The Complete Travel Toiletries List

Essential toiletries.

These are your travel toiletry essentials. Most of this stuff will feature on everyone’s toiletry bag checklist. If there are any things on this list of toiletries items that you don’t use at home then they’re probably not essential travel toiletries for you. A few of these items are personal preference only like hand cream or cotton buds. For guys, this is basically you whole toiletries list for men.

  • Shampoo – Packed in  GoToob Travel Bottles if you’re traveling less than 2 weeks or traveling carry on only.
  • Conditioner  – Packed as above
  • Hair brush / comb
  • Soap / body wash
  • Toothpaste – Get a travel sized toothpaste if you’re traveling with carry on only
  • Toothbrush – Folding toothbrushes like this are great for travel
  • Dental floss – Pick a small travel size one
  • Deodorant – Make sure it’s under 3oz if you’re traveling carry on only
  • Facial wipes / cleanser – Wipes are easy and less messy than a liquid cleanser
  • Facial moisturiser – I use Rosehip oil as it’s small, easy to pack and lasts a long time but whatever you use at home is right for you
  • Body moisturiser – You can leave this out if you’re staying in hotels but bring it if you’re using Airbnb, cruising or prefer a specific brand
  • Hand cream – Great for the flight!
  • Lip balm – Great for the flight, sun or skiing
  • Coconut oil – One of my top essential toiletries for traveling! Packing in a  GoToob , it is so useful for travel as a moisturiser, after sun, shaving gel, hair treatment, make up remover etc. If you plan on using this, you can omit other items on this list as necessary.
  • Razor – I use this small women’s travel razor
  • Shaving gel / oil – Shaving oil is more space efficient and is a an essential for a men’s toiletries list

Nice to Have / Trip Specific Toiletries for Vacation

These items are either things that are just nice to have or depend on the type of trip you’re taking. Here are some of the extra toiletries to take on vacation:

  • Sunscreen – This sunscreen smells amazing!
  • Insect repellent spray
  • After sun lotion / aloe vera – For sunburn or  moisturising your skin after sun exposure, toiletry bag essentials if you’re at the beach!

Hair & Beauty Toiletries for Women

A lot of these are women’s toiletries. Mens travel toiletries are a little more simple so guys can skip this section almost entirely. Most of these are toiletries to pack for vacation, when you’re going on a cruise, to a nice resort or on a weekend city break. If you’re backpacking toiletries like this probably aren’t necessary.

  • Hair ties  – Wrap your hair ties around the handle of your hairbrush and then slot your bobby pins in over the top!
  • Travel Flat iron – If you have hard to control hair, consider bringing a flat iron. Here’s my list of the best travel flat irons.
  • Travel hair dryer – Most hotels have a hair dryer in the room but bring your own if you’re staying in an Airbnb or at a friend’s house. Here’s my list of the best travel hair dryers on the market.
  • Dry shampoo – Get a travel size dry shampoo spray
  • Hair styling products – Travel size versions of hairspray and styling gel  are easy to find or put your gel into a GoTubb
  • Shower cap – If you’re staying in a hotel, it’s not necessary but if you’re in an Airbnb or staying at a friend’s then it’s useful
  • Make up brushes
  • Make up remover
  • Eye cream – You can scoop some into a little pot like this for travel
  • Solid perfume – These are great for travel! The Pacifica brand has some lovely Hawaiian scents in their range.

First Aid Kit

A small first aid kit is a very useful addition to your travel toiletries list. I pack mine into a Ziploc sandwich bag and just tuck it away until I need any of the items. You don’t need to bring the whole box of Bandaids or rehydration sachets, just a few of each item is enough.

  • Bite / sting cream
  • Immodium – Anti-diaharreal tablets for any emergency situations!
  • Pain relief  – Ibuprofen, panadol or asprin
  • Antacids – These are so useful if you’re going somewhere that has spicy food!
  • Rehydration salts – In case of any Delhi belly, important for kids.
  • Vitamin C sachets
  • Throat lozenges
  • Digital thermometer – This should definitely be on your toiletries travel bag list for any families traveling with small kids.

The 10 Best Travel Toiletries Items

Add these to your toiletries shopping list! After many years, I’ve worked out these are some of the best toiletries for travel . Pack your favorite items, of course, but give these items a try when putting together your toiletry kit list.

Folding toothbrush

One of my latest travel toiletries essentials is a folding toothbrush. Not only do they take up less space and fit into a Ziploc bag but they also protect your toothbrush bristles from germy surfaces or cross-contamination.

One of my favorite travel kit toiletries for packing light! These squeezey silicone tubes are perfect for shampoo, conditioner, coconut oil, body wash or any liquid you want to turn into travel mini toiletries. It’s easy to squeeze the liquid out and they don’t leak at all. They come in 2oz or 3oz sizes so are ideal for traveling carry on only.

travel toilet kit items

The tub version of GoToobs, a GoTubb lets you put an thicker creams or gels into smaller containers for travel. Very useful for things like eye cream or hair gel. You can also use them for pills, vitamins or even snacks.

travel toilet kit items

Coconut oil

One of the most useful toiletries to take travelling! You can use coconut for so many different purposes. It’s one of the toiletries travel bloggers most often recommend. It does just about anything! I use mine in lieu of eye make-up remover, body moisturiser, shaving gel, massage oil, hair oil and after sun cream.

Solid perfume

I love having a little pot of solid perfume to travel with because it’s such a nice pick me up when you’re feeling travel tired, smelly or just want to juzz yourself up for a night out. This Pacifica one comes in lots of great travel themed scents also!

Ziploc bags

Ziploc bags are so useful for packing toiletries for plane trips as they make it easy to pull your liquids out for security checks. If I’m traveling carry on only then my toiletries for air travel go into a Ziploc bag. You can also use Ziploc bags to tip vitamins into and leave your bulky bottles at home. Just write the contents and dosage on the outside of the bag.

travel toilet kit items

Magnifying mirror

A small magnifying mirror like this one is so useful for travel because it has suction cups so you can stick it to a hotel window or mirror when you’re doing your eye make up or using your tweezers.

Small brush

A decent travel size hair brush saves a lot of space in your travel toiletry bag.

Menstrual cup

For all the ladies, if you haven’t tried out a menstrual cup then you should definitely give it a go as it’s so useful for travel. A menstrual cup is a reusable tampon alternative that gives you 12 hours of protection and can simply be rinsed and reused. This collapsible one saves a lot of space and comes in a neat little travel container.

Another one for the ladies, BB cream is for your travel make up kit! It gives light coverage which is great for wearing make up in hot climates and also contains a sunscreen. I love this Tarte BB cream because it is very light and dries to almost a soft powder. Plus it comes in a 1oz travel size so is perfect for traveling light.

Tips for Packing Toiletries

Using my travel tips packing toiletries is easy! Here are a few of my best tips for traveling with toiletries and avoiding spillage or overpacking.

  • Packing toiletries for flight – I always pack my flight toiletries in Ziploc bags in case of spillage as the air pressure of the plane can cause bottles to squeeze in and push the contents out, even if the lid is screwed shut! To avoid messy situations pack anything that might leak into a Ziploc bag and then put it inside your toiletry bag. You’ll notice that my toiletries list for air travel includes packing shampoo and conditioner into GoToobs. This is because these won’t leak. Still, be careful with any liquids.
  • Packing toiletries for international travel – Unless you’re going somewhere very remote or off the beaten path, you will be able to buy most essential toiletries for travel when you’re abroad. You might not be able to get certain brands you love so if you’re picky, bring them with you.
  • Packing toiletries for carry on luggage – When packing toiletries for air travel you need to adhere to the guidelines of items under 3oz or 100ml. It’s easy to purchase travel-size versions of most ladies toiletries and mens toiletries. Or you can decant your larger shampoo/conditioner bottles into GoToobs. Another alternative is to use a solid shampoo bar although I personally don’t like these and many of them require you to rinse your hair with vinegar afterwards anyway.
  • Pick the right toiletry bag – When picking a toiletry bag, look for one that has good waterproof/spill-proof fabric in case of any leakages. A hook for hanging is also really useful so you can hang up your toiletries when there isn’t a lot of counter space. I really like this eBags flat toiletry kit because all the items lay flat in one layer so it’s very easy to find what you’re looking for in your bag. Here’s my full review of the eBags Pack It Flat Toiletry Kit.

Any questions or comments on what toiletries to pack for vacation?

I hope you’ve found my list of toiletries for travel useful. As it’s written from my perspective it’s obviously more a women’s toiletries packing list, but guys can definitely adapt it to a list of travel toiletries for men by cutting off the hair and beauty items and all the fancy creams. For families, these travel essentials toiletries are all the same so you’ll just need to add in your kids’ toothbrushes and make sure you have child suitable pain relief and a digital thermometer.

Here’s a quick summary: When you travel pack toiletries that you use at home, go for mini versions or put them in GoToobs, bring any trip specific items as needed and then use the best way to pack toiletries for air travel by putting them in Ziploc bags or a great toiletry kit bag.

What’s on your toiletry bag list? Do you have any trips on what toiletries to take on holiday? I’d love to hear from you if you have any great products or ways of packing them.

When it comes to packing for a trip, the toiletry kit is one of the most essential items (and one of the most complicated to put together, especially if you’re flying carry-on only). A well-curated kit ensures that you have all the necessary items without weighing you down or causing potential spills. From travel-sized toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste to essential tools like a razor, nail clippers, and a travel towel, a comprehensive toiletry kit ensures you’re fully equipped for any situation that might arise on the road.

To keep everything neatly contained, I like Eagle Creek’s toiletry bag , which can be hung up or laid out flat to quickly find whatever you need. Made from a water-repellent material, this kit will contain any toiletry spills—and can be washed for easy clean-up.

I also recommend keeping your toiletry kit in your personal item when you fly—in case of delays or canceled flights, it’s nice to be able to clean up (even if it’s in an airport bathroom). Plus, if your checked bag goes missing, you’ll still have the essentials.

Here’s what you should pack in your toiletry kit.

Dental Hygiene

Flat lay of a toothbrush, toothpaste, and white towel on a bright blue background

Toothbrush: The Philips One Travel Toothbrush is the best travel-size electric toothbrush, and the charge lasts for 30 days.

Toothpaste: Stop buying wasteful mini toothpaste and instead use a refillable toothpaste tube . This set from Matador contains one-week and two-week size refillable tubes that can be tossed in the dishwasher after each trip.

Floss: These floss picks come in a convenient carrying case for travel.

Mouthwash: Freshen up without adding a ton of weight to your toiletry kit with this concentrated mouthwash that lets you add however much water you want for customized freshness. One tiny bottle can be used up to 64 times!

The Ultimate Packing List

Makeup, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat laid flat on a pink background

Makeup Brushes : I’m obsessed with Ere Perez’ Eco Vegan Essential Brush Set , which is a super compact kit containing mini tweezers, multi-purpose makeup brushes, and an eyebrow/lash brush. The vegan brushes come with aluminium handles and caps that protect them for travel.

Artis Makeup Wipes : Keep your brushes clean on the road with Artis’ easy-to-use makeup wipes .

Vacay All Day Beauty Value Set: Sephora’s all-in-one Summer Showstoppers Kit offers miniature versions of mascara, lip stain, blush, and all the other makeup essentials you’ll need.

Shower Essentials

Shower materials laid flat on a dark yellow, grey, and light yellow backdrop

Shampoo and Conditioner: Vegamour’s travel-sized shampoo and conditioner set works on all hair types and uses a vegan B-silk protein to help promote thicker and fuller hair (that’s way better than any complimentary hotel shampoo.)

Body Wash: Dr. Bronner’s pure castile soap boasts that it can be used for 18 different things, including as a body wash or laundry detergent.

Face Wash: Drunk Elephant’s Pekee Cleansing Bar is a gentle facial cleanser in solid form, helping you stay under that 3-1-1 liquid requirement.

Refillable Toiletry Bottles: If you prefer to simply bring your own toiletries decanted into a travel size, I recommend Matador’s unique FlatPak Toiletry Bottles , which take up less space in your kit than hard plastic ones.

Razor: Downsize all your toiletries, even your razor, to save space. The Gillette Venus uses a regular size blade but has a small handle to keep it portable (and it includes a travel case).

The Essential Carry-On Bag Packing List

Various skincare products on a bright yellow backdrop

Face Lotion: For an ultra-affordable travel-sized face lotion, pack The Ordinary’s hydrating cream , which is great for all skin types.

Sunscreen: Don’t let a sunburn ruin your trip—pack plenty of sunscreen. Visor’s sunscreen is a delight to wear (compared to traditional sunscreen) and comes in a clear gel formula that won’t leave a white cast on your skin.

Body Lotion: Solid body lotion does exist—find this unique formulation in Kate McLeod’s stone body moisturizer , which melts on contact with your skin. The subtle lavender and chamomile scent is designed to help you sleep (no matter where you are).

Eye Cream: Look photo-ready (even after a red-eye) with Luzern’s Nuit Eye Balm , which helps reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. The cream comes with a travel-friendly applicator that provides a cooling and soothing feel.

Hair Products

Purple hair straightener on a purple backdrop

Leave-in Conditioner: Vegamour’s leave-in conditioner not only fights frizz but provides heat protection of up to 450 degrees (essential if you’re using the hotel-provided hair dryer.)

Comb/Brush: Pack a brush that does double-duty as a comb and can be used on wet or dry hair, like the Tangle Teezer Compact Styler .

Dry Shampoo: Skip the aerosol dry shampoo and opt for a hair powder instead, like this one by Handmade Heroes .

Hair Ties: Be kind to your hair and use a silk hair tie , which is less damaging to hair than traditional elastics.

Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Review

Miscellaneous

Antiperspirant or Deodorant: Degree makes a perfectly travel-sized version.

Contact Solution and Case: For contact lens wearers, Opti-Free’s travel set includes cleaning solution and a lens case.

Cotton Swabs: Good for everything from fixing makeup to cleaning ears, cotton swabs are essential to pack.

Nail Clipper: Revlon’s Compact Nail Clipper is ultra-portable.

Tweezers: Contrary to popular belief, tweezers are allowed in carry-on bags on a plane. Revlon’s travel set comes with a protective pouch to keep them safe in your toiletry kit.

Lip Balm: Opt for a lip balm with SPF protection to keep your lips from getting sunburned.

Packing toiletries is like an art form. You want to pack the essentials, but you don’t want to overpack and weigh down your suitcase. Follow our ultimate guide to creating the perfect travel toiletries list and master the art of packing!

How to Pack Toiletries for Travel

Table of contents.

You’ve packed your carry on, and everything fits perfectly. That is, until you need to fit it in your toiletry bag!

We’ve all been there, trying to travel light but not sure how to because of our toiletries. It’s a very common issue. You obviously want to include the essentials, but not overpack and weigh down your suitcase. especially since airline weight restrictions are even more stringent nowadays.

This is an issue I’ve personally tackled before myself! I made it my mission to not only choose the right clothes and shoes to downsize my packing but also do the same with my toiletries while still being able to take my favorite beauty products. Check out how I started in the video below:

Learn how to start downsizing your toiletries in this video !

First, let’s cover the basics of downsizing your toiletries, followed by a step-by-step walkthrough of how to master the art of packing toiletries.

toiletries

Toiletries make up your beauty and hygiene regimen on a trip!

What Are Toiletries?

Here’s a toiletries definition that’s simple and easy to understand: any item used to groom or clean yourself is considered a toiletry item, whether it’s soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, face cream, sunscreen, toothpaste, or even makeup is considered in the same category.

Most travelers bring travel size toiletries with them, either in carry on luggage or in checked baggage. Nowadays, the most popular way method of vacation is by taking a carry on suitcase on board an airplane, which means it’s necessary to minimize the size of toiletries so you don’t exceed weight or size limits.

The best way to pack beauty products is to use travel bottles for toiletries or a specific travel bag for toiletries.

toiletries

Before packing toiletries for a plane trip, check the allowed items for your suitcase.

What Toiletries Can You Bring On a Plane?

One of the most important things to know about toiletries on plane trips is to start planning before you leave by finding out what you are allowed to bring in your suitcase. To meet TSA toiletries requirements depends on whether or not you are checking your luggage.

For cabin or carry on toiletries, airlines require that liquid products be no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and all bottles must fit in a clear quart size ziplock bag when traveling with a carry on. Products that need to be inside the quart size ziplock bag are liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. This is called the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule .

Now that we’ve covered the basics, follow the step-by-step guide below on packing toiletries for travel to determine what you will and will not need to bring, along with strategies for downsizing products:

  • Step 1: Decide What Toiletries to Pack
  • Step 2: Downsize and Decant Products
  • Step 3: Replace Liquids With Solids
  • Step 4: Downsize Makeup Products
  • Step 5: Choose the Right Toiletry Bag
  • Step 6: Use a Toiletries Packing List to Organize

toiletries

Most travelers pack travel-size toiletries in their carry-on or checked baggage.

Step #1 – Decide What Toiletries to Pack

Once you know what you’re allowed to take, you can save a lot of space and weight in your luggage by minimizing your toiletries and eliminating certain items altogether. Just stick to the basics!

Start by composing a list of toiletries and listing all the grooming and beauty products you use daily. Then, consider which ones you must take and which ones you can leave behind. Remember, a trip is temporary, so you won’t be without something forever.

Certain things might be non-negotiable, such as your favorite brand of shampoo or premium face moisturizer.

toiletries

Dr. Bronners Travel Size Soaps can double as hand, body, and sometimes shampoo for hair if you are really traveling minimally!

One of the best ways to minimize toiletries is to choose multi-use products or items.

Determine if there are any products you already own that can work double-duty. Choose between two products that serve the same purpose.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps and Sea To Summit Wilderness Wash are two of the most popular travel all-in-one travel products.

You’d be surprised how many products can be used for multiple needs!

toiletries

Don’t default to using travel size containers when decanting products, as that can often be more than you need!

Step #2 – Downsize and Decant Toiletry Products

The biggest mistake travelers make with carry on toiletries is not considering how much product they actually use and then overpacking the wrong sizes. This is why I suggest experimenting at home to discover the amount you use of each product.

Before packing anything, note the essentials you’ll need, such as shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste, as well as your skincare and makeup products. Then, log how much you use of each product throughout the number of days your trip will last.

toiletries

These refillable Kitsch Ultimate Travel Containers are perfect for shampoo, conditioner, or creams. And since they sit flat, they take up very little room!

Measuring what you’ll need allows you to refer back when you’re ready to make the final plan.

After measuring what you need, you’ll be able to easily decant the perfect amounts into travel containers for toiletries.

Choose empty containers of various shapes and sizes, and DO NOT default to choosing “TSA toiletries size” 100 ml or 3 oz options, as they’re often too big for what you actually need. This is my ultimate secret for fitting various toiletries into a minimal space while still complying with the liquid rules.

These are the best travel containers because you pack only what you need:

  • Stackable Pots: These work extremely well for women who use various beauty products or have an extensive skincare routine. Use one stack for shampoo/conditioner/body wash and another stack for face moisturizer/body lotion/sunblock.
  • Individual Pots: Use these for makeup and beauty products you won’t need often; I especially love using individual pots for items like my concealer and foundation. I don’t need to use a large quantity, and they usually come in a heavy glass bottle, so decanting them saves weight, too.
  • Cylinder Soft Tubes: Use these for runny, thin liquids or for products you’d prefer not to dip your finger into. They’re also ideal for when you need a larger amount of a certain product, such as body lotion or shampoo. They tend to be leakproof and long-lasting, making them the best travel containers in comparison to hard plastic bottles. GoToob is the most popular brand and has a convenient 2 oz size.

toiletries

The 14-pack Teapile Travel Containers are designed to be leakproof, and they’re durable and BPA-free!

When using your own carry on toiletries size containers, remember these golden rules:

  • Only fill 2/3 of the container to avoid compression leaks.
  • Use a piece of saran wrap under the lid for extra leak prevention.
  • Avoid water-like substances such as toner. The thinner the liquid, the more likely it is to seep out.
Tip: We often get asked how to label toiletry containers. It can depend on what you’re using, be it a cylinder tube, stackable pot, or the newer, popular flat containers. You can purchase labels specifically for travel containers or use something simple like a permanent Sharpie marker to identify your products. The flat containers usually have an area for you to write with a marker. Whatever system you decide on, make it easy for you and aim to only do it once, so you can always have your labeled containers ready!

Keeping these tips in mind, here’s a list of products you may or may not need; you’ll find a list of toiletries examples below. Remember: be vigilant in eliminating what’s not necessary!

toiletries

Solid toiletries are more sustainable because you can reduce wasteful packaging.

Step #3: Replace Liquids with Solids

If you’ll be packing your toiletries in your carry on luggage, note the TSA restrictions on bringing liquids on board. The TSA requires that liquid products be no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) each and that all liquids fit inside a clear, quart-size bag when traveling with a carry-on.

Liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be inside the quart-size bag. This is known as the TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule , which was discussed above.

Limiting your toiletries to one quart-size bag means you’ll need to get creative with what to bring. This is where solid toiletries come in!

toiletries

Popular with readers and travelers, this Ethique Solid Shampoo and Conditioner Variety Pack saves space and helps the environment!

While not necessarily helping you downsize, replacing liquid beauty products with solid toiletries will help you meet the carry on liquids requirements. And you can put them into a smaller travel toiletries bag and separate them from your liquids.

There are some fantastic products on the market, from solid shampoo and solid face cleanser to insect repellent and sunscreen to even toothpaste , that can all help you abide by the TSA liquids rule but still look, feel, and smell your best while traveling.

Check out the most popular solid toiletries that TFG  readers swear by!

For specific items and requirements, always check the airline and airport websites or contact them and ask them directly.

toiletries

You can not only decant certain makeup products but also buy travel size or solid products to reduce your liquids allotment.

Step #4 – Downsize Makeup Products

Besides considering travel sized toiletries, another essential aspect of packing light is downsizing your makeup! Of course, you want to look somewhat polished on vacation, but remember that makeup can take up a lot of space.

Because a lot of readers have asked me how I travel with makeup, I thought I’d share how I downsize my everyday makeup to a simpler travel routine. (I also share my skincare routine in this post and how I make it work for travel.)

Check out the video below to see how I organize my makeup items and get them downsized for a trip!

Watch this video to learn how I downsize my makeup for travel!

As you learned how to pack toiletries for a flight, the same applies here. Create a travel capsule makeup collection that includes only the essentials and eliminates the clutter. Travel mascara , brow liner , eyeliner , blush , and travel size lip color are the most visually enhancing products, giving you the biggest bang for your buck.

toiletries

The Vera Bradley Cotton Cosmetic Bag has a washable lining and is great for holding cosmetics! Or you can use a small travel bag for toiletries for makeup too!

So, how do you build a capsule makeup collection? Here are the best ways you can downsize your cosmetics:

  • Decant products where you can: Things like foundation and concealer can be transferred to smaller containers; that way, if you lose your makeup bag, you won’t lose everything and have to start all over again.
  • Exclude duplicates and pack multi-use products: Determine if there are any products you already own that can work double-duty. Avoid makeup similar in purpose or color, and only choose one to pack. These travel size multitasking face makeup palettes might be small, but they offer a lot of options!
  • Opt for solid stick products: Makeup products, including liquids, gels, and creams, will need to go inside the quart size clear bag, along with the rest of your toiletries. Buying products like stick foundation and compact cream blusher will help maximize space.
  • Use Double-Sided Makeup Brushes: Bringing a bunch of brushes can be a pain. Instead of having many different eyeshadow brushes, I just use one that’s double-sided. My favorite is from EcoTools , and it’s one of the best multi-use makeup tools.
Another thing to consider is removing makeup—wipes or liquids can take up space. I use a makeup remover cloth, like the Original Makeup Eraser Cloth , which only needs water and removes waterproof mascara!

With these tips in mind, here’s a list of products you may or may not need; you’ll find a list of makeup examples below. Remember: be vigilant in eliminating what’s not necessary!

Sample Travel Size Makeup List:

The wrong toiletry bag can make it difficult to organize products or be too bulky for a carry on, so choose what’s appropriate for your trip!

Step #5 – Choose the Right Toiletry Bag

Along with downsizing, a carry-all toiletries travel bag can keep your beauty care products organized while traveling.

Toiletry bags are travel pouches designed to hold everything from toothbrushes and toothpaste to shampoos and conditioners to skincare and makeup! These bags will keep all of your toiletries organized and mess-free and allow for easy packing in your suitcase, trip after trip.

toiletries

The Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag is #1 for readers due to its numerous water-resistant pockets, which keep everything organized!

Not all toiletry travel bags are created equal, and there are many different styles to choose from depending on your packing style, products, and the trip you’re planning. Here are the most popular types:

  • Hanging toiletry bags: Are the most popular style among readers, and I myself typically avoid toiletry bags that don’t have them! Hung up rather than sitting on a wet counter, hanging toiletry bags saves space and keeps things tidy and organized. The Vasco toiletry bag has been my go-to lately. It initially grabbed my attention with its slim, flat design that won’t take up a lot of space in a carry-on suitcase or personal item.
  • Non-hanging toiletry bags: Some travelers prefer a classic, non-hanging toiletry bag. They’re often more compact, polished, and sometimes more versatile than their hanging counterparts. If you’re staying at an accommodation where you’re not worried about counter space, then these bags are great. A popular one is the Away Large Toiletry Bag .
  • Dopp kit for women: Typically slim and rectangular, dopp kits are practical when it comes to packing. They feature a simple main compartment that makes it easy to see everything and have plenty of versatility in terms of what fits inside. Readers love the Quince Nappa Leather Toiletry Bag !
  • Cosmetic Bags: While excellent for storing makeup, travel cosmetic bags also make great toiletry bags if you’re looking for a nice open space to organize your products. It’s a simple, fuss-free way to keep your toiletries packed away. TFGs really love Longchamp , and many have sung the praises of their compact cosmetic bag for makeup or small toiletries.

Tip: If you’re traveling carry on only, keep that quart-size ziplock bag (storing your liquids) easily accessible when you get to the airport. Once you get through security, place them back into your toiletry bag.

No matter how long a trip is, a toiletries packing checklist can make planning and organizing less stressful!

Step #6 – Use a Printable Toiletries Packing List

The list features unique categories to help you pack for your trip efficiently and includes all the items listed in various categories above and has spaces where you can fill in your own information:

  • You can write in an item’s weight (lighter items mean less overall baggage weight).
  • You can note if you need to purchase something or if you already own it.
  • And most importantly, you can organize where you’ll pack each item including suggested packing organizers like these .

Thank you for your lists. So helpful. I also love the contact lens containers for foundation, cleanser and a few other things. Really has made a difference.

Maxx Walske

This is FANTASTIC! I was able downsize my toiletry bag size and weight to a third of what it was. TFG always has the best suggestions and solutions! Thank you!

Shari Elice

Thank you so much for these tips! I travel frequently, and keep travel sized products in my kit ready to go. It means that it is one less thing for me to have to think about.

Tracy

Great article, this is the thing I struggle with the most! Decanting saved so much room, just need to buy better containers for the products I have, thanks for the suggestions

Denise

What a great article! Thank you.

