I’d say that, along with El Cuyo , the main spots for kitesurfing in Yucatan are Progreso and Sisal . Both offer good winds, yet they each have their own unique characteristics

The kitesurfing season in the Yucatan runs from November to June , but you may get lucky out of season and find a windy day.

I recommend coming from February to May , as these are the best months to enjoy low waves, constant wind and lots of sunshine throughout the day.

When it comes to kitesurfing for beginners in Yucatan , we offer a personalized approach to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe.

We have all the equipment needed to make lessons safe and fun in all conditions.

For advanced kitesurfers , it’s even more fun, with everything you need to enjoy a session in the style of your choice.

We recommend starting at the age of 10 .

The maximum age is really different for everyone, and some people want to start learning at 65. It’s perfectly possible, but we recommend doing it in a spot with few waves, such as a lake, to facilitate the process.

As far as physical fitness is concerned, you need a little stamina and mobility, but above all technique and the desire to learn .

Anyone can learn to kitesurf in Yucatan .

We offer tailored kitesurfing lessons for different levels: 3-hour introductory , 6-hour intermediate , and 9-hour advanced

During the courses, you’ll learn different exercises to become a real kitesurfer.

We offer group courses  (maximum 3 people) and private lessons . In both cases, you learn the same thing, the only difference being that in the group course, you share the same kite.

It depends on the wind, we’re always on the lookout and we tell you what the best time is, so it could be from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on the conditions and the student’s preferences, if he or she has another activity planned.

We usually organize full 9-hour courses to take students from beginner to expert level.

We recommend that these 9 hours be completed in 3 days x 3 hours , but in some cases they can be completed in 2 days x 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon .

Yes, we have instructors who can teach kitesurfing in English , French and Spanish.

We provide all the necessary equipment (kite, harness, bar, board, pump, vest, helmet) and we also use the BBtalkin radio system

Participants can also bring their own equipment and receive a discount.

The Elements Kite school, which opened its doors in 2019, features an excellent team of IKO (International Kitesurfing Organization) certified instructors , committed to providing the best experience with safety and a positive spirit.

The courses adhere to the standards set by the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO), incorporating numerous safety protocols and systems where necessary.

In the actual practice of kitesurfing, there are also various safety rules that are taught to the student during the lesson.

From time to time, events are organized in El Cuyo, one of them and the most common being the Festival de la Veda , which is not a competition as such, but a presentation and demonstration of what kitesurfing is all about.

In recent years, we’ve tried to organize more competitions at El Cuyo . Last year we had one, and this year we’ll be trying to organize others to raise the level, develop the sport and also tourism around it.

Over the last 15 years, kitesurfing has experienced a surge in popularity, and our community has responded positively .

Kitesurfing tourism has made a significant contribution to El Cuyo’s local economy , generating revenue in tourism services, accommodation and restaurants, while emphasizing sustainability and respect for the natural environment and local culture.

Some accommodations are very basic, others very pretty and comfortable. It’s worth noting that, in general, the best hotels fill up quickly , so I strongly advise you to book in advance!

• Casa Cuyo : this is a nice little hotel with a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, terrace, restaurant on site, from 74 $usd per night! 
• Casa Mate : small cozy cabins , to have your feet in the sand, a step away from the sea. Intimate atmosphere, excellent service, very good restaurant. Breakfast included, from 120 $usd per night
• La Casa Cielo is the best hotel in El Cuyo and the perfect place for a romantic trip . A well designed, beachfront hotel with lounge chairs, palm trees, a nice small pool , jacuzzi, two terraces and a good restaurant . One of the few places in El Cuyo that has an alcohol license and accepts cards . I stayed there 3 nights and loved it. Breakfast included, from 137 $usd per night

When you’re researching a vacation in Mexico, your non-kiter friends will bombard you with advice about Aztec ruins, tequila bars, $1 dollar tacos, deep-sea fishing, and cenotes. Suggestions for time-share rentals in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Cancun will follow. But your kiter friends know better. They’ll tell you about the beautiful turquoise and aquamarine waters in El Cuyo and the perfect foiling conditions in La Ventana. They’ll talk to you about the waves in Los Barilles and the flat water in Isla Blanca. 

Mexico is a great place for a kiteboarding vacation because it offers every kiter every kind of riding condition. Whether you’re kiting the Pacific, the Atlantic, or the Gulf, you’ll find great conditions for kiteboarding, kitesurfing, and foiling in Mexico. And don’t disregard your non-kiter friends’ advice - Mexico also has some fantastic no-wind activities for your rest days. And you can have a great time in Mexico without spending a ton of money!

