

"I think that's for him to answer as to what he was doing before he came into politics."

That concludes the news conference with the Labour leader.

Sir Keir Starmer is challenged again on his position on the war in Gaza, and is asked if human rights matter there, in his view.

He replies: "Yes, of course, and international law matters in Gaza, and accountability matters in Gaza.

"And you wouldn't be human if you weren't affected by the images that we've seen, the reports coming out of Gaza, the sheer number of people who've been killed - many of them women and children.

"And also the knowledge that [Israeli] hostages are still being held."

He continues that the "best thing we can do for both sides is to press for that ceasefire immediately, straight away", adding: "That's been our position for weeks and weeks and weeks and months."

The key will be stopping the fighting, getting hostages out, and getting aid in.

"And then that duty we will have if we come into power to play our full part in resolving the conflict in the Middle East for the long-term and that can only happen if we work with our allies, if we play our part on the world stage and clear the path for a two-state solution."

Next, Sir Keir Starmer is asked if the public battle with the left of his party is part of his campaign strategy, and if he is comfortable with the way Faiza Shaheen - who was blocked from standing days ago despite having been selected by her local party - has been treated.

The Labour leader reiterates that his party has "changed", and "part of it is about making sure I've got the best possible candidates to put before the country".

He points to the veterans standing behind him who will be standing for Labour.

"That is evidence of a changed Labour Party," he declares.

A journalist from Forces News is next to ask a question of the Labour leader, and it centres on the nuclear deterrent.

All prime ministers when they come into the role have to write a letter to the commanders of Royal Navy nuclear submarines with instructions on whether or not to retaliate against a devastating nuclear attack on Britain.

Sir Keir Starmer is asked if he has given any thought to what he would write, and he replies that his commitment to the nuclear deterrent is "absolute".

But he says the "circumstances" of the use of nuclear weapons is "a matter of high confidentiality" and we should not expect someone who is serious about being PM to disclose them.

Next to ask a question of Sir Keir Starmer is Sky News political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh .

She puts to him that 100 creatives have signed a letter urging him to halt UK arms sales to Israel if he becomes PM to "end the UK's complicity in war crimes".

She notes that Sir Keir has said he wants to see the government's internal legal advice on Israel's complicity with international law, but she asks if he believes in the moral case for stopping arms sales given his concerns about what is happening in Gaza.

The Labour leader replies that the "scenes in Gaza are horrifying, particularly in relation to Rafah", which is why a ceasefire is the "number one priority".

He says there have been too many deaths, aid is "desperately needed", and Israelis are still being held hostage by Hamas.

Sir Keir says he has already been speaking to the UK's allies about the process towards a ceasefire so they can be ready for if they enter government.

On arms sales, he tells Serena that it is "for the government, obviously, to review the licences", but he has "been pressing for them to disclose that legal advice" and says he would request fresh advice if he becomes PM.

Next, Sir Keir Starmer is asked about the shadow foreign secretary and the deputy party leader having voted against the UK having nuclear weapons just eight years ago, and if he has spoken to the pair about that.

He replies: "I lead this party, I've changed this party. If we're privileged to come in to serve, I will be the prime minister of the United Kingdom, and I've made my commitment to this absolutely clear.

"I've got my whole shadow cabinet behind me on this. We have changed the Labour Party.

"I know full well that national security, defence of our country is the number one issue."

The Labour leader is taking questions from journalists, and he is asked by the BBC if, as PM, he would authorise the firing of nuclear weapons if needed.

Sir Keir Starmer replies that the nuclear deterrent is "fundamental" and "a vital part of our defence".

"Of course, that means we have to be prepared to use it."

He adds: "Nobody who aspires to be prime minister would set out the circumstances in which it would be used - that would be irresponsible."

Sir Keir is also asked if Labour has really changed on defence, noting that both the shadow foreign secretary and the deputy party leader voted against the UK having nuclear weapons just eight years ago.

He repeats that it is a "changed Labour Party", and adds: "The most important thing is that I voted in favour of the nuclear deterrent."

He says his "commitment to the nuclear deterrent is absolute".