What a great article!

Shannon

Wow. So much great information here. Toiletries are always where I struggle with packing!

Sal

I loved the tip to downsize beyond the usual travel sized products. I tried the contact lenses case for my liquid foundation. It saved so much space and weight in my toiletries bag.

kim burrill

I love all the advice wit toiletries!

Peggy Weatherington

Probably the biggest impact on my packing has been the tips to reduce and decant toiletries. I have followed this website and FB page for several years and the first thing I realized was that my toiletry footprint in my suitcase can be much smaller. This, in turn, makes for more room in small bathrooms (I typically cruise). Thanks for all your great info!!!

Vera Kozlowski

This is a great post, very helpful for thos of us that think we need to bring it all with us. Thank you for helping us travel lighter!

Charlotte Hicks

Sort of in the toiletries category, if traveling to South East Asia, I highly recommend getting a small pack of toilet seat covers and travel toilet paper (or carry tissues). No guarantee that there will be any available in locations other than your hotels. Otherwise, there is a hose with a spray handle for you to use, and that’s it. :0

Tabitha DePaolo

I struggle with packing toiletries and overpacking things. I really appreciate this step by step guide that holds my hand and walks me through every step of packing so I don’t get overwhelmed, confused, or frustrated trying to figure everything out.

Laurie Brown

This is the most helpful travel blog, as I have always struggled with my liquids leaking when I fly. Thx for posting your excellent resources!

I love the compass rose packing cubes and look forward to taking them to Paris and Amsterdam the end of October.

This article has been a lifesaver as my toiletry bag is out of control! I learned many new ways of pairing it down and found some great containers to make that happen. The tips will also help my clear liquids bag be more manageable! Thank you for the great ideas.

Molly Hillman

I love all of these suggestions! I now have the flat-it pack it from eBags and also the lip balm containers which are genius! Thank you!

Dot

Lots of good tips, but beware of local restrictions when traveling; e.g., many African countries are very restrictive about plastics. Plastic bags are bad for the animals… If the plastic bag could be a 1-use bag, it might be prohibited even though you plan to use it multiple times during your trip. Some countries prohibit the shopping bags from the duty-free shops. There could be fines and imprisonment. Just a reminder to check restrictions in your designation country.

Alex

Very good point, thanks for sharing Dot!

NutmegsMom

I find it very informative to see what everyone says about downsizing toiletries. Thanks for sharing a great post. And the comments!

So glad you found this guide helpful!

Rebecca

Minimizing my toiletries and my toiletry case is the challenge I must overcome. I just came back from a 16 day trip to Austria. Individual zipper pouches not only create more bulk but also more weight. Reading your well written articles will assist me in this challenge.

Allison

I used those round clear jars on my last trip, but I couldn’t really get a grip on the lid and base to separate the two 🙁 I’m going back to using old empty jars of product and decanting into them instead.

Zoey Blue

I just want to thank Travel Fashion Girl and everyone that is part of this community for the inspiration and know-how for successful travel when abroad and also when dreaming from home. Taming toiletries remains a challenge! Using multi-purpose (lips, cheeks, eyes) make-up helps minimize make up, and sample sizes (like tiny mascara) are helpful, as is repotting items into much smaller containers versus buying travel sizes. Thanks for all the tips!

Kelly Settle

Great tips. Toiletries are the most challenging for me.

Another great lesson from Alex at TFG! I have more toiletries and medicines than clothes to take on my 15 day trip to the UK. I leave Thursday and am still refining my packing. These toilette tips are sooo helpful! In fact, all of Alex’s blogs are so helpful! I’m so glad I found this group!!

Charlotte

We first started traveling internationally in 2013 and were determined to do carry-on only. I thought it was impossible until I discovered TFG. Toiletries were the most difficult for me to figure out. 9 years later I still use all the tips I’ve learned from here.

Molly Zimmerman

Thanks to your tips I was able to downsize my toiletries and pack in a carry on only for my recent 11 day trip to Europe. Never did I ever think I could make this happen!

I’m so scared to travel with a checked bag theses days and my toiletries are the thing that I was most concerned about fitting into a carry on. I love all the downsizing tips and can’t wait to use them for my next trip in October! Thanks Alex.

Sheila

I like shopping the travel size section in my drug store and at Target. I find lots of different size containers there. I sometimes buy items just for the containers and then fill them with my products.

Julie

I am constantly working on perfecting my toiletry packing. I use solid items such as Bite toothpaste bits and Lush shampoo bars. I like to put liquids in the smallest containers possible. My favorite small containers are one ounce Nalgene bottles and 10 ml. lip gloss tubes.

Leanne

This post helped me so much when I was packing for my trip to France in April 2022. I think I was fairly successful in packing only the toiletries that I needed and was planning to check my bag, anyway. I also watched the video again when packing for a shorter trip to NY and was able to take even less toiletries on that trip! Thanks for all of your tips and tricks on safety too in the Paris 2022 Packing Guide!

Nadja Jackson

It’s amazing how little I actually need when I travel—I use lots of products but a tiny amount goes a long way and helps so much with both volume and weight. I decant into a combination of the tiny “lip gloss” tubes and have the tiny deodorant sticks as well for solids (perfect for using up the end of a large stick that wouldn’t have come out anyway). Feels good to not purchase more throwaway plastic for travel sizes since I just refill when I get home and then I’m ready for the next trip! Also I highly recommend lotion bars.

Lisa Bamburg

Oh my goodness! This has helped me so much. Packing my liquids was my number one worry about consolidating to a carry on.

Heather

What a helpful post! I’m just going to be traveling stateside, but this gave me some great ideas as our space is limited. Thanks TFG!

valerie mudrow

I have learned so many great ideas for decanting makeup etc. I now have lip gloss tubes, contact lens cases and travel size. It makes traveling so much easier – thank you!

Christine

We all have such different needs and non-negotiables, but this article really takes us through the steps to figure out what works for us. Using these tips (and with some trial runs) I’ve been able to get down to a small Sea To Summit toiletry bag. Still refining with each trip….

Sandra

Downsizing my toiletries is my biggest challenge! Thank you for these great tips.

Diane

Wow this information is so helpful. I will use many of these tips.

Simone

thank you for these tipps. I always feel very accomplished after I pack my clothes but than comes everything else, like toiletries and electronics and my backpack is bursting.

Sandra

Your suggestions and tips have been so helpful when preparing for an adventure. Thank you!

Anne

Every article you write is helpful, but packing toiletries is my biggest struggle. So thank you for this one!

Robin Polito

Using contact lens cases were a game changer on my recent Safari. We were limited to a soft -sided duffle and we wanted to carry on due to Heathrow so this was the way to go. It is amazing how much product fits in each case and how much product you actually use on a trip. I then used the cases on our recent road trip to Arizona. Never had a single spill either trip.

Fern Rabil

This is my all-time favorite post. Life -changing, making carry-on travel the only way to go now. Huge eye-opener!!!

Tracy Trencher Morra

This post is incredible. So much useful information! Thank you!

Karen

I have sliced up solid shampoo and conditioner bars into smaller pieces, to make ones the right size for a weeklong trip.

Katrina Gillett

Thanks for the list!

Vicki L Patterson

There is now available shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, soap, laundry detergent in sheet form, and mouthwash and toothpaste as tablets, lotions in bar form,

Hi Vicki, thank you for sharing your great toiletries tip with us! ?

We love solid toiletries and have a range of options here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/solid-toiletries-for-travel/

Rick

One trick I found on the web that works great is to use contact lens cases. You can put a few days/week supply in them, mark them with a black sharpie, and put in your toiletry bag.

Hi Rick, thank you for sharing your great travel hack for packing your toiletries with us! Happy travels! ?

Barbara

Someone on your blog had mentioned she uses plastic paint cups from Michaels to put her make up in. What a great idea! I just purchased (16) 1/6 oz cups for $2 ( with 50% off coupon) and put my eye cream, under eye concealer, blush…. in them. They are awesome! And they are airtight, so the product won’t dry out! Thank you, whoever you are!

Wow, that is amazing Barbara, so happy to hear it worked so well with packing your toiletries!! Thank you for sharing! Happy Travels!

Jessica

I wear contacts and somehow have loads of extra contact cases. I use them for putting my face moisturizer, BB cream, salve (in case of cuts or infections) in for trips up to a week. I just use a sharpie to mark something on the outside of the case so I know what is inside.

Hi Jessica, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Elena Garcia

Love your tips! They have helped me to be a more confident traveler!

Gabriella

I do the same because I know how much I need for products compared to others.

Kay Lewis

Two products worth the money (and I’m a cheapo). Blinc mascara. Order online. It is water-proof and rub-proof. To remove, rub with fingers and warm water. No remover required.

ColoreScience sunblock, SP 50. It’s a powder, with the brush built in. No need to pack powder. And who re-applies gloppy lotion every 2 hours? My dermatologist says the best sunblock is the one you use.

Hi Kay, thank you so much for sharing your travel toiletries! 🙂

Sierra

🙂 sounds great! Thanks.

Connie

I have found that some doctors offices have small and very small bottles that you can get for free, if you ask nicely. One example is eye doctors, who have these bottles for sample eyedrops. I’ve gotten 6 in this way….for free. And they are the perfect size for travel!

Hi Connie, thank you so much for sharing your great travel tip for toiletries! 🙂

Looking for a clear, easy-to-follow toiletries packing list? I’ve gotchu.

I’m not sure what it is about toiletries that makes them so easy to forget, but time and time again, even after 4 years of frequent travel, I frequently find myself in exotic locales without basic necessities like toothbrushes, combs and *shudder* deodorant.

So after brushing my teeth with my fingers for the umpteenth time, I’ve decided to plant my butt down and write a complete Toiletries Packing List, both for myself, and of course for you, the best looking readers on the planet.

In this post, I’ll also be including my favourite products/must-haves. I’m a pretty low-maintenance person with a penchant for packing light , but there are some things I couldn’t travel without. Here is the full list!

If you need a handy version of this printed out, I’ve got you. Click here to download it from my Resource Library!

Essential Items for Your Toiletries Packing List

Before we get started with the actual toiletries I pack, I want to introduce you to a few different products that can be re-used time and time again, and will make packing toiletries way easier in the long run. In my suitcase, I’m always sure to have…

Re-usable toiletry bottles

This helps you save both money and the environment, so double tick!

I always travel with my own re-usable toiletry bottles, which means I don’t need to use the mini toiletries at the hotel (which, while adorable, aren’t great for unnecessary plastic waste) and also I have easy access to my own favourite products all the time. Re-usable bottles are cheap and easy to find online! Here’s an example.

Of course, the best bottles for you depend on your needs. I have a full guide here that rounds up the best options for different functions, but here is a table summarizing some of the highest rated toiletry bottles you can buy online:

A reuseable toiletries bag

Forget using Ziplocks or the flimsy little bags provided at the airport. Get yourself a clear, TSA-approved toiletries bag instead and you’ll be able to reuse them over and over. Plus, they’re sturdier. Mine is similar to this one and I love it.

Depending on your needs though, you might want to look into investing in a more comprehensive toiletries bag.  I have a full guide here that rounds up the best options, but here is a table summarizing some of the highest rated toiletry bags you can buy online:

A good travel towel

No lie, this travel towel  is my favourite travel item in the whole wide world. It folds up super small, is amazingly absorbent, dries quickly and is perfect for the beach, hostels and pretty much anywhere you need to go. Best investment I ever made!

travel toilet kit items

Check prices and reviews for this amazing travel towel

OPTIONAL: A hanging toiletries bag

travel toilet kit items

A lot of travellers swear by these hanging toiletries bags, which allow you to easily prop up all your stuff for easy access (without having to put them on the grimy sink). I don’t think this is a total necessity, but a handy splurge if you need it! Plus, this one has pink flamingos on it, sooo…

Toiletries Packing List: Summary

If you just want a quick toiletries packing list to glance through, here it is! Obviously this is a very thorough list and you might not need all these things, but I’ve listed them anyway to remind you of them. You can scroll down below for a more detailed explanation and product recommendations.

Oral Hygiene:

Comb or hairbrush, shampoo & conditioner, hair elastics, hair straightener/curler, miscellaneous face & body care:, moisturizer, shaving cream, miscellaneous extras:, make up wipes, q-tips/cotton pads.

Eye care:

Contact Solution

Feminine hygiene products:, pantiliners, toiletries packing list: detailed explanation & recommendations.

A lot of the time, you guys ask for more specific recommendations about travel products, so if you need any further clarification or elaboration on the above list, here it is!

The #1 thing I forget, so I put it first!

One key consideration is to either get a toothbrush with a protective case , or remember to bring a protective case for it, otherwise your toothbrush will just be floating around in your bag with everything else, which is a little gross for something you regularly put in your mouth.

If you’re looking to get something new, I recommend buying a bamboo toothbrush. You can easily get packs online for SO cheap, plus they’re much better for the environment. For instance, this 6 pack comes with a carrying case and is less than $15.

Check prices and reviews for this set of bamboo toothbrushes

I’ll never understand why toothpaste isn’t usually included in hotel toiletry kits. I always manage to forget mine!

You can stock up here if you’re out.

If you’re looking for a non-liquid option, some folks make mouthwash tablets these days. Otherwise, I’d recommend just filling up your own reusable bottles rather than buying mini-versions.

travel toilet kit items

Check prices and reviews for these mouthwash tablets

Another thing I always forget, so I’m gonna underline this multiple times for you. To save space, you can get very cute mini hairbrushes like this one .

