If you haven’t been to Ohio’s national park yet, you need to! The nearly 33,000-acre park has an abundance of beautiful hiking trails with varying difficulties (more than 125 miles worth) – all so very close to Cleveland.  

If you’re backpacking the state-wide Buckeye Trail, it intersects the park. Make sure to spend some time exploring other areas of Cuyahoga National Park.

Family-friendly activities include traversing through the park on a scenic train ride , picnicking, paddling the river, fishing at Kendall Lake, joining one of the park’s group education or excursion events, and snowshoeing in winter.

Holden Arboretum in Kirtland Ohio

You’ll see some of the most beautiful gardens in Ohio at the 3,500-acre Holden Arboretum . The arboretum is divided into several sections, each featuring different plant and animal life and cared for to maintain the native habitat. 

The Holden Wildflower Garden shows off the beauty of Ohio’s native plants. Spot graceful butterflies and hummingbirds in the peaceful Holden Butterfly Garden. Walk through the tree tops and across a bridge 65 feet above the ground on the Murch Canopy Walk.

Tour the Stan Hywet Hall and Garden s, a historic estate that’s one of the largest in the US. The National Historic Landmark was once the home of the co-founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The beautiful mansion is one of the best Ohio spots to visit around Christmas time, as they adorn the manor with festive decorations. 

Visit the Akron Art Museum , where you’ll find a fantastic collection of modern and contemporary art. The building’s architecture itself is a work of art. 

A couple of other family-friendly destinations include the Akron Zoo and the historic Hale Farm and Village .

The J.M. Smucker Co. Store and Cafe in Orrville Ohio

1-hour drive from Cleveland

Visit the Smucker’s flagship store and cafe to buy unique products from one of America’s most-known and loved brands (they’ve been in operation for more than 120 years). 

The store has for sale from their family of brands a variety of jams and jellies, coffee, peanut butter, pet gifts, kitchen accessories, clothing, and custom gift baskets, too.

Aside from the gift shop and souvenirs, visitors can also have a meal in the cafe. The Smucker Co. Store and Cafe gives you a sense of wholesome Americana while being just an hour away from Cleveland.

Sip through Ohio’s Wine Country in Ashtabula County Ohio

Just an hour from Cleveland is the scenic Ohio Wine Country . Have a glass at any (or all) of Ashtabula County’s over 30 wineries. Most of these Ohio wineries have vineyards to explore along with tasting rooms.

Some of the best Ohio wineries include Debonne Vineyards (if you like beer, they also have a microbrewery), Harpersfield Vineyards, Laurentia Vineyard and Winery, M Cellars, and Cask 307 (try their delicious charcuterie and cheese). 

If wine isn’t your thing, there are many idyllic, covered bridges in Ashtabula County. The nearly 230-foot-long Harpersfield Covered Bridge is a local favorite; it reaches across the Grand River. Sit down at the nearby park along the river bank and admire the view. 

Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio

1-hour and 15-minute drive from Cleveland

If you’re a lover of all things paranormal, you won’t want to miss this Ohio day trip from Cleveland. Tour the “haunted” former Mansfield Reformatory during one of their tours or ghost hunts; they also offer The Haunted Prison Experience around Halloween time. 

Its chillingly beautiful exterior and architecture coupled with a dark history draws in visitors from Ohio and from throughout the US. The Ohio State Reformatory first opened in 1896 and is now nearing 130 years old.

Movie buffs will also want to visit the Ohio State Reformatory. It was the primary filming location of the award-winning 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption .

Visit Sandusky Ohio

Sandusky is, of course, famous for Cedar Point – the Roller Coaster Capital. The Ohio amusement park has been open since 1870 and is the second-oldest operating in the United States. It’s the perfect spot for thrill seekers with 16 roller coasters, a water park, and more.

Indulge at One Hot Cookie ! You can’t miss the cute, pink and white trailer that’s home to delectable desserts like the Cherry Cheesecake Cookie or the Death by Chocolate Cookie. If you have a late-night craving, you’re in luck; on Friday and Saturday, they’re open until 2:30 AM. 

Toast at Whistle and Keg . Spend the evening out at this brewery and beer hall with a ton of craft beers on tap. Top-rated pours include CRYOHIO, an imperial IPA from Fat Head’s Brewery; Most Excellent Razberry Limeade, a mead from Crafted Artisan Meadery; and Gumballhead, a wheat beer from 3 Floyds Brewing.

Relax and enjoy the outdoors at Mill Creek Park . Inside the park are also the beautiful Fellows Riverside Gardens and Lanterman’s Mill , which was constructed in the 1840s.

Take a Trip to Amish Country in Holmes County Ohio

1-hour and 30-minute drive from Cleveland

Just a short drive from Cleveland is the world’s largest Amish and Mennonite community! If you embark on this Ohio day trip from Cleveland, there are a few stops you simply have to make. 

