HELP WANTED: Group Hotel Contracts Manager

If you’ve ever signed a hotel contract, handled a group rooming list, or sourced hotels for group rates,  we want to talk to you .

TravelAdvocates is a B2B group travel services company that books hotels for thousands of groups each year. TravelAdvocates is seeking a Group Hotel Contracts Manager to assist with a growing number of key leisure accounts, with tasks including: hotel contract review and processing, and handling and submitting of group rooming lists to hotels by pre-set deadlines. This job is full time and entirely remote / home-based.

You will be directly assisting Floyd Morris, VP of Contracting, in a team effort to process hotel contracts for various groups. Your daily tasks will include reading hotel contracts, negotiating specific contract clauses with the hotels, entering the data in our database, and administering group rooming lists. You will be using Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and our customized software in Quickbase.

The ideal candidate will have prior hotel experience specifically as a hotel operations or sales manager/coordinator who has handled a group rooming list or hotel contract. If you don't have hotel experience, you should have group tour operations or meeting/conference experience where you negotiated hotel room rates for room blocks or coordinated groups with hotels in some fashion. A great candidate might have neither of these skill sets but come from the legal contracting world (2 of us are former attorneys!). We only book groups (no FITs) so coming to us with some sort of group hotel knowledge would be helpful.

This person must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and have a strong sense of urgency as we are deadline-driven. This person must not require a lot of oversight as we do not micromanage teammates. Instead, we hire strong proven leaders who we fully train and then allow them to self-manage as long as projects get completed correctly and on time. Accuracy and speed are very important. This person must be a multi-tasker and able to handle multiple projects at any given time. To be successful, this person must be extremely fast on the PC, a fast typist, and quick on Word, Excel, and Outlook. Bonus points go to the candidate who has prior competitive athletic team experience - someone who is used to attending athletic practices and competitions, being given tasks, adjusting to various roles and deadlines, and excelling under pressure.

You will be joining a team of 10 group hotel experts, half of whom have been with the company for over 10 years. Compensation includes health benefits, 401k with company match, paid time off, and travel related benefits. This is a full time salaried position. Your base salary will be based on your experience and potential to succeed.

Please email your resume and annual salary requirements to [email protected] . This is a full time position. This is a remote position; you must have a dedicated area in which to work Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm. All submissions will be kept highly confidential. Position starts immediately.

My recruiter’s experience and her expertise in the nursing field speak volumes when knowing exactly how and what is needed to have a successful contract. When unexpected events occurred; the quick responses, check-ins, and updates were always professional with helpful information. Travel works for charlotte: the latest roadshow stop on our national advocacy tour.

May 31, 2024 By U.S. Travel Association

This week, U.S. Travel Association's Travel Works Roadshow made a stop in the vibrant city of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Our day was packed with insightful conversations and tours of iconic local hotspots—all showcasing how travel creates jobs, enriches communities and powers the economy in Charlotte and across the state.

Senator Ted Budd, a fierce travel champion, joined us to share the impact of travel in North Carolina. The industry added $35.6 billion to the state's economy in 2023, and North Carolina ranks as the 5th most visited state in the U.S.

Senator Budd at TW CLT

Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem, Danté Anderson, explained the essential role travel plays in her community, driving business revenue and supporting 138,000 jobs.

Charlotte Mayor Dante Anderson

Leaders from NASCAR, Johnson and Wales University and Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority provided insights into how the city continues to innovate its attractions and experiences, like the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the newly reopened Sullenberger Aviation Museum .

A fireside chat with American Airlines' Steve Neuman offered an inside perspective on the airline's cutting-edge initiatives, which we saw firsthand during a tour of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Neuman discussed harnessing machine learning technologies like Smart Gating to streamline the travel experience and the strategic value of having American’s second-largest hub at CLT—one of the world's most connected airports.

U.S. Travel thanks Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, Visit North Carolina, American Airlines and all who made this Travel Works a success—demonstrating the industry’s vital role in Charlotte and nationwide.