I use a special blue shampoo because of my dyed hair, and I bring it with me everywhere using my own  reusable bottles . This is more cost-effective in the long run and better for the environment too, so I highly recommend it! If you don’t mind it, a 2 in 1 might be a good idea if you want to cut down on your toiletries packing list.

travel toilet kit items

Otherwise, solid shampoos are all the rage now. I have a strange hair type and I’ve never found them to work that well for me. That said, if you want to reduce liquids and get a product that will travel/keep well, my friends rage about the shampoo bars from Lush. There’s also  a huge range of affordable options on Amazon.

Check prices and reviews for these shampoo bars

Always handy to have at least a few small ones in your bag for days when your hair just won’t cooperate. If you have thick hair like me, I highly recommend you get some higher quality ones to avoid mid travel day breakage. Here’s a cheap pack you can grab on Amazon.

Always, always handy to have a few of these. If you keep losing them like I do, you can buy them in bulk online for super cheap here.

travel toilet kit items

I’m not usually high maintenance but one indulgence I always allow myself is  my hair straightener ! I use it to curl my hair too, so it’s a double whammy.

Sure it’s a little heavy, but it’s worth it because otherwise my hair looks like a rat’s nest.

One thing I will say: don’t waste your time with mini travel straighteners… they don’t save THAT much space and in my experience, they don’t work nearly as well.

Check prices and reviews for this straightener (that also curls hair really well!)

I don’t usually bring it to be honest, but some people swear by it so I thought I would include it. Aerosol toiletries like these are okay in small amounts for carry-on baggage.

So, so crucial. I have a genuine fear of smelling bad, so I actually bring a little deodorant in my toiletries bag and also every purse. This Lady Speedstick 48h is my favourite of all time, so much that I stock up on it every time I’m back home because they don’t sell it in Germany!

Again, I really recommend you just get some  reusable bottles  and bring whatever body wash you use at home. It’s more cost-effective in the long run and better for the environment too.

travel toilet kit items

This Nivea Purifying Facewash is my favourite. It works great on my oily skin and I just bottle it up in my reusable bottles and I’m good to go. Check prices and reviews for my favourite facewash

It’s so basic but I swear by my Cetaphil Lotion . It’s nothing fancy but it works wonders.

The most important consideration with your razor is that you have a case for it, otherwise it gets wet and goopy and weird to just throw in with the rest of your toiletries (razor and toothbrush touching? NOPE!!)

This mini travel razor from Venus is my fave – the case is really cute and handy. Otherwise, my friends have said great things about this Sphynx All in One which even comes with a shave bar.

I don’t use it. Is that blasphemy? Anyways, if you do, just don’t forget to pack it!

I always, always, always forget sunscreen. Don’t be me. This Neutrogena one is my favourite.

I don’t usually use these – facewash is sufficient for me!

A tiny bundle is always handy to have in your toiletries bag just in case! I’ve seen a cute hack where you can also store them in a little pill container. Cute!

If you need a good lip balm recommendation, Burt’s Bees is the bees knees.

No recommendations – sorry! I don’t usually include perfume in my toiletries packing list but some might 🙂

(All self explanatory, methinks, so I’ll spare you additional explanation)

Disclaimer: I’m not a fancy make-up girl. I’m just so bad at make-up that any expensive, high-end products would be lost on me… so these are basic products that I own and love.

This Loreal Liquid eyeliner is my favourite thing ever. I have very oily skin so finding eyeliner that doesn’t just rub off is a miracle. Plus, it’s cheap! I wear it everyday.

I used to avoid mascara like the plague because it would always rub off and give me panda eyes. This Covergirl Lashblast waterproof mascara is the only one I’ve found that stays put all day. I love it.

Lipstick/gloss

Okay, so I don’t normally gush about makeup products because I’m no makeup guru but I literally swear by this Maybelline Superstay 24h lip stuff .

It’s cheap, comes in a bajillion colours and is SO good for travelling because it lasts such a long time.

Trust me, if it can survive 6 hours of straight-drinking at Oktoberfest and still look flawless, it can survive any of your travel days, I promise!

travel toilet kit items

Check prices and reviews for my favourite lip stuff

Foundation / Concealer

I find that the Loreal True Match line works great and lasts all day!

When I travel, I just use moisturizer but back in the day, I used to use this Smashbox one a lot.

Lastly, I wear eyeshadow on rare occasion but the Naked Mini Palettes are great – I have the Heat one and it’s super versatile.

These are pretty straight forward, no explanation necessary I think…

What NOT to Include in Your Toiletries Packing List

Full-sized anything

It’s not worth it! It’s heavy and also you won’t be able to bring it in your carry-on.

Flammable items

Again, not worth the risk and you probably won’t be able to bring it on.

Any “just in case” items

Sometimes, people panic and freak out and pack a million things just in case, like a full-on first aid kit.

I would like to remind you that you’ll most likely be travelling somewhere where there are pharmacies and stores for you to buy your stuff.

Don’t pack anything “just in case” because you’ll most likely not need it. Instead, just buy it when the “case” arises.

Hey Christina! Just thought I’d give you a heads up that the ‘ultimate’ in your Pinnable image at the top of the post is missing the ‘t’ 🙂 – great post though, always love your writing!

haha d’oh! thanks so much for pointing that out – I would have never noticed. Running off to change it now <3

My suggestion for perfume is to use Sephora’s sample bottles and refill them with your perfume from home.

The only just in case item that I always throw in is a couple of sink packages of TIDE. They fit easily in the makeup bag and you just never know… The rest of your list is great! Thanks!

I would definitely add Tylenol or ibuprofen. Just get the little travel tube and refill as needed.

The essential travel toiletries kit – day 17 of 30 days to packing a better bag.

Welcome to Day 17 of 30 Days to Packing a Better Bag .

Today’s post is pretty much the culmination of the last few days of topics, so if you haven’t done so yet, we suggest reading about travel size hair products and how to pack liquid toiletries .

Now’s the part where we give you the list of items you absolutely need to take with you, the essential toiletries kit , along with a little advice on how to pack them all up all nice and neatly in your luggage of choice.

Essential Toiletries Kit Basics

Shampoo and Conditioner: You’re going to need a shampoo and conditioner of sorts for your hair. If too many liquids make you worry, look into a solid shampoo bar or solid conditioner bar . Dry shampoo might also be a good addition that can help you cut back on the amount of liquids you need to bring.

Remember to take only what you need to conserve space and weight.

  • Consider cutting out shampoo with the “No Poo” method or choose a concentrated shampoo that you can pack less of.

Body Wash: We recommend going with a bar soap, like Dove, to clean that travel grime off from time to time — and to cut back on liquids. If space is a worry, try hacking a normal sized bar in half instead of paying more for those special travel size bars in the shops. If you’re staying in a hotel, some sort of soap will most likely be provided.

Facial Moisturizer: Every lady needs a facial moisturizer of some kind. You’re going to want to make sure you get one with SPF built-in since you will probably be spending more time in the sun on your travels than usual. Try to go with a moisturizer that you can use both day and night.

Face Wash / Cleanser: Bring along your favorite facial wash or acne cleanser. With new diets, changes in sleep patterns, and more public transportation use than normal, breakouts are sure to happen when you travel. Keep them at a minimum by keeping your face clean. Depending on your skin type, facial wipes might also be a good option. (Brooke calls these her “bath in a bag” since they can be used in a pinch to wipe down your body if you don’t have time to shower before your next activity.)

  • To further reduce your liquids, check out the best toiletry items for carry-on travel .

Toothbrush: This is a no-brainer! If you want to go minimal, go for a brush that is travel sized, or one that folds in half .

  • Find all our travel-friendly toothbrush options in this post: Travel-friendly Toothbrush Options That Take Up Less Space .

Toothpaste: Just like a toothbrush, toothpaste keeps you fresh and clean and is a no-brainer in your essential travel toiletry kit. Go with travel size tubes, or try something like toothpaste sachets or toothpaste tablets (you can even DIY your own toothpaste dots ).

Floss: Floss is a must-pack. Not only is it vital to your oral health, but it can also function as string in a pinch to sew up holes and tie bits and bobs together.

Razor: If you can handle going a few days without shaving, perhaps waiting to buy a disposable razor until you arrive is an option especially if you’re traveling carry-on only. Or, get a good wax before leaving home and ditch the razor if you can.

  • Check out these other hair removal options for travelers .

Deodorant: Go for the solid kind to cut back on your liquids. If you want something that lasts several months, the crystal deodorants will do the trick. Grants of Australia also makes a long-lasting crystal deodorant .

Q-tips and Cotton Pads: For cleaning your ears and removing makeup or dirt. Just put a handful in a ziplock bag before putting in your toiletries kit.

Period Products: No one wants to deal with their period while they are traveling but unfortunately there’s not much you can do about it except come prepared. We prefer traveling with a Diva Cup because it’s reusable and takes up hardly any room in your bag. But pack whatever product works for you. More on this on Day 20: Health and Hygiene Packing Considerations .

  • Check out our ultimate guide for traveling on your period .

Contact Lens Solution: If you wear contacts and are planning on using them on your trip, you have to pack your contact lens solution. Choose a travel size option rather than decanting from the original bottle for hygiene reasons.

  • Read how to successfully travel with contact lens solution .

Hair Brush and Hair Ties: Choose a travel size brush (like we discussed in our travel size hair products post ) and bring any hair accessories necessary.

Essential Toiletries Kit Extras

Hair Items: Leave-in conditioners, hair oils, hair sprays, and dry shampoos .

Skin Items: Body lotions, cuticle creams, and body sprays.

Items Specific to Your Destination: Mosquito repellent, sunscreen (necessary for a beach holiday but not really for a winter destination. ALWAYS pack SPF for your face), etc.

Tips for Packing Toiletries

1. Go for the smallest toiletry bag possible when packing your essential toiletries kit.

Just like choosing your luggage , having a toiletry bag that is large just means you are more likely to fill it with things you don’t really need.

  • If you’re worried about running out of toiletries, check out this post: How Long Do Travel Toiletries Last?

large toiletries kit

You’d be surprised what you can fit into a smaller bag. This holds:

  • Dr. Bronner’s Soap (shampoo and body wash)
  • Conditioner
  • Facial cleanser
  • Facial moisturizer + SPF
  • Leave-in hair oil
  • Toothpaste sachets, floss, and toothbrush
  • Crystal deodorant stick.

And there is still a little room to fit something else if needed!

2. Plan your toiletry packing according to your packing goals .

Are you checking your luggage or going carry-on only? If going carry-on only , your liquid toiletries will need to be in a separate bag that can be scanned at security . We have some great carry-on toiletry bag alternatives to a Ziploc .

Consider your carry-on goals and the liquids in your toiletry kit.

Remember: compartmentalizing your toiletries will help you to stay organized on the road, as well as keep potential mess and leaks confined to a single space in your bag or suitcase.

I bought the small size of this, then thought it was a perfect size for my electronics (which it TOTALLY is!!) and decided to buy the large as a toiletry bag. It may be a bit overlarge, but I’m packing more things in there, like laundry soap and all my medicine and all that so it’s not unneeded stuff.

10 Essentials for Your Travel Toiletry Kit

A simple guide to creating your ultimate travel toiletry kit..

Beth Luberecki

Personal Item 101: The 10 Things I Always Pack

  • I’m a a longtime travel journalist who takes packing seriously. Here’s my list of items that help me tote all the essentials without overpacking.
  • These essentials will help you build a toiletries kit that has everything you need and nothing you don’t.

Creating my ultimate toiletries kit meant letting go of the idea that I was going to bring every single thing I use at home. Once I realized that my on-the-road care routine needed to be a more nimble version of my at home regimen, I was able to sort out the essentials from the extras and pack both effectively and light.

Now that I have my dopp kit perfected, I keep it fully stocked so it’s ready to go when I am. At the end of each trip, I simply restock items that are low and then store the kit.And as I prep for my next trip, I’m always grateful to my past self.

Essential Items for Travel Toiletry Kits

The key to a great travel toiletries kit is to have smaller travel size versions of your go-to products that are easier to fit in your case and that  meet TSA requirements  if you won’t be checking your bag. Here are 10 essentials for a well-stocked travel toiletry kit.

1. Travel-Sized Containers

travel-sized toiletries bottles in a row

If your favorite health and beauty products don’t come in small sizes, squeeze or pour some into travel-friendly containers. This allows you to keep using your favorite shampoo or moisturizer no matter where you go without toting around oversized bottles or tubes.

Look for containers that are easy to fill and refill and are leakproof. You want them to stay closed when you’re not using them but be easy to open when you want to wash your face or hair. Labels can be helpful so you don’t mix up your sunscreen with your conditioner.

WALK IN COMFORT: How to Choose the Best Walking Shoes for Travel

Pro Tip: If you have a product that does tend to leak, open the top of the bottle and slip in a square of plastic wrap, then screw the lid back into place. It should keep it from leaking.

TourScoop recommends : I like the containers from  Cadence ,  Kitsch ,  Matador , and  Humangear .

2. Shampoo and Conditioner

Sure, you can roll the dice and see what kind of shampoo and conditioner your hotel stocks in each room. Or you can play it safe by bringing your own along.

After all, the free conditioner (if there is any) is often not quite tuned to your particular hair needs. And if you want products specially tailored for, say, color-treated or curly hair, you’re not going to find that in your hotel room.

TourScoop recommends:  Trusted hair-care brands  Tresemmé ,  OGX ,  R+Co ,  Ethique , and  Redken  make a variety of travel-sized toiletries like shampoos and conditioners for various hair types.

3. Face Wash/Makeup Remover

man washing face on vacation

The bar soap or body wash in your average hotel room isn’t ideal for washing your face at the end of the day. Bringing your own cleansing options that help address your specific skincare needs makes for a much better situation.