Educate yourself about their culture and unique community at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage/Behalt Center , or at Yoder’s Amish Home . 

Immerse yourself in the slow-living communities of Walnut Creek, Farmerstown, and Charm (yes, it’s charming there), where you can shop, dine, and take in the scenery. Check out the local bakeries and produce stands for deliciously fresh baked goods and produce. 

Ohio Amish Country is also known for its beautiful expanses of rolling hills and farmland; for this reason, many Holmes County roads are designated as scenic byways.

P.S. The world’s largest cuckoo clock is in Sugarcreek (in the neighboring Tuscarawas County).

Escape to Kelleys Island Ohio

Kelleys Island is the perfect getaway for those embarking on an Ohio day trip . 

For the easiest (and most fun) way to get around the popular island, rent a golf cart or bike after getting off the ferry. Take a ride and you’ll find some shops and restaurants, hiking trails, sandy beaches, and fantastic views of Lake Erie.

One of the island’s most unique sights is the glacial grooves, which are the biggest in the world at 400 feet long by 35 feet wide and up to 10 feet deep. These Ice Age remnants are an extraordinary National Natural Landmark .

Other things to do on Kelleys Island include kayak rentals and tours, exploring Kelleys Island State Park , touring the Kelleys Island Historical Association museum , and admiring the artwork of the Charles Herndon Sculpture Garden and Galleries . 

Visit German Village in Columbus Ohio

2-hour and 15-minute drive from Cleveland

German Village is one of Ohio’s destinations on the National Register of Historic Places. The lovely neighborhood has quaint, brick buildings and idyllic scenery along with fantastic food, culture, and things to do. 

For foodies: have an ice cream cone filled with Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks at Jeni’s Ice Cream , or indulge in decadent fudge while you watch it being made at Schmidt’s Fudge Haus . 

Art lovers can enjoy the Umbrella Girl fountain at the historic Schiller Park , or the contemporary and historic art collection at Keny Galleries .

Catch a production at Actor’s Theater of Columbus , or if you’d rather snuggle up with a book, visit The Book Loft — a massive haven for literature-lovers housed within an old general store, saloon, and other historic buildings.

Explore Attractions in Put-In-Bay Ohio

Put-In-Bay is one of our favorite Ohio day trips from Cleveland. There are so many unique things to do in this Ohio city nestled on a Lake Erie island.

One of the top destinations is Crystal Cave , where you can explore the inside of the world’s largest celestite geode. Yes, you can actually stand and walk inside it—the 12,000-15,000-year-old geode is 35 feet in diameter. Adults can also visit the accompanying historic Heineman Winery , which has been in operation since the 1800s.

Other Put-In-Bay attractions include Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center, the Butterfly House, South Bass Island State Park, Stonehenge Estate, the Chocolate Museum, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, and the adult-friendly The Sand Bar. 

The Olander Park System in Sylvania Ohio

The Olander Park System is one of the top family-friendly Ohio day trips from Cleveland. Their parks are spread throughout Sylvania and include Fossil Park, Sylvan Prairie Park, Whetstone Park, Olander Park, and Southview Oak Savanna. 

Some of their parks include unique features. Sylvan Prairie Park is a lovely area that’s being rehabilitated to restore the vitality of the natural prairie and wetland environments; visitors can bike, walk, skate, jog, fish, and sled at the park during wintertime. 

Their Fossil Park is one of two great Devonian Era sites in the world. Visitors of all ages can dig for (and take home!) fossilized remains of over 200 different species of prehistoric life, including coral and brachiopods. 

The Wilds in Cumberland Ohio

2-hour and 30-minute drive from Cleveland

The Wilds isn’t just any old Ohio zoo . Visit the nonprofit park and conservation center to experience a safari adventure and see wild animals up close. Even though it’s a short drive from Cleveland Ohio , it’ll feel like you’re on the Savannah thousands of miles away.

This popular destination also offers other outdoor activities, including fishing, horseback riding, and for thrill-seekers, zip-lining. If you want to extend your day trip , you can stay at one of their cabins or check out WildNights at the Outpost (a camping experience outdoors near exotic animals, like giraffes and rhinos).

Ohio Caverns in West Liberty Ohio

2-hour and 45-minute drive from Cleveland

Did you know that the largest caves in Ohio are only a couple of hours from Cleveland? 

The Ohio Caverns feature over 2 miles of passageways and a variety of rock formations and colors, including stalactites and stalagmites. Crystal King’s Cave features one of the biggest stalactites in the world—it’s about 400 pounds and five feet long. 

The caverns are open year-round and are explorable by guided tour. There are several types of tours including the Natural Wonder Tour, Historic Tour, Winter Tour (Oct 1-April 30), and the Limestone Tour.

The caves stay about 54 degrees year-round, so make sure to wear a light jacket and sneakers when you visit, even in July!