9 Jobs That Can Be Done While Traveling

In a world of high-speed living and remote jobs, earning money anywhere is possible. Travel isn’t cheap. It costs a lot of money, and working in an office does not leave much time for leisure. If you are on vacation and have seen all there is to be seen, you may look for something else to pass the time.

Remote jobs don’t have to be boring. In fact, many of them are great options for earning free or discounted travel. You just have to know how to choose which of these travel jobs is right for you.

1. Blogging

Blogging while traveling is a great way to earn some money. Your office is wherever your laptop is, so you are never tied down to one place. This can help you travel the world with just a laptop and a bit of data, which you can always find in local cafes or restaurants . It’s even better if you do travel writing, so you can combine firsthand experience with creative writing that helps others plan their travels.

<p><span>The rise of Mukbang videos, where people eat insane amounts of food while sometimes conversing with the camera, is weirdly intriguing to many and simultaneously perplexing. While it attracts massive audiences, the fascination with watching someone devour excessive quantities of food remains a mystery. Moreover, this trend raises concerns about promoting unhealthy eating habits and overindulgence.</span></p>

2. Vlogging

Similar to blogging, video blogging, also called “ vlogging ,” is a visual form of content. You can write blogs for your website but also work as a freelancer for other people’s websites. When it comes to vlogging, however, people usually vlog for their own channels. It takes more time to succeed but can also be more rewarding monetarily. All you need is a smartphone with a nice camera, or if you want to be fancy, a laptop with some video editing software like Adobe PremierePro or DaVinci Resolve.

<p>Interestingly, it seems like millennials have a better understanding of technology. Gen Z grew up with tech, but millennials have more experience with the inner workings, like troubleshooting a computer or building an HTML code. I would think the opposite would be true, but tech has become too easy for Gen Z in some ways.</p>

3. Video Commercials

This one is both fun and rewarding. If you have a smartphone with a decent camera and invest in an excellent DJI drone, you can earn some nice money on your travels. Combine this with an investment in a decent laptop and a video editing course, and you have a recipe for success. When I was on vacation in Corfu , I discovered an opportunity with their beautiful beachfront Tavernas. I packed my drone, visited a few of them on foot, and offered them my services. I scored two jobs for filming a video ad and one logo redesign job, which made me a nice profit for less than a full day of work.

4. Singing and Playing an Instrument

Singing or playing an instrument is another excellent way to earn some surprisingly good money. If you are a good singer and can play an instrument, you can always play in the city center or other popular spots. Many great talents have been discovered performing in public this way. You can also offer your skills to local restaurants or lounges if they are in need of live music or other entertainment.

<p>If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. <em>Pro tip</em>: You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.</p>

5. Haircuts for Tips

If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. Pro tip : You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.

<p><span>In a tabloid or on a gossip website, if a celebrity looks to be posing in a staged photo, they most certainly are. Stars view it as a cooperative effort that benefits all parties, and fans frequently aren’t aware that the “candid” photos were expertly staged before being made public.</span></p>

6. Exposure for Businesses

This travel job is for those with a well-developed online business. If you already have a travel blog , you can always ask restaurant owners, bar owners, hotels, and others who provide services in tourism if they would like to collaborate on a promotion on your website. The business will get exposure to your audience, and you can negotiate payment or exchanges for that promotion, like a one-night hotel stay or a free meal.

<p>This unique locale lets guests taste wine from three family-owned micro-wineries: Blacksmith Cellars, Sunset Cellars, and King Andrew Vineyard. Staff at the tasting room are wine producers and grape growers, providing expert knowledge on the local wines and the Suisun Valley wine region. The tasting list changes weekly. And guess what — you can bring picnics or snacks (but no outside drinks). Stop by La Barista Espresso for deli sandwiches on your way to the <a href="https://suisunvalleywinecoop.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Suisun Valley Wine Co-op</a>.</p><ul> <li><strong>Blacksmith Cellars:</strong> Founded in 2003, winemaker Matt Smith crafts complex wines, distinctive varietal-driven and blended wines.</li> <li><strong>Sunset Cellars:</strong> Starting in 1997 in the garage of the Inner Sunset neighborhood in <a href="https://wealthofgeeks.com/kid-friendly-things-to-do-in-san-francisco/">San Francisco</a>, Sunset Cellars has a minimalist winemaking style and respects the grower’s efforts in the vineyards.</li> <li><strong>King Andrew Vineyard:</strong> After growing grapes in their own vineyard, Roger King and his wife Carol brought their bottled wine from small lot production to the winery. The fresh and vibrant wines are bottled with limited intervention.</li> </ul><p>Reservations are not required, but they are recommended.</p>