BEST OF THE BEST: Best Tour Companies for Guided Tours

There are a variety of formulations available in travel sizes, from gel cleansers and scrubs to foaming face washes. And makeup-removing or facial-cleaning wipes are easy to stash in a toiletry kit without taking up a lot of space (bonus: wipes don’t count as liquids, which if you’re traveling carry-on is extra great).

TourScoop recommends:  You won’t go wrong with on-the-go face cleaning products from  CeraVe ,  Burt’s Bees ,  Neutrogena ,  Cetaphil , and  Murad .

4. Deodorant

Here’s the truth: Traveling can be sweaty, whether you’re dashing to catch a plane or bus or hiking through scenic terrain. And since you’re likely to reuse certain items of clothing, it’s extra important to manage odors, making deodorant or antiperspirant a vital part of your travel toiletry kit.

You can go for a traditional antiperspirant, a natural deodorant, or even deodorant wipes for quickly freshening up between activities when there’s no time for a shower. Whatever you choose, you won’t regret having it. Stick to travel-sized deodorants and antiperspirants; they’re easier to carry and still last a long time.

TourScoop recommends:  I like the options from  Native ,  Degree ,  Pacifica , and  Dove .

5. Moisturizer/Serum

person putting moisturizer on hands

Whether you deal with dry patches or an oily T-zone, keeping up with your skincare routine while traveling helps your skin stay healthy and comfortable. Plenty of brands offer travel-sized moisturizers, or you can use a travel container (see above) to bring along your favorite from home.

WALK THE WORLD: Best Walking, and Trekking, and Hiking Tours

This is a case where products that do double- or triple-duty can really come in handy in order to save space in your toiletry bag. So consider moisturizers that also include serum or sunscreen to take care of multiple needs with one product.

TourScoop recommends:  Travel-sized moisturizers from  Olay ,  e.l.f. ,  Paula’s Choice , and  Jack Black  are reliable and affordable options to stash in your travel toiletry kit.

6. Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Leave home without a toothbrush and toothpaste and you’ve got a problem. But if you’re like me, you probably already have the duo stashed in your travel toiletry bag.

For easiest transport, get a travel holder to store a regular-size toothbrush or choose a travel brush that flips down into its own case to protect your brush from dirt and debris. To really save space, you can opt for disposable, pre-pasted mini brushes that you can toss out after using.

TourScoop recommends:   GUM ,  Colgate ,  Crest , and  Lingito  all offer good travel-friendly oral-care products. I also love the extra-soft but very effective toothbrushes from Nimbus , which come in both compact and kid sizes, both of which are great for travel.

7. Shaving Supplies

man in wheelchair getting ready to shave at the bathroom sink

The TSA allows  disposable razors  in both carry-on and checked luggage. You can find lots of options, from the usual plastic ones you might use at home to mini-versions that come with their own traveling cases. Shaving creams and gels come in small tubes and cans for easy portability and in a variety of formulations and scents. In a pinch, I’ve also used the hotel conditioner or body gel as a shaving cream substitute.

TourScoop recommends:  For disposable razors,  Gillette ,  Gillette Venus , and  Bic  all offer good options. For travel-sized shaving creams and gels, I like  eos ,  Harry’s ,  Cremo ,  Jack Black , and  Gillette .

8. Basic Medicines

You never know what might happen when you travel. So having some basic all-purpose medicines in your travel toiletry kit can be a good idea.

WOMEN TRAVELING TOGETHER: 9 Tour Companies for Women’s-Only Tours

Pain relievers, allergy medicines, antacids, and motion-sickness relief meds are all good things to have on hand. Leave the big bottles and packages at home and use a travel pill holder to help corral and separate the different pills and tablets.

TourScoop recommends:  Stay organized and ready for anything with travel pill holders from  Vera Bradley ,  Cadence ,  Port and Polish , and  Meacolia .

9. Sunscreen

woman in an orange tank top putting on sunscreen and smiling

Whether you’re  traveling through Europe  or headed to the beach, you need to pack sunscreen. It’s something you’ll want to put on every morning and ideally reapply throughout the day.

Travel-sized sunscreen comes in liquid, stick, spray, and even brush-and wipe-on formulations, so there are lots of options to find the best choice for you and your travels. You may even want to choose more than one and put one in your travel toiletry bag and one in your purse or backpack.

TourScoop recommends:   Supergoop ,  Sun Bum ,  Aveeno , and  Coola  offer well-rated sunscreens sized for travelers.

10. Hairbrush/Comb

You might need to streamline your hair-styling routine when you’re on the road. But you don’t need to totally give up. Smaller-sized hairbrushes and combs still get the job done without taking up lots of space in your travel toiletry bag. And some options work well on wet and dry hair, eliminating the need for multiple styling tools.

TourScoop recommends:  I’m a fan of the travel-sized options from  Wet Brush ,  Conair , and  Goody .

A Note on Toiletry Kits

I’ve outlined what to put in your toiletry kit, but what about the kit itself? There are so many options, ranging from leather to lightweight and pouch to hanging case. And there’s benefits to each: hanging toiletries kits keep surfaces clear but mean you have to find a spot to hang it, which isn’t always next to the sink. Kits made from heavier materials look elegant and provide protection for what’s inside, but add weight to a bag. Before you settle on one, take some time to look and options and think about what’s going to work best for you. There’s no one right option.

The 8 Best Travel Toiletry Bags Professional Travelers Recommend and Use Themselves

travel toilet kit items

There are certain necessities that can make traveling a little easier: a suitcase , or if you’re packing light, a carry-on , and maybe even packing cubes if you want to maximize your luggage space. And whether you’re planning a spontaneous weekend trip or vacation , you’ll also want a travel toiletry bag to keep your beauty and personal-care items all in one place while preventing the risk of a toiletry explosion when in transit.

You don’t have to look very far to find a toiletry kit: There area lot of options to choose from, but to help you narrow down your choices, I spoke to well-traveled people for tips on selecting the best travel toiletry bag for every type of jet-setter. Below are eight toiletry bags that professional travelers recommend and use themselves when they’re on the move.

  • 01 what to look for
  • 02 best travel toiletry bags
  • Abigail A. , solo travel expert and travel blogger at The Lady Who Travels
  • Kesi Irvin , travel writer and blogger behind Kesi To and Fro
  • Kim Tate , travel writer and blogger behind Stuffed Suitcase
  • Nneya Richards , travel and lifestyle journalist
  • Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon , on-air travel host, journalist, and blogger at JetSetSarah

What to look for in a travel toiletry bag

Material: When looking for a travel toiletry bag, first think about the material. “A bag that’s easy to clean will last you a long longer,” says New York-based travel journalist Nneya Richards . Richards recommends materials like nylon or neoprene, which are water-resistant. Kim Tate , the Seattle-based travel writer and blogger behind Stuffed Suitcase , prefers options made from vinyl, a material that is durable and more often than not waterproof.

{{post.sponsorText}}

Size and weight: You’ll also want a travel toiletry bag with enough room for the toiletries you’re taking with you. A small toiletry bag will save you space, but if you’re packing larger toiletries or for a longer trip, you may want to opt for a larger kit—keeping in mind that it will take up more room in your bag. Size aside, select something lightweight; many of the options on this list are less than half a pound when empty.

Additional features: Finally, consider the additional features that’ll make traveling easier. For example, a toiletry bag with a hook or handle will allow you to hang it up and maximize counter space, while one with transparent panels can offer a clear view of your essentials for easy access. Some also offer organizational options, like compartments, pockets, or even separate pouches to keep your things in order.

Whatever your preference, there’s something for every type of traveler on this list. Scroll on for the eight best toiletry bags, as recommended by well-traveled experts.

Shop the best travel toiletry bags

Nomatic Toiletry Bag 2.0

Material: Not specified | Size: 10.5” L x 5” W x 1.7” H (Small) and 10.5” L x 5” W x 3.1” H (Standard) | Weight: 9.5 oz. (Small) and 11.3 oz. (Regular)

Nomatic is a favorite brand of Kesi Irvin , travel writer and owner of the online travel blog Kesi To and Fro , and its toiletry bag has the one thing she typically looks for in a kit—a hanging component. “If I’m moving around from place to place, I like having the option to hang my toiletry bag up so I can see all the products I have,” she shares. The bag boasts a convenient hanging strap to help you save counter space while on your trip and several zippered pockets to neatly store your items. Plus, its narrow profile will allow you to squeeze it into your suitcase without compromising packing space. While the manufacturer doesn’t specify the material of the bag, it’s designed to be water-resistant. It comes in two sizes, and, as an added bonus, a lifetime warranty.

Available colors: 1

  • Water-resistant material
  • Internal zip pockets
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Only one color option

eBags Pack-It-Flat Toiletry Kit

Material: Nylon | Size: 14” L x 9.25” W x 2.2” H | Weight: 10 oz.

Tate has long relied on this toiletry bag on her travels. “It has a very slim profile that won’t take up much luggage space,” she explains. While unassuming in size and appearance, it has spacious internal compartments that can hold enough for shorter or longer excursions—something to which Tate can personally attest. “It has a zipper compartment on the left, where I would keep all my skincare products, a larger zipper compartment in the middle for my deodorant and larger items, and then two zipper compartments on the right to hold my toothpaste and eye-care products,” she says. To add to its functionality, it has a hook and removable pocket mirror.

Available colors: 4

  • Slim profile
  • Spacious internal compartments
  • Can’t stand upright on its own

Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

Material: Neoprene | Size: 7.5” L x 4” W x 4.5” H (Small) and 9” L x 4.75” W x 5.5” H (Large) | Weight: 5 oz. (Small) and 7 oz. (Large)

I use and love this Dagne Dover toiletry bag. While I’m by no means a travel expert, it’s withstood years of long road trips and international journeys. The bag is made from water-resistant neoprene to contain spills, and it has a sturdy structure and multiple compartments to keep my things from jostling around. Plus, it zips open—and stays open—for easy access. I own the large version, which has enough space for all my beauty and personal-care products, with compartments to keep things like my razor and toothbrush from touching. A bonus: The large version comes with two additional pouches, while the smaller version includes one pouch, and both come in several stylish colors.

If anything, the bag neither has a hook nor a handle to hang it with—and if this is important to you, you might prefer the Seoul Dopp Kit , which has the stamp of approval from Richards. This particular product is made from water-resistant nylon, and it features a swivel hook and multiple storage compartments. You can shop it in two sizes and four colors, including black, gray, green, and pink.

Available colors: 9

  • Multiple interior compartments
  • Comes with additional pouches for storage
  • No hanging component

Queboom Travel Makeup Bag

Material: Not specified | Size: 9” L x 6” W x 3.1”H (Standard) and 9.4” L x 7” W x 5.5” H (Large) | Weight: 5.3 oz.

If you’re looking for something more affordable, this travel-friendly toiletry bag offers some of the convenient features of pricier options at a lower cost. It also comes recommended by Abigail A. of the blog The Lady Who Travels . It’s made from a waterproof material, and it offers a considerable space for your beauty products and a separate compartment for makeup brushes. The kit comes in two sizes: a smaller, more travel-friendly design and a larger model with more storage space, or for a few more dollars, you can purchase it as a set of two. With 12 colors, you’re sure to find an option to match your personal style. The bag folds flat when not in use to conserve space, but it also lacks the structure and compartments of most options on this list—a tradeoff for the price.

Available colors: 12

  • Separate compartment for makeup brushes
  • Folds flat when not in use
  • Minimal organizational compartments

Bagsmart Toiletry Bag

Material: Not specified | Size: 10.2” L x 4.3” W x 6.3” H (Basic), 11.8” L x 7” W x 7” H (Standard), 11.8” L x ” 5.9 x 7” H (Large) | Weight: 5.6 oz. (Basic), 10.2 (Standard), 11.7 oz. (Large)

Another recommendation from A. is this toiletry bag from Bagsmart. It’s made from a water-resistant material, and it comes in three sizes, with the standard- and large-size options boasting a separate compartment with elastic loops to hold smaller or more slender items, such as a toothbrush, razor, or makeup brushes. Each of the three options have interior mesh pockets, along with a large exterior zippered pocket lined with a waterproof layer that is great for breakable and spill-prone products. The bag is well-structured too, with a wide base that keeps it upright and prevents it from tipping over even when full. Shop it in four solid colors, including black, navy blue, pink, and gray.

  • Waterproof exterior pocket
  • Multiple organizational compartments
  • Limited colors

The Daily Edit Black Clear Travel Case

Originally $99, now $50

Material: PVC (with leather trim) | Size: 8.4” L x 3.3” W” x 3.3” H | Weight: Not specified

Travel journalist and TV host Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon of JetSetSarah recommends and uses this pick from The Daily Edit, which meets all her requirements of a good travel toiletry bag: it is transparent to offer a clear view of packed items; it has a zipper that runs all around the three sides of the bag for easy access; and it is durable to withstand repeated usage. “As an added bonus, you can personalize it,” she says, and you can have the letters of your choosing stamped onto the bag. The bag, constructed from PVC, opens up to two roomy compartments, one of which has an elastic strap to secure smaller items in place. The bag is finished with a black leather trim and gold hardware, and though it only comes in one size, Greaves-Gabbadon says is ideal for carry-on travel.

  • Water-resistant construction
  • Offers a clear view of contents
  • Personalizable
  • Only one size and color

Truffle Clarity Jetset Case

Material: PVC (with leather or nylon trim) | Size: 2.5” L x 7.5” W x 2” H (Mini), 5.2” L x 7.5” W x 2” H (Standard), 6” L x 9” W x 2” H (Large), and 6” L x 9” W x 3.” 3.75” H (Jumbo) | Weight: Not specified

Truffle Co.’s toiletry bags come in four sizes, the most of our picks of the list—and they are recommended by Greaves-Gabbadon. Like the previous recommendation, the bag features transparent windows so you can instantly see what’s inside and a zipper that runs around three sides. Plus, the standard option is just the right size for liquids and gels that comply with the TSA 3-1-1 rules . Size aside, you can choose between a leather and nylon trim and several eye-catching colors for each of the available options. The biggest downside to this bag is the lack of compartments to keep items separate and in place, but if you typically pack light, it shouldn’t be much of an issue for you.