Clifton Mill in Clifton Ohio

3-hour drive from Cleveland

The historic Clifton Mill is one of the largest, still-standing, water-powered grist mills. Originally built in 1802, the site has since expanded to include an idyllic covered bridge, an American restaurant, Country Store, and vintage gas station with Americana charm. 

The nostalgic 1940s Gas Station Museum is still stocked with original products and authentic relics from the era. Walk across the covered bridge for fantastic views of the Clifton Mill, Clifton Gorge, and the Little Miami River waterfalls.

You’re in for a treat if you visit during the winter, as the property goes all out with Christmas decorations. The whole family will enjoy their display of over 4 million twinkling, festive lights!

Idle-Hour Ranch in Troy Ohio

3-hour and 15-minute drive from Cleveland

Idle-Hour Ranch is a family-owned farm in Ohio with a diverse array of activities. Aside from the farm, their zoo features animals of all shapes and sizes from camels to kangaroos and even anteaters. Plus, you can feed the kangaroos and take a ride on a horse or camel!

The Ranch also offers gem and fossil mining and a gift shop. If you want to extend your stay, you can camp overnight in genuine tipis. 

It’s a great Ohio day trip from Cleveland especially during the fall months when they host bonfires, hayrides, and a fun, six-acre corn maze. 

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan Ohio

Hocking Hills is a treasured Ohio state park with beautiful scenery and diverse flora and fauna. It’s received international acclaim for its waterfalls, caves, idyllic cliffs, gorges, and native wildflowers.

Visitors can hike and explore some of Hocking Hills’ various caves including Ash Cave, Old Man’s Cave, and Whispering Cave. Other famous trails showcase Cantwell Cliffs and Cedar Falls, the latter of which features grottos, waterfalls, blankets of hemlock, and tall rock walls.

Other things to do at the park include disc golf, camping, hunting, and fishing. You can also tag along on one of the park’s regularly scheduled group outings that feature activities like archery, kayaking, and family-friendly educational classes.

With waterfalls that drop more than 160 feet, it’s no wonder that it’s a revered, natural landmark and stunningly beautiful. One of the falls, Horseshoe Falls, is the most powerful in all of North America.

Tour guides focus on educating visitors on the history and geology of the cave as you walk through and spy a variety of incredible formations.

Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City

A tour of Marvel Cave, which sits underneath  Silver Dollar City, takes visitors down about 500 feet below the surface on a one-hour guided trek. You’ll see a massive  cathedral room and lots of cool formations in this wet limestone cave. As you learn about the  colorful history of the cave and the park, you’ll get a thigh workout because there are a ton  of stairs here!

Smallin Civil War Cave With its super-wide mouth, Smallin Civil War Cave has one of the prettiest entrances around. Make sure you visit after a rain, so you can see a stream trickling over the rocks and out of the mouth of the cave. A guided tour filled with information about the area’s indigenous  people and the cave’s history takes visitors along a boardwalk for an easy and flat trek.

Fantastic Caverns This is the only cave on our list where you ride through on a Jeep-pulled tram instead of walking through. That means it’s great for  visitors who might struggle on an hour-long and sometimes steep walk. You’ll hear fun history (like how the cave was discovered by a local farmer’s dog) as you travel through wide spaces filled with stunning formations.

An adjacent law office, also designed by Wright, was incorporated into the hotel to allow for 27 boutique hotel rooms. There’s also a wonderful restaurant and downstairs lounge. But The Park Inn isn’t the only Wright-related architectural draw. Many of his students designed homes in the Prairie School style and they are scattered throughout Mason City. An easy-to-follow driving tour map is available from the visitor’s center. Mason City is also home to Meredith Wilson who wrote The Music Man . In my perfect world, I could pack my bags, hop in the car and drive to my destination without any planning! However, planning is vital in ensuring you make the most of your trip. Especially when trying to head up to Put-In-Bay.; you don’t want to miss that ferry!!

Here are a few things to consider while putting together weekend trips from Cincinnati:

The Weather

The season you are traveling in can make a difference in pricing, activities, and events. Cincinnati locals are familiar with it being 20 degrees in the morning and 68 degrees that afternoon. Winter weather can close many hiking trails in Hocking Hills, while the 4th of July weekend is one of the busiest for amusement parks such as Cedar Point.

Weekend trips from Cincinnati don’t have to break the bank. Many nearby destinations offer an abundance of free activities. Depending on your traveling party’s number of people, things can get pricey quickly. If there is a particular destination or hotel you are looking at staying at, start following them on social media or sign up for their newsletters to receive discounts or deals. For example, the Mohican’s Treehouse Resort will offer last-minute treehouse deals at half the cost!

We enjoyed learning about the elephants, including why their daily baths are so important. The elephant’s caretaker was extremely knowledgeable, offering us fun facts about the elephants, “Cindy and Vicky.”

