Work and Travel in Austria

Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in austria for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in austria for travellers.

Austria is known for its beautiful cities, stunning landscapes, and Mozart. But if you want to do more than your conventional tourist, think about work and travel in Austria . Not only will you have the chance to dig deeper under the surface of the country, work in Austria will allow you to extend your trip for longer and gain some worthwhile experience. It’s not always easy to know where to turn for volunteer opportunities in Austria. However, our travel guide to Austria provides you with everything you need to plan your next trip. 1. Learn about Self-Sufficiency in Austria Outside of the cities, such as in Konigsdorf, the self-sufficiency movement has gained steam. From large country mansions to little farmsteads, Austrians are learning how to fend for themselves. Search for self-sufficiency projects in Austria. Anyone with DIY skills will be in high demand, as well as anyone who knows about gardening. But many projects will also offer you on the job training. 2. Teach English in Austria Many people visit Vienna, Salzburg, and Graz and automatically believe that everyone speaks fluent English. It’s true that the major cities have a high number of English speakers. However, despite Austria’s strong sense of social duty, there’s a real shortage of qualified English teachers in the smaller towns and villages. Do you have what it takes to teach English in Austria? Work in Austria doesn’t require you to know anything but basic German and you’ll be fully supported as you settle in. 3. Go to the Alps as a Ski Instructor Austria’s ski resorts are legendary. Imagine how valuable a season working in one of those ski resorts could be for you. Not only will you gain the perks of free access to some of the best ski slopes in Europe, but you’ll also be able to teach people about the sport. This is invaluable experience that will serve you well on any future job application. It’s one of the best options for work and travel in Austria. Just bear in mind that competition is fierce and you’ll be expected to apply months in advance of the main ski season.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR AUSTRIA

Travel in Austria requires you to comply with the immigration requirements of the Schengen Zone . That means UK citizens, prior to Brexit, and citizens of other European Union (EU) countries are able to enter and work in Austria without any form of visa. You are able to stay for as long as you like. From outside the Schengen Zone, things start to differ. For example, South Koreans, the Japanese, Australians, Kiwis, and North Americans are required to get a Schengen visa-on-arrival and can only stay for a maximum of 90 days in every 180 days . With Austria being in the heart of EU, visa runs are not a viable option. Furthermore, overstaying your visa means you can be banned from the whole of the EU for many years. For South Africans, Russians, and Chinese citizens there’s no visa-free allowance. They have to apply for a formal Schengen visa prior to their arrival. For more info click here . These visas don’t apply to paid work. If you manage to land a paid job during your stay you will be expected to apply for a work visa. Depending on where you’re from, these can be notoriously difficult to secure.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN AUSTRIA

Spring work.

Spring marks the end of the ski season and the melting of the heavy snows that cover Austria. Many outdoor projects are active at this time of year. For example, you can join in with revitalisation projects that take place within the forests and woods of Austria. Many of these are also active around the Alps, towards the border with Slovenia. This is also a good time of year to be volunteering on a farm. Many farmers in Austria require a lot of help during the planting season.

SUMMER JOBS

Summer in Austria brings glorious sunshine and a whole host of tourists. This is an excellent time to visit the cities of Austria. You can teach English to children as part of a summer camp. It’s also possible to find work in general summer camps, where you will be keeping the kids entertained. Throughout the cities, hostels are crying out for volunteers to help them with the increased workload. The most popular location for this is Vienna, but you can also find a number of roles in Innsbruck, Graz, and Salzburg.

For the autumn season, you should refer back to the ‘Spring’ section for more information. Most of the specialist skills required are the same as the spring. Farm work is a popular option for work in Austria because it’s the harvest season. Farmers also need help preparing their farms and their animals for the winter. If you want to travel in Austria long-term, it’s also an ideal time to try to find teaching jobs with longer contracts in the rural areas.

Austria turns into a winter wonderland at the end of the year. It brings hundreds of thousands of people every year to the Alps. Alpine ski resorts are difficult to secure jobs in, but if you can get one you’ll have a great piece of experience to add to your CV. You can find roles in cleaning, customer service, and working directly on the slopes yourself. The best position for you depends on your previous experience. Ski resorts tend to fill positions months in advance of the ski season itself. Try to apply during the summer and autumn to increase your chances of finding a volunteer opportunity in an Austrian ski resort.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN AUSTRIA

With recent political goings on, it’s easy to think that Austria is less welcoming than it once was. If you travel in Austria today you’ll notice that the media has exaggerated how the country reacts to foreigners. You won’t have any issues fitting into Austrian society during your time here. Austrians are used to foreign visitors and you don’t need to worry about any hostility. Just make sure you’re not breaking the rules of your visa when you take up volunteering opportunities in Austria. Are you ready to take on work in Austria?

