How to get your Chromecast connected to a hotel room TV

While some hotels offer complimentary HBO and other viewing packages, others only allow for limited options. But it doesn't have to be this way. If you're a Chromecast user, and remember to pack your device, you can get back to watching Netflix or Hulu easily. All you need to do is connect your Chromecast to a hotel TV. Here's how you can start streaming while away from home.

Connect the Chromecast to the TV

If there is no open hdmi port, connect to the internet, common issues when connecting chromecast to hotel tvs, one last thing, what you need.

This first step is critical. The TV in your hotel room has to have an open HDMI port that you can access (many of them don't). Otherwise, it's game over. Step 3: Plug the power cable into your Chromecast and the other end into the wall plug. (It's possible the TV's USB port may work to power the Chromecast. It may not if it doesn't provide the Chromecast enough juice, so it is best to use a wall plug if possible.)

Pro tip: Bring an extra-long USB power cable in case there isn't a free wall outlet near the TV.

Step 4: Change the input on the TV to match the one you plugged the Chromecast into. (You remembered to remember, right? HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.)

If you're successful, you should see the default Chromecast setup screen. If you can't find an open HDMI port, try the next step.

If there isn't a free HDMI port or you have trouble switching inputs (maybe because the TV simply won't allow it), it's time to try plan B. If you found a cable already plugged into an HDMI port in step 1, unplug it, and swap in your Chromecast. Of course, this means you'll lose your hotel TV channels, but you can always swap it back once you've finished bingeing the latest hot shows on Netflix .

Keep in mind that many hotel chains will purchase HDTVs that are connected to the hotel's own media servers. In many cases, this means that the HDMI ports on the TV may be locked.

So even if there are one or two ports available to connect your Chromecast to, the inputs themselves may not work. If you run into this issue, there's a quick workaround you can try.

Look at the back of the TV. If you see a cable that looks like an Ethernet wire connected to the TV, go ahead and disconnect it. This is the data stream wire (or RJ11 cable) that the hotel uses to deliver cable streams to each TV. Once this wire is disconnected, you should be able to use the TV's HDMI inputs.

If you've gotten this far, this is (hopefully) the last step.

Step 1: Connect your phone or tablet to the hotel's Wi-Fi. This may be done through an open connection or via a password setup that is provided to you at check-in. Check with the front desk if you need help getting your phone connected to hotel Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Now that you are connected to the Internet, if you haven't done so already, download the free Google Home app from Google Play or the Apple App Store . Then, launch the app and follow the on-screen instructions for setting up your Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network.

If you are still not able to get the Chromecast set up and working, you've got some other things to try.

Step 1: Set up a Wi-Fi hotspot.

If you cannot connect the Chromecast to the hotel Wi-Fi, you can set up your own Wi-Fi hotspot instead.

If you have a Windows laptop, you can share its Wi-Fi connection with both your smartphone and Chromecast.

You can do the same thing on a MacOS laptop, but only if you can connect the laptop to an Ethernet connection in the hotel room, and these are becoming increasingly rare.

The same goes for using your phone as a hotspot. Remember that if you've got limited data, you'll eat through it quickly when streaming video.

Step 2: Bring a travel router.

A travel router offers the most reliable way to create a Wi-Fi access point you can then share with devices in your hotel room, including the Chromecast.

There are plenty of these to be found on Amazon and elsewhere, and they usually cost less than $75. Some require access to an Ethernet jack, however — as we mentioned above, that can be hard to find. A model that can run in Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) mode (or bridge mode) will let you sign in to your hotel's Wi-Fi and then make that connection shareable as a regular Wi-Fi network, with a name and password of your choosing.

If none of these options work for you, or you simply don't want to be bothered messing around with HDMI ports and Wi-Fi hot spots, you may not need to bring your Chromecast at all. More and more hotels are beginning to install Chromecast-compatible systems like RoomCast . If your hotel has this, all you need is your phone, tablet, or laptop, and you're all set.