Kids even have the chance to participate in helping care for these gentle giants with options to help scrub, rinse, or paint toenails. Lucky for us, we were the only family, so we got to do it all!

Tips For The Wilstem Elephant Spa

• This experience is two hours long and includes an elephant educational program.
• The elephant’s caretaker will give detailed instructions on where to stand, what to do, etc.
• Wear closed-toe shoes.
• You will likely get wet but not soaked.
• There is a bathroom available.
• They feed the elephant animals crackers as part of their training. You may want to bring a pack for your kids as a snack.

Go Hiking At Hocking Hills State Park

One of our favorite weekend trips from Cincinnati is to Hocking Hills. Deemed one of Ohio’s most scenic state parks, Hocking Hills is full of cascading waterfalls, rugged gorges, sheer rock walls, and towering cliffs. Whether it is a kid-friendly trail or a more thrilling hike, our list of the best hikes in Hocking Hills has something for every type of hiker.

A few of our favorites are Cedar Falls, Old Man’s Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, and the Rock House . Try the paved trails at Ash Cave, and Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve with kids in tow.

I found that Kalahari is great for older kids and teens compared to Ohio’s other indoor water parks. There are more thrilling attractions and slides for them to do. Adventure Cove is a popular area in the zoo offering amusement rides such as a wooden roller coaster, swings, bumper boats, and more. Guests can purchase a Zoo More wristband to enjoy all the rides throughout the zoo, including those at Adventure Cove.

Zoombezi Bay is a waterpark full of waterslides, a lazy river, a kid’s splash area, and a 21+ Lazy River called Croctail Creek. Cocktail Creek allows adults to float with alcoholic beverages. 

Planning Tip: Admission to Zoombezi Bay also includes admission to the Columbus Zoo. The zoo offers two-day tickets because there is so much to see and do! Remember that attractions such as rides in Adventure Cove, rides throughout the zoo, and special animal programs require an additional charge.

Maumee Bay State Park and Lodge

One of the best weekend trips from Cincinnati is a visit to Maumee Bay State Park. The park is 1,450 acres, with excellent birdwatching in the wetlands, bike trails, a golf course, and fishing. Go Visit Indy

Best Getaway near Denver: Aspen, three hours by car

Book Aspen Meadows starting at $174 per night

Denver offers urban gratification, but no visit to Colorado is complete without experiencing the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. COVID status and policies:  This hotel is currently open and accepting reservations and announced new procedures that include:

• No more than 50% capacity for both guest rooms and restaurants.
• All rooms are guaranteed to be empty for a minimum of 24 hours prior to each new guest's arrival.
• Room assignments will be staggered in order to ensure common entryways are not shared.
• Some amenities have been removed from the rooms and are available upon request. These include bath amenities, hairdryers, kitchenware, iron/ironing boards, robes, and stationary. Newspapers will not be available until further notice but local news is available online.

Cons: There are typically many families with kids, so it's not the best spot for a romantic holiday. This hotel is seasonal and will be closed from November through May.

• Guests from any hotspot state may be required to certify that they have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of their arrival date. To certify, guests will be asked to sign a Certification of Compliance form upon arrival at the property.
• Programming will including take-out, picnic-style, safe dine-in options, and al fresco dining on the deck. Yoga will be held outside.
• Spa services, the fitness center, hot tubs and the debut of the new restaurant, Whiteclover, have been temporarily deferred. The oceanfront pool is in service.
• The hotel has adopted rigorous cleaning and hygiene measures developed in consultation with state, CDC, and global public health authorities. Antibacterial hand-sanitization stations are offered around the resort, and face coverings are encouraged in common areas.

Best Getaway near Miami: Duck Key, two hours and fifteen minutes by car

Joshua Tree National Park lies 140 miles east of sprawling Los Angeles. It's a desert oasis with captivating light, intriguing giant boulders, wildflowers, and hardy plants, including the wild-armed namesake Joshua Tree. There's a picnic area with outdoor furniture, and the former movie sets of Pioneertown are now home to art studios and one-off shops, including a vintage saddle maker.

Pros: The untamed desert vibe is authentic, complete with surreal sunsets and respected live music venue Pappy and Harriet's is only minutes away. Much more personality than chain motels that are the major alternatives in the area.

Cons: No televisions on-site, though Wi-Fi works well. 

• In addition to the recommended additional sanitization and safety recommendations from the CDC, the hotel installed a plexiglass screen to the welcome desk and implemented key sanitization on arrival.
• Check-in will be done with limited contact including room key sanitization.
• A touchpad will be used for all transactions and hand sanitizer is abundantly available.
• All employees wear masks and comply with temperature checks on arrival.
• The restaurant Pappy and Harriet's is open for dine-in and takeout and generously-spaced outdoor seating is available.