7. Bartending

A good barista is always a much-needed part of the crew. If you know how to mix drinks or make a killer espresso, you can always offer your services to nightclubs or cafes and earn a decent wage, plus tips.

8. Temporary Tattoos or Hair Styling

Unlike the classic tattoo industry, where laws and regulations can tie up employment approval, temporary tattoos can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not fall under any laws and regulations. There is a low risk of infection with temporary tattoos or paints, unlike classic tattoos that are created by piercing the skin. Hair braiding or wrapping is popular at beach destinations and can also be done anytime, anywhere.

9. Working on a Cruise Ship

Working on a cruise ship is more permanent, but it still fits within the scope of travel jobs. There are numerous jobs that you can do on a cruise ship, and each of those offers some nice wages. Understandably, a captain makes much more than a cabin steward, but all employees receive benefits and gratuity. You can use the time between shifts to discover beautiful cities wherever you stop.

<p>Discussions about places to visit in Montenegro tend to begin with Kotor, and it is easy to see why. Kotor packs plenty into its relatively small borders, with a proud maritime history allied to modern cafes, restaurants, and bars, plus some of the most alluring churches in this part of the world. Stop for a romantic courtyard lunch at Pržun before taking the arduous walk up to the fortress walls, where the ultimate view of the Bay of Kotor awaits.</p>

Future Jobs and Investment Authorities

The NSW Government is committed to supporting communities reliant on the coal industry to secure their long-term economic future as the global demand for coal declines over time.

Santos industry at Narrabri

New South Wales has a long history of coal mining and coal-fired power generation, with most of this concentrated in the Hunter, Central West, Illawarra and North West regions. These regions contribute billions of dollars to the NSW economy and tens of thousands of jobs. The local economies of these regions are highly dependent on the coal sector.

The NSW Government has committed to establishing Future Jobs and Investment Authorities. The Future Jobs and Investment Authorities will be made up of local representatives in each coal-reliant region to advise the Government on regional priorities and investment opportunities. The Future Jobs and Investment Authorities will help deliver investment in new industries to support the creation of jobs to deliver the best possible economic outcome for these communities. They will coordinate across all levels of Government to ensure investment and action is timed in the right way to support the best outcomes for coal-reliant communities.

Driving investment to create jobs will be the key performance indicator for the Future Jobs and Investment Authorities, which will be measured by:

  • job creation, particularly creation of similar or higher value jobs that provide continued direct and indirect economic benefits
  • productive investment in each region through the growth of engine industries and activation of new industries
  • coordination across all levels of Government and with local communities to maximise opportunities and deliver effective outcomes.

Action to date

To support the establishment of the Future Jobs and Investment Authorities, the NSW Government has:

  • committed $5.2 million to support the establishment of the authorities to these four regions to grow future jobs and industries
  • held four stakeholder roundtables in the Hunter (8 August 2023), Central West (10 November 2023), Illawarra (27 March 2024) and the North West (10 April 2024) regions to gain community and industry insights on regional priorities
  • developed an Issues Paper to go out to public consultation on the proposed model and functions of the new Authorities.

Have your say

The NSW Government has developed an Issues Paper with a proposed approach to the establishment of the Authorities including:

  • a proposed structure with clear roles and responsibilities of the Authorities
  • how the Authorities will work with local, state and Australian government entities, industry and communities
  • the funding model for the Authorities
  • what legislation will need to change
  • how we will measure success.

We want to hear from you. Please click on the link below to Have Your Say.

Consultation opens 28 May 2024 and closes 12 July 2024 .