Like its neighbor to the north, the United States, Mexico has a spot for every level of kiter and every discipline. Both the East and West coasts have great waves, flat water, and foiling spots, and the gulf-side offers slightly stronger winds and good waves and chop for jumping. Regardless of the conditions, you’re looking for, almost every spot in Mexico is ideal for learning. Not only is the water warm and comfortable all year round, the most popular spots in Mexico offer very safe conditions for learning, while still offering challenges for more advanced kiters. 

A NATURAL PLAYGROUND

Mexico has all of the natural beauty that any kiter could want. Aside from kiting, the country has fantastic waves for surfing and beautiful Cenotes where you can swim, paddleboard, snorkel, and dive. Baja California is a mountain-biking mecca, but if you’re more of a motorhead, you can go 4-wheeling in Cozumel. And if you’re tired of the land and the water, Mexico is also a great place for parasailing and paragliding or you can hit the zip-lines in Tulum.

A CULTURAL MECCA

Mexico is also a great place for a cultural fix. Chichen Itza, perhaps the most famous of the Aztec ruins, is located in the Yucatan, but you can also visit the Mayan ruins in the Riviera Maya, just 30 minutes from Tulum. If you’re in Oaxaca eating some of the best food in Mexico, you’re only 20 minutes from the pre-Columbian ruins of Monte Alban. And then there’s Mexico City. There’s not enough time here to talk about all the cultural attractions in that incredible city, but here is TripAdvisor’s take on the  city .

KITESURFING IN MEXICO 

Mexico does truly satisfy every kitesurfer’s desire. Whether you’re seeking out flat water paradise, foilboard heaven, or a surfer’s dream conditions, you can find it all in Mexico. The country is a winter escape for kiters in the Northern Hemisphere looking for warm, pretty water from October through May.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO KITESURF IN MEXICO?

Although you can technically kite in Mexico all year around, the kind of wind that you’re going to travel for is typically between October through May. After that, the wind drops and the heat kicks way up.

WHAT ARE THE BEST KITESURF SPOTS IN MEXICO?

Mexico has a wide variety of kiting conditions and spots all along its coastline. Kiteboarding on the West Coast is very different than the East Coast and the gulf. But each spot has something wonderful to offer visitors.

La Ventana/El Sargento, Baja California

Discovered by windsurfers in the 1980s, La Ventana is located on the Sea of Cortez -- a warm-ish water paradise for foilers and twintippers seeking beautiful water and friendly faces. The bay is shaped like a “catcher’s mitt” -- making it a great, safe place for learning -- and foilers love the fact that the water gets pretty deep fast. 

Thanks to the venturi effect between the Cacachilas mountains and the offshore Island of El Cerralvo, La Ventana gets an accelerated thermal wind almost every day. The average wind in La Ventana ranges from 10-25 knots. Occasionally, an “El Norte” wind comes through and kicks up the wind for about three or four days. Although you’re in Mexico, you’re still in the Pacific Ocean, so you’re going to need at least a shorty wetsuit. On the colder days, you might even want a 3/2 or 4/3, depending on your own inner temperature and preferences. 

Los Barilles, Baja California

An hour drive south of La Ventana, Los Barilles feels like a big city compared to La Ventana. The road used to end at Los Barilles, which is why the town is so built up with seasonal residents, both kiters and pickleball players. The water and air temperatures are the same as La Ventana, but if you’re looking for waves, Los Barilles is the spot for you. An average day can start with a four to six foot swells and build to eight or ten feet! If you’re looking for paradise, with a little more civilization, Los Barilles is the place for you.

El Cuyo, Yucatan

Just two and a half hours drive from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, El Cuyo still feels like an undiscovered kite spot. The town is small and has very few services. There are a handful of restaurants near the charming town center, where children play soccer until late in the evening. It’s surprising there aren’t more kiters in El Cuyo because the kiting is great. The water is a lot warmer than the west side of Mexico, so you can get by with just a rashguard and board shorts. On a northeast or east side shore wind, the spot is perfect for riding the medium-sized waves. If you’re a beginner wave rider, this is a great place for learning, but the more advanced wave riders are also going to have a lot of fun. The water is shallow for a while, so it’s a decent place for learning, but it gets deep fast enough for foilers to enjoy the spot as well. 

