Zhejiang History and Culture

Zhejiang has been important historically with Hangzhou being one of China's ancient capitals, rising in prominence to be the largest city in the world in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The Hangzhou area is noted for having the best tea in China. It's China's top tea city. Zhejiang is also noted for it's Buddhist temples and worship sites.

Prehistoric times: Zhejiang is one of the birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization. A great storehouse of historical relics, Zhejiang has long been called The State of Historical Relics. Archeologists report, 50,000 years ago the hominid named "Jiande" had been living in the western mountainous area of Zhejiang. Large numbers of historical relics have been unearthed in the Hemudu Ruins in Yuyao City. The relics include production tools and food utensils made of animal bones, wood and stones. All of the archeological relics show that the Chinese ancestors of 7,000 years ago had a well-developed pre-historical civilization.

In the feudal period , Zhejiang was a favorite place for the emperors to build their seats of power, and it has witnessed the rise and fall of many dynasties. Throughout history, Zhejiang has been given a lot of names, however the shape of Zhejiang Province was fixed in its present form in the years from 1661 to 1722.

The economy of Zhejiang was developed relatively early. As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) there were advanced hydraulic engineering projects, a salt manufacturing industry and a porcelain making industry. After the Third Century AD, the economy in Zhejiang achieved further development, and business gradually became more prosperous. Up until the dynasties of Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907), the economy in Zhejiang developed at a fast rate, and the productivity of agriculture also improved. The area around Hangzhou City and Jiaxing City became an important production area for crops. The textile industry, porcelain making industry and paper making industry were improved. Mingzhou (now Ningbo City) became an important trade port in Southeastern China. After the Tenth Century, Zhejiang entered a prosperous period of feudal economy, and become one of the richest areas in China.

After the mid-19th century , because of the invasion of Western capitalism, Zhejiang became an important bridge between the economic hub of Shanghai and wealthy southern China. Despite stagnation during the Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms combined with the entrepreneurial spirit of the Zhejiang people enabled this province to once again become one of China's richest provinces, a major center for export and commercialism.

It's Hángzhōu, the handsome capital city, that lands Zhèjiāng (浙江) on many a traveller's itinerary. Home to picture-perfect landscapes of classical Chinese beauty (and just a short train ride from Shànghǎi), Hángzhōu is the obvious highlight. Yet the province offers so much more. There are water towns with spiderweb networks of canals and restored Ming and Qing dynasty merchants' homes (Wūzhèn and Nánxún), also in easy striking distance. Among the thousands of islands dotting a ragged and fragmented shoreline is the island of Pǔtuóshān, one of China's four most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. More intrepid travellers can head west, where ancient villages retain their traditional architecture and bucolic charms. Meanwhile travellers looking for the opposite of intrepid can hole up in one of the stylish resorts nestled among the hillside bamboo groves and tea fields of naturally cool Mògànshān.

Hiker Spots Secret Behind Famous Waterfall in China

T he Yuntai Sky Fall, a breathtaking natural wonder and China’s most popular tourist site has recently been embroiled in controversy. A viral video on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok , revealed that the seemingly natural torrent of water was actually being supplemented by a pipe built into the rock face. The operators of the Yuntai Mountain Geopark, where the famous waterfall is located, admitted to the “small enhancement,” claiming it was done to enrich the visitor experience during the dry season. They issued a statement, personifying the falls, saying, “I have made a small enhancement during the dry season, solely to be able to present myself in a better state when meeting with my friends.”

A Small Enhancement or Grand Deception?

The video sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. While some users were understanding of the park’s efforts to maintain the waterfall’s grandeur, others criticized the practice as deceptive and unfair to tourists.

    Legal Implications and Authenticity Concerns

Under China’s Tourism Law, websites and social media accounts are required to provide accurate information about tourist attractions. Before the video surfaced, the Yuntai Mountain Geopark made no mention of the pipe on its website or social media platforms, raising concerns about transparency and authenticity.