Royalties for Rejuvenation

The NSW Government sets aside at least $25 million each year from mining royalties to support coal mining communities in New South Wales through the Royalties for Rejuvenation Fund. The funding will ensure that coal mining communities can make targeted investments towards strategic planning, workforce development programs, constructing enabling infrastructure, and establishing new industries and employment opportunities.

As part of the Royalties for Rejuvenation Fund, the NSW Government established Regional Expert Panels to provide regionally specific advice to ensure decision-making is aligned with the needs and demands of the local area.

The Government will consider the Royalties for Rejuvenation Fund and Royalties for Rejuvenation Expert Panels established under the NSW Mining Act 1992 and Mining Regulation 2016 as part of the public consultation on the Future Jobs and Investment Authorities Issues Paper.

Cicada map 2024: Broods XIII and XIX emerge in Ohio vacationer hotspots

It's not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it doesn't happen often. It's typically more than a decade between times when periodical cicadas emerge in full force in many portions of the country.

They're out now in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

Here's where you can find cicadas above ground this year.

What do cicadas eat? Lifecycle, diet and biting habits explained

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Traveling from Ohio or Northern Kentucky this summer? You may see cicadas

Are you an Ohio or Kentucky resident traveling to places like middle Tennessee or western North Carolina? Well then, be on the lookout for cicadas.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, both less than 300 miles from Cincinnati and under 400 miles from Columbus, are Ohio vacationer hotspots where cicadas are above ground this spring.

If you're eyeing a Lake Michigan getaway, you're likely to share the beach with some 17-year cicadas.

New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan, which is less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and slightly more than 300 miles from Akron, has cicadas.

Likewise for Indiana Dunes in Northern Indiana — also less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and a little over 300 miles from Akron. Northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, are also expected to experience 17-year cicadas this year.

Where are the cicadas in 2024? App developed in Cincinnati tracks sightings

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

App users have spotted them in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has emerged in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois and downstate areas around the cities of Peoria and Champaign are experiencing cicada mania, according to the tracking service.

Does Ohio have cicadas?

Ohio is  not  in the path of the two broods appearing across much of the Southeast and Midwest, according to the University of Connecticut. However, you might still spot either brood this spring as "some stragglers may pop up in the southwest of the state," according to Ohio State University's  Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team .

Parts of southern and southwest Ohio will see the emergence of Brood XIV cicadas in 2025, per OSU's Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team.

Confusingly, Brood XIII emerges every 17 years while Brook XIX resurfaces every 13 years, according to the  University of Illinois .

Will cicadas emerging this year fly to Ohio?

Ohio is not expected to see an onslaught of periodical cicadas from either Brood XIX or XIII, but some neighboring states will.

So will the cicadas be able to fly to Ohio? That's unlikely for two reasons.

First, cicadas are clumsy flyers, and their wings are not suitable for long distance travel, according to  Science News Explores .

Plus, periodical cicadas emerge only to molt, breed, lay eggs and die, all within a few weeks. They don't spend time looking for new territory. Cicadas typically fly less than half a mile from the spot where they emerge, according to the University of Illinois. So, 17-year cicadas from Abraham Lincoln's day have spread roughly five miles total.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These distinct species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which has a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which has a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest, partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

'Below Deck Mediterranean' Star Aesha Scott Talks Luxury Yachting and How to Pack Like a Pro

Pro tip: become besties with your cabin mate.

Below Deck star Aesha Scott is ready to be back in the Mediterranean.

But this time, the 32-year-old is coming prepared for the hard work — as well as the drama — with all the right looks thanks to her stealth packing skills. "I've spent the last 10 years living out of a bag, so I'm a master of shifting around my contents," she told Travel + Leisure in an interview ahead of the Below Deck Mediterranean season premiere on Monday. "I try to pack pieces that are quite versatile, always packing for both seasons because, inside the boat, I find it very cold and then outside the boat is very warm. And then you've got your activewear. So I just try and pick three outfits per season; one activewear, three for winter, three for summer."

But befriending your cabin mate for some extra options doesn't hurt either, she added.

"You've just got to make friends with your roommate, and then you can mix and match," she said. "I always raid all the other girls' closets...because there's no way you can fit 10 different outfits in those tiny little closets that we have. You have to just pick pieces that you can wear with multiple different looks."