The average wind speed in the Yucatan is slightly higher than Baja, ranging from 12-25 knots. If you want to get away from it all, and ride some beautiful waves, head to El Cuyo.

Isla Blanca

With its shallow, flat water, Isla Blanca is an ideal spot for learning. The “isla” is a large strip of sand in a shallow seawater lagoon. Advanced twintippers will also love this spot, but it’s not going to be a favorite for foilers, even with a very short mast. 

Located just 25 miles north of Cancun, this small peninsula is a perfect blend of white sand beaches and beautiful jungle. Like most of Mexico, the windy season is from October/November to May/June. The winds at Isla Blanca average 10-30ish knots, and depending on the month, you may need a shorty. 

Although Tulum is not far from Cancun and is drivable to both El Cuyo and Isla Blanca, the town has a totally different vibe. It’s the kind of town that makes you think of yoga retreats and vegan restaurants. The wind is lighter than both El Cuyo and Isla Blanca, averaging 12-25 knots, but rarely as high as 25.  The water is mostly chop with some waves farther out by the reef. It’s mostly onshore wind, so it can be a bit challenging to get out in the lighter winds, but once you’re out, it’s worth it. The spot is gorgeous, and even prettier from the water. The air temperature ranges from 20°C to 28°C and the water is about as warm during the kiting season.

The country consists of 31 states and one federal district -- with many of Mexico’s rural areas still inhabited by indigenous people whose every day lives reflect those of their ancestors. With more than 100 million people living in Mexico, it is the third largest country in Latin America. A kiteboarding vacation to this amazing country wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the many ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins or a taste of the local cuisine.

Things to Do When There’s No Wind 

Mexico has more to offer than just kiteboarding! The country is a natural playground for non-wind activities including swimming in Cenotes, diving, deep sea fishing, mountain biking and ATV touring, and any kind of boardsport -- stand up paddle, surf and skate! The country also has a deep history and rich culture. If you want to take a break from the water, you can head to the Aztec or Mayan ruins that are sprinkled throughout the country or take to the sky for parasailing and paragliding. 

Getting to Mexico 

Flying to and around Mexico is easy and convenient. The major entry points include San Jose del Cabo (SJD) and La Paz (LAP) for Baja kiting and Cancun (CUN) for the east coast and Yucatan. Once you arrive in Mexico, car rentals are usually reasonably priced depending on the season.

One of the best aspects of kiteboarding is that it is highly portable. There are some world-class kiteboarding destinations in Mexico, with quite a few untapped gems to discover. Check out all our favorites below:

Bucerias Kiteboarding Lessons

Bucerias, riviera nayarit.

Located between Nuevo Vallarta and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, it has an extensive five-mile beach with golden sands and blue waters. It is a picturesque beach town with multiple public accesses to the beach.

Due to its climatic conditions, which include, among other characteristics, strong winds and moderate waves, Bucerías Beach is one of the best kiteboarding destinations in Mexico. It’s actually a great spot along the Riviera Nayarit to practice all kinds of extreme water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, and Hydrofoiling.

Bucerias Kiteboarding Season

Wind season here is between March and June. After that, the sea temperature rises so much that the breezes slow down. The north end of Banderas Bay is known to have pretty consistently good wind every afternoon. The wind ranges from  5 – 20 mph  but can reach 30mph. Usually starts around  noon  and on a good day continues until sunset. It’s possible to get  3 or 4 good days a week  during wind season.

The Kite Zone offers kiteboarding lessons in Puerto Vallarta & Bucerias for all levels with English and Spanish-speaking instructors that are certified by the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization).

• Ground Lessons: $90 USD / hr
• Water Assisted Lessons: $115 USD / hr

The  water class  includes a boat with your  personal instructor  following you the entire time and giving you tips along the way.  Kite gear  and  radio helmet  are included. We HIGHLY suggest taking a  neoprene suit  if you have one. The kiteboarding lessons on the water usually take place from La Cruz, Bucerias, or around La Lancha beach by boat.

La Ventana, Baja California Sur

La Ventana is an incredible beach town with perfect conditions to learn kiteboarding. La Ventana is situated only 30 minutes south of La Paz, Baja California Sur on the Sea of Cortez. It is only a two-hour drive from Los Cabos International Airport.

This Mexican beach village has amazing views of the bay, Cerralvo Island, and the scenic mountains that are fill of many different plants and cactus (the area is actually home to over 100 species of cactus). Kiteboarding in Mexico: The best spot in Yucatan

French travel blogger and kiter, Mathilde Meteye, visited us a year ago and we want to share her views on what she thinks is “a true playground for riders”. Playa del Carmen, that is.