A Trend of Artificial Waterfalls in China

Interestingly, the Yuntai Sky Fall is not the only artificial waterfall in China. The Tiantai Mountain in Zhejiang province features a waterfall that was dry for 60 years but was transformed into a cascading wonder in 2013, operating on a set schedule each day.

The Future of Yuntai Sky Fall

The incident has sparked a wider debate about the ethics of altering natural attractions for tourism purposes. As the Yuntai Sky Fall continues to attract visitors, it remains to be seen whether the park will adjust its practices or embrace its artificial enhancement as part of its unique appeal.

The Yuntai Sky Fall controversy serves as a reminder that the line between natural and artificial can be blurred in the world of tourism. While some visitors may appreciate the efforts to maintain a consistent waterfall experience, others may feel misled by the undisclosed artificial intervention. As travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences, the Yuntai Sky Fall incident prompts a deeper reflection on the balance between preserving natural wonders and catering to tourist expectations.

It is also one of the few remaining bunds with a history of one hundred years in China. Today, Ningbo Old Bund still retains a large number of beautiful old European buildings . The heavy wooden doors creak when pushed open, the rusty iron fence is silent counting the passing of time, and the beautifully carved stone tells the old stories to passing-by visitors.

Along the river, foreign consulates, Catholic churches, banks, and ship docks line up, recording the entire history of Ningbo's opening. These buildings have at least 100 years of history, and nowadays preserved historical and cultural architecture are included: the British consulate, Police Station, the Catholic Church, Jiangbei Holy Church of Jesus, there are some private residences like the merchant house "Yan Family Villa", "Residence of Zhu Family", etc. Buildings at the Old Bund have full-bodied European architecture style, showing architectural styles of English, French, German, Dutch and other cities in Europe.

    • 1st LD-Writethru-China Focus: China upgrades flood control emergency response level after red alert for rainstorms

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China's national observatory on Monday issued this year's first red alert for rainstorms, the highest level in the country's weather warning system, with different provinces implementing various measures to battle the extreme weather.

The National Meteorological Center at 10 a.m. Monday issued a red alert for rainstorms, which was later maintained at 6 p.m., forecasting heavy rains in the provincial-level regions of Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guizhou and Guangxi.

The country's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Monday raised emergency responses to flooding to Level III in the eastern provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi.

China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I being the most urgent response and a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

One more work team will be sent to Zhejiang to assist in local flood prevention efforts, the headquarters said.

Work teams dispatched to Anhui and Jiangxi will continue their work there, according to the headquarters.

Torrential rains have triggered mountain torrents in Yuanling County in central China's Hunan Province, leaving four dead and one missing, according to the county's emergency management department.

The county has activated its emergency response and organized efforts to ensure the necessary supplies and restore power, telecommunications and transportation services.

On Monday, the provincial capital Changsha saw 15 waterlogged roads after intense rain. The city's subway Line 2 and Line 3 have suspended operations.

In response to the weather warning, the Xin'anjiang Reservoir, built on the upper reaches of the Qiantang River in Zhejiang Province, opened five of its nine floodgates at 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to the provincial water resources department.

As the largest reservoir in east China, the Xin'anjiang Reservoir plays a vital role in flood control in the Qiantang River area.

In the neighboring Anhui Province, the provincial authorities activated red alerts for mountain torrents and geological disasters in three county-level areas in the city of Huangshan, expecting a high probability of mountain torrents and geological disasters from 8 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Heavy rain has battered the city of Huangshan since June 18, with the water levels of 99 of its 188 reservoirs recorded above the danger level as of 5 p.m. Sunday. The lives of over 400,000 residents had been affected and 54,109 people had been evacuated as of 3 p.m. Sunday.

By Monday morning, a total of 43 national A-level tourist attractions in Huangshan had been temporarily shut due to the extreme weather. Mount Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its magnificent natural beauty, has been partially closed since June 20, with the reopening date depending on weather conditions. Enditem