Mountain Landscape in Austria

Mountain Landscape in Austria

Austria is a landlocked country located in Central Europe. It shares borders with the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The official language is German.

Because the official language is German, most of the best resources for finding a job are in German. If you know German that is great. But, if not, find someone you know that can speak German to help you out.

A good starting point for your search is this country is to read this post at the Public Employment Service in Austria . Not only do they have advice, but they often have openings for tourist related jobs and short term/seasonal jobs, particularly in Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.

Also, check out the local newspapers in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. The classifieds in these newspapers often have job openings.

There is only so much you can do via the internet, so if you are dead set on finding a job in this country, book yourself a flight to Vienna and use the resources below to start looking for a job. There are quite a few foreigners who work in this country, so it is not impossible. Just like everything in life, you have to go out there and try, planting continuous seeds, before your plans of working and living in this country come to fruition. Don’t give up!

General Job Search Engines and Classifieds

With the sites below, you can expect to get a 0.5 to 1.0% response rate (people who will respond back to you to whom you sent your application/CV.) Nevertheless, I encourage you to give these sites a try as you never know what you will come up with or what connections you can make from a simple e-mail or application.

Teaching English

Teaching English is an option to consider (if you are a native English speaker that is). All of the sites below are pretty similar and have a massive amount of teaching English job options. Browse through each of the sites for any English job opportunities in Austria. Also, be sure to check out this cool table from the International TEFL academy that shows  how much money teachers can expect to make  in various countries around the world.

  • ESL Employment : Not the most beautiful interface, but who needs a pretty website when you have so many English teaching job options to choose from.
  • Total ESL : Also an overly busy interface but a wealth of job postings for teaching jobs abroad.
  • ESL Cafe : Dave does a great job in compiling some of the best job openings from around the world.
  • Tesall : Big teaching jobs aggregator.

Other Websites and Blogs

  • Transitions Abroad :  Transitions Abroad has a really comprehensive list for anyone considering becoming an expatriate in Austria.
  • Tricycle Love :  Thinking about moving to Salzburg? The information on this post is old but still relevant.
  • Prospects :  A no-frills discussion of the job market in Austria.

Overseas and Expat Job Portals

  • Overseas Jobs :  I find that there is often significant overlap between the postings on this site and that of other sites. Nevertheless this site has been around for a while.
  • Go Abroad : I’ve always been a fan of GoAbroad. In fact, on the visa information portion of my website, you will find where I have linked to their global embassies directory. They have a good job portal too.
  • Linkedin : Last but not least, this huge professional social network is a resource for building contacts in the field and location of your interest.

Jobs in Austria for Non-EU Citizens

For citizens outside of Europe, you will need to check your country specific requirement as you will usually need to apply for a visa. If you’re a UK citizen, due to Brexit and the United Kingdom’s leaving the EU, the process for working in Austria is now more difficult and complicated. You will need to check to see if you are eligible and also apply for a residence permit. You can check latest visa/entry requirements online, or contact your local Austrian embassy or consulate with specific questions.

The best times to visit Austria

VIENNA, AUSTRIA - NOVEMBER 30, 2016: Annual christmas market at the City Hall (Rathaus) in downtown of austrian capital city.

Mountainous landscapes, legendary road trips and vibrant yet prestigious cities await in Austria , a landlocked country in the heart of Europe . For a relatively small nation, Austria offers so much, whether you're looking for great outdoor activities, immersive cultural experiences – or both.

Weather patterns are shifting, but April and November tend to be the wettest months, while temperatures are lowest in January and climb highest in July. May and September usually offer the most pleasant conditions.

Have skiing, hiking or a city trip in mind? Time your trip to Austria perfectly with our guide.

May to June and September to October are best for hiking

Looking to tackle a hiking adventure in the Austrian Alps? Plan your outdoorsy trip in May, June, September or October. Temperatures are modest, with a maximum of around 30°C (86°F) in the valley and cooler when you reach altitude. Another bonus is that the sun is up early and days on the trail can be longer. Some high-altitude regions may still/already be covered in snow, so check live cams where available. Find up-to-date weather information and warnings for several mountain regions in Austria at ZAMG (currently only available in German, but you can use the auto-translate tool in your browser).

During these months, you can expect to get good deals on hotels and alpine huts. But keep public holidays in mind, especially in May and on October 26 (Austria’s national holiday), when accommodations, highways and trains tend to fill up quickly.

July and August are best for swimming

Summers in Austria can be sweltering, and many flock to the lakes on the weekends – or even after work. Cooling off in the lakes or even in rivers like the Danube is a true delight in July and August. Water temperatures vary but you can expect pleasant dips in the likes of Wolfgangsee, Wörthersee and Attersee during the summer months.