Best getaway near Houston: Hill Country, four hours by car

Guests share the grounds with an abundance of songbirds, hiking and biking trails, a pool with a lazy river, an 18-hole golf course, and horseback riding. The spa has 18 treatment rooms and features homegrown music throughout, in a nod to the state's rich music history.

Pros: The inn's rambling outdoor spaces and many recreational options are an upscale Texas experience.

On the main island, bask in the sun, swim in the crystalline sea, drink rum swizzles at The Swizzle Inn , make your own scent at the Lili Bermuda Perfumery , visit natural wonders like The Blue Hole Park, and finish off the five-star visit with a stay at a five-star hotel. Lake Placid is another farther-flung location, but it’s well worth the journey if you want to enjoy a year-round outdoor destination. In the spring, summer, and fall, visitors will be delighted to find a dazzling array of outdoor activities, from hiking through  High Falls Gorge , a 22-acre nature park boasting four waterfalls, to taking a dip in the 128-acre Mirror Lake . 

Of course, this place is also a winter paradise – famed for hosting the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Powder hounds can get their adrenaline rush on the slopes of  Whiteface Mountain , which offers 22 miles of terrain for skiing and snowboarding. 

Start at least one day with a hearty plate of eggs, a breakfast sandwich, or the decadent French toast fondue from  The Breakfast Club, Etc . And for later-in-the-day fare, look no further than  Smoke Signals , a BBQ joint with finger-licking brisket, ribs, and pulled pork.

Check into the  The Lake Placid Stagecoach Inn , a delightful boutique inn housed in a building from the 1700s that still boasts plenty of historical charm. 

17. The Poconos, Pennsylvania: 2-Hour Drive

The Pocono Mountains are another delightful outdoorsy destination prime for getting out of the city. Come here for a little family fun like visiting  Camelback Mountain , a massive adventure park that will leave kids and kids at heart smiling from ear to ear. There’s also the  Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which will zip you through the stunning local scenery, and  miles upon miles of hiking  through old-growth forests in the Poconos trail system. 

Remember, The Poconos cover about 2,400 square miles, so plan your dining according to the area you want to visit. A couple of not-to-miss spots in the region include Wilkes-Barre's  Cork Bar and Restaurant , serving seafood with an Italian twist (think roasted red pepper gnocchi shrimp and shrimp and crab bolognese), along with  Native  in Honesdale, an upscale eatery focusing on dishes made from locally sourced produce. 

Lay your head at any number of area hotels. Among the best are  Cove Haven Resort , a kitschy, old-school, couples-only hotel famed for its heart-shaped tubs, and  Woodloch Resort , a family-friendly resort where all ages can have fun in the great outdoors. 

18. Washington, Connecticut: 2-Hour Drive

Find rural bliss just two hours outside the city with a visit to Washington, Connecticut, where verdant landscapes are abundant but so too are the cultural attractions. Dive deep into the region at the  Institute For American Indian Studies , which traces the lives of Indigenous peoples back more than 10,000 years. Get your fill of fresh air at the  Hollister House Garden , a massive green space open in the spring and summer to showcase the local blooms, and get a taste of something locally brewed at  Hopkins Vineyard , a heritage farm that produces award-winning wines. 

Then, dig into more local favorites at The 202 Tavern , serving classic American food made by local purveyors, and  G.W. Tavern , whose menu features comforting classics like French onion soup and chicken wings. 

The area may not have a lot of accommodations, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for with pure quality. 19. North Fork, New York: 2-Hour Drive

Escape to the North Fork, New York whenever you need a Long Island getaway without all the pomp and circumstance. Just two hours from the city (traffic permitting), this is the spot to be for a beach day, a great glass of wine, and a little farm-style fun. You really can’t go wrong at any of its beaches, but great options include  Wildwood State Park , which also includes a 600-acre forest, and  Orient Beach State Park at the end of North Fork.

According to Hannah Walhout, a former senior editor at T+L, "This part of Long Island was always a sleepy place — worlds away from the big-money scene of the nearby Hamptons. But these days, more and more city dwellers are making the trek, drawn by the peninsula’s rolling coastline, rambling vineyards, and hyper-local gastronomy."

After basking in the sun, head to the waterfront  Kontokosta Winery to enjoy panoramic views of Long Island Sound with your vino. Don't leave without stopping by  8 Hands Farm  for farm store goodies to take back home. For more food,  The Halyard  has locally sourced produce and fresh-caught fish, and  Bruce & Son  is beloved for its all-day brunch.