Mexico, a unique winter destination, offers nothing but really beautiful scenery, and this is partly due to the constant winds during the windy season, a true payground for us riders, with spots worth seeing and visiting.

This is the right choice to travel with non-kiters, such as with your family or friends. For this option, check my 2-week itinerary in Yucatan – Best of 2019. When? January to April -> Best winds in February and March The Pros? Easily accessible – varied destination/ heavenly environment ideal for a family trip The cons? Too touristy – medium wind probabilities (1 day/ 2 average). Fairly light winds.

Holbox was clearly one of my favorites in Yucatan! It’s a small island that was long- kept off the radar by a handful of well-informed travelers, located 2 hours north from Cancun and nowadays, a destination far more notorious than Tulum, Isla Mujeres, or even Cozumel. Why? White sand beaches as far as the eye can see, its small colorful fishermen’s town, its Mexican Caribbean lifestyle, and of course, winds that blow from December to May and make this heavenly island irresistible!

For riding, the main beach (which is 1,5 km long) is perfect: turquoise waters and the right amount of space for kiting. It’s very shallow for about 100 meters, so it’s ideal for beginners. Beware of the winds that come offshore. However, since the waters are shallow for a good part of the spot, the environment is pretty accessible. And if you’re lucky enough, you can even have the chance of coming across turtles, whales, dolphins, and even pelicans. Characteristics: Winds: Off – Side Off and On – Side On/ Waters: Flat, Choppy / Level: All levels / Best season: From December to May Getting to Holbox:

You can get there by ferry from the small town of Chiquila, which is a 2-hour drive from Playa del Carmen. A school? Kiteboarding Holbox.

The school, founded by Jonny and Cathy, an English couple passionate about kiteboarding, has been in Holbox for almost 10 years. They know the island by heart and are willing to offer their good advice, positivity, and professionalism! Their team of instructors: Anna, Julian, and Jirka, has been the same for 5 years, which is something remarkable in the kiteboarding scene – and a true guarantee of their quality. A team with a spirit that is nice to see, Their courses are affordable for all levels. Otherwise, you can rent gear or request a supervision. The school also specializes in Foil.

80USD per hour for a private course and 60USD per hour for a course for two 25USD the hour of supervision, 75USD for 3-hour gear rental/ 95USD for the full day Note that when the wind season is off, the school changes its spot to Punta Mosquito, from where they organize a trip with their students under safety conditions. Besides, Cathy is always ready to pull out their boat whenever needed. They’re passionate about teaching, and it shows. They have also created a blog which I find absolutely interesting and useful about the learning process, the performance, the mastery of the techniques… this is a sport that makes us strive for continuous progress and evolution, which also adds up to the sense of addiction that kiteboarding can easily develop on you. And on hectic days? Well, the crystal-clear waters, its transparency, and Holbox’s beautiful setting are inviting enough to swap the board for a paddle board and have a fine session of SUP! Jonny and Cathy rent their paddle boards and organize Yoga Paddle courses for those who are interested.

2/ Punta Nizuc

Punta Nizuc is an excellent spot accessible from Cancun (15 min) and Playa del Carmen (45 min.) The Spot With its immense bay protected by the reef, its large spots of shallow and flat waters, this is definitely a spot that combines really good kiting conditions, for both beginners and advanced riders. Besides, the place is far from being crowded. Even during the high season -which happens to be in February- there were no more than twenty kites (during peak hours) in the water.

Characteristics:

Wind: On – Side On/ Direction: S-SE-E. But the best conditions remain with E-SE winds since the east wind comes directly into the shore. / Water: Flat / Level: All levels/ Best season: from November to June. Note that at Nizuc, there are external showers and restrooms for beachgoers. It’s open from 9h to 17h and there is a parking lot just beachfront.

Comment s’y rendre ?

Depuis La Paz , le moyen le plus simple est en taxi ou en voiture de location. La route dure environ 50 minutes. Vous n’avez aussi aucun mal à trouver des agences de voyages locales qui incluront le transport si vous travaillez avec elles. Une particularité qui rend ce village de pêcheur UNIQUE, la zone est classée au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. L’eau est calme et plate d’un bleu turquoise à couper le souffle. Les conditions climatiques rendent ce spot adapté à tous les niveaux. D’ailleurs le lagon derrière la plage a été transformé spécialement en parc à Kitesurf.