The Labour leader has just delivered a speech in Greater Manchester on national security and the UK's nuclear deterrent.

Here is what he said, as he said it:

  • Sir Keir Starmer opens by remembering the "bravery" and "courage" of the soldiers who served on D-Day and "brought liberation to Europe";
  • He echoes the PM's language, saying the world "is perhaps more dangerous and volatile than at any time since then", which is a "shock" for his generation that remembers the feeling when the Berlin Wall came down;
  • He says the moment Russia invaded Ukraine is "when I understood the post-war era is over and a new age of insecurity has begun";
  • Sir Keir reiterates the message of his "changed Labour Party" since the Corbyn era, declaring "national security will always come first";
  • Turning to politics, the Labour leader says he tried to not make national security a political issue, but accused the Tories of having "questioned this Labour Party's commitment to national security", and declares: "I will not let that stand";
  • He says the UK has to be "fit to fight", and adds that Labour is "totally committed to the security of our nation, to our armed forces, and importantly, to our nuclear deterrent";
  • He says Labour will maintain the UK's at-sea deterrent, fund all future upgrades, and oversee the construction of four new nuclear submarines in Barrow-in-Furness;
  • Sir Keir also recommits to spending up to 2.5% of GDP on defence "as soon as possible" - but does not say when that will be;
  • He closes by saying national security is "not a party political issue - it is a national issue".

The shadow defence secretary is first to speak about Labour's plans to keep the UK secure.

John Healey opens by saying that when Sir Keir Starmer first appointed him to the role, he told him: "John, never again will Labour go into an election not trusted on national security."

He says Labour has "deep pride" in helping with the UK's defence, noting that the party helped established NATO after the Second World War, as well as the nuclear deterrent.

He declares that "Labour is now the party of defence", saying the party has changed since the Jeremy Corbyn era - which really seems to be the key message of today.

Mr Healey says a total of 14 ex-forces members will be standing for Labour on 4 July, which is a record.

The shadow defence secretary commits to spending up to 2.5% of GDP on defence - but does not say when that will be met.

Will packed airlines actually make any money this year.

MIAMI, FLORIDA - JULY 20: An American Airlines plane takes off from the Miami International Airport ... [+] on July 20, 2023 in Miami, Florida. The company reported a record quarterly revenue of $14.1 billion, a 4.7% increase from the prior year. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

Record-breaking numbers of passengers are traveling this summer. On the Friday before Memorial Day, universally considered the kick-off to summer, almost 3 million people were screened at U.S. airports.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said May 24 beat the previous airport-packing record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, screening 2.95 million people “Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!” the TSA tweeted triumphantly. “We recommend arriving early.”

For this summer, estimates are that 271 million travelers will fly US airlines between June 1 and August 31, smashing the record of 255 million set last summer.

World-wide, airlines are projected to carry 4.7 billion passengers in 2024, finally breaking the pre-COVID 2019 record of 4.5 billion. Airline revenue is expected to rise 7.6% to a record $964 billion in 2024, something that won’t surprise anyone who has priced airline tickets this year.

So with all this good news, why did American Airlines plunge 14% in the stock market this week? For that matter, why are US airline stocks still far from their five-year highs, mostly reached in 2019 and early 2020?

The same IATA report that noted that world airline revenues would reach almost a trillion dollars ($964 billion) in 2024 said that airline profits would reach only a tiny fraction of that. Airline net profits for 2024 were projected at just $25.7 billion, or 2.7% of the net profit margin.

‘godzilla minus one’ is coming to netflix this weekend, but there’s a catch, sudden u s dollar collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price gold flip as countries go dual currency.

“While the recovery is impressive, a net profit margin of 2.7% is far below what investors in almost any other industry would accept,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General in December 2023. “The average airlines will retain just $5.45 for every passenger carried. That’s about enough to buy a basic ‘grande latte’ at a London Starbucks. But it is far too little to build a future that is resilient.”