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

3. Put-In-Bay, OH

Clocking in at just over three hours from Columbus, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. You’ll take a ferry to the island and find live music, nightlife, great shopping and food, as well as plenty of things to keep you busy! Rent a golf cart to tour the island in style! If the party atmosphere isn’t your style, take the ferry over to nearby Kelleys Island for a more peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

4. Pittsburgh, PA

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

5. Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

6. Detroit, MI

Everything you think you know about Detroit – might very well be totally wrong. Despite the bad reputation it often seems to get, Detroit has got a lot of cool things to see and experience. Several years ago, I spent a few days downtown and walked around after dark by myself – never once feeling uneasy. If you love sports – they’ve got hockey, football, baseball, and basketball. They have a terrific restaurant scene and some really terrific hotels. Be sure to check out the incredible music history of Detroit with a tour of Motown and and a visit to the nearby Henry Ford Museum in the town of Dearborn – one of the coolest museums in America!

7. Fort Wayne, IN

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.  

8. Indianapolis, IN

Indianapolis was one of the first cities I explored when I started this website back in 2013.  Obviously, it’s famous for hosting the Indy 500 and a tour of the famous speedway is a must when you visit.  But Indy is great for more than just race cars.  Start with a look at the famous Monument Circle downtown and work your way to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis – hands down the greatest museum for families in the country. It’s amazing!  Check out the beautiful  canal  walk that runs through White River State Park, or go for some  Duck Pin  bowling in Fountain Square.  History buffs can check out Benjamin Harrison’s house, and if you’re a foodie – Indy is loaded with great restaurants!

9. Babcock State Park – Clifftop, WV

If you’re looking for a low-key adventure in the great outdoors – this is an amazing state park in West Virginia. Check out my article on visiting Babcock State Park – where you can rent a small cabin and have a front row seat to beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and other outdoor recreation. The old mill and waterfall in the park is awesome for pictures and you never know what kind of wildlife you’ll get to see!

10. Holland, MI

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it. 

11. Pigeon Forge, TN

Pigeon Forge clocks in at right about six hours from Columbus making it the longest road trip idea on our list. However, it’s worth every minute if you love the beautiful views of the Smoky Mountains. Pigeon Forge is loaded with family friendly activities and shows – from comedy to magic and country music. Take the kids on go-carts or mini-golf and enjoy some adult fun while you chill around the fountains at The Island at Pigeon Forge. It goes without saying to make time to explore Smoky Mountain National Park.

12. Nashville, TN

Nashville is just under six hours from Columbus and an awesome destination for an extended road trip! Even if you are not a fan of country music – there is a lot to love about Music City. Broadway is rockin all night with fun bars and take your pic of exciting museums dedicated to great performers: Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Glen Campbell, and others. Don’t miss an exact replica of the Parthenon not far from downtown and some incredible southern restaurants!

13. Owensboro, KY

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even  tour his childhood home .

14. Springfield, IL

If you’re a history buff – a visit to Springfield, Illinois will be a memorable road trip experience. Illinois’ capital city was the where Abraham Lincoln lived before he became president and where his tomb is located. You can see the law office where he worked in his younger days and where he served as a state legislator. Springfield also the incredible Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library as well as some really great Route 66 history!

15. Dayton, OH

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

16. Cambridge, OH

The sweet treats at Kennedy’s Bakery is alone worth the road trip to small town Cambridge. Only a 90 minute drive from Columbus – enjoy a nice weekend getaway with small town shopping, some outdoor recreation at Salt Fork State Park, or a trip to The Wild’s animal experience a short drive from town. The holidays are best as this little town really dazzles with lights and charm!

17. Louisville, KY

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously. 

18. Cincinnati, OH

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums –  The American Sign Museum  is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

19. Maumee Bay Lodge

Maumee Bay Lodge offers 120 guest rooms, each with private balcony overlooking the Maumee Bay of Lake Erie. Guests can enjoy the full-service dining room, cocktail lounge and snack bar. 20. Chicago, Illinois

The Windy City is full of world class museums and fine dining. Take in the views from the Willis Tower – formerly the tallest building in America, take a river cruise to learn about Chicago history and architecture, or book a Chicago Pizza Tour to enjoy the many delicious styles of Chicago pizza including its best known style – deep dish!

Due in part to its ease of access as a day trip from Florence or Siena, located 27 km to the southeast, the town has long captured the attention of tourists who see it as a “Medieval Manhattan.”

Remarkably impressive, impeccably kept, charmingly rustic, and adorned with an exquisite collection of frescoes, San Gimignano is everything that is promised. Although the town sees a surge of visitors during the summer, it is a delightful place to explore and could be one of the reasons Italy is ranked second in the world, behind New Zealand, for sheer natural beauty.

Things to Do: Wander through the narrow streets, visit the Collegiate Church and its stunning frescoes, and climb the Torre Grossa for panoramic views. What to Eat: Sample the local specialties, such as the famous white Vernaccia wine, saffron-infused dishes, and delectable gelato. You can find some excellent local wines at Ristorante Dorando or Cum Quibus. Where to Stay: For an authentic experience, consider staying in La Cisterna Hotel or Hotel Bel Soggiorno.