Travel locations may only offer you basic cable, so bringing your Chromecast and connecting your Chromecast to a hotel TV is a great option. If your hotel's TV allows it, you will be able to stay up to date on all your favorite shows by following the above steps. Just remember to unplug your Chromecast when you leave, and replug anything you may have changed on the TV.

These things are especially problematic for a Chromecast because it can't handle the typical hotel Wi-Fi setup. But don't fret because a simple travel router can make your Chromecast work just the way Google intended no matter what hotel you're at.

Unfortunately, hotels also want to sell expensive Wi-Fi, or they'll use network management tools for security and performance reasons. These measures work in ways that make devices like Chromecast fail to work properly. If you find yourself in that predicament, a travel router is what you want.

The reason this is the perfect tool to get your Chromecast up and running is that while your router is using the hotel's network, it's taking that connection and using it to create a wider network that doesn't have messy access management tools that can cause your Chromecast to trip up. To the hotel, you're still just using one device on that one connection.

Your life will be much easier if you begin this setup process at home before getting to the hotel. We'll look to set up the travel router and get the Chromecast connected to it, that way all you'll need to do when you get to the hotel is plug it up and log in.

Plug your travel router into an open wall outlet.
Wait about 30 seconds for it to boot up.
Find the default Wi-Fi network name and password on the TP-Link travel router and use the credentials to connect via your smartphone, tablet, or PC.

Use the web browser on the device you just connected and navigate to the router's configuration page. For the TP-Link N300, that address is http://tplinkwifi.net .
Log in by typing in "admin" for both the username and password on the TP-Link N300. This may be different on other travel routers.

We'll show you exactly how to do that, but first, if you're a new Chromecast owner, you'll need to go through the initial setup process. Repeat Steps 1-8 in the very first section of this guide, only instead of connecting to your home's Wi-Fi network, you'll connect to the hotel's.
On your smartphone and while connected to the travel hotspot, try and navigate to a reliable webpage such as Google.com . If you're able to get there, no further steps are needed. Otherwise, read on.

You may come across the hotel's login page at this point. This may look and work differently depending on which hotel you're at. Some have specific usernames and passwords for each guest, some only require you to press a login button, and some might even require the help of hotel staff. Do whatever you need to do to login.
Once you're in, all of the devices connected to that travel router will also have access. This includes your smartphones, tablets, laptops, and yes, your Chromecast.
Plug your Chromecast into the hotel's TV and power it using the USB cable, and voila — you have a fully functioning Chromecast in your hotel room.

We fully understand your desire to take the Chromecast on the road. Not only is the Chromecast awesome and a great way to stream media, once you're used to how convinient it is the cruddy content on basic cable (and the expense of paying for movies in hotels) becomes unbearable.

Before we dig into potential solutions, let's outline what you need to make the Chromecast work and where the pitfalls lie. Once you have a solid understanding of what the Chromecast needs to function smoothly you can better evaluate the potential solutions and even come up with some of your own.

Connecting your Chromecast through the hotel is going to be a pain or require special hardware -- keep reading if you want to learn all the rest of the details. But there's a simpler solution, which is to simply create a Wi-Fi hotspot from your laptop and connect the Chromecast through your laptop instead.

Windows 10 has a built-in feature called "Mobile Hotspot" that can do this in just a few clicks. Just follow these steps:

Head to Windows' settings by pressing Windows+I on your keyboard.
Go to Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot.
Click the "Edit" button to change your hotspot's name and password, and flip the switch to "On" when you're ready.

From there, you can connect your Chromecast to the hotspot broadcasted by your laptop.

And if you are at a hotel that charges per-device, this can get all your devices online for the price of one, which is pretty handy.