Walsh pointed to “onerous regulation, fragmentation, high infrastructure costs and a supply chain populated with oligopolies.” This was clearly a dig at the Boeing/Airbus airliner manufacturing duopoly. While Boeing’s manufacturing problems with the 737MAX are well-known, Airbus also has a significant backlog for its A321 family.

We spoke with Savanthi Syth, CFA, Managing Director for Global Airlines & Advanced Air Mobility at Raymond James this week. She noted, “At the heart of the matter is that costs have risen sharply, and fares haven’t kept up despite strong demand recovery, [with leisure travel above 2019 and business travel back to 2019 levels] due to oversupply relative to the new cost structure.”

Ms. Syth added, “Airline labor costs have risen dramatically, and fuel is higher than 2019. These are the two biggest cost components for U.S. airlines, accounting for more than half. In addition, air traffic control (ATC) staffing shortages have led to operational inefficiencies and aircraft parts supply chain issues have led to delivery delays and extended maintenance times that are also driving up costs.”

American Airlines, for example, posted record-breaking revenues of $12.6 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2024, but still recorded a loss of more than $300 million, primarily driven by operational costs.

This week, American stock plunged 14% after the airline changed guidance to reflect a unit revenue cut.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom noted on a webcast that American’s unit revenue cut was from a “combination of softer domestic environment and American’s performance within that environment,” according to a Raymond James note.

After the revenue cut announcement, CEO Robert Isom fired the airline's Chief Commercial Officer, Vasu Raja. A Bain & Co. report pointed to issues with his "modern retailing" strategy, which sought to move customers away from booking through travel agencies and towards direct bookings on American's website and app.

American cut back its sales department, as part of this strategy, but the urge to trim travel agencies out of the picture was apparently not a success. The Bain report commissioned by American highlighted concerns from corporate travel advisers about the impact of the shift. As Simple Flying put it, “American Airlines Shot Itself In The Foot” with its distribution strategy.

Stockholders of many US airlines are unhappy, with most US airlines nowhere near their five-year highs. American Airlines stock has suffered since the pandemic, dropping from a high of 33.79 on July 17, 2019, to just 11.44 on May 30, 2024. Southwest Airlines also trades at less than half of its five-year high. Southwest reached 63.42 in April 2021, and closed at 26.84 on May 31, 2024. Even industry darling Delta, trading around 50 this week, has yet to reach its January 2020 high of 59.

As Helane Becker, managing director and senior research analyst at TD Cowen puts it, “The issue isn't one of demand.”

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 24: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-752 arrives at Los Angeles International ... [+] Airport during Memorial Day weekend on May 24, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by AaronP/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images)

According to Becker, “In American's case, they are managing costs well, but the revenue is weaker because of excess capacity in a lot of their markets. They are the smallest of the three largest airlines in international travel. They focus on domestic, and that's an issue for them right now, when there are too many seats in markets they fly.”

Becker believes that “people travel differently now than they did prior to 2020.” For the airlines, which means “strong demand during the peaks but demand during off-peak periods is less robust.”

“Summer will be strong, but there is a shift away from domestic travel to international travel,” Becker predicts. She says that in Latin America and Europe, a lot of new industry capacity has come in . “European airlines have restored capacity on the North Atlantic and LATAM and Avianca emerged from Chapter 11 and are growing again. This has resulted in more choices for consumers and the result has been lower fares” internationally.

Norse Atlantic , for example, is offering non-stop flights from the US to Europe starting at $239, which also drives down the fares of competitors.

Ms. Syth of Raymond James notes, “Strength in premium demand (due to better yield improvements in that segment as well as increase product availability and merchandizing by airlines) is helping airlines that have a premium offering relative to those that do not.”

So airlines with significant investment in First and Business Class products like Delta and United, which recently reiterated its profit guidance, are doing relatively well in the stock market, while all-economy class Southwest currently trades at less than half of its five-year high.

Passengers sit in first class aboard a United Airlines flight to Houston, Texas from San Francisco ... [+] on May 11, 2020. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Will continuing strong demand ultimately translate to airline profits and smiling stockholders? The third-quarter post-summer report card may reveal if the profitless recovery will come to an end.