Val d’Orcia (2 hours drive)

The Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is a picturesque valley in Tuscany, just 2 hours from Florence, famous for its rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and medieval villages. The Val d’Orcia extends from San Quirico d’Orcia to the Lago di Bolsena and the Lazio border. Beautiful landscape, the area is dotted with fortifications dating from the seventh century, when the Via Francigena, which runs through the valley, was an important route leading north of Rome.

The first main draw is the amazing Bagno Vignoni Medicean sulfur baths. If you have a car or a bike, you may drive south from here to the monastery of San Salvatore, which is the center of medieval power in the area. Make sure to take a detour to the incredibly beautiful Radicofani.

Things to Do: Explore charming towns like Pienza and Montalcino, take a scenic drive through the countryside, and visit wineries to sample the renowned Brunello di Montalcino wine. What to Eat: Indulge in the region’s delicious pecorino cheese, pici pasta, and the world-famous Brunello di Montalcino wines. Where to Stay: Consider staying in a rustic agriturismo or a historic villa surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

Lucca (1.5 hours drive)

The most elegant of Tuscany’s provincial capitals, Lucca is serene without being boring. It is surrounded by a ring of Renaissance walls that are adorned with gardens and massive bastions. The city welcomes guests with ease and has a serene, independent historic center that is enjoyable to explore on your own. Being one of the few areas in Tuscany where a large number of people live on bicycles, the ancient center is surprisingly traffic-free.

There were allegedly once seventy churches in the city, and even now, you would be hard-pressed to find a five-minute stroll without encountering a charming plaza or a church building with a marble exterior. Rich in top-notch museums , one honoring the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini, the city exudes grace and a sophisticated way of life.

Things to Do: Stroll along the top of the ancient city walls, explore the picturesque piazzas, and visit the opulent Basilica of San Frediano. What to Eat: Savor the local delicacies, such as tordelli lucchesi (meat-stuffed pasta), buccellato (a sweet bread with raisins and anise), and the renowned Lucchese olive oil. Where to Stay: Consider staying in a historic palazzo or a cozy B&B within the city walls to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere.

Arezzo (1 hour drive)

You will be mesmerized by the elegance and charm of this stunning Tuscan town as soon as you arrive in Arezzo. It also has a magnificent church with some of the most exquisite stained-glass windows you will ever see.

Ok so there aren't enough reviews for this place. I get takeout from here regularly and it's so good. Get the brisket burnt ends, the macaroni and cheese, the wings. Oh my gosh. It's SO good! I can't comment on the service in house because I haven't dined in yet, but I can say at this point they haven't forgotten a single thing. The food has been good and consistent and quick! I've had some amazing BBQ all over the country- STL, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky- this is just as good.

On the former site of Underdog BBQ is Outlaw Barbecue. I thought GPS was taking me to Underdog (which I had reviewed a few years ago). I walked in and immediately noticed a difference. Where were the butcher block tables? I asked if the restaurant was under new ownership ... yes and today was opening day. Aught oh ... Of course there were some glitches. No biggies. My "chicken fingers/french fries only" guest ordered the mac and cheese. I ordered the house salad, 1/2 rack, and cornbread. Head lettuce was the main component of the salad. The Chipotle salad dressing had some unexpected zing. The 1/2 rack was seasoned well. The additional bbq sauce was chilled from the fridge so was a mismatch to the hot ribs. A steak knife would have made it easier to cut the ribs apart. The mac and cheese was over the top delicious. My 8 yr companion actually went and told the chef how good it was ... then ordered 3 servings for takeout. It was packaged for the 2 hr trip back to Pittsburgh. So once they get over opening glitches, this restaurant will be a destination for bbq. Looking forward to bring my 8 yr old companion's family back for more mac and cheese and ribs.

Fast, friendly service. Place is clean and welcoming. Food was good! We left with our bellies full and leftovers for later! Even our grumpy teens approved. Fair prices, too! Yes, this is in the location where there used to be a different BBQ place. Sounds like its a totally different business. The person who gave this place a one star review solely because he didn't read the signs literally EVERYWHERE indicating the change in business ownership and then walked out miffed, without having even eaten at the restaurant, shouldn't be allowed to give reviews. Time to start your day off right with the most important meal of the day — and trust us when we say you’re going to want a breakfast that will fuel you through every step of the Strip. Chef Ray Garcia’s ¡VIVA! hosts an excellent brunch every Saturday and Sunday that features elevated Mexican brunch favorites, in addition to boozy and bottomless beverages (we wouldn’t recommend this first thing since you’re going to have a packed day, but their Fresa Sandia is quite good if that’s the way your day is going). Get the Chorizo Con Huevos or the Chilaquiles with fresh, crispy heirloom corn tortilla chips and thank us later.