Quelle est la meilleure période pour se rendre sur ce sport de kite au Mexique ?

Selon Redbull.com la meilleure période serait entre Novembre et Mars.

Mais qu’est-ce qui rend cet endroit si spécial ?

Et bien déjà la localisation extraordinaire vous l’avez compris. Mais aussi c’est l’endroit des kitesurfers. En arrivant là-bas vous vous intégré facilement à une communauté déjà très présente. Venir seul n’est d’ailleurs pas un problème. Les voyageurs du monde entiers se rendent tous ensemble dans les bars et restaurants le soir pour échanger sur leur passion… Vous avez d’ailleurs le groupe facebook “Kiteboarding La Ventana” qui compte 10000 membres et qui est très actif. Dernière anecdote sur cet endroit c’est que beaucoup d’Américains prennent leur camping car et viennent passer l’hiver à La Ventana. 

Kitesurf sur la Riviera Maya

Le paradis du Kitesurfer se trouve peut être ici… Imaginez un petite péninsule minuscule longée d’eau claire et turquoise et d’un banc de sable blanc. Ce lieu existe, et il s’appelle Isla Blanca (l’île Blanche).  C’est un lagon d’eau calme et c’est et donc pour cette raison particulièrement adapté aux débutants.  Par ailleurs les plus expérimentés apprécieront cet environnement pour ajuster leurs tricks ou tout simplement en essayer de nouveaux ! La meilleure période pour se rendre à ce spot est entre novembre et juin. Si voulez profiter de la zone durant votre séjour vous avez quelques autres lieux à essayer et qui sont proches : 

• Cozumel : Une petite île qui est devenue une destination très populaire. La meilleure saison pour faire du kitesurf à Cozumel est entre février et mai.  
• Holbox : Le kitesurf sur cette île est idéal pour un débutant. Aucune voitures, simplement des petites motos, vélos ou voiturettes de golf. Les meilleurs vents sont entre Novembre et Août.
• Playa del Carmen : Des évènements internationaux prennent place à Playa pour la pratique du kitesurf. Néanmoins retenez qu’il y a seulement 2 plages pour faire du Kite : Playacar et Cocobeach
• Tulum : Ville à 1h30 de l’aéroport de Cancun et toujours autant reconnue pour ces plages paradisiaques. Vous pouvez également trouvez des vents importants pour faire du kitesurf à Tulum.

La Sargasse. Ces algues vertes qui se déposent sur les plages. Retenez qu’elles arrivent massivement entre mai et août. Cependant ces dernières années le changement climatique bouleverse ce calendrier donc renseigner vous un peu avant…

La péninsule du Yucatan comme terrain de jeu

Si vous êtes de passage dans la péninsule du Yucatan 3 spots principaux sont à tester : 

• Sisal (environ 1h de Merida) :

Sisal était autrefois un port maritime très important. Actuellement, c’est un paisible village de pêcheurs qui vous aidera à vous déconnecter de l’agitation urbaine. Ses plages sont larges et avec très peu ou pas de monde. Pour le kite, les meilleurs mois de la saison sont de février à juillet. Ses eaux sont peu profondes, avec de petites vagues et vous recevez des vents latéraux.

• El Cuyo (2h30 de l’aéroport de Cancun) :

Situé au nord-est du Yucatan. En voiture, c’est à deux heures et demie de Cancun. À cet endroit, les eaux du golfe du Mexique se mêlent à celles des Caraïbes. Ses plages sont calmes et idéales pour le kitesurf. Ici vous trouverez des eaux peu profondes qui sont sans danger pour les débutants. Le vent commence vers midi avec une vitesse de 10 à 25 nœuds.

• Progreso (un peu moins de 40 minutes du centre de Merida) :

C’est un port maritime important de la région. Evidemment c’est aussi un lieu touristique qui se trouve à la croisée de nombreux site à visiter au Yucatán.  Pour pratiquer le Kitesurf, vous trouverez des vents venant du Nord-est à une vitesse allant de 12 à 35 noeuds.

Bucarias, Nayarit : Un joyau de la côte pacifique

Venez faire du kite au Mexique dans le trésor du Pacifique. C’est la plus grande baie du Mexique. Rien que ça !Pour commencer c’est une destination pour les amateurs de sports nautiques.  Imaginez simplement, le matin, vous pratiquez le Paddle en mer avec de l’eau calme.  Ensuite l’après-midi une fois que le vent qui se lève, vous pouvez faire quelques heures de kitesurf. Par ailleurs la saison des vents ici se situe entre mars et juin. Après cela, la température de la mer monte tellement que les brises diminuent. L’extrémité nord de la baie est connue pour avoir un vent assez bon tous les après-midi.