Available colors: 8

  • TSA-friendly design
  • Available in four sizes
  • No internal organization

Anya Hindmarch In-Flight Case

Material: Plastic | Size: 3.1” L x 8.4” W x 4.5” H | Weight: Not specified

Anya Hindmarch is known for creating stylish, albeit pricey, storage systems. If money is no object and you’re looking to organize the contents of your carry-on, consider the In-Flight Case, which started Greaves-Gabbadon’s “lust” for travel toiletry bags. The water-resistant bag, made specifically for carry-on use, is fully transparent for easy visibility and features two roomy compartments with zippers that run along the three sides of the bag. According to Greaves-Gabbadon, each section is equivalent in size to a quart-size Ziploc bag to carry 3.4-ounce liquids and gels on board an airplane without risking confiscation by TSA. If you visit the brand’s website, you can also personalize the bag with a phrase or your name—it’ll just cost you a bit extra.

Available colors: 5

  • Water-proof material with waterproof fabric lining
  • Roomy interior

Best Toiletry Bag for Any Trip | Dopp Kit for Travel

Whether you like a lot of pockets or prefer to toss everything together, we’ve got the best toiletry bag for you.

REI Logo

When heading out on a trip, whether for a few days or weeks, you’ll need somewhere to store your shampoo and soap. And while your travel backpack might come with a plethora of pockets where you can stash every comb, toothbrush, and lip balm, you may want to reach for a separate pouch to carry it all, whether you call it a Dopp kit or a toiletry bag.

What's the difference between the two? Not really anything but a trademark. Leatherworker Charles Doppelt patented the term in 1919 and began marketing his leather toiletry bags as such before landing a contract with the U.S. Army during World War II to provide every soldier with a Dopp Kit. The name stuck when the G.I. Joes came home since it was more appealing than “toilet bag,” though the terms can be used interchangeably.

History lesson over, we’ll misquote Shakespeare to point out that a bag to store your toiletries is essential no matter what you call it. We prefer putting a barrier between potentially-leaking liquids and smearing soaps and clothing, so we look for bags that will contain any messes and make it easy for you to find what you need while getting ready for the day’s adventures.

We’ve teamed up with REI to bring you this roundup since it’s a great place to start your search for gear, whether it’s clothing, a new bag, or other travel essentials. You can get even more from the store when you become an REI Co-op member , including an average of 10% back annually on eligible purchases, free shipping, and a generous return policy. Members also get access to the Re/Supply store, where you can choose from returned gear that’s been thoroughly inspected. Or, trade in your used items for other members to enjoy!

So, without further ado, let’s dive in!

Matador FlatPak Zipper Toiletry Case Table

We can’t think of many worse things than rushing to repack on the last morning of vacation and arriving home to find our clothing damp because we didn’t remember to dry out our toiletry bottles after showering. If this has happened to you, avoid it next time with Matador’s FlatPak Zippered Toiletry Case.

If you’re familiar with Matador’s other FlatPak products, the Zippered Toiletry Case has the same dry-through technology that lets water evaporate through the fabric while the exterior stays dry. While the material is waterproof, the bag itself is not since some liquid could still sneak through the hole at the end of the zipper. However, it should contain most spills, and if you prefer a zipperless design, you can check out the rolltop Matador FlatPak Toiletry Case.

The 2.25-liter pouch has no internal organization, but that means you’ll have no problem tossing bottles of nearly any size inside—unless you’re trying to travel with a family-sized bottle of shampoo, that is. We tested this on a road trip, and if you don’t have to worry about 3-1-1 limits, it’s great to dump larger toiletries casually into the pouch—we prefer that there’s no built-in organization for this type of use case. When we need to follow TSA guidelines, we like that there’s plenty of room for every type of gel and lotion we want to bring, and we don’t need a separate bag for solids and other gear. Don’t worry if you don’t need to bring too much on a short trip, though. The toiletry bag’s gusseted design expands and contracts depending on what you’re packing, so you don’t need to switch to a smaller Dopp kit when traveling for a shorter time.

  • You don’t have to worry about tossing your damp bottles back in the bag since they can dry through the material
  • The gusseted design is excellent, allowing the pouch’s size to expand and contract based on the items inside
  • Air escapes through the zipper, so it’s not completely waterproof
  • There’s no internal organization

Nite Ize Runoff Waterproof Toiletry Bag

Many toiletry bags tout water resistance, but not all of them are so waterproof they can float off the side of your boat. The Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Toiletry Bag can, though, so if you want to wash up in the lake with marine-friendly soap, go for it!

There’s no internal organization in this 3-liter toiletry bag, so it’s got enough space for full-size gear if you don’t have to worry about staying under the 3.4-ounce limit for TSA. The TPU material will keep liquids from escaping onto your other travel gear with help from the waterproof TRU Zip, so you don’t have to worry if your sunscreen bottle splits at the seam. That said, like many waterproof zippers, we find this one a bit stiff to work around the corners and its placement on the front of the bag limits accessibility. The silver lining is that it also stays put if you only undo it partway. There’s a large nylon loop at the end we use to hang the bag up in the hotel bathroom, and since it’s the same end where the zipper begins, it’s easy to open it part of the way to pull out shampoo before heading into the shower.

Oh, and if you want it to float, just blow a little air inside and zip it shut. Just be careful not to get your lips caught in the zipper—not that it’s ever happened to us!

  • You can protect your small toiletries in a waterproof pouch, keeping them dry and containing any spills from getting on your clothing
  • The zipper stays put, so you can access gear while it’s hanging without other items falling out
  • The zipper is slow to get around corners, and smudges show
  • TPU materials are a little noisy

Green Guru Upcycled Sleep Pad Travel Kit Review

If you like adopting shelter pets and feel like you’re saving books from feeling rejected when you pick them up at the secondhand store, this might be the best toiletry bag for you. The note attached to the Upcycled Sleep Pad Travel Kit tells the sweet story of a sleeping pad that can no longer hold air taken in by REI and paired up with its bicycle tube and climbing rope friends to be given new life as your toiletry bag. Aww!

True to its roots, this toiletry bag feels super sturdy, especially on the underside where it rests on salvaged rubber bicycle tube material. We have no worries when we plop this down next to a wet sink, that’s for sure. The handle is the same material, so it’s easy to grab from your travel backpack and hang on a hook in the bathroom. The pre-loved sleeping pad material on the top and inside is bright and cheery, and we’ve never had an issue with it getting mixed up with our travel companion’s gear.

Although there’s no organization inside the Travel Kit, there is a lot of space. We can fit a variety of travel-sized bottles, a hairbrush, toothbrush and paste, makeup, and more in here, and the 10-inch length will even accommodate some full-size bottles when we head out on a camping trip instead of carrying it on an airplane. It’s great that we can pull the salvaged rope zipper pull open partway while it’s hanging to get gear at the top or lie it flat to dive in and find toothpaste tabs. Either way, the colorful liner makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.

  • Made from repurposed sleeping pads, tire tubes, and climbing rope salvaged from REI, you can feel good about the sustainability of this kit
  • It packs down small when not in use
  • Since it’s all repurposed materials, you can’t choose the colorway, so you may want to pass if bright colors aren’t your thing
  • The zipper doesn’t feel as durable as the rest of kit

Gravel Explore MINI Toiletry Bag Review

The best toiletry bag for a short trip isn’t always the biggest, which is why we’re reaching for the Gravel Explorer MINI Toiletry Bag when we want to get away for a day or three. It’s a Pack Hacker Pick , so not only do we recommend this bag to our friends, it’s what we pack, too. The 1-liter capacity is enough space for the small bottles of toiletries you’ll need, and it has two compartments so you can keep your toothbrush separate from bottles that could sit on the counter of a strange bathroom or have soapy residue from the shower. However, we have to mention that the back-to-back layout means only one side can be accessed at a time.

On the toothbrush side, the fabric is a thinner water-resistant shell, both inside and out, which is great for containing the dampness that occurs when you want to brush before catching a morning flight home. Both regular- and travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste fit inside, although you’ll have to take the head off an electric toothbrush if that’s how you roll.

Gravel uses its QuarryPoly—a water-repellant, scratch-resistant, easy-to-clean material— for the main compartment, which has enough room for deodorant, lotion, face wash, eye drops, and a travel razer. If you don’t already own refillable toiletry bottles, the Gravel Soft 3 oz Liquid Bottles are compatible with the Explorer MINI, but other containers work well, too.

A silicone strap makes it easy to hang up the pouch at your accommodations, and it’s always nice when you can save space around a small hotel sink. It's easy to pack, too, since its size and shape fit perfectly in the odd spaces left near the top of your travel backpack or in the long space next to telescoping handles inside rolling luggage.

  • You can hang this up in the hotel bathroom, or off the outside of your travel backpack, for easy access to your gear
  • The adjustable strap is easy to loop onto bars and racks
  • If you open both zippers at once, accessing gear on one side can lead to your gear spilling out on the other
  • The compartments eat into each other’s space

Aer Travel Kit 2 Review

We loved the durable materials, internal organization, and hanging hook of the original Aer Travel Kit , and unlike some movie sequels, we think the second iteration is even better. The main compartment layout and the way it can hang from the built-in hook remains, which is great for getting it off of tiny hotel sinks. Aer also kept the kangaroo-style shelf design, elastic loops, zippered mesh pocket, and toothbrush slots. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

Changes include adding an extra toothbrush pocket on the outside of the kit. We like standing up our toothbrush to dry without sacrificing a towel to protect the head from germs on the countertop, and now our travel companion’s brush is safe, too. When we fly solo, it does the same for your razor—although you won’t want to leave either one there when you fly home. Instead, slide it in a horizontal garage in the main compartment. There’s also a beefier carry handle, but it’s rougher feeling than the seatbelt-like one on the original Travel Kit. We do prefer the softer material of the original, but considering the secondary purpose of the handle, the difference is only minimal.

As for organization, a slim front pocket is great for anything you need to grab while you’re traveling, like tissues or wet wipes, while the rear compartment is roomier for a first-aid kit, makeup compacts, or anything else you want.

The main compartment has a super stretchy mesh pocket in its top half for tiny travel accessories and a slip pocket that hides the hanging hook. On the bottom, you can vertically slide travel-size bottles in elastic loops in one pouch, although they’re not very grippy for smaller bottles. While the elastic loops could seem overkill, they keep everything in place, even when you’re running to catch a train.

  • From a hanging hook to a toothbrush garage, this kit has features that come together for a great user experience
  • It has spacious, shelf-like organization
  • Internal elastic loops struggle to store a range of toiletry bottle sizes
  • It tends to swing around its hinged hook

Bellroy Toiletry Kit In Bathroom

Keep everything organized in a sleek-looking package when you reach for the Bellroy Dopp Kit. The polyester and nylon materials are water-resistant. We’re digging this water-resistance, particularly on the interior, as it helps you keep everything spic and span. And you don’t have to worry about ruining your bag when packing away your wet toiletries post-shower. However, the logo and zipper pull are leather, which looks great but may not be for you if you’re avoiding animal products. The leather has been tanned under Leather Working Group environmental protocols, though, so that’s a good shout, although the rounded edges can make it tricky to pack in some spaces.

But enough about the outside; we like the equally luxurious mesh pockets inside where you can slide a few bottles or your contact lens case to make it easier to find later. It also has a unique magnetic toothbrush sleeve that snaps your dental gear out of the way after you’ve polished your pearly whites. During the day, we like to leave the sleeve open to let the head of our brush dry, and it also works well for a razor if you want to toss your toothbrush elsewhere.

If you have a lot of differently-shaped bottles and tubes, you might think this is the best Dopp kit since the remaining space is open for interpretation. While the minimal organization won’t be enough for those who like everything to have a specific place, we find it pretty perfect.

  • A super sophisticated Dopp kit that has just the right amount of organization without taking up too much space
  • The toothbrush sleeve is a game-changer
  • It has leather accents, so it may not be for you if you avoid animal products
  • Toiletries may get jumbled when you hang it up

L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag Review

There are enough pockets and pouches on the L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag to help you sort all your travel toiletries, plus some of your friend’s. However, you'll have to remember where you put everything (which we find difficult when we’re getting ready for a red-eye flight home!). Each side has a zipper pocket that includes small mesh pockets and elastic loops, which we use for toothbrushes or razors. We find the front pocket better for short and slim gear because taller items make it more challenging to close the main compartment.

When you unzip this toiletry bag, you’ll find a large swivel hook you can use to hang the bag from a towel rack or a hook, and since the nylon packcloth exterior is water-resistant, it doesn’t matter if you splash it accidentally. Two pockets at the top are plasticky to contain liquids, so we use them for shampoo, makeup, and sunscreen. The top one is clear so you can see what’s inside, and we like that there’s a mirror that attaches to it with a hook-and-loop fastener. It comes in handy when we need to get ready outside the bathroom, and since it’s removable, you can use it to check the back of your hair. The one pocket underneath is more barrel-shaped to take advantage of available space when you zip the bag shut.

The main area has space for taller bottles in two mesh pockets and a removable shower caddy to bring the essentials with you. It includes its own hook so we can hang our soap and shampoo in the shower if there are no available shelves in the hostel or Airbnb. The material dries quickly, so you can repack it into the Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag in the evening to be ready for the next day.