Mid-Morning

Take a stroll through the The District shopping esplanade where you’ll find 70,000 square feet of shopping in case that compact carry-on of yours couldn’t fit another clubbing shirt. The most eye-catching part of the area though is the 50-foot, LED-panel-covered Globe (affectionately called “The Orb” on our last trip) that’s definitely worth checking out. The Globe offers an immersive art experience, and you can catch a short show with synced lights and music every hour on the hour from noon to 1 a.m.

If you’re ready to fist-pump to a hot DJ set, but you also want to be in bed at a reasonable hour, slip into a swimsuit and head over to Ayu Dayclub . Resorts World’s Bali-inspired poolside party turns the weekend into a never-ending summer, with white daybeds and chic wooden cabanas you can rent if you’re not ready to pack into the pool with everyone else. Even if you’re just sipping a drink on dry land, it’s a certified vibe, and you might even get to see one of the repeat artists like Kaskade or T-Pain step up to the DJ booth.

That being said, if a “dayclub” isn’t your scene, we still suggest beating that Vegas heat and cooling off at one of the seven pools on property (including the only infinity pool on the Strip).

Early Evening

After a relaxing poolside afternoon soaking up some sun, go back to Famous Foods Street Eats and make your way to Ms. Meow’s Mamak Stall for a secret surprise. Amidst the small shop selling Asian snacks and adorned with lucky cats, ask the person behind the register at Ms. Meow’s to push the shelf-lined wall, and you can slip into the entrance of an intimate speakeasy, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den. Open daily at 4 p.m., this relaxed and cozy spot seats 34 and serves up tropical cocktails into the wee hours. Sip on the “Hanami,” a sake drink with hints of sakura for a pre-dinner cocktail and take picks by the neon tiger on the exposed brick. But be sure to come here early after opening — this buzzy bar isn’t so much of a secret anymore, and fills up fast.

Now that you’ve had a drink (or two) and are ready for a night out, start with dinner at Wally’s , a beloved transplant from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The mouthwatering charcuterie boards are a can’t-miss, filled with peppery wagyu beef salami and L’Amuse Gouda, although the baguette stuffed with brie and a staggering amount of truffles (in the honey, butter, and shaved variety) is also a great choice. And with a selection of more 100 wines by the glass, pull up a chair, sip on a rare pour, and get ready for some of the best elevated comfort food on the Strip.

Late Evening

With so many bars, lounges, and concerts at Resorts World, you’ve already got a wide range of options for wherever you want the night to take you. Resorts World Theatre might be able to accommodate 5,000, but seeing a show there will feel more like you’re at an intimate club. It even boasts an immersive sound system designed by L-Acoustics. In other words, it sounds really freaking good, no matter where you’re sitting. See the biggest names in comedy like Kevin Hart, or get a front-row seat to Carrie Underwood — one of the year’s most-anticipated shows to see in Vegas. The Grammy winner’s Reflection residency kicked off November 2023, and just added more dates through 2024, so you don’t want to miss it.

Since it’s technically your last day in Vegas, you’re going to want to hit the ground running with some quick bites to keep that Vegas train rolling. Sun’s Out Buns Out single-handedly saved us during our last Vegas trip thanks to both a post-Zouk, late-night Furikake Fries, and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese the morning after. If you couldn’t already tell, there’s one key ingredient here: eggs. Sun’s Out Buns Out serves up egg dishes all day, every day, so grab a fast breakfast here to start your day sunny-side up.

In case you want to sleep in and skip breakfast to maximize your night owl potential, or are still hungry after breakfast, we love Fuhu’s high-energy dining room . It’s more than just a pregaming spot (although it’s a pretty great pregaming spot), it also has a stellar brunch with an Asian flair and hand-crafted signature drinks. Since it’s from Zouk Group, you can listen to DJs and special acts while you munch on scoops of king crab and truffle fried rice (there’s a lot of truffle in this town). The vibe is dark, stylish, and sexy, overall a highly Instagrammable spot.

Let’s slow things down for a little bit and take a break from the bustle of Vegas at the ultra-luxurious Awana Spa . Resorts World’s haven takes a more energetic approach to the spa experience, and socializing is encouraged here, where the Foot Spa Lounge is outfitted with TVs so you can catch any number of games while you ease your tired feet. Head over to the Fountain of Youth, which features six vitality pools, warming tepidarium chairs, steam rooms, cool mist showers and more — all while transportational videos play on a wraparound LED screen that shows you a calming film of the tops of snowy peaks or rushing waterfalls.

For a pre-dinner libation, take an elevator ride to the top of Resorts World to the Allē Lounge on 66 , a dimly lit, inviting spot with wood floors and plush velvet armchairs. The 66th-floor lounge is an elegant spot to sip craft cocktails like a Genting Old Fashioned (Highland Park 12 Year, Demerara Syrup, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and Regan’s Orange Bitters). But the main attraction here is the breathtaking view of the Strip from its floor-to-ceiling windows, especially when it’s lit up at night. There’s even a telescope so you can grab a closer peek.