Fashion aside, Scott tells T+L that returning to the Med for season 9 of Below Deck Mediterranean — after starring on the show's Australian spin-off Below Deck: Down Under — is a homecoming of sorts as she first got in front of Bravo cameras in 2019 in the Med with Capt. Sandy Yawn at the helm.

"This season is really, really special to me because I've gone back to the Med," Scott said. "I loved 'Down Under,' [and] I love [Capt.] Jason [Chambers]. I don't want anyone to question that. But the Med is where it began."

"It's got a very special place in my heart. I spent so many years wandering around the cobbled streets and enjoying the Mediterranean sun," she added, sharing that she got her first yachting gig in France. "And then it's also special to me because I started my Below Deck journey with Sandy. I have so much respect for her, and I wanted to prove myself. I just really wanted to show her that I could do a good job."

And this time, aboard luxury yacht Mustique , she'll be the chief stew.

But it's not just Sandy who adds a little workplace pressure. So too, does the destination itself, because as Scott explains, the Med "definitely high-end" and a place where guests expect truly exceptional service — as proved by this preview clip where the mere thought of waiting on laundry threw guests into a tailspin.

"I think the Mediterranean has this sense of class which raises the standards even more," Scott said.

And really, she thinks that's an important thing to consider — just what level of luxe you want to be at — if you're considering chartering a boat anytime soon.

According to Scott, while the Med can be a bit buttoned up, in Australia, "it's a much more laid-back vibe. The crew will get more involved. It's a bit more casual, [there's] a bit more banter. It's just a little bit less formal."

But for those looking for more of a Goldilocks fit — a destination that's not too luxe but not too laidback —  she thinks the Caribbean is the perfect mix. There, she says, "you've got these really beautiful exclusive places, but it is still island vibes."

But again, at least professionally, the Med keeps calling her name.

"I've tried other places, I've been around, but it keeps calling me back," she says with a laugh. "There's just nothing like it."

Below Deck Mediterranean premieres on June 3 on Bravo at 9 p.m. ET.

Politics | ‘a huge kiss and make up:’ disney world, florida leaders plot major expansion, subscriber only, politics | quest for desantis’ travel records leads to 2-year delay, then denial, “we have a new model that can be summed up in two words: trust me,” first amendment advocate says.

Complaints have been filed with the Federal Elections Commission and the state Commission on Ethics over Gov. Ron DeSantis’ frequent use of state and private aircraft and failure to disclose using it for personal reasons. They are pending. (Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel)

The newspaper wanted to determine if DeSantis, who was running for reelection, had piggybacked campaign events on top of official ones without the campaign reimbursing the state for the Aug. 30, 2022, flight.

It also wanted to know whether other candidates reimbursed FDLE for using the jet bought with taxpayer dollars after DeSantis became governor in 2019. The aircraft is available to the governor and other top state leaders for official duties.

The FDLE denied the requests in late April and early May. It delayed the response until a year after DeSantis signed a law that bans the release of his and the other leaders’ travel records. Lawmakers called it necessary to protect their safety.

“My fear and suspicion is they are using public safety as an excuse to hide expenditures they don’t want you to know about,” said Bobby Block, executive director of the First Amendment Foundation. “We have a new model that can be summed up in two words: Trust me.”

The bill’s sponsors, both of them Republican, repeatedly assured public records advocates and Democratic lawmakers that the financial records related to travel would continue to be available to the public as they always had been. The law was meant to shield only the logistics of the trips, they said.

The bill passed along party lines in both the House and Senate.

Rep. Jeff Holcomb, R-Spring Hill, sponsor of the House version of the bill, also assured fellow lawmakers during a committee hearing in March that the bill wouldn’t affect public records requests related to campaign travel.

“This doesn’t affect any of the financial disclosures in place,” Holcomb said. “This is about the methods and means of security protection.”

But that has not turned out to be the case. Other news outlets besides the Orlando Sentinel have waited several months to find out their requests for travel records were denied.

The reason given for the lengthy delay was that the agency’s public records department is short-staffed and deals with a high volume of requests.