It usually cools down at night, but there have been some pretty hot nights in recent years. Be aware that houses and apartments are not often equipped with AC, but most hotels usually are. Bear this in mind when choosing accommodation.

Avoid cities like Vienna and Salzburg in July and August

Plan any trips to major cities like Vienna , Salzburg and Innsbruck in the shoulder season. The sun and crowds become unbearable in these cities in summer, and tickets to major sites sell out quickly. You’ll experience a more authentic version of Austria and have a more enjoyable experience if you opt for April, May, September or October.

If you do happen to find yourself in the cities in summer, start your days early (before 8am) to wander empty streets without the crowds.

September and October are best for wine trips

When temperatures start to cool and the leaves shake off their bright green hue in favor of autumnal glory, it’s the best time to visit the wine regions of Austria. Head to Wachau in Lower Austria and the South of Styria to enjoy a savory Brettljause (platter of cold cuts of local meats and cheeses, served with farmhouse bread), wine and Sturm (seasonal fermenting grape juice) at a Heuriger or Buschenschank (small, locally-run restaurants or wine taverns).

Skiers on top at winter ski resort Hintertux, Tirol, Austria.

Mid-December to mid-March is best for skiing and snow

Winter sports enthusiasts – particularly those into skiing and snowboarding – should plan their trip to the Alps for mid-December to mid-March. Accommodation prices skyrocket during the two-week Christmas holiday and school holidays in February. Go in mid-January or March instead and enjoy the ski resorts with fewer crowds in Salzburg, Tyrol , Carinthia, Vorarlberg or Styria.

For a taste of winter outside of these months, check out the region's glaciers – including the one in Hintertux, which is open year-round.

Mid-November till early January for Christmas markets

Traditionally, most Christmas markets in Austria open on the first weekend of Advent, which is usually early December. This has changed slightly in recent years. The Christkindlmarkt at Vienna’s City Hall opens in mid-November and closes after the Christmas holidays. Sternadvent in Salzburg is one of those that remain open the longest, until early January. Plan ahead and book your accommodation in advance to secure a good deal. Ideally, opt for Christmas markets that you can reach by public transportation, so you can enjoy a hot mug of mulled wine or two.

Experience Austria’s cultural side year-round

Austria is exciting every day of the year. Whether it's Easter processions in Tyrol or Styria, spring festivals like  Narzissenfest  or  Steiermark-Frühling , the world-renowned Salzburger Festspiele in summer, cattle processions in the Alps in autumn or unique and sometimes odd Christmas traditions such as Krampus or Perchten in December, you’ll be able to create an outstanding itinerary full of memorable moments – no matter when you decide to visit.

Our Chicago: Celebrating Juneteenth across the city

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Wednesday is Juneteenth.

It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people of African descent in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free. That was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Perri Irmer is the president and CEO of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. She says for many years, Juneteenth was not celebrated in more northern states.

"This is, I think, also an example of pieces of history that are kept hidden, that aren't widely known. And why it's so important for institutions like Black museums and history curriculum across the board to really recognize these important dates and these important facts in American history. And let's not forget that African-American history is American history," Irmer said.

In June 2021, Juneteenth became a national holiday. This year, the DuSable Black History Museum has a day of events planned to celebrate. Irmer is hoping "everyone" attends.

"We are the nation's oldest, independent Black history museum," Irmer said.

The DuSable was founded in 1961.

"We are really kind of the centerpiece of Chicago's Juneteenth celebration. This year, we expect probably upwards of 6,000 people during the day, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. We're offering entertainment, we're offering music and dance. And we have so many activations and a vendor marketplace that mimics an African marketplace," Irmer said.

Our Chicago: Part 2

At Chicago's Music Box Theater, "Life Within The Lens: Juneteenth Edition" will feature five short films. All of them, the works of Black filmmakers here in Chicago.

Among them is Marquis Simmons. His film is called "Broke Down Drone."

"It's about two cousins who are just going through the everyday struggle trying to make their dreams happen," Simmons said.

He says it takes you on a journey through Chicago.

"This film was a love letter to North Lawndale and pretty much, predominately, the West Side of Chicago. So I want people walking away feeling uplifted and just feeling hopeful. No matter how hard your circumstances are that the dream is still very possible," Simmons said.

Tyler Michael Balentine is the programmer at the Music Box Theatre.

"Film is perspective. And when you get a perspective into all of our stories and how nuanced they are, from sadness to joy. Subjects of life and death, faith, community, liberation, especially with it being Juneteenth, you definitely get to have more insight and you just have more of a view of what it means to be Black in America," Balentine said.