The basic setup of the Chromecast system is simple. Upon first configuration, the Chromecast itself acts like a micro hotspot for the express purpose of you connecting to the Chromecast to configure it and tell it how to connect to a larger and more functional network. You plug in the credentials for the Wi-Fi network you want it to use, and it connects to that network. From that point forward as long as you are also on that network (and can access the Chromecast across the network) you can control it.

What you'd like to do, transport this setup away from your home to a hotel room, is in fact doable but not by setting up the Chromecast in the traditional fashion. While you might be able to recreate the simple at-home setup if you happen to be staying in a bed and breakfast or a small non-chain hotel with simple Wi-Fi configurations, the simple setup process falls apart in large hotel chains with managed infrastructures.

There are two fundamental problems inherent in setting up a Chromecast on a hotel Wi-Fi network. First, the network may have AP/client isolation turned out wherein any client on the Wi-Fi network is isolated from any other client. This is a good security measure that prevents other hotel guests from gaining access to your devices (if you, for example, mistakenly turned on network sharing for the Wi-Fi network and left your shared folders wide open). Unfortunately AP isolation completely breaks the Chromecast as it needs to talk to other devices on the network (specifically to the smartphone, tablet, or computer you're controlling it with). There's no way to work around that limitation without bringing in additional hardware.

The second problem is the issue of authentication splash screens wherein you can log into the Wi-Fi freely but you need to first stop off at a splash page and accept terms of service, plug in your room number, or otherwise authenticate yourself as a valid user of the Wi-Fi system. This bit is a pain but you can, in fact, work around it with a little creativity.

Let's take a look at several ways you can get the Chromecast online in your hotel room and you can select the fit that's best for your budget and patience.

Most modern hotel rooms have Ethernet jacks. In an age when everyone is connecting wireless and the bulk of a hotel's security efforts are focused on the wireless network, Ethernet jacks represent a sort of portal to Narnia where the data flows free and fast. In our experience the Ethernet jacks in hotel rooms are very rarely secured in any fashion and you can simply plug in a device and go.

How does this benefit you in your quest to get the very Wi-Fi only Chromecast online? It benefits you because you can bridge the Wi-Fi gap on your own terms by using a travel router. All you need is a compact travel router like the HooToo Tripmate (a great little router we reviewed earlier this year and gave solid marks ), an Ethernet cable, and you're ready to rock. Just plug in the portable router to the Ethernet jack in your room (you may have to steal the port from the cable box or other networked device in the media center, but we won't tell), fire up the router, and connect to the router with your smartphone, tablet, or computer to configure the Chromecast just like you would at home.

In fact you can even do a dry run at home where you get all the configuration done ahead of time (this way when you plug the router and Chromecast in at the hotel they'll automatically start talking to each other).

Although its rare, if the hotel does have a login/authentication splash page for Ethernet users you can simply visit it with one of your devices (while connected to the wi-fi router). The router has a single IP/MAC address and doles out access (just like your home router) to all the attached devices. Once you accept the terms of agreement with one device through the unified access point the security system will let anything connected to the portable Wi-Fi router, including the Chromecast, pass through just fine.

This is the technique we recommend as it works in practically any room with an Ethernet jack and, if you do the initial setup at home, is essentially just plug and play. You can go from no Chromecast to Chromecast access is less than a minute. This is also the only technique that allows you to use the hotel's data network in the face of (all-too-common) AP isolation.

If you like this method but you're not too keen on shelling out cash for a portable router, you might consider the free (but slightly more complicated) methods that involve turning your hard-wired laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Check out tutorials on the subject here and here .

Let's say you're in a hotel that doesn't have AP isolation turned on. That's great because it means your Chromecast and controlling device (like your laptop or phone) can talk to each other. You still have a big problem, however, if the hotel has a authentication splash screen: there's no way for the Chromecast to navigate the authentication process.