Golf du Mexique et ses stations balnéaires

• Tampico, Tamaulipas (saison : octobre à avril)

Le port de Tampico est l’un des plus importants de tout le pays.  Les eaux sont calmes et peu profondes.  Pour le kitesurf, vous aurez des vents de 10 à 20 nœuds venant du nord et du sud-est. 

• Veracruz (saison : janvier à avril, juin, octobre à décembre)

Dans le port de Veracruz, vous trouvez plusieurs spots de kitesurf : Pour conclure sur cette partie du Mexique, vous trouvez des vents onshore, sideshore et side-onshore venant du nord et du sud-est. D’octobre à mars  les vents peuvent atteindre 40 nœuds !

Infos à connaître avant votre session de kite au Mexique

Pour terminer quelques informations précieuses à connaître avant votre séjour de kite au Mexique ! Tout d’abord si vous débutez dans le kite, ou même si vous êtes expérimenté vous allez peut-être vouloir prendre des cours.  Sur Internet, vous trouverez beaucoup d’options.  C’est un peu compliqué de s’y retrouver. On se perd dans les multitudes d’options qui s’offrent à nous. Il y a même de nombreux séjours tout inclus. Une solution à cela, est la suivante :  Une fois votre choix fait sur la destination pour faire du kite au Mexique le site que je peux vous recommander est Superprof   Vous entrez votre destination et la plateforme vous propose les profs disponibles dans la région.  L’avantage c’est qu’il y a des avis clients et vous pouvez communiquer correctement.  L’autre point fort de ces plateformes c’est la sécurité. Eviter les arnaques au niveau du règlement par exemple… Ensuite quelques ultimes recommandations avant de venir : 

• N’oubliez pas la Propina . Ici, le pourboire  c’est vraiment important. C’est d’ailleurs une des raisons pour laquelle la qualité du service est incroyable au Mexique.
• Maîtriser les bases de l’Espagnol : Si vous avez lu mes autres articles vous allez croire que je me répète. Mais c’est tellement ignoré par la plupart des touristes… J’ai d’ailleurs une mise en situation parfaite à vous proposer… Comment avoir les bonnes infos auprès des locaux (notamment les pratiquants de kite) ? Beaucoup d’ente-eux ne parleront pas Anglais… Alors reprenez quelques bases en Espagnol et ne soyez pas timides ! Cela pourrait même vous sauvez la vie en vous évitant les zones dangereuses.
• Dans tous les lieux énoncés il y a souvent des écoles de kite qui pourront vous louer du matériel de kitesurf . Il y a donc à priori pas de problème pour se fournir si besoin.

Faire du Kitesurf au Mexique: les meilleurs spots du Yucatan

Le Mexique, destination de rêve lorsqu’on veut échapper à l’hiver en France, est loin de n’avoir que des très beaux paysages à offrir ; c’est aussi, grâce à ses vents constants en saison, un terrain de jeu non négligeable pour nous riders, avec quelques spots de Kitesurf dans le Yucatan qui valent le détour. Entre deux visites..!

Les Moins ?

Destination très touristique – Probabilités de vent moyennes (1 jr/2 environs) – Vent assez léger

Holbox a clairement été un de mes coups de coeur du Yucatan ! C’est une petite île tenue longtemps hors des radars par une poignée de voyageurs bien avisés,   située à 2h au nord de Cancun, et qui aujourd’hui se révèle bien plus en vogue que Tulum, Isla Mujeres ou encore Cozumel. 

Ses plages de sable blanc à perte de vue, son petit village de pêcheurs coloré, son art de vivre mexico-caribéen, et bien sûr un vent qui souffle de décembre à mai… et qui rendent cette île paradisiaque complètement irrésistible !

Pour naviguer,  la plage principale (1,5 km de long) est parfaite  : l’eau est turquoise et il y a tout l’espace nécessaire pour kiter. On a pied sur 100m, c’est donc idéal pour les débutants . Attention au  vent qui souffle parfois offshore.  Mais comme on a pied sur une bonne partie du spot, l’endroit reste très accessible.

Et si vous êtes chanceux, vous pourrez y croiser  des tortues, baleines, dauphins ou encore pélicans.