  • It has lots of granular organization that takes advantage of all the available space and a removable shower caddy
  • We can fit enough gear for several days
  • It can be hard to zip down the front flap if you pack something tall inside
  • The organizer struggles to stand upright on a countertop

Osprey Ultralight Roll Organizer Review

If you’re looking for a way to keep your gear under wraps, why not opt for a kit with all the benefits of a burrito but better internal organization? While this isn’t the best toiletry bag if you need a dedicated 3-1-1 bag, we like to use it to hold solids, tools, and everything else we need to get ready in the morning on a trip. We think the folding concept is a neat way to stow a ton of gear inside a small package, and the diamond ripstop nylon, YKK buckles, and zippers are really durable. Everything looks just as great as they did the day we got it, even after a few week’s worth of use.

The inside is broken up into three larger sections and one small area, with a hook at the top we use to hang it on the back of the bathroom door. The top mesh pocket includes a mirror, and both it and the middle pocket have gussets to fit more oblong-shaped items like facial or hair care products or a larger razor with a charging cable. Below the middle pocket are two small stretchy mesh pockets that zip closed and are the perfect size for smaller items like travel toothpaste or cotton swabs. The lowest pocket is the largest. It's the same 40D nylon ripstop as the exterior, so it’s more water-resistant and works for more liquid-like toiletries, though it’s not waterproof.

  • The four separate pockets give you a lot of places to store and organize gear
  • The tri-fold is easy to open and close, even when fully packed
  • Hanging hook doesn’t have a clip to hold it in place
  • The materials aren’t waterproof, so liquids can seep through

Aer Dopp Kit 3 Handle

If you’re looking for the best Dopp kit and love Aer’s aesthetic, why not go with one from your favorite brand? We don’t think you’ll be disappointed because this one has a slimmer design that fits nicely into a small daypack or your favorite travel backpack. While the overhead clearance is a little low, forcing you to squeeze taller travel-sized toiletries inside, the capacity feels otherwise the same from the second iteration.

The Dopp Kit 3 ditches the front compartment, however, in favor of a clamshell design that keeps most of your toiletries at a glance and within easy reach. The front pocket has a self-locking YKK zipper that we like to use to leave a small opening for a toothbrush to dry out. It’s also great for wet wipes, tweezers, cotton swabs, and hair pins. Inside the main compartment, we use the wide pocket at the back for toiletry bottles, two elastic loops for a comb and razor, and a small zippered (non-mesh) pocket for tiny travel accessories. The zippered mesh pocket at the front is perfect for everything else, from containers of cream to nail clippers and other tools. Overall, we find it a great layout for weekend and week-long trips, depending on how much gear you need to bring.

  • Its balanced capacity feels right for trips lasting from a few days to a week
  • The slim profile is easy to squeeze into tightly-packed bags
  • Some capacity has been cut from the previous version
  • The elastic loops are too big for a standard toothbrush

Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Cube Review

When you’re getting ready to hop on a flight and want to pave the way for a smooth experience at TSA, you’ll want the best toiletry bag to get your gear through security. We like the clear design of the TOM BIHN 3D Organizer Cube for that, and also because it’s easier to find what you need to grab when bleary-eyed in the morning. It has a slim design that’s excellent for minimalist packing, although the relatively small size does mean you’re limited to 1 liter’s worth of travel-sized bottles. You’ll likely have to find another place for longer toothbrushes and standard-size hairbrushes, too. That said, we’ve been able to get all of our toiletries—even non-liquids—into this thing for a long weekend trip, so it ultimately comes down to how many products your routine requires.

On the other hand, the transparent urethane is easy to clean in case of spills and is thicker than a zip-top bag. It’s surrounded by ballistic nylon that you can get in various colors if you prefer to match your travel backpack. And unlike something you get at the grocery store, it has a hook to hang on the towel rod or a hook, which we find super convenient in hotels with tiny bathroom sinks. Plus, there are O-rings on each side, so you can attach a shoulder strap to carry it to the campground or hostel bathroom or to connect it to other TOM BIHN bags.

  • The slim design makes it great for minimalist packing
  • You don’t need a separate 3-1-1 bag to go through TSA
  • Everyone can see all of your gear (and stains) inside
  • It’s not large enough for longer toothbrushes, so you have to use one that’s travel size

Away Small Toiletry Bag Usage 1

Style isn’t always something we prioritize in a toiletry bag, but when renting an Airbnb with friends, it’s nice to have something you don’t mind other people seeing. It’s small and stylish enough to carry around, and the leather carry handle is comfortable enough to do so. But it’s not just a pretty face; the nylon material holds up well against splashes and spills, so it’s OK to set it down on a damp counter.

It has enough space for a weekend trip, and the organization makes it easy to find what you need. An exterior slip pocket is perfect for wipes, tissues, and cotton swabs, and the bag opens up completely clamshell so you can see all your gear at once. On the top half of the Small Toiletry Bag is a see-through zippered compartment that we loaded with travel bottles of liquid soap, shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste. We can fit four travel bottles inside, and seeing them side by side is rather satisfying. On the bottom half is a mesh-covered compartment where you can dump all make-up tools and tubes of concealers, lotions, sunscreens, and ointments. While there is a fair amount of depth to both halves of the main compartment, travel-sized tubes and canisters still work best if you want to maximize all of the available space, and we’re happy to report that the black interior liner does a good job of hiding stains if a bottle opens en route.

  • The deep pockets are well-suited for storage
  • It’s well-structured with a water-resistant outer shell
  • There’s no option to hang it up to save counter space
  • The slip pocket is only suited for small, thin items

Topo Designs Dopp Kit Tech Pouch

Sometimes, the best Dopp kit is simply the one that won’t tip over on the counter and fall into the sink. When that’s what you’re looking for, we recommend the Topo Designs Dopp Kit because its triangular base helps it to stand upright wherever you set it down. Its spacious interior will fit plenty of stuff, although it lacks interior pockets to keep it organized. It has the rugged vibe we know and love from Topo Designs, with a tough 1000D CORDURA® fabric exterior and a 400D coated nylon Packcloth liner. It’s held closed with a YKK No. 5 zipper, which is beefy enough for peace of mind but not as huge as on some other Topo bags. As always, we like the paracord pull on the end because it makes it easy to zip it closed. Plus, it’s bright red, so it’s easy to spot even if you’re getting ready in the dark.

Inside is a cavernous space lined with bright yellow fabric. We have no trouble spotting bobby pins on the bottom of the bag or finding our favorite lip balm inside the nearly-neon interior. That’s good because, without internal organization, you have to dig through your gear to find what you’re looking for. While we would’ve appreciated a pocket or two, the pouch’s triangular shape, easy access, and overall durability mean it’s still a solid pouch that should serve you well for years while still looking brand new.

  • It stands on its own, so it won’t fall off the sink counter
  • The durable materials still look as great as the day we bought it
  • There’s no interior organization, so you’ll have to dig through your gear
  • It’s larger than other Dopp kits, which is a plus or a minus depending on your perspective

Peak Design Small Wash Pouch Plant

If you’re looking for a hanging Dopp kit with shelf-like organization and a small footprint, the Peak Design Small Wash Pouch is the best toiletry bag for you. It has features similar to its larger sibling, the Wash Pouch, but in a 1-liter design. It has accordion-like, rubbery mesh partitions in an X-shape that help organize our gear into different areas to keep our solid lotion separate from our shampoo and conditioner and slide in a razor where it won't touch our travel toothbrush and paste. The dividers serve as shelving when you use the hook to hang it up, but because the sections are not very deep, you’ll have to be careful not to bump it while it hangs, or your gear can fall out.

It has a triangular side profile, with more room at the bottom than the top, similar to other standing pouches, all wrapped up with 200D nylon coated with a DWR to ward off most stains and splashes. It’s easy to open with the grippy pull on the Zoom zipper, and the hook stows away in a slip pocket until you need it. However, it can slip out if you overpack the bag. When carrying it into the bathroom, a small piece of overhanging fabric acts as a de facto handle. While it takes a little getting used to, we really liked it once we did.

  • The wide access through the gusseted opening makes it easy to find your gear
  • We love the option to hang it up off the counter
  • Be careful not to overstuff it when it's hanging or you’ll find it hard to rezip
  • It wobbles when standing if packed tightly

So whether you prefer plentiful organization or extra open space, we think you’ll find the best toiletry bag for you somewhere on this list. You may be heading to visit a new city or take in the sweeping vistas of a national park, but no matter where you travel, check out REI before packing. Travel + Leisure / Tamara Staples

There are a few things every traveler needs, no matter where in the world they're going — and a toiletry bag is one of them. The humble case might be an afterthought to some, but these helpful bags are crucial to keeping your travel essentials organized.

We tested 58 toiletry bags and cosmetic cases (and will continue to test them for a period of at least six months) in order to bring to you the best of the best, evaluating their capacity, design, portability, and value. We also considered the overall quality of the bags, as well as their ease of use on real trips.

Taking our test results into consideration, we've put together a list of the best toiletry bags across various categories; you’re sure to find one that suits your needs.

Best Overall

Away large toiletry bag.

This bag holds more than you'd expect from just looking at it.

The limited edition colors often sell out fast.

You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. The interior of the bag is coated with an easy-to-wipe material, allowing you to clean up any spills quickly. The bag comes in five color options (with limited edition colorways offered on occasion), as well as a smaller size option and a hanging version of the bag.

Most Packable

Aer travel kit 2.

Not only is it packable, but you can hang it up to save counter space at your destination.

Its more petite size means that it's not ideal for full-size toiletries.

Hello, carry-on-only travelers! This toiletry bag by Aer offers the best of both worlds: it's compact enough to stash in your carry-on or personal item, but it's spacious enough to hold all your toiletries. During our tests, we were able to fit hairspray, dry shampoo, conditioner, lotions, deodorant, a small electric toothbrush, toothpaste, perfume, toner, and medications in this bag. Of course, being that this bag is so compact, they were all travel-size products , not full-size ones.

We also loved that this toiletry kit has a hook that you can twist at different angles, making it easy to hang on doorknobs, towel racks, or bathroom bars to save counter space. And we appreciated the fact that it has several interior and exterior pockets for further organization.

Best Waterproof

Line+arc the dopp kit.

This large bag fits just about everything, including large eyeshadow palettes.

It's a bit bulky — and fairly heavy when full.

You might be wondering why you need a waterproof toiletry bag, since it's usually tucked into a larger bag when you're traveling. The answer is simple: bathroom sinks. Toiletry bags often sit on wet surfaces, so it's not a bad idea to invest in a waterproof model like this one by Line+Arc. Though the bag has a loop for hanging, we felt comfortable leaving it on the sink due to its waterproofing, which we found to be particularly effective.

Beyond its waterproof material, we were impressed by this toiletry bag's spaciousness — we could even fit an eyeshadow palette the size of a small book inside — and more specifically, for its wide-open mouth, which allowed us to access everything with ease. Of course, because it's so large, it did get a little bulky and heavy when we packed it full, so it might be best for checked or carry-on suitcases instead of smaller personal items or weekender bags.

The Details: 11 x 6.5 x 3.5 | 1.2 pounds | 3.5-liter capacity | Silicone | Waterproof

Best Organization

Peak design wash pouch.

The bag is lined with high-density foam for extra protection.

It would be nice if there were more colors to choose from.

When you have a large number of toiletries to bring with you on vacation, the best thing you can do is choose a toiletry bag that helps you keep everything organized. This is that bag! Though it appears small from the outside, the bag is so thoughtfully designed with organizational tools — we found that there's a pocket for just about everything. The main compartment is large enough to fit small bottles, while mesh pockets of various sizes line the walls, so you can tuck in your favorite tinted moisturizer , for example. There's also a separate pocket for your travel toothbrush , which keeps it nice and clean.

Other highlights include a wide opening to access each pocket easily and the ability to stand on its own thanks to the bag's layer of high-density foam that also helps protect the items inside. It also has a handy hanging hook if you'd prefer to keep some counter space clear.

The Details: 10.2 x 6 x 4.4 inches | 8.7 ounces | 2.5-liter capacity | 200D nylon canvas | Weatherproof

Best Dopp Kit

Beis the dopp kit in atlas pink.

It's extraordinarily spacious and capable of holding what three standard-size toiletry bags can carry.

You can only open one compartment at a time.

What’s a dopp kit, anyway? Though the term is used interchangeably with toiletry bag today, the dopp kit was originally devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt and was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this Béis bag: a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

Béis' dopp kit, however, has an extra compartment beneath the main one (like the well-known Béis weekender bag ). On the plus side, we absolutely love having all this extra space. In our tests, we were able to fit the capacity of three standard toiletry bags into this one. So if you're an overpacker, this is the bag for you. Note that you can only open one compartment at a time, though — the top one needs to be closed if you open the bottom one, otherwise all your items will fall out. But a big pro to this setup is that it's a very sturdy dopp kit, and it stands alone with ease, thanks to its wide base.

Best for Men

Bagsmart toiletry bag for men.

It opens wide with a double zipper.

It's made of canvas, which may be hard to clean but is water-resistant.

Fun fact: dopp kits were originally designed for men so it makes perfect sense why this one is designed to fit shaving and grooming products in particular. It's made of canvas for a rough-and-tumble look, and it's offered in six colors (mostly neutrals, but also light pink) and two sizes. Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to stuff into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

The Details: 10.2 x 5.9 x 6.3 inches | 6.4 ounces | Canvas | Water-resistant

Best Hanging Bag

Sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

Small and lightweight, it's perfectly portable.

It has to hang as it won't stand up on its own.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultrathin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multiday trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. The toiletry bag comes in two sizes (we tested the smaller one) and three color options.