Here's where you have to get creative. The authentication process is almost always linked to the MAC address of the device attaching itself to the network. During the Chromecast setup process the MAC address of the Chromecast is displayed in the lower corner of the Wi-Fi configuration screen. In order to trick the network into letting your Chromecast join, you can spoof the MAC address of the Chromecast on your laptop or portable device and complete the authentication process on the Chromecast's behalf. First, check out our guide to spoofing MAC addresses here or look up a guide for your specific portable device. Second, follow these steps.

Plug in the Chromecast and complete the setup steps far enough along to see the MAC address (or if you have super sharp eyes, read it off the back of the dongle).
Turn the Chromecast off.
Use the appropriate tool or settings menu on your device to change the MAC address of your device to the MAC address of the Chromecast.
Open a web browser and complete the authentication process.
Change your device's MAC address back to it's original address. (Rebooting may be required.)
Authenticate the device with its original MAC address.
Plug the Chromecast back in.

At this point both your devices (the Chromecast and controlling device) will be on the network. Some networks have expiring authentication (24 hours typically) so you'll need to repeat this process each day. It's inconvenient and it only works if the Wi-Fi network has AP isolation turned off.

If the hotel network is more hassle than you care to deal with, you can skip it altogether by using a hotspot service. Many cellular providers offers phone-as-hotspot or even dedicated hotspots (like the MiFi) that allow you to connect your wireless devices to the hotspot which in turn pulls data off the cellular network.

This technique certainly works but its our least favorite of all the options for several reasons. First, if you're doing internet-based streaming (instead of streaming local content from your laptop or phone) you're going to chew up bandwidth really fast. Unless you're one of those rare grandfathered-in "unlimited" AT&T subscribers that means you're going to likely burn through your entire month's data allotment with a single night of Netflix. Second, it puts you at the mercy of cellular network quality which (compared to even lackluster local network access) is rubbish.

The above tips and tricks should get you up and running in no time. Before we leave the subject, however, we have one useful bit of distinctly non-technical advice: bring a screw driver. Many hotel chains have security plates screwed down onto the port/cord areas of their HDTV sets, ostensibly to keep patrons from messing with the cables and necessitating service calls. In such cases you'll need to do a little unlocking before you can pop your Chromecast into the HDMI port. Good luck!

What Are Travel Routers? Everything You Need to Know

If you travel often, or if you're soon traveling as a group, then a travel router might be just the thing to make your trip easier and more pleasant.

Most of us don't travel these days without a full arsenal of gadgets. A phone, a tablet, a laptop, a Kindle, a Chromecast, the list goes on. If that's you, you'll also know that setting them all up on hotel Wi-Fi is a bit of a pain.

The solution is to throw another piece of kit into your bag: a travel router. But what exactly is this, and why do you need one? Let's take a look.

What Is a Travel Router?

Put simply, a travel router is a Wi-Fi router just like the one you've got set up at home, and it works the same way. It's just smaller and more portable, making it more suited for travel.

A travel router is designed to simplify the process of connecting and managing devices on public Wi-Fi networks, whether that means in a hotel, at the airport, or anywhere else.

Most major router manufacturers have travel versions in their product range, including Netgear, D-Link, and more. They can be pretty small, too. The TP-Link Nano routers are almost as small as a credit card, while many other models are comparable in size to a portable phone charger.

Benefits of Travel Routers

The most obvious benefit of a travel router is that it means you don't have to keep adding your devices to the new Wi-Fi networks that you want to use. You keep your devices connected to the travel router instead, and then you only have to connect the travel router to different networks.

This also has the effect of hiding all the devices you've connected to the network—technically, you've only connected one: the travel router. It brings potential security benefits, and it helps you to bypass any arbitrary limits the network owner might have placed on the number of devices you're allowed to connect.

But there are even more benefits.

If the router has an Ethernet port, it can turn a wired internet connection into a wireless one. Travel routers can create a shared network between your connected devices, and many have a USB port that you can use with a flash drive full of media content.