Ses Caractéristiques:

Vent: Off – Side Off et On – Side On  / Plan d’eau: Flat, Clapot / Niveau: Tous niveaux / Meilleure saison: de décembre à mai

Se rendre à Holbox:

L’accès se fait en Ferry  depuis la petite ville de Chiquila, à 2h de route de Playa del Carmen.

→ Une école ? KITEBOARDING HOLBOX

L’école fondée par Jonny et Cathy, un couple d’anglais, passionné de Kite, et installé à Holbox depuis près de 10 ans. Ils connaissent l’île comme leur poche, et sont avides de bons conseils, de positivité, et de professionnalisme ! Leur équipe d’instructeurs: Anna, Julian, Jirka, est la même depuis 5 ans, impressionnant dans le milieu du Kite – et un véritable gage de qualité. Un esprit d’équipe comme il fait plaisir à voir.

Les cours sont accessibles pour tous les niveaux. On peut sinon louer du matériel ou demander une supervision. L’école est également spécialisée en Foil.

Comptez 80$ de l’heure en cours particulier et 60$ pour un cours à 2, 25$ de l’heure en supervision, 75$ pour 3 heures de location Full Equipment / 95$ pour la journée.

A noter que lorsque le vent est OFF, l’école change de spot, et organise un trip avec ses élèves jusqu’à Punta Mosquito pour naviguer dans des conditions sécurisées. De plus, Cathy est toujours prête à dégainer leur bateau en cas de besoin! 

L’enseignement est une passion pour eux, et ça se sent. Ils ont ainsi créé un blog que je trouve extrêmement intéressant et utile, dans l’apprentissage, la performance, la maîtrise des techniques… ce sport nous amenant à être en constance progression, évolution. Ce qui participe d’ailleurs au sentiment d’addiction que l’on peut facilement développer.

Et les journées pétoles ? Et bien, la limpidité de l’eau, sa transparence, et le cadre magnifique d’Holbox nous invitent facilement à troquer la Board contre une Paddle Board, et se faire une jolie session de SUP ! Jonny et Cathy louent des Paddle Board et organisent pour les intéressés, des cours de Yoga Paddle.

2/ PUNTA NIZUC

Punta Nizuc est un excellent spot accessible depuis CANCUN (15min) et PLAYA DEL CARMEN (45min).

Avec son immense baie protégée par le récif, ses larges zones d’eau peu profonde et flat, c’est clairement un spot qui réunit de très bonnes conditions de navigation, et s’adresse aussi bien aux débutants qu’aux plus expérimentés. De plus, le spot est loin d’être très fréquenté; Même en haute saison, pour y avoir été en février, on ne comptait pas plus d’une vingtaine de Kite (au pic de la journée) sur l’eau.

Vent: On – Side On / Direction: S-SE-E. M ais les meilleures conditions restent avec un vent E-SE puisque le vent de l’est vient directement sur la rive /  Plan d’eau: Flat / Niveau: Tous Niveaux /  Meilleure saison: de Novembre à Juin.

A noter que sur Nizuc, il y a des toilettes et des douches externes pour les visiteurs venant à la plage.  Celle-ci  est ouverte de 9h à 17h et il y a un parking juste en face.

3/ ISLA BLANCA

Davantage connu, le spot de kite d’Isla Blanca se trouve sur une péninsule, entourée d’un magnifique lagon, à 25 minutes en voiture, au nord de Cancun. Un petit écrin de nature..!

Il y a en réalité plusieurs spots sur l’île, mais le plus connu – et accessible aux débutants, grâce à son grand lagon sécurisé nommé Chacmuchuc, reste le   spot Riviera Maya.  Le cadre est splendide: eau turquoise à perte de vue, et des kilomètres de plages de sable blanc désertes… C’est aussi bien sûr un excellent spot pour les confirmés ou pro riders, pour passer quelques beaux nouveaux tricks !

Le spot est d’ailleurs  plus venté qu’ailleurs  au Mexique, on est facilement sur du 30 nœuds , quand ça souffle.

C’est à Gianpaolo, italien d’origine, et son équipe d’instructeurs – entre autres, Armando et Gabriel avec qui j’ai pu naviguer, que l’on s’en remet si l’on est basé à Playa del Carmen ou Cancun. Ils desservent les deux villes.

Equipe vraiment professionnelle et très sympa. Elle est en place depuis des années.

Un des spots les plus reculés et tenus secrets de la Péninsule, mais qui commence tout de même à faire parler du lui… et parler en bien !