Holcomb did not return an email seeking clarification.

Complaints have been filed with the Federal Elections Commission and the state Commission on Ethics over the governor’s frequent use of state and private aircraft and failure to disclose using it for personal reasons. They are pending.

A lawsuit challenging the law’s constitutionality was recently filed in Leon Circuit Court by American Oversight, a nonprofit government watchdog committee.

“It’s about accountability that impacts all the citizens of the state,” Block said. “Are you spending dollars on things that impact citizens or is it a personal trip intended for your career interests and nothing to do with the public good?

The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Part of the problem is the law includes a long list of things to be exempt from public view but says nothing about the transportation costs or travel related to political campaigns or other personal use, he said. And the language is vague enough to make understanding legislative intent problematic.

“The only way to get to the bottom of this is a court case,” Block said.

It was difficult enough to trace the governor’s travel before he signed the bill into law, which went into effect immediately with hundreds of requests going back months and more than a year still in the pipeline, waiting to be processed. And the law is retroactive.

“The retroactivity makes it such that we’re not going to get anything related to his travel,” Michael Barfield, director of public access for the Florida Center for Government Accountability, said at the time. The FLCGA has filed numerous public records lawsuits against the DeSantis administration.

Other recent trips that have raised concerns about who was paying for them include ones to Japan, Seoul, South Korea and Israel, all paid for with officials said were private donations, Politico reported.

A book tour to launch DeSantis’ memoir and kick off his presidential campaign was handled by a nonprofit that didn’t have to disclose its records.

And a law enforcement report of a fender bender outside of Chattanooga that waylaid the governor’s presidential campaign convoy last July revealed that the FDLE had rented the vehicles used in the motorcade. The cost of those rentals is still unknown.

The Sentinel asked FDLE back in August 2022 how much it had cost to fly the governor to and from Fort Pierce and Live Oak, including flight crew costs, ground transportation, and security team expenses. A September 2022 flight to Fort Myers was also questioned.

Unlike previous campaign reports that show the DeSantis campaign paid back the FDLE $14,459 for transportation, campaign records show no repayment to FDLE for the Aug. 30 trip.

The dates of the three reimbursements lined up with DeSantis news conferences in Vero Beach, Daytona Beach, DeFuniak Springs and Sanford.   But nearly two years later, the FDLE has still not provided details about those reimbursements.

Asked to explain the lengthy delays, FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plesinger said the agency is overwhelmed by thousands of public requests.

FDLE publishes a Protective Operations Report each year that gives the total annual cost of transporting and protecting the governor, but it’s not broken down into individual trips.

The governor’s security detail for 2023, including transportation and agents’ salaries was  $9.4 million, more than double the amount spent the previous year.

“The information is invariably useless to anyone trying to figure out who paid” for the travel, Block said.

Former FDLE Chief of Staff Shane Desguin said in a sworn statement filed by the Washington Post in a lawsuit against the FDLE that top aides to the governor blocked the release of records detailing the governor’s taxpayer-funded travel.

“This extra layer of review often unquestionably delayed FDLE’s ability to timely respond to the public records requests,” said Desguin, who resigned after arguing the records should be made public. “These delays were not in line with the new law to protect the governor’s safety.”

When he began working at the Florida Amendment Foundation two years ago, Block said, he was reluctant to say that the public records system was broken.

But there is no independent body to mediate when a person’s request for records is denied, delayed or not even met with a response, Block said. The only alternative is to take the agency to court, something most Floridians cannot afford, he said.

“If that’s their only option, then the system is broken,” Block said. “There is no better explanation that the system is broken than this travel financial information brouhaha we’re having now.”

The first criminal conviction of a former American president is raising a host of legal and political questions: Will Donald Trump go to prison? Could he pardon himself? What about the election? Trump was found guilty by a Manhattan jury Thursday of 34 felony counts related to a scheme during his 2016 presidential campaign to pay off a porn actor who said the two had sex. It’s not clear whether he will go to prison. That will be up to the judge. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the case, refused to say Thursday whether prosecutors will seek prison time.