They can also work as wireless extenders that can remove any Wi-Fi dead spots wherever you are. You're unlikely to use this function on the road, but it's a good way to improve Wi-Fi coverage at home .

Drawbacks of Travel Routers

There aren't many downsides, but there are a few things to bear in mind.

First, many travel routers need an external power source, which will limit where you can use them. Second, most need an existing Wi-Fi internet connection to get you online, although some models are available with a built-in SIM card slot for mobile internet connections.

Most importantly, even though they offer some improved security to your devices, they won't protect any data you share over open public Wi-Fi networks. It's important to take the same precautions you would take if you'd connected your laptop to a public network directly.

What to Look for in a Travel Router

When you're shopping for a travel router, you should look out for the same kinds of features you'd look for in a standard wireless router. On top of that, you might also find a few extra features that will help when you're on the road.

Wi-Fi Standard and Band

As with any router, check what Wi-Fi standard it works on. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest and fastest standard, but if not, then 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) is absolutely fine, and 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4) is okay at a push. You should avoid anything older—they will be much slower, more prone to interference, and their age may also suggest they have less modern and less robust security protocols.

Whichever you choose, one that supports the 5 GHz band is preferable. 5 GHz has a smaller range than 2.4 GHz, but it's less susceptible to noise, so it gives you stronger and more reliable signals.

All Wi-Fi 6 routers support 5 GHz, as do those with 802.11ac. Some 802.11n routers are restricted to a single band and only offer 2.4 GHz.

Battery Power

If you want a truly portable solution, then get a travel router that runs off battery power. Unfortunately, many of them don't. If you can't find a suitable model that does, look out for one that can be powered via a USB port. That way, you can plug it into your laptop to use when you're on the road. It's far more convenient than having to search for a power outlet.

Ethernet and USB ports are essentials in a travel router. With Ethernet, you can turn a wired connection that can only be used with a single device (that has an Ethernet port of its own, like a laptop) into a wireless connection that you can use with multiple devices, including phones and tablets.

A USB port has several uses. The main use is for power: some travel routers can be used to charge other devices. Some routers enable you to insert flash drives or portable hard drives and share the media contents stored in them, just like a NAS system does.

Or you can insert a 4G dongle and share your 4G data plan across all your devices.

Some travel routers have a SIM card that you use for this as well. It's less essential, though, because you can use tethering on your smartphone to do the same job. Just make sure your data plan allows for it.

Multiple Usage Modes

Travel routers have many usage modes that enable them to work in different ways. Not every model will have all of these modes, and they might not always have the same names, so just be aware of that. The five most common modes are:

AP mode: Creates a wireless access point from a non-wireless internet connection via an Ethernet cable. For use in locations where there's only access to a wired connection.

If you don't have an Internet connection, you can set up a local Wi-Fi network that will still let you use Chromecast without web access.

Use Google Chromecast Without Internet for Android

Make sure you update the Chromecast to the latest version of its firmware. While the Chromecast can work without an internet connection, its firmware has to be up to date.

On your primary device, open a Google Cast-ready app and click the "Cast" button.

The primary device will begin to search for nearby compatible devices. Find the screen you want to cast to and select it.

A four-digit pin will display on the screen. Enter this pin into your Chromecast app to connect the devices.

Your Android device should now be connected and you can cast media you have stored locally to the screen that's connected to the Chromecast.

If the above method doesn't work or you have an iPhone, there are other options. Travel routers can create a local network, and Mac users can employ third-party applications like Connectify.

Using Google Chomecast With a Travel Router

A travel router can create a local Wi-Fi network which you can use to connect your Chromecast to another device.

Set up your travel router before you leave home and assign it a network name (also known as an SSID) and a password.

Wirelessly connect your Chromecast to the travel router through the app on either your Android or iOS device.

When you plug in the travel router at a new location, it will establish a network. Even if there is no Internet available, you will be able to connect your device to the Chromecast over this network.