C’est local là-bas! Le véritable esprit mexicain dans ce village de pêcheurs, qui offre de très bonnes conditions de navigation, dans un cadre idyllique. Je n’ai pas eu la chance d’y aller, mais je n’y manquerai pas la prochaine fois.

D’autant que de belles initiatives sont en train de voir le jour: Gianpaolo, de l’école Kitesurf Mexico, est effectivement en train d’y bâtir un Kite Center. Un établissement spécial pour riders, La Casa Cuyo , aux couleurs locales pour ne pas dénaturer cet environnement si préservé. Et avec tout ce qu’il faut se faire de jolies vacances Kite, au paradis..! Hébergement / Location de Matériels / Storage de Matériels / Cours tous niveaux.

Situé dans la pointe nord du golfe du Mexique, El Cuyo est effectivement, encore un endroit méconnu, pour la plupart des kiteboarders.  Très peu savent que les statistiques de vent y sont plus élevées.     C’est aussi un excellent spot pour apprendre du fait de ses  eaux peu profondes, mettant en confiance les débutants. Très beaux Downwinds, en outre, depuis El Cuyo. 

A noter que le vent du nord étant parfois très fort, on peut avoir également quelques belles vagues – sympas pour le strapless, le Freestyle, et autres tricks.

Nous avons lu avec plaisir votre post sur le kite dans le Yucatán, et en particulier au Cuyo où nous avons ouvert en décembre agréable petit hôtel « de kiters pour kiters » 🙂 « LunArena Boutique Hôtel » est situé dans un endroit idyllique, entre mer, lagune et jungle, à 50m d’une plage de sable blanc qui s’étend sur 16km, spot de kite idéal pour tous niveaux. Après une bonne session sur l’eau (conditions de vent ok à excellentes à peu prêt tous les après-midis au Cuyo vous pouvez vous rafraîchir dans la petite piscine de l’hôtel et déguster un bon repas dans notre Restaurant « Luma Cocina del mar » sous les palmiers. Nous pouvons vous envoyer avec plaisir plus d’infos et des photos. 2 La Ventana, Baja California Sur

La Ventana, une petite ville de pêcheurs où, pendant les mois d’hiver, tout tourne autour du kitesurf. Découverte par les windsurfers il y a de nombreuses années, elle est devenue une destination attrayante pour le kitesurf qui attire chaque année de plus en plus de kitesurfeurs, en raison de ses vents thermiques quotidiens réguliers. Le bleu intense de la mer de Cortez, la vue imprenable sur l’île de Cerralvo en face et la nature environnante de cactus et de désert rendent cet endroit magique. De nombreux kitesurfeurs américains descendent toute la Basse Californie avec leur camping-car pour passer l’hiver à La Ventana, d’autres s’envolent vers La Paz ou Los Cabos et prennent un taxi. 3 Sisal, Yucatan

À 45 minutes de Mérida se trouve une autre des meilleures plages de kitesurf du Mexique, mais un joyau caché et un spot de kitesurf secret des mieux gardés. La charmante ville de pêcheurs de Sisal, sur la côte nord-ouest de la péninsule du Yucatan, est l’endroit parfait pour les amoureux de la nature et de la tranquillité. Le centre colonial coloré, les kilomètres de plages de sable blanc désertes, un sanctuaire de flamants roses protégé, un grand lagon avec des mangroves et des puits d’eau douce, des habitants sympathiques, les meilleurs et les plus frais fruits de mer du Yucatan et bien plus encore font que les visiteurs tombent amoureux de cet endroit spécial, qui était autrefois le principal port d’exportation de produits henequen (connus sous le nom de « Sisal »).

La plage du Yucatan convainc par ses eaux peu profondes et ses conditions de vent parfaites, le vent souffle presque toute l’année. C’est toujours un peu comme un Kitespot secret, c’est l’endroit où il faut aller en tant que Kiter.

5 Bucerias, Riviera Nayarit

Venez cerf-volanter le trésor du Pacifique du Mexique. La Bahia de Banderas est la plus grande baie du Mexique. Elle est parfaite pour les amateurs d’action et de sports nautiques, car vous pouvez pratiquer le Stand Up Paddle dans l’océan plat le matin et le cerf-volant l’après-midi, une fois que le vent thermique entre en jeu. Les kilomètres de plage invitent à de superbes promenades et au jogging. Vous pouvez également partir à l’aventure en surf, il y a beaucoup des meilleures plages de surf autour de Bucerias.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