The Details: 9 x 6 x 3 inches (small); 10 x 9 x 4 inches (large) | 2.8 ounces (small); 4 ounces (large) | 3-liter capacity (small); 6-liter capacity (large) | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

It's the most affordable option on this list and comes in more than 20 colors.

The main compartment only has one zipper, which makes it a little tough to retrieve items.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

The Details: 10.24 x 4.72 x 5.91 inches | 3.53 ounces | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best Splurge

Tumi response travel kit.

It opens like a clamshell for easy access.

The outer material is not water-resistant.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — it also makes high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon, this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we'd recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

The Details: 6.3 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches | 14.4 ounces | Ballistic nylon

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

The following three toiletry bags didn’t quite make our main list but still offer some handy features that some travelers might find useful.

Briggs & Riley Baseline Executive Essentials Kit : This fairly large toiletry bag can hold plenty — we had more than enough room for travel-size hair and skin care products for a weeklong trip. But the lack of interior organization makes it difficult to keep things in place. It might be better suited for carrying fewer larger products instead of numerous smaller ones.

Travel + Leisure / Ella Crosby

Thule Subterra 2 Toiletry Bag : This toiletry bag's standout feature is a removable plastic interior pouch, which you can use to keep liquids separate (a plus for going through airport security and to prevent leaks!). It also has various pockets to keep your things organized.

Travel + Leisure / Elizabeth Rhodes

Bagsmart Large Hanging Toiletry Bag : This hanging toiletry bag has four separate compartments to keep your belongings organized — and it has the capacity to hold many belongings, too. But it's not a particularly protective or durable bag with its softside material, which could be a problem for transporting certain products.

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

We tested 58 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab and during real-world tests to determine the best products to travel with. Testing started with an analysis of each bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

We packed each bag full with toiletries, makeup, and essentials, taking notes of the case’s capacity and organizational design features, such as compartments, pockets, hanging straps, and hooks. If the toiletry bag was advertised as waterproof, we held the bag under running water to see if anything inside got wet and how quickly the bag dried. We packed the toiletry bags into different types of travel bags to see how portable they felt, including weekenders , carry-ons, and checked luggage.

After our initial lab tests, we sent the toiletry bags home with editors to test for an additional six months on their real-world travels to gather further insights, including how durable they are.

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Some toiletry bags have additional features like built-in mirrors or removable pouches. Also consider the material: more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case. But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from heatless hair curlers to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.

For this article, she incorporated tester feedback and used her own experience with toiletry bags. While she often gravitates toward repurposing airline amenity kits as toiletry bags, she also rotates between Bagsmart, Container Store, and Monos toiletry bags (she particularly likes the latter, as the Mono Metro Kit attaches easily to the outside of the Monos Metro line of bags, saving space inside).

Should I Rely on Free Toiletries?

Free stuff is always good, right? Well, depends . Though your hotel or rental may have complimentary toiletries, the quality of those items can be a toss-up. Travelers with sensitive skin; curly, textured, or temperamental hair; or simply high standards shouldn’t rely on freebies. After a few nights of washing your face with a harsh, perfumed bar of soap, your skin may launch into red alert. The safest bet is to purchase some TSA-approved squeeze bottles and bring your own tried-and-true products. Or invest in buying travel-sized versions of your preferred brand. If you’re feeling frugal, you can always try to collect samples of your faves from various cosmetic counters or as a gift with purchase.

Where Should I Buy Toiletries?

We’ve all seen the travel section at the local drugstore. It’s a snooze. They carry the same basic brands. If you order items online, you can save yourself a trip to the store, save money, and shop a bigger range of brands. Here are our five favorite online retailers for toiletries with links to their toiletry sections.

  • Amazon.com – Best for Budget
  • Target.com – Best for Variety
  • Walmart.com – Best Bundles
  • Sephora.com – Best Luxury Brands
  • Ulta.com – Best for Makeup

How Do I Pack Liquid Toiletries?

The overlord of airport security (aka the TSA) sets limitations on flying with liquids. The rules are very specific and sometimes a bit hard to understand. No worries. We’ll break it down. Rules apply based on how you are handling your luggage, specifically if you’re checking a bag vs. carrying a bag on the plane.

Checked Bag

If your suitcase is checked, there are no limitations on liquids. Score! You can bring as many full-size or travel-sized liquid toiletries that will fit in your bag. This includes aerosol cans.

Carry-on Bag

For the carry-on-only crowd, you must adhere to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule ( 3.4 oz bottle or less; one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; one bag per passenger). Translation: Stock up on those mini bottles, which can include aerosol cans, or decant your items in reusable bottles. Either way, keep them accessible in a plastic bag so you can show the security agent.

What’s the Best Toiletry Bag for Travel?

In the epic battle against disorganization, the right bag is the ultimate weapon. There are two types of bags that belong in every frequent-flier’s arsenal.

For Liquids: A Clear Bag

TSA Approved Clear Travel Toiletry Bag.

Keep your liquids organized in a clear, quart-sized (or smaller) bag and you’ll cruise through security. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Heck, you can even go with a basic kitchen Ziploc bag . If you go this route, be prepared to replace it every trip. These aren’t exactly made to last. The better option? Invest in a more durable, reusable clear bag from Amazon .

For Everything Else: A Multi-Compartment Bag

Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag.

Transport your non-liquids in a colorful, cute multi-compartment bag. Once you’ve landed, you can keep your hotel bathroom pristine by storing products here when not in use. Our top pick is an under-$15 bag by Sleeko , available on Amazon. This bag is water resistant, has unique compartment customization, and it can hang on the back of a bathroom door, freeing up precious counter space. Our other favorite is an under-$20 bag by Mossio , also available on Amazon. It hangs; it has strong compartments; and it comes in a variety of fun prints.

What’s the Best Reusable Travel Container?

Oursunshine Travel Bottles.

Get ready to BYOP: Bring Your Own Product. The alternative to buying travel-size products is bringing your own from home in TSA-approved containers. It’s cost-effective and eco-friendly since you can re-use these containers over and over again. WTP editors love the silicone squeeze containers by Oursunshine . What really sets these guys apart is their size variation. The largest bottles are great for shampoo and conditioner, while the small pots are great for more sparsely used products like eye cream. The bottles have a wide opening which makes it really easy to transfer product from bottle to bottle. Pro tip: If you’re working with especially difficult containers, you could invest in a small bottle funnel. Mini spatulas (made famous on “Shark Tank”) also come in handy if you’re trying to use up that last bit of product.

What About Toiletries Sold in a Bundle?

Convenience Kits International, Women's Deluxe 10 PC Travel Kit.

If using a funnel to transport your shampoo from one bottle to another sounds like a waking nightmare, read on. You can outsource all the toiletry shopping and packing by buying a bundle, a set of minis pre-packaged by a retailer. Think of it as a one-click solution. WTP editors are fans of Walmart’s bundle. For the price of a latte, you get a 10-piece kit . Though this bundle doesn’t tick off every item from our checklist, it does include the most critical items. There’s a men’s and a women’s version of this kit.

Is Dry Shampoo Really Worth It?

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo.

Greasy hair strikes more often when you’re in transit. Keep it fresh by splurging on a luxe toiletry that’s worth the hype: dry shampoo . After a long flight or day of sightseeing, a quick spritz can keep your hair looking clean, dry, and voluminous. If you’re new to the dry-shampoo camp, here’s a little primer. Dry shampoo comes in a little hairspray-like can. Hold the can 12 inches from your head and spray onto your roots. After a few minutes, the spray will dry into a white powder, which looks a little wacky. Just tap the powder into your roots until it’s no longer visible, or brush it through with a hairbrush. You’ll notice immediate results as the powder soaks up grease and adds volume. Our pick is by Living Proof . This brand doesn’t have an offensive scent, it’s easy to use, and it comes in a TSA-friendly 1.8 oz can.

Should You Pre-Buy Sunscreen?

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Water Resistant.

If you’re heading to a tropical destination where there’s Coppertone and Banana Boat in every beachside kiosk, you could be thinking you’ll be A-OK picking up a bottle after you land. That would be a mistake. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends topping up your SPF everyday, not just when you’re beachside. And the sun’s rays are mega-strong when you’re flying, since you’re above the clouds. Do yourself a favor and keep your protection handy.  Our picks? Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen , a non-gloopy that stays put, and the zinc-based EltaMD UV Clear , a one-time Allure Best of Beauty winner and dermatologist fave.

Should I Pack Over the Counter Medication?

Advil Coated Tablets.

Once you start doling out ibuprofen from plastic baggies, you’ll be dubbed “the mom” of your group. But stashing a few over-the-counter meds in your bag is absolutely worth it. When you’re in  a new place, you don’t know how your body is going to react. If you do go down for the count with a headache or an allergy attack, you’ll be grateful to have painkillers or allergy relief handy (as will other folks). Nothing is worse than arriving in Paris with a drumming headache trying to remember the French word for “pharmacy.” (Talk about a romance killer.)  And Ibuprofen is great for hangovers, just saying.

What’s the Most Forgotten Toiletry Item?

Crest 3D White Vivid Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste.

Drumroll please…it’s toothpaste. According to a recent Reddit thread and annual Amazon order information, this is the one toiletry item that travelers forget the most. We can see why: People have full-sized toothpaste for their everyday use, so they check it off the packing list automatically. But full-size tubes don’t meet TSA regulations for carry-ons. And don’t bother transferring toothpaste into another container unless you want to clean winterfresh blobs off your sink. Just add a mini one to your cart. It’s a worthwhile buy that’ll last multiple trips.

The Rundown: Our Top 10 Toiletry Packing Tips

Mari Kondo Minimalist Packing - Paring Down the Possibilites - Toiletries

  • Buy toiletries ahead of time. Not all products are easy or cheap to find once you’ve landed in your destination.
  • Look into a beauty/personal care subscription box for your everyday life. Companies like Ipsy and Birchbox send your curated samples each month. All those minis are great for travel.
  • Consider multipurpose products. For example: Many shampoo bars can be used as body wash and shampoo.
  • Take your toiletries for a test drive. Use your travel minis to get ready for the day before you leave. If you’re missing anything, you’ll have time to add it. Repeat with your nighttime routine.
  • Once they’re all gathered, divvy up your toiletries into two piles, required and nice-to-have. Pack the required pile first.
  • Tighten caps and lids on every item before packing. Store any items you think could leak in a standalone compartment or plastic bag.
  • If you’re ever unclear if an item is allowed on a plane or not, check the TSA’s site . Still don’t see the answer? Tweet at the TSA. They actively respond to inquiries there.
  • Compartmentalize your toiletries to stay organized. Consider taking multiple bags: one makeup bag, one toiletry bag, one clear quart-sized zip-lock bag for liquids from each.
  • If you’re checking a bag, keep a subset of your makeup and toiletries in your carry-on so that you’re not empty handed in the event that your luggage gets lost.

Russia Packing List

Whether you're heading to Russia for vacation or business, there are a few absolute essentials that you can't forget to pack. Beyond the appropriate wardrobe, you should bring a power converter; your passport and visa; and much more. Make your list and plan ahead of time so you don't leave anything important behind.

You can't travel to Russia if you don't have a Russian visa. In order to get one, you should apply well in advance of your trip through an embassy. You will also need an invitation (issued by the hotel at which you plan to stay or through a travel agent), and you can use this invitation to apply for your visa. Double check that the visa is valid during the dates of your trip, and carry your visa with you wherever you go in Russia as sometimes police do random checks.

Bring some cash with you, as you will likely need it. Euros and USD can be exchanged almost anywhere in Russia. There will be ATMs in the airport (or wherever you are arriving), but it’s possible in Russia that they’ll be out of order—so don’t take that risk. It’s quite difficult to pay by credit card in Russia (and practically impossible to pay by debit card), so having cash is essential. Make sure the bills are in crisp, good condition, as it’s quite common in Russia for people (and even banks) to reject damaged bills.

If you’re traveling to Moscow or St. Petersburg and are planning on seeing the tourist attractions , make sure you have a good way of securing your money. Either wear a money belt or get a small bag that sits close to your body with a secure closure—and keep an eye on it!

If you are going to be staying with a host family, or interacting extensively with Russian people in general, it’s nice to bring some small souvenirs from your country (mugs, t-shirts, keychains, and so on). This is a small gesture that will be greatly appreciated.

Toilet Paper

Russian toilets are notoriously dirty and unkempt, and you will often not find toilet paper inside. Carry some with you (or a small pack of tissues) just in case. You may also want to pack a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer as well.

In general, it’s good to bring layers. A scarf will be particularly useful for covering your head if you’re a woman planning to visit religious monuments. This is usually not obligatory, but it is appreciated.

Russian weather is quite unpredictable, and even if you’re traveling at the height of summer, it would be wise to bring an umbrella. This is especially true in St. Petersburg or northern Russia , where it's more likely to rain.

When you're packing your toiletry bag, make sure to include prescription drugs and contact lens solution. Although you can buy most household items in pharmacies and shops in Russia, these particular things are surprisingly difficult to find.

Fancy Outfits

If you plan on going clubbing, you'll need to bring nice clothes. Many clubs, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg , have a strict dress code and will not let you in if you’re not up to their standards. So don’t show up wearing jeans and a T-shirt, which may be fine if you're  going to a casual, local bar  but not to an exclusive club.

Duffel Bags

Packing light is recommended no matter where you're traveling to. But in Russia, try to leave your oversized luggage and rolling suitcases at home. Instead, use a duffel bag that you can easily throw over your shoulder. Many Russian metro stations don’t have escalators but they do have huge staircases that must be climbed to get around the station, which is difficult to navigate with a bulky suitcase.