Connect the router to the device you want to cast to. If staying in a hotel, you may need to use the television's settings menu to select the router and enter the password.

If the router does not appear, manually enter the SSID and password. You can do this through the network settings of the device you're using by typing in the name and password.

Once connected, the television should appear as a destination for you to cast. Select it as the streaming destination via the Chromecast app. You can find this app on the iOS and the Google Play store.

You should now be able to stream locally stored content to the television even without an Internet connection.

Due to Google's ownership of Android, most Android devices have greater compatibility with Chromecast than iOS devices. If you are a Mac or iOS user, you can use a Connectify Hotspot to achieve the same results. This allows you to create a private network from your laptop.

How to Use Google Chromecast from Mac

Chromecast requires a Wi-Fi connection to work. This option shows how to create a local network from your Macbook that takes the place of Wi-Fi.

Download the Connectify software. Note: this is a paid application, but the free version does allow you to create a wireless network.

Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the software.

Open the Connectify software and set up a hotspot name and password.

Make sure the "Wi-Fi Hotspot" option is selected at the top of the screen.

Connect the device you want to cast to the network.

If the network does not appear, manually enter the hotspot name and password.

Once connected, the device should appear as a destination for you to cast. Select it as the streaming destination via the Chromecast app.

To connect Chromecast to a new Wi-Fi network , connect your mobile device to the network, open the Google Home app, and tap your Chromecast > Settings > Wi-Fi > Forget > Forget network . Then, follow the on-screen prompts to connect your Chromecast to Wi-Fi.

Your Chromecast requires Wi-Fi to communicate with other devices on your network and to stream content from services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus. However, internet access isn't needed for casting over a local network.

This TP-Link wireless router is not only fast but it’s also very versatile in terms of Wifi connectivity. It does everything you’d expect like creating a secure Wifi network from a direct ethernet connection, Wifi connection, modem connection, and a WISP hotspot.

The special bit is that it also works as a range extender and you can connect a device to the router using a wired connection. So if your TV, for example, needs a hardline ethernet cable to connect to the internet, you can run one from the Ac750 directly to it.

As well as being great at Wifi, you can also use it as a power bank and for file sharing. It’s pretty light and compact too making it a great all-rounder. The only downside is that the port layouts are quite annoying and the instructions aren’t clear and could get frustrating.

If you're having an issue with your router, look for your router's make and model on the list below. The recommended workaround steps may resolve the issue for certain routers.

Routers not listed below may still be compatible with your Chromecast (1st gen, 2nd gen), Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio and Google Cast devices without any modifications to your settings.

To set up your Chromecast, make sure that you have access to a 2.4 GHz (for Chromecast (1st gen) devices) or 5 GHz network.
Note: Support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended, which means it no longer receives software or security updates, and Google doesn't provide technical support. Users might notice a degradation in performance.

If you don’t have a smart TV, Google Chromecast offers an alternative way for you to access online content on a TV.

The handy little device hooks up to your TV via HDMI and uses WiFi to cast content from your phone to a TV or monitor. But that’s not all, there are many other cool things you can do with a Chromecast including playing games and making presentations.

However, if your WiFi is weak, spotty, or you’re nowhere close to a source of wireless internet , you won’t be able to use your Chromecast device to cast your content. Fortunately, there are some alternative ways you can use Chromecast without WiFi.

You can use Chromecast to cast your favorite content from your phone to your TV without a normal WiFi setup by using:

Guest Mode in Google Home app
An Ethernet connection
A portable/travel router
Your smartphone’s hotspot

How to Use Chromecast Without WiFi Via Guest Mode

Guest Mode is a feature in Chromecast that was originally intended for guests in your home to connect to your Chromecast device and cast content, without connecting to your WiFi. The feature offers an easy way for you to connect to your Chromecast device without a WiFi connection.

Newer Chromecast models can transmit a WiFi and Bluetooth signal that broadcasts a PIN via short inaudible audio tones. This way, anyone who tries to cast to the device but isn’t registered on your WiFi network can use the PIN to connect and stream content from their device to Chromecast.

To use Guest Mode on Chromecast, the first step is to enable Guest Mode on your device. To do this, open Google Home app and tap the name of your Chromecast device.

Next, tap Settings (gear icon) at the upper right corner of your screen.

In the Device Settings screen, scroll down and find Guest Mode . If you don’t see Guest Mode, then your Chromecast device doesn’t have the feature.

If Guest Mode is listed in your Chromecast’s Device Settings, check whether there’s a PIN displayed underneath it. This indicates that the setting is already enabled, and you can proceed to cast content normally. If you don’t see a PIN underneath the Guest Mode setting, it means you can cast in Guest Mode but the setting has been disabled. In this case, tap Guest Mode and then toggle the switch to On .

Wait for it to generate a PIN and then go to the app you want to stream content from and cast it.

Use Chromecast Without WiFi from a Google Cast-ready App

If you don’t have Guest Mode, you can always cast from a Google Cast-ready app and enjoy your favorite content without worrying about WiFi.

To do this, update your Chromecast’s firmware to the latest version, otherwise it won’t work without WiFi.
Next, open a Google Cast-ready app on your device, and then tap the Cast button.

You’ll see a 4- digit PIN on your TV, which you’ll enter into the Chromecast app to connect your phone and TV or whichever devices you’re using to cast content. For example, if you use YouTube, tap on the Cast button and then tap Link with TV Code .

Using an Ethernet Connection

Another way to use Chromecast without WiFi is by connecting an Ethernet cable.

This method is helpful where your only options are local WiFi hotspots or hotel internet if you’re traveling. In such cases, two-factor authentication , which uses browser functionality plus acceptance of certain terms and conditions, is required before you can access the WiFi.

Chromecast doesn’t have browser functionality so you won’t be able to stream content. With an Ethernet connection, however, you can connect to the internet and cast from your device to Chromecast.

For this method to work, you’ll need an Ethernet cable with a USB connection on the other end. If you’re using Chromecast Ultra, plug in the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet power adapter, and then connect the USB cable to the Chromecast. Once done, plug into the active Ethernet jack and cast content as you normally would.

Note : If you have the new Android-TV powered Chromecast, it lacks Ethernet support but you can buy a special power and Ethernet adapter for that purpose. The Ethernet power adapter isn’t included with older Chromecast models, but you can buy a third-party adapter like the Cable Matters micro USB to Ethernet adapter or UGREEN Ethernet adapter .

How to Use Chromecast with a Travel/Portable Router

A portable or travel router is a great alternative if you don’t have WiFi and want to cast content to your Chromecast device. Plus, it’s safer to use your own router compared to a local WiFi hotspot or hotel WiFi as you have more privacy, control over who can access your network , and you there are no public WiFi agreements to accept.

To use this method, you need to set up the router first, assign it an SSID (network name) and password, and then connect your Chromecast to the router via the Chromecast app on your device.

If you’re staying in a hotel, connect the router to the Ethernet connection and connect the other end to a power outlet so it doesn’t go off while you’re enjoying your favorite content. You may need to use the hotel TV’s settings menu to choose your router and enter the password.

Note : If you don’t see the router, enter the SSID and password manually through the device’s network settings. Once connected, the TV will be listed as a streaming destination via Chromecast app, and you can stream content from your device.

Use Your Smartphone’s Hotspot

If you can’t use any of the methods we’ve covered so far, you can still use your smartphone’s hotspot to cast content on Chromecast without WiFi.

A third-party service is a good alternative to use a Chromecast without WiFi especially if you have an iPhone, Mac, or the other methods aren’t working for you.

One of the best apps for this purpose is Connectify Hotspot , which allows you to share your computer’s WiFi or wired internet connection as a WLAN (wireless local area network) hotspot location.
